Splamone 03-29-07, 06:37 PM The 1080p HDMI issue is a fault! This is reported under this link also:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=788813&highlight=washed+out+HDMI
Basically the PS3 sends out an incorrect black level for the RGB colourspace through HDMI at 1080p which makes everything much brighter than it should be and needs to be fixed. Changing the HDMI colourspace to RGB on the BD/DVD settings makes the black level too high on Blu-ray also but unfortunately games still use the component colourspace so the black level is correct. I can't therefore adjust the TV once for all area of the system.
The only choice is to wait for a fix and put up with it in the meantime or change the resolution to 1080i. I think i'll stick with 1080p and wait for a fix.
It may be that some 1080p screens only accept the RGB colourspace which is why everything looks ok? Unfortunately it's not possible for me to change these settings on my TV.
GVLSandlapper 03-31-07, 12:05 AM Hey everyone.
My brother-in-law just hooked his PS3 via HDMI to his Samsung LN-S3241D and it works great except when a game first starts. It has static for a few seconds and makes a loud crackling noise. From what I've been able to read its an issue with it changing resolutions and its a problem with the TV, not the PS3. Anyone else have this and been able to resolve the issue?

I wasn't aware that there were any consumer displays that are designed to handle RGB color space via HDMI inputs? I was under the impression that those with VGA ports should handle it correctly. Perhaps my pj handles both RGB & YUV color space over HDMI & I don't see the problem.
*I have my PS3 set to output only YPbPr levels & my black levels are equal to my other consumer video gear.
*PC's (HTPC) output video in RGB mode which is a different range from YPbPr.
I run a 25 foot/26 gauge HDMI cable from MonoPrice (pid# 2841) to my Panny AX100U projector with no issues at 1080p/60.
I would give the nod to the HDMI connectivity over component as I get slightly better edge detail and shadow detail via HDMI in my config; although I do get a 1 second blank screen when changing source resolutions that's not present with component.
Regards.

I have a Sharp 37' 43U model. HDMI works fine except when I connect the optical cable. The screen flickers and goes nuts when playing a PS3 game. This only happens when you connect video via HDMI and audio via optical. The only time it works correctly is when I watch a blu-ray movie. This issue only seems to happen to Sharp T.V's . BEWARE.. beside that it works fine.I had the same problem with my Aquos 32D43U. After reading your post I removed my optical cable from my PS3 hooked it up to my optical out on my TV and ran the audio feed from my PS3 to my TV through my HDMI cable and it worked like a charm, no more screen flickers!
Note to LVM-42w2 owners.
I called today about the HDMI/HDCP handshake issue, there is still no fix.
According to people at HardForums in the Westinghouse 37w3 thread, there is now a 1.81 firmware for the 37 that fixes the HDMI handshaking problem with the PS3. Of course I only have v1.80 :(

That seems to be the only way you get it to work. The down side is that running the optical cable through the TV will not enable Dolby Digital sound. I only get sound from my 2 front speakers unless i adjust the receiver settings to use all speakers. It's a quick fix, but its not Dolby Digital. I just leave the optical connected to the PS3 and use it only when I watch a movie. That way i at least have Dolby Digital when i watch a movie. When i play a game I plug the optical to the t.v
Does your optical not work sometimes when you plug it to your tv? Some times that happens to me and I have to re-set the resolution to 720p and back to 1080i on the PS3 in order to get it to work again ...very strange.

I didn't even notice that as I just tried it for a couple of minutes yesterday but you are correct. Oh well I might as well just plug the Optical back into my PS3 since I rarely if ever play video games.

My wife won both the PS3 and the Sharp from an online contest so while I'm a little annoyed with this situation I'm not as pissed as I would be if we had shelled out good money for the PS3 (not that I would spend $600 on one in the first place)
andydumi 04-02-07, 12:09 PM The optical issues stem from the fact that the TV cannot pass dolby digital to the receiver through its own optical.
I am not sure if there are any tvs out there that will pass what it receives directly. The only situation in which they pass 5.1 DD is when they receive it via OTA HD or QAM tuner... Usually the TV decodes DD received, and outputs it stereo to its own speakers or passes that stereo signal to the receiver through optical.
So to get DD out of PS3 you need to connect Optical to the receiver directly, not optical to TV, then optical to receiver.

I wish it would send out the dolby digital signal out of the TV, since it have a HDMI cable connrected to the T.V you would think that tv would read the audio signal and out put dolby digital. Oh well i least my movies sounds good. LOL

Im pretty pissed off my self since i spent $1075 on the TV and $500 on the PS3. I try not to think about it just bothers me more. :(
Donnie Drunko 04-02-07, 11:35 PM Hi first post here in the forums. Been reading them for sometime.
The question I have is pretty simple but I seem to get different answers from sales clerks. I was told the ps3 really could only play Blue Ray movies in 1080i and not at 1080p. Some sales clerk said it was in the PS3 manual as only supporting 1080i and 1080p was a myth used to sell more units.
I have heard from others that it does indeed play blue ray movies at 1080p as long as your Tv is 1080p and using HDMI.
So if anyone could answer this for me I would owe you a debt of kindness.
As a side note I do not own a Ps3 or 1080p tv but plan on getting them very soon. I am mostly a movie junkie but was hoping the ps3 would make a nice Blue Ray player for the time being. The tv I was thinking of getting is the SAmmy 4665 or 4661 using the ps3 via the HDMI to hopefully achieve a 1080p picture. Any suggestions or comments on this would also be great.
Thanks and I hope this was not off topic. Still learning my way around the boards.

The sales guy is wrong (what a surprise!!)
The PS3 will play 1080p thru HDMI & Component also I believe.
willmgordon 04-03-07, 11:23 AM It will not play 1080P through component, only Games, NO BLURAY AT 1080P by COMPONENT.
blkdog7 04-03-07, 12:09 PM I have the Westinghouse LVM-37w1 and it works PERFECT using the PS3's HDMI out to the Westy's DVI-2 input. NOTE: DVI-1 will not work at all with the PS3. And, DVI-2 is the one that supports 1080p inputs, not DVI-1. Anyway... I have one of those HDMI/DVI cables ($5.00 on ebay!) and I have zero complaints. Gran Turismo HD looks amazing at 1080p.
I get none of the flickering that my friend gets with his W3 over HDMI. So, try out the DVI-2 port if you have a Westy and want 1080p.

I hate salesmen they dont know jack..... PS3 will do 1080p only with HDMI. You need to have a 1080p tv. If you get a normal LCD the highest resolution will be 1080i which is still very clear.

so clear that you won't see a difference unless you have a very large screen.
Cam Man 04-04-07, 03:49 PM We have a strange problem that only appears when playing Resistance FOM (and others to a lesser extent). It is a "layer" of flashing blue squares of different sizes when the game is underway. It almost looks intentional it is so "organized." When the color fades when closing out the game, the squares also lose their color but remain visible until the game closes.
BD playback is flawless. Any ideas?
tiduspr 04-09-07, 07:01 PM Bought a new Samsung 5265f and a PS3. The very first day I used it got handshaking problems. When gaming, the screen will go black for a couple of seconds before getting the image back. but other times, it gets worse..i get the No HDMI signal message , some white static and then it just starts blinking between the black screen with no hdmi signal and the white static screen.
some people have suggested using the official ps3 hdmi cables. but im already using Sony hdmi cable that came with my hd dvd player..so im not so sure about shelling out money that's unnecessary to spend..
i see couple of people here with the same or similar problem...
what i dont understand is: is this a TV or a PS3 issue?
any ideas?

From everything I've been able to find, it's an issue with some Samsung TV's. My brother-in-law is having the same issues so I was helping him out by trying to find a solution. He ended up just going with component cables instead because they don't cause this issue.

Did you try rehooking the ps3 up to the samsung. Unplug the hdmi cable from the Samsung and ps3...Plug back in...turn on tv 1st...then turn on ps3 and go thru automatic setup? I would be doing this a number of times if I had your issues.
jason2k 04-09-07, 10:54 PM Hi all,
I brought home my brand new PS3 today and hooked it up to my Sony 34XBR960.
Over component, I got some really nasty results...I've posted a video here:
http://www.loonyblog.net/2007/04/09/how-i-almost-entered-the-next-generation/
Over HDMI I got absolutely nothing.
Has anyone else seen this problem? I'm assuming I have a busted console, but I figured I'd check here and see if I'm alone in this.
Thanks in advance...
Davegdc78 04-10-07, 12:49 PM Hi all first of all i'm glad to be a part of the forums now. I'm brand new here and look forward to being a part of the community. My question is in regards to the KDL-40XBR2 TV that i just recently purchased. I notice that read in all advertisements for this tv that it's supposed to in some way be able to take High Def and even Standard Def signals and upconvert them to 1080p. Now i have a Playstation 3 connected to the TV and i am currently using it to view Blu-Ray's as well as Standared DVD's but no matter what i do I cannot get the TV to display the way it's advertised basically i'm trying to get a higher resolution than 480p out of my DVD's and it's not working. If anyone can please explain this to me it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance
I also posted this same inquiry in the sticky designated for this particular TV model but i'm also posting here since it's also in relation to using a PS3. thanks again guys :)
Kingram 04-10-07, 12:54 PM The Ps3 will not upscale standard DVD's so you will always just get 480P
unless there is a update someday that will fix that.
But your getting 1080p thru HDMI with your Blu-Rays right?

That is correct i was just told by another guy in the forum for the tv that i own and was told that this particular model internally upscales everything into 1080p but apparently it doesn't really make anything look any better as far as Standard DVD, PS2, or even PS1 is concerned. but yes i am getting full 1080p out of my Blu-Ray's
davy1shoe 04-10-07, 06:25 PM I cant get my Ps3 to run via the above set up.
I have a Samsung 850 hd upscaler which works no problem but even when i swich from a working dvd player cable into the Ps3 it sort of lights up the blue dobly light then says pcm.
Having 2 hmdi inputs on my VSX- AX2AV amp im wanting to use both but im having to pull out the hmdi cable from my amp to my PDP-506PE tv and put the Ps3 in and it works great but i have only 1 hmdi input on tv so its a pain in the neck.
Any help would be most wellcome
Hi I browsed through this thread briefly. Sorry if this has been covered but are there any issues with the PS3 and the Sony 40" 1080p LCD HDTV (KDL-40V2500)?
I'm thinking of buying that TV pretty soon but want to make sure it works perfectly with the ps3.
I will have the ps3 hooked up directly to the TV via HDMI and sound via digital optical to my 5.1 receiver.
I own a Vizio VX37L 37" LCD HD set and no issues at all with my PS3 connected by HDMI. This TV is definetly a sleeper, great picture quality and at a very resonable price.

I have a problem with my Playstation 3 outputting 720p. I currently have my PS3 hooked up to the HDMI port on my Sharp Aquos LC-32DA5U with this (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10240&cs_id=1024002&p_id=2283&seq=1&format=2&style=)

When displaying 1080i, the picture and text is sharp and clear. But when displaying 720p, the picture and text is very jaggy. Whether playing a game, demo, or on the XMB, there are jagged lines around everything and overall the picture does not appear to be very sharp. I also own an Xbox 360, which I have hooked up through component, and everything is very clear and smooth in either 720p or 1080i.
Anyone ever had a similar issue or an idea of what may be wrong? Thank you for your input.

yellowhandman 04-15-07, 01:01 PM My PS3 is connected to my Denon 2807 via component video, as my plasma TV is pre-HDMI. However, I'm trying to send the audio via HDMI, so that I can pass LPCM from the PS3 to the Denon.
I've tried all sorts of setting. Denon definitely set to receive audio via HDMI, and tried both bitstream and PCM output settings on the PS3, but no audio seems to be coming into the Denon from the PS3.
Any tips/suggestions?

Sandness,
Well the t.v works great except for that one issue. You can watch movies on your PS3 with dolby digital without a problem. It just the games that have the problem. I hate not being able to play games with surround sound, but i've gotten used to it. Its a great t.v but that issue dose bug me from time to time. The t.v has very deep blacks and the pictures look great. Resistance looks awesome no issues at all as far as the picture goes. If you get a HDMI audio receiver you'll avoid the screen flicker problem. I got my T.V for $1075 and $195 for a 5 year warranty ...i hope this helps

Here in my country i will get it a lot more expensive, like $1500 dollars, but is a good price if we compare it with the sony's and samsung's tv's, and i like a lot the image, but definitely i want dolby surround and dts whit my video games, so this is a big issue, i don't know if get it or no.
Jiffylush 04-17-07, 10:57 PM I just setup my new Sony DG810 and it has eliminated my HDMI/HDCP issues with the PS3 and my Westinghouse LVM-42W2.
Audio over HDMI is working with both my TiVo S3 and the PS3.
I now am only using HDMI connections between the devices and everything works.
im confused and lost now
first I heard there was going to be a patch now i heard different
been researching this handshaking issue alot on forums
is there likely going to be a patch or a fix for handshaking in a ps3 update?

I called Westinghouse and they were 'working on the issue with Sony' of course there was no timetable.
I contacted the writer of the article that officially reported the problem, she has not been able to get an official responce from westinghouse or sony on the hdmi/hdcp issue.
I decided to try a new sony receiver (dg810) as an intermediate device and it is working.
mcclayton 04-18-07, 06:26 PM I have a question. Will a Philip's HDMI cable work with my PS3 (go to walmart dot com; its the only one under Philip's under the cheapest price you can select)? By the way, I have a Sharp Aquos LC-xxD6U.
ashutoshsm 04-18-07, 06:29 PM All HDMI cables are equal.
And without looking at the site/cable you're talking about, I'd suggest you check monoprice or bluejeanscable (both linked in the banners above!) for their great cables, prices & service :)
i heard the 1.7 patch is reducing or elimination handshaking
???
andydumi 04-19-07, 09:43 AM It cant eliminate handshaking that would remove DHCP. Maybe improve its compatibility by giving more flexible timings...
bobzdar 04-23-07, 01:42 PM I don't know if it's been posted or relevant, but my optoma HD70 projector (720p native, hdcp compliant) works in both 720p and 1080p via hdmi with no issues.

Edit - using monoprice HDMI cables. Also outputted 1080P when running through the monoprice 4 port HDMI switch without issue.

And without looking at the site/cable you're talking about, I'd suggest you check monoprice or bluejeanscable (both linked in the banners above!) for their great cables, prices & service :)
This is not necessarily true, there are different specs for cables when it comes to 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc...
ashutoshsm 04-23-07, 05:11 PM True - but with the near-absolute lack of 1.3-capable display.passthrough devices (though soruces exist - the PS3 being one) and the vast majority of issues with sub-1.2 sources being their rushed/cruddy HDMI negotiation implementation (think Samsung, Toshiba, panasonic TVs), what I said was generically accurate ;)
i just got a samsung lcd 4665f model ...and when i hook up the ps3 to the 3rd hdmi on the side of the tv ...when its displayed at 1080p it will start blinking after a few minutes ...white flashes ..but when i lower it to 720p i dont have that problem...and the funny thing is that when i switch it over to the other 2 hdmi on the back of that tv i dont have a problem with it at all ...anyone else haveing this problem ..and if so have you called anyone about it ..thanks
Neo_Reloaded 05-07-07, 12:42 PM I have my PS3 hooked up via HDMI to my Samsung LNS3251D LCD. Every couple of minutes, I get a staticy click or two through the speakers. I don't notice this with any other inputs into my TV, but I also don't have any other HDMI devices to test. Is this a known issue with the PS3 or my TV when hooked up via HDMI?

John Haghighi 05-19-07, 04:00 PM I just had my HDMI board replaced in a Pioneer Elite 84 to fix 1080P output with the XA2. Now when I turn on the PS3, in the Menu, set at 1080P the picture is flickering every 3-5 seconds, connecting it straight to the display, I have no problem. I also have no flickering when playing a Blu-ray movie! Just games!
The only way I can get it stop flickering is to set it to 1080i then it stops. The other way to stop it is to set it to 1080P and plug it directly into the SXRD TV...no problems at all.
So this is an entirely new HDMI board in the Pioneer Elite 84, had no issues before it was replaced, and now I have this flickering picture when playing games at 1080P going through the AVR?
I've read numerous posts about possible grounding issues, problems with Onkyo receivers, Westinghouse displays, etc...but nothing seems to explain what is going on here?
If it was an HDCP handshake issue, I would think it would be a problem with Blu-ray movies as well, also I would think it would not matter if the resolution was set to 1080i....
Anyone have some additional insight to this problem?
Hazard71 05-22-07, 10:21 AM I have a Sony KV-34HS420 tv and I was wondering if thier is a upscaler in this model. I would like to buy a PS3 down the road but my tv is 1080i native and I have heard that means the PS3 will downscale 720p games to 480p.
Please someone must have one of these older HDTVs.
Conan450 05-22-07, 03:13 PM I am now worried to death that my tv will have issues with the PS3. Even though Sony demo'ed the PS3 with the tv that I have, it still means nothing to me until real people post up real info. If you have your PS3 hooked up via HDMI please post your results here. I am looking for a Sony xbr2 (46 inch version if that matters at all) that has tried this. Thanks for any info guys and gals.
Sony
xbr2 60 inches-Displays image fine when it is available but losses image randomly. Blackouts happen and then the image reappears.
xbr2 46 inch-No issues at all, syncs right up.
xbr1 50 inch-only displays at 720p (this could be because this set doesnt support 1080p, more research neeed)
xrd 60 and 50 inches-Randomly loses signal like the 60" Sony xbr2
Samsung
BD-P1000-steady flickering image
other display "sparkly" noise images with 1080p resolution but seems fine with 720p.
4696D-reports no signal found via hdmi sometimes and other times it works great.
HL-S5087W-no issues with hmdi
Panasonic
TH42PX500-Randomly loses signal like the 60" Sony xbr2
Westinghouse
LVM-47w1-Randomly loses signal like the 60" Sony xbr2
42w2-flashing screen and signal loss but works fine via hmdi-dvi
37w3-flashing screen and no signal, turn off the tv and turn it back on and it seems to work.
JVC
JVC HD-61FN97-seems to work fine with everything except 480p via hdmi
Ive got a 60 inch sxrd and a 50 inch, neither one has ever had an issue with ps3 and both use hdmi
Dixie Flatline 05-23-07, 02:07 PM Ive got a 60 inch sxrd and a 50 inch, neither one has ever had an issue with ps3 and both use hdmi
Are those XBR1 or XBR2 sets? I'm thinking about a PS3 with the KDS-R60XBR1 (no 1080p input), so I'm curious.
Thanks!

Splamone 05-24-07, 12:47 PM Under firmware version 1.80, the PS3's HDMI Full Range (HDMI) setting resets to Limited every time you reset the system even though it says it's set to 'Full'! Damn this is frustrating as I thought they might have fixed this issue! Also, this setting is set to 'Limited' in games regardless so if you use the PS3 PS1/2 game scaler (or should we call that a slight zoom mode since it's not really scaling it at all!). :(
On the plus side, the scaler on DVDs seems to do a pretty decent job at least of removing jaggies.
Edit:
It looks like the new setting is not 'read in' when the system boots so the XMB is washed out but it sets it correctly when playing a PS3 game so it's not such a big deal. Still a pain for me and my Sharp TV though! I've logged a call with Playstation support.

I have a 60XBR1 and it's flawless with my PS3 (going through my Denon 4306). I was initially quite fearful of HDMI issues but have been pleasantly surprised by completely smooth sailing.

Now, everything plays just as well as over component. The DVD scaling is the bomb.

Al Shing, I just sent you a PM. I have the same TV and still have problems with HDCP after the 1.8 update.
Extra Zero 05-26-07, 12:46 PM Hey guys, I've had my Sharp for a couple weeks now and had been lurking numerous boards trying to uncover a fix. While Firmware 1.8 didn't fix my HDCP issue I think I have isolated the problem. You see, it doesn't matter whether or not you have an optical cable plugged into the PS3, if you have your audio set to optical, then you're going to have HDCP issues no matter what.
I figured out how to get 5.1 in games and it's really simple. Run the HDMI cable from your PS3 to HDMI Input 5, with an optical cable to your receiver or switch box. After that's done, go into the PS3's menu and manually set your picture, next set your audio to HDMI and go to manually adjust it. Now you'll find why you haven't been getting 5.1 in games... When your run HDMI to your TV, the PS3 automatically disables 5.1! Just manually set your audio and enable 5.1, DTS and AAC! You should be good!
One important thing to consider is to not enable everything in the manual audio settings. For some reason, if you do, you will run into more HDCP problems, but just enabling the basics for 5.1 works perfectly. This really is 5.1, pop in a THX labeled DVD and run the sound test if you don't believe it! Please, let me know if it works for you fellow Aquos owners!
Hi Guys. I have a DVI input only on the back of my display (2nd gen DLP) and I have a Male-Male DVI cable available. Is this the correct part I need to connect an HDMI device (such as a PS3 or other HDMI device)?

Thanks for your help
portopotee 05-29-07, 12:20 AM I have the exact same Sharp TV and have been having this problem for the longest time...I'll try that tomorrow, and see if it fixes it. Quick question though: Should I only select DTS and AAC? and Not DD ?
aznkiller908 05-30-07, 04:33 AM 1.8 fixed the HDMI problem for my Westinghouse 37w3
So I took the plunge and bought it. I also bought a monster MALE HDMI - Female DVI adapter for my DLP (has DVI only).......It works fine, but I am seeing little white specs randomly all over the screen, almost like in the movies........This hapens on DVD and Games......Is it the DVI cable I am using, the adapter, my display, the PS3 or a setting? Help please!
edit: oddly this seems to come and go. After the PS has been on for a bit I don't really see it. Its very minor anyway, so I might just forget about. Just curious if anyone else has seen something like this.
tut1971 06-02-07, 05:38 PM I am getting no video thru my PS3 when I use the HDMI output. I have tried hooking up the HDMI thru both my receiver (DENON AVR-987) and thru my TV (Mitsubishi WD-Y65) with no luck. I receive the audio signal but nothing on the video end. I don't have components for the PS3 as of yet and so am stuck running with the standard composite that the system came with. I am using the MONSTER PS3 HDMI link and I know that the cable is not the problem as I switched it out with another I had and had the same problem. I am thinking maybe it's a problem with the HDMI port on the PS3. Any help?
Ward216 06-03-07, 12:58 AM I am getting no video thru my PS3 when I use the HDMI output.
Have you tried this? (PS3 directly connected to your TV)
1)TV on with HDMI input selected.
2) Power on the PS3 by holding the front panel power 'button' until you hear a second beep.
OR,
Using composite video, change the PS3 Video Settings to HDMI and then quickly switch TV inputs to see if the HDMI input is working.

Ward
eddy_winds 06-03-07, 06:17 PM Ok here we go...picked up my PS3 this morning from gamestop. I too was worried about my CRT RPTV (about 3 yrs old), cuz it was native 1080i, but it does have an internal scaler and DVI/HDCP. Hooked up through DVI, PS3 recognized my max res at 720p, so Resistance and NHL worked fine for the brief period i played it. So i am relieved i guess. BTW my tv is Toshiba 46HX83 Cinema Series. Looks like im lucky i guess.
Toshiba 65H83 Works Great
1080i is Np

I have a problem with my Playstation 3 outputting 720p. I currently have my PS3 hooked up to the HDMI port on my Sharp Aquos LC-32DA5U with this (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10240&cs_id=1024002&p_id=2283&seq=1&format=2&style=)
cable.
Kevin
Here's a quick update. I purchased a component cable for the PS3 and have none of the issues stated above. Everything is clear at either 720p or 1080i. I also purchased another HDMI cable and experienced the same grainy results and multiple green lines running down the screen. I'm still confused as to what exactly is wrong. This is currently the only HDTV I have available, so I cannot test the system on another one. I'll try to post pics of the problem later if anyone is interested.
portopotee 06-08-07, 09:34 PM Thats a great fix (its what I did to fix my flickering problems with my Sharp) but the problem is, you need an HDMI cable to get upscaling of DVDs...
racerecchs 06-12-07, 02:38 PM I've searched and didn't find anything precisely like this so forgive me if I'm repeating a question:
I have a Sharp 46 Aquos with my PS3 going into it via hdmi as well as my Fios settop box. Neither hdmi port will recieve audio from the ps3 and I've tried numerous cables. BOTH hdmi ports work fine with every other component I have. I.e. the problem is not a bad hdmi cable or bad hdmi port. The problem persists in either port when only the ps3 is plugged in so it is not a case of audio from another source efectively blocking the audio from the hdmi.
My problem:
my picture is fine, but I cannot get ps3 audio to pass through my aquos to my receiver using hdmi from ps3 to aquos and optical from aquos to receiver. FYI, my receiver has only one optical input which is being utilized quite nicely by passing the other components via my aquos. so running directly from my ps3 to my receiver is not an option, nor should it, I'm sure we all agree, need to be.
My Q: is it a misstep in one of my settings or hardware incompatibility and if it IS hardware, has anyone attempted to use a Big Chains warranty to try to repair it, or have it's firmware upgraded?
thanks

Is the audio from your other HDMI source being converted by your TV and sent out via optical toslink?
Frankly I have never heard of a TV stripping the audio signal from the HDMI and sending it out over Optical.... not saying it does not happen... just I have never heard of it!

How do you have the audio output set in the PS3 menu? If it's set to optical, it won't send it via HDMI. FYI--I'm pretty sure that the PS3 will only send 2-channel via HDMI into a non-HDMI 1.3 spec set, though. So, even if you get it working, you won't get surround.
Someone please correct me if I'm incorrect.

I don't know if you are right or wrong.
But I will say - if you are right - SONY would be as DUMB
as NAILS. No one needs HDMI 1.3 to deliver multi-channel

So I am assuming you are mistaken. I'm 100 miles away,
on vacation, from my PS3 and AVR to check one way or another.
racerecchs 06-15-07, 10:04 AM my solution to my post above is to use a optical to digi coax converter. My receiver has an open digital coax, you see. So I will advise if it works.

fordpickup 06-17-07, 08:50 AM I've got my PS3 routed through an Onkyo SR-804 to a Panasonic projector via HDMI. I've noticed the infamous blink has gotten worse with the 1.80 and 1.81 updates. Has anyone else noticed this? It makes starting games difficult to say the least.

I had this problem, and then I realized I was setting it up wrong under PS3 display settings. Been so long I don't remember the answer, but I think you have to choose component for display under AV Multi-out, and it's not immediately obvious when you're setting it up.

HDMI Blinking or Handshaking issues with 1.82-
Ive noticed that some people are still having problems with this
with the new update, i must say theyve been cut down quite a bit, I use to get them during blu ray scene changes sometiems, during game play when pausing or even whe na loading scene occurs,
Now I only get them when im entering an app such as a game or blu ray (whic his normal i suppose) and ive only got it once during a blu ray movie in which i paused and then fast forward and pressed pause again. then the blink happened. So all in all, seems like sony is trying to cut it through, i think a couple of updates and we'll only see a handshake change when changing an app.
woofwoofarfarf 07-01-07, 05:51 PM Any one have problems with playing BD movies after 1.82?
I have my PS3 connected though a Onkyo SR674 and to a Samsung LNS4695DX LCD all via HDMI.
I've had no problems whatsoever with playing BD movies or games until I updated to 1.82.
Now when i try to play any BD movie, I get a HDMI signal lost but can hear the sound just fine. I tried several different discs and different HDMI cables and even connected the PS3 directly to the TV and has the same result. The interesting thing is that playing PS3 games or even just regular DVDs on the PS3 is just fine. ONly problem is there is no video when playing BDs.
Anyone having the same problems?
Since the most recent updates, I've been experiencing the quick 2-5 seconds of audio/video dropout. I've had my PS3 connected to my 60XBR2 through my Denon 2807 via HMDI since launch day. I've had no problems until the last few firmware updates.
Is anyone else still having this problem, and are there any workarounds?

Not sure if this will work for you, but it did for me.
It just so happened that the 1.82 firmware update came installed at the same time as a heat wave in my area. The room that my PS3 is in does not cool down very well with the heat generated from the 58" plasma and the PS3 combined. I experienced the same motion issues after 1.82 and, one time, the PS3 just froze up on me. I touched the PS3 after it froze up and I could have fried an egg on it...it was so hot!
So I purchased an intercooler for the PS3 to more readily disperse the heat.
I haven't had any trouble with BD since. Just a thought.
Cooling shouldn't be a problem for me: the area is completely ventilated.
Unfortunately, I have this problem with everything: BD, DVD, games as well as PSN arcade games.
Sandwedg 07-05-07, 12:29 PM Does anybody have any insight as to HDMI handshake loss to a panasonic pt-ae700u projector?
I have about a 17' hmdi cable, installed in-ceiling to the pj mount. a neighbor brought over his ps3 a few weeks ago and we could not get it to handshake at all on the in-ceiling cable (but it would on a shorter 5' cable) I pulled out the longer cable and pulled it back in - it was pretty twisted around the component cables that it shares conduit space with. we tried it again yesterday and could get it to play games but could not get into the ps3 main menu. If we exited the game, the handshake was gone and it would not re-connect put a game back in, it would connect to the game intro.
Anybody have similar problem or experience? I am planning on getting a ps3 so we were beta-testing it on my system, now I'm a bit worried.
Thanks in advance!
andydumi 07-05-07, 12:32 PM Maybe get a higher quality long cable. There may be signal loss due to the length and its causing issues. Since it worked fine with a short/diferent cable i would say its clearly a cable issue.
Sandwedg 07-05-07, 02:31 PM Well, that's what I thought too, which is why I pulled it out, which led to finding it was all twisted up. I tried it again (not in the conduit) and it worked better than it ever had (I was experiencing random drop outs using the DVD player, so I have been using component cables).
The part I don't understand is HDMI (or 1's and 0's) is supposed to work or not, but not in-between. So why would the game work fine, but the console menu not?
I'm new to this forum and would like to know if the current PS3's have HDMI 1.3 (couldn't seem to find an answer in this forum).
If it does, does it fully support both the audio and video benefits (supposed) offered by HDMI 1.3?

yes and yes, but only the 60 gig model.
the 20 gig comes with 1.2

I believe both have 1.3a capabilities.
avaserfi 07-10-07, 10:21 AM Tried searching but couldn't find anything so here it goes.
I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to deal with this problem. Right now I have the ps3 running HDMI (audio/video) to my receiver (Denon 3806) then the receiver has an HDMI cable running to my TV (Sharp LC-42D72U). Every once and a while, mainly during games but sometimes Blu-ray, I will have a flicker on my screen where the HDMI handshake has failed. This only seems to happen when displaying 1080p not 720p.
I was wondering if anyone had run into a similar problem and managed to find a fix or if someone has read about one. I have tried a few things but nothing seems to work.
All my HDMI cables are from bluejeans. Also, this never happens with my Oppo which also uses hdmi.

I am also experiencing HDMI flicker / drop outs. My ps3 is hooked up directly to a Westinghouse TX-47F430S. I've also seen flicker with my SA 8300 cable box and DVD player, though the ps3 is more frequent. I've seen the cable box and dvd player flicker 2-3 times in the last month while the ps3 has flickered roughly a dozen times and get less use. Unfortunately, I haven't found a solution. At first I thought the ps3 was to blame but since then I've seen the same thing happen with the cable box and dvd player so lately I've been blaming the TV. There doesn't seem to be any way to reproduce the drop outs... I'm using 24 and 28 guage HDMI cables from Monoprice. I've also had flicker during Motorstorm which runs in 720p so mine is not limited to 1080p...

yeesh, the misinformation is crazy. The hardware on the ps3 (all of them) is HDMI 1.3 compliant. The firmware is not entirely 1.3 compliant and does not have all the optional specs including DTS-HD-MA bitstreaming capability.
What does this really mean? not a whole lot since HDMI 1.3's main new feature is "Deep Color" which does not have any specs for either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray.
So, if the audio is going to be PCM 7.1 or Dolby TrueHD, you can have HDMI 1.1 send that over today. If it's about video, if you can send 1080p/24 and 1080p/60, what else do you need?
If you wanted HDMI 1.3, you will require all the components to be 1.3 compliant, specifically the display, AVR, and source.
Personal recommendation is to not worry about 1.3 and get what is available today. Futureproofing requires a lot of cash with not a lot of futureproofing.

monkeychucker 07-11-07, 11:06 PM Can someone please tell me if the ps3 can output 480i over hdmi. From what I have been able to gather earlier firmware did not allow this. I am hoping that maybe some of the updated versions do or will. I am hoping to use the scalar on my projector for sd dvds as it is supposed tp be better than the ps3s.

No, it can't. However, unless your projector has the Reon chip, it's not going to be better than the PS3.

it's funny, i distinctly remember reading in a side by side comparison before the PS3 launch that the 20 gig model wouldn't have 1.3 like the 60 gig model.
now i can't find that anywhere.

i don't understand why you would want to use HDMI for a 480i source anyway, monkeychucker.
hell, even s-video would look better, in my opinion.

Thanks for the answer. The projector I am getting does have the Reon chip and I am told 480i is the best format to feed it as it is unprocessed.
DesertKnight 07-12-07, 07:38 PM I have a quick question I'm sure anyone in here can answer. I am currently in Iraq and will be home in roughly 2 weeks. I have the PS3 still in the box at my house waiting on me (bought in december while on r&r so I didnt get the price cut or the free movies AHHHH!) Anyway, I also have a Directv hd box there with a Sony DAVFC7 Dream System surround system. I will have the Sony sxrd 60a2020 there by the time I make it home, but it isnt there now.
The question is how do I hook all of this junk up??? I am new to the HD world, with this being my first step in any of it. The tv has 2 hdmi inputs, so it would be easy enough to just connect the ps3 and hd receiver that way, but then I wouldnt be getting surround. That is the part I am having trouble figuring out. I would assume I could hook up the ps3 to the tv with the hdmi, then run an optical cable from the ps3 to the ss receiver. That sounds easy enough.
Maybe this isnt the thread for this part of it, but I will give it a shot here anyway. How do I hook up the Directv HD through the SS without losing the HD quality??
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated and sorry for maybe not explaining my situation the best way possible.
fordpickup 07-12-07, 10:48 PM I just got off the phone with the SCEA helpline regarding the flickering problem. I mentioned my PS3 is connected HDMI to a Panasonic PT-AE900U projector through the Onkyo SR-804. Along with the tales of woe regarding my issue, I told the CSR about the Westinghouse TV issue (which he said Westinghouse has a fix for, is this true? I thought Westinghouse had denied responsibility.) and about the other TVs/receivers etc that have had the same problem. He firmly stated the problem was with my receiver.
I don't really get how that's possible, especially when the problem is only during game play and the XMB. It's also gotten worse through the latest updates. I just tried my first Blu Ray disc and it worked perfectly, no flicker. How can one medium go through just fine but the others fail? I actually purchased a Sammy Blu Ray player to test the receiver. I didn't open it after the disc played perfectly in the PS3. So what the heck is going on?
So is it my receiver (or anyone else's TV or receiver)? Or is it the PS3?
Angel L. 07-12-07, 11:30 PM What pcm setting do I choose in hdmi to take advantage of ddhd and dtshd?

I have a similar issue but mine is BD movies only via hdmi straight to my AX100U.
I'm using 1080p/24 output from the PS3. I'm going to try 1080p/60 this weekend and see if that reduces the frequency of the glitching.

I selected Menu > Input > HDMI, then pluged the PS3 and Samsung LCD with the HDMI cable... and I just keep getting "Searching For Signal" "No signal" for eternity... dunno what could be the problem, I read somewhere else that u have to hold ps3 start button till u hear second beep... but still nothing...

Welcome back to The World!
I am not familiar with the dream system... how many digital audio inputs does it have (either coax or toslink). If it has at least two selectable digital inputs you can run either coax or Toslink from your HD Satellite box and your PS3 to the Sony and then run HDMI from the Satellite box and PS3 to the Television. Turn the sound down on your television and use the Sony system to control sound.
Ideally I would suggest replacing the Sony receiver with one of the newer HDMI equipped receivers and then all you would need to do is run HDMI from the boxes to the reciever and a single HDMI from the receiver to the TV..., but that incurs added expense.

Thanks for the help. I believe it only has one optical audio input, which would cause me some problems. I am not too sure how it works, but I guess I could run HDMI from the sat box and ps3 to the television, then use optical to the receiver from the ps3. That would leave me without surround for the cable.....I guess I am in the market for a new receiver.

Yes the HTIB's can offer a great experience at a reasonable price..., but only if you stick with the components that they include... most that I have seen do not offer the opportunity to grow beyond their original capabilities.

Hello all hope someone can help me. I just bought a PS3. My tv is a Panasonic 42px60u plasma. Now I'm setting up my PS3 and asks what I want to do with the video output whether I want custom or automatic. Well I see if I do automatic it shows the highest output is 1080p. Now my tv to my knowledge only has up to 1080i. So I went ahead and picked 1080p. So when I look at my recall button it shows that it is indeed in 1080p. So what is going on????? Should I go and leave it at 1080i or what do I do???? Thanks

Tha panasonic plasmas support 1080p thru HDMI only. If you selected 1080p using component, the tv wouldnt display an image. Can you do me a favor and watch a DVD thru HDMI and tell me if its crappy quality or not? I have a 50" panasonic , and watching DVD on the ps3 via HDMI is total crap.
Oh ok cool I mean I thought even with hdmi my panasonic could only do 1080i. when I hit recall and saw 1080p i was shocked.
I just put in Letters from Iwo Jimma I guess it looks ok with 1080p can't tell any difference
I don't really use the ps3 for movies I have a sony dav-fx500 for that. I guess I'll just play games and blu ray on it if I have any. Do you know if 1080p is the best setting to use or 1080i?
sydney17 07-17-07, 02:37 AM Hi guys
I hook up my PS3 via HDMI to my Sharp LCD tv, and both video and audio are fine. Then I tried going through my Marantz SR 4001 receiver which has HDMI inputs x2, and output via HDMI to my tv to get 5.1 sound, I get nothing! No sound, no picture.
I was told it is a HDMI 1.1 issue- is that true? Read on the forum some passed through their 1.1? without problems.
Although now I have resorted to video output via HDMI to tv, and audio via optical to receiver, I'm just wondering what the world my "HDMI" certified receiver is for when I can't use it  ??

Hi,
...concerning either hdmi or component cable usage:
1) do you mean it outputs only 480i when playing standard def DVD's?
2) can you get the XMB display to render at 1080i or 720p?
3) do you have any blu ray movies?

1. It says 480i when I am at the Display settings for the PS3 at the component cables.
2. I have no idea how to get it to go any higher. I looked at the booklet that came with the tv and just says it can go up to 1080i.
3. I just ordered a Blu Ray movie that should be in, in the next few days.
So, I figured it out. My tv is not HDCP compliant. It just missed the mark of being it because the new version of it had it installed.
Ward216 07-19-07, 07:34 PM 1. It says 480i when I am at the Display settings for the PS3 at the component cables.
You should be able to select (using the check marks): 480p, 720p, 1080i resolutions.
Do you understand how to progress through this menu section to enable these?
3. I just ordered a Blu Ray movie that should be in, in the next few days.
This should run at 1080i via component video cable. Which is the one that uses Red, Green, & Blue rca jacks. I take it you bought this cable and the hdmi cable rather than use the composite (yellow connector) cable that comes with the PS3.

jedwards16 07-23-07, 11:09 AM Im posting this again since I havent been able to find anything new in the past few months.
I own a Samsung LNS3251D TV and, once I started using HDMI back in November, the screen would flicker when entering and leaving games and movies. I can also hear a faint "popping" noise during games, music, and movies
Ive switched to Component cables since then but would prefer to use HDMI. Ive been re-testing my problem with each new PS3 firmware upgrade and have had zero luck in solving it.
Has anyone heard of a fix? I try to check Samsungs website for firmware upgrades for my TV, but it isnt listed. Im assuming this means I have to call them and have some technician come to my house and do it?
Ward216 07-23-07, 09:51 PM ...I can also hear a faint "popping" noise during games, music, and movies...
I read there's a similar popping noise when used with the new Onkyo 805 receiver. At least when using the XMB via HDMI. You can find it here on the 805 user thread.

I'm having similar problems.
Since the most recent updates, I've been experiencing the quick 2-5 seconds of audio/video dropout. I've had my PS3 connected to my 60XBR2 through my Denon 2807 via HMDI since launch day. I've had no problems until the last few firmware updates (starting around 1.54 or so).
Is anyone else still having this problem, and are there any workarounds?
NeONGeneSAr 07-29-07, 02:28 AM Just got the 60GB PS3 today, hooked it up via HDMI, but I have a display question. Please note I don't have any PS3 games yet (preordered both Heavenly Sword and Assassin's Creed), so my question involves playing my old PS2 games on the PS3.
Q: why doesn't the video from PS2 games fill out the whole screen on my Pioneer PDP-5070HD?
i get a black border all around (slightly wider at the sides). my PS2 is connected to my plasma via component and displays the same black border. i hoped the PS3 output would fill the screen out fully.
i have version 1.90 installed, tried the video output at both 720p and 1080i (max resolution on the plasma, although native is 720p), set the PS/PS2 upscaler to full screen, set my plasma screen size to full. i've tried the other screen sizes but they cut off the image either on top or the sides.
i thought "normal" on the upscaler is supposed to fit the screen size, but it retains the 4:3 dimensions. "full screen" fills it out the best but not fully.

I have the Onkyo 605 and with HDMI there is a slight "popping" noise when a movie first starts playing and then when it ends (when quitting playback). All is fine on optical. Since it doesn't happen during games and only during the initial start of the movie and end of the movie, I just assumed it's "normal" since it seems to be working just fine.
DoucheVader 07-30-07, 11:21 PM Everything has sounded fine for months.
Now PS3 and DirecTV HD DVR sound tinny. PS3 games have no sound at all. Blu-Ray works but tinny.
Switch to my old DirecTV TiVo and it sounds fine. So I know the speakers are not blown.
Any suggestions?

I'm thinking it is the handshake issue, but its weird that it didn't start at launch. Only after the 1.54. firmware update did the problem start for me.

All is fine on optical. Since it doesn't happen during games and only during the initial start of the movie and end of the movie, I just assumed it's "normal" since it seems to be working just fine.
Mine does the exact same over HDMI with my Onkyo 605. Totally normal. Now I wish there was a way to get Pro Logic IIx when playing PS2 games, as they all come out in stereo though the PS3 is outputting a "PCM 5.1" signal, so the receiver says. The only way I found to get PLIIx back again is to plug an optical cable back in and get my audio that way. Crazy!
Upgrade 07-31-07, 04:50 PM I am set to buy a PS3 and a Toshiba 32HL67 LCD in the next two weeks. Does anyone know if this line of Toshibas will play nice with the PS3 via HDMI? I searched this thread and could not find anything on this particular line of LCDs.
For reference, the TV is 720p but can accept signals up to 1080p. Thanks a lot!
brijazz 08-02-07, 06:56 AM I had been having serious HDCP handshake trouble between my PS3 and Sony A2000 (see post #643). I swapped the HDMI cable from my PS3 with the one from my DVD player, and all problems have been solved. I'm just curious as to why this worked, seeing as the cable which I previously used on the PS3 works perfectly well in its new home with the DVD player (thus I'm assuming it wasn't a faulty cable). Is there some sort of variance in the way cables handle HDCP handshake timings that may have solved my problem?

fordpickup 08-09-07, 10:03 AM Got my Onkyo SR-804 back from the repair place yesterday. The annoying HDMI flicker is gone (at least, as far as I can tell)! Apparently it was an Onkyo issue. Whoo-hoo!
Sonisame 08-09-07, 11:23 AM Mits HD1000U, monoprice 4x1 HDMI Switch(4X1 Enhanced HDMI Switch with built-in Equalizer REV.2.5) and ps3 are having compatibility issues. I cannot get anything going on ps3 through the switch on hdmi connection, but when I connect ps3 straight to mits, everything works fine through hdmi connection, I have tried many reset(5 sec reset) on ps3 to get it going through the switch but had no luck. javeryh 08-11-07, 08:29 PM Hi. I didn't read this entire thread so I apologize in advance if this has been answered. Anyway, I have a Panasonic TH-42PX20 plasma HDTV - is it compatible with the PS3? Specifically, if I hook up a PS3 via HDMI and try to play a game that supports 720p only (Resistance) will my TV upscale it to 1080i or will it get displayed in 480p?
Thanks!

Your TV does 720p, I believe, so everything will work in 720p, which is the closest resolution to your native resolution, which (I believe) is 1024x768. You'll be just fine if all the above is true. :)

I'm having the exact same problem. I also have the Mits HD1000U. Got the Monorice 4x1 today and have been trying to get it to work but without success so far. Without that switch mits and PS3 is working okay with the HDMI cables I have.
EDIT: Played around more by switching cables etc. I plugged the HDMI cable to port 4 and suddenly I have a picture. I tried to shutdown everything few times to see that I works and seems to work now. Not sure why it didn't work from the beginning.
Benkrishman 08-15-07, 04:54 PM I read through some of this thread, but couldn't find what I was looking for.
I've got a panasonic CRT hd set that is 1080i native with no 720p upscaler. I'm looking at buying a PS3, but I wanted to see if the scaling issues had been fixed. Does the ps3 correctly scale to 1080i now on 720 native games? And if not, is it only some of the launch games that have the issue downscaling to 480p instead of up to 1080i?
If this is only an issue with older games(resistance), does anyone know if oblivion will scale to 1080i?

I dont know about Oblivion, but global upscaling has not been added. Some devs are actually working around it, such as the Warhawk devs who have announced that while their game renders at 720p, it will have an option to "upscale" and output to 1080i so that people in your situation wont be left out.
Benkrishman 08-15-07, 05:28 PM Thanks. So most games will be downscaled to 480p without a 720p set or upscaling set?
adams828 08-16-07, 08:08 AM Okay so I have a panny th-50px60u, and I'm thinking about getting a PS3. How's the quality with this tv? Good, bad or soso?
andydumi 08-16-07, 12:12 PM Thanks. So most games will be downscaled to 480p without a 720p set or upscaling set?
Well few games still offer 720p as their highest option. I think it was a "first gen" fluke, as now most everything allows everything from 480p to 1080p or 1080i.
But yes, those games with 720 as their highest will be 480p for your TV. I think the number of those TVs is so small nowadays that I dont think Sony will correct it, instead, devs are starting to move on up to 1080i 1080p themselves, much like Warhawk devs did. Sony will likely focus on other issues that are far more pressing and let this be a developer "fix".
Benkrishman 08-16-07, 12:37 PM Thanks. I found a list online of 1080i/p and 720p games so I know which will work for me(going to pick up nba street with my ps3).
The set I'll be playing on is a panny 26" crt, so I don't think I would notice as dramatic a difference in picture quality as I would on a larger set. I'll have to download a few 720 demos and see how they look.

Where is the list? I would like to see it if you dont mind.
And on a 26 inch TV, 480p will likely look just as good as 720p depending on your viewing distance.

zigaroo 08-19-07, 12:14 PM Sorry if this was brought up before but I did a search and didn't find anything that related to my recent experiences.
I ordered a Sharp Aquos LC-37D62U (1080p) a few days ago and got a PS3 to go along with it. I have it hooked up via HDMI currently and it was working perfectly fine with Ninja Gaiden Sigma. It wasn't until I attempted to play a demo that my problem arisen.
Black. It's all I get now ever since I tried to play the demo. Audio is there but no image. I can't even change Inputs to see cable TV. Hell, I can't even see the TV Menu appear, nor anything. No volume bar, no channel bar, nothing. The TV back light is fading in/out though so it is thinking the image is being outputted, but, I just see black. The power LED is solid green, btw.
Now, this is actually the second time this happened. The first time I somehow (don't ask how) got it come to back. I tried to go back and duplicate exactly what I had done to get the image to come back (which was an array of "button mashing (there was meaning to the madness though)" and trying a Factory Reset I found online from another forum (Holding the power button down, unplug, replug, etc) but still nothing has worked.
Is there anyone out there that can shed some light for me? Thanks!

The PS3 changes resolutions of the image outputted depending on what you are showing. The XMB is 1080p, Ninja Gainden is 1080p, but perhaps whatever the demo is it was shown in 720p and the TV is not accepting that very well. The PS3 switches the display output on/off for a brief second when changing resolutions, and maybe your TV hung up on that.
Try a variety of demos, such as GT5 for 1080p and something like Heavenly Sword for 720p and see if you are getting different results.
Also, try power cycling the TV once the demo "starts" and see if that will cause the TV to reaquire the HDCP handshake and fix any issues.
Keep us posted...

andydumi, the TV literally doesn't display an image at all. I could be on the cable box, the PS3, or the DVD player, I get nothing. Ontop of that, the TV menu, Input menu, and volume bar doesn't even appear.
But with the lower resolution hanging it up is an interesting thought but I was playing Heavenly Sword without a hitch. I was more so leaning on the fact that the HDMI handshake hung the TV up, hmm.
Well anyways, I am on hold with Sharp at the moment to get a guy out here to look at it. I'll post back when something comes up. I'll try to blindly navigate the PS3 to play a demo and power cycle it.
andydumi 08-20-07, 01:03 PM I see... it may very well be a TV issue caused by the handshake... Maybe its just a faulty TV and you can get it swapped out.
The PS3 seems fine if you can hear it working and the TV is also not working on other inputs.
zigaroo 08-20-07, 01:11 PM Yeah, I hear ya. A Sharp guy (or whoever they're dispatching) won't be out until Friday (sigh). I guess that gives me five days to head-butt this TV to try to get it working. Where are those magical wands that miraculously make things working, again?
Yeah, this is just a problem with the TV being unable to display squat. Thanks for the thoughts, andydumi.
Anyone else care to chime in? I think I am walking down a dark alley with this situation and a swap is going to be the only fix.
I can't get the PS3 to work via HDMI to my Samsung HLN4365W1 TV. When using a HDMI->DVI adapter (the TV does'nt have HDMI only DVI) I get a "no signal" message on the TV.
Has anyone had luck connecting the HLN series of Samsung DLP TV to a PS3. If so how did you do it?

I have a HLN4365W1 with a "no signal" message whenever I try to use the PS3 HDMI output. Was this the message you were getting?
cjucoder 08-21-07, 07:06 PM Has anyone had luck connecting the HLN series of Samsung DLP TV to a PS3. If so how did you do it?
I have a Sammy HLN617W DLP. I have HDMI from the PS3 going to an HDMI switchbox, and then the switchbox to the TV's DVI via an HDMI to DVI cable. Works great for me!
Funny story, when I was setting up PS3 for the first time it auto-detected that HDMI was plugged in. It asked me "do you want to use HDMI for audio and video?". I said "no" because I want to use HDMI for video only. Screen went black and TV said "no signal". :p I just started over with the setup and answered "yes" next time.
Hope you get it figured out.
Thought I'd chime in. I bought a Magnavox 37MF437B - 37" 1080p. I hooked up the PS3 via HDMI (Cyclone 1.3) and the PS3 detected every resolution: 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. The problem was when I checked the highest setting (1080p) It worked, but I got a... weird, blue/purple static. The XMB menu, games, dvd, this blue static noise would not go away. When I unchecked 1080p and left 1080i as the max, it worked great. My first guess is it's a HDCP conflict. I'm gonna try component cables tomorrow and see if that gets me around the issue.
spikspgl 08-24-07, 12:08 PM i just got my PStriple and i have a Sony KP-51WS510. can i use a HDMI-to-DVI cable for the picture?
what about the sound? DVI doesn't do sound right?
Component cables got me around the issue with a clearly better picture than HDMI at 1080i. I was surprised. Maybe 1080p isn't as overrated as I thought, or maybe component cables aren't inferior to HDMI as I thought. I'm glad to be outputting 1080p but it still bothers me that I couldn't get HDMI to work at 1080p. I'll experiment with it later but for now I'm just gonna enjoy the TV.
Spikspgl I don't know much about projection TVs or the dvi interface but it seems to operate in conjunction with HDCP which I THINK is part of the compatibility/compliance problems. But I had issues at 1080p, not 1080i, and that it's related to HDCP is just a guess of mine. You could just go with component cables though.

HDMI to DVI works great, that's how i have 2 of my PS3's set up.
no, DVI doesn't carry sound, use an optical cable for sound, chose the right configuration in the PS3 settings and your good to go.
Hi, anyone with an HP 5880 or 6580 have the PS3 hooked up to it via HDMI?
I cannot seem to get BTB to pass in DVD playback regardless of settings, but it passes in BD. Anyone else getting this issue?
Tour de Force 08-29-07, 02:19 PM I have a quick question here that I don't think has been specifically answered.
I have a 1080i CRT Rear-Projection HDTV, a Hitachi 51S500 to be exact. If I understand correctly, my TV has an internal scaler in it. If that is the case, then the lack of a scaler on the PS3 won't hurt me right?
That is, even though my TV does not natively render 720p, it will take the 720p input from a PS3 game, and then scale it up to 1080i? Is that correct or incorrect?
If that is correct, then the only way that someone would get stuck with
480p on a 1080i set is if that set did not have an internal scaler in it?
I will be connecting the PS3 to my HDTV via Component Video Cable. Will that change anything or present any problems?
Thanks!
UxiSXRD 08-29-07, 02:43 PM I've previously posted to my hiccup free performance from my 60XBR1 SXRD, my Denon 4306 (HDMI 1.1), and my PS3.
I have noticed something that's actually semi-useful... but there must be some sort of... "feedback" or "surge" or something via HDMI, because I've noticed when I turn on my HDTV (Sony 60XBR1) with my Harmony that the screen on my Denon RC1024 EL remote (in semi-permanent retirement on the TV stand) lights up and intermittently, my PS3 will turn on. I have PS3 connected via HDMI to my Denon 4306 and my Denon connected to my XBR1 via HDMI. Anyone else experience anything similar?
zigaroo 08-30-07, 04:04 PM Hey guys. Just a couple of posts up from this one I had a problem with my Sharp Aquos LC-37D62U and the PS3. My initial problem was thinking the HDMI -> HDCP handshake was "failing" and had rendered the screen completely useless. I was under this assumption because it occurred the exact moment I started up a demo... literally. I hit X, boom. Gone.
Well, just got word from the local TV repair shop that some connector was loose in the panel. Go figure, right? Oh well, I get it back tomorrow morning so we'll see. I'm still rather skeptical of this all. :P But who wouldn't be?...
*Play demo* *Connector unplugs* "...sup black screen."
BoredTiger 09-01-07, 12:02 AM ONKYO 804 and PS3 HDMI
Hello folks. I noticed a few posters have already brought this problem up, but I haven't seen any clear solutions, so I'm following up with my post and asking if ANYBODY has a solution for the following problem:
I am getting HDMI flicker when I play PS3 games, which increases with MENU screens. Movies play without any issues.
I confirmed that this issue is due to my PS3 routing through my ONKYO 804 receiver. Is there a way around this issue?
Thank you all.
WallaceLau 09-01-07, 10:50 AM Didn't know if this combo has been posted before, I just go my PS3 hooked up with the Panasonic PT-AX100U projector via 25-ft HDMI cable (from Monoprice) and it worked great. Resistance at 720p looked bigger then life. The Grand Turismo demo is awesome too. Last night we watched the movie 300 at 1080p/24 on a 108 inch screen... and I thought life cannot be better!! I didn't know if the projector was able to actually run the LCDs at 24Hz, but the status screen shows 1080p/24 so it at least negotiated the 24 frame-per-second frame rate with the PS3 without any problem. I also didn't notice any jitter either. Maybe someone can tell me if the projector can output at 24Hz natively, or its doing its own 3:2 pull-down and output at 60Hz. Audio was sent via optical-out directly to the receiver (still have to upgrade the receiver to HDMI... shame on me). Oh the PS2 was only running 1.8 firmware.
By the way, I figure I should mention this too: twice in the movie I saw a horizontal purple line jumped in the screen for a split second. Now, the disc was a rental and towards the later part of the movie it actually started skipping, and I took the disk out, cleaned it, and the skipping went away. So maybe the purple line was due to a dirty disk as well... however we didn't want to go back and watch the whole movie again just to confirm, maybe I will post again after our next movie rental. I seems to think others had seen the same glitch with other PS3 as well, just too lazy to look back.
Hope the report helps.

I run the same setup as you do. I was able to eliminate the purple line on BD movies by changing how the PS3 handles the color space. You can search my posts in this thread for the fix if you're interested.
Cheers to another happy AX100/PS3 owner :D

Awesome! I searched for your post, and if I understand correctly I believe you are referring to setting the BD video output at Y-Pb/Cb-Pr/Cr (instead of automatic)? Since this thread is now 24 pages long I just don't have time to read through all of it, but if RGB output is what causes the purple line then I will make that change and try it out!
Thanks!

p.s. I love my AX100U/PS3 combo!!
p.p.s. Do you know if the AX100U do its internal 3:2 pull-down to 60Hz then resample to 720p (or the other way around) when we feed it 1080p/24 material? Or does the chip physically supports 24Hz refresh rate, so the projector simply down-sample and show at 720p/24?

You are correct; I'm about 10 BD movies in and still flicker free after the change.

I have no idea. Good question 'tho. Maybe someone in the AX100 thread could answer that.

I have almost the same issue, except it flickers all the time. I have a Sony 40V2500 XBR Bravia which is hooked up to the Onkyo 804 via HDMI and I get the screen flickering but I do hear audio. I can take the Onkyo out of the equation and the PS3 works fine when hooked to the Sony 40V2500 XBR Bravia via HDMI. Does anyone know if it is the receiver or the PS3?
Thanks in Advance!!!
BoredTiger 09-05-07, 03:29 AM Hey Reep!
The issue is the 804 (Receiver).
There are other owners of the receiver who have this exact same problem. I noticed that this problem only occurred in the more recent firmware updates. So, it's apparent that some changes made to the PS3 communication through the HDMI cable is not going too well with the older receiver. Perhaps an HDMI compatibility issue?
So the hope is that either Sony PS can come up with a solution in an update/firmware or ONKYO puts forth a viable solution.
As for now, I have not heard anything from previous posters who have had this problem, as they seemed to have logged out of the forums once their issue was resolved :(
Looks like it's time to sell the 804. I'm looking at the 705 which only has minor issues with the PS3, nothing like the 804.

splinters 09-05-07, 07:43 PM Does anyone know if the PS3 can decoded DTS-HD and DOLBY TRUE HD on there blue-ray movies via hdmi 1.3?
I recommend searching the forums. DTS-HD-MA is the one that can't be decoded internally on the ps3 currently. The rest can be decoded and outputted in PCM format via HDMI. No bitstreaming of the lossless audio via HDMI 1.3, not sure if that will ever be there given the chipset.

adams828 09-05-07, 08:09 PM Hi all quick question - just got my PS3 and doing setup. When I did auto-detect screen (via HDMI), it registered 1080p even though my plasma is only 720p.... should I try and go back and reset the setting??
Thanks!
BoredTiger 09-06-07, 01:15 AM probably a smart idea to set the setting to what your display is (720p).
Otherwise, you'll have a helluva time recovering a "BLACK" screen that you can't navigate.

Actually, it's quite possible that he has a 720p (or more likely 768p) plasma that accepts a 1080p input signal, since the PS3 is detecting what input formats the display accepts, not what the physical resolution is.
If that's the case, he might be better off selecting 720p over 1080p, but it depends how the display handles scaling of the different input formats. Go with whichever one looks better.

Awesome, thanks Dixie. I didn't realize that the PS3 would just read what the TV will *accept*. I'll have to test out the different settings and see which looks better. Although I did play a little GT Prolouge on the 1080p setting and it looked AWESOME.
My only question: My tv will accept 720p, 1080i (and apparently 1080p). Do I ever need to be concerned with games downscaling to 480p as long as I am using HDMI?
Thanks!
BoredTiger 09-06-07, 10:28 PM I don't think the PS3 will downscale your games if your display is connected via HDMI.
The console is supposed to choose the best resolution.
Of course, I've been known to be wrong...:D

strongcoffee 09-11-07, 01:28 AM PS3 flickering screen when playing games at 720p
First off, let me provide the details of my setup.
60GB PS3 (latest firmware 1.92)
32" Sharp LC-32D42U Aquos LCD HDTV (supports 480p, 720p, & 1080i)
Onkyo TX-SR505 Digital Receiver
I currently view PS3 video output (games & video) using the HDMI pass-through feature of my receiver--my PS3 is connected to my receiver via HDMI cable while the receiver is connected to the TV through HDMI cable as well. Sound is output via toslink/optical directly to the receiver.
DVDs, Blu-Ray discs, and video files play at 1080i just fine. The problem I'm having deals with playing video games at 720p, which is what most default to because they don't seem to support 1080i. The video display starts to flicker every 1-3 seconds between a black screen and a partial signal of whatever game I'm trying to play at the time. The games that i've tried so far are actual game discs of Virtua Fighter 5 and NBA College Hoops 2K7 as well as game demos of Ninja Gaiden, Gran Turismo, Folklore, Resistance, and Stranglehold. What's interesting is that the game demo of Super Puzzle Fighter HD doesn't provide any problems because it displays at 1080i.
What I did to isolate the problem is by doing a System Restore. This reset video and sound to output solely through HDMI. Playing game discs was just fine through this setting--no flickering screen and what not. Once I set the Sound Settings to optical/toslink, the problem began to re-occur. I tried another set-up with PS3 to TV via HDMI for video and PS3 to receiver via toslink/optical for audio and got the same flickering/digital snow problem.
Can anyone shed some light on this issue and how it can be resolved? Thanks in advance.
BoredTiger 09-12-07, 07:39 AM Interesting procedure to troubleshoot there...
So when you did a SYSTEM RESTORE and it reset the video/audio to HDMI, did you also UPDATE the firmware again?
Or were you testing this on it's original firmware?
I'd like to do some testing on my own as well (I have the same flicker problem).
strongcoffee 09-12-07, 12:59 PM apparently there's no need to update the firmware upon enacting a System Restore.
I have the same problems with the Sceptre X37. PS3 UI needs DVI input to avoid pink sparkles, movies need HDMI input. Very annoying. Is there any workaround so I don't have to constantly cycle through the inputs (and with the Sceptre, that means cycling, not selecting directly)?
I may have to return the thing to Costco and pick up something else. Luckily I bought it before the change in the return policy!
Seems no one has rated the Sceptre X42 (or the essentially identical X37) with a PS3 yet ...
I bought an X42 Sceptre (1080P LCD) in March/April. I have the 'old' media box with a single HDMI input, that is switchable between HDMI, HDMI/HDCP and DVI (no overscan) modes for resolutions upto 1920x1080 (1080p)
I am running all my 5 HDMI/DVI source (One TiVo HD S3 DVR, one Moto Comcast 6412 DVR, Toshiba SDK860 upconverting DVD player, HT PC running Windows XP/7600GT and now my brand new PS3) through an 'old' (April 2006) monoPrice 5x1 HDMI switch.
OK, enough background ...
- PS3 menu, games, trailers that do not require HDCP negotiation work well ONLY in DVI mode with the Sceptre, and have pink/red splotches in HDMI/HDCP modes.
- BluRay movies work ONLY in HDCP/HDMI mode, and no splotches appear.
So, basically, I have to switch through input modes on the TV, but there is at least one flawless 1080p (source/display) mode on the TV for everything my PS3 spits out. I'm HAPPY :)
DavidAJohnson 09-12-07, 09:32 PM I'm looking to purchase a PS3 but my tv is a Sony KV30HS420 which only handles 1080i and from what I heard it will upscale a 720p signal to 1080i.My Concern is that any game that is 720p it will downconvert it to 480p. I'm wondering if anyone has had this issue i want to go thru the hdmi port that i have on my tv .
...my tv is a Sony KV30HS420 which only handles 1080i and from what I heard it will upscale a 720p signal to 1080i...
If your TV will upscale the signal from 720p to 1080i then you are fine. Only if your TV won't accept a 720p source then you'd have a problem.
BoredTiger 09-12-07, 10:02 PM Ok, I'm going to try this today. I'll post my results tonight as well.
BoredTiger 09-12-07, 10:23 PM apparently there's no need to update the firmware upon enacting a System Restore.
Wait a second...did you do a full system PS3 restore?
This restore is the one that wipes out the hard disk and saved games and what not.
Or did you simply "restore settings", where you restore the default settings?
I'm weighing the decision of wiping out my game progress on certain games, as I did play a lot.
BoredTiger 09-12-07, 10:50 PM I quickly tried the Restore Default settings restore and it didn't help at all. Still get the flicker.
strongcoffee 09-13-07, 12:32 PM Post your set-up and we'll go from there. I did both types of restores in my attempt to solve the problem, which really hasn't been resolved unless I go with a boring PS3 to TV setup for both video and sound.
I quickly tried the Restore Default settings restore and it didn't help at all. Still get the flicker.
BoredTiger 09-13-07, 09:51 PM Strongcoffee - yea...I want to avoid that "work-around".
I couldn't stand it any longer, so I just ordered a new receiver! HAHHAA
I purchased the ONKYO 705 (The one below the new 805).
It has everything I need and an added HDMI port (3 in, 1 out). So I appreciate the added port since I have a PS3, HD-DVR, and room for something else.
The ONKYO 804 receiver I currently have, is having problems because it is not a 1.3a HDMI port. I found out from ONKYO tech support that the service they intend to do, when I ship my receiver back to them is to upgrade the processor and ports (the HDMI ports) to the new 1.3a revision. The service is FREE. The only problem is shipping the damn 60lb receiver to ONKYO regional service center in DENVER, CO.
So, instead of putting up with that nonsense of NOT having a receiver and paying for what's sure to be expensive shipping fees, I ordered a new receiver, and decided to SELL my ONKYO 804.
Hopefully, someone will want this monstrousity.
I haven't touched any of my PS3 games because of this FLICKER issue...so frustrating!!!
gferley 09-17-07, 05:34 PM I'm currently in a fight with Sharp's support (I have a new 46" 64U) re my PS3 and audio via HDMI. My setup is simple, HDMI from PS3 to TV, optical out from TV to my receiver. PS3 is always latest version (1.93 ATM), and have no problems when setup to use PS3's optical out directly to receiver (and PS3 configured properly).
Could people give a shout confirming that their particular model of TV has no problems dealing with the PS3 sending out audio via HDMI and passing through via the TV's optical out to their amp/receiver? Sharp support is currently claiming that their TV works as well as their competitors, and none of them support audio from the PS3 via HDMI. I claim BS, but have better things to do than hanging out in an electronics store proving them right or wrong.
The bloody TV isn't even outputting sound from its internal speakers when the PS3 is set to just send 2-channel linear PCM, let alone out via its optical cable.
Your help is extremely appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Our Samsung LCD does not do this. It receives HDMI sound and outputs it to the speakers, but it will only pass via optical whatever comes from a tuner (OTA or cable). Same behavior with a cable box outputting via HDMI and a DVD player via HDMI.
I had to connect all the optical outs/HDMIs from the devices straight to the receiver for sound with HDMI video passthru to the TV.
Sorry to bear bad news but I believe this is normal.

No need to apologize, and I really appreciate your quick and accurate reply. Unless anyone else counters your argument, I guess I must concede defeat.

Though one point in my favor is that the television passes through audio coming in via HDMI from my satellite box via it's optical output, but not from my PS3 (configured correctly to do this). Why some devices and not others?

Wait, I do have a correction to my original statement. It will pass whatever it receives, but only stereo signals. Anything beyond two channels needs to come from the tuner (OTA HD 5.1 usually) or be passed directly from device to the receiver. Thats why i set everything to go straight to receiver, because watching DVDs, Blurays or playing games in stereo is pretty passe.

Got my question answered on my Owner's Thread. HDCP compliance is the problem. Should have figured something as illogical as what I was experiencing was the result of a government regulation meant to protect against piracy. Thanks for the responses.
jhandel 09-20-07, 12:41 AM I'll start off with my setup then I'll dive in to the merid of tests that have all failed. Hopefully someone on hear will have an idea cause I am STUMPED!
Setup:
PS3 (which I have had for about 4 months) Connected via HDMI (video and audio)
Sony STR-DG1000 New (Just got it monday)
Westinghouse LMV-42w (Had it for about 15 months no problem)
Issue:
Horrible Buzzing/Static from Center channel (and only center channel) from the PS3 via HDMI Audio out.
Pre test notes:
Before I got this Sony STR-DG1000 receiver I had an HK AVR247. The burned out (don't know why) and I had a service plan. Long story (and many trips to best buy later, they gave me a clearance (but still new in the box) STR-DG1000. Prior to this the PS3 worked perfectly with the HK AVR247 (which is an HDMI switching 7.1 receiver like the Sony STR-DG1000 is).
Tests I have run (in no particular order) all with the same result (except where noted):
1) New Cable
2) Other new cable
3) Optical out (No static sounds fine but no 7.1)
4) Other Other new cable
5) Every Linear PCM audio setting (All 2 channel options sound fine as they do not engage the center channel, its the 5.1 and 7.1 options that cause the static)
6) Both HDMI inputs on the STR-DG1000
7) Audio only (disconnected the TV, which I did because I heard some complaints about the HDMI HDCP handshake having issues with a PS3)
8) Verious startup combinations (TV first, PS3 first, receiver first, etc.. stuff like that)
9) Move PS3 away from WII and Xbox 360
10) Validated that surround sound works from my Dish Network via HDMI (can't test PCM as dish doesn't DO PCM)
11) Tested 1080p, 1080i, 720p video out (just incase the video out was causing audio issues... I don't know, I'm grasping at straws here :-P)
12) Changed the plug the PS3 was plugged into.
13) tried the "Un Grounded" hack that some on the Sony forums suggested might resolve the issue.
Ok so anyone got any ideas? I am TOTALLY Stumped here! This is quite frustrating (which is only compounded by the 3 weeks of best buy related issues I have been having with Audio receivers in general but thats a diffrent story).
Thanks in advance
Josh

Have you tried switching the output of front and centre channels to the speakers ? It may help to determine where the problem lies.
savage1984 09-22-07, 08:42 PM Hi there,
I am new to this forum. I just purchased the panny th50pz750u and it's gorgeous. Soon I will be getting a PS3 for both gaming and blu-ray. My question is this, since this tv doesn't do 24 mhz, it does 60 mhz (i think that's right), will connecting the two via HDMI give me a black box around the outside of the screen? I've heard something about this and am hoping it's just a false rumor. I would appreciate any input thanks.
jhandel 09-23-07, 01:13 PM Ed_t,
It end up being a bad LPCM module in my STR-DG1000. Swapped it out at best buy and I was up and running with the new one no problem.. This was my 4th bad receiver in 2 months (which was why I tried so many diffrent things, I just couldn't believe I had ANOTHER bad receiver)... I am having bad electronics karma right now I guess.
* I should note that previous to this Sony receiver I had gone thru 3 HK AVR247's

The refresh rate and the "black box" have nothing to do with each other. The refresh rate of the PS3 can be set as 60 or 24. 24 for those TVs that support it, and 60 otherwise.
I am not sure what black box you mean, the only thing i can think of is overscan. Newer TVs let you display in 1:1 pixel ratio, or just fit, and thus see everything the PS3 renders, the full 1080p.
frankdib 10-03-07, 03:31 PM I recently purchased the Sharp Aquos LC-46D64U LCD. The TV has 3 HDMI 1.3 ports. If I remember correctly, the PS3 is also HDMI 1.3 capable. My question is what settings do I need to have or what do I need to do to make sure I'm getting the full HDMI 1.3 potential. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
EvoIXse 10-07-07, 09:15 PM I have a Pioneer 5010 connected to my PS3 via a Monoprice HDMI 1.3 cable. I've had absolutely no problems.

I think you mean 24 Hz ( 1 Hertz = 1 cycle per second ). The previous response was correct in that 24/30/60 Hz has nothing to do with the formatting of the image, it's really a product of the format of the material on the source DVD.
Rest assured, I have the same TV, and the PS3 looks absolutely stunning on it with both Blu-ray and game.
Make sure you follow the plasma burn-in recommendations found elsewhere in the forum. You won't regret doing that.
I'm especially tickled with the fact that I can burn a normal DVD-R ROM with AVCHD content from my Panasonic HDC-SD5 1080p camcorder and the Sony PS3 will play it back perfectly in full 1080p resolution.
Enjoy!
Using a Sharp AQUOS LC-42D64U right now, no problems, far better than my previous Westy 42in monitor :)
I haven't read through this thread yet (but about to start) but i've been having a problem and not sure if it was covered yet.
I've got a Vizio VX37L for my PS3 and have it hooked up with HDMI cables from Monoprice. Everything was fine for the first week or so, and then I turned on my PS3 and had no video, only audio and the controls of the ps3 worked. I tried a little troubleshooting and switched TV inputs and cables but everything was fine except the PS3. It's like the ps3 reset itself or something. I had to restart the system several times for the HDMI connection to take and then it worked again, for a few days.
I left the ps3 on overnight last night to download some demos and when I checked it this am, the same thing happened.
I called Sony and they have heard of this problem, but said it was most likely a cable or TV issue, but didn't say it wasn't the ps3 either.
I also get the 'no signal' when entering/exiting a game, don't know if that is related or if it's just switching resolutions.
LoveXBR5-PS3 10-15-07, 12:22 AM Hi all. I need help/advice, last week bought a new a sony KDL-40 XBR5 lcd tv, the new 40gb ps3, as im in australia and its available here. I also got a crest HDMI cable from the sony store. The one problem i'm having is i cant get 1080p over the HDMI connection all the other res work fine 1080i 720p etc . what happens is this when i switch to 1080p in ps3 display settings, the signal cuts in and out and is fuzzy and distorted and imposible to leave as is so i have to go back down to 1080i. I cant figure out if its the cable thats the poblem the ps3 or maybe the tv? has anyone else heard of or eperienced this issue? please let me know i need help........
BIGDINZ 10-15-07, 09:38 PM Samsung LN-T4665F
Older version had HDMI issues. Serial numbers with 8th/9th numbers should be "P(2007)/and at least "6"(month)" or later. I own one("P9) and it works flawlessly with my PS3 through HDMI.
R0CK632 10-20-07, 05:03 PM Sorry But I cant seem to find the answer to my particular problem anywhere in this posting so if any of you can help... Id appreciate it..
When I turn on my playstation 3 via HDMI to my Samsung lcd..When in the menu..my television will blink and occasionally go blank and and once in a while will even turn into a gray static screen. This only happens when iam scrolling through the menus but the second I go into a game, I have no issues. It may not sound like a big deal but when you want to surf on the internet or look at photos..everything blinks and its really annoying. Has anyone heard of this not happening in the game and only in the menu? And if you have any suggestions I would appreciate it. Thanks!

You should post your problem here, if it is one of those model numbers. If it's not then look for your model number in the LCD TV section. You'll get more answers there.

Hello Everyone,
Part-time lurker, now I have an issue:
Just bought a new 80GB PS3 (comes with Motostorm).
I have a Sharp Aquos LC-60C46U. Currently, the TV does not even detect the HDMI cables.
Yes, I've tried to setup the Display Settings in the PS3 Menu.
Yes, I've tried two different cables. One from Apple Stores and the other is a 3rd party React HDMI cable, 1.3a I believe?
Any and all help would be appreciated, fellas.
Do I need to upgrade my TVs software or something?
Thank you!
P.S. No blinking or anything like that...the TV simply does not detect a HDMI input (circle with diagonal line)
andydumi 10-25-07, 11:25 PM Try connecting everything and with the PS3 off, turn it on by holding the front power button on for 5-7 seconds, until you hear a beep, then let go. The PS3 will power up and autodetect HDMI.
Also, do any other HDMI inputs work on your TV? Any other HDMI sources? Maybe its a TV issue.
Worst case, go swap out the PS3, and if you still have the same problem, its a TV issue.

This is a month late, but I just got a PS3 yesterday. 1080p through HDMI works beautifully on my GV42LF. The 5" larger screen shouldn't change anything I wouldn't think.

If its a TV issue, then you can go to the forum for that TV and see if you can get some help, or call the manufacturer.
chmilar 10-29-07, 06:35 PM I am having audio problems with a PS3 connected to a Denon 4306 receiver, via HDMI:
Symptoms:
For the most part, there is no sound played through the Denon, but there are some exceptions:
1) The "orchestra tuning" startup sound plays. After that, none of the other sounds from the dashboard are played.
2) The PlayStation signature sound plays when a game is launched (ie. when the screen says "PlayStation 3").
3) I launched the F1 Championship demo, and the commentator's voice is played, but no other sounds!
4) Super Rub-a-Dub demo has sound.
None of the movie trailers I have tried play audio. I have not tried all games or demos yet, but most of the ones I have tested have no sound.
The display panel on the 4306 says "Multichannel input" (or something like that) and displays the 7.1 speaker lights.
What I have tried:
1) Upgraded the firmware on 4306. PS3 is at 1.94.
2) Connected by optical spdif. This did not help at all.
3) Reset the PS3 (holding powerup button for six seconds, and going through the automatic setup menus).
The PS3 does play all audio when connected directly to the TV with HDMI.
Another piece of data (but it may be completely unrelated): I have a Samsung T151 receiver for OTA broadcast TV. It sends Dolby Digital over optical. On some Los Angeles channels, commercials often have no sound. This may be related to the PS3 glitch, or it may just be a problem with the broadcasters.
Does anyone have a suggestion?
The fact that your PS3 works fine when connected to your TV via HDMI means that your Denon is not setup correctly, and the problem with certain commercials OTA might be the same root cause.
So you might want to check that: in audio setting portion of PS3, you are dumping audio signal to the correct terminal depending on your intended connection type (HDMI or toslink), and appropriate format is selected depending on your Denon's capability; also check your receiver settings, I cannot go into detail because I'm not familiar with 4306, but looks like there's setting issue with your Denon because it's less likely that your PS3 and broadcaster (especially this one) go wrong at the same time
just my $.02 :)
chmilar 10-30-07, 01:58 PM I figured out my problem. It was some speaker settings on the Denon. All is well!
Saleen4971 11-01-07, 04:56 PM i ahve a sammy HL-S6187W DLP TV connected to my PS3 via a monorpice 6 foot HDMI cable, and i have had no issues at all. 1080P via HDMI and 5.1 via optical to my yamaha reciever
HiHoStevo 11-02-07, 07:06 PM Well I see the 40gig model of the PS3 is now available for $3xx... and they did include the Blu-Ray disk of Spidey3... however, apparently they do not "also" include the MotorStorm game so you are getting the DVD instead of the game... which if I am not mistaken is about half the price of the game... kinda makes me wonder if the 40gig is really as good a deal as I thought it was going to be................
Also is there a link to the correct audio settings on the PS3 if you are connecting via HDMI to one of the newer HDMI 1.3 AVR's??
Saba187 11-02-07, 08:16 PM keep gettin hdmi no signel but so everytime it happens i have to turn the unplug the power from the ps3 and tv

dutchca 11-03-07, 10:47 AM I am uing an HDMI/DVI cable fine for upconversion of SD DVD's and for the 720P games. I use component for BD and the 1080i games perfectly.
I have a problem - when setting the RGB to "full" rather than limited I get a green glow around bright areas, moreso prevalent when the bright area is beside a dark area. It is unwatchable. When using limited, I lose a lot of colour depth and the picture is a little washed out, but better than watching upconverted content at 480P.
Any suggestions?
