View Full Version : PS3 problems and setup issues thread! Lord_Zath 05-09-09, 07:04 PM Another troubleshooting step - connect the ps3 temporarily using the video RCA cable, and keep the optical connected. Does it work then? confidenceman 05-09-09, 07:47 PM There's never a troubleshooting solution that's too stupid to rule out. Even the most experienced of us makes dumb mistakes. The only way to successfully troubleshoot is to start from the most basic things and work your way up. The PS3 is full of its own quirks and setup issues, so we're definitely not trying to treat you like an electronics newbie. :D Are you getting sound through your TV's speakers? If so, then the PS3 is trying to send audio over HDMI. I've looked for a way to disable HDMI audio but have found none. You mean like this? -> Under sound settings in the XMB menu, select "audio output settings." Then it asks to "select the connector on the TV or AV amplifier (receiver)." Choose "Digital Out (Optical)" rather than "HDMI." That should disable all HDMI audio output from your PS3. If that doesn't work, then try doing as the above poster suggested (use an RCA cable for video and run audio setup that way). Then do the double-beep reset as detailed above. OOZ662 05-10-09, 11:00 PM I have an issue with my PS3 giving something I don't know the name for. :D The picture is "fine" in that it's usable, but contains an odd and painful color shift. Yellowish-white(and a little green) "shards" will stick out the right side of things, especially if they're bright and moving. Sometimes you can see blue shards of the same type sticking in from the right side of objects. I'm not sure what to do about it. I've messed around with the RGB range and super-white settings to no avail. Using 480(p?) instead of 1080 reduces the effect, but doesn't eliminate it. As a side note, the most I've noticed it was in Metal Gear Solid 4 where there's a shot of Snake's face over a dreary sky background. Nasty green-yellowness scomes sliding out of his face and begins to dance like an equalizer until the scene shifts. Television is a CRT Insignia NS27-HTV manufactured August 2006. Martez 05-10-09, 11:15 PM Can you get any pictures? OOZ662 05-11-09, 09:14 PM Picture attached, though it isn't too clear since I only have a cellphone camera at the moment. Notice the green shift. Myth 05-11-09, 09:24 PM i just replaced my 80gig hdd with a wd 320gig. i have a couple of concerns i know that nobody actually gets what it says on the hdd. i was thinking i would have about 298 after the initial format and restore. turns out i had 268 after the format and 247 after the restore...268 after the format seems wrong Lord_Zath 05-11-09, 10:49 PM the XMB takes up a percentage of the hdd - can't remember what. So the larger the hdd, the more space it takes up. 268 sounds about right - that's about 50 gigs for the xmb (roughly 15%) todrigo 05-14-09, 11:52 AM I am having Network Error issues. My original launch PS3 died a month or so back and I got a refurb back from sony. Since getting the refurb which is a 60GB model but not from the launch run I have been getting network sign-in errors that never occured with my original unit. Upon bootup my ps3 attempts to sign in but fails I then make manual attemps and usually it is after one or two tries that it connects. Also, in game I am frequently getting disconnected from the psn which was extremely rare for my original machine. My internet service, cable modem, and router have not changed since the original ps3. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what could be the cause? If it is something to do with the PS3 itself I am working with a shrinking warranty window on the refurb. bjvjs 05-15-09, 01:18 PM I have a PS3 with a Denon 789 and hooked it up last night. Every time I try to play a CD on the PS3, a agreement appears on the projector screen and I must push "cancel' to play the cd every time. Is there a solution? I have another PS3 in another room and have not had this issue. I didn't see were I could select "agree" or something similar so I don't have to turn the monitor on each time a review this statement. Thanks SaltwaterCat 05-15-09, 01:25 PM My 1 yr old ps3 is acting weird…need some suggestions. My system, 40 gig PS3 via Monoprice HDMI cable to avr Yamaha 663 AVR 52 inch Toshiba LCD Comcast HD Box – optical to AVR My problem is that the PS3 has stopped playing the musical track of my games (MLB 09, NBA 2K9 etc…) and demos and downloaded games. I can hear my sub but not the higher end tones. Also, on the demos…it won’t play the music that starts while you have the curser on it. Plus, my “key tone” that clicking sound while navigating the menu isn’t audible even though it is clicked on in the settings. It is not sending the right info to the avr. The PS3 is setup to use lpcm and I have no problem w/ BD. I put in BD Transformers, sent lpcm to the Yamaha and it matrixed the 5.1 to 7.1 no problem…sounds great…all features and sound. Also, I switched over to my cable, put on a HD concert that came in 5.1 and the avr matrixed it to 7.1 no problem. So, I’m thinking it is the PS3 because when I switch from PLX PCM to regular 7 CH surround stereo on the avr, I CAN hear the games and menu music in 7 CH Stereo on the PS3 but NOT my “key tone”. Under audio, I’ve done Manual and auto via hdmi, it always picks all available since the Yamaha takes them all. I also did a “default setting” redo and put everything back to where it was but it still dragging the upper level part of the music on games plus the damm “key tone”. Also, I set it to bitstream and still only sub was audible What am I missing? JimWinVA 05-17-09, 06:58 AM So- I've tried all the suggestions I've recieved, everything I could think of and even Sony support (no help- they said its the AVR's problem) and I still can't get any sound from optical bitstream. I can get LPCM, but thats only 2 channel so I get DPL instead of DD. I guess I'll try to excahnge the unit- hope Sony Style is willing to work w/ me (esp hope I can keep this unit until a replacement arrives). Thanks to evryone who offerred help. Anyone have the Logitech wireless controller? It sends IR to a dongle which converts to Bluetooth. I just got one and I'm hoping the dongle will also convert IR from my harmony 880. That seems too good to be true though. mborland 05-19-09, 08:50 AM JimWin It really sounds like AVR problem. Have you tried a diff prtical input on the AVR? Tried using HDMI to the TV with sound turned on? From my meager understanding, sending bitstream means the PS3 does no processing, but your AVR does it. Selecting PCM works so the PS3 is decoding the signal properly. Bitstream does not, so your AVR is not. Double, triple, and even quadruple check the settings and connections on your AVR. And I ordered the Logitech dohicky, should be here in a week or so. Not really a dongle, more like a box. Does NOT use up a USB port. YEAH! RazViper 05-25-09, 11:33 PM I cannot figure out why whenever I start a game or blu-ray movie that my sounds switches from 5.1 surround to 5-channel stereo. Here's the details: I have all of my connections running through the receiver, so I have my PS3 hooked up to my Denon AVR-689 as follows: Video: HDMI cable Audio: Optical cable (the Denon AVR-689 does not allow audio over HDMI) I have checked the following settings on my PS3: BD Audio Output Format (Optical Input): Bitstream Audio Output Settings: Digital Out (Optical), with Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 both selected I'm not sure if I'm missing something or what could be the problem. When I'm browsing the PS3 menu, the receiver correctly states that the audio is being output in Dolby PLII, but when I start the movie or game, the receiver changes to say that the output is being displayed in 5-channel stereo (and these are blu-ray movies or new games that I know are configured for 5.1 surround sound). Both the video and audio are fine except for this one problem. You can definitely tell the difference between the stereo and surround sound, so I know the receiver is actually outputting in the method that it states on the front. Thanks in advance for any help you are able to provide. toby10 05-26-09, 05:50 AM .......... Both the video and audio are fine except for this one problem. You can definitely tell the difference between the stereo and surround sound, so I know the receiver is actually outputting in the method that it states on the front........ You might want to check your AVR settings and once the movie is playing have the AVR use Surround Decode and/or Auto. I'd check for a loose feed cable as well. Does this only happen on your PS3? You get proper PLII or DD 5.1 when ch surfing cable or OTA? confidenceman 05-26-09, 10:26 AM I'm not sure if I'm missing something or what could be the problem. When I'm browsing the PS3 menu, the receiver correctly states that the audio is being output in Dolby PLIISounds like you have your listening modes/DSPs configured incorrectly on your receiver. If you're bitstreaming audio from your PS3, your receiver should not display "Dolby PLII" for a surround source. It should say "Dolby Digital" or "DTS." It should display "Dolby PLII" only if your receiver is upmixing a 2-channel signal to 5.1 instead of just decoding DD or DTS as it should. You need to configure your DSPs on your receiver so that it does not try to upmix everything. Leave DD and DTS raw/direct. If you're still getting only 5-channels without LFE, then it could be something else. But start by changing your DSPs, and report back. I still have my ps2 but considering upgrading to the ps3 I have noticed a few issues coming up on forums is it a good machine or a lemon? If you're only seeing "a few issues" on forums, of all places, you can safely assume it's a pretty damned reliable machine. ;) fourstar77 05-26-09, 11:06 AM I have a 40 GB PS3 that is about 1 year old, and I often use it to watch BD's and DVD's. I have been having a lot of problems recently when I am done with a DVD, eject that DVD, and put in a new DVD. The PS3 auto senses the DVD and attempts to start playing it. Then the screen goes blank, and won't play the DVD. I have waited for 10-15 minutes for the PS3 to start playing the DVD, but nothing happens. I have tried hitting "Play" and "Stop" on my remote to no avail. Sometimes it allows me to eject the disc, but sometimes the system just beeps at me and refuses to eject the disc. When I am able to eject the disc, reinserting the disc usually results in the same blank screen. The only solution that has worked for me is shutting off the PS3 with the switch in the back (the power button on the front won't shut the PS3 off). That works most of the time, but even that does not work on some occasions. I have the latest firmware available via the PS3 update feature via internet. Also, I have my PS3 in a very large stereo cabinet with a lot of airflow (the cabinet has mesh around it and an open back). The PS3 is rarely even warm to the touch. I have not been having problems once the DVD begins to play, only when I try to switch discs (i.e. switching to Disc 2 of a tv series, or a multi disc movie). Advice? Thanks! Edit: fortunately, my PS3 is within warranty, so I am sending it back in. I am, however, curious about whether this issue has happened to others, and if the cause is known. RazViper 05-28-09, 10:57 PM You might want to check your AVR settings and once the movie is playing have the AVR use Surround Decode and/or Auto. I'd check for a loose feed cable as well. Does this only happen on your PS3? You get proper PLII or DD 5.1 when ch surfing cable or OTA? Yes, I was getting proper Dolby PLII while watching standard cable (although I usually have the TV set to 5-channel stereo when viewing OTA). So it was only a problem with the PS3. However... Sounds like you have your listening modes/DSPs configured incorrectly on your receiver. If you're still getting only 5-channels without LFE, then it could be something else. But start by changing your DSPs, and report back. You hit the nail on the head. I think I was confused/unclear about the difference between Dolby PLII and Dolby Digital (sorry, I'm a bit of a noob at setting up a home theater). My AVR was trying to upmix the movies/games as PLII, but since it couldn't, then it was just automatically reverting to 5-ch stereo. I adjusted the settings and now it clearly states playing in Dolby Digital and sounds great. Thanks for the help. I was going crazy trying to figure this out and had convinced myself that I had issues with the settings on the PS3, but you both confirmed they were correct, so that narrowed down the problem to the AVR. Problem solved! confidenceman 05-29-09, 01:37 AM Problem solved!Good news! ;) ben2e 05-31-09, 03:01 AM I'm using HDMI through a receiver. I've tried switching cables, connecting straight to the TV, but the only thing that seems to fix it is to turn off then on the unit via the power switch. I've seen a few posts where people lose video after switching modes, but mine just seems to go after doing nothing that I'm aware. I hear the audio but that's it. Is this typical ? I went through the process of sending the unit back to Sony (I haven't mailed it yet). I'm wondering if that will be a waste of time. I hear they may just send you and old beat-up unit as the repair. It's also of course difficult to troubleshoot as it happens infrequently. Any advice ? killer2293 06-02-09, 04:57 PM I have been reading the forums for hours and I have tried all of the solutions listed. I have my PS3 hooked up to a Sony Bravia TV via HDMI. I have the sound running via optical out to a old sony receiver. When I first got my PS3 a few months ago I was able to watch Blue Ray Movies and have the sound be Dolby Digital 5.1. It worked with no problems. I updated to Firmware 2.76 now I cannot get Dolby Digital playback when I am watching Blue Ray Movies. When I watch the previews it plays back in Dolby Digital. When I am on the menu it plays back in dolby digital. When it goes to the movie I have to watch the movie in stereo PCM not Dolby Digital. I have tried every settings tweak that I have read and it has not worked. I am able to play games in dolby digital and watch standard DVDs in dolby digital. I would not be worried about it if it never worked due to the fact that I have an old receiver, but It worked when I first got my PS3 in March. I am at a loss. Any help would be appreciated. I am on Bitstream plpayback on both Video Settings and Sound settings. I am just confused at why it would allow Dolby Digital playback and then all of a sudden not allow it. Thanks Again. imdjenk 06-02-09, 06:48 PM I have been reading the forums for hours and I have tried all of the solutions listed. I have my PS3 hooked up to a Sony Bravia TV via HDMI. I have Quantum Solace and Taken. I select the English 1 track on the disc. When I do that Stereo PCM plays through the AVR. A blu-ray player? Try that, and that should tell you whether it's a display issue. Is the PS3 running through anything (like an AVR)? You've already tested different cables, so it's (probably) not that. If none of those things works, then it could be your PS3. splinters 06-07-09, 08:56 PM Tried that already, thanks. No luck. If all your controllers are having problems, sounds like your bluetooth antenna or chip might be busted. Try the controllers on another ps3 to verify. It has been working fine for one and a half year without any glitch. Yesterday while watching Kung Fu Panda the movie froze and the system got stuck. Using the eject button the movie came out properly and the system menu was working fine. When I inserted the disc again, the movie menu etc. came and I selected the chapter but it froze again. The disc is brand new and has been played on this very PS3 once before. So I shut down the system normally by the proper procedure. I thought maybe it had heated up. Today I put in FIFA 09 but the system was not recognizing any disc in the PS3. I ejected the disc properly and put it in and repeated this procedure a few times but to no avail. Even in the system menu it doesn't show any disc there under the game or movie menus according the respective disc. Once it did play but I switched off the auto-start option. After that nothing. Previously, it used to take 1 second to detect a disc and instantly get out of the PS3 menu and into the disc menu. Can anybody please chime in as to what the problem might be? Does the PS3 require service of the lens or is it something else? I cover the PS3 when not in use to protect it from dust and the PS3 is not used that frequently. Thanks! From a networking perspective, getting a router will probably help if you want to share your internet connection to other PC's beyond your ps3. That said, the way to reset your cable modem is to hold down the reset switch for x seconds (check the cable modem manual for details). A hard reset will allow you to change interfaces and won't have you stuck with a non-working router. If you buy the router, you shoudl be able to return it in the first 30 days anyways. As for why your internet connection works and you can't get to the ps store, that I'm not totally sure. Make sure you signed up for an account and you can properly sign-in. Otherwise probably worth a call to sony tech support. -Splints parallax1 06-12-09, 03:15 AM Well, that's disappointing a bit seeing that I didn't excessively use it in the first place. I appreciate it. toby10 06-12-09, 11:23 AM Josette: Well your answers do help in identifying the problem. You certainly have a general connection problem, not just a PS Store issue. X-over cable = a cross-over cable = RJ45 basic networking cable but a couple of wires are reversed (crossed). Some devices require these in some situations, some devices can auto sense the type of cable and it doesn't matter. I'd suggest getting a WiFi router whether you intend on using the WiFi aspect or not. They are not much more (if at all more) than a basic wired only router. But I'd bet you will likely wish you had WiFi capability in the future as more and more devices are becoming WiFi capable. You can just turn off the WiFi part for now with a simple mouse click. ;) wxguy23 06-12-09, 08:13 PM I have looked through the forums for some help, most advise I have tried already. I have had a PS3 and Direct TV hooked to it via a HDMI Switcher using imput 6. I have had no problems until this past Monday. All of a sudden without ever having a problem with HDMI, my PS3 will not display, yet my Direct TV works fine again, both using imput 6 and HDMI via a switcher. What I have done: 1. Spent 4 hours with Sony and PS3 people. I have unplugged the TV and did different resets on the PS3 at least a dozen times. 2. Hooked PS3 up directly to the back of TV with same cord that is used for Direct TV-nothing. New HDMI-nothing. Routed into the switcher the same way as DTV-nothing, but DTV works with HDMI. 3. Tried neighbors PS3-Same problem. 4. Connected using AV cords-works in 480i mode. Hooked up HDMI and was "detected". Selected the option in PS3 and screen still blank on imput 6(HDMI). 5. Checked a newer Element TV and had no problem with HDMI in all modes. Made sure to custom set 1080i on my Element tv just in case and went back to original tv-still same problem. 6. Cussed at it. Seem that when I do turn on the PS3, my screen will flicker and even turn a darker shade of black using the HDMI. The screen will say video 6, 480i even though the 480i defaults are turned off. Again, not an issue using HD content on DTV as widescreen and HD is auto detected and displayed. I have the 80g system purchased in Dec. and have had no problems with games, blue ray and usb-personal videos. I am lucky if I turned the system on 3 times a week. What gives? No one knows-Sony or the local techs they have had me call. Thanks imdjenk 06-13-09, 01:15 AM WX, I'm sure you tried this because you state that you tried various resets but just in case: Turn the PS3 on by holding down the power button and listening to the second beep. This starts it in the basic graphics mode. Set video to HDMI 720P and see what happens. Also you can refer to this thread, not sure if a resolution was ever reached though: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/archive/index.php/t-961466.html Josette 06-13-09, 08:17 AM Josette: Well your answers do help in identifying the problem. Thanks, I guess I'll get a wireless router since they can be used wired as well, and cost pretty much the same as a wired router. Any suggestions on one that is EXTREMELY easy to set up, since I know absolutely nothing about routers? I was looking at the Linksys WRT54G2, as it seems to be made for people who have absolutely no experience with routers. My concern is that the furnace and all its ductwork is directly between the computer and the PS3. Even though the total distance is only about 20', there's also a floor to go through, and I'm unsure about how that would effect the strength of the signal. Do you think this would really stand a good chance of solving my connection problems? I guess I just need a little encouragement to cheer me up :D It seems like about 99% of people have no trouble at all connecting their PS3 to the web, and it sucks to be in the 1%. toby10 06-13-09, 09:03 AM Thanks, I guess I'll get a wireless router since they can be used wired as well, and cost pretty much the same as a wired router. I use the WRT54GL, they are quite solid. You are going wired anyway so don't worry about WiFi location right now. Routers can be easily repositioned with simple (and cheap) RJ45 cables. There is no guarantee a router will resolve the problem, but it sure can't hurt to try it. :) Josette 06-13-09, 01:22 PM Hey, I got it working! :D :D :D I ran easy setup, tried to connect to the internet, failed. Unplugged the modem for 30 seconds, then ran easy setup again, tried to connect to the internet, and failed again. Unplugged the modem for 30 seconds, ran easy setup, and third time's the charm I guess :D I was under the mistaken impression that if you tried something and it didn't work, it would be pointless to keep doing the same thing over and over - me and my silly logic. Thanks again for the advice everybody! I'll feel much better about spending some money on a router and getting it permanently hooked up now. splinters 06-14-09, 12:02 AM Congrads. Make sure you turn on wireless security, I would recommend WPA2-PSK (AES) if you can. It's not for your ps3 as much as it is to secure your internet surfing on your pc from prying eyes and keeping from spammers from doing some drive by spamming onto the internet. -Splints Darth Indy 06-14-09, 04:47 AM Ok, so I start playing COD: Modern Warfare and I notice there is no sound coming outta surround speakers, I put my head right up to speakers and no sound at all was coming from them. I knew it wasn't the fault of the 4 surrounds since I had just watched a few scenes from some movies. I quit the game and then loaded it back up and this time the surround worked. I then played some Ninja Gaiden Sigma and thought hmmm there seems to be no surround activity, sure enough nothing was coming from surrounds again. This time I switched the receiver's input to something else then switched back and it worked as the I could hear the surrounds now when playing. I've never had this happen before ever when playing games or watching blu-ray's. Only thing I can think of is I hooked up a new hdmi cable going from the PS3 to the receiver before playing tonight. Bad hdmi cable maybe? EDIT: This was after watching a blu-ray and I saw that people were reporting this kinda problem way back in 2006. Shape 06-15-09, 11:14 PM Well, my PS3's blu-ray drive died tonight while watching Serenity. Luckily it is available on the 360 to stream in HD from Netflix, so I got to finish the movie. :) Really great movie! Sucky Blu-Ray drive, though. :( JimWinVA 06-19-09, 06:21 PM Hello again. I first posted here w/ a problem getting DD over optical, which I never was able to resolve. So, I broke down and updated my Denon avr (2805 to 2903CI) to get HDMI. So now I get the lossless codecs. Just set it up and they sound sweet! However, when I try to play an SACD, I can't get 5.1 At first, it came in stereo, so I went to music setup and chose all the available options (5.1, 7.1, 48khz, 92, etc.). Then I got multichannel in displayed on the Denon, but still only sound from FL and FR speakers. I'm using HDMI PCM out, of course. Any ideas? toby10 06-19-09, 06:36 PM Hello again. I believe it is the newer ones that do not support SACD. Here is a Wiki chart (scroll down on page) of PS3 models and associated features. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3 I believe the "new" 80gb units are in fact the "old" 40gb units with a larger HD. Notice neither offer SACD capabilities. SirDrexl 06-19-09, 07:42 PM Yup, 192k is 2 ch only. Well, SACD uses DSD, which doesn't use the sampling rate the way PCM does. It's about 2.8Mhz, but with 1 bit instead of 16 or 24. The reason they have stereo as well is to offer the original audio track for purists (but in higher quality than CD), like how older movies may offer the original mono or whatever. I can just use 5.1 ext in from my dvd player, but was hoping for a digital signal so my avr could apply audyssey processing. That's because the PS3 would output what technically is a multichannel signal when playing any source, leaving the non-applicable speakers silent. This was a common complaint from people who wanted to apply Dolby Pro Logic II(x) processing to CDs and MP3s. I don't know if that was a design decision or a bug, but I believe it was fixed in a recent update. If you haven't updated your PS3, you should soon. Zadmax 06-24-09, 03:40 PM I have an early 60GB model PS3 and it seems that something has gone wrong with the audio using HDMI to whatever TV I hook it to. The video is fine using HDMI, but the audio has horrible static/crackling. This wasn't always the case as it used to be fine with both audio & video. Audio settings using HDMI are Linear PCM and automatic. Anyway, I tried leaving the HDMI output from the PS3 to my TV for the video (since that works fine) and using the original PS3 cable (yellow/red/white) to carry the sound to my TV using those hook ups. I went into the sound settings on the PS3 and changed it from HDMI to that type of hookup (can't remember the exact option name..RCA?) but no matter what I try, i get no audio from the TV in that mode. I have tried plugging the red/white inputs from the PS3 RCA cable to all the audio inputs on the back of my Samsung LN32B640. Could I be doing something wrong, or do you think it could just be my PS3 not functioning properly anymore? Is it possible to use the HDMI for video while using one of the other cables straight to the TV for audio ? This is driving me nuts. Thanks for any input. Thanks Edward, but I am not using a receiver for this hook up. It is going straight to the TV. I do have a receiver/surround system, but I leave that for my other TV. I wanted to be able to use my smaller 32" for gaming with the PS3 and just use the TV's speakers. However, I do use the PS3 for playing Blu-rays with my surround system and my other TV when not using the PS3 for gaming. In that case, I use the optical out from the PS3 to my receiver which works fine (no static/crackling). I want to be able to have my main TV/surround system for watching cable while simultaneously using my smaller TV with the PS3 for gaming when I have friends over. I have tried several brand new HDMI cables with my PS3 and none of them work passing the audio straight to either TV without the horrible static/cracking occuring. I should note that I do in fact get audio from the PS3, but it is not tolerable with the static/crackling noise also coming through. At this point I have to assume my PS3 HDMI out is going bad, or at least the audio part has gone bad as I used to have my PS3 hooked directly to my TV through HDMI for video & audio with no such problems. This only started to occur one day a month or so ago when I tried to play a standard DVD in my PS3. That was the first time I ever noticed the audio problem, and it has persisted ever since. Aside from the HDMI problem, the thing I would really like to figure out is why I can't seem to get any audio from the AV multi out of the PS3 while using the HDMI out for video. I have read that I should be able to do this, yet it does not seem to work. If you have a receiver with HDMI, you could connect an HDMI cable to that and an HDMI to DVI cable to the TV. If you don't have such a receiver, you would use an optical cable for audio, such as this one: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10229&cs_id=1022901&p_id=1419&seq=1&format=2 Or, if you don't have a receiver at all, and for some reason your TV doesn't have an optical input, you'll just use the A/V cable that came with the system. Whatever you do, make sure to set it up in the XMB. You may also need to set up something in the TV to tie the optical/analog audio input to the DVI video signal. The problem is that my PS3 is having trouble reading PS3 discs. I bought my 80GB BC PS3 back in December of 2007 and it always read my PS3 games right off the bat before but slowly over the last month my PS3 has struggled harder and harder to read PS3 games. I contacted Sony a while back and I have had success with loading my game while in a demo and after inserting another media disc like a DVD or PS2 game, however getting the PS3 discs to read by themselves takes usually at least 3 tries unless the PS3 is having a good day. Also I have completely restored my PS3 and that did not fix the problem, but I may have narrowed down my problems list to possibly being a laser defect with Blu-Ray discs. Sadly I don't have a Blu Ray movie to see what happens but I know both DVDs and PS2 games still load on the first try and PS3 games always load eventually. So a total lens failure seems unlikely but in relation to Blu-Ray games it may be. In the end DVDs and PS2 games still work perfectly but PS3 games are struggling to read. Afew month ago, the PS3 played thru the receiver no problem, but now the receiver doesn't recognize the PS3. If I hook the PS3 directly into the TV, it plays no problem. I have tried different HDMI cables into different inputs on the receiver, but nothing works. I've also tried switching back & forth from Linear to bitstream.. Any Suggestions? Thanks iazy 07-31-09, 07:55 PM i have a wifi problem. My wifi green light does not turn on. i ran out of warranty so i paid for a refurbished model and that never worked, so they sent me another one and the same problem and i'm now on my third refurbished ps3. Called sony they said i can have another ps3 but i'd rather just have something that works. for two years i had no problem with my original ps3 connection, the modem settings hasn't changed so why no wifi light. if i connect through the ethernet it works for around 30 secs and then says no ethernet cable attached. is it the modem or am i just unlucky enough to get 3 ps3's with the same problem? I've been searching through the net and their is definitely a problem with the wifi hardware on the 60 gb model but 3 refurbished models with the same issue is more than a coincidence. please help i dnt want a 4th ps3. i've tried all the basics such as restore and reset. this doesn't help! any suggestions would be greatly welcomed! parallax1 08-01-09, 01:47 AM I think your problem is with your modem, not the PS3. Upon trying to change the audio out from optical to HDMI to get loseless audio, I am provided with the previously mentioned error. I'm not sure what error you are referring to, but I see you have a Denon 1910. Have you completely followed batpig's Denon-to-English setup (http://www.batpigworld.com/)guide? HDMI from the PS3 to your AVR works great for both audio and video. You just may have the settings wrong on the PS3 or an input assigned incorrectly on the AVR. Also, exactly how is your network set up? iazy 08-03-09, 02:16 PM Alright just to add insult to injury i just went out and bought a new belkin N150 router today and still the same issue, i just called my isp and they said the line is fine i should just activate upnp which i've always done! I'm now about ready to give up! This is a joke i also brought my ps3 to my friends house and it connected straight away! so here's what i've done so far, i had 3 ps3's all with the same connection problem, it will scan or if i using the ethernet connect to the internet for around 10 secs and then cut off. it sounds like a firewall issue so i took all that down, then i thought it was a modem issue so i bought a new one (£70 may i add!) and then i thought it was my isp but my internet and all other wifi devices are working fine. When i restore the ps3 i can scan (easy or custom it makes no difference) and connect to my network however within 10 secs the connection is gone. when i turn on the ps3 the green wifi light turns on for 10 secs then cuts out. if i attempt to reconfigure the connection it says ' no access point found' and i get a series of 800 connection error messages. i've also tried manually putting in the ssid plus info and i get another 800 connection error. i just believe i'm not supposed to have my ps3 online! My issue is that it was working for around 2 years perfectly so i have no idea whats changed! iazy 08-03-09, 02:22 PM oh yeah also to add i'm using wpa2 security and i've tried it without any security and i have the same issue! splinters 08-04-09, 01:18 AM Hmm, quite a bit has happened, so let me ask a few basic questions. 1) How does the problem react when you are using a wired connection instead of a wireless? 2) What are the wireless settings you are using? Interesting issue. Sounds like there are a variety of issues that may be going on, but wireless interference seems to the primary culprit. Just so you know, there are three channels that don't overlap, channels 1, 6, and 11. Most routers ship by default on channel 6 which means it is the most used channel and the most likely to have issues. Stay with 1 or 11 depending on what works best (or channel scan on your laptop to see which channels are the most prevalent, you will need a non-MS wireless utility like what Intel, Broadcom, or Atheros ships with their wireless chips). The other thing that might have been an issue is the cable modem might not like changing routers very much, so it's ideal to do a hard reset of the router before plugging up your Belkin AP. But if it's working ok on your pcs and other devices, this is not likely the problem. Hope your problems stay clear. If you continue to have problems on all 3 channels (1, 6, and 11), then I would recommend a powerline networking solution like the Linksys PLK300. -Splints John Mason 08-07-09, 01:05 PM Can anyone outline what differences I'd have hooking up my PS3 with only a 10/100/1000 switch (wired) versus a wired router? You may have to buy a router anyway, but someone else more familiar with switches can answer for sure. About the gigabit (T1000) speed, it will really only make a difference for transferring files between computers, and both of the computers need to support gigabit to get the higher speed. It won't make the internet any faster, as it's going to be well below T100 speed, and the modem is almost certainly T100. phdeane 08-07-09, 04:51 PM Can anyone outline what differences I'd have hooking up my PS3 with only a 10/100/1000 switch (wired) versus a wired router? The signal stays in PCM 48hz. 7.1 channel regardless of whether I bitstream or use LPCM. The only way I can get a dolby digital game to play in dolby digital, is to go into the audio menu of the PS3 and uncheck all the multichannel pcm sound boxes. This leaves only dolby digital and DTS (and some of the pcm 2.0 modes). Then, the receiver is forced to use the 5.1 dolby digital mode to play the game, and does so without a problem. Now, if I bitstream a standard dvd movie, I can get the 5.1 dolby digital to work with it, whether all boxes are checked or not. It only seems to occur when playing videogames. Thanks for your response schnurmac, but the game is in Dolby Digital DTS according to the game box, so the only thing I am doing by unchecking the pcm boxes on the ps3 audio menu, is to limit the options of the ps3 and force it to bitstream in dolby digital 5.1 via hdmi, rather than using multi-channel pcm modes like it prefers to do when playing games. Also, I don't believe I can get my receiver to do this. Granted, I'm still learning because I've only had it a week, but from what I learned from calling Yamaha is that the receiver can only work with whatever is being sent to it. It cannot change the way the signal is being sent. So, if the ps3 wants to bitstream (note: ps3 is not in LPCM, so why is it bitstreaming multi-channel modes anyway?) multi-channel 7.0 as a preference, it is an issue with the game console and not the receiver. I'm beginning to think that this is the normal way of things for the ps3. I think that what folks are doing is just running the ps3 in LPCM mode and forgetting about the dolby digital stuff when playing bluray discs. This sounds like basically the same problem I asked about way back on page 67 (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=16311625#post16311625). The short version based on what I've learned: yes, this is a problem with the PS3 and not your receiver. No, there is no solution at this time apart from the workaround you mentioned. But it's nice to see someone else frustrated by it. I almost never hear anyone talk about this bug. There might be a bit of good news for you, if I'm reading your post right. When the PS3 outputs multi-channel PCM, it has already automatically decoded the audio (whether it's Dolby Digital, DTS-HD, or whatever) and is outputting raw sound data to your receiver. This is the same job your receiver would do, so you're getting the exact same sound you would have if if were just bitstreaming the audio data. There's really no reason to use bitstream on PS3 at all, as far as I'm aware. So the real nuisance of the bug is this: since it stubbornly insists on sending 7.1 channel PCM sound all the time, the PS3 is actually sending blank channels to those unused rear speakers. This means you can't use ProLogic or other matrix processing to fill in the holes and give richer sound. It's not a big deal with 5.1 games, because you're just hearing what everybody else without 7.1 sound hears. But with 2 channel material it's very annoying. For instance, I recently replayed Final Fantasy XII, which uses 2 channel sound with support for ProLogic II. I couldn't get any surround sound at all until I went and manually disabled all of the PS3's audio options higher than 2 channels. After that, the sound output properly as stereo and I could turn on ProLogic II to get sound out of all 7 speakers. The problem doesn't apply to everything. If I remember right based on my tests, it affects everything that runs through the optical drive: games, DVDs, BluRays. But everything else is processed properly. For instance, the audio format changes on the fly as it should for video streamed over the media server, media files stored on the harddrive, and downloaded games like Fat Princess. Earlier this year, Sony patched a similar blank channel bug that applied to music, so that might be what the Sony reps were thinking of when they suggested this wasn't an issue anymore. But the bug still applies to just about everything except music, even though for some reason no one ever seems to complain about it. I think it only affects audio output over HDMI, so maybe there still just aren't enough people using that. milhavoc 09-02-09, 12:40 AM About PS3 deactivation okay, so before i sell my PS3 i know i have to deactivate the accounts on my ps3, but i just remembered on my cousins PS3 i set up 2 of my accounts there as well (my main one and a usa account), do i have to deactivate those accounts on his ps3 aswell or will i be fine just deactivating from my own ps3? thanks forcedfedgtp 09-03-09, 10:20 PM Hello all, I am looking for some insight to this problem I am having. I have it hooked up using HDMI and the PS3 menus all look sort of fuzzy both in terms of the pictures and the text. Blu-ray movies and all my games look fine though when I play them. I have had the PS3 for 2 years without this problem, and not it is consistent. Has anyone had a similar issue or know of a potential solution? SmokeCapone 09-11-09, 02:02 PM Im having an issue with a couple games I just tested but here it was went down. I play alot of madden and maybe my TV has had enough lol, but last night my girl disconnected the surge protector accidentaly while my PS3 was on. I get everything back up and running and everything is ok, i play a few games just to be sure and everything was fine. THis morning I get up and play some madden and get kicked from the server due to a new roster update. When I get back online to download the update I dont have any sound at all while this is happening. I called SONY but I do not have my cables that came with my system, they're somewhere but I cant find them yet to complete the test but my d/l games work just fine. I am having no sound from the XMB when I try to load Socom or Madden but my motorstorm workd and sounded fine. But as soon as I put in madden or socom i get no sound at all, any advice on what I should do next. EDIT: After I typed that above I had bought some more HDMI cables and still didnt work, I then took my PS3 to local repair shop and it worked on there TV perfectly fine with my old HDMI cable. So I get back home to found out the my HDMI ports on my TV are screwed up (atleast thats what we thought) so I hooked up the RCAs to the PS3 while I had my HDMI connected and the sound came back. I updated to the latest firmaware 3.01 and now it works again without the RCA jacks. Dunno know if that was due to that but it works fine now and I am happy. Delan 09-11-09, 11:16 PM Argh, thank you. Ugh Thank you guys. I'm having the EXACT same problem. I'm using a Onkyo TX-SR606 so its definitely not your receiver. I didn't know about that work around with deselecting the PCM's. It sounds a bit sloppy but its better than nothing I guess. ImG2theB 09-18-09, 04:25 PM I have a 92TXH, PS3 Slim, and a 65V10 and I am having problems when turning the PS3 on. When everything is powered up the PS3 isn't being displayed on the TV and the receiver is flashing a format error. I dont get this error when the PS3 is set to 480i but when I have 1080P selected on the PS3 it wont work. I have to turn off the receiver and then turn back on for the error to go away and display the PS3 menu. I run everything HDMI to the receiver and then 1 HDMI to the TV. Any suggestions on how to fix this or what the issue is? I'm not sure if it is the update or the TV since I just got the TV and also did the update at the same time. No, it doesn't have the bitstream option. However, it really may not make a difference. It seems like the option is mainly good for special cases where the receiver doesn't handle the PCM properly, and for people who just love to see the indicator light for the lossless codec come on. :) I would go ahead and get the receiver, and just use your current system. If you ever decide to get a slim PS3, then you could use bitstream. Cameosis 10-04-09, 11:40 AM Okay so here's the deal. I've participated in online gaming for about a year now. Things have been great up until this summer when I got Madden 2010. The problem is that I keep getting disconnected from the internet but only with the PS3, the computer works fine so it isn't an ISP related issue. I have an ethernet cord for the PS3 and one for the computer so I have to unplug one to plug in the other. Sometimes I can go all day without a hitch and other days (like today) every game is just a countdown to a d/c. usually it takes place within the first 3-4 mintues of starting a game. Sometimes I get disconnected from the PSN in the lobbies and then I just have to turn off the PS3 coz I know I won't make it thru a game. What irritates me is that, to my knowledge, everything is exactly the same on my PS3 as last year. Here are my set-up details: Wired connection Westell Wirespeed DSL Modem Media Sharing: Off (I googled and that seems to be the standard answer for internet problems so just letting yall know in advance) toby10 10-04-09, 11:53 AM Might have an IP conflict or DHCP screw up. I'd suggest a network reboot to start: - unplug router - turn off any/all computers - turn off any/all other networked devices (like PS3) Now plug router back in, wait till it completely re-boots. Then turn on your other devices one at a time, let each completely re-boot. See if PS3 functions properly. Another simple test: turn off any/all networked computers and devices except PS3 & router, see if PS3 functions as expected. Then turn on other devices individually till the PS3 disconnects, there is your IP conflict device. Cameosis 10-04-09, 12:07 PM Hmmm. Makes sense. I have tried the whole unplug/plug in modem thing but I never unplugged everything and started step by step. It is a little weird coz I do actively try to find solutions but I never seem to get consistent results. I'll give your advice a shot, thanks for the advice ejb3232 10-04-09, 04:20 PM noob here, trying to gte my ps3 connected to my fios router and plugged in all the addresses and settings and it keeps saying access point not found...any ideas? Jim S 10-22-09, 11:28 AM I just noticed noise coming from my 40gb PS3 the other day while it was off. Sounds like the optical drive but not completely sure. My shutdowns are performed in the Xbar interface by a remote macro and the PS3 is definitely in suspend. If I cycle the power switch the (drive?) noise is silenced. There aren't any background downloads and this occurs even when there is no disc in the drive. Anyone, encountered this before? rallyrussell 10-25-09, 05:14 PM I apologize if this is too long/detailed, but I like to be thorough ;-) New around here - 2nd year medical student needing some technical help ;-) I've been researching this for about 9 hours, and the internet isn't yielding any answer-bearing fruit(s)... I have a 60g 1st gen PS3, and a HP MP2210 projector. This projector is exceedingly hard to find help for...HP's site/manuals/troubleshooting leaves a lot to be desired, and I've looked on not less than 35 AV/PS3/Projector forums - people here seem to be the most informed, so here I am [cursed by usefulness, y'all are...flattery never hurts :-) ] Apparently I don't have enough posts to paste legitimate links yet...so just copy & paste these hoes Projector specs: projectorcentral.com/HP-mp2210.htm h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00376428&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00376455&tmp_task=solveCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=427969 The projector's manual (and the 2nd link above) says it accepts 480i/p, 575i/p, 720p, 1080i HDTV inputs (manual also says it accepts 1080p) It has VGA, S-Video, and composite input, and it's native display is 1024x768 (4:3) I have verified that the both the projector and PS3 are running their latest firmware versions (1.2w & 3.01, respectively) These are connected via: AV multi-out to VGA cable (appears to have a transcoder) Link: mayflash.com/vgabox/vga004/vga004.htm The cable info says it is compatible with 480P/720P/1080I/1080P when used with the PS3 game console, with frequency 50/60/75HZ Now, for the issue... I can only get the setup to work in 2 modes over VGA, 480p and 1080i. 1080i works great - the XMB and any videos I play over the media server are shown properly, and games that support 1080i look fabulous...but 720p games are being downscaled to 480p, which blows. DVDs are also only being displayed in 480p, but this is not as large an issue as the game-stuff. If I set the PS3 to display in either 720p or 1080p, the projector does not detect the video signal, and displays the message "Out of Range" after scanning the VGA input for 5-10 secs. I'm assuming this message has something to do with either the refresh rates, aspect ratio, or horizontal/vertical offsets - but I am having little/no luck finding how to adjust these rates on either the projector or PS3, and I've been lookin for about 8 hours. Any ideas? The projector has an option for widescreen input (on/off), but changing it does not alter any of the above behavior (1080i still works, 720p/1080p don't). I find all of this extremely odd because the projector's manual states "if possible, select progressive format when hooking up a video source" WTF? My only thought is that maybe the cable's transcoder-majig is changing the progressive output(s) into something that the projector doesn't recognize? As far as I can tell, AV multi-out to VGA is my only option other than AV multi-out to component cable (from PS3) coupled with a component-to-vga cable (to projector)...which I'm assuming will yield unfortunately similar results :-/ If anyone can state with certainty whether this true (or more importantly, not!) that'd be, like, super. Thanks in advance, Russ uni_panther 10-29-09, 06:59 PM I am no expert rallyrussell but I will take a crack at this and see if we can't make some progress. I do see a few things I know why it is happening. Ok so to start I never seen anywhere in the manual link you provided that it accepted a 1080p input. Maybe I read it wrong but I don't see it. Now you say it is hooked up AV-Multi-out to VGA but what is the setting you have selected on the PS3 under settings>display settings>video output? The actual AV-multi-out is restricted to 480i/480p so I don't know how you would be getting 1080i. That one has me stumped but we will move forward for now. The DVD part I can answer you for sure. It says right in the PS3 settings under settings>video settings then BD/DVD upscaler that "When playing copyrighted-protected DVD content such as commercially available DVD-Video, an HDMI cable is required to upscale the video content" So that is why on DVD movies you are getting 480p. No HDMI, no upscale. Now I am not familiar with projectors at all but apparently what seems to be happening is your system is treating it like people with old HDTVs that were 1080i only and didn't support 720p. Since many early games on the PS3 didn't support 1080i resolutions these games would revert to 480p as the common resolution between the two pieces. This seems to be what is happening to you but I don't know why it isn't recognizing the 720p as almost all PS3 games are native 720p. I can understand if you only set it to 1080p because with your projector not accepting a full 1920X1080 input the PS3 doesn't think it supports 1080p so it would then just revert to 480p. That part makes sense. Why it doesn't let you have 720p though I don't know. My GUESS is that cable you have linked is the culprit. I think if you changed and went component to VGA and selected component in the display settings of the PS3 it would solve your problem. Just for the hell of it I think even in your current setup if you selected component right now it might work properly to be honest. I have never seen a cable like that, that only used 1 analog video and was able to fit all resolutions but it would be worth a shot. I would say that you have only multi AV/Scart selected and that is your problem however since you are in fact getting 1080i that sort of rules that out, and obviously you don't have composite selected so I am theorizing you already have component however I am taking a lot of liberties in my guesses. If you DO have component already selected then I say ditch that cable and use an actual AV-multi to component cable and then run that to VGA. That SHOULD clear up your issues. The last way to do it would be to do HDMI to DVI and then DVI to VGA but then you would need to run something separate for external sound. Hope this makes some sense and helps you a bit and doesn't confuse you more. I tried to stay organized. The problem: When playing a game or watching a movie from the PS3 AND listening to the TV speakers only, only part of the sound comes through. Example: I play Tiger Woods golf, and the track(s) with the announcers do not play if I am only using my TV speakers. Same for movies: only part of the soundtrack, usually the background sounds, comes through if using TV speakers only. I suspect that somehow I am blocking a track on the PS3, or perhaps on my AVR. I checked the Sound settings on the PS3 and all the 6-10 Linear PCM settings are checked for 5.1 sound. Is that correct? FYI, if I play the sound on the 5.1 speakers, it's fine. (On the Denon 4308, you can select sound from TV or sound from Amp). Further, if I am watching a movie or show from my Directv DVR on TV speakers only, the sound is fine. My setup: Denon 4308 AVR 5.1 setup, with Definitive Technology speakers PS3, DirecTv DVR, CD, VCR wired into DVR Mitsubishi 1080p LCD 46131 wired into Denon AVR This may or may not be related: lately, options for Dolby or DTS sound only sporadically show up on the 4308's AVR sound menu. That said, perhaps it's a AVR setting issue? I've looked on this thread and not seen anything, although admittedly stopped after a couple of hundred posts :-) Any help would be appreciated. I suspect it's some simple setting that I messed up. I plan on hooking it up. Quick question.. I know with the older model PS3 you had to choose LPCM when watching Blu-Ray. I have an Onkyo 606 which decodes the HD Audio formats. With the new PS3 is it ideal to set it up to always be bitstream? If so, what will be illuminated on the receiver? Also, will I need to make changes to get DD while watching DVD's? Is there a more desirable format for DVD's with the PS3? Really appreciate the help! Hrdluck tingham 11-17-09, 09:36 PM Hey Guys, I just got a new PS3 slim.. I plan on hooking it up. Quick question.. Hrdluck You can chose either one. They should sound the same, but some people might prefer one over the other with their setup. If you select bitstream, the avr should display the hi-def codec.."DTS-MA HD", or "Dolby True HD". You can actually switch the sound formats on the fly while you are watching a BD/DVD with the slim. Just hit the triangle button on the remote while the movie is playing to bring up the menu and go the the AV settings icon, select that, and then select between bitstream and lpcm sound output. You don't need to switch settings when watching DVD's, but you will see "Dolby Digital" if you bitstream, and "Multi Ch In" if you send LPCM on your AVR display. They should sound the same in theory. Stephenisaacs 11-20-09, 03:13 AM As I understand it with the BD/DVD Bitstream/PCM setting (under video settings) in PCM, the PS3 will decode all supported formats to PCM with multiple channels if present. In Bitstream it onpasses the original format. This seems to conflict with the HDMI audio formats (under audio settings) which allows you to pick the audio formats your sound system supports. If you only select PCM 2.0 48Khz and PCM 2.0 44Khz you might assume a Dolby 5.1 disc would be downconverted to PCM 2.0. I have a data DVD with a Xvid program with Dolby 5.1 audio. When set as mentioned above I hear only intermittant bursts of audio on my TV which is connected via HDMI. When I enable the Dolby 5.1 checkbox in the HDMI audio settings along with the two PCM 2.0 choices the audio is heard normally. The PS3 seems to be sending the Dolby 5.1 despite the Bitstream/PCM setting. I am assuming my TV is decoding the 5.1 itself. My question is why isn't the PS3 doing the decoding of the 5.1 and onpassing PCM 2.0 to the TV? It works fine on Blu-Ray discs without enabling the Dolby 5.1 checkbox. Can someone offer an explanation for this? zoro 11-20-09, 01:11 PM You can chose either one. They should sound the same, but some people might prefer one over the other with their setup. I could only get DTS-MA after de-selecting DTS Bitstreaming. Or am I missing another setting? In fact, the BD didn't even offer standard DTS, only DTS-MA, yet only sent standard DTS 5.1. Ok, I'm getting confused typing this, much less understanding it. :) SirDrexl 11-22-09, 05:07 PM I don't remember reading anything about the 3.0 update doing anything regarding audio, other than the ability to output multiple ways at the same time (like optical and HDMI). Note that DTS-HD MA has the legacy DTS as part of the track, as the core. You couldn't have a DTS-HD MA track without legacy DTS. It won't be in a menu though, as it should just automatically send what the equipment supports. That's one of the strengths of DTS-HD MA (and TrueHD when connected to a DD track) - you often don't have to select the proper track in the menu. I cant tell since my system wont respond at all but I know I was recently forced to update the OS recently and I know 3.0 was a mandatory so I am pretty sure I was running 3.0. But I was also playing drakes 2 which from what I read is known to have a freezing problem with 3.0 and that’s why they released 3.1. I usually update whenever the game or system calls for it so I or the wife may have updated to the 3.1 but I really cant remember updating beyond 3.0. Curious for feedback and opinions on PQ and functionality. Thanks  Hi Toby - I would encourage you to check out the last few weeks of posts in the PS3 as a Blu-ray Player (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=650544) thread. There have been quite a few posts there. In a nutshell, the few titles that are in HD are a little better than DVD, but the vast majority of the titles are not in HD and thus are not even as good as DVD. Of course, your connection speed and TV size affects the PQ. The main issue with functionality is that you must load a disc every time you want to stream. Eventually Sony will incorporate Netflix streaming in the PS3 through a firmware update, but probably not for quite a few months. LR6AGB001 12-18-09, 11:20 PM So I recently picked up a PS3 Slim and I recall reading something about setting the PS3 to 1080p and let the TV downscale it to 720p or something to that effect. My problem is, bluetooth connection seem to be dropping. I'd turn on the PS3 with the controller wirelessly, and while the unit is on the solid red light on the controller would disappear and I'd lose control of the PS3 with the controller. Pressing the PS button yields the 4 blinking lights on the controller until it fades out, never connecting. This also sometimes occurs to my Logitech Harmony Adapter where my Harmony remote would stop working, and trying to connect the adapter via bluetooth would just have the connect light blink indefinitely. g8rgrad98 12-20-09, 05:05 PM Hello all, my wife just got my son and I a PS3 for Christmas (and we got to open it early!).....but on Arkhum Asylum and the new C.O.D., as well as on DVDs, the voices are not audible. The wireless: Linksys (I know) G Wireless Mode: Mixed WPA, TKIP DHCP enabled DDNS disabled No Access Restrictions DMZ enabled for the IP of the PS3. PS3 set itself up automatically. I would blame the Linksys, I don't know if they killed Sony's puppy or what, but I know they are famous for not working well together, but the old PS3 worked fine, and I don't think anything about the wireless hardware has changed. My system is upgraded to latest software. Thanks for any help. Really don't want to add a new router to the expense of a new PS3. ****ing ylod. Try setting it up manually. Enter all your info. Did you say it had no DNS #'s on the PS3? Get all your info and enter it manually. The DNS And IP that you have in the DMZ. Also is your old PS3 bricked? If not you can back up to a HD and install all data to the new PS3. schnurmac 12-29-09, 09:03 AM problem just started tonight, if I add comments like I'm doing now and select submitt the PS3 freezes the control lock and I need to turn off manually [front]. I have updated to 3.15 to see if that helps but it does not. Any idea's of what could be happening, this is an orginal 60GB that has never had issues. Also I am going to buy a USB HD to back up info [music games] incase it bricks, can I buy and USB HD or does it need to be special? I will try but I don't think it is a DNS issue as I have perfect connectivity to the internet and actually great download speeds when not on PSN. The problem is more getting booted from PSN and slow dl speed while logged in. I guess there could be some packet thing they are trying to push while logged in that is getting blocked which may explain the problem. I backup continually. When using the Sony backup utility, it tells me only certain things can be restored to a new device, those things, as far as I can tell, are saved game data, trophy info, user info, music, pictures, anything that is your "own" data. All DLC and game install data could not be restored with Sony's restore utility. schnurmac 12-29-09, 10:32 AM I will try but I don't think it is a DNS issue as I have perfect connectivity to the internet and actually great download speeds when not on PSN. I just reset my router by unplugging it and Im good to go for awhile. I have issues but deal with because no one can explain. Like Linksys cant tell me after 3 hours on the phone why my MW2 tells me my NAT is strict when I have a static IP on my PS3 and that IP is in the DMZ on my router. I have issues joining certain friend that are the host. I can join them if they are not the host, weird. smastroyin 12-29-09, 10:55 AM I'm pretty sure if you re-install to the same PS3 you will get everything back. All of the info is there, it just refused to put it on the new PS3. I hope for people doing returns through their service center they have another solution. Although I guess they would say their solution is the 5 DL's thing. DeadmanInc 12-29-09, 12:55 PM I just picked up a PS3 Slim (merry christmas to me!) and noticed a very annoying problem. I've got the PS3 hooked up to my Denon 3808ci, which is then hooked up to a Samsung 52a750. Whenever the system switches to 720P I get this loud static sound coming from the TV speakers. Turning the volume down on the TV doesn't reduce it's volume. After some research it appears this is a fairly common issue with this system and I'm wondering what some of you have done to fix this. I've tried a number of different HDMI cables and they all have had the same result. Running the PS3 directly to the TV seems to cure this, but it's not how I want it setup. Do you have audio set to bitstream? If so change it for the HDMI settings. See if that helps. DeadmanInc 12-29-09, 02:10 PM Do you have audio set to bitstream? If so change it for the HDMI settings. DeadmanInc 12-30-09, 04:53 PM well my PS3 is back to making to the crackling sound. rakstr 12-31-09, 10:50 AM Has anyone bought one of the 80Gb refurbs out there? Any warning signs? SlingingSlasher 01-02-10, 01:28 AM cannot get 1080p through hdmi on 50 inch sxrd kd-r50xbr1 this is very frustrating because i was told by both best buy and sony that i should be able to achieve this resolution All games were created to run at 720P natively. My XMB is displaiying at 1080p, but as soon as i launch a game, it would automatically switch itself to run at 720p. jake the ssnake 01-02-10, 12:11 PM Has anyone bought one of the 80Gb refurbs out there? Any warning signs?I'd stay away from refurbed units all together. If it was a ylod and it was repaired, it WILL happen again, eventually. So without knowing actually why it was refurbed, its a big risk, imo. mintchris 01-02-10, 10:43 PM Was watching a movie today and the picture froze. Shut it down and powered back up and wouldnt recognize any the disc. Wouldnt even show in under video on the main PS screen. Tried other discs and a game and a CD and nothing. Reset the system and still nothing. Any thoughts or anyone had something similar happen? gooki 01-03-10, 03:49 AM Blu-ray drive failure. Where would I take it for repairs? Thanks! smastroyin 01-04-10, 10:16 PM So I am still having the problems with the logging out, but I also have a new problem. Went to rent from the video store. I like to do this sometime as a random thing. OK, alls well, charges my account...and then tells me it can't play the video because my other PS3 is registered for video. OK so two things. One - these guys deserve a skull **** for agreeing to this licensing. Essentially, if I wanted to have two running PS3's I would need to have two different Sony Store accounts in order to watch movies on both, in essence I would need to create a second account just for watching movies. Since you can only watch the movie once when it is a rental this seems especially foolish. I understand the point for movies you *BUY* (though I would never do so since a problem with the HDD and it's gone daddy gone), but for movies you rent it really shouldn't matter. Two - do I actually have to sit on hold for half a day just to talk to a customer service weenie to get the bricked PS3 to be unregistered? Or is there something I am missing? gooki 01-04-10, 10:31 PM Oh man that sucks! Is it an expensive thing to get fixed? Where would I take it for repairs? It is actually $180 now for the backwards compatible PS3s. Tipharet 01-08-10, 05:35 PM I recently purchased a 47 in LH 30, and have it all calibrated (finally). I have pretty decent HDMI cables hooked up to PS3 and Xbox360. On PS3 games with lots of movement, Specifically Bayonetta the very top of the LCD across in a perfect line tends be a bit brighter and distorts the image above the line. The image above this line looks a bit out of Sync with the rest of the image. I would personally describe this as clipping. Unfortunately I havent been able to take a pic as it happens fast but is very noticeable. I have tested all HDMI ports, used different HDMI cables and this problem still happens. I have tried all options within the PS3 ( force RGB etc..) and the issue still occurs. I have tested the same exact game on my xbox360 and this does not occur. I have attached an image to kind of show what I am referring to. I dont think this is an issue with the LCD. I am thinking this is a problem with the PS3, but thought I would ask if anyone else has seen this because I dont know exactly what to call it. SirDrexl 01-08-10, 06:30 PM If it looks like the top "strip" is out of sync, you could just be seeing image tearing due to v-sync not being enabled. The Lego games seem to have a lot of this. It's not really something defective with the game. Sometimes the developers just decide to leave v-sync off to get some extra frames per second. If you go to this site, there's an image where you can see it, although it's in the middle of the screen rather than the top: http://www.tweakguides.com/Graphics_9.html Click on the image there to see it. Then again, it shouldn't be brighter. So maybe that's not it. Tipharet 01-08-10, 07:01 PM Yeah I am familiar with Vsync- I am not sure why I did not think of that. Would it be so consistent like that? My exposure to screen tearing is that it can affect all parts of the image just not one specific section, and it is literally a straight line all the way across. Its not always brighter, only when the tearing actually occurs. Would a developer leave Vsync off in one version of the game vs another for different consoles? EDIT: Welp, found my issue. Look at this: http://www.eurogamer.net/videos/digital-foundry-bayonetta-performance-analysis-part-1 The PS3 runs in half the frames as the Xbox for this game! the video even shows the issue I am having. Damnit I hard reset my PS3. SirDrexl 01-08-10, 10:58 PM Yeah, that looks like v-sync. This game looks like it was developed specifically for the 360, and they didn't optimize the port to the PS3. It happens sometimes. The v-sync may have been a way of making this version playable. BTW, the v-sync on Lego Star Wars is at a strip at the top of the screen as well. Khymera 01-09-10, 08:11 PM Hi there, I'm completely stumped just trying to get my TV and PS3 to recognize each other's existence. I know the PS3 works--my brother recently had it hooked up to his TV, and had no problems with it. I've also tested my cables on his TV, and the cables are fine. I know the TV works--it's kind of old, but hasn't had any problems. I usually have it hooked up to a Motorola cable box from Time Warner Cable and a DVD player, and everything works fine. The TV has jacks for both AV and component cables. Usually, the DVD player is hooked up to the AV jacks, and the component jacks are unused. I have both AV and component cables for PS3. Neither one works. When I unplug the DVD player and plug the PS3 into the AV jacks...nothing registers. The PS3 turns on, the light goes green, but it's not communicating with the TV. On AV mode, the TV just says "No Signal." I do see a momentary white flicker at the bottom of the screen when I turn the PS3 on or off...but that's all. When I try connecting the PS3 with the component cables instead, exactly the same thing happens: nothing, except the tiny flicker on the screen when the PS3 is turned on or off. Can anyone tell me what's going on here? I know the PS3 works, I know the cables are good, I know that at least the AV jacks on the TV work, and everything else about the TV works too, so far as I know. Only...they don't seem to interface at all. I'm at a loss. I wonder if the cable box might be interfering somehow, but it doesn't seem like it could be--it's only connections to the TV are through a power cord and the cable pin cord. Does anyone have any idea what's going on and how I might get this working? I'm completely at a loss. Thanks in advance. |
