View Full Version : Did you buy a PS3 that works correctly?
OK, so I keep reading reports of disastrous consoles, plagued with HDMI problems, disc-loading problems, sound problems, HDTV compatibility problems, overheating problems, etc.
It's really scary. So, let's use this thread to hear from people who actually have a PS3 that works as intended.
I'm also adding a poll.
RecRoomFan 11-18-06, 04:36 PM My Ps3 Works Great!
Have Already Watched Talladega Nights (nice Picture On My 70"xbr2), Updated Software To 1.10, Connected Online And Have Already Bookmarked My Favorites Through The Browser, And Have Listened To Cd's And Played Nba 07 True 1080p. Just Signed Up To The Playstation Store And Will Be Trying Out The Ps3 Demos Shortly. So Far Very Happy

A problem that seems to be often reported is the following:
"I cannot route video using HDMI to my HDTV set and audio to my receiver using the optical output. If I do so, I lose audio and/or video when I switch from movie playback to games and vice versa."
It would be interesting to determine if someone has this working OK.
It would also be interesting to determine if this is a software or hardware problem.

This is the only problem I'm having. I hope it can be fixed. Sounds like it might be a problem with all the units suggesting it might just be an os problem.

Either that or the Blu-ray hardware guys don't talk too much to the PlayStation guys.
Hopefully it's software and can be fixed via a firmware update.
Richard Paul 11-18-06, 11:45 PM Well I do have a PS3 and though I want more time to use it before posting a review of it I will point out that I have had two problems with it. One is that when I switch from playing a Blu-ray movie to playing a game there is no audio over the optical output until I reboot the PS3. The second problem is that I connected the PS3 to my HDTV's DVI input and it won't work with it at all. It is an older HDTV so I am not to surprised by that but I was somewhat disappointed. I have also updated the PS3 to 1.10 and have downloaded the MotorStorm demo both of which went well.

Similar, but for me I just need to put it in standby mode.
No lock ups yet, and 20 hrs in.
Richard Paul 11-18-06, 11:58 PM Similar, but for me I just need to put it in standby mode.Just to clarify but when I said "reboot the PS3" I mean just turning it off and on using the controller. Didn't have to turn it off with the power switch on the back of the unit or anything like that.

If such is the case, I would consider this a minor annoyance that should be fixed.
William Mapstone 11-19-06, 01:02 AM Yes, it is only a minor annoyance, it takes no time at all, and I am not sweating it.
Halfpipetrick 11-19-06, 03:50 AM I just got one (60gig) and it only connects via component at 480p and with NO color...hdmi is not working - I have a month old Fujitsu P50XTA51UB...any suggestions?
My system does everything great except TEXT MESSAGING. Yes, that's right, it locks up when I write texts. Not all the time, but it did two times while texting friends. How weird is that. It runs games like Motorstorm and Resistance without breaking a sweat yet it can't perform simple text messaging operations. Hopefully this buggy OS will be patched.
jman069 11-19-06, 04:30 AM mine doesn't accept any discs of any kind. Have to wait ten to fourteen days for exchange from Sony
Works on Samsung LNS4696D with NO ISSUES. I've used HDMI only for sound through the tv speakers and then switched to optical to my denon avr2700 receiver as well as my older jvc with dolby digital. Also works on my Sony rear projection 53" set at 480i with no issues.... I've seen problems posted by others having to do with scaling but they are non existent with either television of mine and switching in and out of dolby digital doesn't seem to be a problem with either receiver either.
Games owned:
Marvel Ultimate Alliance
Resistance Fall of Man
Demo's tried:
Motorstorm
NBA
... and all of the others.
Wanna guaranteed frozen PS3? Turn Dashboard to french, start F1 demo and select quick race...
Other than that my ps3 frooze 2 times with demos but I think it's because it's on a shelf just above my receiver which can become fairly hot. I realized that the glass below my PS3 was hot when it froze. I'll relocate my PS3 and see what happens...
...
firefighter81 11-19-06, 11:41 AM I haven't had any major problems with mine.
I've got a 37" Westinghouse 1080p as well as a Panasonic AE900 projector. I get no issues whatsoever with the projector, but as has been discussed in other threads, I get issues every once in a while with a garbled image on the Westinghouse. I simply unplug the DVI cable and plug it back in, works fine.
Also, I can get the PS3 to recognize my Motorola H3 bluetooth headset, but haven't been able to get it to work in game for Resistance. I'm gonna hunt around in the XMB options a little more today and see if I missed something.
Also, I have had the system running NON-STOP since Friday at 12:35am. It's blowing out luke-warm air still, even during gaming.
VeniceDre 11-19-06, 01:29 PM I'm having the Dolby Digital audio loss issue when switching from movies back to games. A reboot solves it. Also for some reason Blu-Ray is only showing at 480p over component video. It's 1080i over HDMI though. This forced me to finally run a HDMI cable from my rack to my Toshiba 65H84.
Similar, but for me I just need to put it in standby mode.
How do you put it in standby mode? Is this shutting it down with the controller?
firefighter81 11-19-06, 01:48 PM Hold the power button for 5 seconds.
This also works with the system in standby mode already. If you hold it for 5 seconds, it resets to default video settings (in case you messed something up)
I love mine, it's got everything I needed. Game console, blu-ray player, web browser and linux-capable box with built-in wifi/bluetooth. My Belkin wireless keyboard works right away without any adjustment. The web browser interface is a bit clunky but once you get used to it...no problem. Works well with google video and youtube sites. The machine is very well-built and well-rounded. I'm a happy customer.
isaidme 11-19-06, 02:19 PM I loved mine but is dead. I had no problems up untill it died. Cant wait to get a replacement.

Was it getting hot?
How did that happen? All of a sudden?
knowspinzone 11-20-06, 06:50 PM One word - SPECTACULAR!
I can't help but think some of the poll results with problems aren't necessarily defective units or actual problems with the PS3. It seems as some are describing some problems are no different than any pc might have. The PS3 is after all virtually a PC. Also the audio issue people are having switching from BD to games and vice versa seems like what anyone might have to do switching from one format of how the system works to another. Maybe the way the PS3 communicates from the drive to the chipset or graphics card differs from BD to games. A soft reboot as some say even seems logical. I would suggest the response where people say their PS3 works but has problems are half the actual amount of real problems. Meaning I believe out of the 27 that have problems but still work maybe give or take 10 have actual problems.
he SED what!? 11-20-06, 07:07 PM Was just at the local BB ealier and saw some kid playing the kiosk. About 10 seconds into this kid playing the console locks up. One of the BB drones came over and opened the case to reset it. He then mentions to another drone that it had been doing throughout the day. He also said that when he reached in to the case to turn it off he was burnt by the power cable cause the thing was so hot from the exhaust. Seems that it isn't a good idea to enclose the PS3 in spaces just like the 360.
I guess I've been lucky with, well, pretty much every console I've ever bought. Dating back to the 2600.
My 360 did do the 3 rings once during the summer. But it was a bit over a 100 degrees outside, maybe a little higher in the house and I had no AC on. The 360 had been running all morning. But turning it off and back on again solved the problem and has worked fine ever since.
The Wii has caused no problems that couldn't be taken care of with an adjustment to my router (it wouldn't connect to the internet). Oh, there is this nasty curve to the left that I have in Wii bowling that the console won't compensate for. Can I count that as a defect?
The PS3 has been fine. But I find that downloads are a bit slow. And browsing the web is like a trip back to my dial-up days. But it seems everyone is having this problem.
gatti-man 11-21-06, 12:36 AM I've had zero problems except for a controller that some times loses connection with the ps3. this causes whatever I was doing last to keep happening as opposed to the game just pausing itself like the 360. has got me killed 4 times in resistance. a mild issue imo. overall I'm very pleased. its hooked up to my SXRD through an hdmi 82vsx pioneer elite reciever.

I read about this controller losing connection issue all over the place, we should add it to the list. This is certainly a defect.
How is the recent batch of PS3, I heard some hardware adjustments have already been made.
firefighter81 11-22-06, 11:59 PM I think that the phrase "I heard" should be censored in all PS3 forums.
Guess what!? I heard that Sony hired demolition experts and mercenaries to destroy Xbox 360 and Nintendo facilities as well as assasinate anyone involved in the design process.
I heard it, and I said it on the internet, so it must be true. :D
jbann27 11-23-06, 12:11 AM I have only had mine since today, but no problems so far...I will try the switch from blu-ray to game to see if the audio doesn't work...My biggest grip is the slow download speeds from the sony store. I have been trying to download the resistance demo for over an hour now and it is only at 44% this is with a wired connection.

Oh trust me, I am not here to create rumor or spread fear...I just want to buy a PS3 and I am eager to learn whether I should expect trouble...
I just want to be lucky and get one that works. That's all.
firefighter81 11-23-06, 12:32 AM Yeah, the servers are being overloaded, they do have their good times though. That's the major issue I think Sony needs to take care of currently.

I completely understand your questions and hesitation. I guess I've been spending too much time on PS3Forums.com where every other thread is something about "I heard that there is a giant recall because the power units are exploding! Shrapnel has already claimed the lives of 6 innocent gamers! You guys should have bought a 360!"
LOL, it's just getting hold. I apologize for sounding harsh, it was meant in a very lighthearted manner.
Cysquatch 11-23-06, 01:15 AM Received mine on Tuesday. Since then i've played Resistance, NBA 2K7, Motorstorm and F1 demos, Blast Factor, Tony Hawk Proj 8, and RR7. I've also watched Ricky Bobby (blu-ray) and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrells (DVD).
I've copied pictures and videos (PC - CDROM - PS3).
Not a single problem so far.

That's good to hear.
The Internet is a great medium, but when it comes to those things, every single defect gets amplified by a thousand.
You read sites like Joystiq or Kotaku and you would think the PS3 has a 40% defect rate.
1) Mine has the disc load issue where discs do not load, Sony service seems great they are replacing it.
2) Also having HDMI issues when trying to run Blast Factor Demo the screen just goes BLACK?
This may be a display issue not the PS3 not sure?
When Blast Factor demo is 1st launched after downloading what resolution does it run in? My desktop is 1080p and I think Blast Factor is changing the res and the set does not sync?
I think I have a huge hardware problem with the HDMI output. I get all these horizontal scanlines on my Samsung 720p DLP. Anyone notice this with HDMI? I can clearly see it in the control center.
Anyone else getting ridiculously slow downloads?
I'm grabbing the MotorStorm demo. It's 456mb. It's moving at ~1% per minute! This is somethign that, on my connection, should take maybe half an hour. It's going to take forever at this rate. I had the same issue with the 1.10 update.
Also, it will recognize my flash drive but cannot play any MP3s that I put on there. This is rather disappointing.
Hmmm. The scanlines only seem to exist in the control center, not anywhere else. Hmm, it's my HD DLP that's displaying it this way for some strange reason. Games and Blu-Ray are fine. Either way, it looks terrible, even in the Playstation Store. Thousands of horizontal lines.
Not good. Not good at all.:(
Anyone think I might have a broken one?

I get scanlines too. But not in games, like you said. Of course, I'm still using the composite connections.
It must be a firmware problem. Something they desperately need to fix. Something like that would be unacceptable with a videocard, I don't see how they could be OK with it on the PS3. I have a native 720p DLP so there's no excuse. I'll try and take a picture of it with my digital camera.
It's really, really bad.
MSmith83 11-23-06, 09:57 PM My PS3 has been flawless after about 15 hours of use. I as well have it connected via HDMI to a Pioneer Elite receiver. The idea of a relatively inexpensive A/V component passing 1080p and 7.1 LPCM through my receiver had me wary at first, but I'm pleased that the PS3 seems to handle this task with ease.

That was a review for Mercenaries 2 - World in Flames that you were reading:
website (http://www.mercs2.com/)
You dolt! ;)
Anyone know of a way to reset PS3 to default video output settings? I rigged it up on my buddy's 51" HDTV, then brought it back here where I only have my parents' crappy SDTV and it's still in 720p mode...definitely doesn't show any video.
EDIT: Figured it out. For anyone who needs it, hold your power button for 5 seconds while starting the PS3 up. Resets video to defaults.
I don't see how my problem could be my HDMI cable. I was fine with my cable STB.
I could try and swap it for another at my local EB, but I'm certain they have none to swap.
tracemhunter 11-24-06, 10:54 AM i havent really had any problems. the only thing that has happened was when the controller lost connection with the ps3 for a split second in resistance. since i am on a 100mbit line at the university i can download a a demo in like 30 seconds. external hard drive works fine, everything has worked so far. i am very pleased.
Hmm. In the end I don't think this is a problem, I just think it's off somehow on my DLP. Funny how my PC looks right on my HD and the PS3 does not.
If anyone else has the problem with scanlines appearing on DLP and other TVs in the control center, please post them.
Not a huge issue as long as games and movies are free of them, but annoying enough.
Returned my bad 20GB unit for a 60Gb, which seems fine.
Did notice a glitch with green lines/dots on NBA 07 for a bit but it cleared up.
Look at the POLL 43% of responders have ISSUES with almost 20% DEAD. Wow.

Wow. I'm still trying to get a PS3 but every day I hear something bad about PS3.
Then I actually TRIED a PS3 at Target and was severely underwhelmed.

The 360 has it beat today, better choice of dvd and online games, HD-DVD titles Ive seen, seem much better visually compared to that movie Sony includes. The MS interface is readable from 8-10' back with ease, it plays content over the network etc, slideshows can have music, background downloads etc etc etc
The PS3 needs time, see where people take the other OS option, let Sony update the XMB and web browser so we can read it from 10' back, get more games, more downloadable games, allow access to files over a network, solve HDMI sound issues, solve HDMI sync issues, etc
I agree with you the chase was more exciting than the catch so far, but I'd buy it again. I don't recommend people to pay much of a premium for it now.
I'd rate it 6.5/10 at most for now...
I've had it for a couple days now and so far no problems. Plays BD's great, it's silent, and I haven't had any lockups. (knock on wood)
I don't have a set with HDMI yet so can't test that.
FrankJ.Cone 01-11-07, 03:24 PM Controller disconnects now and then (Wiimote is worse) , a few times its taken off in a direction of its own and the HDMI sync SUCKS. I have hooked it into 3 HDMI ports so its not the displays. If the PS3 could be set to one res and not bounce from 1080 on dash to 720 in gaming this would not be an issue, but since the PS canont scale it is.
I think we need an updated public poll that is more detailed for obvious reasons.
Poll options should include, but not be limited to:
1) No problems at all
2) Minor issues, like wireless disconnects, like a lot of Blue tooth products, freeze ups like any pc, but everything still functions
3) Major problems like a controller doesn't work or another piece of hardware or software on the PS3 doesn't function and needs fixing
4) PS3 doesn't work at all
Problems should not include things that people want the software to do that it doesn't or wasn't intended to do or even some hardware issues that the PS3 was not intended to do.
How do you weed out people who report a problem that really isn't an actual PS3 hardware or software problem but the failure of some to set it up or connect it properly, yet they report it as a problem?
I bought my 20GB PS3 last Friday and I had to return it on Monday, apparently my PS3 was overheating, it was turning off by itself with the power light blinking red followed by three beeps. Sometimes it did it after 10-15 mins of playing and sometimes after an hour or so. It also didn't want it to recognize any disc, but it fixed by itself after a while.
I also had the problem of the screen turning black while changing resolutions, but I remember reading that after you select your supported resolutions, that you have to turn on the PS3 and hold the power on for 5 seconds until you hear 3 or 5 beeps. I was using a component cable.
Unfortunately my Circuit City is out of 20GBs, all they have is 60GBs. So I'm going to have to wait until I spot another one.

i would think that biggest problem would be xbox owners having "all sorts of problems"
:-).

delusive1 01-11-07, 05:52 PM Been rocking it since 12/8 only one freeze druing Invincible BR...updated to 1.32 and its been smooth sailing.
I have only one minor problem with my PS3. When I am watching a DVD the PS3's DVD control menu sometimes pops up all on its own. Its kind of an annoyance to have to grab the controller to get the menu off the screen.

No problems yet. Watched X-man 3 BLU-RAY ,been playing R-FOM for the past few weeks no lock ups.
Mcklein 01-12-07, 09:27 PM Ive been using mine for a week..everything is all gravy...

rizzxx7 01-13-07, 09:51 AM No problems so far, I've been playing games, dl a ton of demo's and watching a ton of bd. The only thing that baffles me is playing online on an EA game. It always seems to disconnect me, I don't know if its my wireless router or the console but it only happens on madden which is a crappy game but I wish it didn't happen at all.
