is anyone having problems with the ps3 and the 4095d?

there's no video there, SOLDIER.

Try this one.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/x56e7b

I'm certain it's a problem on the PS3's end, because a recent PC-to-LCD test with gradients showed no signs of banding. They don't show up during cable programing either.

Any success on Sony KF50XBR800 with HDMI-DVI cable?

I have the 4095D and not a single problem. Just make sure you select HDMI as your video source before you take out your AV or component cables. If you don't your TV will say NO SIGNAL, and you will have to plug the AV or component cables back in and then select HDMI. Other than that, it is totally bad a$$!!!

That's not correct.
I hooked mine up with the HDMI cable & the PS3 recognized that & asked if I wanted to output on HDMI in the setup screen.

Was that at the very begning of the initial setup? I did my initial setup with the AV cable and kept it that way. Then I got component and changed it, then I got the 4095D and only hooked up the HDMI. The TV could never find it (no signal) and the settings in the PS3 never changed. So then I had to do as I mentioned, rehook up the components and select HDMI in the video settings. What type of TV do you have?

Yes that was at the first of the inital setup.
I haven't even used the composite cable that came with it or the componet cable from my PS2, the HDMI is the only cable hooked up to it except for the optical output.
My TV is the Sony KDS-R70XBR2.

you can just hook the hdmi cable up and hold the power button for 5 seconds on the next power up... the ps3 should reset the settings and detect the hdmi cable

Westinghouse LVM-47W1 has the same handshaking problem as some other westy models. About 1/4 of the time, when the PS3 starts up or changes video mode or when the input is selected on the TV, everything works perfectly. But about 3/4 of the time, it doesn't handshake properly and the screen will enter an endless cycle of turning on and off. I've found that a temporary solution is to just switch away from the HDMI input and switch back -- repeat until it works. Turning the TV off and on, or unplugging and replugging the HDMI cable, can fix it too. Once it does initialize properly, it continues to work fine for hours.

This happens on all video modes, although I think it happens more on some modes than others.

I've tried two PS3s, two HDMI cables (different lengths), and two 47w1 TVs, so it's not a hardware or cabling problem.

When I talked to Westinghouse this past weekend they said they'd look into it.
When I talked to Sony they said they had never heard of such a problem.

I have just talked to Sony support about this problem with the PS3 and the LVM-37w3 and they said that they will send me a box to put the PS3 and ship it back to them and then I will get a new PS3 in 7 to 10 days.

Is this possibly a manufacturing issue that they have already identified?

I talked to the Westinghouse Tech support people and they said it was a PS3 issue. They said that the current work around was to use the HDMI to DVI cable and use one of the DVI inputs in the monitor. I have read on other postings that supposedly the issue even exist with DVI port 1 in the Westinghouse displays and that you should use only DVI 2 with the HDMI to DVI cable. However I cannot confirm this myself as I do not have a DVI cable.

Will they ship you a new PS3 right away then? Or you have to send it first and they will ship it to you as soon as they get it? How does it work? They also said in Westinghouse that I could use a HDMI-DVI cable but I don't have one! I said that I was going to buy one to test it but that I needed confirmation that this was indeed working. The guy in Westinghouse said that he could not confirm it because they do not support convertion.

No, they will not ship the PS3 right away. They will do the following:

1. Send me a box via UPS overnight and instructions on how to pack my PS3.
2. My PS3 will travel back to them via UPS overnight.
3. Once they receive my PS3 then I will have mine sent and this process should take 7 to 10 days (I assume it depends on hardware availability).

I told the lady that I did not want to send the PS3 during the holidays as I will have some free time to use it (finally!), and she said that once the box is sent to me, I have a month to send it back to them.

I have a Toshiba 72MX195. It hooked up well enough, though I initially was receiving some feedback to my receiver through the HDMI connection. I eventually fixed this through my receiver's settings, but not sure how. I also believe that the PS3 has to be turned on before my receiver for proper sync.

I've played PS1 and PS2 games, and they look good, though the sidebars remain, hope this gets fixed.

Resistance looks great (though not as good as Gears of War) and I believe it defaults to 720P if you have 720P and 1080i checked in the PS3's display settings. My TV upconverts to 1080P so I try to get 1080i output whenever possible.

Standard DVD looks horrid, 480p I guess; but Blu-Ray seems to look well enough, I've only played the 5th Element and I have read it is far from the best BluRay disc.

Quite happy with everything for now, but it seems there is a lot of room for firmware improvements.

okay guys (and gals),
here's my question about the ps3: do you think it will work with a ps2 vga cable connected to a epson powerlite s3 via its vga connection? the pj supports up to 1080i and the ps3 allows you to change display output via component. all resolutions excluding 1080p are supported. will this work, or will there be an issue because the pj component might not be rgb but rgbhv? how can i find out which the s3 has?... bare with me, i'm new to all this stuff and don't know if i'm saying it right. a sony csr told me that it may or may not support this setup (really helpful) so i thought i'd ask someone here; i just want to know if in theory it will work, since the ps2 vga cable i bought hasn't arrived yet. i hope that sony adds a firmware update that addresses this issue because the 360 does a good job of supporting vga output, in fact the picture thru the official microsoft vga cables on my pj is pretty good.

That's it! I'm gonna return the PS3, I don't want it if it's not going to work with my Westinghouse TV. I believe that the PS3 is not yet ready. They released many firmware updates in less than a month! So I will wait until my model (LVM-37w3) is working. Moreover, I know that there are many guys who didn't open it until this flickering problem with the HDMI connection is resolved!
I would like to know what the people from Sony will say when many of their customers start returning the PS3 because of this.

aaragon, I believe I may have discovered another thing with the PS3 and the Westinghouse monitors. The flickering apparently does not happen (and when it happens, it stabilizes after just 2 or 3 flickers) when the PS3 has been turned off for a while and is cool. After playing with it for a while and after it gets hot is when I start getting the non-stop flickering issues that I can only solve by turning the monitor off or changing inputs from the remote. Maybe this is an over-heating issue. My PS3 is in the open and gets fresh air, however it gets darn hot underneat the BD-ROM area on the right side. I can stand keeping my hand there, but it almost feels like it is too hot.

Could you confirm if your PS3 and Westi work fine (or has minimum flickering issues) while the PS3 is cold.

Well, it's too late now. I returned the PS3 yesterday. However, I wanted to make sure that the people from Sony knew why I was returning it. So I called them and I talked to a person for about 30 min and then to her supervisor. I don't know if it gonna make any difference. I just hope it does. My overall feeling is that the PS3 is not yet ready and that they have to do some more work on it. I guess I will be checking this forum until they fix the problem. I spent some bad days with this issue. I actually bought my TV thinking in the PS3 to obtain the full 1080p.
About the heating issue, I remember that the flickering was permanent even when I turned on the system for the first time (not hot at all). Maybe we have different versions of firmware for the TV? Mine is v1.0. I heard that they go up to v1.8 now but honestly I have no idea about what improvements the people from Westinghouse have made on it.

do you know for sure (100%) it's the ps3 and not your tv? alot of people that have my tv say they are having problems with the ps3 hooked up to there hitachi f59 tv's ( i have the 57f59) yet i have not had one single issue so far. hdmi is a tricky thing and i have had a few hiccups with my upconverting dvd player that i had hooked up to my hitachi every so often ( usually when i had watched 2 or 3 movie) to say it's all sony's fault is not total fair. i am not saying they shouldn't be on the problem trying to resolve it ,but i would say it's more of a 50/50 problem. i am sure everyone who has there ps3 hooked up to there tv's via hdmi will have some issues it comes with using hdmi and it has known handshake issues with everything from dvd player, tv's and receivers ect..

I have a slightly over year old (9/05) S-O-N-Y SXRD 60 tv that has not under any cirmumstances accepted any signal via hdmi on either of its hdmi inputs from this brand spankin new ps3. Tried updating system software, the turn off hold 5 sec routine etc etc. TV hdmi inputs work fine from other sources (sat box, dvd player) using the same cables (good quality) I try on the PS3. Stock composite cables with system work fine and the PS3 works fine via hdmi-DVI into a friends older panasonic for lord sake but not with their own damned tv-- I know I wouldn't get 1080p on this model (r60xbr1) but 720p & 1080i sources aren't too much to ask, especially since other sources can do it. Have spent 3 hours talking to tech support at sony (both PS3 guys and TV side too) and they are at a loss to explain it, each trying to blame the other. They offered the 'send it back on us' and have no machine for at least 10 days option but based on the fact that have changed every link of the chain independently with no result doesn't give me much hope of that solving things either. I asked the tech guys if it could be different hdmi versions causing problems but they dismissed that thought and doubt my friends oler panny had a newer hdmi version anyhow. Can't judge from this forum which way on that arguement.
Glad several people have had positive experiences as maybe I just have two kids who won't play nice with one another even thought sony is the parent for both. Any suggestions from you guys ? Thanks for helping.

I am looking to add a PS3 to my home theatre setup. I currently have a 360 and love it, but the PS3 seems awesome with the unique potential of the cell and BR playback. I was totally stoked until I started reading some of the nightmares people are encountering regarding resolution compatablity/scaling etc.

I have a Sony KDLXBR1 LCD that accepts 720p and 1080i. It then scales it internally to the native resolution of the TV (1366x768).

My only concern is if I will be able to play all the games and watch BR discs without a hitch?

I would really like as little conversion of the resoultion as possible. Does the latest firmware update affect that in my case?

Thanks for the suggestion thebigdaddye. Unfortunately I have tried setting, resetting etc on my own and with the sony help guys via phone with no success. I get NO SIGNAL at all -- compared to those getting flickering etc-- on the hdmi input (actually either of the 2 hdmi inputs) from ps3 but signal is fine from Dish HD sat box to both input with same cable. Seems to me for some reason the handshake between these 2 components (ps3 & tv) isn't working properly.
At this point I have gone the route suggested by some others and am using the PS2 component+audio from the AV output with perfect results. Peeves me that I had to buy another cable but at least I get an HD picture so end result is fine. On this TV the picture quality seems to be very very similar if not same on hdmi & component so not a compromise there. Be interesting to see if Sony releases a fix since hdmi seems to be a problem with several makes of TV based on people I've talked to in town and online.

just one more question? when you first set up your ps3 how did you have it hooked up? i ask because i don't think the ps3 will recognize what you have hooked upt it like say componet or composite. have you tried since you have it hooked up with componet to go in and switch to hdmi that way/ and have it ready on another input? thats how i did mine, because at first i had it hooked up via componet and then i wanted to switch to hdmi (if you switch to a different type then the screen will go blank until your go to the different input. problem is you have to switch it in the settings and i then had the hdmi already hooked up to the ps3 and tv the same time as componet. once i switched to hdmi in the ps3 settings i then pulled out the componet and the switched inputs on my tv that has hdmi. i know it sounds funny ,but thats how i did it and it worked great. other wise i don't think the ps3 knows what is hooked up to it like i said composite, componet or hdmi. i know it's a pain ,but i would give that a try. also make sure you have the hdmi in very good i know i had problems at first with either componet or hdmi connection on the back because i didn't have it in very good. try this if you want and let me know. i just can't see how it won't work on your sony tv.

thanks...this is what I currently get when I do that:

I have an HDMI-DVI cable attached to my monitor. I also have a crappy composite video cable attached to my monitor. My monitor has PIP in the upper right corner and after the 2nd beep I get a screen that says:

An available HDMI device was detected.
Do you want to output video and audio using HDMI?

When I choose: Yes

The screen goes blank on my monitor, what is interesting is that the monitor does not lose signal (power light is still green instead of orange). If I reset the PS3 again (without holding the power button) then again I get the composite signal broadcast into my PiP corner. I will try again without the AV cable connected to the PS3, only the HDMI and see if that works.

Does my monitor need to be HDCP compliant? (cause it is not), also have people been successful in connecting their monitors via an HDMI to DVI cable?

My tv is 1080 also. In games such as Call of Duty 3, it displays in 720p and 1080i. Currently, my tv is showing it in 720p. How can I make it 1080i?

Thanks
go into the display settings on the ps3 and unselect 720p and just leave 1080i selected and it will be in 1080i.

Sorry to hear that. Didn't Sony offer to replace your PS3 for a new one? I am sending mine back in January 2nd with the pre-paid shipping labels SONY sent me. If the next PS3 I receive does the same thing, then I will know for sure it is a PS3 problem. The Tech Support lady to whom I talked did not asked much, I told her about the flickering video and sound and then she just said she would send me a new one.

The Tech Support lady to whom I talked did not asked much, I told her about the flickering video and sound and then she just said she would send me a new one.

Well, they did offer me to send another PS3. However, since were not going to modify anything (not hardware modifications), I'm sure I was going to have the same problems. Please let me know if it went well with the new PS3 you will receive.

The only issue I have had with my ps3 is on my 72mx196 i have it and my dishnetwork plugged into the HDMI ports and the optical cable to my surround sound. And is it the tv or the hdmi on the ps3 that do not support dts? I run optical from ps3 to onkyo reciever and it picks it up just fine.

Hey folks,

I have the Sony 60 inch SXRD XBR (first Generation). I've had a PS3 hooked up with HDMI since day 1 (I've had the system since launch). I've had zero issues and great picture. Played plenty of Blu-Ray flicks, game demos, and Resident Evil 4.

I turned my PS3 on tonight and the console is flickering out of the blue for no reason. Tried all kinds of things and started looking for anybody with the same problems on here and it appears I'm not the only one.

Now, the PS3 currently is on top of my DVD player (Toshiba HD-A1). This has been like this for about 3 weeks now (I did a reset). I watched 1 movie on the HD-A1 before turning my PS3 on tonight.

My first thought was that the DVD player heated up and maybe this caused the issue. Somone on this thread mentioned heat. I can't say the PS3 was that warm at all. So I had figured this might not be the culprit of the issue but now I'm second guessing.

I will wait until morning when I know the PS3 is cooled down and try again. I'll post if I see any differences.

I can't believe I have to fight for a Component cable now for this thing. Unbelieveable.

I have one PS3 connected to a Acer AT3705 1080P LCD (via component as the HDMI only takes 480P/720P/1080i) mainly for games and a 2nd one connected via HDMI-DVI to a plasma for movies - that goes only to 1080i. 1080P via HDCP seems to be uncharted waters, and the cheaper monitors (like the ACER) have some trouble supporting it consistently.

The problem lies in my displays, one handles 1080P only via VGA and component, not via HDMI/HDCP, the 2nd did not have 1080P at all.

Other than that 1080P has to be component on the LCD, I've had no problems, and no HDMI Errors on the plasma either. In fact, even when switching inputs to the HD-A1, I can switch back to PS3 and the display synchs withing seconds, but I can't switch back to the HD-A1 if I switch to the PS3 - it gives me HDMI Error.

i have two 32inch LCDs

a Viore and a Phillips

i bought the Viore first for the PS3 and when connected trough HDMI it says that it has no signal, the i bought the Phillips and it did the same thing

could it be the cable a $19 Phillips HDMI cable or is my luck that bad?

and none of them are compatible?

is sending a HDMI cable from the PS3 to my receiver and then one out to the TV a viable option?

this i think is due to the HDCP in the PS# and it sucks

Has anyone been able to do this without issue? It IS nearly the same model as the "TH42PX500"...

* Turn on TV and set input to HDMI port being used.
* Make sure PS3 is connected via HDMI.
* Power on PS3 via power button and HOLD IT for 5 seconds (release after the second beep). It should automatically configure your PS3 to the TV's native resolution for all settings.

I have a slightly over year old (9/05) S-O-N-Y SXRD 60 tv that has not under any cirmumstances accepted any signal via hdmi on either of its hdmi inputs from this brand spankin new ps3.

VanWilder thanks for saving me the calls to Sony. Other posts left me with the impression that Sony is dumbfounded. I spent several hours over the past couple of days trying everything posted suggestion with no luck.

Additional details:

I tried two different HDMI cables: a $45 SONY HDMI cable that didn't have a PS3 label but from what I understood from research would work fine and then the $60 Sony PS3 branded HDMI cable. In both cases I got to a screen that said HDMI device detected, but on my TV's HDMI input all I had was a black screen. I tried several things before and after updating the PS3 firmware to 1.32. I'm either going to go out and get the component cables to get by for now or else take everything back. What a x-mas let down. Thanks Sony.

Just to add another data point:

Westinghouse LVM-37w1, service menu version1.05
Ps3 CECHB01 20gb
HDMI to DVI cable (tried 2 cables, same issues)

DVI port 1 :
More than 50% of the time, when switching to 1080p, the signal fails to sync correctly, resulting in a diagonally garbled image. Cant post urls yet, but if you go to flickr

/photos/56851613@N00/339298248/

This can occur when e.g. switching from a non-1080p game back to the XMB, or when testing the 1080p resolution from the Ps3 display settings. It seems to be totally random - I can go to the display settings, test many times in a row quickly, and get a few syncs and mostly non-syncs. But on the few times when the image syncs, it looks perfect, and will remain that way as long as the resolution doesnt change & I don't switch inputs.

DVI port 2 :
Will sync 1080p 100% of the time, even though the port is only rated at 1080i. The image is fine, except that a very particular shade of white shows up as blue instead:

/photos/56851613@N00/339298250/

(look at the blue sparklies in the 'ribbon' of the XMB). This is subtle, but obnoxious, especially when watching blu-ray movies - people's cheekbones, for instance, look like they have blue highlights on them. This problem does not occur in 1080i on port 2, or on port 1 when it has synced.

Westinghouse support refuses to accept a return on the item, even though the monitor is under warranty, and is blaming the problem on sony. Even if sony is having some kind of issues, there is very clearly something wrong with westinghouse's implementation of dvi and / or hdcp : one of the ports synchronizes correctly 100% of the time, and the other one doesn't.

This monitor is going back to best buy, and failing that, to small claims court. If anyone else has an interaction with westinghouse, and they claim to be unware of the problem, my support reference number is 361720

I've got a 50" Panny 9UK and bought the HDMI blade [TY-FB8HM] and am trying to get it to work properly with my PS3.

Here's my issue: When I set up the PS3's display options, I first try to let it "automatically" detect the optimal resolution and it can only find 480p. When I manually go in to configure it to work with 720p and 1080i, the screen goes blank and "No Signal" is displayed on my Panny. I have to wait 30 seconds for the PS3 to switch back to 480p and then it appears on my screen.

As such, the ONLY format I can get the PS3 to use with my Panny is 480p, which sucks.

Has anyone experienced the "480p" only issue using HDMI and found a workaround?

I would really like this to work with my HDMI interface since my component inputs are already being used.

thanks for the idea. I had seen another post suggesting that I only select 1080i in the ps3 manual display set up and not 720p. I tried this too and again got no signal and had to revert to 480p.

funny, I had initially bought the DVI blade and then exchanged it for the HDMI blade since most new components seem to be using this as the standard interface and not DVI. I think I wish I kept the DVI blade if you say it's working for you!

well i ended up buying an olevia lt37hvs. when i went to buy the panny plasma they had just sold the last one. so it was between the sharp and the olevia. i hooked the ps3 up to both of them and the olevia had a better response time then the sharp, so i ended up buying it for less a couple hundred less then the plasma.

after about 10 hours of game play, i can tell you i have not had any problems except for 1 loss of signal on hdmi that lasted for 2 seconds while playing resistance. other then that i have had no problems whatsoever with it and the picture is pretty good.

what i meant by the plasma not being good for gaming was the screen burn factor (Ive been known to play socom or gran turismo for 7-10 hours strait before, and we all know how bad those solid huds cab be), but the picture on the panny was better then the tv i ended up with, but I'm still happy with the purchase. :)

I just bought the PS3 yesterday and I'm having a heck of alot of problems with it already. First is the multiple disconnects from the wireless router. Had to use a cable to do system update to 1.32. That still didn't fix the disconnect issue.

But my biggest complaint is the fact that everytime I turn the PS3 on it losses some kind of sync (not sure if it's a HDCP issue or just a resolution/Hz issue). The screen is all squiggly lines and I have to pull out the HDMI cable from the PS3 and put it back in to resync it. Turning the TV on or off doesn't have any affect only pulling the cable. I have a DVDO ISCAN HD scaler feeding a Studio Experience 50hd front projector. when I connect the PS3 directly to the projector, everything works fine. When I connect the PS3 to the scaler I do not get a picture. I have set the scaler to passthrough on the DVI input. by using a Sencore video pro signal generator, I have verified that the scaler is allowing 1080i/720p signals to pass through correctly. I am using 1 hdmi/dvi adapter (although I don't think this is the source of my porblem). The only thing I can think of is that there is a problem with the HDCP going through the scaler (which is not HDCP complient, but is HDCP agnostic). Any body have any ideas?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Samsung DLP HLN617W via a HDMI cable with a DVI adapter at the set only shows a black screen.

I also tried a DVI cable to the PS3 with a adapter at that point and I get the same results.

My TV see's that it has a cable and a signal but the screen stays black. I have the PS3 set at 720P (Sammys native res) and nothing. tried two different cables and adapters. PS3 works fine on a Mits HD1000U projector via HDMI.

So my conclusion is there is a conversion problem. Sony says the PS3 supports DVI/HDMI. and Samsung says the TV is HDCP compliant. So what gives.

Is the PS3 in fact not able to support DVI/HDMI adapters?

OK I rolled out the adapters. I pluged them together like this PS3 to male HDMI to female DVI adapter then Male dvi to female HDMI adapter then 35"male to male HDMI cable to projector and no problems. I also talked with Monoprice tech and he tried a adapter set up and had no problems.

So my thoughts are back to Sony PS3 isn't allowing a DVI signal or My Samsung HLN isn't able to handle the PS3 signal (too new or something)

New update. Just got off the phone with Samsung, after the tech put me on hold for awhile he came back and said this is a known reported problem that they are working with Sony on finding a fix for. He didn't know how long naturally. I asked if this would be a firware update and he wasn't sure if it would be and or who's end it would come from.

So if your a DVI user and your set is getting a signal but no picture call and complain.

I have a 5 year warranty I wonder if that would cover this?

OK, Here's my case:

I have an HP MD5880n display. PS3 is connected directly to the display via HDMI. It goes through the initial handshake and everything seems good (at 1080p). So now, I fire up a game (or demo or whatever) from the XMB. It goes through the handshake process again (not sure if this is normal, if someone could confirm that would be great). Again, everything seems good. However, after a little bit of time (usually about 5-10 minutes but sometimes a little longer) on whatever it is I am displaying (game, demo, etc) it seems that the dispaly and the PS3 lose sync with one another momentarily. The screen goes bluish black (as if there is no input signal) for about 1-3 seconds and then resumes as normal without any assistance from me. After that, it seems that I can run indefinitely with no issue.

While it is not a huge thing, the momentary loss of signal is an annoyance and I assume it is not normal. Because of that, I'd like to find some sort of solution. However, my problem is that I am not sure if it is an issue with the display, the ps3 or the cable.

I've already tried the "hold the power button for 5 seconds" trick but the momentary black out still happens.

Anyone have any input in regards to this? I've read the entire thread here and don't see any remarks about this (although I do see two posters having issues with the HP's, i can't tell if their issue is the same as mine. Even if they are, I see no replies specific to those posts.).

I certainly hope the cable is the problem as that is much easier to rectify than if it is an issue with the display or the console.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Hey all something I want to check with all the other Westinghouse 37W3 people out there. I had a 20GB PS3 I received back Dec 4th, never could get a sync with HDMI cord, got it to sync HDMI-DVI with the flashing after resolution change and switching inputs would correct this. I recently got a hold of a 60GB(non talladega so I assume second production run?) and low and behold HDMI works with the same issues as HDMI-DVI on my 20GB(HDMI never synced on the 20 no matter what I tried). Anyone else try multiple PS3s??? I am gonna try HDMI-DVI when I get home on the 60 see if it acts the same as the HDMI or maybe is even better? The only Issue left unresolved for me, is DVD playback, the damn thing wont sync at 480P no matter what I try with any connection AARRRGGGHHH!!

I am running PS3 firmware 1.32 and I am trying to connect to my JVC 52G886 using many different hdmi cables. I've used 1.2 and two different 1.3 cables and on all of them my ps3 recognizes hdmi connectivity, so I try to run this display mode. Every time I select my ps3 to run hdmi connection my digital-in TV mode (hdmi mode) my screen flickers couple of splashes of green and turns black. The ps3 does talk to my TV but either the ps3 is belligerently rude or my TV is deaf. LOL. I've gone almost a day on the phone with JVC and Sony with no success. I've tried resetting my JVC using remote combo (sleep mode)+(video status)+(display), then selection number 2 and power down/restart to try and reset my hdmi TV settings. I've done every scenario you could imagine. I bought my ps3 for hdmi not component, but I have to use component just to get HD. Any help would be awesome, and thanks in advanced.

On my Mitsubishi WD-52628 1080p TV....I'm only getting 720P when I do my initial setup. Shouldn't it be 1080p??

Using a Monster Home Theater HDMI.

Thanks!!

Didn't see anyone answer you so I thought I could offer some answers as I have the 62628. The XX628 series does not accept a 1080P input on any of its inputs I'm afraid. It upconverts 720ip/1080i to 1080P on the fly. I personally run mine at 1080i but check 720p with the same source and see which looks best to you.

I do have a request for you, however. I can't seem to get the PS3 to sync the digital audio with my TV via HDMI and if you can give that a shot. I think I need to turn the PS3 on first but I haven't sat down and tried all the iterations yet.

Right now I use the optical audio out to my receiver for audio but I'm trying to simplify things for those in the house that refuse to use more that one remote and even then are only willing to use 3 buttons.

Here's my deal. I've got a 6 month old Samsung DLP TV (two HDMI ports) and just bought a PS3. The TV will not let you set the video input to anything unless it gets a signal. I plug in both an HDMI cord and the AV cords to the PS3/TV and try switch it over. When I tell the PS3 set video output to HDMI and the screen goes blank for 30 seconds, the TV still does not recognize anything and I cannot choose HDMI as an imput. Samsung has told us that this is a sony problem. Sony constomer service (who is extremely moronic) tells us that it is a cord issue. If it was the cord was defective, wouldn't the PS3 not allow that as an input?

Can anyone help me?

We bought this thing for HDMI and refuse to use component

I just got my monoprice HDMI cable $10 including shipping for a sturdy cable can't be beat!) and I can confirm that the Panasonic TH42PX50U works perfectly with the PS3 via HDMI.

I plugged the HDMI in, leaving the component plugged in, turned the TV and the PS3 on, set the PS3 output to HDMI and changed the TV input... that was it, it works great!

I was fairly worried after reading about CheapyD's issue with his TH42PX500, the European cousin of my TH42PX50U.

I played a movie, then a game, then a demo, all without turning the system off and the HDMI synced up fine, no dropped video or audio... no issues whatsoever, so far.

In fact, 720p looks quite a bit sharper via HDMI. My TV was in the first generation of Panasonic plasmas to accept 720p and it's quite a bit on the soft side when it interprets that resolution via component.

I'm stoked, now I can put the Wii back into the 2nd component input.

I have the BB 2 year service agreement on my Westy 37w1 and I've had it with all the problems this TV has. The flashing on startup and the loss of sync are making it impossible for anyone to view this TV except me. I know how to pull out and reconnect cable's, turn boxes on or off to reset and regain sync etc but try asking the in-laws or the Sig-other to figure it out. We can't watch TV unless I'm home and I'm outta town 4 days a week.

The service guys are coming out next week, hopefully they can fix the sync and flashing issues or take this crippled set outta my house.

As an update to my original post. I still cannot get the PS3 to output anything but 480p using the HDMI connection to my 50" Panny 9UK which is terribly disappointing.

I did go out and spend $24 on a PS2 Component Video cable and connected that to my Panny and - voila - got it to work in both 720p and 1080i. So I guess I'll just have to suck it up and use it this way for now!

Im hopeing the component cables are better. I ordered the Sonys, but they sure dont look like much from the pictures. I'll try them it cant be any worse than the composites. What is the best PS3 component cable? Monster?? The Pioneer in the shop is 1080i. Its not the greatest by any means, but on some HD Sat programs it looks pretty good. Right now going from the house to the shop playing the same game is a night and day difference. How much will the new cables give me??

IMHO, For a reasonably short lenght (under 10 feet) any cable will work just fine, so just use the Sony's you've ordered. Otherwise, any PS2 Component cable would work including the $20 ones mentioned a few posts back. You should be able to get 1080i resolution now, but it is all limited by what your Panny supports over Component inputs.

NOTE: A lot of the current games will NOT function at 1080i, so they will drop back to 480p which is only marginally better than the composite input (480i) you have now.

Well I've gotten my HDMI cable and everything is working perfectly for me. Played an actual PS3 game as well as a few demos and part of a BluRay movie and had no problems. The only little thing was that if you plug it into Video 6 it will keep saying that the audio input is unsupported, but in Video 7 it doesn't support audio input, so this solves that problem.

PS3 connected to Toshiba 34HFX84 via HDMI works fine

I have read through this entire thread, and have yet to understand something.

I have my PS3 connected via HDMI-HDMI (monoprice) on my 42" Westinghouse 1080p LCD. When I switch to a different signal on the PS3 (from the home menu to, say a BD movie) I get the crackling, staticy screen, etc. Lasts for about 5 seconds before settling down.

What is the solution for this?

Also, I get the sparkles while running 1080p. Quite annoying when I'm trying to enjoy the crystal clear 1080p picture. Also, when there is a dark scene, it is riddled with hundreds of blue dots....looks horrible.

None of these issues (handshake gyrations, sparkles) occur when running 1080i, only 1080p.

Would an HDMI-DVI cable fix these issues (HDMI audio isn't an issue, running optical audio). I sure hope the solution isn't to buy a different LCD. :(

Thanks for anyone who can help.

For the record. I have my 47" Westinghouse connected to the PS3 using a HDMI-DVI cable, connecting it to the DVI-2 slot and it works great with 1080p.

I tried component, but I was getting major ghosting when I turned on any resolution with progressive. I am not sure if this was the cable or my particular PS3 or what, but it was pretty bad.

The HDMI-HDMI connection had the infinite looping problem others have described, where the tv cycles on and off, trying to find sync. Unplugging the HDMI cable and plugging it back in worked, but only some of the time. Sometimes I had to keep unplugging it and plugging it back in several times before it would re-sync properly.

The strange thing was when I connected the HDMI-DVI cable. At first there were sparkles and even lines of only red, green, or blue lines. I was really worried at that point. However, after going away from the tv for 30 seconds and coming back, everything worked great on 1080p with no sparkles or lines and no ghosting at all. I don't know why letting it sit on for a while would have helped, but it fixed it. I only noticed the same problem the next time I turned on the PS3 but for only 5 seconds, then it stopped. Since then I haven't seen it at all.

PS. - When using the optical out, make sure the settings in the PS3 BD menu say bitstream for 5.1 surround to work. After changing that setting, turn the PS3 off and on and it should work.

I have a Sony CRT (KD-34XBR970) that I'm pretty sure does NOT support HDCP. Can I still play games in 1080i over HDMI? I know component will do it (that's how it's setup now), but from past experiences with my DVD play, HDMI will offer a better/more easily calibrated image. Everything just seems to 'pop' a little more over the digital connection.

I know I'm screwed on BD movies, but can I at least use that connection to play games?

PS3 Connected into an Onkyo TX-SR804 via HDMI. The 804 connected to a Mitsubishi 65732 65" 1080P television via HDMI.
Produces a horrible off and on flicker on the screen. The screen repeatedly goes black, sometimes for up to two seconds before coming back on. When the screen comes back after a long pause, it shows the "1080P Standard" text at the top, as if I had just selected that input.

When the picture is actually on, its fantastic.

When I connect the PS3 directly to the TV via HDMI, the picture is flawless, no flickering... but the audio out of the TV sounds like it is playing the Surround sound track only, no dialogue at all unless they are in a large room, and you can hear the echo effects.

Anybody have any idea when they will fix the firmware for the PS3?

Good call on the link. I've been keeping an eye on a fix for the cheap 1080p Westinghouse's, specifically the LVM-42W2 model. I just came across the article you pointed out and was going to post it here. From how the article makes it sound, HDMI issues between any TV in question and a PS3 are only at the TVs fault. The issue sounds like PS3s HDMI's HDCP authentication is the most up-to-date while some TVs may still have firmware with early out-dated copy-protection that isn't as strict. Since one requests a response from the other device at a faster rate, the two can never stay in sink...

Quote from article:
We spoke with Westinghouse monitor product manager Klaus Libor, who told us that our 37w3 set may well need an update to the firmware to correct the timing during HDCP authentication. “The PS3 expects a response that the TV is copy-protection ready in a certain amount of time,” Libor says. “And the response wasn’t coming quickly enough.”

What does everyone else think? Is this the universal culprit?

I am having the same issue with a different TV.

Question: I have gotten conflicting answers on this.

Does the PS3 require HDCP for games and DVDs? I am using a non HDCP DVI port.

that articles quote from the vp of marketing is Bulls***. I called today requesting this so called in house firmware update and was told that there wasn't one. I would have to send my lcd back to them so they can and I quote "swap a chip out". after reading every post in this thread I have decided to send my lvm42-2 back and get the samsung 40 inch lcd instead. thanks for all the westinghouse owners who provided info on thier experiences.

I called and they said they will be ready to set up in-home firmware updates within the next couple of weeks. However, the warranty says that in-home updates are only for tv's 47" and up. The CS rep I talked to didn't know all that, they had to call me back after our first conversation with updated information on the in-home updates.

Another update is that my DVI-2 to HDMI is not working perfectly. 95% of the time when I turn the PS3 on, it works correctly. 5% of the time those lines and sparkles I described in an earlier post don't go away for a while.

Yep, turns out the firmware update may not fix the HDMI problems as suggested earlier by Westinghouse.

Seems no one has rated the Sceptre X42 (or the essentially identical X37) with a PS3 yet ...

I bought an X42 Sceptre (1080P LCD) in March/April. I have the 'old' media box with a single HDMI input, that is switchable between HDMI, HDMI/HDCP and DVI (no overscan) modes for resolutions upto 1920x1080 (1080p)

I am running all my 5 HDMI/DVI source (One TiVo HD S3 DVR, one Moto Comcast 6412 DVR, Toshiba SDK860 upconverting DVD player, HT PC running Windows XP/7600GT and now my brand new PS3) through an 'old' (April 2006) monoPrice 5x1 HDMI switch.

OK, enough background ...
- PS3 menu, games, trailers that do not require HDCP negotiation work well ONLY in DVI mode with the Sceptre, and have pink/red splotches in HDMI/HDCP modes.
- BluRay movies work ONLY in HDCP/HDMI mode, and no splotches appear.

So, basically, I have to switch through input modes on the TV, but there is at least one flawless 1080p (source/display) mode on the TV for everything my PS3 spits out. I'm HAPPY :)

Maybe wrong thread but how do PS1 & PS2 games displayed when played through a PS3 hooked up via HDMI? Are the games stretched to fit the screen, displayed in 4:3, does it give you an option? I know about the 'jaggy' fix update released today and am ready to make the purchase, I just want to know how it will display on my plasma (since I avoid black bars).

I cant believe this crap, i wish i read this before i got the PS3. I love my Westinghouse LVM-37W3 and wont trade it for nothing else, my PC with SLI rocks in 1080P via HDMI and DVD's never looked better. The only real reason i got the PS3 was for the BlueRay but i think im going to sent the PS3 back and wait for a HD-DVD for my PC and play my PC games. I emailed both Westinghouse and Sony with this problem but im sure the response will suck.

FYI: I did the update on the PS3 to 1.50 but that did not help. I tried 3 High end cables and the DVI adapter with no luck. Constant blink. Only turning the tv on and off would fix this until i change the game or dvd.

VIZIO G47L

This is the new 1080 LCD that is 47 inches. It is at Costco for $1899 with a $250 off coupon starting on the 15th.

Does anybody have this TV? Does it work good with the PS3?

I dont know if this has been answered yet...

I have the Vizio GV47L 47" 1080P LCD and it works and looks great with the PS3. When you switch over to HDMI, there is about a 1-2 second delay (just a black screen) but thats pretty normal when switching modes on this TV. The delay has nothing to do with the PS3.

I've been playing Resistance online, downloading things such as the 300 Trailer in 1080p, watching movies and it all looks and works great! Its a great TV for the price. Hope that helps.

Right above your post there's some information on this. Sony and Westinghouse met yesterday to correct this problem. Expect a firmware fix in the near future. No worries.

And why would any one want HD-DVD, blah. Unless you want to replace a current format (DVD) with another format (HD-DVD) that's subject to being replaced shortly after it becomes mainstream (size limitations compared to BR). Blu-ray has longevity and now doesn't cost us anymore to support. Blu-ray is positive for the consumer, HD-DVD is positive for the suits.

Is it just me or do the ps3 games not look as sharp or detailed compared to the 360? I have it connected through hdmi and I just don't think there is any wow factor achieved like when the 360 came out. Are there any issues with hdmi that I may not know about? I haven't tried component cables. I understand that it is early for the ps3 to shine, but I am just wondering if I may have something wrong. The ps3 detected 1080i as the highest resolution, but my set is 720p natively so does that make any difference? I've only had the ps3 for a couple days so I am still trying to figure this out.

Assuming you're comparing the two with the same digital cables... I'd say it mostly has to do with comparing games released for the PS3 on day one to games released for the Xbox 360 a year into the systems life. Q4 2007 and beyond the PS3 will clearly set itself far apart from the 360. I think even during this Spring certain PS3 games will start to look better than most 360 games. Another reason may be the PS3s current scaling issues which would affect users with specific TVs. I don't know much about the scaling problem other than Sony recently announced they are addressing it and a fix is on the way for the near future.

BB service tech came out and he was 99.9% sure a new Digital board was not going to fix my black screen. I was willing to put money on it that it would (I trust my fellow AVS pals). The new board fixed the issue. :)

Funny thing is the tech was so sure it wasn't going to work he came with only the Digital board. apparently when upgrading the Digital board the analog board has to be changed at the same time, otherwise you get no sound. He came out with just the one part the other is on back order.

He was very happy it worked. Now he gets to go around and fix HLN sets when they wont display HDCP material.

(I'm a little surprised that I'm the first one to post this, but....)

PS3 to Qualia 006, no problems at all.

The "auto" setting correctly identifies that the set supports 480p, 720p, 1080i, and not 1080p via HDMI.

Sound works, too, although I only used that for a few minutes during initial setup. I normally use the TOSlink for sound output to my non-HDMI receiver.

Hello all,
A newbie here. Just a quick question, hopefully I'm in the right place. I recently purchased a Westinghouse 47" flat panel LCD (model LVM47w1) to go with my ps3. It appears that I can get a signal thru the AV port but receive no signal via hdmi. I also purchased a monoprice HDMI switch HDX-501 (5x1) to hookup other devices thru the only hdmi port on the lcd. I have read in other forums that the ps3 will only work thru hdmi input port 5 on the switch. Regardless, it doesn't work straight to the lcd's hdmi or the switch's (on ANY port). Is there anyone here aware of this issue that can shed some light. I'm at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

All, today I called Westinghouse customer service and they said they are aware of the problem but have no answers for me. I was told to send the lcd back to their corporate office in California for a fix. HA HA thats verrry funny. Their problem is I have an in-house warranty and my time is free. $25 for small claims court with a complaint to FTC and Consumer Affairs. I know, I know...stand in line, but to those who are thinking about purchasing ANYTHING Westinghouse, remember this posting as you will have no one to blame but yourself.

1) STAY AWAY FROM WESTINGHOUSE BECAUSE THEY CONTINUE TO MARKET PRODUCTS WITH KNOWN PROBLEMS THAT COULD BE FIXED PRIOR TO SELLING THEM TO THE CONSUMER.

Umm, I'm seeing these two big wavy lines when I'm on the XMB screen. Anyone else having this problem? ;P

Okay, now a serious query. I have the Samsung LN-S4095 1080P LCD, hooked up via HDMI.

When I set the "auto" display on set-up, the set shows white snow that flashes, and doesn't stop.

I can get it back to defaults, and choose "No"

Then when I go to Display on XMB, I click all the outputs, and the flashing comes back.

If I do not check 1080P, I'm fine.

I was of the belief the Sammy would take the 1080P signal.

Any advice?

From what I've seen here, it's possible the the set's native is 1080P, but won't take 1080P. Whats' up with that? Does the set scale 1080i to 1080P?

Thank you.

The shimmering and flickering isn't as noticeable when something is moving on the screen, like a game or movie.

But once the screen is filled with static images that's when you'll notice the problems. Is this a PS3 problem.. or is this my TV?

what makes you think there's no end in sight? sony and westinghouse met together a few days ago to hammer out a solution (prediction: it will be rolled into one of the ps3 firmware updates). in the meantime, why not 1) use component. you'll still get 1080p for games, and when the blu-ray movies drop to 1080i the monitor will deinterlace it anyway, or 2) use an hdmi to dvi cable and connect the ps3 to the dvi2 input on the westy? either way, the problem is solved...to return it is silly...

Just picked this up at Costco for retail price. I didn't have a coupon unfortunately, but this is what I paid for my stupid (with the PS3) Westinghouse 37W1 19 months ago. It successfully handles the PS3 mode changes flawlessly. I have every resolution set and the Vizio correctly displays the input format each time it switches resolution. I still need to test DVDs and BluRay Discs, but I'm confident that they'll work nicely.

I'll likely never buy another Westinghouse HD set, even though the 37W1 works great with everything I've tossed at it besides the PS3 (component DVD players, Scientific Atlanta 8300HD, Apple Macbook at full 1080p, etc). This one thing is enough to sour me on what was supposed to be a relatively futureproof display. Its disappointing, no matter where the issue is - Westinghouse or Sony.

I have spent alot of time looking at the difference between HDMI and Component hookups between my PS3 and Samsung DLP 1080P TV. The Component looks better, period. The black back ground in the menu looks dark grey with HDMI and pure black with component, and watching blu-ray movies there is no visible difference in most cases, but at times the component looks cleaner. Spend 30 minutes or so and give it a quick try yourselves. Hook both up and check back and forth. Its not hard to do and you will be surprised at what you actually SEE with your own eyes.

HDMI is somewhat overhyped. Everyone thinks is MUST be better since it is digital, when in fact component cables are perfectly capable of handling 1080P signals (PS3 outputs 1080P via either).

I also have digital cable (Scientific Atlanta 8030HD), and the HDMI looks bad overall compared to the component. While HD sources look about the same, the lower res channels look horrible via HDMI. So far I see no advantage to HDMI at all.

Most custom high end A/V shops do installations with component NOT HDMI. There are tons of articles on the web that support what I said if you do a search for HDMI vs Component.

One last parting thought, in response to BIGREG above, there is no such thing as futureproof. What we thought might be futureproof in 2004 was not in 2005, what we thought was futureproof in 2005 was obsolete last year, what we THINK is futureproof now will be once again replaced later this year, and so on. How many times must we all live through this cycle before we all relaize the futility of searching for "futureproof" technology? It doesnt exist no matter how much you spend. DVI was the big thing when it came out, but was short lived. Then HDMI was the big futureproof golden cow when it appeared, until HDMI 1.1 vs 1.2 and now 1.3.... 1.4 next year maybe?

Hey Guys! I just registered to this site. I picked up my PS3 on Friday, and am normally just running it through a flat screen crt Sanyo 36", but I figured I would try the old 720P component video on my Magnavox 26MD255V in the bedroom. It looks freaking great! But, I get these really subtle lines of like a purplish color and greenish color. I asked someone about it, and they said it sounds like a refresh rate issue. Any help here would be greatly appreciated, cause I'd like to get the most out of this system. Also, I'm sorry if I am posting in the wrong thread, or if this has already been answered.

Thanks!

And its not a $$ facor either. I will spend whatever it takes to get the best picture and audio quality I can. Which is why I was going to jump on the HDMI wagon initially because I beleived all the BS. But there is no substitute for your own eyes. What you SEE is what counts. And what I (and others) see is a better overall solution with component video.

Google "Component vs HDMI", you will find some very helpful and interesting reading by a number of independant sources.

I have no doubt that eventually some version of HDMI or a next generation cable will go beyond component. But until then, I'm in the component camp.

Any thoughts on using older generic ps2 components, versus new nice thick ones with gold ends designed for PS3?

The design is the same, so thats not an issue. But a better quality cable will be better, considering they are usually 10 or 12 feet long, a cable with good shielding will be less likely to pick up interference.

I have a problem with my PS3 (it's hooked up to Samsung 32" flat screen through HDMI) where the game sometimes loads up with sound but no video. I usually just have to exit out and start it again and it'll work but does anyone know why that happens? It doesn't appear to be broken as the game normally does load correctly but I figured to ask. It appears to be something with adjusting the resolution of the games depending on what they accept (720p, 1080i?)

I have your TV's little brother the 37" I too got those weird splotches/crawl in HDMI/HDCP, it seemed to get better with firmware updates to the PS3 but still had some dot crawl and color depth problems in that mode. When I lie to it and put it in DVI mode all the problems go away, colors are richer, no crawl, and my Blu-Ray discs still work fine, but there is one caveat, PS2 games get shifted to the right cutting off almost an inch on that side-have to switch to HDMI/HDCP to get them centered-PS3 stuff plays fine.

I am now worried to death that my tv will have issues with the PS3. Even though Sony demo'ed the PS3 with the tv that I have, it still means nothing to me until real people post up real info. If you have your PS3 hooked up via HDMI please post your results here. I am looking for a Sony xbr2 (46 inch version if that matters at all) that has tried this. Thanks for any info guys and gals.

Sony
xbr2 60 inches-Displays image fine when it is available but losses image randomly. Blackouts happen and then the image reappears.
xbr2 46 inch-No issues at all, syncs right up.
xbr1 50 inch-only displays at 720p (this could be because this set doesnt support 1080p, more research neeed)
xrd 60 and 50 inches-Randomly loses signal like the 60" Sony xbr2

Samsung
BD-P1000-steady flickering image
other display "sparkly" noise images with 1080p resolution but seems fine with 720p.
4696D-reports no signal found via hdmi sometimes and other times it works great.
HL-S5087W-no issues with hmdi

Panasonic
TH42PX500-Randomly loses signal like the 60" Sony xbr2

Westinghouse
LVM-47w1-Randomly loses signal like the 60" Sony xbr2
42w2-flashing screen and signal loss but works fine via hmdi-dvi
37w3-flashing screen and no signal, turn off the tv and turn it back on and it seems to work.

JVC
JVC HD-61FN97-seems to work fine with everything except 480p via hdmi

How about adding a section to your original post for HDMI switching AVR's that folks determine will or will not work with the PlayStation3???

I need to buy another AVR, but it would be nice to at least be able to check-off the PS3 compatibility issue......... It seems every AVR I review with HDMI switching seems to have "issues" of one sort or another........ boy do I hate Hollywood Lawyers!

Well guys, as of a few days ago I am no longer a part of this thread. BB called and said the shop was unable to fix the Flashing/scrambled picture when connected to HDCP content and that my TV was being sent to BUYOUT. Whatever that is. It came back to my house and I took it back to BestBuy and traded it in for a Sony 40V2500 XBR Bravia set. No flashing, No HDCP scramble so far on the new set. Best of luck to you guys. I hope Westinghouse issues a firmware upgrade soon to fix this issue. It was a capable TV at a reasonable price.

For some bizarre reason the first year and a half of 1080p production TV's and projectors were not able to accept a 1080p input...

Seems strange, but that was the situation. If your panel is native 1080p and the signal is 1080i you should not see any difference as long as the de-interlacer in your TV does it's job properly.

No "fixed panel" display (DLP, LCD, LCOS, etc) can actually display an interlaced signal. Only raster-based or CRT based technology can display an interlaced signal. So your display is already de-interlacing the signal and if you have a 1080p set, that is what you are going to see. If you have a set that is native to 720p (1280x720 or the weird 1366x768) then the set will first de-interlace the signal and then scale it to 720p for display.

Early 1080p DLP units found an interesting way to become 1080p... they really only had 1 million mirrors instead of the two million mirrors that is required for 1080p, but they found that in addition to tilting them up and down to turn them on or off... they could also tilt them left and right (they call this wobulation) and with software they could "pretend" that they had two million mirrors. I have no personal experience with wobulation, but the reports I have read say it works amazingly well.......

Well, you just made me open up my 2407 and hook it to the PS3. I've got a revision A03 and I'm currently looking at "telledega nights" playing on the 2407 via hdmi->dvi-D.

Hard to tell if it's 1080p with this monitor though from what I was seeing... it's the right resolution.. just can't tell if it's interlaced or not from the menu options....

Did you ever find out if the PS3 hooked up to the Dell 2407 displays in full 1080p? I was also told when I originally purchased this monitor that it supports HDCP.

But sony 46" v2500 (v-series bravia) works 100% ok with ps3 connected straight to tv via hdmi cable.

I have an issue with my TV. I have a HP 37" Flat-Panel LCD HDTV. The model number is LC3760N. I have my PS3 hooked up to it via HDMI. I noticed while playing games that there is a considerable amount of blurring whenever there is movement on the screen. I've been told that that's an issue if your TV has a bad refresh rate. This TV's refresh rate is said to be 6m/s, so could it be a problem with my HDMI cable, or should I have HP fix it?

I believe you can adjust the screen horizontally and vertically with your plasma. I remember seeing a post about this for your tv. You have to push the arrow buttons on your remote up/down-side/side. You might have to be in a settings menu also but I am not sure.

Check your owners manual on this -it definitely should be in there.

Just got a PS3 and am also the owner of a Sony 50" A2000. I have the PS3 connected to the television via a monoprice HDMI cable for video. The picture in 1080P is astounding! I'm using an optical cable to connect the PS3 to my older Pioneer receiver until HDMI receivers come down a bit.

The only problem I'm running into is my television gives me an "Unsupported Audio" popup whenever I put a DVD in. It only lasts for a few seconds however.

Same setup here(just a different receiver). I don't get the "Unsupported Audio" message though.

I have found some great news, I recently purchased the Denon AVR-887 receiver to add to my LVM-47W1 / PS3 combination. At first I was hesitant to hook up an HDMI cable out from the Denon to the Westy, so I went the HDMI-DVI route. This left me with the "sparkles" issue. So, I was left with using an HDMI cable out of the Denon into the HDMI in the Westy. What I have found is that the Denon's HDCP timing cycle fixes the handshaking problem that we have all experienced from the PS3 out to Westy in (when you hook the PS3 into the Denon and pass it through to the Westy). I have tested it over 100 times and NO PROBLEMS!!! I found the Denon at a very reasonable price online and it is a level-6 receiver and is future proof as long as Sony releases the ability to decode DTS-HD in the PS3. Enjoy and Cheers!!

Here's some more data:

I have a Sony KDS-50A2000 SXRD display. The PS3 will sync up at 1080p via HDMI. However, there are intermittent, random video dropouts (the screen will go black for a second or less, then come back). This will happen a couple times a day, not very often. I don't have HDMI audio capability via my receiver so I don't know if the sounds cuts out as well.

The dropouts will also happen at 1080i. They will happen in the XMB, in a game (the Gran Turismo HD demo @ 1080p and GT4 @ 1080i), or during a Blu-Ray movie. I haven't seen them at 480p (GT4) or 720p (Resistance).

I've tried different HDMI cables, running both direct to the TV and through a Monoprice 5x1 HDMI switch (into port 5). Dropouts still happen with any configuration. I have also replaced the PS3 with no effect.

I also have a Dish 622 and a Denon 2910 DVD player both running HDMI @ 1080i into the same display with no issues (with the Dish box running through the Monoprice and the Denon connected direct).

I've just changed the PS3 to use component. It will not sync at 1080p, so I've set it to 1080i. I'll let you know if the problem remains.

I've only tried two Blu-Ray discs -- "Talladega Nights" gave me that message several times, while "The Departed" only did it upon returning to the menu from the deleted scenes reel.

I've noticed that those messages get a lot less frequent if I set the HDMI audio to "bitstream" instead of "PCM". That might have something to do with it.

Just wanted to pipe in that I've had absolutely zero issues with HDMI from my PS3, 60" XBR1 SXRD, or my Denon 4306. Hey guys, i just recently purchased a 60 gig PS3 with an HDMI cable. My TV is a 32" Samsung LCD model number LN-S3241D.

This is the first time i have used a HMDI slot on this TV. The component cables i got from Gamespot work fine with the PS3 but HDMI is giving me some concerns. My problem is every time i load a game i get this loud cracking sound followed by either the TV losing its connection for a split second or the snow/fuzz effect with a screen flicker. After its done loading i get crystal clear picture and sound with no problems. On this one rare occasion though i got sound but no picture but that was easily fixed.

Can this damage my TV or the PS3?

My Denon 4306 takes the PS3's HDMI signal and automaticly switches to the Multi Channel Input. Though this is not the ideal way to watch movies, it is the only way to get digital sound from Resistance Fall of Man, since optical wont pass the sound from this game. It does sound great though. It's just a pain to switch the menus (PS3 and 4306) to switch to optical so the Denon can use its processors. Man I wish my Denon had v1.3.........

PS3 doesn't accept optical multi-channel audio when using HDMI? That has me worried, as I just got done dropping alot of clams on one today, and I'm waiting for it to be delivered. My receiver is a Yamaha RX-V2500, and doesn't accept HDMI - but my TV does. Does this mean if I use HDMI for the video, that no audio will run though the fiber optic Toslink out??? This has me worried sick... The most expensive console I've ever purchased...

YOu can set HDMI video and optical for audio output. That's what I was doing before I got my Denon 4306.

I was also able to get sound from Resistance: FoM, too. I'm not quite sure what he's talking about, though, since I prefer the 7.1 LPCM from my PS3 to my Denon. HDMI 1.3 is not necessary at all.

You took a huge worry off of my shoulders! I'm glad to hear that it will work with both connected. Soo, I gather from what you are saying that I can only run 7.1 LPCM though HDMI 1.3, correct? And only 5.1 channel audio through optical (as I've heard).

My recever accepts 7.1 channel sound, and can even up-convert to 9.1 using presence speakers - I'm not sure if PS3 supports 7.1 on Toslink though... My TV is a KD-34XBR960, with HDMI 1.1, and an optical audio pass-through - but I don't know if running to the TV via HDMI, and to my receiver via optical from the TV, will still allow for 7.1 audio or not.

No problem. I believe the best you'll get out of TOSlink is 6.1 (Dolby -EX and DTS-ES), which I can directly confirm I got with PS3 set to bitstream to my old Sony AVR.

I can definitely confirm that R:FoM audio works fine via optical. No problem.

The difference is that optical cannot pass *uncompressed* PCM multichannel soundtracks. It can pass DD and DTS bitstreams with no problem. It will downconvert PCM multichannel to stereo, as far as I know.

(The only Blu-Ray disc I am aware of that includes a PCM 5.1 track with no DD or DTS 5.1 also available is the Sopranos box.)

I just got a PS3, and I can't get the HDMI to work. I want to figure out if it's the PE7700 projector or the PS3. I've tried two different HDMI cables, and neither work. I know the HDMI input works on the projector, because I can get a picture directly from my HDTiVo. I'm not using a switcher (yet).

When I hook up the PS3 via HDMI, the projector sees a 525p signal, but displays nothing. This is after holding down the powerbutton for 5 seconds to turn it on (with only the HDMI cable attached) so the PS3 does its autoconfig thing. I can't navigate the windows to setup the HDMI (like to try to enable 720 or 1080i once I turn it on, because I can't see anything.

Any ideas? Also crossposted in PE7700 thread.

I just got the PS3 as well and am having some problems.

I have a Samsung LN-S4695D 46" and connecting it via HDMI. I get a "looking for connection/lost connection" screens from my TV when a bluray or game is loading or between transitions. Also while watching bluray I get white flickers every moment or so. I've updated the ps3 and not sure what else to do.

Also, when I view a regular dvd/game it displays the whole screen however when I'm watching a blu-ray movie there are black bars on top and bottom even though I have a widescreen. Is there a way to make it full screen or is that just how it is?

Lastly, wheres a good place to get HDMI cables? (im using my cable box one right now). I heard all HDMI cable quality are the same and dont need those $100+ dollar ones?

To set up the PS3 to a HDMI output it states that I most go into the display setting of the PS3 and set the output to 790p,1080p etc.. But when I go into the display settings all it shows me is 480p. Is there some firmware i need to download to enable my PS3 to have these higher settings. By the way even when i pick 480p nothing is displayed on the screen only gray flickering.
Anyone have any ideas?

With the TV on and HDMI connected, power on the PS3 by pressing and holding the PS3's power button for over 5 seconds. You'll hear a beep and it'll test resolutions & negotiate a better noe (hopefully)

Also post your TV model/specs

And the possibilities happen to be, for future reference - 480i/p, 720p and 1080i/p

Does your projector have component inputs? You can try ps2 component cables... they are cheap..... and use them to connect the ps3 to the projector to see if you get a signal. Maybe there is a conflict with the hdmi 1.3 on the ps3 and the hdmi input of your projector?

I have a PS3 hooked up to a Pioneer Elite Pro-FHD1 plasma via HDMI with an Integra receiver. I have watched a handful of Blu-ray movies using this setup. My monitor has been professionally calibrated and I wasn't able to see a difference in quality going direct to the monitor compared to through the receiver so at this point I've opted to avoid an extra connection for audio and am just using the HDMI (audio bitstream uncompressed). When watching movies the output is 1080p so I can't comment on problems people might be seeing at 720p.

I have noticed pauses in playback on some discs which can last for a few seconds, sort of like the old layer change delays you might expect on some DVDs. The strange part is that if I rewind and play over the same section the delay doesn't occur again which leads me to believe it might be an HDMI handshaking issue. I have not had any occurances of total signal loss or flickering. I have seen one or two HDMI lockup issues coming from my Comcast (Motorola) DVR box over HDMI, but have never seen the same thing from the PS3.

I don't know of any PS3 games that are working at 1080p yet, they all seem to be 720p or 480p when running older PS2 or PS1 games.

I would like to add that there is no point is spending big bucks on HDMI cables either. I suggest going to a site like Amazon and do a search for HDMI cable. I've tried a variety of cables with my high-end setup and the 6 ft. cables from Cables Unlimited for $3.65 (yes $3.65) are just as good as the $300 ones the video store tried to sell me. The pro ISF calibrator (THX 2 certified) in my area agreed. Save your bucks for content or other components in your system. Depending on your receiver, you might want to go direct to your display and/or use a separate optical/coax cable for audio (you can get those digital audio cables cheap too).

Note to LVM-42w2 owners.

I called today about the HDMI/HDCP handshake issue, there is still no fix.

My Viewsonic 32" HDTV N3260W (LCD with HDCP) will not handshake properly with the PS3 via HDMI. The N3260W just displays 'No Signal'. Tried all of the PS3 system configs and clean boot solutions posted around the net, none work. It just gets no signal at all. My PS3 works with via HDMI on other TV's using the same cable. The Tv is currently running firmware 2.06p. Will be seeking a fix for this or a refund on this crippled TV.

I got my PS3 yesterday - and HDMI works perfect with my Sony KD-34XBR960. Runs in 480P-1080i perfectly with amazing fidelity, and no handshake issues at all. I just have to make sure the TV is powered on before the system initially, so that they do the propper "handshake" - after that, any time I turn the TV off and back on while the PS3 is still running, the picture comes right back on.

Only problem I have, is that the black level is MUCH higher than I had calibrated it to using my PC with HDMI - I don't know if it's the PS3, or not.

I'm using BlueJeansCable.com (the ONLY place I buy my cables from) HDMI cables - just in case anyone was wondering.

Thanks for all the help on the HDMI and audio issues - I really appreciate it.

I have a Sharp 37' 43U model. HDMI works fine except when I connect the optical cable. The screen flickers and goes nuts when playing a PS3 game. This only happens when you connect video via HDMI and audio via optical. The only time it works correctly is when I watch a blu-ray movie. This issue only seems to happen to Sharp T.V's . BEWARE.. beside that it works fine.

I just got my PS3 here in the UK and although the HDMI cable works fine on my Sharp 46 Aquos at 1080p there are issues with the PS3 using HDMI.

Blu-ray movies and games are fine but anything running from the hard disk or the main menu causes the blacks to be dark grey and not black at all. Watching trailers at night with the lights dimmed makes the picture look slightly washed out because of this although as I said, Blu-ray movies and Blu-ray games have a perfect black level. Therefore, it must be a fault with the PS3 when not running Blu-ray or DVD discs. It also seems to be a problem with HDMI as it's fine through composite (although i'd never use composite!).

The easiest way to check the black level is to press the PS button on the controller and check how dark the screen is. It's dark grey when on the main menu, watching a film from the HDD or looking at pics on the HDD, even playing game demos from the HDD. Doing the same thing during a blu-ray movie or blu-ray game shows a perfect black level.

Can someone else running HDMI from PS3 check this out?

Not on my HDTV - black levels are as good as my TV (Sceptre X42 1080P - made from a ChiMeiOpto panel) can support. From all sources - HD videos, HD demo/games, browser, BR games, BR movies.

Are you SURE you aren't confusing the 'monthly XMB background tint/color' for a BG grey level? (although that wouldn't affetc demos & movies)

Its either a Sharp TV problem, or you have a faulty PS3. Shclep it to an electronics store and plug it in to eliminate possibilities!

How can it possibly be a TV problem!? It's not like the TV is making changes to the signal just for HDD content as it woudn't know.

It's the difference between black and dark grey so not obvious on certain screens and needs to be checked with the lights dimmed to see it. I sat about 2ft from the screen to test this and the black levels are definitely dark grey. If you play a trailer from the HDD and pause it on a black screen you can see that it's not black. It's maybe more obvious on my screen as it has banding problems that show up on grey screens but not black screens.

I'll test it out on another screen on Saturday but it's possible it may be a UK PS3 problem only or the v1.6 update has the bug? I suppose i'll have to take some pictures to prove what's happening.

I've done some more testing and it seems to affect the 1080p resolution only. 1080i, 720p and lower resolutions all work fine with a perfect black level. Therefore, for someone else to check this, they will need a 1080p TV.

This must be a bug on the PS3 since 1080p on Blu-ray and games is absolutely fine (thankfully) and neither the TV or cable can change the black level specifically for HDD content!

I also have a sharp I have to see if my blacks are washed out on DVD movies. I how one the other day and it looked fine. Have you tried to turn on the black level enhancement on your Sharp T.V. The only problem I have is the problem with the optical cable while using HDMI for video

Well on the US PS3 with a Samsung 1080p TV via HDMI, the black levels for a Bluray movie and its downloaded trailer counterpart, are the same. Pitch black. Games and the XMB all look very good and as dark as could be.

I dont know if its a PAL issue, or maybe just your individual PS3/TV combo.

It could easily be a UK PS3 problem then especially since it's got different hardware inside (or lack of hardware!). Are you running firmware 1.6? I really cannot see this being a TV problem since Blu-ray is fine and I have every enhancement setting on my TV switched off. Therefore the TV won't artificially mess with the contrast at any time, not that it would mess with a completely grey or black screen anyway. I can't see how the signal the TV is receiving would change from the PS3 for movies and HDD content. It must be the PS3 that's changing the blacks to dark grey.

I know someone who has my TV (UK version) and a US PS3 so he can check if his PS3 works. This should help narrow down the cause of the problem to a specific PS3 model at least. I can also try a friend's UK PS3 on my TV to see if that has the same issues as mine. I wont be able to test a US PS3 on my TV though unfortunately but if you say it works fine on a Samsung 1080p screen then it's gotta be the PS3 model. I do know someone who lives nearby with a Samsung 1080p screen so if all else fails, I may be able to try it out on his screen.
