View Full Version : PS3 & Dell 2405?
DVD_sanchez 11-19-06, 04:57 AM Hi,
Has anyone tested the PS3 with the Dell 2405 in both component and HDMI > DVI?
I'm keen to find out how it looks and if you can play Blu-ray movies via the digital connection in full res? (With non-HDCP protected movies)
Cheers!
Does the 2405 have HDCP over the DVI ports or is that just the 2407?

The 2405 does not have any HDCP at all!
DVD_sanchez 11-20-06, 04:06 PM Anyone?
RobertR1 11-20-06, 04:12 PM No HDCP on the 2405. No can do. And without an internal scaler on the 2405, you're limited to whatever the downed res is for not having HDCP.
what about the 2407 Dell LCD? i have that, will it go 1080p with the Playstation3 ? or at best 1080i? or just 720p ?
And if it will not go to 1080p, why???????

Is that only only HDMI on movies? Can I still use the digital connection for games? The Component for movies should be fine surely as no movies have the flag enabled?

I'm curious about this too. Apparently no one has tested this yet which seems quite odd.

Possibly because i does not have 1080 lines of resolution on the short side? I don't know, but I wouldn't think it would work over DVI - though component cables probably would.
TwinsPoppa 11-21-06, 02:40 PM Guys, I have a 2405 and will be testing it via component and HDMI to DVI cable. I won't have my HDMI to DVI cable until later in the week or Monday because of Thanksgiving.
I'll test it through component tonight and let you know.
On the 2407 front, I was told of a few things from Dell support:
- 2407 should display 1080p through DVI
- 2407 cannot display 1080i through component like the 2405 (feature/support removed)
Take that with a grain of salt as I don't trust Dell support 100%.
TwinsPoppa 11-21-06, 03:37 PM Okay, I tested the PS3 with my 2405 using a Mad Katz PS2 component cable:
PS3 @ 1080i & RR7 @1080i (OK)
PS3 @ 720p & R:FoM (OK)
PS3 @ 1080i & R:FoM (OK - displays in 480p)
PS3 @ 1080i & Blu-ray movie Talladega Nights (OK)
Once I get my HDMI to DVI cable I'll let you know the results.
Hmmm i wonder if the dvi cable will allow you to view at 1080p the movie or play games.

Well, if the Dell support supervisor is correct and if it's the same as the 2407 (supposedly supports 1080p through DVI) then I'm hoping the 2405 will do at least games in 1080p - maybe not movies because of HDCP.
Once I get the cable I'll know for sure.

I heard that the 2407 supports 1080P, but only upto 720P with HDCP.
longhorns 11-21-06, 11:42 PM Sorry to jump in and be completely stupid, but what's HDCP...?
TwinsPoppa 11-22-06, 01:04 PM Bad news guys. Just tried the 2405 using HDMI to DVI cable - no go. Looks like component is the way to go with the 2405.
longhorns - Here's a link for you: http://www.hdmi.org/consumer/faq.asp
longhorns 11-22-06, 05:25 PM Thanks twinspoppa
Sony just release official PS3 cables which include a DVI cable with audio plugins. It does not plug into the HDMI port either so it should help with monitors without HDCP.

Let me see if I understand you correctly. You mean it's like the PS2 component cable but instead has a DVI connector? Do you happen to have a link?
This would help people with monitors that don't have component connections.
stephenju 11-23-06, 09:38 AM No. It's not a DVI cable. It's a Japanese D terminal.
No. It's not a DVI cable. It's a Japanese D terminal.
so it is a vga cable? :(
I heard that the 2407 supports 1080P, but only upto 720P with HDCP.
720 ? why only 720 what kind of BS is dell pulling :)
Yeah Artimic is right, they are not DVI, sorry. If sony did release a cable like that it would really help out.
longhorns 11-23-06, 09:12 PM Ok i just ordered a benq 20 inch LCD and i noticed it doesn't have HDCP, (i only own a 360 but i had to ask you guys cuz i know you are talking about it) can i still play my 360 on it via vga??? i'm really nervous now...
coolguysa 11-30-06, 10:04 PM It doesn't work. I have a Dell 2405 and a PS3. I bought a HDMI to DVI cable. All I saw was some colored lines going vertically down my screen. I went back to the people that sold me my cable, and I brought my PS3 Quick Reference manual. The manual says, "If a device that is not compatible with the HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) standard is connected to the system using an HDMI cable, video and/or audio cannot be output from the system. Copyright-protected Blu-ray video discs can only be output at 1080p using an HDMI cable connected to a device that is compatible with the HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) standard."
The Dell 2405 does not support HDCP. I believe that the 2407 supports HDCP.
One can get high definition using the component cables, but the picture isn't as good.
Anyone want to buy my 2405 or my PS3? I need to get rid of one of them. I, either, need to buy the 2407 or sell my PS3. Actually, I like the computer games better than the PS3 games. One can do so much more with a computer game, and it is easy to upgrade a computer. I really don't even like the Blu-ray because it is a reader not a burner.
I don't care for Sony that much. When XBOX came out, they didn't make Xbox so Xbox would only work on some tvs. PS3 could have made it so that the PS3 could work on any high def monitor. It is probably Sony's high def monitors that are mostly HDCP. They probably just want to sell more of their hi def products. Anyway, this isn't good. Also, when I go to BEST BUY, the PS3 is always down, glitched up. Today, when I went there, they didn't even have the PS3 on.
The 2407 does support HDCP and has a native res of 1920X1200 (it's 16:10 as are all true widescreen computer monitors)
The 2405 has the same res but does not have HDCP
Guys the 2407 and the PS3 for BluRay movies is a no go, their HDCP implemention(i have no idea if they did or not) does not work, the movie looked like crap, worse than a normal DVD movie on my 100 dollars sony dvd upscaling player.
I guess this monitor will be useless for Windows Vista with HDCP also...
I called Dell support, they said this monitors will not do 1080p with BluRay.
It is interesting since they said it has DHCP built in when i purchased this monitor 2 months ago.

thats interesting, considering there is no HDMI on xbox, and it didnt work on 1080p screens.
:-).

Complain all you want about Sony but they don't make the rules about HDCP. That's an industry wide decision, both consumer electronics and Hollywood.
If you have a problem with your 2405 not being HDCP, complain to Dell. Won't do much good since it's not a feature. Those with 2407/2007 can complain to Dell about non-compliance with PS3 as those monitors have HDCP.
As for the PS3 having a BD ROM drive only and not a burner, well you're really asking a lot for US$600.
fuad
DVD_sanchez 12-31-06, 06:27 AM Anyone got a photo of the Dell 2405 running a Ps3?

They don't need to enable HDCP when you are playing a game, only when playing a BD. Lame.
Vortex3D 01-01-07, 12:05 AM Does anyone know which monitor with HDCP works with PS3 720p or 1080p?
I also have Dell 2405. I'm using Component Video at 1080i right now.
pclausen 01-07-07, 09:05 AM Man this sucks. I just tried connecting my PS3 to my 2405 via a HDMI-DVI cable. No go as others have reported. I mean the PS3 won't even show the boot image. How lame, especially if you were considering running Linux on the PS3...
Guess I'm stuck using my PS3 on my Pearl. At least the PS3 can talk to other Sony devices...
SonyHome 01-07-07, 01:24 PM Guys the 2407 and the PS3 for BluRay movies is a no go, their HDCP implemention(i have no idea if they did or not) does not work, the movie looked like crap, worse than a normal DVD movie on my 100 dollars sony dvd upscaling player.

So did Dell say if they were going to address this issue? Are you able to play PS3 games in 1080p on 2407?
garfy01 01-09-07, 05:41 PM Yes, I've tried connecting them together via an HDMI->DVI cable. It will not work due to the 2405 not supporting HDCP.
If there is a way of disabling HDCP on the PS3 then it should work.
So as an alternative I'm using component cables running at 1080i. The quality still looks great. I tested 1080p as well but it seems the 2405 does not support it.
Does it make a difference though on an LCD? I always thought that it running progressive scan only really made a difference on CRTs because it reduces flicker with a higher refresh rate.
On an LCD I don't think this a problem so theoretically 1080i should look almost as good as 1080p on an LCD.
Any comments on this?
So the PS3 really doesn't output anything at all over HDMI if the display device doesn't support HDCP? No video games? The OS? DVDs? Obviously no BDs.
