View Full Version : Official AVS request list for PS3 system upgrades
Hey Dave,
I have not updated to 1.9 yet, but I heard you no longer need the controller hooked up via USB for the update.
Great to hear! I'm looking forward to the US release of 1.9.

hehe
Dave the US release has been live for several hours. :D
pellucidity 07-25-07, 12:37 AM 1.9 has a step back for me... the new output frequencies break DTS-CD playback over HDMI. Workaround: disable these frequencies manually.
I would also like more control of the order of the games menu - left stick to choose a game and right to move it.

Yeah, the DTS data is encoded on the CD so that playing it normally over a digital connection will send the appropriate data to a receiver. The higher frequencies (anything other than 44.1 khz) resample the data, destroying the DTS signal.
Is there really a benefit to resampling CD audio to a higher bitrate anyway?

At first I was going to add this to bugs list, but it sounds like an added feature (more output frequencies over HDMI) doesn't support certain rare instances and can be disabled -- so I added it to enhancement request.
Is this fair?
Also, list updated... please report if I missed any fixes.
Next and previous are mapped to the L1/R1 buttons in the PSstore now.
SAVholic 07-25-07, 05:12 PM Upscale 720p PS3 games to 1080p.
It only does this with ps1/ ps2 games and DVD's rigth??
underonesun 07-25-07, 07:34 PM I see mention of 24Hz, are people talking about 24 frames/second?

Not sure about PS3 games but why not? BTW PS3 can also downscale to 720p for those with 720p sets.

Yes,

correct.
For this to oocur with PS3 games, at the moment, would require a patch for the game.

I believe that started in 1.82
Baccusboy 07-26-07, 10:41 PM I want DVD upscaling via Component, and not just HDMI. Some TVs aren't very compatible with the PS3 via HDMI, and suffer from excessive Banding, screen door issues, etc. I have to use component.

Sorry, but this is just not going to happen. The DVD Forum's licensing program does not allow it. All you can do is create "backups" of your titles and play those.
underonesun 07-26-07, 11:28 PM A one-button power off would be good. Especially the external button, but if it was via the BT remote that would be ok.
Chris22783 07-26-07, 11:45 PM I would like to see the PSN connection maintained while doing anything other than playing a PS3 game (watching a movie or playing a PS/PS2 game). I see no reason to stop my downloads just to watch a movie :(

I can see at least one reason, there's only one harddrive and perhaps when playing video from BD it uses harddrive to buffer and reads from harddrive since it's faster. So any other writing to the harddrive might cause issues with the display of the BD. Not saying they couldn't find a way to get around this.

Just as a standalone player does not need an HDD.

I think the PS3 automatically cuts out the online connection when you watch a movie so that you don't have pop ups telling you when someone goes online or off. Perhaps they should just have it cut out the pop ups?

Then we would have the hardcore gamer/casual movie watcher say they want to know if people are coming, going or messaging them.
It is fine the way it is. If you want to download while watching a movie, why can't one do the same thing and let it download over nite or while doing something else for two hours.
What is the mentality of "having" to download while watching a movie. Two hours? The other 22 hours in the day one can't download?

Why doesn't BR need buffering? Buffering isn't always done because it's needed it's more of an advanced feature. In the case of any optical drive I'd think it would be more efficient to buffer as much as possible to disc (or memory or both) and then stream from there. harddrive uses less power and produces less heat. A stand-alone player doesn't have an harddrive but that doesn't mean it doesn't need it, it keeps the price down not to have it. I'll bet most stand-alone players buffer a certain amount to memory.
underonesun 08-01-07, 12:37 AM Ok, earlier I asked to have a one-button power off, so I wouldn't have to turn on the tv to turn off the PS3. Well it turns out that if you hold your finger on the power button for a few seconds it will power off the PS3.
Still would be nice to do via BT remote.

You CAN shut off the PS3 via the BT remote. Hold down the PS button (the one above Select and Start buttons) a couple seconds. It'll ask you if want to shut off the controller or shut off the system.
metalcore 08-02-07, 11:33 PM Dolby Digital XMB
Dolby Digital XMB
When my PS3 starts it is in DD 5.1.
It is the content that is not 5.1, particularly trailers that seem to be 2 ch. PCM.

So you are a proponent of limiting the flexibility the user (you, the consumer) has, rather than encouraging the manufacturer (Sony) to increase the flexibility/usefulness of their product ?
Just because you don't feel it's important to be able to download while watching a movie, other's most certainly will.
Why on earth would you care if Sony implements this functionality ?
And sometimes when I download, I want to pass the time by doing something else... like say watching a movie.

You are thinking that because I said something that I am a proponent of limiting user flexibility? I never said that. I am really a proponent of accepting that sometimes we can't always get what we want and we need to accept it and move on. I am a proponent of getting what we need more than what we want for obvious things that can make the PS3 better. This isn't a functionality now, but it maybe.
I am a proponent of making the unit better, but also will play devil's advocate for stating that we always want and want and then bitch about a product being less than when we don't get what we want.
The eject from the PS3 controller being added was what some wanted also. Was it necessary? Absolutely not, especially when it is a single disc player that you have to get up to change the disc anyway. Let's be realistic. The only thing the eject did was save the 2 seconds one had to wait while getting up to hit the eject on the main unit. It is a novelty. I can see on a multi disc changer it being useful where you want to eject and take out a disc while another is playing, but with the PS3 this isn't the case. Thinking further, I guess if the eject button on the main unit went out it would be good to have it on the controller, but then would anyone want to have a unit with a main function button on it not working for a period of time anyway?
And sometimes when I download, I want to pass the time by doing something else... like say watching a movie.
Or sleeping? I know it HAS to be done while watching a movie. so one can get right to the download after the movie is over.
I hear you guys I do.
SirDrexl 11-28-07, 12:14 PM Is this not being updated anymore?
Is this not being updated anymore?
No, it's hard to maintain a list like this because each software release has too few changes, especially our wishes listed here. :o And sometimes the update doesn't indicate all that's changed.
I'll delete this post soon.
kbajus@comcast.n 01-15-08, 05:29 PM does anyone have a link to the settings in the ps3 main system menu (with explanations?). I purchased a unit but have not found the enclosed literature very substantial. I am having some challenges configuring my front projector, receiver and ps3for blue ray 1080p optimal playback over hdmi thanks.
A simple, but valuable, addition:
- Display the time when we press the PS button.
useful when we're killing time and the wife keeps nagging that it's time to go.

PSP does this and yes I really wish the PS3 did it too.
My biggest complaint with the PS3, the crappy Store, is now being rectified.
Pretty much every feature requested by people (save DTS and in-game XMB, both of which Sony has said they are working on) has been implemented. PS3 when it came out was quite feature poor but if one reads early reviews its almost like they are talking about a different system. So much of what was said early on does not apply. Now we are getting down to mostly tiny fringe features.
Yeah, I abandoned this thread because it looks like Sony is doing a good job addressing issues as they go. I think the PS3 might have launched a year too early, but I guess they had to put something out.
I wouldn't mind the PS3 to get Internet Radio like the PSP... I use that a lot.
Tigerriot 04-07-08, 10:33 AM For me in game XMB is so fundementally needed to make the PS3 feel like a complete online experience, that I can't even really think about additional features until that is in.
IMO it is absolutely ridiculous just how much time they've wasted working on other non essential features already, and we still don't have in game XMB 18 months after launch. Every time I think about that my mind is blown again.
Gradthrawn 04-07-08, 10:37 AM And sometimes when I download, I want to pass the time by doing something else... like say watching a movie.
Despite the fact that you're logged out of PSN when watching movies, the internet connection remains, and downloads continue. At least, that's what my testing has shown.
TravKoolBreeze 04-07-08, 12:53 PM What I'm hoping for is support for the mkv container subtitle support (srt, ass, etc) and loosen the restrictions on the h264 codec. For the PSP, support for divx/xvid.
Vizion47 04-07-08, 04:11 PM I would like Skype and bluetooth A2DP support. :) comeon sony you can do it
Protopet 04-07-08, 04:15 PM Skype would be cool, but what is the BT A2DP about?
syncguy 05-19-08, 02:09 AM I wish to find out whether the PS3 features/functions request list is still active. I expect some of these have been already implemented and perhaps some others are still in the pipeline. Thanks.

This list has been abandoned.
Sony handles small (often invisible) upgrades so frequently that keeping a list of what changes every software revision is too much of a task.
I'll PM Kyser to lock it.
