Nah, I have different settings and can make games and movies look great. It is definitely my lack of picture taking abilities. Well, at least I was able to share a general idea of what my setup looks like. Anything beyond that you'll have to visit ;)

As for Oblivion, I don't know I used to have both versions back in the day and never issues with either version on my older displays. Maybe check your brightness settings or something, I do think you need to have the PS3, Wii and 360 set differently as they don't output identical PQ for the same source from my experience.

Yeah that is what I figured ... Thanks for the input. I am noticing that games on the 360 do look more than a bit better lol. I am not saying all games, because Uncharted and Warhawk look awesome. The main game that most defiantly looks better or at least to me is Oblivion on the 360, it is weird looking at candles and stuff in the game and walls it almost glares back into your eyes. Most multi platform games are better on the 360, but recently a few are better on the PS3 (Devil May Cry 4's zero load times, Oblivion's better draw distance, more stable framerate, and shorter load times) There is very little difference in multi-platform games these days (Turok was just lazyness on the dev's part) Call of Duty 4 is a good example of the difference between the systems, and how a multi-platform game should be done.

If you want to get rid of the brighter PS3 image, turn on deep color, it helps with this problem quite a bit. Just make sure that your TV supports it.

I have the Samsung 5054 and I will take some non-PS3 pics mixed in with some newer ones probably tomorrow.

For anyone that's curious, I have the Fujifilm FinePix F30.

jeffy, love the tv, contemplating between it and the 1080p version (5084).
Do you notice any of the flickering that people talk about in the 5054 forums? Also, besides it not being 1080p any other drawbacks or problems you notice? Love your pics and am trying to see if $500 is worth the resolution jump between the 2 models.

I can attest to the fact that the Samsung really looks that good. I'm lucky enough to have the same tv that jeffy has and the picture is incredible. I on the other hand can't even come close to taking as good a picture of the screen shots as Jeffy. This is the best I can do. I've posted other shots before but none that does this tv justice. I'm glad Jeffy's pictures actually show the true quality of this tv and also the playstation.

I posted this a couple of days ago regarding the Samsung 5054 and Jeffys pictures. I do not have the flickering on mine but I bought mine May of last year. All I can say is the pictures that jeffy has posted reflect exactly what it looks like in person. I have not had a single problem with my tv since I bought it...knock on wood.

I would go for the 5084 if you have the extra cash in hand... but I was within a budget although I am very content with the 5054. I do have the flickering issue but it happens so rarely that I don't notice it often.

Here are some non-PS3 pics. I stood too close... you can see the pixels if you look carefully haha. That's what the PQ looks like minus the pixels. I'm still trying to find the most optimal distance to take a pic. Bear with me for now. ;)

This is probably a stupid question but how do you post with the pictures already open. When I post I just download the attachment and it includes the links to the pictures but I would like to have the pictures already open. By the way Jeffy I am going to try to use every setting on my wife's digital camera tonight to see if I can come even moderately close to your pictures.

Hey thanks... this has been a labor of love for me and my wife. I hate admitting it sometimes but most of the design ideas, color schemes and such are mine. My wife basically leaves it up to me but she get final veto on everything. I had an overall vision of the look and feel we wanted are home to have but some of the stuff we came up with through trial and error as we executed the projects in each room.

For example, the fireplace... when we bought the house, the entire fireplace facade was flagstone from floor to ceiling; very Brady Bunch. I tore out all but the area that you seek, knock it down so that it was as flat as possible and then floated cement over the rock to prepare for tile or some other veneer. I really like the look of smooth stucco so I decided to try stuccoing, figuring I could always veneer right over. It ended up looking great so we left it.

The screen is 92". The projector is mounted on the ceiling a foot or two behind the couch.... it's about 13.5 feet from the screen.

OH NO!

BDI Axis furniture! That thing is 1000$-a-piece! I have been looking for those for a while but when I found out about the price it dropped my b*ner.

Yeah... it wasn't the cheapest but it wasn't that bad. I paid $500 for it. We went with this one because it was the only piece we could find that was solid wood and not veneered plywood or particle board. I want the flexibility to be able to refinish the unit at a later date if I choose.

annoyed just to see a blinking light when I am watching a movie so that's
why I got a A/V rack so I don't have to see them. I don't know but that's
just me.

my HT space doesn't allow me to have an a/v rack, or I'll do one for sure. hwoever, it doesn't really annoyed me at all, first none of the light will blink, and I dim all the light down to the lowest setting. plus if you are concentrate on the screen (even when you looking at the pics above), you barely notice the light. but again, I too agree an a/v rack really is the way to go if space is available!

I know, eh. My friend's sister's boyfriend's cousin's house collapsed when he did that.

What's the worst that could happen? Jeez, my PS3 literally blows right into the receiver next to it. And I mean literally - I thought 1.5' would be long enough.

I know hot electronics aren't great, but unless you're using a 360 it shouldn't cause any disasters.

I could be wrong though...

the PS3 can't do DTS-HD MA. and it'll have to decode Dolby TrueHD instead of just output to the receiver. so, I've set it to output decoded PCM to the receiver via HDMI.

Good points guys. I just thought that the Marantz was sooo cool since I am only running two channels with it right now. The intake fan could be a problem, since I am running that Q6600 overclocked to to 3GHz. It has been crashing weirdly lately, but I thought that was mostly from this crappy old driver I tried to install in Vista that seemingly messed it up.

I will stand the PS3 up where it used to be, on the side. It just might get hidden a bit by that pole, though. :(

Hey Blubbs, I have that exact stand with a 40 Samsung LCD as well. Except mine is the older 4095.:)

Have you thought about maybe getting the matching component stand to solve you're heating issues (if you really have any)? You could place the pc on the bottom of it, replace the glass shelf on the stand so your PS3 and receiver are separate, and have some more shelf space. Just a thought.

Thanks guys for the warm compliments. I just added a lamp to the back of my TV for bias lighting and fixed the camera's settings to look as accurately to my eyes in real life as possible. Let me know how they come out. Thanks!

Does the light behind the TV make the image easier on your eyes for extended viewing, or does it also make the image look better such as black levels. I have a Westinghouse 1080p 42" LCD that I love except for the black levels could use some improvement in darker scenes. Just wondering if this would help. Also which light did you buy? Thanks.

Hey Blubbs, I have that exact stand with a 40 Samsung LCD as well. Except mine is the older 4095.:)

Have you thought about maybe getting the matching component stand to solve you're heating issues (if you really have any)? You could place the pc on the bottom of it, replace the glass shelf on the stand so your PS3 and receiver are separate, and have some more shelf space. Just a thought.

Personally, I couldn't stand that glass shelf at all. There is absolutely no way to secure it, if I touched anything up top it would fall out and destroy things above/below.

Yes, I find the bias lighting helps reduce eye strain a lot and the PQ looks better to me with the light on. I believe it also helps with black levels. I just used a fluorescent lamp I had lying around and placed it behind the TV.

Actually Dolby TrueHD can still be decoded inside the PS3 and sent as uncompressed audio to the AV receiver, but if the AV receiver has an integrated decoder it can't be used instead of the PS3's decoder.

Really? I've never had any trouble with mine at all, its pretty secure. Currently I have my PS3 and Wii on it. Do you have the plastic suction cups to hold it in place? I had to apply some force to it when I had to remove it in order to move the stand when I moved into my apartment.

Emacs, that is a beautiful set up. You're not alone with not having taken down christmas decorations. I have yet to take down the stockings. :D

In a couple of months I plan on buying a Digital SLR. I know you have some experience with that, so I may ask your opinion when the time comes. Ive really picked up an interest in photography, and I really want to study it now.

Viewing a picture of a screen through a monitor passes through so many problems it isn't even funny. :) First of course are the unknown settings of the person's display, then the restricting factor of the camera's CCD and capture settings, then the camera's internal JPG compression, then of course the resolution downsizing, JPG recompression, and finally the fact that the picture is finally shown through the end user's completely different monitor.

The best photographer on the planet, with the best camera that will ever be made, taking a picture of the best display in the history (or future!) of the planet, will not be able to overcome these very simple obstacles. The screenshot pictures in this thread in no way represent what it is actually like to stand in front of the display and see it for yourself. In turn, one can take a picture of the crappiest display possible and make it look great through camera wizardy!

As such, pictures of the overall gear and setup have far more value. At least with pictures of the overall setup, ideas can be shared as to how to layout devices, what devices to use, and inspiration can be found as to how to modify one's personal setup.

So yeah, the screenshots in this thread are absolutly of really low quality. That says nothing to the quality of equipment or skill of the photographer, it's purely a side effect of what is being attempted. :)

Not to be picky or nothing but can we have less screenshot of the whatever and more
pictures of the actual setup? I mean don't get me wrong it's great but to be honest
we know it's much better in personal viewing rather than posting a screenshot of it. We
all know what it looks like. I am just seeing less and less of the actual system setups and

Because that's what I have and planning on upgrading. BTW, I love the Rotels and
the Pioneer Kuro. I am sure your friends drool all over that.

I've never heard the JBL's, so I can't tell you anything about their performance.

The speakers I have are Bowers & Wilkens. The fronts are the CM7 model, the rears are the CM1, the center is the CMC and the sub is the PV1.

I am upgrading my modest Klipsch RF-82 setup to B&W 683 (from the 600 Series). I wish I could afford the CM series, but at least I'll be getting the FST cone driver from your CM series.

Well then, since another thread just for setup's cannot be created since it is very similar to this one... what one can do instead of complaining about other people posting different pics of what he/she would like to see, is be nice and courteous and just skip over the pics. Now isn't that simple? Instead of saying
"Oh, how about we post more setup pics than gaming pics since these screens are useless to me", he could say "Maybe I'll just skip over the ones that I don't like and post some more of my setup".

For the record, posting pics allow the interested individuals to have a sense of each game's beautiful scenery and how it would look like on a particular TV. Besides, not every single scene in a game can be found on the internet. If that doesn't float your boat, move onto the next batch of pics.

honestly, most everything around there has felt feet on the bottom of it.. I have never noticed any rattles in the room itself.. but the bedroom on the other side of the wall does

Thanks. It really does sound fantastic. I'm enjoying it through and through. This is my first HT with B&W, though i've had B&W before. I was previously just a 2 channel guy, I had the N805 speakers mated with some Classe gear.

and a lot of stuff in your living room from the looks of it that will rattle like the

Awesome pics, plasma. Try using a tripod or a stack of books to reduce blur, it helps a lot.

Cool haha! Never knew it was such a popular stand. It's an awesome stand. :D.

Btw, plasmawatcher, just a suggestion. I would switch the PS3 to the right side on the first level because the hot air comes out of the right and I don't think your centre speaker likes it very much. :p

lol.. if you think the bass coming out of two 683s is going to rattle like 2 12's in the trunk of a sub compact, you are sadly mistaken..

like I said I have never noticed any rattles and definitely not noticed any movement of stuff around the room (I would have heard about it.. I am sure many of you suffer the same demise..) thanks for the heads up though!

Finally bought a house and my wife was kind enough to let me confiscate one of the closets for a home theater rack.

I even bribed her into getting the PS3 so we could play Rock Band (and I could watch BRDs and play COD4, etc)

My AVR is a dated Sony STR-DA555ES but I'll upgrade this year to something with HDMI and the new audio codecs.

You worked so hard to make such a clean and sharp theater presentation and you got one freggin little black cord showin. Don't that just take the cake. We could all tell you its not such a big deal, its barely noticeable....we would all be lyin through are teeth though. It's like that huge hairy mole on the face of someone you just got introduced to. You try and not stare at it but damn it's just so obvious.

LOL... I've tried tucking that cord away and it just keeps falling out. The shorter cord has been ordered and I'll put it on there next week so I never have to stare at that annoying hairy mole ever again!

I've been sporting def tech since I was in college (10 years ago) and I finally splurged to get a set of Mythos 2's for L/R, Mythos 3 for Center and Mythos Gems for Surrounds. I've been so happy with my ProSub 100 that I didn't bother upgrading that one.

I'm using the Harmony 890 remote which uses an RF to IR extender. You should be able to see some black squares on a couple pieces of equipment. Under that patch is the IR blaster that comes off the RF extender. I've become a huge Harmony fanboy after this project!

Nope, if you actually buy a mythos 3 then the logo comes horizontal. It's tough to find deals on def tech but if you're looking for a set, then I might have a bit of contact info for you. PM me if you're interested.

Wow, been a while since I wrote it all out hahaa.

Notes: Oppo DVD player is used mostly to output reference level 480i DVD signal to Statement D2 which then takes the native source and upconverts it to 1080p before passing it to the HP. Basically I try to pass everything in its native format with little or no processing to the D2 and let it do any heavy lifting that's needed. Works very well.

I also really like the sound of the Def-Tech speakers and it was a tough choice between them and the Paradigms. B&W were also in the mix. Seems like those three brands are often fighting for the same customers. The Paradigms are great, but there is just something about the sound of wrenching steel that the Def-Techs deliver that still calls to me hahaa.

Upgrades?: Well I can see going to a projector when I leave this loft and build another custom HT with proper lighting and the rest. Sound wise I doubt there is much I could do that would be a decent value upgrade that I would actually notice. Maybe when I built it, the new HT gets some new Def-Tech supertowers, C/L/R center and 4 surrounds (all with built in powers subs) and a couple supercubes just to be safe hahaa. Dammit, now I have to move.

I will try and get some pics, but I have some work to do before the room is really settled from the move and there is the whole camera thing ;-)

its the str-k670, nothing special but it does the job..and ya when I saw that stand online I had to buy it, it matches my T.V perfect

I have some of the same paradigms and agree with your assessment. The ps3 is a good blu ray plaer and adds some good fun as well.

Some great setups for sure.

I have been slowly upgrading my system for the last 10-15 years lol. It's pretty much at (or probably in many cases) the point of greatly diminishing returns to much additional upgrading.

What I don't have is a camera (who leaves their HT long enough to take pictures of anything hahaa). I did just add a PS3 for Blu-Ray to my system to go along with my HD-A1 etc, etc.

I guess I can post the equipment list even though I don't have the pics and people can skip until I get a digi-cam in here (I also need to paint the custom built unit before pics heehee.

Wow, been a while since I wrote it all out hahaa.

Notes: Oppo DVD player is used mostly to output reference level 480i DVD signal to Statement D2 which then takes the native source and upconverts it to 1080p before passing it to the HP. Basically I try to pass everything in its native format with little or no processing to the D2 and let it do any heavy lifting that's needed. Works very well.

I also really like the sound of the Def-Tech speakers and it was a tough choice between them and the Paradigms. B&W were also in the mix. Seems like those three brands are often fighting for the same customers. The Paradigms are great, but there is just something about the sound of wrenching steel that the Def-Techs deliver that still calls to me hahaa.

Upgrades?: Well I can see going to a projector when I leave this loft and build another custom HT with proper lighting and the rest. Sound wise I doubt there is much I could do that would be a decent value upgrade that I would actually notice. Maybe when I built it, the new HT gets some new Def-Tech supertowers, C/L/R center and 4 surrounds (all with built in powers subs) and a couple supercubes just to be safe hahaa. Dammit, now I have to move.

I will try and get some pics, but I have some work to do before the room is really settled from the move and there is the whole camera thing ;-)

It's nice to see everybody's set-up. Whether you have a high-end or a budget HTS to go along with your PS3, as long as you're enjoying it then we are all equals! We just moved recently to a one bedroom apt in NY and I had to go with a small budget on my PS3 paraphernalia. I hope I can post the pics ok so you can see my DIY ambilight which I got the idea from this website. It really makes a difference visually and helps if you're watching blu-ray movies with zero lights.

Note on the LCD. I do actually have the backlight turned down and its in "movie" mode which dims it even more. Its just and extremely bright LCD, especially in a perfectly dark room like mine. For example, I can turn all light on (even the front) and see it perfectly. that would wash out my projector (which is ok with the rear lights on).

I used Dioder lights from Ikea. 1 set is about $49 and I had to use 2 for a 42 inch HDTV. The lights has 3 speed settings: stationary (for blue, green and red only) medium speed (about 10 minutes before it changes) and fast.

The Big Boss doesn't mind Miss Kelly Brook on the background. She knows who's in charge and who carries the Big Sticks (in Rock Band) :D

I find that the best themes on PS3 are mostly about lovely ladies. I tried other themes but get so tired quickly :D

It was the pre-order case you bought at Best Buy. Inside was a code to put into XBL and it gave you a couple of items to start the game. One was really helpful (randomly dodged physical attacks, lvl2)

As a bonus, since M$ screwed us by putting 3 discs in one spindle then putting the 4th disc in a PAPER SLEEVE, I keep Disc 4 in the pre-order case since it's got a spot for a disc.

Same thing with Mass Effect. That's the preorder case and then to the right is the collectors edition.

No one here is bitter. Your comment was flamebait for a format war in the PS3 photo thread whether it was intentional, or not. It just takes one HD-DVD fan to read it to go ballistic and derail the thread even more than it already has.

A simple "Just kidding, I own HD-DVD, too" would have been enough to avoid the replies. It's not always about what you meant, it's about what people perceive.

Regarding surround setups, I've noticed several center speakers placed on the entertainment center equipment rack along with disk players/TV/etc. Do you not run into issues with vibration to equipment? I've had my disks skip and had to change to center emulated in front speakers mode, maybe I just crank it way too high... come to think of it, I can't say it was the center speaker causing the skips as I also changed the front speaker stands (I also do not use separate sub for some time as my fronts do good job in that respect as well). However, I've also seen through the years far too many poor solder joints and connectors and such have intermittent issues/hard failure due to vibration/too much moving around. I just don't see myself putting any speaker too close to the equipment stand much less directly on it without some serious damping method. Anyone else see this as a problem for equipment longevity?

My center is in the same stand with my equipment. It sits on rubber feet that seem to defeat the vibration really well. If I was overly worried about it, I guess I would set the center to "small" and just cross it over higher than normal.
