View Full Version : Official AVS request list for PS3 system upgrades
husky696 01-20-07, 07:22 AM I own a Denon 3806 and can not get 7.1 output from it through hdmi...There was others having this problem and one person who talked to Denon said that Denon told him that it was the PS3's problem...not Denon's...they told him it was a compatibility issue and that he should go to the PS3 forum and try to make a big stink about it to convince Sony to do a firmware update. I don't know if Denon is right  but if so that would be a BIG TIME firmware upgrade for me and anyone else with Denon 3806 or 4306 and maybe even the 4806 and up...All I am sure about is the 3806 and 4306... So... if there is any other people with these receivers that care about getting 7.1 PCM DISCRETE channels...6.1 too for that matter... through their HDMI connection, maybe you should all post something on the PS3 forums also...and even contact Denon and see what the truth is if you can talk to someone who knows what they are talking about...The one customer service rep from Denon I talked too told me "for PCM signals to get 7.1 you have to push the 7ch stereo button" . Now... I know that ain't right.
Take care,
Brian
That is strange that the higher level Denon's don't do 7.1 through HDMI. My 2807 does it with no problem and that is a lower level model. It even lights up on the receiver as 7.1 and I was happy. What a difference in sound. SACD's through the the PS3 sound amazing as well.

I think the 2807 is a newer model...also one of the sales reps tried to tell another guy that NO denon avr..including 2807..accepted 7.1 through hdmi...only 5.1... but we know he is obviously wrong about that one...
Azzkker 01-20-07, 03:07 PM Enough with the venting. Back to the initial purpose of this thread. I would like to add to the list, which is quite comprehensive (thanks to Daver) , more music visualization capabilities (the more psychedelic the better), and a Random mode to play them all in no particular order (a la MS-WMP). They have done it with the latest PSP firmware and I believe once the pressure of the PS3 release is done we will be surprised by how much goodies we will get in this system.
you can already do this with the PS3. hit triangle when in the music folder and select group content, then select all. then play one of the tracks. bring up the menu while playing the song you selected. there will be a random function in this menu (the one that triangle brings up while in the visualizer). when the current track is over it will randomly select another song out of your whole song collection.
hope that helps you.
thanks
anthony
makan01 01-21-07, 01:37 AM Sorry for the misunderstanding, but I meant randomizing the vizualization (more than underwater, ocean sea bed and surface) and not the songs. The more I am using the Shuffle function for the son the more I am noticing repetitive random selections (same or almost exact same random songs being playued every time I start with a particular song). Maybe a better random function is in store here.
BTW, I have been playing MotorStorm demo and it looks coole especially with its physics engine and exploding special effects. I can't wait for the real game.

The list is fine and dandy, but is there anyone on this forum that has connections to get it to Sony (as if they don't know already) and maybe get their feedback and a roadmap for these features? I believe as a community we are entitled to as much.
I guess I am the eternal optimist. In the meantime I am loving my BD movies, GTHD, and Resistance on my 50" NEC in 1080i, and I cannot wait for VF5.
Hi makan01...
Thanks for the comments, added "-more variety in music visualization".
I don't know if Sony has seen this list or not... AVS is pretty well known and respected so I would image that the industry monitors the board activity at some level. Will it make a difference? I dunno, but it's nice we can voice our thoughts and opinions, and hope these wishes are taken into consideration by the people who make the decisions.

Hey DaverJ...would you put on there something about compatibility issues with some hdmi equipped receivers not being able to accept 7.1 through the hdmi inputs...some denons are only getting 5.1 but denon states that they should be getting 7.1 and that its a compatibility issue with the PS3 and denon...The denon models that I know of are the 3806 and 4306.
Thanks alot,
Brian

I could potentially post a summary of this on the Sony "Gamer Advisory Panel". Which is supposed to be the highest level in the Sony Underground, Im sure they watch this page closely.
Hey DaverJ...would you put on there something about compatibility issues with some hdmi equipped receivers not being able to accept 7.1 through the hdmi inputs...
Brian... you got it. Added as "-identify problem with 7.1 audio playback on certain A/V receivers (e.g. Denon 3806 & 4306)" in the bug fix category.

Great idea Matt!
Duckie24 01-22-07, 08:47 PM Didn't see this one yet:
How about the option to have the PS3 shut down after downloads are complete. This would be nice because you could cue up a bunch over night, or whatever.

Well... Daverj, you can take this off the list...I just talked to denon again and they said they were sorry but they forgot that some of those denon models lacked the firmware for 7.1 pcm output during early production. So what this means is that some people with these avr's can get 7.1 and some cant...If you cant you can get in contact with denon and they will install the current firmware for you so you can get 7.1 pcm output. Only thing is...you have to pay 55$ and ship it to them and then wait to get it back...which stinks!
Thanks,
Brian

Thanks for the update Brian... moved that issue to "fixed" category with the Denon firmware note.
Sucks you have to go through this, but it's worth it for a Denon.
Didn't see this one yet:

With the size and odd speeds of these downloads, this is a very good idea. Added as "-option to automatically shut console down after downloads complete"
It would be nice to be able to shut off both the controller and PS3 at the same time, instead of one or the other. If you shut off the PS3, then you can't shut off the controller (that I'm aware of) and if you shut off the controller, then you have to manually shut off the PS3. Would be nice to see a third option, shut off both.

When I shut off the system the controller shuts off too, I can tell by the red light going out.
^^ like Moose said, you can. When you choose to shut off the system the controllers turn off too.

Excellent idea. I also heard of a survey Sony is conducting about features to inlude, but I have not found it yet. If anybody has a link for this I would love to have it.
Thanks.

Oh ok, I didn't know that. I just kept hearing of people saying to turn off your controller or it gets drained.
I hear 1.50 is now out and it fixes "-fix the jaggy display problem with non-progressive PS1/2 games"
Can anyone report if anything else on the list is improved/fixed?
matt5112 01-24-07, 05:23 PM Heres a small article on 1.50

Perfect, thanks Matt!
Moved the jaggy PS1/2 display glitch and "-option to not auto sign-in to Playstation Network without unchecking save password" down to fixed category.
makan01 01-26-07, 09:23 AM Hi Daver,
It is me again with yet another feature that I did not see in the list:
Support for Bluetooth keyboard/mouse. I have my PS3 in a rack about 10 feet from where I sit and the regular radio frequency wireless keyboards have a maximum 4 feet range. Bluetooth usually has around 30 feet.
Thanks for your help.

Same here. I also will like to see an option to remove the virtual keyboard from coming up when using a keyboard to type. :)
I hate having to hit enter two times to get out of that virtual keyboard that by the way was poorly design.
Hyabusha 01-26-07, 12:56 PM 1080p Upscaling. Please. :)
Ability to delete multiple messages from friends. Or better yet, put the messages of the same conversation (re:re:re:re: etc) into a thread or a single message. Think gmail. Since it keeps both messages received and sent, that list gets pretty long pretty fast and it takes a bunch of button presses to delete one message at a time.
Support for Bluetooth keyboard/mouse.
I believe this would work once there's "-support for GEOP (Generic Object Exchange Profile) in Bluetooth"
1080p Upscaling. Please. :)
We can dream. ;) Added "-upscaling to 1080p"

Anagoge 01-29-07, 03:30 AM I'd like to see a zoom feature for movies implemented that would cut of some of the L/R extremes and make a 2.3:1 or 2.4:1 movie fill the entire vertical screen area of a 16:9 TV. I realize this is a feature that many people would never use, because people love to mention degrading the picture quality, that the TV should do this, or the director's intent, but on small TVs and with certain movies it works great on the Oppo 970 player, for instance. The Oppo can zoom to several multiples of the original size: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.5, 2, etc. When I was burning in my plasma, I also found this feature useful to prevent hours of black bars from being onscreen.

Added "-zoom for BD/DVD"
- Zoom feature for browser
You can move this one to the Enhancements added section. As JackLT points out in this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=797878), you can now zoom in on any webpage by holding the square button down and pressing the R2 or L2 to zoom in and out. Zooming in does disable the cursor and isn't enabled at all if your view area is set to -1 or -2.
There's no limit to how far you can zoom in either. I made the dot in an "i" full screen. :D

Awesome, thanks for pointing this out LynxFX! List updated.
Ragnarok 02-05-07, 12:00 PM The ability to send files through the PSN friends list messaging feature. Also, the ability to use custom images for PSN avatars.
ToddUGA 02-05-07, 12:14 PM How about lack of pillarboxing on 4:3 DVD's? I did a search but didn't see it. Nothing worse than watching a classic movie in 1.33 aspect ratio stretched out. Ugh.

The PS3 doesn't stretch 4:3 DVDs as long as the TV is set to the proper aspect setting.
ToddUGA 02-05-07, 01:58 PM Interesting...I'm going to have to double check that then when I get home. I know the settings were right because I just plugged it into the same HDMI input my old player used and never had this problem before. Thanks for the info.
The ~10 second lockups when watching BD movies needs to be fixed ASAP!!
(Watched Crank over the weekend and must have had 5 of these for this < 90 minute movie.)

I haven't experienced this yet (watched Open Season without any problem on a 60gig model), but it sounds like I'm lucky... there's many posts about this. I put this issue at the top of the list.
Megalith 02-08-07, 10:25 AM Global YCbCr support.
Global YCbCr support.
Explain.
TwinTurboZX 02-09-07, 01:36 AM The ability to send files through the PSN friends list messaging feature. Also, the ability to use custom images for PSN avatars.
I thought 1.5 added custom PSN avatars?
Megalith 02-09-07, 09:13 AM The YCbCr/RGB setting only affects BD/DVD playback...it doesn't affect the XMB, or any video files that are played through it.
I've found that the brightness levels are way off in these areas, and my only explanation is that something is going on with the PS3's way of handling RGB conversion (apparently that's the colorspace of the XMB and PS3 games).
TheMoose 02-09-07, 10:05 AM I thought 1.5 added custom PSN avatars?
They did but just for your XMB, they won't let you make your own for the PSN so you can't put an offensive avatar on it.

Ah, ok. Added to the list.
SirDrexl 02-09-07, 12:34 PM The PS3 doesn't stretch 4:3 DVDs as long as the TV is set to the proper aspect setting.
That's just the issue though. It's an inconvenience to have to switch to a 4:3 mode when switching between HD and 4:3 SD content (this affects many SD extras on BDs). There may also be some displays that don't even support a 4:3 mode, but I'm not aware of any.
Another reason it would be nice is because the PS3 handshakes when switching resolutions. If all disc content could be scaled to an HD resolution, the handshake pauses could be eliminated. I have a disc where one of the warning screens is SD. So, two handshakes have to be performed (one for changing from HD to SD and another for changing back), causing the disc to take longer to load.
Has anyone mentioned FLAC support yet? That would be great, and it wouldn't cost them anything to license it.
TwinTurboZX 02-10-07, 05:21 AM Support for video files > 4GB!!! :(

Is your source on a FAT32 drive?
TwinTurboZX 02-10-07, 04:47 PM Is your source on a FAT32 drive?
No, on a NTFS drive. I recorded hour long shows but in order to watch them on the PS3 I have to split them up in two. If I try and transfer the whole 6GB file to the PS3 with the Abyss Web Server it will only play the first 20 minutes then it stops. I don't have an NTFS external drive, will the PS3 be able to read that?

Excellent post. I don't think I've read a better explanation of the problem until now. Thanks.
It seems we are in the same boat. May I ask what display you are using that shows this phenomenom? I own a Samsung 4692 LCD TV connected via HDMI to my PS3. I have major gamma problems on the XMB and in Resistance. However, as you've already described, blu-ray movies play fine, and are not "washed out".

No, the PS3 does not support NTFS. File size is limited to 4GB with FAT32.
Here are a few features I would like that I didn't see mentioned yet.
- Support for ogg vorbis audio files.
- Ability to use game saves directly from memory cards without copying to the HDD.
- UPnP AV client (for streaming audio/video content from upnp media servers).

I'd really like a way to use my old PS2 controller with old PS2 games on the PS3 and experience the rumble feature programmed into those games.
I know there would need to be some sort of hardware adapter to play connect the old controllers to USB... but I'm sure the firmware would need to support it as well.

I agree -- it's on the list as "-improve compatibility with last-gen controllers in PS1/2 mode, PS button restriction (e.g. Guitar Hero SG)".
I don't think this is going to happen, however, because of the bad blood and legal squabbling between Sony and Immersion Corp. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immersion_Corporation)
Us gamers loose out in this battle, and I hope someday the rumble feature will return to the Playstation line.

 Haven't heard about this, please explain.
Scott_lb 02-14-07, 04:41 PM Regarding the controller issue, I also would like to be able to use a DualShock PS2 controller for both PS2 and PS3 games. I CANNOT STAND THE SIXAXIS! The buttons are way too sensitive and the L2 and R2 trigger buttons are poorly designed. I've been playing through "God of War" during which you have to rapidly press R2 in order to open various doors. It's far more difficult than it should be due to the design of the button. I do recall an adapter of sorts on EB Games upcoming products page which allows you to connect a wired DualShock to a USB cable (which you'd connect to the PS3). I hope this product does become available, because I'm ready to dump my Sixaxis. I'll take rumble over poorly designed tilt control anyday.
mrmeyer 02-21-07, 11:46 PM Fantastic list. I agree strongly with several entries.
One fix/change I would love to see is simultaneous output on analog audio out as well as the Digital Optical. I often play games with audio through the television, then have to change settings in setup menu to activate the digital output to watch a movie. I find myself changing the audio settings several times a week:( Worst thorn, PS2 does this, since launch!
Fantastic list. I agree strongly with several entries.

Great point... added "-ability to simultaneously feed audio through optical and analog"
I really miss the ability to shut down the console, without having to confirm that i really want to

I'm using one of the newer JVC HD-ILAs.
Although I've only seen a few people bring this issue up, I'm certain that it is an issue with the PS3, since my other HDMI devices operate at normal brightness/gamma.
However, it bothers me that nobody has really brought this up, so I don't think Sony will address it anytime soon. Does the OP have contacts at Sony?
For the time being, I'm using component/1080i for PS3, which actually seems to provide a smoother picture than HDMI. Problem is, I have to switch the component cables back and forth between the PSTwo and PS3, since I'm out of inputs (The PS3's BC is awful even after the latest firmware).
Does the OP have contacts at Sony?
Nope.
My goal is this: a public list in a respected place might hopefully cause Sony to take notice. I always believe the "squeaky wheel" and all that....
freestyle 02-28-07, 03:25 PM * Parental Controls should be user specific and not applied to ALL users
* Users should have their own Music, Photo and Video - (It should not be shared amongst all users)
* And (to fix the second one) there should be a "Make Private to Current User" OR "Make Available to All Users" option for users to apply to any photo, video or music file. And then it would be hidden from other users and could not be deleted accidentally or on purpose.
The parental controls thing is huge though... Having it system wide makes there no point to having different users.
As best as I can tell the ONLY three things that are user specific are 1.) Browser bookmarks, 2.) game saves and 3.) PSN ID
A 1080p 24 update is what would sway me to buy the PS3, and is the only thing I am waiting on.

-improved Parental Controls: user (log-on) specific with option to make individual music, photo and video categories private or public per user

LowStealth 03-02-07, 09:09 PM Since so many receivers (including mine) do not properly boost the LFE channel 10db when fed audio via HDMI, maybe Sony could help us out. My totally uninformed wishful thinking believes that this should be pretty easy to do.

Really? I've watched many DVDs on mine and I don't think I've ever seen a layer change.
Can anyone else report noticing bad layer changes?
SirDrexl 03-03-07, 12:58 AM Could you add FLAC support? Because it's a free, open-source codec, I think it's more likely to be implemented than Apple Lossless, which would have to be licensed from Apple.

I've seen a number of DVD layer changes since I bought my PS3. I was surprised since I figured Sony would use some of the RAM in the PS3 to have seamless layer changes.
Updated list to reflect version 1.54 of software, which moves the following down to fixed list:
-intermittent freezes approx. 10 seconds during BD playback, introduced in version 1.5, possibly caused by wifi connection (workaround: disable wireless before watching movie) - fixed in version 1.54
Can anyone else report any changes to this list introduced in 1.54?

mchamblissII 03-06-07, 01:30 AM ok I think I have 1 well it's more like 3 lol so just bear with me on this, but I haven't seen it on the list. I just register my blu-tooth head set to my ps3 and it mentions that it registered and everything on the system. But it would be nice f they have a function on the top right of the screen where tells the person if it's on or off. Sometimes I don't know if my head set is working when I turn the system on. And it would be nice if it show how much battery life it has.
Another thing that would be nice if people from the same system can use multiple wireless blu-tooth head set during a game instead of having just one.
The last one well I don't know if it just me or not. But I wish they have a different menu then the one they have listed when you press the ps button while playing games or watching a movie. It would be nice if they have a side bar menu kinda like the 360 but different where you can have a variety of options to choose from while playing or watching a movie, instead of a black screen where it say quit game, assign controller, turn off system etc... but something more innovative. :)
Added "-ability to use multiple wireless headsets on the same system, possibly tied to multiple log-ins, with optional on-screen indicator"
I'm not sure how to describe "OS redesign"....
mchamblissII 03-06-07, 03:10 PM lol I think that's perfect. I think that sony will come up with something. I am just a little tired of looking at that screen when I press the ps button.
mchamblissII 03-07-07, 07:37 PM I'm not sure how to describe "OS redesign"....
Ok now I put some thought into the os design. Would it be cool if they came up with something where you can use the cross media bar for in game use or movie instead of the black screen where it say quit game etc....... So for instance, when you press the ps button it just pop up with cross media bar while it pauses your game so you can go through setting or looking something up at the ps store etc..... I might be the only one who thought of this but I think that would be cool to have.

What if the game is using all of the available memory? I don't know if there's a way for them to swap out memory to the drive so the XMB can run. They probably use the simple black screen because it takes a mimimal amount of memory.
Still, I have to say continuing the XMB interface deeper into the design would be nice. If you notice on certain games the loading or saving screen has a similar status bar. I agree that this little touch feels more in tune with the overall system style, and more of this concept would improve the look and feel.
Adding "-develop the XMB interface into game and movie playback"
mchamblissII 03-07-07, 08:46 PM yep hopefully Sony might have that in mind :)
The PS3 doesn't stretch 4:3 DVDs as long as the TV is set to the proper aspect setting.
Yes it does, over HDMI at least. Over HDMI the TV gets its aspect ratio information from the PS3 not the user and the PS3 fails on the 4:3 ratio check included with every THX movie, and of course also fails to play 4:3 movies properly on a 16:9 TV over HDMI at least (like mine).
PS3 + Yamaha HTR5650 receiver (TOSLink) + Toshiba 30HF86C TV (HDMI)
Increase Font Size -- The list states that this was fixed in 1.3. Well it needs more. +2 is not enough. We should be able to make the text the size of fists if we wanted to like any other browser out there. But at least give us a few more size increases because right now it is almost useless for most sites.
Zoom -- On the list. Inconjunction with the larger font, being able to zoom in and around on a page would be great.
Definitely and definitely. The zoom feature would be especially nice -- when I hit R3 I expect the window to not just get wider, but the whole contents to zoom up as well. Unfortunately, I still have almost illegible text on sites like Facebook while in the PS3 browser.
Also, let me add that the browser should support proxies. I have a web proxy server at home I use that decreases my latency on frequently accessed pages and many ISPs offer such a feature as well. Full WPAD support would make sense and be easy enough to implement, but simple "ip address + port" would be sufficient I suppose.
Even better, compile Firefox for cell (already done) and offer it as a browser from the XMB. Speaking of which ...
Feature request: installation of PS3 compatible software to be executed directly from the XMB. Make size limitations or whatever if you want to prevent wholesale piracy if you think its an issue but I'd like to be able to run homebrew software directly from the XMB without rebooting into Linux, and have access to the PS3 "filesystem" from within said software.
Heck, make it an emulation layer and make us write the software in Java or Python or something, I don't care, but let me install 3rd party non-game software please :-)
PS, I understand the not-allowing-3D-games thing since Sony makes their real cash licensing dev kits and trademarks to game developers and can't afford to dilute that value offering full homebrew support at this time, but allowing what's already doable from PS3 Linux directly from the XMB would be very nice.
UxiSXRD 03-09-07, 12:06 AM I'd admend that request to let us use something like widgets in the XMB. They should definitely be segmented from the ability to do anything malicious but letting them copy/manipulate saved files would be nice.
Support for 480i/576i HDMI output for SD-DVDs.
inurenegade 03-14-07, 03:10 AM better support for mp4 videos
support for aac audio using winamp encoding
possibly allow for mkv support
also support for ogg audio in mp4 even though its not standard
maybe higher avc level support
support for H.264 in TS files
VP6, VP7, WMV9, VC-1 support
Noise reduction, Edge enchancement, sharpening options for BD/DVD playback like on PS2
SSA and ASS subtitle support too
inurenegade 03-14-07, 03:39 AM oh forgot to add
do not downmix 5.1 aac audio and if aac is not selected for audio output then recode to AC3 and output to reciver
Support for Realplayer video .rmvb format.
gte747e 03-18-07, 12:52 AM PS2 Game Muppets Party Cruise will not work properly on PS3.
It works with only 1-2 controllers instead of 3-4.
Sony has it listed on its combatibility website (http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus) :
"Description: With 3 controllers connected to the system, assigned to the default controller ports, and no Virtual Memory Cars assigned, the title does not recognize controller input from controller 1 and 2. "
Thanks for compiling a list.
eimajnacnud 03-18-07, 02:10 AM The ability to browse around while downloading something.
Megalith 03-22-07, 06:33 PM How about a screencapture function for Blu-ray movies, once Sony finally allows us to customize the XMB background?
I paused Rocky Balboa when he's at the top of the steps at the Philadelphia museum, and I thought it'd look great on the XMB.

1.6 is out
I updated the downloads part, but does anyone know if the new version will resume downloads if the system is shut down?
Also, any other changes I need to update on this list? Thanks for any assistance.
victorchan 03-23-07, 12:56 AM can't read blu-ray disc at all after the 1.6 updated .......
My 4x3 movies are never stretched.... and I use HDMI.

Upconvert 720p games to 1080i for us poor bastards whose sets don't do this.
720p to 1080i (or the other way around) would be a cross convert, not up or down.
On the list was -fix the game resolution downconvert for HDTVs without 720p input
...so for clarity I add added this to the end:
i.e. 1080i support for all games
I'd love to see support for Motion JPEG AVI files such as produced by Canon cameras.
Plugging in the camera's memory card to view pictures is a great feature but the videos currently don't play. And with the Canon TX1 coming out soon which will record 720P video files they'd look great on the HDTV via the PS3.
cuadra11 03-27-07, 02:31 PM I would like to have the abilty to Demo ALL games, not just a few of them. I hate having to purchase a game wonder if the game is good or not. Some times I want to rent a game want but its not in stock or i just dont have the time to drive down to the Blockbuster. Also custom avatars and main screen background uploads would be nice.
The download manager in 1.6 resumed a download for me after my PS3 was powered down and restarted.

Updated the list to move the following down to fixed/added:
-ability to resume interrupted downloads - fixed in version 1.60
motorhead7319 03-28-07, 10:45 PM How bout a top loader or tray loader? LOL I hate slot loads and wont buy one till they have a different type of drive in the system. Car stereos have these drive slots with felt in the inside but anyones discs i have ever seen over time get scratched up from the player. Yes blu-ray discs are awsome they are scratch resistant ect ect but the old dvds, cds and PS1 and 2 games are not scratch resistant.
A few things I'd like...most have been mentioned though
1. being able to stream media from my LAN via the XMB (a DAAP/SMB client would be nice).
2. being able to play AAC and Apple Lossless audio generated by itunes
3. being able to play WMA Lossless audio
4. being able to play quicktime video
5. Quicktime / Windows media plugins for the browser
6. a pandora client on the XMB
7. the ability to charge a PS3 controller whilst the PS3 is in sleep mode
Thats about it really.
I'll add a few variations to some of the previous video playback requests:
Support subtitles and chapters in MP4 video files
Support MP4 metadata (cover art, actor, director, genre, etc) in mp4 video files
Support mpeg4 ASP codec in MP4 file containers, specifically xvid.
Better UI for browsing large numbers of video files. SingStar UI looks like a good place to start. Support filtering videos by actors, directors, series and genres.
ToddUGA 03-29-07, 07:42 AM Got a couple more:
Ability to play video cd's.
Ability to play region free PAL DVD's.

That's nice, but it's not for this thread. This thread is only for things that (hopefully) can be changed via system update downloads. Physical changes are obviously beyond such control.
I have a new one. I've played a DTS CD on the PS3, and as long as the sampling rate is set to the proper 44.1 khz for CDs, it plays fine. (Setting it to 48 khz causes the system to resample the data, which destroys the signal, resulting in noise). Okay, however, the PS3 does resample WAV files. A way to test to see if it (or any other device like a sound card) is resampling the audio is to play a DTS WAV file, since the DTS signal depends on a pure bitstream. I tried a DTS WAV file and heard noise, so it must be resampling or doing something else to the audio before it's output. I've played these files on my computer with a sound card that does not resample, so I know the files are fine.
So, I would like to request the option for no resampling of WAV files. It may be doing it for MP3s as well, but I don't know of a way to test that.

liscensing issues are going to stop a few of those.
UxiSXRD 03-29-07, 02:58 PM Everybody I know with an iPod uses mp3 anyways. Fagettabout AAC! Quicktime could be most useful... As long as you flash an Apple logo it should be able to do an API for PS3...
liscensing issues are going to stop a few of those.
Perhaps. Sony seems to already have acquired some license on the WMA side, so it would appear MS isn't completely stone-walling Sony on that front.
As for being able to play non drm'd Itunes music, I'm not sure why that would be an issue. I mean even the Zune can play those. As far as I know, Apple owns neither AAC or the m4a container. Just Fairplay thats used in their m4p files.
One other thing I wish the PS3 could do is decode AAC 5.1 audio files.
Everybody I know with an iPod uses mp3 anyways. Fagettabout AAC!
Whereas within my circle its the reverse. The only time I see MP3 is with podcasts.
SirDrexl 04-07-07, 03:39 PM Here's another minor request. I was browsing the web the other day for the first time, and I was surprised that the number keys on the BlueTooth remote didn't work for entering web addresses. They should change that. It would also be cool if they could use the colored buttons for web browsing, but I doubt they will, since they're for BD functions.
So, maybe "enhanced BlueTooth remote support"

Saleen4971 04-10-07, 11:26 AM dont know if thsi has been posted yet - but every time i watch a movie trailer that i downloaded, when its done it jsut pauses - i woudl rather it exit the trailer and go back to the dashboard instead of me having to exit
eddie saza 04-19-07, 12:50 PM I really want my video files to play continuously as i have a lot of music videos.
Perhaps an option to create a playlist for video files?
I noticed that there's also no playlist for music and photo slideshow.
Option to create playlist for photo slide show?
Jules343 04-19-07, 01:33 PM What was updated in 1.7? It came up last, but I didn't see anything on the Sony Network site, they still had 1.6 listed. I do know I can't play MK II online until I get the update.
I just found this:
The update lets you play original PS1 games that you download for your PSP on your PS3. Plus, whatever saved games you accrue when doing so can get transferred over to your PSP later. Not sure if you can transfer them back to your PS3.
Also, PS1 and PS2 games that have vibration controls can now be supported with whatever vibration accessories are available for the PS3.
-added the playlist request... that should have been on there long ago.
I'm thinking of marking the following as fixed: "-improve compatibility with last-gen controllers in PS1/2 mode, PS button restriction (e.g. Guitar Hero SG)". Is there still a PS button restriction?
Any other items that have been addressed with 1.70?
Jules343 04-19-07, 11:30 PM the seems to be about it:

This is in conjunction with the PSP/PS3 titles.

Heh, I would try to download the update again. I think you can get it off the PSN website and burn it to a CD, see if you can reinstall it.

Mattardo 05-05-07, 12:17 PM How about a controller configuration menu via the PSbutton midgame, that will override the game's controller presets and allow you to configure your own? I think there's a lot of people who would kill their neighbors for such a feature. The only problem with acessing it via the PSbutton would be that it would exclude those of us who hate the new Sixaxis and use a USB adaptor to use the old controllers. Whattya say? The perfect option for picky people who are sick of developers telling us what buttons to press!
Jules343 05-05-07, 12:40 PM PLAYSTATION®Network upgrade: Tuesday 08 May
Over the next few weeks, some new and exciting changes will take place in the PLAYSTATION®Store. In preparation for this, both PLAYSTATION®Network and PLAYSTATION®Store need to be taken offline for a short while to allow us to carry out the upgrade and maintenance work.
This is scheduled to take place between 16:00 and 19:00 BST (17:00-20:00 CEST) on Tuesday 8th May 2007.
If you are already logged into an online game during this time, you will most likely find that you can continue playing as normal, but you will not be able to log in or start a new game until full service has been restored. You will also not be able to access the Store during this maintenance window.
We are hoping to complete this work in as short a time as possible and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. But remember that these enhancements are paving the way for new and exciting content that we have planned for the Store!

Already on the list as -ability to map keys on SIXAXIS and save as a "keymap set list".
SirDrexl 05-05-07, 03:35 PM The ability to change button assignments (outside of a per-game basis) has never been available in any console as far as I know, so I don't see why the PS3 would be different. I agree that it would be nice, but I just don't see it happening now when it hasn't before.
That reminds me of an article I read years ago in EGM where they were mentioning how they wished they could change buttons in every game. They asked developers how long it takes to implement button assignments in a game and they said it took less than a day.
Mattardo 05-05-07, 09:00 PM No console has ever had Bluetooth controllers and sixaxis mumbo-jumbo, yet here it is. Just because no other console has ever done it, doesn't mean it shouldn't or couldn't be done. If enough people scream and yell, perhaps, just maybe... I guess I missed it in the list earlier as well. Join me, Drexl, and together we shall remap controllers as father and ... oh wait, I'm spazzing again. out of curiosity, is this list submitted to Sony on a regular basis? How is this being handled? Should I just call them up and begin reciting my demands starting at the top and working to the bottom lol?
is this list submitted to Sony on a regular basis?
This is purely a list to vent wants and desires in a public place. My hope is that something in a condensed form might make it's way further up the food chain than a bunch of random posts.
But this is "official" only on AVS for our community and I have no idea if anyone as Sony is even aware of this list.
It would be cool if the in-game PS menu had an option to take a screenshot and save the current game screen in the photos area.

Tripjammer 05-07-07, 11:19 AM How about this option.
The ability to voice control the PS3 XMB including the web browser using the bluetooth headset or Playstation Eye.
The ability to enter in test using voice recognition using the bluetooth headset or Playstation Eye.
The ability to control the web browser using hand motions using the Playstation Eye.

Oh. So currently this list is like a Christmas list that never makes it out of a child's notebook, so there's no chance Santa will ever see it. That's unfortunate, because there's some real good ideas here. It's too bad that nothing's being done about them. Oh well, maybe Sony will read this thread .. if they're ever bored .. and accidentally stumble onto it .. and care seeing as nobody's making an effort to show them that WE care about these options. Yowzers. I really thought someone was sending them this list on a regular basis... tsk.

Mattardo:
If you have ideas on how to get this to Sony, help us out!
Posting and maintaining a request list in a public place was the best way I could think of to address, or at least discuss, ways to improve the PS3. If you think the effort isn't enough, I invite your assistance getting the word to the people that can do something about this.
Mattardo 05-07-07, 01:53 PM Why don't you e-mail the Engineering department with your list? Or customer service? There are several contact numbers, e-mails on the SCEA sight for just such a thing. To make it more effective, why not have all of us members send this in? The more people, the stronger the voice. Has nobody suggested this before?
Has nobody suggested this before?
Yes, when the list started I was contacted by someone who might have an inside into Sony.
The reality of the matter turned out to be this: any changes on the level we are talking about on this list is done very high up at Sony of Japan. Sony of America has little to nothing to do with the hardware of the PS3. This makes contact with the decision makers and engineers very difficult.

IRE only applies to analog connections, as it represents voltages. See this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&postid=4969789#post4969789) for more information.
What you're probably asking for is an option to map studio RGB levels to PC levels to match a monitor calibrated for PC video.

^^ thanks for the clarification SirDrexl -- I added the RGB thing to the list.
Mattardo 05-11-07, 06:04 PM By the way, Daver J, I have been calling Sony countless times on the audio blue-ray dolby digital glitch and finally got through to someone who can talk to engineering (I guess when you pester them once a day with e-mails and phone calls and refuse to hang up - they THINK about doing something). To bolster the fact that I'm not lying I pointed them to the BlueRay.com thread on the subject and to this thread under bug fixes. I also suggested they take a look at this thread and see if they could do anything. So there. It might not accomplish anything, but at least I gave it to them. Now dance dance!

Perhaps when they launch the VOD service later this fall they wil see the need for multiple folders. It will actually be video and music, but VOD works to describe it.
I don't know if they, Sony, honestly thought people would have that much media housed on it esp. with the internal 60GB HDD. What happens if you hook up an external HDD via USB with multiple folders? Does it allow for navigation through those folders? What about creation/deletion of folders on this external HDD?
I hear you though; on my soft modded Xbox running XBMC I have a folder for every television show and then a folder for every season of said show. I then have a thumbnail that is displayed in place of the regular folder icon so I can tell what folder is for a particular show without reading. Similar structure for my music, but my movies just get dumped in one folder.

Precisely. I have multiple TV shows in multiple seasons (for example, every episode of Seinfeld, The Simpsons, South Park, 24), tons of movies, photo albums - folders are ESSENTIAL for organization of massive amounts of media. Sony not "anticipating" users storing lots of media on their console is an unacceptable excuse - I want to use my PS3 as a media center, a portal for all of my shiz. I can't do this without basic organizational tools.

There have been several things addressed with these updates and future 2.0 update looks to cover a pretty good bit as well. It's just some of the things that AVS members want have not been covered.
A better place to post such a list would be in the official Playstation 3 forums. They even have a stickied thread regarding F/W update features where you can post requests and questions. Much better chance of having somebody that can affect change reading it there.
As always; calling and emailing stand the best chance of getting you heard.

SCEE said in a press statement that the latest firmware update upscales DVDs and old PS1 and PS2 games to full 1080p resolution on compatible HD TVs.
Aside from visual enhancements, the other main feature that Sony touts is added Remote Play functionality via PSP. The update will allow PSP users to access their connected PS3s through the handheld from anywhere with an available broadband connection.
Firmware 1.8 will also allow PS3 owners to create a home network over which users can play content stored on connected computers.
Other additions include the ability to print photos stored on the PS3’s hard drive or removable storage card on certain Epson printers.
SCEE said that the update goes live tomorrow. Next-Gen is checking with SCEA for North American confirmation.

UPDATED NEWS - WEDNESDAY 23rd MAY
PS3 Firmware Version 1.80 Announced
Latest PLAYSTATION 3 Firmware Update Provides PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and DVD Upscaling
Remote Play on PSP (PlayStation Portable) via the Internet and DLNA transfer of media content also enabled
London, 24 May 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced today availability of the latest version of the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) firmware. Version 1.80 features upscaling of PlayStation® and PlayStation 2 games, and DVD movies up to full 1080p HD resolution when viewed on a compatible HD TV set.
The capability to upscale DVDs to HD quality is a feature normally only associated with top range DVD players, and its inclusion in the latest firmware upgrade now allows PS3 owners with an existing DVD collection to dramatically enhance the viewing pleasure of their DVD collection when viewed through a compatible HD TV set1. Not only can DVD movies be enhanced to full 1080p HD quality but so too will PlayStation 2 and PlayStation games be upscaled to provide much improved gaming pleasure.
In a comprehensive update to PS3’s already impressive capabilities, Version 1.80 also allows users to enjoy Remote Play on their PSP across the internet, allowing them to access their PS3 anywhere in the world where a broadband internet connection is available2.
Version 1.80 also allows users on a home network to seamlessly view and play rich media content such as images, music and video on their PS3, that is stored on their DLNA3 enabled devices such as PCs and laptops elsewhere in the house, reinforcing PS3’s credentials as a home entertainment hub that truly deserves pride of place in the Living Room.
A host of other enhancements include the ability to print photo images stored on PS3’s hard disk or inserted storage media to a selection of Epson printers.
PS3 owners will be able to upgrade their PS3 with the latest Version 1.80 firmware from 24th May 2007.
- ends -
Notes
1. DVD-ROM (including DVD Video content) can only be upscaled with HDMI compatible TV sets.
2. Use of Remote Play requires a powered up PS3 with Version 1.80 as well as PSP firmware version 3.50 which will be available at the end of May.
3. DLNA – Digital Living Network Alliance. For more info on DLNA, please see http://www.dlna.org/en/consumer/home

With this update and the rumored 2.0 update I think that takes care of the many issues people have been complaining about.
Jules343 05-23-07, 08:34 PM Well guys here are some pics off Joystiq so take them with a grain of salt:

Very interesting. DVD upscaling is a big one for me because I use my PS3 as my main DVD player.
I'm still wondering how PS1/2 game upscaling via HDMI will be... probably through software? Will this help with lag...?
I guess we'll find out in a day or so.
Jules343 05-24-07, 12:18 AM Dave it's live now, go get it.
oh and 720P Blu-Ray now works.
I'm guessing through software as well. I don't play very many PS2 games on the PS3 what do you mean by lag? I didn't notice any issues with GoW2.
SirDrexl 05-24-07, 01:23 AM While DVD upscaling was added, it still does not upscale SD material on BDs. Such material, if 4:3, is still displayed stretched to fill a 16x9 display, which on some displays means we have to manually switch to 4:3 mode. This disappointed me, as it was the only reason I wanted DVD upscaling in the first place. (I assumed DVD upscaling would take care of this.)
So, cross off DVD upscaling, but add a request for upscaling (with proper pillarboxing) of SD material on BDs.
I believe they have fixed the issue of improper video levels on some displays. There's a setting for "RGB full range (HDMI)" that can be set for full or limited. I think this is NOT related to BTB or IRE, but rather a setting for remapping colors to video (216-235) or PC levels (0-255). Before, it only would output video levels. This should help those who have a washed-out image because the display wants PC levels instead of video levels.
Jules343 05-24-07, 01:51 AM Is there a way to find out what your display should be using; pc or video?
and why do we still have SD material on BDs? Isn't that one of the advantages of all that capacity, even the extras can be HD. ;)
SirDrexl 05-24-07, 02:31 AM Is there a way to find out what your display should be using; pc or video?
Usually televisions and projectors expect video levels while computer monitors expect PC levels. Sometimes a certain type of input, like VGA or DVI, will expect PC levels while the video inputs like HDMI or component on the same display will expect video levels.
In the end, it's just a matter of calibrating to match the input. If you have an input that is shared by other devices, you want them all to use the proper levels. So, if you had another device that outputs video levels and is connected to the same input as the PS3 through a switcher or receiver, you would want to select the limited setting so it would match the calibration of the other device. If you connect a computer and calibrate to that, you would select full to match.
The new setting on the PS3 is useful for those who use a computer monitor. They can change the PS3 output to match the monitor rather than having to re-calibrate the computer image.
and why do we still have SD material on BDs? Isn't that one of the advantages of all that capacity, even the extras can be HD. ;)
Sure, but that assumes the material was produced in HD in the first place. There are a lot of extras that were produced in SD that shouldn't just be left off because it isn't HD. Even today, many extras are being shot on SD video. Some material is a product of its time and can't just be replaced, such as on-set footage or something involving someone who has passed away. In addition, studios may not want to spend the money to produce new HD extras when there are existing extras. It also saves on disc space. Really, is it that big of a deal that an interview is shot in HD or not? :)

oh I know, the second comment was tongue in cheek.
UxiSXRD 05-24-07, 02:55 AM Well we can cross a great many of the desired items off. A few notables are still left. DTS-HDMA.
I noticed that 6.1 DTS-ES is still coming across as 5.1 DTS when set to LPCM. It works correctly when BD/DVD settings output set to bistream. PS3 should autodetect this when set to output LPCM because I know I ain't gonna change it all the time and will ignore the 6.1 discrete DVD tracks as PCM is one of the major reasons I love using the PS3 as my player to my HDMI Denon!
Ok, haven't got the 1.80 update yet, but will get it tonight. I modified some of the list that the press release claims to have adressed, but I would appreciate help checking through the list on post #1 to check for errors.
Also, can anyone confirm if any of these need to be moved to the Fixed category:
-intermittent freezes approx. 10 seconds during BD playback, introduced in version 1.5, possibly caused by wifi connection (workaround: disable wireless before watching movie, or reset default settings in XMB)
-fix the game resolution downconvert for HDTVs without 720p input, i.e. 1080i support for all games
-improve compatibility with last-gen controllers in PS1/2 mode, PS button restriction (e.g. Guitar Hero SG)
-interaction with PSP for media files
-option to automatically shut console down (standby mode) after downloads complete
-upscaling to 1080p
-stream pics, movies and music off networked PCs, Macs or NAS devices
-VGA support
-support for separate output resolution based on activity (movie, game, etc.)
-improve support for DVI displays
THANKS for your help!

There isn't a fix for all games. Going forwared this is covered, but games that game out before Sony made 960x1080 available to developers need to be patched.
and there was a PS1/PS2 controller update in v1.7
freestyle 05-24-07, 02:23 PM I'm pretty sure you get logged off of the PSN when you go into a movie.
I would think you SHOULD have two options... (added in a future update)
1.) Status during DVD/BD Video Playback = Offline / Unavailable / Available
2.) Message notifications during DVD/BD Video Playback = ON / OFF

The part I was refering to was the Guitar Hero. From what I understand you can get an adapter that lets you play Guitar Hero 1, but it doesn't work right on Guitar Hero 2.

If by .avi you mean divx/xvid that all depends on licensing rights and if Sony is even pursuing those licenses. There will be more updates, clearly this one was focused on video and networking with external devices, i.e. PSP remote play and DNLA. With DNLA streaming organization is handled on the PC side.
Hopefully 1.90 will be an organization update for the XMB as it is needed.

The 640k problem still exists and I still live with no Blue Rays that don't have DTS, so since I've purchased the PS3 I've only purchased 2 Blue Ray discs. I don't buy the bull-**** receiver problem. There may be a problem with the receivers, but when every other use of dolby digital, dts, multi-channel plays fine EXCEPT for Blue Ray then there's a problem with the nature of the stream and it should be dealt with on the PS3 side. I mean, is it more reasonable to expect Sony to fix my receiver for free (which they won't do and can't guarantee it will work) or for Sony to make a software update that sends out a standard dolby digital stream? I have been dealing with Sony and their useless tech support for months now on this issue. Yarrghh.

That's because almost every other use of DD is 448kbps or lower. I don't know why some receivers can accept full-bitrate DTS but not a DD rate that's less than half that bitrate, but it's true. It probably had something to do with 448kbps being the practical limit on DVD. However, there is at least one DVD that contains a 640kbps track. Buy or rent the Pink Floyd Pulse DVD, and see if you can play the 640kbps track on it.
What they would need to do is create a software solution to compress PCM to DD or DTS on the fly. That may be a low priority for them, plus they'd have to make sure it works with TrueHD.
BTW, Casino Royale and Monster House BDs have 448kbps tracks. There may be others, but those are all I know of right now.
Mattardo 05-27-07, 09:19 AM Ah, that's good info. I can watch Sleepy Hollow because it has a DTS track, but Corpse Bride has only DD. I was toying with running the audio to my sound card on my PC and having it convert it and then output it to the analog multi-jacks, but then discovered that Audigy demands you buy extra I/o modules and crap to do that. Is there a place that lists bit-rates and hz, etc for Blue Rays? I can't even find one that lists all the DTS discs. I don't have PUlse, just the Wall heh.

Under DVD/BD there is the choice of RGB and component output, perhaps people have component enabled under this screen and RGB full is only being done for XMB and games.

I set the DVD/BD setting to RGB and it still reset to "limited" instead of "full" but read as "full" everytime a BD or DVD was played. Playing a PS3 game stayed as "full". So this is a bug.

tingham 06-01-07, 08:08 PM hey daverj..great job with this thread..alot of work and much appreciated by all..I am sure. How about adding a option to view whether the ps3 is connected to a wireless router using wireless protocol 802.11b or 802.11g in the Settings and Connections Status List under Settings/Network Settings in the xmb..This would be a nice feature for those of us that have to use both 802.11b and 802.11g in our homes. And it would tell us if the ps3 is using 802.11b or 802.11g wireless protocol. You could say..just a suggestion.
Ability to display wireless protocol in the Settings and Connections Status List.
thanks

YOU MUST UPDATE YOUR SYSTEM! or whatever the heck is says. No way around it since I cannot sign in without the update.
OK, start the download (wonder how long this will take) ...meanwhile go back behind the equipment, again, to pull the USB cable off the DVR and place it on the front of the console, etc. .... Guess what, my time is up and I now have other things to do and whatever the heck I thought I was gonna do is loong gone. Thanks SONY!
I wonder what's gonna happen when the little ones come to visit and I'm not there when they get the message? I guess I should train everyone who visits on how to perform a system update.
Enough ranting from me, besides I've got to go put that USB cable back behind the equipment where it belongs. (till 1.82 comes out)

Yeah, it would be nice if they could at least make the non-critical ones optional. Naturally they will want people to update before going online when it comes time to patch a big security hole (for example, a system hack/exploit or cheating in online games), but some of these little fixes could wait.
Updated for 1.81. I don't have access or have been able to reproduce some of these bugs anymore, so I'm wondering if they are fixed: Can anyone report that the following are still a problem? If not, I'm going to move this to the fixed section:
-fix occasional lock-up when entering text in message
-identify/fix problem with controller losing connection
-fix glitch: playing back full length MPEG2 .ps (program stream) movie from HDD halts abruptly at around 15 minutes

How about adding an auto-update option? Leave your PS3 on and it'll update itself when an update is available. Preferably w/o having the controller connected! :D

Nobody bothered to mention it because we just assumed it could do it (pass DTS-HD MA and TrueHD as bitstream). Nobody could try it because there were no HDMI 1.3 receivers. Then we found out it can't, so yes, it should be added to the list.
Have separate settings for resolutions for movies and games been mentioned yet? Some people have gotten better results with 720p output to their 720p displays, but they can't just leave the 1080 choices unchecked all the time because then, 1080p games would be downscaled to 480p. It would be nice if there was a setting for 720p for BD movies while games could still be output at 1080p.

Yea, that's on the list as "-support for separate output resolution based on activity (movie, game, etc.) "
List updated for previous 2 suggestions.
coffeerox 06-21-07, 09:10 AM 1:1 pixel mapping for games. We have it for movies and I'm pretty sure if my Geforce2 card can do it on it's hardware level, the PS3 can do it on the hardware level. Most HDTV users probably wouldn't need it, but a monitor user such as myself would greatly appreciate it. Not all monitors come with pixel mapping but ever since I've found my Geforce 2 can do it then I've come to expect it on the PS3.
1:1 pixel mapping for games.
Someone will need to clarify, but I believe pixel mapping is a monitor setting and not a function of what's being sent to the monitor...?
I'm not sure what the PS3's role would be in this.

I think he's asking for the PS3 to output its image in a resolution other than the native resolution of the content, but to maintain 1:1 pixel mapping by using borders. For instance, it would output a 1680x1050 image (common for widescreen monitors) with a 1280x720 window in the middle where the game is, and black bars around it. The idea is to avoid monitor scaling, which can degrade the image and/or cause it to be stretched (since WS monitors are usually 16:10).

It's already in there as "-ability to send all next gen audio formats via bitsream"
Mattardo 06-23-07, 02:56 PM Just checking back in on this thread... anyone sending these requests out yet? Or are we still waiting for a random Sony employee or engineer to accidentally stumble into this thread and have the desire and ability to suggest these things to their boss? Eh? Lotta good ideas here, just wondering about the delivery system.

this needs to be one of their top priorities right now

Pleas let me know if this doesn't make sense.
ToddUGA 06-28-07, 08:01 PM How about the ability to play Region 0 PAL DVD's?
Saleen4971 06-29-07, 12:34 AM i sitll want it to automaticly exit video playback when its done, like my 360 does. instead of jsut stopping the video on a black screen

Are you wanting PAL DVD playback converted for NTSC monitors?
UxiSXRD 06-29-07, 12:04 PM I don't see anything about having enhanced IR support via USB dongle (all bluetooth remote commands, including a way to map/assign playstation button) for the universal remote guys.

Added. ...we can dream. :o
-ability to reset cooling fan speed to low without restart (only if internal temp is at safe level)
This would be nice.
I'm not sure if this has been mentioned or if it's possible, but I wish the PS3 could run more efficiently.
I'm not even sure if that's possible. I'd love to leave it idle, surf the web, browse the PS store, or play a DVD, without the afterburners kicking in. I don't think those activities should require as much power as they're requiring now. I know people with "silent" PS3s could care less.
Maybe this is just the nature of the PS3 beast to constantly sprint when, depending on the application, it could just walk.
Hi DaverJ, could you add this one to the list?
- support for more than 50 friends in the friends list (at least 100)
My clan has more than 70 people in it, so we are having a lot of problems. We hope that Sony raises the maximum number of friends from 50 to at least 100.

DVD subtitles are pre-rendered images, not text, so no font/color selection. Maybe they could be moved around, not sure. It sounds like Blu-Ray supports DVD style subtitles plus XML based subtitles that could probably allow changes to how they are rendered. Don't know if any players support it though.

Eric_Connelly 07-07-07, 10:15 AM A biggie for me...mouse support in games.
I rented Resistance...one of my biggest problems because of hand fatigue is FPS's, plus their are a PITA to control.
I'd love to be able to use a mouse and keyboard in those games, just like on my PC.
I know its not a PC but you cannot deny that it is a far superior interface for FPS.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that ^^^ is a function of the software (game). I can see no reason if a game is written for USB mouse support the PS3 couldn't do it.

Don't know if you seen this but here is a link http://gear.ign.com/articles/799/799262p1.html
Its called the frag fx, replaces the regular controller, fully functional like a sixaxxis, and supposedly even licensed by sony. Haven't seen it locally but has already been released. I think this would be the closest thing to a mouse for first person shooters.
Eric_Connelly 07-08-07, 09:54 AM Thanks I'll look into that piece.
Another enhancement. This is a big one for me since it is just poor programming and should have been caught.
When your displaying pictues make the PS3 count correctly.
We have some folders with 3,000 pictures in them from trips and things like that. Got the media server working well and we were going over some vacation pics. We noticed pics out of order.
Here is what happens. We're looking at Florida Trip_1079, then the next image is Florida Trip_108, then Florida Trip_1080.
Every 10 photo's there is one out of order.

It sounds like it's reading a single multiple digit left to right as opposed to right to left...? So in the PS3's ordering 10 would come after 1 and before 2?

It's using a standard alpha numeric sort. In order for the sort to work properly, at least the way you want it to, the names must have the same number of characters. For example:
Florida Trip_0001
Florida Trip_0002
...
Florida Trip_0010
Florida Trip_0011
...
Florida Trip_0100
Florida Trip_0101
...
If you're viewing the pics from a media server, isn't it the server that is doing the sorting?
Do any other BluRay players have this ability?
On my old Panasonic DVD-F65, I can move subtitles (down direction only) as far as I want. This works really well in widescreen movies which have a black bar on the bottom, where I can move most of the text, minimizing the amount of picture blocked by the subtitle. I can also tone down the brightness of the text. Some of these subtitles are ridiculously bright and really detract from the viewing experience.
I was hoping this feature would be available on the Panasonic BD players but I haven't seen it yet on any BD or HD-DVD players at all. This is very frustrating to me as a heavy subtitle user.

Ah, OK.
I added the request for moving subtitles - thanks!
I want Sony to fix the issue with Motorola Bluetooth headsets, I have the 350 model but other motorola bluetooth headsets have been having problems since one of Sonys updates. Some people have said just buy another headset but I don't really feel I should have to since this headset was working perfectly until about update 1.7(I think it was).

What's the issue?

Basically it won't work with any game now CAC , Motorstrom. RFOM, Home Beta. It will appear in the accessories options and even will show that the voice is registering but once you try to play a game it doesn't work. Someone told me in some other thread it is interefering with something now once they made an update but I really have no clue what is going on. It use to work on all my games before about update 1.7.

Ok, I added -identify problem with certain Motorola Bluetooth headsets not working after 1.7 in the bugs sections. Please report back if it works with future updates.

If only this wasn't vapor ware i think it would be a great solution.

I've watched this product sit around for over 4 years now wondering if someone would ever get it out the door.
I'd like to chime in and request the ability to adjuct for overscan (like with xbmc or even a few current games). I've seen it mentioned before, but didn't see it on the official list.
Another function that I haven't seen mention, but I used quite a lot with xbmc was the "photo shuffle" function. It is a lot more fun to look at photos in random order than in sequential order.
Just remember one more thing I'd like to see..... As far as I can tell, when you view your albums stored on the PS3 (not streaming from Tversity, etc), you can view artist, then for some reason, after choosing an artist you get all their songs (albeit listed in order with an indication of album). Why doesn't the PS3 move from an artist folder, then to a series of album folders, then finally to listing the songs (i.e., why does it jump from artist to song?). I've got my songs stored in individual "album folders" underneath each "artist folder". Does the PS3 remove all of these folders when saving to the HDD?
So.. in summary :) , my 3 requests are
1. the ability to tweak the visual settings to fix overscan
2. the ability to "shuffle" pictures during a slideshow
3. the addition of "album folders" to the xmb after selecting an artist.

Added #2 and #3, good points.
Wouldn't #1 be covered by either of these?:
-1:1 pixel mapping for off-resolutions
-option to resize game screen size

yes, you are completely right. for some reason, I didn't make the connection between 1:1 pixel mapping and overscan....duh.
Thanks.
underonesun 07-19-07, 01:31 AM If I remember right they updated the h264 codec. I can't verify yet I still have an older update.
PhoenixCoyote 07-19-07, 05:30 AM The option to pass raw DSD 1-bit/2.8MHz audio over HDMI. Currently the PS3 passes decimated 24-bit, 174.6KHz over HDMI when playing DSD audio. There are receivers, like my Yamaha RX-V2700, that can accept raw DSD over HDMI. Why can't passing raw DSD be made an option setting?

Yeah they support High Profile (HiP) with the update IIRC
Also came across the 1.90 update features, already out in Japan and due to bereleasd in the US in a couple days;
• Ability to rearrange games on the XMB
• Option menu now includes "eject disk"
• Press triangle to eject games/CDs/movies in the XMB
• XMB backgrounds
• Change the folder classification
• Emoticons
• Change CD output to 44.1/88.2/176.4kHz
• Force 24Hz output for Blu-ray over HDMI
• Change PS3 video settings in-game
• "Bit Mapping" in the "Music Setting"
• Save AVCHD type animations from a Memory Stick
• Change settings like upscaling while playing PS and PS2 games
• Add bookmarks
• Web browser security function in the browser's tool section
• Avatar moves during audio visual chat
I know many wanted forced 24 frame support. Also, what is change folder classification and is that one step closer to being able to create folders? Hmmm
Saleen4971 07-23-07, 06:52 PM i woudl also like to be able to select multiple files, and copy them from source to source.
for example, if i have 15 images on an SD card that i need on a USB flash drive. i have to to to image 1, press triangle, copy to HD. then go to the HD, find image 1, press triangle, copy to USB storage device.
i wish i coudl select images 1-15 at once, then copy right to USB storage
i woudl also like to be able to select multiple files, and copy them from source to source.
Added, thanks.
It looks like the next update is going to take care some of the more popular smaller items on this list.
Jules343 07-24-07, 01:31 AM Hey Dave,
I have not updated to 1.9 yet, but I heard you no longer need the controller hooked up via USB for the update.
Cocteau 07-24-07, 07:54 AM • Force 24Hz output for Blu-ray over HDMI
Hey Jules,
Thanks for the heads up on the 1.9, but what exactly is this? We're already getting the 24Hz output, but is Force 24Hz something new?
Thanks!
