50' Samsung DLP HDTV
60 gig PS3
HD UVerse
Samsung HT-AS20

What are you resting your center channel on? I have the new Samsung LED DLP with that same thin bezel and there's no way I could just rest a speaker on it.

Scissor,

I put my center speaker in the same spot first, but found the sound was way to low. I had a custom stand made to move it on top of the TV.

[MG]http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s152/1984911Porsche/IMG_2544.jpg[/IMG]

i prefer mine where it is. i'm just going to angle it up a bit more.

heres my setup.

Samsung HL-S6187W 61" DLP
Yamaha HTR-5930 Reciever
NES (black)
Wii
Dreamcast (black)
Genesis (gen 2)
PS1 (9 series, covered by keyboard and crap)
Xbox 360 Elite
Xbox 360 HD-DVD Add-On
60GB PS3
300 Spartan Helmet
Halo 3 BR-55 :)

also you can see my PC, DVD collection, most of my games, my epson printer on top of the yamaha sub, and my yamaha front & center channels. i have an XP media cetner USB remote reciever under the right side of the TV next to the PlastX

my grandfather and i made the stand ourselves. its mostly plywood, but the top & sides are a 1/4" with veneer, then we painted and painted until it was nice and black.

the TV is WAY too big for my room. i sit about 9 feet from the TV if i lean back. BUT i got such a good deal on it, i woudl ahve only saved tops $100 by going smaller, and i intend on keeping this TV for quite some time.

Just over the TV, it actually stands pretty nice on top, it won't move, the weight distribution of the speaker is perfect, is almost like it was designed to be there...

Looks like it's sitting on there well, but as a word of caution you should be careful with that. My parents had their center channel just sitting on top of their set and it worked pretty well. However if you bump into the tv(or a pet does) it can cause it to fall off. In my parents case the speaker fell off the top of the set, and put a couple scratches in the screen on their DLP. The scratches are very easy to see when the set is off, and if you look for them they're easy to spot when it's on. Not saying you should change it, just make sure to be careful.

Yeah I would definitley not do that. These bezels were not meant to support speakers like that. I would think that would bow your image as well.

Can STR-DG910 accept multi-channel LPCM over HDMI?

Yes... I think so. It accects/displays PCM signal from the PS3 and is 770watt 7.1 receiver. Not sure if the question actually is 'will it decode the 7.1?' If that's the equestion then I'm not sure.
I'm sure the answer is in this official STR-DG910 25 page thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=861730)though.

All of the current AVR threads must be like that. I track the denon 3808 thread and if you post a question in that thread and check to see if it's answered the next morning there will be 3 more pages to check.

I love this room except for the gold fireplace surround. Im really favorable to brushed nickel though so thats probably why, but I think it would blend with your room so much better. The gold kind of pops too much.

I prefer BN too over PG, PB, or AB. For that room, though, I think the PG BF doors in place fit better than BN would (IMO).

Beautiful room Jason. Congrats on your new home. :)

I agree with the Gold trim , I don't like it either , the fireplace opening is about to be covered by some form of acoustic treatment to stop any sound reflections (which will also keep away any light reflections from the glass/brass) ;) .

Thank You ,

Nice room!

Thanks , the couch is about 14' from the screen (my resize software is altering the aspect of the original image) . It's a little closer than I would like but the shape of the room does not allow me to have it any further away ( plus it makes for a great excuse to go 1080p and get that extra pixel fill over 720p :D ) .

lol well i liked kane and lynch, and that prostreet isnt mines i lent my resistance to my friend, for a few weeks and in return he lent me prostreet, which i quickly got tired of..i dont buy much ps3 games, mostly 360..hopefully this year will be different

Why do you have that old monitor? you have a laptop and a Tv right next to it, you should just use the TV as your monitor.
Nice setup for a 17yo btw.

Tilt that center channel up a bit in the front and be amazed at the difference in your sound stage ;) . Those are way too nice of speakers to not have them directed properly (the towers look to be aimed) .

i didn't mess with mine yet

jeffyjaixx
01-31-08, 12:10 AM
I kept it at 51. I used the DMC 4 trailer to compare the FULL and Limited and I found out that 50-51 is the sweet spot between getting the most out of contrast and not missing any details.

SurfingMatt27
01-31-08, 12:16 AM
so that's about the middle setting on your tv huh?

your pics look great! i'm pretty happy where i have my settings now too,i tried before turning up the brightness a bit with using RGB FULL but then realised it wasn't necessary since it totally ruined blu-ray and PS1 playback, they were to high in black level. so i go back and forth between FULL and LIMITED depending on what game i play.

I'm sure sony will make the RGB function better in the next update.

jeffyjaixx
01-31-08, 12:24 AM
Thanks :D. I found out that my blacks were crushed before because of the HDMI black adjust function in Setup. After setting that to Normal, I found out that adjusting the Black Adjust function in the Picture section helps give blacker blacks but not at the expense of losing detail. So I put the PS3 on FULL and switched back and forth between the Black Adjust in Picture section (Off, Low, Medium, High) and found out that LOW was the best in maintaining very black levels while giving plenty of detail in the picture. Medium and High had pretty much the same black levels but loses detail.

Yeah, that's the middle of my TV but I don't think you should use that as a reference for your TV since it's a different model. What's your TV btw?

IIRC it's a TechCraft, think I got it at HH Gregg. Actually a little tired of it, but haven't found a 4 shelf I really like yet.

Just watch out for IR, I had the 4254 for about 3 weeks before I had to return it due to burn in from changing the channels and adjusting the picture in the menu. I now have a 42px75 panasonic that is much better about IR but the PQ is worse than my old 20inch Emerson CRT. I am now looking at LCDs for gaming because of this.

Thanks,

The picture looks like it's right up against the wall but it has a nice size space on each side. It stays pretty cool in the back. This tv doesn't get very hot anyways. believe it or not I installed that shelf to fit my old tv a few years ago and this tv just fit perfect, I think it was a tiny miracle.

Btw, the Samsung is a 720p native, do you recommend doing 480i/p, 720p and 1080i or just 480i/p and 720p for the PS3? Which would give a better PQ or it doesn't matter?

I never thought about the 480i/p stuff. I just thought since games already auto-run in their native resolution, it doesn't matter if I have them on or off. I was just thinking would putting everything to 720p be better for the TV and if Blu-ray will look better at 1080i/p or 720p TV native.

Here's a pic of my cave in the basement. The TV is a 60" Sony SXRD and the sound system utilizes my 20 year old speakers that are too big for the living room. The race frame is mainly used for PC sims and F1:CE on the PS3.

I've got a few ideas for changing the decor that include darker colors and a racing theme in the corner but I can't stop playing long enough to get any work done.

In November I purchased a Sony KDL-46W3000 for the bedroom which came with a free Blu-Ray player. I had been waiting eight weeks for the BDPS300 to arrive and finally asked that they give me a PS3 instead. Well, my brother is now the owner of a 80GB model. :)

First off, i dont believe you can turn off the 480i/p setting on the PS3. Second most PS3 games dont even have a native 1080p resolution at this point in time. Second he should not set his TV to 1080p if his TV does not support it, the PS3 wont even display a picture on his TV. I would just put checks on all the resolutions but 1080p, and your picture will be just fine

It is true. You can't uncheck 480i/p in the settings so I just unchecked 1080i/p since I've read around that 720p is better than 1080i since it's a progressive picture.

Btw, nice rooms above posters.

not necessarily. 1080i has more lines of resolution, so despite being interlaced, for mainly static images, 1080i can look better. but for scenes with a lot of motion, 720p is better.

most 720p native LCD's/Plasma's aren't 1280x720p, but rather 1366x768 (most LCD's) or 1024x768 (a lot of Plasma's) so some scaling needs to be done regardless.

video games that are rendered at 1080p will play at 1080i if you have it checked and you have a 720p native display that supports 1080i. because the game is rendered at 1080p, it will probably look better running at 1080i vs 720p even if your display is 720p native.

furthermore, it also depends on how good the scaler is in your TV. so with all that said, i'd recommend you check all the resolutions your TV supports. if a game is rendered at 720p and that is the optimal resolution, developers will (99% of the time) default it to 720p even if you have 1080i checked (for PS3 games anyway, 360 games scale to the highest resolution, which in reality, makes little to no difference).

Well, I bought cheap and small because I was living in a tiny dorm room for a semester. Price got too steep so I went to live with my sis. She had extra room so... I plan on getting a better setup by year's end.

That sure is one lonely mother-fer! I guess he/she only has 1 or 2 people over to actually watch movies with such a small sitting space. Whats up with the wasted space to begin with anyways, this is nothing more then a "my (insert vulgar term here) is bigger then yours" and is utterly pointless. I love seeing everyones setups, even the extravagant and borderline "cheeky" home theaters but this is just too over the top for me. well, "nice" is a subjective thing, although not the BEST I've heard, but considering how these speakers are the size of golf balls and 50w each, it bumps out enough juice for my living room and surprising loud and deep bass.

I personally LOVE it and will recommend it to people not so picky and don't like big speakers. The IPOD dock is a great addtion, Bravia Sync is also nice. For the price, I have zero complaints :)

also, the crazy home theater in the 2 above posts, that room costs 6 million dollars.

80GB PS3 on a Toshiba 65" DLP, standard stereo sound... for now. Wonderful watching Blu-Rays or playing 1080p games like COD4 and Ridge Racer 7. Speaking of which... What is the best-looking game that is made for the PS3? Most games look good, but they seem like they severely lack AA. Any ideas?

Nice setup!

IMO Uncharted is the best looking next gen console game so far. I wouldn't recomend buying Gengi but looks very good. Download its demo as well as Devil May Cry 4, Ratchet and Clank (note the demo isn't as smooth as the final version and has tearing as it is an earlier build) and a bunch of others on the PSN. Gran Turismo Prologue looks very smooth for the car models. Burnout has a good looking demo as well.

COD4, really? It looks horrible compared to on my computer with its 20" monitor. Could be the size difference, but on the TV it looks like AA is off. Is there some tweaking or calibrating I should be doing??? God, I hate being a n00b in the AV world!

EDIT: nvm...

P.S. Can't wait for Metal Gear Solid! Finally, a game written for the Cell!

Some of you seem to be missing the point of this amazing theater. This is essentially a full-scale tech demo of a product he hopes to market to wealthy individuals. It's not about creating the most acoustically insert atmosphere (though he was a sound engineer, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt).

The show-y nature of the setup with its exposed circle of mega-amps and dramatic lighting are part of his marketing technique.. You can't deny that this is an ultra-chic setup, even if it doesn't fit your personal taste. The lack of seating simply puts more emphasis on the amount of speakers in the room and, more importantly, with a circular setup like this, there is really only one true sweet-spot.

It's beautifully done, IMO.

And what about hi-rez audio? It's a no-can-do for now on a PC. Don't get me wrong I play all my games (except NHL 08) on my PC but you can't diss a 400$ very capable machine for playing a game at 600p.

Has nothing to do with the PS3. It's a multi-platform game, and that resolution plays nice with the 360 hardware.

probably both. off screen shots with a good camera can make the game look a little better than it actually does. but i'm sure it looks good. :)

i have a canon a560 which i consider to be a decent camera. however, i can't get any decent shots. i always see these weird red wavy lines. mind you, i use the auto setting with the flash off.

I can attest to the fact that the Samsung really looks that good. I'm lucky enough to have the same tv that jeffy has and the picture is incredible. I on the other hand can't even come close to taking as good a picture of the screen shots as Jeffy. This is the best I can do. I've posted other shots before but none that does this tv justice. Hey guys,

Just about to buy a new hdtv and I love some of the pics posted here. Jeffy, you have the 5064 right? Looks great but I'm worried abouts eeing the pixels at too close so I'm leaning to the 5084, yeah I can see a slight difference at BB, but has anyone else been in this same spot and had to pick? The difference on amazon is about $500. $500 so you can see the pixels a little less? I dunno... Also Viper, love your pics too but I am trying to stay away from the DLP. The main things the TV is for is blu ray and PS3. Any thoughts and recommendations on people that have considered the 2 sammies? Thanks x 1 billion all

Jeffy must have a nice camera (not that the TV isn't great) but the picture on my Samsung HLT6187S is also phenominal, I just have a camera that can't come close to capturing it. It goes for $50 new on ebay!

The cammy or the Sammy? :p

What is a good free site that will not have bandwidth issues for sharing pics?

Good lord I suck at taking pictures :( Looks much better than the pics make it out to be. Well aside from the wire mess. I'll get it cleaned up eventually, just moved recently and haven't finalized plans.

Display: Sony 60" 1080p 120hz SXRD (60A3000)
Receiver: Onkyo TX-SR805 130x7 HDMI THX yada yada
Speakers: Energy Reference Connoisseur RC-30's amd RC-10's in cherry
Subwoofer: shopping around, probably get an SVS, HSU or Epik

Ok, well here is one, which doesn't do the game or display justice. I'll post more when I figure out how to take a reasonable picture.

I'm sure it's mostly your camera, like me. Your's almost looks like a cell phone camera! Mine just can not handle all the light from my TV. There are no ISO features or options to mess with and when I try to take a picture of something as big and bright as my screen without using a flash, it's just a big blur, no matter how still I have the camera. Or if it's not blurry, it's all way overexposed.

lol, its a 7 megapixel with 3x Optical lens (Carl Zeiss and all) but yeah I rarely take pictures as well. I did put it on a low megapixel for easy transfer but still.

I get much better results with family pictures in the day.

How does your TV handle bright scenes on Playstation 3 video games.

I have the KDS-50a3000 same TV as yours and when I play games like oblivion on the PS3 the bright scenes don't look to great. It is weird though because I used to have oblivion on my Xbox and on the same TV the scenes never looked as bad as the Playstation, so I don't think It is my TV, maybe how the Playstation renders graphics or what not.
