IMO they are. If your in the market for speakers, demo the field. I have found that speakers are normally a matter of personal taste. There are quite a few out there that are very good to great. What you need to do is find out what ones seem unbelievable to you.
Speakers are like women, when you find the right one you just know! ;)

HECK YEAH! I myself, was also busting ass this SUMMER season. Everyone else was getting thier partying-hooking up done. While I was working OT, which IMO paid off. However, I still managed to stay single :P

PS3 + 1080p LCD + Z5500's = HEAVEN... Now if only can find a girl that is into gaming, things would be all good. However, I will take someones advice "Not to get married, unitll i have the system of my dreams" LOL...

P.S All the homies, that partied/hooked - up envy my setup. They still can't belive I avoided summer for this ;)

Damn Viper98 what kinda camera do you have? The pics im getting from my Digi cam look really bad. I also hooked up my G25 wheel while playing GT HD man the game SERIOUSLY needs Force Feedback. There is no RESISTANCE AT ALL while playing drift mode with the G25 or any wheel for that matter, is pratically impossible!

Get with it Sony!

It just isn't the same and from what I hear Formula 1 will not have any Force Feedback either, friggin sucks!

Older components perhaps. But newer ones such as cable/satellite boxes, the PS3, the XBOX 360 run much hotter and are much more heat sensitive.

That's purty..... Do Power Centers/ Conditioners really aid in the overall strength of a system? I am considering one, but I just can't seem to understand the "benefit" behind them... I live in a large city, with ample power.... and for the most part my Hometheater system is totally digital..... So I see no actual need for one; except for bragging rights...

The main reason i picked that one up is because I got a good deal on it, refurbished, and I simply needed a good power strip to plug all those components in to one spot. I think I only paid 149.99 if i remember right. I think they are a decent investment though, they help with things like for instance if you are running the garbage disposal, hairdryer, or something that zaps a lot of power and causes interference on your tv, this interference will be prevented. They also offer an insurance policy on your equipment up to some rediculous amount of money, so if lightning strikes your house and any of your AV equipment gets damaged, the power conditioner manufacture will pay the repair/replacement costs.

Very nice room SOWK! I want to comment though on the dedicated theater room. I think in something like a family room it is important to be classy and tasteful with your decorations, which you have done very well with. However, I think the theater room is almost too decorated. One goal I've always had was to minimize distractions and decorations in the room so you can be completely immersed in the program. Things like the wall decorations and that little white statue under the center channel would only serve to distract me.

Don't get me wrong, I like both rooms, you've got great taste in decor, but I think the theater room is a little over-done in that aspect.

I totaly understand. I have done a lot to minimize it already

I may do even more.

The black boxes on each side of the speakers holds a lot of goddies as well, but I didn't like the Cluttered look, so I covered everything up.

I am planning on putting semi transparent black Glass in front of the Receiver/DVD/Head soon.

The little Metal figures above the projector will be going soon to be replaced by some dark wooden baskets that close.

The signs are now above the left and right seat. Not above the projector.

Also my Theater room gets blacker then black... lol. When the lights are out. No leds from any device are seen, and they is no way you can see the head.

Here is my setup. A 61" Samsung HL-S series DLP w/ an XBox 360 and PS3, hidden from each others view so they don't get jealous. I sit 11' back. The speakers are Energy brand, small yet loud and pleasing.

Nope. It's fixed. The center channel has three speakers so I did my best at making sure the bar is in between the 2nd and 3rd. I don't notice a difference from when I had it sitting on top of my CRT.

I would be interested in the progression you mentioned. I am starting out now, so some guidance would be much appreciated. I know I want to end up with the biggest X series I can afford, so I reckon your choices will work just fine for me =)

I only have about half my systems/setups that I have owned over the years. The other half is on a different computer. (too Lazy to get off the other computer)

I'm only 25, and accumulated the more advanced setups in the last 3 years.

Here is a progression from just over 3 years ago.

Crippler,

Nice to see another person hooking up an LPCM 7.1 channel home theater!

Can I ask what preamp/processor you're planning on using? Not many preamps have HDMI-inputs which accept and can properly decode 7.1-channels of LPCM. It's kinda hard (if not impossible) to find one right now.

Thanks for your advice. And I hope you really enjoy the hell out of it when you get everything set up!

Hi Rieper,

I picked up a brand new Denon 3806 from tweeters for about $800. The Denon will be used for all my HDMI needs until McIntosh releases there new preamp/processor early next year which will have HDMI ETC. The Denon has worked great so far.

...Can I ask what preamp/processor you're planning on using? Not many preamps have HDMI-inputs which accept and can properly decode 7.1-channels of LPCM...Correct me if I am wrong, but LPCM doesn't require any decoding, correct? Any decoding is done prior to the LPCM stream.

I should clarify...I meant to say processing.

In other words, taking a Blu-ray movie or PS3 game which has 5.1 PCM uncompressed track and processing it (or adding a matrix soundfield, ie. Dolby PXII, etc) and making it 7.1 channels. Not many receivers do this "processing". Most receivers just take the 5.1 PCM track over HDMI and leave it alone. This is a no-no for those owners who have a 7.1 speaker setups and can't use them on 5.1 PCM tracks.

I am very impressed with the very high end HT components we are priveleged to view from AVS members that own them, and think of it, the PS3 is making that a possiblity. We are exposed to equipment that we are learning more about and may one day acquire as improvements to our HT systems. It really is a pleasure. Thanks guys. :)

I had no choice it wouldn't fit vertically on the middle shelf. If I lay it flat then my Wii would have no room, and I can't put the 360 on top cuz the power cord isn't long enough. I had to rearrange my entire rack to accomodate the PS3!

It's an Omnimount stand I got from Circuit City for about $30. This TV has some depth in the back, which works pretty well for the rear legs of this stand... I don't think if it would work on a completely flat panel.

No, the shots look fine. One question, how do you like the insignia speakers? I had a pair but they just didn't do it for me. I ended up getting a set of BP7006's from Definitive Technologies to compliment my system.

Heat? As custom as this rack is I am more than sure that the rear of the unit has either cooling fans, or at least wide open space.....

My modest bedroom setup; as always a work in progress, not to mention it's my bedroom. Better wire concealment and a rack under the TV instead of to the side.... and cover those funky looking doors.

If your going to go to all that expense in buying the rack and custom fitting it into your home etc, why not just buy a standalone, that PS3 looks kinda silly in the rack like that. just my opinion though :)

It also shows shows why they need a USB port on the back. So you don't have to see an ugly USB cable coming out of the front like in the picture.

If you're going to take the time to set everything up to your liking, take a picture upload it and post it, why not take a picture that we don't all have to tilt our heads to view?

Well, the rack is never seen and it keeps my theater clean.

Then you could say the same thing about all the other components in my rack as each is on a custom shelf. Technically, if people rack things, they should be rack mountable components with rack ears. :)

As far as the whole rack, here's the image:

Heat? No problems as there is no component over it, and the sides and back are wide open.

I can see you have an LCD Monitor there - is that the Dell 24" LCD ? because I have the same monitor!!! And is that keyboard the Saitek Eclipse ? cause that's what I use too. but my PC is not in the living room. I just noticed your PC case is yellow and looks like X-Alien case ? I have the green X-Alien, it's a really nice case. Could it really be that we both have the same things ?!?!?!?!?

Update: I just noticed you have the Linksys WRT56G. I use that router as well !!!!!

P.S. I agree with the post below about you needing to take the sticker off the TV.....

P.S.2: Forgot to mention I have the same cable box as you. But I put it on the left side of the bottom shelf. JacobC1983

it uses wobulation to achieve 1080p..

While wobulation can in theory be used in many types of display devices, it is currently primarily used in displays using Digital Light Processing (DLP). DLP is a Texas Instruments (TI) technology which relies on a Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) chip. TI calls its implementation of wobulation 'SmoothPicture'. Horizontal wobulation used in current TI products allows a DMD chip with a 960x1080 mirror array to produce a 1920x1080 pixel picture. Also, the image overlap inherent in the use of wobulation eliminates the 'screen door' effect common on other fixed pixel displays such as plasma and LCD, but may in some implementations also create some reduction in sharpness.

You will want to get the 5088 model because then you can turn overscan permanently off but with the 87 model you have to enter the service menu every time you turn the TV off and back on to turn it off so that you can achieve 1:1 pixel mapping.

But there are some people with Harmony remotes that have found a way to include it as a code during start up that turns it off. See the owners thread. I just went with the 88 model.

My next set will be a 1080p 60" Pioneer Display. Their PQ is amazing.

I used to. I even used to have piranhas, except instead of rbps i kept caribe and even had a rhom for a while. Before I got out of the hobby, I was considering doing a DIY 900 gallon tank. Now all I have is a 180 that I'm letting a friend of mine borrow. You prolly already know this, but there are some pretty good forums out there, and a really good one for piranhas specifically. If you don't already know of them, shoot me a pm and I can guide you to them. They have some great info there.

Thanks guys! Just finished repainting the room to the chocolate color you see in the pics. There are some construction pics at the link in my sig. The room really isn't as long as it seems in the first pic. We used a wide angle lens and it has the fisheye look going on ;) Room is a finished attic area over the garage, 13x24x8.

Amazing what you guys are accomplishing in your homes, i think it's really overlooked that Home Theaters are becoming a necessity in homes, and that's freaking awesome.

Like this:

I think he said its the attic space over the garage
Many of the homes I design encorporate "attic trusses"
over the attached garage to be used as a bonus room

I've got some pretty slick CAD software that enables 3-d walk through animations
(in addition to producing working drawings, quantity take-offs for estimating, cut lists and bill of materials)

some on-line virtual walk throughs here:

clayfu, Piomaniac nailed your answer. It's just a finished attic area bonus room over my garage, so the slanted walls are the roofline. We bought the house with the room already built, I just went in and did the wiring and equipment to turn it into a home theater instead of using it as a bonus or game room.

scanido, the seats are Coaster Showtime collection recliners. I ordered them online, but for the life of me I can't remember from where right now. I got them for a great price, which was a little less than the Berklines. They are very comfortable and have a cupholder in each arm.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

The speakers are a pair of JonMarsh's DIY OB dipole Arvo Pärt trial versions. 2 Two 12"s, two 8"s, and a tweeter per speaker. The subs are also DIY. Each houses a 15" Dayton RS driver, and stands 78.5" tall. The idea was to have them look like columns, and not big@$$ subs. I have a thread here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=767106) at AVS on the subs.

Actually everything made of wood is DIY in that pic. The little boxes on each side of the AV stand house the Arvo's crossovers.

You can't really tell in the pic, but the PS3 is sitting on top of the PS2 in the bottom right compartment( the white cable is a USB extention cable ). Above that is the DVD player and cablebox. The center houses a crappy center channel speaker and the 200 disk CD changer. Right top is a Yamaha HTR-5890 and an old VCR on the bottom left.

I'm trying to get the wife to let me put a horizontal Arvo over the tv, but it has been an uphill battle.

To all,

Very impressive systems! It is very visually stimulating to come across this thread. Let me tell you my set ups, (Bedroom and Living room), pail in comparison to what I've seen, so I'm going to give my wife this link so she can stop complaining about how our house looks like an electronic store!

With all the wires, multiple systems (PS3, WIIs, 360s, AMPs), HD DVD players, subwoofers, and square inch upon square inch of guady/gross/outlandish/testosterone oozing screen area she'll see she really doesn't have a whole lot to complain about with me.

I know the vast majority of you guys have to be unmarried, because there is no way I could see a woman letting some of these things fly! If I tried even half the things I've seen here I'd probably be single now! :D

Still, great work guys, and I've gotten a few ideas for my place, from some of the more domestic looking setups I've seen of course.

Here's my living room setup. The PS3 is hidden behind the black cloth in the middle of the ent center. it lives beneath the center channel. That's a Samsung HL-S5087 sitting there.

Here's a shot from the other side of the living room

And, a shot of GT

My camera sucks so everything looks a lot more washed out in the pics than in reality. I also just moved in about a month ago, so I still have some work to do--namely, painting the walls in the living room and putting up some more artwork.

I know I was always entertained by this thread (nice set-ups everyone) so I thought I'd post mine. The equipment:

Pioneer PDP4360 Plasma
60GB PS3 (bottom shelf, right side)
Old, cheap Onkyo Receiver (bottom shelf, middle, next on the "to upgrade" list)
Sony Wireless Headphones (bottom shelf, left)
Plasma media box (second shelf from bottom)
Comcast HD DVR (third shelf from bottom)
Cheap Pioneer DVD player (top shelf, top unit)
VCR (top shelf, bottom unit, haven't touched that in a few years)
Speakercraft MT-6 in-wall speakers (L,R, and surrounds - white grills up top)
Speakercraft AIM Monitor One Center Channel (under plasma - black box)
JBL Subwoofer (behind Plasma)

Guiding principle...achieve a high WAF.

Oh, and of course note the entire Baby Einstein DVD collection off to the left...really give the home theater a workout!

The prior owner had the speakers installed and built the unit around his old 4:3 rear projection TV. I built the stand that holds the plasma in front of the unit so I could go 16:9.

PSN = IQ22

Denon AVR-2307CI (pre/pro)what do you mean "pre/pro"?

S-dogg
03-14-07, 12:54 PM
what do you mean "pre/pro"?

"Preamp/processor". Basically, it's a receiver without an amplifier. You hook your gear to the pre/pro, hook that to an amp (via line level outputs), and hook your speakers to the amp.

There are a lot of benefits to going with separates (more power, cleaner signal), but usually only if you're driving high-end speakers. For the average bookshelf system, modern receivers do a fairly good job.

colleycol, those are nice speakers. Not to get the thread too off topic here, but what's the sound like? I imagine that planar speakers have a crisp, tight sound, but how rich and room-filling is it?

I've stuck with cones over the years out of concern that the sound would be too cold otherwise, but I must say I'm tempted. I'm sporting Polk's all around currently - RT800i's up front, CS400 center, fx dipole/bipole surrounds (don't recall the model numbers), and PSW450 sub. They get the job done.

Your right it does, but I use the pre-outs instead. Intenal amps can be finicky about 4 ohm speakers.

I probaly will NEVER buy another cone speaker, unless space is an issue.

Nice - I'll have to give them a listen next time I'm at the electronics store.

Denon's are some of the best receivers out there, so I wouldn't be surprised if it could handle the load. Still, a separate amp (or two) is the best way to go in a high power/low resistance situation.

I have blinds that come down so the glare is manageable in the day time. The new pioneer plasmas really have a lot less glare than what appears in the picture - also the blinds are not down.

The bias lighting is interesting - I may try it out but don't want it to look like a workshop.

That's a very Japanese looking set-up there (well other than the Maggies) . Funny thing is the first thing that popped into my head was the 'Ebony & Ivory' song (hehe) due to the all black on one side of the room and then all white on the other . The HT portion looks excellent but I don't think I could manage the white furniture ( ISF guy : " well we got the sunlight under control with blinds and blackout curtains but you are getting some glare off your couch that I just can't fix " ;) ) . Very modern looking though and I love the modern looking stuff much more than the old 'earth tone' styles .

They are Martin Logans. The black and white just happened. My wife is a designer so everything had to match- it kind of just snowballed, everything in that room has to be black and white now. I have a silver RDC 7 on the right that will have to go soon.
