I am now worried to death that my tv will have issues with the PS3. Even though Sony demo'ed the PS3 with the tv that I have, it still means nothing to me until real people post up real info. If you have your PS3 hooked up via HDMI please post your results here. I am looking for a Sony xbr2 (46 inch version if that matters at all) that has tried this. Thanks for any info guys and gals.

Sony
xbr2 60 inches-Displays image fine when it is available but losses image randomly. Blackouts happen and then the image reappears.
xbr2 46 inch-No issues at all, syncs right up.
xbr1 50 inch-only displays at 720p (this could be because this set doesnt support 1080p, more research neeed)
xrd 60 and 50 inches-Randomly loses signal like the 60" Sony xbr2

Samsung
BD-P1000-steady flickering image
other display "sparkly" noise images with 1080p resolution but seems fine with 720p.
4696D-reports no signal found via hdmi sometimes and other times it works great.
HL-S5087W-no issues with hmdi

Panasonic
TH42PX500-Randomly loses signal like the 60" Sony xbr2

Westinghouse
LVM-47w1-Randomly loses signal like the 60" Sony xbr2
42w2-flashing screen and signal loss but works fine via hmdi-dvi
37w3-flashing screen and no signal, turn off the tv and turn it back on and it seems to work.

JVC
JVC HD-61FN97-seems to work fine with everything except 480p via hdmi

I'll sticky this...
Just make sure to use this thread strictly for HDMI issues. You the other sticky for general setup problems/issues.

Thanks,

I appreciate it Kysersose. I figured this deserved something on its on since it is specific to certain tvs. I am anxiously awaiting responses, I only have 2 left on my return policy.

well i'll tell you right now. i have the xbr1 50 inch. i got that because i was told by both sony and best buy that when the ps3 did come out. I would have no problem via hdmi acquiring 1080p resolution. well as of right now the highest i can achieve is 720p.

This is very frustrating. I'm going to bb later to demand i get a tv that will do 1080p via hdmi

I have Sony XBR2 60 connected through HDMI. I can achieve maximum 1080P resolution.

The probllem I'm having is that periodically the input goes black, akin to when there is no video source for that video input.

It does this for about 2 to 5 minutes, then the screen will come back to where it was. This has happened at the XMB and while creating an online account. Moving the controller button or such has not helped.

I'm not sure what the reasons are as yet. But it is annoying.

Your display never was supposed to recieve 1080P. I have the 60" model and although it is native 1080P, it can only recieve 480I, 480P, 720P and 1080I. When did u buy the display.

I have a Mitsubishi WD-Y57 (Similar to the 57732), and it displays 1080p fine through HDMI. I am having audio issues, however, but I am not sure whether it is a problem with HDMI, the PS3, or the TV. I have it set up for the PS3 to send the audio out to the TV via HDMI, and the TV has Digital Coax out to our 7.1 Onkyo receiver. When the PS3 is set to 5.1 or 7.1 the Onkyo flashes to dolby during menus, but when the movie/game starts it switches to stereo, and we only get the left/right channels of the surround (music only, no center means no voices.) The fact that the Onkyo switches at all to Dolby is leaning me toward it being a problem with the PS3, but I don't have any other HDMI devices in that room that put out audio through HDMI so I don't know for sure. I am out of optical inputs on my Onkyo, so right now I have the PS3 set to stereo, I hope that there is a fix for this, because running stereo out of this system is a disservice to my setup.

Ok here we go...picked up my PS3 this morning from gamestop. I too was worried about my CRT RPTV (about 3 yrs old), cuz it was native 1080i, but it does have an internal scaler and DVI/HDCP. Hooked up through DVI, PS3 recognized my max res at 720p, so Resistance and NHL worked fine for the brief period i played it. So i am relieved i guess. BTW my tv is Toshiba 46HX83 Cinema Series. Looks like im lucky i guess.

I have successfully tested the following setups :

1. PS3 connected via HDMI to Anthem AVM-50 pre-amp. TV connected to pre-amp via HDMI-DVI to Hitachi 65SWX20B
Resolutions successfully tested : 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p
Resolutions not supported : 480i over HDMI (PS3 did not give me an option)

Played BD (MI III), SACD, CD, Ipod, DVD-R

2. PS3 connected to Vizio 32" LCD directly via HDMI.
Resolutions successfully tested : 1080i, 720p

Played BD (MI III), DVD-R

3. PS3 connected via Component to Denon AVR-3300. Denon connected to Runco DLP via Component
Resolutions successfully tested : 1080i, 720p

Played BD (MI III)

Gripes : Cannot output audio/video on all outputs at the same time. This is no biggie as I just have to switch settings

Picture quality : This is my first look at BD/HD-DVD and was a bit underwhelmed. I felt NFL/NCAAF/TNT-HD basketball games looked a lot better. Its definitely an improvement over DVD.

Bluetooth : Very impressed. I was able to place the PS3 in my theater room closet and control it wirelessly in the other room thru a wall. I have a 25ft HDMI cable (monoprice) feeding the Vizio.

Games : Waiting for my son to get home from school, not a gamer myself.

Overall impressions : I want a second one. This one is for my son to play games. I was floored with its versatility and will use the second one for music and movies in the family room (when I can land a second one :) ).

I have the Sony Bravia KDL-40XBR2 LCD and so far no issues of any kind with PS3 connected via HDMI. Have tried Resistance (720p), Ridge Racer 7 (1080p), and Genji (720p...what can I say...I'm a sucker for giant enemy crabs!). So far, I am a happy camper.

I have a Pioneer Elite Pro 520 HD 480p/1080i CRT, with component inputs only.

Call to Duty 3, which states that it supports 1080i, is being passed as 480p 4:3 ratio.

Blu-ray appears to be working fine at 1080i.

I have a Westinghouse 42w2 and mine didn't like the 1080p from PS3 HDMI. I wound up going to Walmart an hour ago and trying a HDMI-DVI adapter which I hooked up to DVI 1 port and the 1080p is working flawlessly at the moment. Tried Resistence, which stays in HD now, which is all the proof I need that 1080P works well now. Also Talladega Nights is working without all the snowy sparkle effects, or whatever the term is.

Now if only I could get my 360 to play nice with my TV at 1080p I'd be a real happy camper :)

Have you been experiencing problems on this set? I have the same one and seem to be getting mixed responses (some saying it only supports up to 720p from the PS3, others to 1080i), and others seem to have issues with dropouts on the 60" models.

I'm here to ask if anyone has theirs connected through a Yamaha receiver, particularly model RX-V2600?

The Models 1600, 1700, and 2700 should all have similar results...

While I'm at it, I'd like to ask about straight connections to a Mitsubishi WD-62628?

I have my PS3 in hand, but don't want to open it if it won't work with any of my stuff!!!

I can say the Samsung HL-S5087W has no issues whatsoever with video over HDMI..... Audio on the PS3 is all screwed up. It will only support 2-channel audio over HDMI at this point as far as I can tell. It really sucks, Sony goes on and on about HD and Surround sound, and yet the POS only supports 2 channel over HDMI. I have yet to be able to get a game working in any sort of multi-channel sound.

Any help on the audio issues would be much appreciated.

My Denon 4306 takes the PS3's HDMI signal and automaticly switches to the Multi Channel Input. Though this is not the ideal way to watch movies, it is the only way to get digital sound from Resistance Fall of Man, since optical wont pass the sound from this game. It does sound great though. It's just a pain to switch the menus (PS3 and 4306) to switch to optical so the Denon can use its processors. Man I wish my Denon had v1.3.........

I have a few questions regarding the Sony KDS-R60XBR2 SXRD HDTV and also the Playstation 3.

1. The Sony HDTV is widescreen. The playstation 3 games play in HD. If I were to play a HD PS3 game on a Sony KDS-R60XBR2 HDTV, it would be widescreen and fill the screen, right? But what if I had a regular 4:3 TV? PS3 would still play it, right? Would it have to have black bars on the top and bottom, or can the PS3 automatically work for both 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratio?

2. The Sony KDS-R60XBR2 upconverts everything to 1080p. Some PS3 games say on the back that they support full 1080p. But some others say that they support 480i, 720p, and 1080i. First of all, the game that says supports 1080p, also supports 480i too, right? Second, if I have a game that says "Supported HD video output: 480p, 720p, 1080i", will it automatically play in 1080i since my tv is strong enough? Do I select it or is it auto or something else?

3. Also, similar to # 2, since the Sony KDS-R60XBR2 upconverts everything to 1080p, it would still be better to get a game thats 1080i, then 720p or 480p, right? Even though the TV upconverts the 480p image into 1080p, the 1080i converted to 1080p would be better, right?

So, to sum things up, I'm just confused about how PS3 will show widescreen and/or full screen. And also about the resolution and how the Sony upconverts.

Any info regarding this would be greatly appreciated!

Thank You!

BTW - I've been reading the above posts and I'm worried regarding the PS3 working with the Sony KDS-R60XBR2. I was planning on getting the TV this week. Those of you that have this TV and PS3, how is it? Is it working ok and is the PQ really good?

That would all depend on the resolution you use: 480i/480p can be either 4:3 fullscreen or 16:9 widescreen ratio. 720p and 1080i are both 16:9 widescreen ratios and would appear with black bars on top/bottom on a 4:3 tv, or "fullscreen" on a 16:9 widescreen tv like the one you're looking at.

2. The Sony KDS-R60XBR2 upconverts everything to 1080p. Some PS3 games say on the back that they support full 1080p. But some others say that they support 480i, 720p, and 1080i. I believe the PS3 will be able to DOWNSCALE graphics, but not upscale (from what it sounds like). Meaning a 720p game will play in 720p, 480p, or 480i.. but can't upscale to 1080i/1080p (but if you have a 1080i/1080p tv that accepts 720p, it will upscale it).

Unfortunately it sounds like you need to select your resolution in the PS3 Menu.. so if you select 1080i and play a 720p game you'll need to exit the game and readjust your resolution to 720p (or it will be downscaled)

People have always fought about the 720p or 1080i issue regarding which is better.. I don't think theres a definitive answer on which is better. 720p should be smoother while 1080i should be higher resolution.
And yes, 480p upscaled to 1080p will not be anywhere near as nice as 1080i upscaled to 1080p. Since the TV would only output that resolution.. it cant add information (as an example, if it outputs 480 lines.. the tv can't magically add the extra 600 that are present in a 1080i output)

I hope this makes sense - I dont have my PS3 yet but thats how I've heard everything works.

I can confirm that before I was able to fix my HDMI issue, I had mine set to 1080i, and both Resistance and the Motostorm Demo both downscaled to 480p (Both are native 720p games). When I could get my 1080p to display correctly (see my post above), both of these titles did remain in Widescreen HD, which seems that it will upscale, but it must remain in progressive mode throughout the whole process.

Guys...concerning the issue of 720p games not upscaling to 1080i, can someone post an e-mail address to PS3 customer support so that AVS members can mass e-mail Sony about this problem, and hopefully if enough people do it we can expedite a resolution.

I did personally check all the paperwork and manuals that came with my PS3, but there was no e-mail listed for customer service. There is a phone number which is: 1-800-345-7669 in case anyone would prefer to call.

Edit: I came up with this link on the Playstation website for customer support in case someone would like to give it a try:

The connection for HDMI on the PS3 can get loose very easily and you lose picture.

This was probably what was happening to me as it happens often now. Even a slight shake from your sub-woofer on the TV stand can cause the hdmi to disconnect.

The PS3 is the only device on the market that has HDMI 1.3 so no no display has 1.3 yet. You can connect to any HDMI port it doesn't matter what version as far as connection goes.

As far as HDMI and Fiber Optic, if you have a HDMI reciever then you don't use fiber optic. If you don't have an HDMI reciever then you have to use optic to get digital surround from the PS3

My post on the first page states I tried a HDMI-DVI adapter and the sparklies are all gone at 1080p now. Perhaps it could be inconvenient for you, but it's a proven workaround IME.

Is this a known problem or is something wrong with the ps3?

hey all

i'm using a sony kdl-v32xbr1
connected through hdmi
runs flawlessly, i've played resistance for hours and hours so far and i can't complain
i haven't had any of the problems i've read about (knock on wood)
haven't had a chance to play talladega nights or any other blu-ray dvd or standard dvd for that matter..i'll post again when i get a chance to do so

It seems that the PS3 doesn't automatically switch based on the game content's resolution. I tried hooking the PS3 up to my XBR960 via HDMI and resistance would output at 480p when the XMB was set to 1080i. I had to manually switch the XMB to 720p in order for the game to output 720p. This also goes for the Motorstorm demo. On the other hand, when I had the XMB set to 720p and put in the Talladega Nights BD, the PS3 automatically switched to 1080i when the disc started playing.

37w3-flashing screen and no signal, turn off the tv and turn it back on and it seems to work.

i have this problem, i was wondering is this something that could be fixed with a firmware update? or is this something that will always happen no matter what?

JVC HD-61FN97: (rear projection HD-ILA, with I believe has the latest HDMI 1.3 support)

With the PS3 hooked up to the HDMI:
- 1080p works with no problems
- 720p work with no problems
- 480p (might be i... whatever is used when booting PS2 games) I get a flashing input and the TV never synchs. If I switch from the HDMI cable to the PS3's composite cable then I can see these 480i games fine.

With my cable box hooked up via HDMI 1080i, 720p, and 480i all work with no problems. (The cable box does not upscale these in my setup)

It seems odd that it is having problems with 480p, but not the higher resolutions...

Westinghouse 37w3 and ps3 gets non stop picture flashing when the ps3 changes resolutions. Turning the TV off then on will fix it. Anyone know how these are doing with the SXRD A2000's?

Will using an HDMI to DVI converter work as a workaround until this is fixed?

I called Sony's Technical Support line yesterday to talk to them about the flashing when trying to run 1080p over HDMI from the PS3 into my Westinghouse LVM-37W3. The representative said that this is the first that she had heard of this problem. She put me on hold and asked another representative and he had also never heard about this.

When talking to Westinghouse about this they suggested I wait for a firmware update for the PS3 that will fix the issue.

If you guy's are having problems with your Westy's at 1080p over HDMI, call Sony and let them know! If we raise awareness of the problem perhaps we will see it resolved in the form of a firmware update sooner.

Accordint to Felgar, PS3 ignores EDID data. So, you can bet your problem comes from this.

I think it would be useful to mention the cable make and length, since all HDMI cables are not made the same. If the same TV is giving different results, the TV and PS3 are the common ground here, so that leaves the cable as a possible issue right?

Westinghouse 37W1 here. It doesn't have HDMI ports, however I am using an HDMI-DVI cable, so I guess it applies to this thread.

All resolutions work correctly, however when switching video sources (XMB, Blu-Ray, Game, etc) it sometimes loses sync and I get a jumbled up screen. The easiest fix I found was to just barely unplug the cable and then plug it back in, it's worked every time for me so far.

HDMI-DVI cable is made by RCA and is 6ft long.

I can now confirm that the PS3 functions beautifully using a Pioneer PDP-4270HD via HDMI. No problems at all.

The lack of 1080p/24 support is disappointing (as the TV supports it), but at 1080i, the TVs internal processing does an amazing job and produces an incredibly crisp and clean image.

I retract my statements before about HDMI. Seems like the cable I was using was garbage. I figured if it's got a thick coating and 3 meters long, it would be an excellent cable. Well low and behold. I tried a 6 meter cable that's twice as thin and now my ps3 goes through HDMI with no issues! Go figure!

Westinghouse LVM-47W1 has the same handshaking problem as some other westy models. About 1/4 of the time, when the PS3 starts up or changes video mode or when the input is selected on the TV, everything works perfectly. But about 3/4 of the time, it doesn't handshake properly and the screen will enter an endless cycle of turning on and off. I've found that a temporary solution is to just switch away from the HDMI input and switch back -- repeat until it works. Turning the TV off and on, or unplugging and replugging the HDMI cable, can fix it too. Once it does initialize properly, it continues to work fine for hours.

This happens on all video modes, although I think it happens more on some modes than others.

I've tried two PS3s, two HDMI cables (different lengths), and two 47w1 TVs, so it's not a hardware or cabling problem.

When I talked to Westinghouse this past weekend they said they'd look into it.
When I talked to Sony they said they had never heard of such a problem.

I'm using an HDMI-DVI cable on my parent's 37" Westinghouse while I'm home on leave and it's working fine. Other than an occasional sync issue which requires that I unplug the cable slightly and plug it back in.

As long as you've went into the menu and switched to HDMI and then accepted it within 30 seconds, it SHOULD work. Perhaps something to do with your projector, is it HDCP (I don't know if that matters or not for sure)?

Yea, it supports HDCP. I tried a shorter DVI cable with the adapter and nada. Excellent. I can't believe it's not working. I ended up going to Fry's and picking up some PS2 component cables for use in the mean time.

I have my PS3 connected to my Pioneer PRO-1000HD, which supports all HD resolutions, including 720p, 1080i and 1080p on component inputs, but lacks HDMI. I played a BD version of "Memento" sync'd with the standard DVD version (on a separate DVD player). As I expected (due to HDCP), the PS3 output a 1080i signal over the component cables, whereas my DVD player outputs 480p (progressive upscaling from the 480i source).

BUT.....

My visual impression is that there is NO DIFFERENCE apparent in the images, e.g. it appears that the PS3 is upscaling from a 480i source, not downscaling from a 1080p source. Can this be possible? What resolutions are present on a Blu-Ray Disc?

(NOTE: the Pioneer plasma doesn't have native 1080 physical resolution; it has 768 lines, I believe. So there another level of scaling being done internally in the Pioneer, which has always been excellent. Certainly 1080i images sent OTA or via Cable TV look stunning compared to 480p, hence my total disappointment in what I am seeing from the PS3 playing BD. Something doesn't seem right!)

Greetings everyone. I've got a Westinghouse LVM-42w2, version 1.16. I've got my PS3 (v 1.10) hooked up via a 3' HDMI cable from Monoprice. I only seem to be getting 1920x540 resolution on my Blu-Ray movies. I've got the settings on the PS3 to HDMI (under the 'video output settings'), but it says the current output resolution is only 720p (maybe this is just how it is on the XNB). However, when I pop in a Blu-Ray DVD it still only gets 1080i. What am I missing here? I haven't found any other menu option that would make any difference in this. Any help is appreciated. :)

Copyright-protected Blu-ray video discs can only be output at 1080p using an

Anyone see any quick blast of static when switching resolutions? What about an occasional black out (lasting about 3 seconds)?

Both of these things have occured on occasion and I'm thinking it might be HDMI. I do not believe the PS3 is at fault, however. I was downloading a demo today and stopped back during lunch to try it. I simply turned my TV off (while downloading), but immediately upon powering the TV back on, I got that quick burst of static. The PS3 itself was just sitting there at the "Installation complete" screen, so it's not as if it did anything on its own. Seems like an HDMI issue. The black outs (I've only seen it happen twice) only seem to occur if I've seen that static during a session (occurs when switching resolutions). It doesn't happen often, but it is something I'm curious about.

Westinghouse customer support has been very helpful. Aaron from Westinghouse just called me a few minutes ago. Apparently Sony contacted them to let them know that this is actually a hardware problem with the HDCP chip in some PS3s, and it's not a problem with the monitor. Aaron also said that they've gotten calls from customers who don't see this problem at all with the PS3 and Westinghouse TVs. I haven't talked to Sony yet so I don't know if this is something that could be fixed with a firmware update, or if I'll have to replace the PS3.

Like I posted a few pages ago in this very thread, this is an HDCP handshaking issue and is easily fixed.

All you have to do is hold the power button for 5 seconds when you turn on your PS3 (you'll hear a "beep" to confirm it). Select "Yes" when it asks you if you'd like to output both Video and Audio via HDMI. Then, if you are outputting sound with a regular optical or analog cables, you can go to the sound options under "Audio Settings" and change it to whatever you need. Voila, no more flickering.

This fixes the flickering problem/handshaking issue on this set whether you use an HDMI cable or an HDMI to DVI cable. Keep in mind that DVI 1 on the LVM-37w3 does not support HDCP so you will not get an image at all with this input, you must use the HDMI or DVI 2 input.

That made no difference for me. I pressed the power button for 5 seconds, it beeped a second time and then (on the HDMI input) I saw the screen where it asks if I want to output video and audio via HDMI. At that screen and during the following screens, and continuing for as long as HDMI selected, the screen blinks in and out. All that power button trick seems to be is a way to get HDMI working if your TV can't use the composite cables the PS3 comes with.

I was unclear -- he said that when customers call with other questions regarding the PS3 and Westy TVs, he asks them if they see the same problem I'm seeing, and people have said no, that aspect is working just fine.

Anyway, I managed to test this on a third PS3 that came from a different store -- still the exact same problem. So I don't know if I believe that this is an isolated hardware problem, unless it's fairly common. I'll talk to Sony tomorrow.

Have a problem with a Westy 27w1. Without buying a HDMI switcher and DVI adapter, I'm forced to go component in and the tv will not accept the signal at all (1080i).

I'm feeding all my source components into a VP50 and going out HDMI to my projctor (Z4) and taking the component out (VP50) to the Westy. The TV is supposed to handle 720p but will not accept it from the VP50 via component, wonder if the Westy needs DVI to display 720p. I have to set the output to 1080i from the VP50. Luckily I had component cables from my PS2 and it works (PS3) on both systems. Just unfortunate that I can't run HDMI. Would be nice if I can switch the PS3 on the fly, run HDMI on pj and component on TV without manually switching. Oh well, mabe in the future when they fix the 1080i issue I'll be alble to run just HDMI.

On a side note. Last night was my first experience with the PS3. So far, I'm underwhelmed...

Aaron from Westinghouse just called me a few minutes ago. Apparently Sony contacted them to let them know that this is actually a hardware problem with the HDCP chip in some PS3s, and it's not a problem with the monitor ... I haven't talked to Sony yet so I don't know if this is something that could be fixed with a firmware update, or if I'll have to replace the PS3.
Just talked to Sony. After half an hour with the first level tech, I eventually got a supervisor on the line who basically said they haven't heard any acknowledgement of this problem and they haven't heard of any hardware issues on the PS3, and that there was nobody else I could talk to to get more information. Useless.

Yesterday I downloaded the new v1.11 firmware for the PS3 and tried using HDMI again on my Westy LVM-37W3. What I found is that when changing resolutions now I am only getting one re-sync instead of a continual constant re-sync like before.

Have others who were having problems with their Westy's see similar results after downloading the new update?

I've got PS3 displaying 1080p through HDMI on my HP DLP. So far I've watched 2 BD movies as well as some 1080p trailers. During both movies (and twice during trailers), the image has gone out for about 3-5 seconds. This has happened just 1 time during each movie (Silent Hill and TN). It appears that the HDMI signal is losing its connection for some reason. I'm using the $7 HDMI cables from Monoprice. The connectiona to the PS3 and the TV are secure. My PS3 is currently connected to HDMI input 1. I haven't tried switching to input 2 as I feel that won't make a difference. Anyone else experience this? Is it possible I have a bad cable? Thanks for any input. Also note I haven't experienced this with any games, demos, or the XMB (also running in 1080p).

Have others who were having problems with their Westy's see similar results after downloading the new update?Nope, the 1.11 didn't help me.

But: I got a HDMI to DVI adapter, put it on DVI2, and now my LVM-47w1 works fine! No re-syncs at all. I hadn't tried that before because the guys at Westinghouse agreed that it shouldn't make a difference.

The factory default brightness levels seem off compared to the HDMI input, but that's easily adjustable. Of course, there's no more digital audio with this connection, but at least the video works correctly!

Ok so far my SONY 46XBR2 works just great, i love it !

although i have another problem, the 46" is the main living room tv, i need another tv set which is able to go 1080p and which works good with the ps3, and has decent PQ.
Does anyone know of anything between 1500-2000 dollars? in the 37-42" range?

So does the PS3 HDMI v1.3 interface work with older versions such as 1.0, 1.1 or 1.2 ?

As I understood HDMI v1.3 was supposed to be backwards compatable. The main difference as I understood it, was that they improved the audio sampling or something, but if you are using the HDMI for video only and are using optical out for audio it shouldn't matter right?

I have a Viewsonic N3260w and I can't tell what version of HDMI it has?

I've been having the same problem many of you have.

While watching a blueray of Mission Impossible the picture went green as if I was looking through night vision gogles. A few moments later it was ok. Then the picture went completely black. Again after a few moments it came back. Turning the TV on and off solves the problem.

I tried pressing the power button for 5 seconds and auto-config but even after I did that it's still having the same problems.

Sony is replacing my unit, but I have a feeling I will be running into the same issue.

I just bought a Samsung LNS3251D as well as an HDMI cable from monoprice, which I hear are very reliable.

I received the cable last night and set everything up. Picture displayed correctly, sound was great, etc.

However, upon booting up the Motorstorm demo, the screen turns to fuzz and I hear a crackling noise from the speakers for 2-5 seconds before the game boots up like normal and everything displays perfectly. The same things happens for Resistance as well. Watching downloaded videos, however, goes without a single hitch.

Other message boards tell me this is a normal issue with some TVs and I know people with the same TV as me who do have the same problem, but I also know people who do not have any issues at all.

Basically, I just want a little more reassurance that there is nothing wrong with my system, TV, or cable. Also, is there a way to improve this issue?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Samsung HLR6168 is working great with HDMI. Blu-ray 1080i looks great (Tears of the Sun). Resistance looks great at 720p. Audio separate through digital audio to receiver. Sounds great!

Samsung HLR-6178 works great too! This is basically the same TV as the 6168.

For those interested, 1080p doesn't work via HDMI or Component inputs... but it isn't supposed to on this TV.

Ok I just try the method of holding the ps button 5 seconds. Then it asks me if I want to output my video and audio thru hdmi. When I was at this screen, my tv aleady flicker. Finish the whole process. Watch and play some game and movie download and my tv flicker once again. Now WSYEGUY said this method fix his problem. He has the same exact tv as me.

So with the facts.. I think the problem has nothing to do with the ps3 or HDCP, but it may have to do with the hdmi cable that I'm using from cheap ass monoprice website. My bro order another cheap hdmi cable from other website. So when we get that hdmi cable. I'm gonna use it and see if this will fix the problem.

So I dunno.

No, that will NOT work at all. HDMI is digital only, it won't have the analog signal(s) required to convert from DVI-I(analog) to component.

Just get the PS2/PS3 (same) component cable. $10 at Target.com

Wait, so just to clarify what was stated, the PS3 will play all Blu-Ray movies in 1080i? Does anyone know how one can see what the PS3 is outputing in while it is playing a movie?

I've been going back and forth between 720p and 1080i, and I think scene motion is better on 720p, though quality PQ is slightly better at 1080i. Is this noticability a placebo effect?

Also, I read that the PS3 doesn't upscale regular DVDs. I notice that my upscaling DVD Player does a better job than the PS3 at playing regular DVDs. How do I check the latest firmware and is there anyway for me to update firmware via USB? I have 20GB version and ethernet is unaccesible.

Yes i called their Dell tech support, dude said u will not get 1080p from HDMI to DVI on this monitor since their DHCP does not support it. (i wonder if it even has any sort of DHCP support to begin with... i doubt it, it was probably all garbage out by the sales rep i talked to from dell when i purchased this monitor. I got this monitor 2 months ago, and i love it, don't get me wrong, but this really rubs me the wrong way lol , i wanted to play BluRay/HD-DVD content on this monitor)

When i try to play a movie it looks worse than a normal standard dvd. the resolution is horrible.

I used the HDMI to DVI cable, games at 1080p work fine with the Monitor.

Call them today and ask about HDMI to DVI and bluRay movies, at 1080p, and if the DHCP is working on that monitor, if i was you i'd return this monitor and get the gateway 24 inch monitor, same specs, and you can view 1080p content from a bluRay player, or HD-DVD player, since it is HDCP compliant.

I also noticed that the HDCP support from the dell.com site has been removed, but if you search for some other 2407 sites, non US based , you will find HDCP support mentioned, even in the Press release, and the UK dell site.

I agree with Jerz. Since it is a true digital signal either it comes through or it doesn't. In other words, if the cable doesn't work you'll get a bunch of jaggies and if it works the picture will work beautifully. I've bought from monoprice b4 and their products are good.

Think of these cables as copper wires (maybe platted in gold) wrapped by plastic, you shouldn't find it too hard to understand the price. IMHO, some prices of the Monster cables are just ripoffs: they are after all mass-produced, not hand-crafted.

OK, here's my setup, my problem and my temporary solution:
Westinghouse LVM42w2, Menu shows software version 1.16
PS3 20G, Software upgraded to v1.10

I first bought an HDMI-HDMI cable, and PS3 was able to detect up to 720p not 1080p, I was able to force it to1080p but got flicking images and snow flakes on edges of objects in the image

Then I read this post and bought an HDMI-DVI cable, now it was able to detect 1080p and worked fine for most of the time. But screen went dark from time to time when switching resolutions, showing a frozen dark screen with a horizontal green line (with some other color dots) across the screen, the PS3 was still running at that time and it would recover if I switch off and back on the LCD. Sine my computer has never had such problem with the LCD before, I would say it is still a software issue on PS3 side.

what we talking about is "flickering" on the screen using hdmi. that is called "handshake."

I'd assume that if the component cables are bad that a correct 1080i signal would not be possible, but it can display 1080i and 480p correctly, just not 720p. With that knowledge in mind, do you still think it's a bad component cable?

I have tried hold down buttons for 5 seconds, and the A/V screen indicates that the PS3 has detected a HDMI device and upon select, I switched to the HDMI channel, and only get blank screen.
Also I tested the Audio settings and tried to use HDMI, there is no sound coming out of the LCD TV.

Dude, no offense, but you're gonna have to grasp some basic video ideas.

First: composite is the worst video right now, S-video is the next worst, then component then DVI/HDMI. To answer your question, you want HDMI or component on your t.v.

So go to Sony's web site and find out which you have for your t.v. Hopefully, you are component and you can hook up your component connections. Otherwise, it is time for you to buy a new T.V.

Good Luck!

I am pissed.Got my ps3 today and set it up and experienced the 1080p HDMI problem that everyone else is having with the 42 inch westinghouse. My firmware is 1.16 and same thing when set to 1080p it flickers and sometimes freezes on a static screen. When it does work I get the snow effects on images.

I then tried to hook it up to DVI1 with a hdmi converter and it will not flicker but when going in and out of the game and the ps3 menu it will sometimes get stuck on a black screen with a static bar going across the middle. .

I then tried to hook it up to DVI2 then see a white lines pop up on the left and right sides of the screen. It's like the very edge of the borders have a tiny thin white static line. When I unplug the dvi its ok but once the connection is made and even though the system is not on the white edges come up. I also tried it with DVI from my cable box same problem on DVI2. DVI1 is fine though.

Can anyone confirm the DVI 2 issue also? I am going to call Westing house tomorrow again. I called 3 months ago to report the lockup issue the TV has and they said would get back to me on updating the firmware. Anyone have suggestions on things to say to them to speed things up?

I finally had time to crack open my box and I'm using the westy 37in display. It doesn't seem to like my television but thanx to the posts here I am able to get it working. The guy from Sony support told me to get a hdmi cable that is more compliant with hdmi 1.3 but after connecting it to my front projector it worked fine. This is really frustrating because they should test these things more before release. Sony should learn from Microsoft's mistakes. Still after about five minutes you get sound and video. I believe it has alot to do with the auto sync feature built into the westy. I will test my theory and let you guys and gals know how it turned out.

See my comment at #148, you're having exactly the same problem as mine and we have the same firmware version for westy 42in. Quick solution is whenever you see a static line across the screen, turn the monitor off then on, it will back to normal. I'm not sure which side is causing the problem though, Sony or Westy?

Let's ask neutral studios to re-encode separately for 50 GB BD titles instead of using the HD encode. The PQ improvement should be noticable.

Big Kahana,
The PS3 can attempt to auto-detect, but you really need to know the specs.
Rule of thumb is to use the highest quality connection your display has.

1. HDMI / DVI
2. Component
3. S-Video
4. Composite

You will not get a HD image if you can only do Composite or S-Video.

I should get a call soon per Thad from IAI. Hopefully the firmware upgrade will fix some of the issues.

No, that TV is a standard definition model and will not display anything higher than 480i. There are plenty of SDTVs available with component inputs, so it's not as if that is a rare feature. You were right to order those component cables, however, as even an SDTV sees a massive boost in image quality when using component instead of composite.

it has nothing to do with money, dark1x.

s-video is the highest quality SD connection out there.

component is made for much higher resolutions and doesn't give a nice crisp picture like s-video does for SD viewing.

Please tell me you are you confusing comPOSITE with comPONENT or something.

Component (Y/Cr/Cb) is quite superior to S-video (Y/C), even for standard-def. This is fact. It is not debateable.

I figured this was the best area to post this..so here it goes.

I recently purchased an HDMI capable capture card which supports HD resolutions. I did this primarily for capturing recordings of High Definition Video Games off the PS3 for my site. Unfortunately now that I've received my PS3 I have found that HDCP is enabled even when playing games. I was under the impression it was only to be used on Blu-ray movies. Needless to say this really really sucks. I've blown a lot of money on this and I really would appreciate it if someone here could recommend a work around for this.

I realize I could use component via a component>hdmi adapter however I'd like to use the PS3's native HDMI out as I could have bought a component capture card for far less.

Is there perhaps a box which will strip the HDCP signal? As far as I can see this is the only work around I can find.

Well, just to chime in, technical, a component connection should give a better picture. If he could set the output of the device to display 480p and not 480i, then it will be more noticeable. If you are only passing 480i using S-video or Component, there would be a difference but small, and actually some folks probably wouldn't notice it.

If you really want to debate this issue, the experts are all in the Display Calibration forum, that's if you want to take advice from a Canadian.

As a matter of fact, I used to own the 27" version of that exact model Sony WEGA, so I think I know a little bit about what it can do ...

It won't accept 480p. But it should look better with component/480i anyway.

Set the PS3 for 480i output. If that model WEGA has the 16:9 (aka "squeeze") mode you can even try widescreen on the PS3, see if you like it.

I've confirmed that 720p only works properly on the Westinghouse LTV-32W1 using a HDMI to DVI connection, but yields a rough and jagged 1080i signal using this method. On the other hand, a clean 1080i signal can be achieved using component cables, but will yield wavy lines when set to 720p.

my wife picked up a PS3 20GB for my son for Christmas and I want to make sure I can set it all up properly. My setup currently-

Pana TH-50PHD8UK
HR10-250 STB via HDMI blade
Oppo DVD via DVI blade
Sony AV receiver via component (the STB,DVD, and VCR are into the receiver for audio, and VCR through receiver video)

I understand that the PS3 has HDMI output only so what would be better-
buy a new receiver (big$) that has HDMI in/out? (don't want to do this)
buy a hdmi to dvi cable and a 2 way dvi switch?
buy a hdmi cable and a 2 way hdmi switch?

I also think my Sony receiver has only 2 optical audio inputs which are being used for the DVD and STB right now so audio is a concern also. I think what I need is a 2 in, 1 out HDMI WITH 2 in, 1 out optical audio switch, but I can't find one yet.

I have a Panasonic TH-50PX600U connected to my PS3 60-gig version via HDMI. I am outputting 1080p from my PS3 and have had no issues. My set does not officially support 1080p according to Panasonic, but I am having no current issues. The picture is a bit bright, but admittedly, I have yet to calibrate my set at all. I only have two Blu-Ray movies (Taledaga Nights and Underworld 2). My only game for the PS3 is Resistance (and after getting through GoW on the X360, this game is hard for me to get into). But no issues with Resistance either when running at 720p.

My Onkyo TX-SR804 shall arrive today so I will be doing switching of all my video sources through the receiver. All in all I am very happy with the PS3 and look forward to adding to my Blu-Ray collection.

Ok everyone its my time to post now. I have a PS3 60GB Model that is currently connected to a 37" 37w3 Westy, and a Z5500 5.1 Surround Sound System.
The 5.1 Surround system is fully THX certified, and works without any issues. ( Very pleased ) The Westy on the other hand is one heck of a display for its price, but kind of leaves me with this question? The HDMI issue ( which btw I am also experiencing ) is kind of anoying. Which leaves me to belive that the Westy is at fault here. What I also noticed is when I slightly touch the cable in the back of the PS3 I loose the HDMI authentication, and I get a blinking black screen.
Another thing I relaized is that when jumping from 1080p XMB and then to a 1080p source like a game or BD, it works fine. When I launch Resistance, or Motorstorm demo, I get an authentication issue. Sometimes I don't have this issue. Strange right?

The Westy is v1.5, PS3 has v 1.30 installed ( which I hoped that would fix this issue ), and the receiver is capable of COAXIAL and OPTICAL.

GW-SMOkeY
12-07-06, 04:35 PM
As I am typing this from the PS3, I want to mention that I belive this issue has to do with the software vs. hardware.

I am using the cheapest 28awg Cable from Monoprice. I wonder if the 24awg HDMI cable w/ Netjacket is better?

What I do know is that this issues is non existant when connected via component cables. Which leaves me to belive it is either the cable, or a possible software fix?

My simplest solution for this issue curently is; jumping inputs ( ie: from HDMI to Any other Input, then back to HDMI - works! ) or turning the monitor on and off.

This leaves two questions, and they are:
1. Have you tried touching the cable on the back of the PS3, and do you loose your HDCP authentication?
2. 37w3 Owners with v1.6 do you experience this issue?

It's connected to my 20GB PS3 and have no problem displaying 1080i, 720p, and 480p.
It flickers for a half second with digital snow when switching resolutions, but that seems normal to me. Usually inbetween the loading of a game from the XMB to the disc.

I hooked my PS3 up to a 57" Sony WV700 rp-hdtv. It accepts 1080i and 720p signals, but converts a 720p signal to 1080i. Using a hdmi to dvi converter plug, this setup works fine. I get a 1080i (720p converted) signal that looks good. I still may hook it up to my panny plasma to see if there is much of a difference, as sometimes the grain of a rptv gets to me.

Yes, you can use the PS2's component or AV (S-Video and Composite) cables on the PS3 - I have confirmed this on my 20G PS3 and Samsung 6178.

Please let us know what you find is better on your setup - component, composite, or S-video. I'm sure that there are readers who would like to know.

have recently upgraded to both HD-DVD (TOSH XA1) and BLU-RAY via the PS3. the HLM617W is I guess 2 or 3 generation DVI, works excellent with HD-DVD at 720P. 1080i is just too fuzzy to watch...Picture quality is amazing...I did have my set calibrated by ISF.

The problem is with the PS3. It wants to output at 1080i, when playing a bluray movie at 720P there's a frame around the entire picture. If I go to 1080i, the picture fills the screen, but has that annoying flicker that is non-existent with HD-DVD.

Any ideas? I did try and scan around to see if others are experiencing this...

I had a ISF Calibrator come to my house and do it pro .... it was worth it.

They can charge anything they want I guess..... you have to find one in your area or someone who travels to do this stuff and then ask them.......

Do you own the Sony KDS-R60XBR2? I have been doing research on TVs for months and I hope to buy that TV very soon. I also own the PS3. How do you like the TV? Does the PS3 work and look good on it?

Thanks
I have the 70" XBR2 & I can tell you my 2 favorite PS2 games (Gran Turismo 4 & God Of War) rock on it!
I can't wait to try the PS3 on it!

Sorry if this is a known issue, I couldn't find anything specific on my TV model.

I just got the Westinghouse 32w6 today and tried to hook up my PS3 through HDMI. However, when I switch the PS3 settings so that it should move over to HDMI nothing happens.

I have it plugged in through HDMI and composite, so on startup it shows a screen asking if I want to connect through HDMI instead and I choose yes. Then the screen goes black (it looks like it is trying to switch over to HDMI) but then nothing happens. Anyone know more about this?

IMO the only TV I would consider right now is the SXRD.

The LCDs are just not there yet and DLPs still have trails/rainbows on fast motion.

After spending about 4 hours looking at all the new sets at 3 different stores, with different sources (HD store feed, HD satellite, direct Bluray feed, and PS3) I came home and watched my "old" 46" CRT-RP on HD cable.

WOW what a difference. "Natural" is the way I'd describe the picture. Now I know a store floor with the sets on "torch mode" is not the best way to audition a TV, but I did spend a few minutes adjusting the picture modes on a couple of the sets ("warm" color, turn off sharpness, etc) but they still didn't compare to my good old CRT. Yeah it's a giant piece of furniture and you have to sit in the "sweet spot" but it's the picture that matters after all...

I'm sure I'd be happy with the SXRD, the picture is nice and the prices are good on the A2000 sets ($2100 for the 50"), but BOY would I be unhappy if I had just dropped $4000 on a 46" 1080p LCD and the picture is WORSE then my CRT...

Please forgive my ignorace, but I have a question..

If a set is 1920x1080 on a 32" monitor, then the same res on a 60" would equal larger pixels and thus a more blocky look?

AmigaDude
12-11-06, 09:58 PM
StrikeKing - Technically, the answer is YES. However, the thing about TV's (versus a PC monitor) is that you are not usually looking at the same text patterns, where it easily shows blockiness. In the usual motion filled DVD, or video game, your perception would probably not notice any major difference.

That said, I find a HDTV to be a very personal choice and nothing compares to visiting your local stores to see it in person.

Just my 2cents...

You may want to double check on that, since I've read that Resistance runs at 720p and will ONLY degrade to 480p if you can't support 720p. It cannot upscale to 1080i no matter which interface you use.

Motorstorm, on the other hand, MAY support 1080i at least I hope so. Why do you switch to component out?

One thought - make sure that you go into Display Settings and choose only those resolutions that your TV supports. It would probably help to do the TEST option on each one while you are looking at the options.

ARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Welp, I am a bit dissappointed. The Onkyo TX-SR804 arrived last week along with my speakers. And after doing an initial setup where the connections are as follows: PS3>Onkyo TX-SR804>Panasonic TH-50PX600U I am running into issues with what can be described as jitter!!! That is the video and audio feeding from the PS3 into the Onkyo TX-SR804 drops in and out when output for the PS3 is set at 1080p!!!!

ARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

I have tried replacing the HDMI cables and still the same problem exists. When I set the PS3's output to 1080i and lower, all is fine. Dreams of doing 1080p HDMI switching at my receiver are now lost. I am not quite sure if my Onkyo is defective, my cables suck, or there are just some now emergent issues between HDMI 1.1 (my Onkyo) and HDMI 1.3 (the PS3).

The only silver lining is that my Panny plasma's native resolution isn't 1080p, so any video gets scaled back to 1366x768 anyway. So I am going to be running the PS3 at 1080i instead of 1080p. As I have just picked up the Onkyo, I still see myself upgrading next year when the HDMI 1.3 models come out anyway. I say this because I look forward to the days of listening to lossless multi-channels surround sound.

As there are no issues with jitter when connecting the PS3 directly to the Panasonic TH-50PX600U, I can only conclude that this issue is the fault of the Onkyo TX-SR804 (there is a slight possibility that this may be due to my cheap cables). Going to check the receiver forum to see if any similar issues have been encountered. Be informed, be very informed.

So, If one uses the HDMI>HDMI connection as I do currently, and the auto-set has put the PS3 at 1080i output, will the Westy upscale BD movies to 1080p and will games like Resistence be output at 720p?

What about a game like NBA 07, which is run at 1080p?

Hi Stan, I'm the owner of this set too - glad to hear it about the HDMI>DVI. What about my previous question, do you know the answer?

Great set, but I hope Westy eventually fixes the HDMI problem. Its a big reason why I got the set - to match up with the PS3 HDMI. LOL

use the "menu" button and check, I would assume it will have no problems with other resolutions since 1080p works, but I haven't been forced to check.

This is very frustrating. I'm going to bb later to demand i get a tv that will do 1080p via hdmi

The 1.31 update came out today and it will fix your problem

I have the same issue.

I bought the PS3 primarily for the 1080P (Blu ray functionality) but am having 'hand shake' issues (grainy screen, flickering) when I put it to 1080P through my receiver (Denon AVR 5805). When I connect the PS3 directly to the TV (HPMD6580) it works fine (but I lose the 7.1 audio improvement).

Anyone have any ideas?

I haven't updated the firmware yet, but these are my results:

Sharp Aquos 32" (Costco version)
Component cables (from ps2) works to 480p. Manual says, for games, will go up to 1080p. 720 is the max for my tv, and didn't allow it.

HDMI - green screen... everything was tinted green. I checked the hdmi version, and it says 1.3 in the manual. The TV, I think, is 1.1... but I'm upgrading in the next few days anyhow =P

I've been experiencing some minor color banding with my new Westy '37 W3. It's notable in grayish colors, especially in Resistence. Here's a video where you should be able to see the lines clearly (focus on the stairs).

http://rapidshare.com/files/8088204/MVI_8766.AVI.html

I'm trying to confirm if this is just a normal thing for the TV, or if it could be a problem with the system or TV. I don't experience this in more colorful games (Genji 2, Lemmings). I'm using an HDMI to HDMI cable from monoprice.

Are there any benefits to using HDMI to DVI over HDMI to HDMI? Would there be better picture quality, less, or the same?
