Hey, at least your designer wife is willing to allow for home theater with only a matching request. That's a pretty solid way of getting around the WAF especially for someone who's whole business is in decor. Many of us are not so lucky.

Everything of mine is black with some deep graphite grey on the television and media cabinet. Still, I have a cable box from Comcast that is silver - no way around that and I'm not painting their box. I wound up getting a cabinet for my components with deep tinted glass to hide everything. With the display and everything off the dark screen and tinted glass match nicely although my wife does begrudge the "dominating wall of television and speakers". You can still see the displays and lights but the components themselves including the silver box blend in. Airflow is hurt some but not too bad as there's room up front and you can open up the back.

How do you like the Logans? I was talking to someone about them the other day but the closest dealer to me is a 6-7 hour drive. I'd be curious to hear how the sound. Their center channel looks like something out of Batman.

The prior owner had the speakers installed and built the unit around his old 4:3 rear projection TV. I built the stand that holds the plasma in front of the unit so I could go 16:9.

The Logans are great. I've had them for a long time - almost 10 years now - they were originally for a smaller room. I need the bigger summits for my current apt. But at that price I may look at the Revel F series.

HDMI 1.3 is backwards compatible to version 1.0 so if the PS3 is not working on your display then it is something with that particular model and not the HDMI spec. ;) .

Thats the 47 inch. The stand is for 60 inch but I got it for such a deal, couldn't pass it up.

I purchased a new tv. Samsung HL-S6187W 1080p so here are three new shots. Also, today I picked up a $10 24" grow lamp from walmart and placed it behind my tv. It came out really purple in the picture but doesn't look like that in real life. It's actually on in the 2 casino royale pics but my photography skills lack. I like it. First my old set up.

Actually I tried calibrating with the Avia SD-DVD on my PS3 through HDMI (previous settings were from a stand-alone SD-DVD player through component). Color and Saturation were just a little different, but Brightness level was much higher, I suppose due to the crushed blacks others have mentioned the PS3 having. When I used those new settings, I noticed a hint of image retention after relatively short periods of anything bright on the screen, so I changed everything back down to my previous settings and played a variety of scenes from BR and DVD movies to make some minor adjustments based on personal preference and now everything seems fine. So I guess to answer your question, I'd recommend using your normal calibrated settings.

I purchased a 6500K BULB AT Home Depot,$7.99.It`s a 4 prong compact fluorescent tube.It does`nt list the CRI value.I checked the manufacture`s site,can`t find a listing.It`s made by FEIT ELECTRIC.It made a big difference.I don`t fall asleep as often.

haha yeah, i had those through my college years. I actually just recently replaced them with the logitech Z5450's with wireless rear speakers.

As for the twin sticks I had to goto Japan to find those babies. They are quite a rarity in the states and are exclusively for Virtual - on for dreamcast and Saturn. Loved that game so much. But yeah here on ebay you can expect to pay past $100 but I found the saturn one at a used store in akihabara for $12 heh =)

Does the brightness seem a bit high when you're watching Blu-ray movies? It seems a little washed out, but it might be the camera settings you used...

Edit: I have a tough time with the light produced by the TV and ambient light around, I'll have to play with my camera a bit more. I used the ol' THX optimizer and blue filter glasses to calibrate my TVs, it's great!

Hmmm. The gray "blacks" of the Vizio is a real dealbreaker. I know they're cheap, but there's a reason.

Aren't you worried about having that DVD player on top of the receiver? One place I went to had that and I nearly burned my hand ejecting a disc.

My TV has a 1000:1 contrast ratio and honestly can't tell the difference between mine and my friend's LG with a 1600:1 ratio...believe me, if I had the money, I probably would of bought a Sony XBR2/3 or Samsung, but was impatient and went with the Vizio. Coming from a CRT which is the king of black levels this TV really isn't that bad, I was expecting worse actually.

As for the DVD player on the receiver, I guess it's a tough one, it's been like that for literally 3 years with no problems, and my reciever doesn't generate as much heat as I thought, my PS3 makes more heat surprisingly.

cheers mate...the speaker cables were buried into the floating floor before we had the floor laid, and the a/v cables are all behind the unit..which is 3 units made to look like 1..from Ikea...and I don't think it comes in black!

Sadly, those speakers aren't even hooked up. They were hooked up to this gigantically old crt tv because it had those inputs and when I got my hdtv like... 2 months ago it replaced the old crt. I've been meaning to get a reciever and hook them up along with a sub woofer, center channel, etc. that I have sitting around, but I just don't have the money for the receiver right now.

In the States we have prefab home developments in some areas. My in-laws live in one. They build the houses off site in a sort of assembly line process and then ship the homes to the home site in 2 or 3 pieces and assemble them there. Some of the homes have a really nice mod feeling to them which the poster might have been thinking about when he saw the picture of your flat.

Anyway, the prefab home building process saves some money and keeps the build time at the home site shorter which is nice for the neighbors.

ah I see !!!!!..... I think I saw a pre-fab on a documentary once....we don't have anything like that here....though it sounds like a good idea!

Ahh! But wouldn't unchecking 720p really screw with my other 720p games (Motorstorm 7 Formula 1 - what can I say, I use the PS3 as a BR player more thana s a game console!)

Shouldn't VF5 and the PS3 be picking up on the fact I have 1080P ALSO enabled, and run VF5 at 1080P on my 1080P TV? Heck, everything else (the XMB, BR movies, Folding, GT HD etc) does run at 1080p, so why not VF5?

<edit> I didn't realize that was a box scan from your game case, I thought it was a screenshot. I'm QUITE sure my box only says 720p. Hmm - exchange/refund time? Did they release a bunch of 720p discs (and cases) in the first week?

Its a UK box but the US disc is the same.
If you have them all ticked it will defult to the best res for the game i.e. GTHD at 1080i/p and VF5 at 720p

Ok - that makes sense. I'll double check my case and try the game tonight. I'd ratehr let software scale from 720p to 1080P ON the PS3, because it can't be worse than ther atehr average scaler on my HDTV :)

Try it, you'll watch everything with some lights on from this point. :)

its just a demo... the full game could be full 1080p. theres still another month or 2 before it gets released. if they are working for full 1080p but it wasn't smooth at the time they released the demo, they probably wouldn't want to make the demo full 1080p.

as for the scaler, the ps3 does have a scaler, but its not very versatile. the ps3 can do full 1080i/p, but if the game is too demanding, developers can use a resolution of 960x1080i/p then the ps3 scales the 960 to 1920.

You need to take a picture, full resolution, of a corner of the screen, at best. Anything downsampled is useless.

when I took the PS3 pics I tried to get the same scenes just so that I could see what the difference was between the two.... when I was actually watching it I thought the movie looked much better on PS3 but I also just assumed that was just psychological and there wasn't really any difference...



both inputs are using the same contrast/brightness settigns with 75/45

the only difference is the colors. I have my HDMI input set to 35 for color
but I can't adjust colors on my VGA input

I knew the 72 was coming but I couldn't wait anymore due to the delays in my basement HT I had to get something for the upstairs to tide me over till I can get the real HT set up ;)
I'm pretty happy with it honestly I won't beat myself up to much over not waiting for the 72" (I did get an excellent price on it as well as I bought my 46" Sammy LCD at the same time so buying both cash got me a great discount).

I don't seem to notice the issues your talking about Rieper? I have had most of the technologies out there for displays and they all have strengths and weakness but DLP IMO is one of the better ones if your not susceptible to rainbows.
I don't have uneven brightness in the DLP's in my home but I guess it depends on the quality of the set.

DLP's are great. Really bright and really even................. that is of course until you stand up ;)

when I took the PS3 pics I tried to get the same scenes just so that I could see what the difference was between the two.... when I was actually watching it I thought the movie looked much better on PS3 but I also just assumed that was just psychological and there wasn't really any difference...



both inputs are using the same contrast/brightness settigns with 75/45

the only difference is the colors. I have my HDMI input set to 35 for color
but I can't adjust colors on my VGA input

so the vga update on the 360 didn't change anything? Since those pics are 5 months old, I am sure they look different with the recent vga fix. Looks like those 360 pics are suffering exactly from what the vga update fixed, black levels.

it looks beter than it used to on my LCD monitor but on my TV it's teh exact same

My opinion .. the PS3 does a great job upscaling .. I did the best I could with the horrid camera I have to show the difference between upscaling and original in the 1st 2 pics..

I backed up a copy of Jay-Z: Fade To Black .. wanted to see how that scaled in the PS3 .. my original works flawlessly.. my straight copy does not. BBS G35: Keep an eye on the PS3 and the Wii.
The PS3 vents to the back and to the right - Your setup might be a bit snug for that.
The Wii vents to the bottom. Hence the grey stand they ship with it. I'd say to use the stand or sit it horizontally. Yes... I know it doesn't get THAT hot, but it definitely does get warm.

It's BDI. 77" wide, the HDTV is only a 50 inch. I've thought about getting a fan, but i think it's getting enough ventilation, the stand has holes on the bottom, it's slightly raised off the ground, and i didn't put in the stand's back cover,s to keep thing's a little cooler. If anything it's the Onkyo that gets hot.

The wires, the wires! Haha - Have you considered cutting a hole in the drywall and creating a "passageway" for the wiring? It's not too hard, and will look 100x better.

Here's my PS3. Because my entertainment cabinet is fully enclosed, the fan noise was just too much to bear, so I put the PS3 into my bedroom closet, used a 30' HDMI cable, along with an optical to coax digital audio converter. With Bluetooth, its never been an issue.

mine is, that's why it's so stunningly clear :p pretty easy to distinguish "real" from ..."not real"

yours is so clear because your using a camera mine looks ****** because im using a sidekick 3 to take pictures right now. but i'll get a camera soon enough
