Also, I thought about a request for adding rumble support, but I knew better. :D

Hey... this might be why no older controllers will work in PS1/2 mode! ;)

This list is really good - even little things I've been nitpicking for like eject from the controller are here, and my current biggest concern, PS1/PS2 games looking terrible, are present. Three more things to edit/add to the list:

1.) Resolve the bug where when you play a Blu-Ray movie there is no sound when you play a game next until you restart the system.
2.) Option to not auto sign-in to Playstation Network without unchecking the save password option (I want to save my password, but I don't want the system to login automatically).
3.) The ability to recognize the .ts extension, to be able to play them sequentially either because they are numbered or via a playlist, and the ability to decode AC3 audio in the MPEG2 Transport Stream. In other words, full transport stream support similiar to how myHD cards, etc handle .ts files.

Keep it going!

PS: What is the Dolby Digital glitch?

I don't know if this has been covered yet or not, but how about the ability to pick up a download that had to be cancelled.

For instance, I'm in the middle of downloading a demo (BTW, is it just me or does this take FOREVER!) and something happens that causes the network to be thrown off for a minute. If this happens, I have to start all over again.

On XBL, whenever you started to download something, if the download was interrupted, it would pick up wherever it left off the next time you began to download it again.

Hey Rob...

Thanks for the input. The answer to your P.S. is your #1. ;) I'll add your #2, but I'm confused about #3... can you restate it as simply as possible? .ts files are HD movies, correct? And you are saying the PS3 doesn't play .ts files?

Brilliant. I didn't think about trying the PS button... I thought that button just turned the console or controller on/off and stopped the game to get back to the dashboard.

Thanks Bad_Boy -- you just scratched two requests off the list!

maybe a stupid question but how do you queue up your downloads and do other stuff? I haven't really tried as mine is being replaced right now but I don't remember seeing that option. Also has anyone been able to copy demo games and trailers to an external HDD? I tried before having to send it in and it didn't recognize my western digital usb 2.0 external hard drive.

Thanks,

J

That first bug is a BIG ONE  ! I currently have a SONY  rear projection that does not support a native 720p format signal and when it receives one it converts it to 480p. The tv is capable of 1080i and I wish it scaled the signals up not down! The model of my SONY tv is a KP-46WT500 and features a DVI input with no HDMI so I use a hdmi-dvi cable for hook-up. I sure hope this is one of if not THE main concern for sony! I dont want to watch br movies or play br games in 480p! GREAT job putting this list together Daverj ;) ....I hope sony will do something soon

You can't... it's a request we are making to Sony.
Also has anyone been able to copy demo games and trailers to an external HDD? I tried before having to send it in and it didn't recognize my western digital usb 2.0 external hard drive.

This should probably be added to the list. Does anyone know anything about external HD support via USB? It would be it have to be formatted a certain way... possibly available via Unix OS only?

I'm trying to figure out the wording for that last request.

It's an enhancement request and you could label it as "Support for external HDD".

-boot to dashboard option

I think I kinda found a solution to it. Press the PS button while starting the system, even if you have a disc already in the system it should go to the XMB. Either that or move the directional pad once you see the initial XMB. I'm not quite sure, I'll have to test around with it some more. But I had a game in the system before startup, and it did not boot directly to the game after I turned it on.

A point of clarity and some emphasis on this. I have a 720p panel but I could get much better PQ using 1080i and having the TV downscale (with 3:2 pulldown) than I get with a 720p signal. All of this boils down to simply 1) having a 1080i option on HDMI and 2) using it correctly.

* So for me and a lot of people, 1080i on HDMI is a big one.

Also, the system doesn't offer any config options for refresh rate. I could maybe use 1080p/24 or 1080p/30 over component if the unit would allow me to select it.

What the heck, while we're at it I wouldn't mind seeing a 1366x768 option for all us flat-panel users.

Excellent list.

:D Really minor enhancement:

- The PS button on the controller should light up.

I know on some of the dev units it would light up sometimes. I think when it was charging.

Would be very cool, but I don't think they could accomplish this with a software update. :D That's what this list is trying to concentrate on.

I've had zero problems except for a controller that some times loses connection with the ps3. this causes whatever I was doing last to keep happening as opposed to the game just pausing itself like the 360. has got me killed 4 times in resistance. a mild issue imo. overall I'm very pleased. its hooked up to my SXRD through an hdmi 82vsx pioneer elite reciever.

I read about this controller losing connection issue all over the place, we should add it to the list. This is certainly a defect.

Good point Felgar, added 768p to the list.
Ok, after having confirmed the behaviour on my system where the system is switching to 1080i automatically for Blu-Ray output, I'd like to alter the resolution output change request a bit. Obviously I'd like to see 768p in the list of available resolutions...

But then I'd like to see a different setting for each main function of the PS3. Like, for games and game Demo's I might prefer 720p, but then for Blu-Ray and downloaded movie content I'd clearly prefer 1080i. I should be able to set these as preferences. Once they fix the 1080i bug, what will happen for me is that I'll have to be constantly switching between 720p and 1080i depending on if I'm watching a movie or playing a game. So my suggestion is: Function-based video output preferences.

DaverJ

Function-based video output preferences.

Great point, added.

It might be nice to be able to switch output resolutions on-the-fly, like my DirecTivo. Added that one too.

PS3 simotaneously feed A/V through HDMI and Audio through Optical

What are you supposed to do if you feed a 1080p projector through HDMI? What are you supposed to do about the audio?

No I mean after the system is started, when the XMB is about to come up right before the game loads. It's just a temporary fix until they get the option working.

With regard to 768p, can you confirm your display's EDID structure reports 768p as a supported configuration?

I'm asking because my Sharp AQUOS also has the same native resolution, but it does not say so in its EDID structure.

In general, a source device will not output at a given resolution unless the EDID record sent out by the display reports it as supported.

The manual states 1366x768 as an acceptable and supported input format, so there is an assumption on my part that this means it's part of the EDID. I havent verified this in practice with an HTPC or anything like that though.

Edit: Oh, I should point out that the EDID is not a concern with the PS3. It will let me try 1080p even though the TV doesn't support that res and clearly wouldn't have it in the EDID.

Wow! If PS3 ignores EDID data, you can put that on the list as well. Sending a signal a display cannot support could kill it.

I dunno. I can confirm that my DVI input does not support 1080p and that the system will let me switch to 1080p at which point my screen goes blank until the 30 second timeout on the video settings. Who knows, maybe the TV is reporting the wrong EDID info, but I would doubt it. I have a 50phd8uk Panasonic Industrial Plasma with the TY-42TM6D DVI input.

Do you have a laptop you could connect to the set?

Then you could download the free version of this utility:

Heres a few upgrades sony could easily make:

1) Better web browser functionality.
2) Make Music folders accessible from external hard drive while music is still playing from it already. Also make available for play in game. maybe even a playlist creator in the music player?
3) SUPPORT IPOD/IPOD VIDEO AS USB DEVICE!! I don't know if we need to get apple to do this or sony, but if this thing could play the video and audio as seemlessly from the ipod as from my external hd it would be amazing.
4) Allow option to set external HD as save device.

Just some thoughts so far. I was kind of shocked the ipod didn't work because both my flash card reader and my external hd were plug and play easy. who knows, but it seems like sony could get all these things available by early-mid next year no problem, hope they read this thread...

Hey DaverJ

I have the Hitachi PJ-TX100. I have blue jeans cable (DVI) with a DVI > HDMI male converter. I also tried a shorter DVI cable with a Monster Adapter.

I bought an RCA DVI > HDMI cable, eliminating the need for a converter. Still not working. I just don't think the PS3 wants to talk to the Pj tx100 over DVI. I have to rely on Sony for a fix. Hopefully it will happen.

My feedback after a few hours...

Things that need to be fixed ASAP:

- Video/audio set-up:
Most users will connect their system to their HDTV set via HDMI for video only.
They will connect their system to their A/V receiver via digital optical for audio.

When I tried such a set-up, I noticed the system appears to send Dolby Digital to my HDTV set over HDMI.

Expected behavior: When digital optical audio output is selected, no audio output should occur over HDMI.

- Wireless network connectivity:

With firmware 1.10, this works erratically or not at all depending on the kind of Access Point you use.
High latency and high packet loss are frequent.

- SIXAXIS:

Very infrequently (2-3 times in a 2-hour session playing Resistance), the SIXAXIS controller stops responding for 2-4 seconds.
After 2-4 seconds, the controller becomes responsive again.

- Gaming/Movie Playback:

As reported by many on AVS, when you go from movie playback to playing a game, audio output does not work properly.
For instance, you get PCM output in the XMB, but no Dolby Digital in Resistance.
You need to put the system in stand-by mode and turn it back on to get sound in Resistance.

- Text input via on-screen keyboard:

For reasons unknown, text input can cause the system to hang permanently.
When this happens, you have to flip the power switch to reboot the system.

UPDATE - 1.11 released last night (no download or on the U.S. Network Update page (http://www.us.playstation.com/ps3/network/updates) yet)

From what can be observed, changes include:
New Account Management Icon under friends list (same functionality as pressing triangle on your own name)
Web browser seems to have gotten a speed increase.
Have not experienced the "system hang/freeze-up on text input" issue
A number of people are stating that the HDMI sound issue has been resolved

Enhancements:
-boot to dashboard option

FYI, you can hold left on your d-pad (or any direction, I'm assuming) during booting and the system will not boot directly into a game and instead keep you at the XMB.

We hoped to get a rep from Sony of America to look over the list. However, word has it all software decisions like this come from the home office in Japan.

So my goal is to just put our wants and needs out there in hopes that this list finds the right sympathetic eyes who might be able to make something happen.

I updated to 1.11.

Surprise, surprise...

Dolby Digital is no longer output over HDMI. So, my HDTV set no longer complains about receiving an unsupported audio signal. My A/V receiver still receives Dolby Digital via the digital optical output, as it should.

So, it would seem they fixed that.

It's good news really.

Now, it would be nice if they actually produced change logs that truly list what defects have been fixed.

Someone could correct me if this is supported (just got the unit last night). I noticed when selecting sound for the Optical cable Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 were available options (which I checked).

There was no box to check DTS 6.1ES (or other 6 and 7 channel set-ups). I know that DolbyTrueHd and DTSHD are onlly delivered via HDMI -- but why is the optical cable limited to only supporting 5.1 channel formats?

I would like to add: Support 6.1 and 7.1 channel formats through the Optical cable such as DTS 6.1ES and Dolby Digital EX.

Some of the more knowledgable people on the forum may be able to express this request more accurately (or correct me if this is already supported).

Thanks for the input. The answer to your P.S. is your #1. ;) I'll add your #2, but I'm confused about #3... can you restate it as simply as possible? .ts files are HD movies, correct? And you are saying the PS3 doesn't play .ts files?

This question was never answered. The PS3 requires that the .ts (transport stream) be renamed .mpg in order for it to play. However, if the audio in the transport stream is ac3, only the video will play. So we need support for the .ts extension and support for ac3 in mpeg2-ts.

DaverJ, please please add the Dolby Digital problem with Blu-ray movies that I've seen at least 4 users on this forum mention.

This is NOT the digital sound drop out problem when going back to games after watching a movie.

This is the problem with playing a 640k Dolby Digital stream through the optical cable. The PS3 is not delivering the signal properly. It's happening on receivers of all quality levels, which are getting streams of this quality just fine from HD-DVD players, but not the PS3. There is a closed thread from 11/18 entitled "PS3 Dolby Digital Problem?" where a few users were talking about this, but it got wrapped up and confused with the other sound problem which has now been fixed.

Again, only DTS soundtracks on BD movies are playing correctly through the optical cable (which means problems for the vast majority of BD movies which have DD and PCM) and it's been mentioned by at least 4 members of this forum, though not on this particular thread.

Thanks for compiling this list.

I have had my PS3 for two days. It is working flawlessly. Never have lost controller connectivity and wi-fi is perfect.

I am curious as to why the following are issues? I am just trying to understand in case there is something I am missing.

system start-up with the controller should require longer button hold down

I have to hold it down two seconds and it has never been an issue for me. I am not saying it might not be for some, just curious as to what some are experiencing?

-ability to eject disc via controller

Since it is a single disc and unless you are going to have your dog or a girlfriend :) take it out so you don't have to get up, why is this an issue? If you eject it you are getting up and taking it out anyway. Isn't the button on the console enough? Or are some worried if the button on the console fails?

One huge one for me that has been mentioned is the ability to download in the background while doing something else, which is really multi-tasking. Is the hardware not able to do this or is it just a firmware issue? I would think the hardware can do both like my pc.

UPDATE: Thanks. I just wanted to pass along this update.... I have unfortunately determined that it is my receiver, and based on another thread here, I know how to describe the problem.

Basically, certain receivers aren't going to be able to handle the Dolby Digital 640k signal through optical. They just can't decode it, because they were built for the 300-400k signals from DVD. My receiver is the Sony STR-DE985, only a few years old, which provides 100w per channel and decodes Dolby Digital EX, and DTS, but can't handle the signal it's getting from BD movies. I was able to try it on a significantly older Yamaha receiver last night (the RX-V620) which can only handle basic 5.1 Dolby and DTS, yet that receiver had no trouble with the signal at all.

One rep at Sony wanted me to call back with any model #'s that I discovered had problems with the PS3, but the other rep I talked to today didn't understand and didn't seem to care that a very popular, although not brand new Sony receiver which should have no trouble with this signal, wasn't accepting it. He wanted me to send in my PS3, even though it clearly has no other issues, and this issue doesn't exist with other receivers (with my same audio cable too).

So, could you please amend this problem on the official list to confirm that a 640k audio signal through optical is too much for some current receivers to handle? Perhaps the signal should be compressed more through optical? Other people are definitely going to have this issue as the PS3 is more widely adopted, and I can't believe that the reps are just going to tell them to send it in for a replacement.

Me ... I'm off to buy a new receiver, or I might wait for the HDMI 1.3 ones.

It's an enhancement request and you could label it as "Support for external HDD".
I request this is reworded.

"Support for multiple formats on external HDD, including EXT3, HFS+ and NTFS which allow file sizes larger than 4GB."

This should also be a Defect Correction, not a feature request... IMHO anyway. :)

So far the only format I've been able to use is Fat32. Works fine once you put the videos in the VIDOES directory, but a 4GB limit kills any abilitiy to use external HDD for HDTV caps.

A few more defects.

(1) Output of Dolby Digital 5.1 when playing a stored MPEG2 PS with a valid AC3 track.

(2) Fix playback of large stored MPEG2 PS files. Currently playback halts at around 15 minutes.

With issue #1, the PS3 only outputs "Pro Logic" through optical, even when the video in quetion only has an AC3 track.

I will be posting a separate thread on issue #2 since I'm not sure about causative factors. It's still rooted in the PS3, though, as both test files I used played fine with VLC.

system start-up with the controller should require longer button hold down

I have to hold it down two seconds and it has never been an issue for me. I am not saying it might not be for some, just curious as to what some are experiencing?

I just moved the controller the other day and a passing brush on the PS button turned the system on. To call up the menus requires the 2 second push - but it seems to turn the system on, a quick push on the PS button is all that is needed. We would like the ability to change that to a 2 second push.

-ability to eject disc via controller

Since it is a single disc and unless you are going to have your dog or a girlfriend :) take it out so you don't have to get up, why is this an issue? If you eject it you are getting up and taking it out anyway. Isn't the button on the console enough?
This request often gets scoffs, as did when I posted that the HD-DVD drive on the 360 can't be ejected via remote (even though that drive comes with a remote with an eject button that doesn't eject the drive  ... but I digress). This minor inconvenience doesn't effect most people, but some of us have these units on a low rack or in a slightly inconvenient place. I like to have the disk ejecting so the try is open, or in the case of the PS3 the disk is sticking out, by the time I get to the console so I'm not waiting bending over or crouched down for the disk to come out. It's a very minor thing, but the fact that every DVD player and even back to VHS has the ability to eject via remote, it's something I'm used to and would rather not loose.

Not sure if mentioned -

You knowhow when you turn on the PS3 it defaults to one of your downloaded game/demos icons and the music for some of those are on blast (ie motorstorm and cash guns chaos), it'd be nice to either set where the start up defaults to, or control the volume of the game icons while in XMB.

Dont misunderstand me I am not nit picking, but if you picked the controller up or just moved it most likely one would do so to play the game, unless you are cleaning or a million other legitimate reasons to move it. I pick it up by the left or right knobbies that stick out and when holding it never contact the button as the joystick sought of prevents me from doing that. Just my take. I like the feature.

I had a Yamaha cd player, DVD player, and a JCV vhs that didn't have eject.

Updated thought on the eject button. Where would you put it? If you changed software so you could change one of the control buttons to be the eject button, then hitting it would eject a disc just as easily as one accidently touching or brushing the power on/off button on the controller. Now you go out for several hours to come home and find your dog chewed your 60.00 game or BD movie. If that was the case you would then have to have the gaming software set so it doesn't eject while playing a game, cd, dvd or whatever. If you had to go to a submenu to eject using the controller, by the time you did it you could get up probably several times and eject manually. Unless I am not thinking through this or missing something, I now think an eject button would not only be unnecessary, but it would be a bad idea. My guess would be the designers of the controller already thought through this and that is why it isn't available, not that it couldn't be. They thought about all the DVD/BD controls when playing movies when designing, so I am sure they didn't miss thinking through the eject button.

Hi Daver.

If I understand question 1, I can say that BDs register DD 5.1 on my amp. However, with a movie that I transferred to disk, it only shows as Pro Logic, which is 2.0. This happens even though both of my test movies only contain a DD 5.1 AC3 track (ie no 2.0 track, so the PS3 is "downsampling").

For Question 2, PS stands for Program Stream. This is the MPEG2 format used for stuff stored on disks. DVDs, for example, are MPEG2 Program Stream (PS). Transport Stream (TS) is a "packetized" version of MPEG2 used for broadcast. So anything you record from Cable over OTA will be MPEG2 TS.

According to Sony press, the PS3 is supposed to support HDTV MPEG2 PS with AC3 audio, while it only supports MPEG TS with stereo audio. As noted in the list, if you try to play MPEG2 TS with an AC3 track, you get no sound. If you play an MPEG2 PS with an AC3 track, you DO get sound, but only in stereo (pro logic), and not the full-blown 5.1 surround.

Is it Pro-Logic I or II? Not that it matters as it should be outputting 5.1 discrete channels, but pro-logic is multichannel audio. From what you are saying the PS3 sees AC3 as 2 channel audio and is then creating matrixed channels from it.
Pro-Logic:
The foundation of the multichannel home theater experience. This technology decodes source audio encoded in two-channel DolbyŽ Surround (including videocassettes, DVDs and TV broadcasts) for four-channel (Left/Center/Right/Surround) playback.
Pro-Logic II:
Sophisticated, matrix decoding technology that expands any two-channel source audio, such as CDs and stereo-encoded videocassettes, video games and TV broadcasts, to a five-channel full bandwidth (range) playback (Left/Center/Right/Left surround/Right surround), resulting in a surround experience. Found in: Stereo broadcast programming in analog, digital cable, and direct broadcast satellite (DirecTV/Dish); game consoles (Nintendo/Sony); home audio-video receivers; car receivers; decoders; PCs and laptops.

Updated thought on the eject button. Where would you put it?

If it were up to me, I would do it as an option in the PS button menu -- like hitting triangle. So when I want to eject a disk (game, DVD, whatever), I would hit PS (as if I was shutting down) and hit triangle to eject. If I don't remove the disk in 30 seconds it can pull it back in but not auto-start like in a car stereo. This option would probably be best only in XMB -- not while a movie is playing or a game is running.

It's not that big of deal, just a small thing I would like because of how I'm used to operating my HT.

My amp only supports DPL I, so I don't know about DPL II.

But yes, you are essentially correct. It takes the discrete 5.1 and creates a matrixed surround. This is, as I said, a "downconversion" because you completely lose the discrete aspect, and the LFE channel.

Far more important is the other issue I brought up. I don't think anybody has been able to play a full-length HDTV movie from the PS3's hard drive. If it's supposed to be an HDTV media hub, playing HDTV movies is an imperative!

quit option in all the "arcade" games.

"eject" option from the Triangle button menu on discs

"eject" option from PS Button menu for BD/DVD movies/games

fix glitch in games (at least Blast Factor) that takes you to a XMB menu if you are kicked off the network. It does not pause the game, so you die. every time. Retail games do not do this when you are kicked off the network.

change "home" location of XMB startup. if you only have Cash Money Chaos, for example, the PS3 starts up and plays that loud obnoxious song. every time. I suggest it be changed from "Game" to "Friends" on the XMB for startup.

already listed, auto-start option in System, just like on PSP.

Get rid of needless XMB menues when games load. Genji has a XMB menu that tells me about the autosave feature. It forces you to hit Circle for the bleeping game to even load. This is obviously a system hook, and developers can do this in software. Untold Legends tells me this in software, and the message goes away if I don't hit X.

Automatic Title Update process on games could be handled smoother. As it stands, the system downloads and installs the game update. You are then told to go back to the XMB and launch the game again. Surely this could be scripted.

All games that are programmed to optionally install cache data to the hard drive should promt you to do so the first time you load the game. Gundam, and Ridge 7 did not. Surely these types of things could be added to the technical requirements for PS3 certification of games.

A seemingly obvious one, they need to explain in detail what the firmware upgrade does in the "About" screen we click through when we install the firmware update. And I don't want a partial list, I want details.

PlayStation Store needs control refinements. Map Prev and Next (buttons on the UI already) to L1 and R1 buttons.

Skip/ignore plugin/Flash warning in web browser.

RSS Channels. PSP has it, why not the PS3?

already listed. theme settings.

OK Here are some things that need fixed in the PlayStation Store:

Item listing page should tell me how man MB/GB the file is before I download it. This is an inexcuasable oversight. This could *easily* be added to the Description field without modifying the database or UI. But it would look better, be easier to find if it was displayed under the item name.

There should be a way to jump strait to the adding funds to wallet page in Account Settings.

If you have downloaded something already (movie, game) it should let you know, and not download it again without warning (it allows this). Not only that, but it will download the same item multiple times (at least with movies).

Adding a "Whats New" and "Top Downloads" buttons on the main page would be nice. Whats New would be really helpful, as now you have to go to a Title Listing or Item Listing page to see this info. One click is always better than two.

Since it is a single disc and unless you are going to have your dog or a girlfriend take it out so you don't have to get up, why is this an issue? Don't they do this? I was watching a BD movie last night and wanted to take a bathroom break, so I grabbed the controller and hit the play/pause and nothing happen -- it was off. I'm guessing it was over an hour or so into the movie, so I believe maybe 1 hour of inactivity turns the controller off.

As was mentioned on a previous post, one of the high priority updates for BD playback is 720p downscaling. Several TVs that downscale 1080i to 720p do not implement proper de-interlacing, some time reducing the effective resolution to 540p before upscaling to 720p. If the PS3 does it from the 1080p original, the resulting resolution will be much closer to the original. I don't believe it's that hard to downscale 1080p to 720p(the GPU certainly can do it). And since the system does support HDCP, there is no security or anti-piracy reason to not support that.

Can anyone confirm this? I don't know how my controller turned off by itself....

I believe you are correct. I believe the timer on it starts when the PS3 screen darkens, such as when downloading something for awhile. Does that makes sense?

Just going over the list, you mention that the ability to zoom, enchance fonts in Browser is fixed. I have my PS3 connected to my 42PX50 Panasonic Plasma and I still can't read anything in the Browswer when standing more than 5 feet away. Is there any steps I am suppose to do in order to zoom? I have tried increasing fonts to +2 but still not coming out clear.

I have the PS3 outputting 1080p?

Anyone have any suggestions?

This is something I've been meaning to to - I split the larger fonts/zoom request and kept larger fonts as fixed, but put the zoom browser feature back up to the enhancement request list.

I can read gmail and AVS fine at +2, but sites with fixed fonts like penny-arcade are still way to small on an HDTV.

Here's one that really bugs me:

Allow image to be stretched (manually if possible) on PS2/PS1 games to eliminate the huge underscan present. This seems like a pretty easy option to add to the 'PS button' menu of PS2/1 games, and would make the experience much nicer.

I would like to second this. I'm sorry if I missed any replies, has anyone found any info regarding this?

If you are talking about audio support for standard DVDs, this is not a problem with the PS3. I just threw in a Lord of the Rings Extended DVD and my Denon read it as DTS discrete... meaning it was getting the extra DTS rear channels.

I'd really like to see the Dual Shock 3, rumble or no, it looks like a much more ergonomic design.

Software update wise... I don't really give a fig about 720p. I do wish the PS3 would upscale the 720p games to 1080i, which is my preferred setting since I know the deinterlacing behavior and modes very well my HDTV. Ultimately, this isn't as good a solution as the software developers making games for both 720p & 1080i (if not 1080p).

I also think having auto-login to PSN should be selectable, regardless of whether there's a saved pass or not.

Oh yeah, I think the network summary page should be linked whenever there's a failure to connection. The page itself was invaluable, but i didn't check the summary page until after a couple failures to connect (only resolved when I upgrade from 1.10 to 1.31 via Memory Stick).

Currently it does not seem as if the PS3 can display games in widescreen (i.e. 16:9) on 4:3 CRT 1080i TV sets. I would like to see an update that allows 1080i signal for games to be given in a 16:9 aspect ratio on the older 4:3, 1080i HDTV sets. (Black bars above and below the picture).

If anyone has figured out how to do this, let me know. I spoke with sony and they had no idea and said I had to wait for an update or buy a new TV.

Yes, the original HDTVs (6-7 years ago) were CRT, 4:3 aspect ratio sets that displayed only 480i, 480p, and 1080i. I bought mine 6 years ago and it has a beautiful 1080i HD picture. However, this is one of the sets the PS3 is not working correctly with. I can buy a new TV, but I would prefer to wait another year or so to see what happens with the PS3 from a firmware standpoint.

I would like this calibration option for PS3 games as well. The overscan on MUA is way too much in 1080i, and I have heard similar complaints about GTHD. Using the PS button and then lining a frame up on the TV should not be too hard to do (Can calibrate with the joysticks on the controller).

Yea... I don't think they will change this because of how it is designed, but I added the PS button restriction in with improved controller compatibility in PS1/2 mode. It is very frustrating.

12-28-06, 01:10 PM
Huh? My controller loses it's signal but as soon as I hit the PS button it resyncs when going to PS1/2 games. Usually I do it as soon as I see the PlayStation2 logo and it's there before the game itself has loaded. I've been playing Battlestar:Galactica for PS2 and GTA: San Andreas alot recently on my PS3, so have become very familiar with this behavior. So much so that it's interfering with my NBA07 and NHL2k7 seasons. :D

I'd like to add my support for the autoplay of Blu-ray/DVD's when inserted, but I'm thinking larger. The way the hypervisor 'sees' and organizes videos/pictures (they show up in the appropriate section of the XMB: Video, for example) that we should have a System Setting category for Auto-play.

particularly, I'd like to be able to set myself the option to autoplay BD, but to give me a 3-second or so opportunity to cancel that autoplay. To expand on the idea: insert BD disc a notification would pop up and say "Autoplay in 3, 2, 1..." and you could press "O" or "X" or whatever to cancel but if you didn't before the countdown completed, it would then autoplay to the game/BD/DVD main menu/title. It would actually be best if we could adjust that countdown time ourselves... I'm thinking anywhere between 0 and 10 seconds. The best would be if we could set it individually, say 3 seconds for a BD/DVD and 5 seconds for a game, for example.

One other thing is that I'd like to be able to reorganize the order of the Demo's//item categories. I want GT:HD to be the default game or I might want it to be on the save game folder so I don't get a music / splash screen by default.

Here's a thought. How about 540p support? Most older sets w/o 720p that are experiencing the whole 1080i/720p/480p issue could support 540p, and this is at least a little better than 480p. And if it can down scale to 480p, why not 540p?

My roomate and I have separate user accounts set up, for obvious reasons. However, when we go to play against each other in Tiger Woods, or presumably any other EA sports game, we can't play with our custom characters, unless that user is logged in. Certainly there must be away to update the firmware so you can load up another user's character when playing in two player mode.

It would be nice to have support for hd transport streams with h264 video and AC3 or MPEG-2 audio (50 and 60 Hz). In Europe all HD broadcasts are now coded in H264/AC3 ts format. This feature should also allow direct playback of AVCHD camcorder files (without the requirement to burn a DVD or Blue-Ray disc).

I see that you have on the list the ability to turn on auto-start for blu-ray discs..

It would make my PS3 experience much better if it could play lossless WMA files. seeing as PSP already plays normal WMA files i dont see this as being much of a problem, yet it still hasnt been implimented. Until then ill be continuing to transfer my entire cd collection to my PS3 in WAV (Linear PCM 16bit 44.1kHz) format. The bad part about this is that Wav files cannot have tags therefore you have to re-enter all of the song information.

I don't see anything about allowing a bluetooth keyboard/mouse to sync without USB. Received a Logitech MX5000 as a gift and would sure like to pull that little USB receiver thing since the PS3 has bluetooth on board. Works fine with it, but built in bluetooth should be fine instead of the little dongle.

With a PC, you have to have the USB receiver when you first install, but if your laptop or Apple or whatever has bluetooth in it, then you can later ditch the USB receiver once the software is installed. I imagine the PS3 analog should be to register the keyboard/mouse as separate devices.

Someone else mentioned this but it did not make the list yet.

MPEG2 PS files with AC3 5.1 audio are output with only 2 channel pcm audio over optical. It should just pass the ac3 audio to the receiver for decoding.

Multichannel audio for my media files is important so I hope this gets looked at.

If someone using HDMI for audio has had success with this working please let me know.

The BD Movies I have with AC3 soundtracks all work OK over the optical.

Didn't see this on the list, but I might have totally missed it...

Allowing resolution changes via the PS button while in-game.

Pressing the PS button now brings up a small menu of operations. It could also bring up an option to change the resolution to one of a list of already scanned for/supported resolutions. This way one doesn't have to keep changing it at the XMB level.

A free official MPEG 4 encoder that guarentees to create files that can be played on PS3. My PS3's being very picky with the types of MPEG-4 files it will play. I would think that the PS3 itself would be amazingly fast at re-encoding video considering its multithreading capabilities. I know that there's a request for any lossless codec for CD ripping but, I'd personally like to see support for FLAC playback.

Also it would be great if there where more options for organizing/viewing/navigating content in the "MUSIC" system. example: if you choose to "sort by" or "group content" being able to choose an id3 tag and then *also* be able to furhter organize by any id3 tag that is a subset of the first id3 tag. So I could "group content" by genre and then "sort by" artist and then "sort by" album.

I am having some major problems. Please add these to the list.

I have a Sony Grand Wega XBR2 60" television and a Sony STR-DE985 receiver. I am running HDMI to my tv for video and I am running Optical audio cable to my reciever.

Video on PS3 is set to HDMI. Audio is set to Optical, Bitstream, 5.1 and DD. I have fully updated the firmware and have even reformatted my ps3.

Here are my issues.

-Played Underworld Evolution and I experience audio cut outs in certain repeatable points of the movie.

-Whenever i insert a BD in to the ps3 while it is in standbye it boots up and goes to a grey screen and never starts the movie. My ps3 is then hard froze. I can only insert a BD while the XMB is loaded.

-I insert Terminator 2 and It has the little icon in the uppper right corner and it never goes away. I hear sound from the movie loading. My PS3 is then hard frozen and I need to use the switch to turn it off. Try a couple more times and finally I get video. I start the movie and this giant message appears on my TV saying it is an unsupported audio format? What the hell is this? Why would my PS3 be sending audio signals to my television via HDMI? Here is the kicker. While I see this message I get no video from the BD but 5.1 audio is coming from my reciever. So far Terminator 2 is completely unplayable on my ps3. I don't know what the deal is. A couple of times I have gotten the movie to start however it will freeze on a frame of the movie and the audio will keep going. I cannot get ride of the frozen frame and must power down the ps3. Driving me nuts. Only happens on the T2 BD

-Ice Age meltdown - perfect playback. No audio or video problems.

-Stargate - perfect playback, no audio or video problems.

From what I've read on other forums, it's an issue with how the PS3 emulates the PS2's operating environment, so theoretically it is fixable. The major hurdle we have here is that Sony isn't that willing to admit it is a problem yet.

Jules,

Whenever I insert a Blu Ray disc or DVD when the PS3 is in standby it boots up and plays it.

That's what "ought" to be happening.

Fix the fan controller software so it can slow the fan down if the temperature drops without having to turn off the system (the only current way to "reset" fan behaviour).

Fix the fan controller software so it is more leninent and doesn't go to "turbine" mode if the machine is just sitting in the XMB (perhaps temperature settings are too conservative?). It is definitely a far cry from what we were promised - my PS3 is most of the time just as loud as original PS2 and just a bit quieter than Xbox360 in dashboard.

-Whenever i insert a BD in to the ps3 while it is in standbye it boots up and goes to a grey screen and never starts the movie. My ps3 is then hard froze. I can only insert a BD while the XMB is loaded.

...and...

Whenever I insert a Blu Ray disc or DVD when the PS3 is in standby it boots up and plays it.

Actually this happened to me as well last night. I paused my PS3 during BluRay playback and pressed a new activity on my Harmony to go to PC mode. I have a PS2 IR receiver via USB to PS2 converter cable so I can use Harmony to control PS3. Anyhow, I noticed the PS3 went into "are you sure you want to turn off the system?" screen before TV switched input, as the remote sent probably the power off command or something. I got up later and manually, blindly turned it off by "holding" the power "key" down. Some time later I also blindly turned it on to estimate the noise as I was replying to someone on this forum. I switched TV input later and noticed that PS3 was on a gray screen, seemingly frozen. It DID react to PS button on the controller and offered only two options, to turn off system or controller. No other key presses were detected and you couldn't quit to XMB or resume movie. So this looks like a bug - if you turn off your PS3 manually while it's on the "are you sure you want to turn off the system?" then it will effectively freeze once turned on again - or, return to the "previous state" if you will, but only allowing you to turn it off.

Fan speed does drop without having to reset the system it slows down when the system reaches a preset level, no idea what temp it is though. I've noticed it can take a good bit of time, but it will go down to near silent. The only time I've noticed the fan on high while in the XMB is if I was just playing a game or watching a BD movie and exited out to the XMB.

Would you rather the thing burn itself out?

Would you rather the thing burn itself out?

No, but I also don't want to be a victim of Sony's knee-jerk reaction to widespread reports of PS3's overheating, mostly demo units in stores. I don't need a unit that will survive a small enclosed space. And also, being silent is one of the big selling points. With it gone, there's really nothing left about PS3 that I feel good about right now.

I'll do the test to see if fan ever slows down to the medium setting. I do know that it never goes back to near-silent state, after 20 minutes have passed, because I left it on for hours for the exact purpose of ascertaining that.

Odd that yours doesn't

I just donwloaded and played GT HD demo v1.1. During download temperature was 52C and fan was spinning with medium speed. During the game it must have gone to 56+ since the fan was at full speed when I quit the game and went back to XMB. Then I watched some stuff on my TV. Half an hour later, PS3 is still in full blow loud mode despite sitting in the dashboard for that long. Temperature has also dropped to 46. Yet the fan does not slow down. This is what I'd like to get fixed in the coming firmware releases.

Oh, one more thing - not sure if it's on the list already. Ability to resume playback of BD if you eject/turn off the disk. I have a habit of watching them only partially then resuming the next day (don't ask). At the very least, it should remember where I left off for the disk that's still in, if not for the last few disks (certainly no lack of hdd space to store that info). These kind of features separate real disk players from temporary stopgap players.

Been playing with the browser and here's some changes it really needs: (some I think are on the list already but I'll add them anyway)

Increase Font Size -- The list states that this was fixed in 1.3. Well it needs more. +2 is not enough. We should be able to make the text the size of fists if we wanted to like any other browser out there. But at least give us a few more size increases because right now it is almost useless for most sites.

Zoom -- On the list. Inconjunction with the larger font, being able to zoom in and around on a page would be great.

Close Window Button -- Right now you have to hit triangle, go to tools (I think), scroll all the way to the bottom to select close window. It should either be assignable to a button the controller, or one of the first options on the first screen when you hit the triangle button.

Enable larger cache/memory error -- If I go to a site with flash, even modest flash I usually get an 'out of memory' error and the page loads up blank.

Video Plugins -- It would be great to be able to play embedded quicktime or windows media files right on the webpage.

"Right Click" -- Allow the ability to 'right-click' and save items such as pictures off of a webpage. Assignable on the controller, or enable the right mouse button if people are using a mouse to browse.

Minimize Browser -- Allow browser to be 'minimized' if you need to go back to the XMB, instead of having to close it completely. I believe you can have it recall all the last windows that were open, but it would be nice to not have to wait for it to load up each time you jump back to the XMB and back to browser.

Speed -- The browser renders the screen like an old Pentium II right now. Most apparent on flash files (if you can get them to load without a memory error). A flash .mov that normally runs at 30fps runs at 1-2fps on the PS3. It needs to be optimised for the cell processor.

The browser needs a lot of work and I hope Sony continues to update and improve it. I don't want it to just be a gimmick feature as I can find it extremely useful. Why run to my computer to check my email, when I can flip on the browser and kinda/sorta (see fix #1) read it on my tv? Also great for websites that play episodes of past tv shows you might have missed. Allow the PS3 to play that, and zoom in on the video. Or work with the networks to make a PS3centric version and allow them to be downloaded to your videos to watch. Lots of possibilities and potential.

Even though i do have a 768P TV (Sony Grand Wega) I dont really feel it would be nesisary because it overscans reguardless of the resolution. Also its that easy for the PS3 to do because games that typically render in 720P max would run slower in 768P when compared to 720P and this could be a problem for the game devs which they probably wont ever touch. 360 gets around all of this by having a hardware scaler (kinda cheating really..)

Well, I just got my PS3 from CC. Did the initial setup n' all with my 60" SXRD running through HDMI. I haven't played any games b/c I'm waiting for my boy at EA to send me Madden, Fight Night, NFS: Carbon. I did download Motorstorm demo b/c I'm so anxious to play that game ... those previews leave me blown away. However, when I played it I was not really impressed. Maybe its b/c it was playing at 720 on my TV .. .I don't know but I guess I'll just wait for the EA games to arrive and also for the upcoming games to drop (b/c I did buy this with the intention and acceptance that we won't be seeing real usage of Blu-Ray's capacity on games for some time depending on developers). The only negative so far is the Browser ... I was trying to check my yahoo mail and the page took too long to load so I just exited the browser (doesn't really bother me anyway b/c I didn't even know I'd be able to surf the net on the PS3).
I haven't tried the sixaxis feature yet but the controller itself is just ok. I think the R2 and L2 buttons were changed to what they are to be similar but different to the 360 triggers. They seem so similar but they kept it looking the way they looked on the PS2 controller.
I'm a big PlayStation fan and I know they got some work to do to solve some issues and also to just make the system even better. The PS3 right now doesn't seem like anything to do backflips over and definitely not worth the overnight waits at storefronts like many morons did on launchday, but I do have a blu-ray player now and I'm all set for upcoming games that will be coming out for the PS3 ... I'll just keep enjoying some Rainbow Six and GoW on my 360 'til then.

Sony, make us proud! ::raises a glass of chocolate milk::

I would love the same thing. However, I'm not sure but I think it would require a Digital to Analog conversion for analog outs... which would be a hardware thing. Since they aren't selling any multi-channel cabling, I doubt it could be added. :(

If anyone knows anything concrete, please post!

Sony should make the PSP function as a remote control for the PS3 so we can change media tracks without having to turn on the TV. This would be a great remote play function.

I can't believe the list in the first post does not include upscaling of 720p games to 1080i!
This is suppossed to be a high def gaming system and 720p games are getting downconverted to 480p on TV's that only do 1080i - that ain't high def!!!

Wow! Did I really miss that yesterday or did you add it after my post? ;)

Anyway, sorry about that and thanks for not blasting my obviously poor eyesight!

I sure as heck hope this is fixed in the big March release - if not MUCH sooner! I would love to see what COD3 and R:FOM look like in high def. I would also consider buying Madden '07 if it could be upconverted from 720p to 1080i for my 1080i TV.

Yes, it is. What radckh was referring to is his HDTV doesn't support 720p input... so on his set many games are down-rezed to 480p. That's why he can't play them in hi-def.

People can argue the point all they want, but simple logic dictates that the Playstation 3 should have been designed to output next gen games at 720p or 1080i. If that involves a scaling chip in hardware or whatever, it's a gross oversight for the many people with HDTVs that don't support 720p inputs. Most HD output devices can scale to 1080i... in fact, can anyone name an HD device other than the PS3 that doesn't scale to 1080i? (For the record, I don't have this problem... my TV accepts 720p input, but I can certainly understand the frustration for those it affects.)

More firends list functionality. I would like to see where my friends are playing not just what game and I want the option to jump into their game room if I have the game or send out an invite to come join mine....I mean really in-game is where we met many of our online friends so of course we'll have the same games.

Stat recording of all my games in 1 location under my username.

SIXAXIS Persistaint key mapping. We should be able to set the function of each button for both the games and XMB.

I own a Denon 3806 and can not get 7.1 output from it through hdmi...There was others having this problem and one person who talked to Denon said that Denon told him that it was the PS3's problem...not Denon's...they told him it was a compatibility issue and that he should go to the PS3 forum and try to make a big stink about it to convince Sony to do a firmware update. I don't know if Denon is right  but if so that would be a BIG TIME firmware upgrade for me and anyone else with Denon 3806 or 4306 and maybe even the 4806 and up...All I am sure about is the 3806 and 4306... So... if there is any other people with these receivers that care about getting 7.1 PCM DISCRETE channels...6.1 too for that matter... through their HDMI connection, maybe you should all post something on the PS3 forums also...and even contact Denon and see what the truth is if you can talk to someone who knows what they are talking about...The one customer service rep from Denon I talked too told me "for PCM signals to get 7.1 you have to push the 7ch stereo button" . Now... I know that ain't right.

Take care,

Let me start this by venting a bit. I am really p*&#ed off at Sony for rushing this thing out the door and marketing it as a multi-media machine without really thinking about what this term really means and the capabilities that can be accomplished with such a powerful motherboard. There is so much missing hence the list that Daver put together.

Just to think of the 360 being an inferior hardware yet packing so much in terms of muti-media capabilities is reason enough to abandon the PS3 altogether and get assimilated by the Borg.

But not me. I am a PS fan, and I believe in the versatility, upgradilbility and longevity of the system. This is why I purchased the PS3. However, market forces showed us that ingenuity and performance do not always win. I can only hope that Sony learned from its Betamax mistakes.

Enough with the venting. Back to the initial purpose of this thread. I would like to add to the list, which is quite comprehensive (thanks to Daver) , more music visualization capabilities (the more psychedelic the better), and a Random mode to play them all in no particular order (a la MS-WMP). They have done it with the latest PSP firmware and I believe once the pressure of the PS3 release is done we will be surprised by how much goodies we will get in this system.

The list is fine and dandy, but is there anyone on this forum that has connections to get it to Sony (as if they don't know already) and maybe get their feedback and a roadmap for these features? I believe as a community we are entitled to as much.

I guess I am the eternal optimist. In the meantime I am loving my BD movies, GTHD, and Resistance on my 50" NEC in 1080i, and I cannot wait for VF5.
