View Full Version : PS3, HDMI, Westinghouse ...
Can PS3 owners with a Westinghouse LCD comment on HDMI use and what Westy set you have... thanks
Reported maybe working here, but no update on 5 sec fix??

one43637 11-19-06, 10:53 PM i'm interested in it as well. i saw the favorable reviews that the Westinghouse 1080p sets were getting, but when i saw it next to a Samsung, i wasn't too impressed by the picture.
firefighter81 11-19-06, 10:57 PM 37" W1 here.
I don't have another 1080p set to compare it to. It looks great to me.
I go HDMI-DVI into DVI-1, and I have the sync issue sometimes, I have to get up and unplug the DVI cable from the TV and then plug it back in, it's an annoyance, but a minor one that I can deal with until a PS3 firmware fix is released.
IF thats the only issue, its not deal breaker thanks, easy to replug it back in.
Now to find a ps3 for a fair price...
Does turning the Westy on off help, I have to do that when I boot my PC sometimes ?
firefighter81 11-19-06, 11:43 PM I've tried turning it off and on several times in a row, even with delays in between, and it hasn't worked. Although, I think I read somewhere that it did work for one person?
It's easier for me to walk the 12ft to the TV and slightly unplug the cable (enough to interrupt signal) and put it back in. I just leave the little screw tight things loose now.
I'm confident that it will be fixed soon enough. Even if not, I'm happy enough with the TV's price vs performance to where it won't bother me much.
One last question , what about this holding the PS3 power button for 5 secs to sync displays?
Not sure on the process think its in the PS3 manual, did you try that?
WYSEGUY 11-20-06, 12:47 AM i have the 37" westinghouse, mine flickers when going from menu to game, or game back to menu, i just turn it off and then turn it back on and it stops, could this problem ever be fixed? or is it just something thats going to happen from now on? would a firmware update fix it? or what...
The only issues I've had so far with my PS3 are locking up after playing downloaded game demos, and that only seems to happen if I have Talladega Nights in the drive at the time.
My PS3 is hooked up to a Westinghouse 42w2 with a HDMI-DVI adapter for 1080p video output, and Optical to my receiver for audio, which has not failed me once. I think my Westy firmware is 1.11, I know it's not 1.16 and apparently I can't get anyone out here to update it for me :( I think my firmware is what's holding my HDMI port back. It handles 1080i just fine, but it sparkles with 1080p input. Port DVI-1 does a great job with the 1080p signal.
Finally got my hands on a PS3 hooked in to my Westy 47"...
Trying to load Blast Factor demo the screen just turns black, not sure if its a lockup or something else?
vincentnyc 11-23-06, 09:03 PM i have a ps3 with a westy 37" w3 model. i dont have a hdmi cable yet..gonna get it next week. so far no problem with rca connection. but when i plug it to the hdmi next week, what kinda problem will i expect? im still on what kinda problem have? what is exactly the problem? explain. thx.

Hey have you tried to just switch inputs, it should work instead of having to unplug the DVI cable?
I have a Westy 42" 1.16 firmware, and I'm running my PS3 with an HDMI to DVI monster cable, into the DVI1 at 1080p. I have some handshake synch issues here and there, maybe about 2-3 so far, no biggie. All I do is cycle through another input real quick and when I come back to DVI1 it's fine. I have been using it for a few hours today, playing Resistance and watching Bluray and I haven't had a synch issue yet, either way it looks great and I'm very happy with my system and Westy!
Hopefully they'll come up with a fix for the small synch issues one day.

vincentnyc 11-23-06, 09:13 PM can someone answer my last post plz? i dont understand what kinda problem u guys are having and will i have it too when i get my hdmi cable? explain plz. thx.
mmafightetnow 11-23-06, 09:52 PM If you hook up with component 1080i vs 1080 p hdmi do you guys see a difference in BD movies or game pq?
vincentnyc 11-23-06, 10:55 PM Any1 plz?
fjtorres 11-23-06, 11:45 PM Any1 plz?
HDMI ports come with a copy-protection authentication protocol call HDCP that requires the monitor to validate itself to the content source (in this case PS3). When switching content sources--BD to game, game to crossbar menu, etc--some folks experience blackouts because the PS3 demands an authentication handshake and times out before the set can finish the song and dance. It happens with many brands and models but since Westies are popular with gamers...
Folks are looking for ways to make do until Sony fixes their finicky handshake routines.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled discussion...
Good luck!
vincentnyc 11-24-06, 12:31 AM Fjtorres: thank u.
So I definetly will experience this problem when I get my hdmi cable and connect ps3 to my tv thru hdmi? If so, this will totally sux! How do I resolve this problem?
firefighter81 11-24-06, 12:46 AM You don't resolve the problem, Sony will (hopefully)
vincentnyc 11-24-06, 01:13 AM So what r the temporary solution then?
NewOrlnsDukie 11-24-06, 02:55 AM I've had no issues whatsoever w/ my Westy 42" (firmware 1.00) using a 35' HDMI-DVI cable. Getting a great 1080p signal w/ no sparklies at all.
firefighter81 11-24-06, 03:03 AM Wow, why such a long cable? Just wondering.
NewOrlnsDukie 11-24-06, 03:07 AM I have the ps3 on my desktop, which is pretty darn far from the entertainment center in my home office.
I decided to keep the ps3 on my desktop instead of in my ent ctr b/c I knew I'd end up using a bunch of external usb drives and other peripherals, and figured the entertainment ctr would look cluttered if I kept it there.
fjtorres 11-24-06, 04:36 AM Fjtorres: thank u.
So I definetly will experience this problem when I get my hdmi cable and connect ps3 to my tv thru hdmi? If so, this will totally sux! How do I resolve this problem?
Use component connection.
It limits you to 1080i but it has no copy protection and if it doesn't authenticate...
vincentnyc 11-24-06, 10:09 AM dammit i should have bought a hdmi-dvi cable instead of a hdmi-hdmi cable!!!!!
vincentnyc 11-24-06, 10:15 AM hdmi-dvi cable will transfer both video and audio just like the hdmi-hdmi, correct? meaning i dont need another white and yellow cable right?
vincentnyc 11-24-06, 10:17 AM update, i saw a dvi in the back of the tv with white and red. so my question is how do i plug in everything from ps3 to my tv? in the back of ps3, it only has hdmi and composite. so i have to plug in the hdmi(ps3)-dvi(tv), and the composite (red and white ps3) - tv(red and white)? is that correct?
vincentnyc 11-24-06, 10:19 AM ok my question is should i return my hdmi-hdmi and get the hdmi-dvi cable from monoprice? or i should just get the hdmi-dvi cable and keep the hdmi-hdmi for future use? if so what kinda future use i can use for?
fjtorres 11-24-06, 10:20 AM DVI is video only. No audio. You would need separate optical or stereo audio.
And it *does* authenticate with HDCP.
The PS3 has an analog connector port for PS2 cables. That's how you get component out.
vincentnyc 11-24-06, 10:21 AM btw..both cable would cost me around $9, shipping and handling included. what should i do?
mmafightetnow 11-24-06, 04:21 PM update, i saw a dvi in the back of the tv with white and red. so my question is how do i plug in everything from ps3 to my tv? in the back of ps3, it only has hdmi and composite. so i have to plug in the hdmi(ps3)-dvi(tv), and the composite (red and white ps3) - tv(red and white)? is that correct?
yes, you got it.
i confirmed this with another poster who connect just like that and works
vincentnyc 11-24-06, 04:44 PM but should i keep the hdmi-hdmi cable or return it and get the hdmi-dvi cable?
but should i keep the hdmi-hdmi cable or return it and get the hdmi-dvi cable?
You could just get a HDMI to DVI adaptor and use the HDMI cable. Then you have both options for input.
vincentnyc 11-24-06, 07:40 PM how much is the adaptor? and where can i get it?
vincentnyc 11-24-06, 07:41 PM and is there any pro and cons with hdmi-hdmi vs hdmi-dvi cables? or it doesn't matter..both are the same?
I exchanged a defective PS3 today for a new one that came preloaded with 1.10 software. I have not had any flickering issues using a dual link HDMI to DVI cable. Did notice some green lines/dots on NBA but they cleared up.
I tried both bluray movies, 1080p and 720p games and they switched without issue on a Westy 47" set.
and is there any pro and cons with hdmi-hdmi vs hdmi-dvi cables? or it doesn't matter..both are the same?
What I found was most important is to get a DUAL LINK cable. HDMI to HDMI or HDMI to DVI. Best in theory is a direct connection. The DVI input handles slightly green better than HDMI.
So try a Dual Link HDMI to DVI cable.
If you see sparkles in the image you need a better quality cable, at least that helped me.
If you have a decent cable an adaptor should not make a difference.
Check monoprice for cables and adaptors if you cant find locally.

so let me get this straight...so u saying the best will be a hdmi-hdmi or a hdmi-dvi cable, correct? then y did u even tell me to get a hdmi-dvi adaptor in the first place!!!!
FiveMillionWays 11-25-06, 04:45 AM Mine seems to self fix itself. Perhaps I have new firmware. How do you check to see what version it is running?
vincentnyc 11-25-06, 12:58 PM can any1 answer my last question? y is that dude telling me to get a hdm-dvi adaptor and then in his 2nd post he said it is no good, that i need a hdmi-hdmi or a hdmi-dvi cable? this dude is contradicting himself.
vincentnyc 11-25-06, 04:23 PM any1????
vincentnyc 11-30-06, 03:39 PM im bumping this thread cuz it is misleading...
one person, ftorres (may spell his name wrong), in this thread even if we get a hdmi-dvi cable, it wouldn't resolve the "flickering" (handshake) cuz it carries hdcp? and another person JackLT said he hasn't had any flickering since he use a dual hdmi-dvi cable.
so my question is how is lying to who?
here is a link to my other related thread:

vincentnyc 11-30-06, 03:40 PM so my final question is will i still experience "flickering" if i get a hdmi-dvi cable? currently i'm experiencing "flicker" on my tv using a hdmi-hdmi cable.

Just go to a store with good return policy and try it for yourself. You can only get so much info from the board. I don't know if there are FRY in NYC.
silverserver 12-01-06, 03:15 PM So far, from my experiences with PS3 and Westy 47 is thus:
I use a Dual Link DVI-HDMI cable to connect my PS3 to the Westy on DVI1.
The only problem I have experienced is synch loss when going from a 720p game (Resistance or COD3) back to the XMB, which I have set to 1080p. A quick cycle of the DVI input on the Westy remote quickly resolves this. When the Westy comes back around to DVI1 all is well. Now I just need to program my Logitech universal remote for the DVI source button from the Westy remote. This is an adequate solution until Sony hopefully fixes this issue with a firmware upgrade.

Hey Silver,
I have the same set and was (probably) having the same problems as you -- my Westy would start turning on and off every 3 seconds or so, making a Tick noise every time. Sometimes I'd get a picture (no ticking / flashing) but it would be made of jumbled pixels (as if each line on the picture was offset horizontally by a random amount).
Here are my findings:
- PS3 to Westy on HDMI port using HDMI cable: Sync issues (above problems).
- PS3 to Westy on DVI-1 port using HDMI-to-DVI cable: Sync issues (above problems).
- PS3 to Westy on DVI-2 port using HDMI-to-DVI cable: NO ISSUES.
Try it. I know it sounds silly, but (at least on my set) DVI-2 seems to be more tolerant than DVI-1. I haven't had any problems with my PS3 since I switched to DVI-2.
I still hope this is something Sony can fix with an update, cause I know I can't get my Westy to be firmware-updated (I live in Canada).
Let me know if it worked :)
vincentnyc 12-05-06, 03:00 PM cuz dvi2 doesn't have hdcp
ssues (above problems).

Exactly what I've been telling people as well, also use a Dual Link cable for best signal. Works perfect. DVI2 has HDCP, BR and NBA both display at 1080p.
The PS3 on DVI2 looks so much better than the 360 too on VGA at 1080p.
I have a 42" Westy firmware 1.16. I'm using a monster 400 HDMI-to-DVI cable with my PS3. I was initially using the DVI1 input because I was having "sparkles" on HDMI and I had read that DVI2 would also have sparkles with my firnware. I had a ton of synch issues with DVI1 but other than that it was working nicely.
Well, last night I tried my DVI2 to find that it worked perfectly without any synch issues what-so-ever. The ONLY problem I have with it is that when anything that is native 720p resolution (anything that can only be displayed in 720p), like Resistance is played, I have a white line running vertically down the left side of the screen. It's like a "sparkley" line of interference.
Anyone else have this problem, know of any way to fix it. I know that if Resistance was 1080i/1080p enabled, I wouldn't have this issue. I think it's only on the 720p setting. Will there be a patch to enable 1080i/1080p res for Resistance?
Thanks for any input,
Joe
WYSEGUY 12-05-06, 06:58 PM so if i order one of these...

and run it into dvi2 then i will have NO sync issues meaning no blinking problems? and i will still have the full quality of a regular hdmi cable?
Try to find a Dual Link HDMI to DVI cable, thats what Im using with success, I had some issues with a cheaper non dual link cable. On DVI2, its perfect 99% of the time, once in a while I see a green line of pixels that has always cleared up.
If you buy one locally that you can return all the better if its not right.

I have cable run in the wall so I am not too keen on running another cable.
I am having issues with hdmi/hdcp and was thinking about trying a hdmi-dvi adapter (probably this one --> http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10419&cs_id=1041902&p_id=2081&seq=1&format=2&style= )

does the switch help with the handshake issue at all?
I have not yet gotten the 1.3 update (will try when I get home) I am hoping that that will help some.

could you point a good one out to me? off of newegg or monoprice?
i cant seem to find one, the only ones that are dual link are dvi to dvi, none of the dvi to hdmi are dual link...
Parafly9 12-07-06, 11:41 AM Bumpint this thread... so does the HDMI to DVI cable on DVi-2 solve the problem, or what? I am having wicked bad flickering, every time I go from XMB to game or back I need to recycle inputs and power on / off. Annoying as hell.
I have mine connected to a Sony Bravia 46XBR2 via HDMI. I'm not getting any of these HDMI flicker issues. Maybe the problem is the Westinghouse, and not the PS3.

The one I'm using isn't dual-link (I had no idea what that was until I read this thread -- had to look it up). Mine's just a plain old non-monster cable that I bought at a computer store. Works great.
If there are stores in your area that have a 30-day no-questions return policy (Best Buy, Future Shop, etc) you can always pick up the cheapest HDMI-to-DVI cable you can find, and try your PS3 on your Westy's DVI-2. Worked for me!
(now I just hope that I won't start seeing problems with my 8300HD cable box, now that it's using an HDMI-HDMI cable...)

and whats 'AWG' mean? is higher or lower better?
FiveMillionWays 12-07-06, 09:14 PM I was having problems with my hdmi to ps3 to my westy but for some reason or another everything worked fine when I turned it on last night. I wonder if that power outage had something to do with it.
I've been fiddling with my PS3 and Westy 1.16, and been trying the numerous inputs and resolutions. I have finally decided to leave it on my DVI1 port and keep the PS3's resolution on 1080i. I find that my Westy's 1080p setting, either through PS3 or 360, is a lot softer than my 1080i setting. I have also noticed that when 1080p is enabled, it disables my "sharpness" setting. I have my sharpness at about 7 on the 1080i res and it looks fabulous. Also I have no synch problems or sparkles what-so-ever with the 1080i setting, another plus.
Now I know sharpness just introduces noise to make the picture appear sharper, but IMO I find that on 1080i with a 7-8 sharpness level, my BD discs have a much nicer HD pop to them.
Anyone else notice that 1080p on earlier firmware Westy's disables the "sharpness" and makes the picture softer than 1080i? It may seem that the sharpness control is there on the 1080p setting, but if you actively go from 1-14 while watching/playing anything, you'll realize it is disabled.
Test it out for yourself and let me know what you think.
Joe
alexcote 12-08-06, 08:39 AM Test it out for yourself and let me know what you think.
I'll give it a try.
Now I'm in no way an expert on TV signals and HD stuff and whatnot, but as far as 1080p sets such as our Westy's are concerned, isn't 1080i basically 1080P@30? I thought all the set did was accumulate two frames and combine them?
When you play a 1080 game on the PS3 and it's set to output at 1080i, is every frame (every odd or every even) the same rendering, just different lines, or is it actually different renderings?
Jiffylush 12-08-06, 09:45 AM and whats 'AWG' mean? is higher or lower better?
Lower number is thicker, implies more shielding, I went with the 22 but mine is run in the wall.
As far as the HDMI/HDCP problem goes, I use it just fine with my TiVo S3, so the problem is related to the PS3. Just because Sony's implementation works fine with Sony's TVs doesn't mean it is truely HDCP compliant.
I am buying this (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10419&cs_id=1041902&p_id=2081&seq=1&format=2&style=) adapter. Will post my results later.
Yes, I noticed that on 1080p sharpness does not work, but does on other settings.
When I use the browser I set the PS3 to 720p and sharpness to 2-3, looks great, and text is bigger so I can read it.
I noticed to the 1080p jitters with some test patterns but 1080i looks smooth.
Not saying 1080i or 720p is always better but in some cases worth trying.
I'll give it a try.

Yes, I have heard that the Westy will just upscale the res up to 1080p if it gets a lower signal like 1080i. I'm no expert either, what I'm realizing/thinking is that if I had my sharpness set to 0 on a 1080i signal it seems to look exactly the same as 1080p. The introduction of the sharpness just seems to give the 1080i an edge because I'm so used to sharpness being set higher. Does that make any sense?
Either way I love the set, great bang for the buck and it's all about whatever's good for each person. But I can't help but be obsessive about wanting and knowing I'm getting the most out of it.
Joe
Thanks for the info, using hdmi I was in "click/blanking" nightmare every few seconds, but using dvi adapter and dvi2 input is flawless... nevertheless it would be good to see hdmi works properly... do you think either the ps3 or the westinghouse 47" will get a patch to make both work well together?

I'm hoping Sony will, not Westy... I live in Canada and if I want a firmware upgrade I need to ship my TV to the states and back. Sounds like a huge hassle and a month and a half without a TV to me. :P
Unless there's a way to perform a firmware upgrade by hand. But last time I asked them they said nopers.
I also recall having that same problem (the clicking / blinking) a handful of times from my cable box, a SA 8300HD. I'd get that when switching resolution. That was back when I used to be connected with HDMI-to-DVI-1. Haven't got that problem ever since my cable box got switched to HDMI-HDMI... *crosses fingers*

so lets clear this UP ONCE AND FOR ALL, can somone PLEASE confirm if you use a hdmi-dvi cable and connect it to dvi2 port on my westy 37" tv, the flickering problem will be gone.
if yes, i will return my hdmi-hdmi cable and get a hdmi-dvi cable.

is ur westy 37" or 42"?
silverserver 12-11-06, 12:45 PM Vincent, to clear up your question quickly - yes, buy a DUAL LINK DVI to HDMI cable and return the HDMI to HDMI one. Westinghouse monitors are notorious for having issues with 1080p on the HDMI port. Not sure about your Westy 37, but on the Westy 47, I use a DUAL LINK HDMI to DVI cable I bought from Monoprice. I have never had the sparklies or flickering that some other folks have experienced.
I am still connecting to my PS3 to DVI1, but may try DVI2 this evening when I get home from work. The reason I want to try DVI2 is to alleviate SYNCH issues that others such as JackLT have gotten rid of by using DVI2. The synch issue I speak of (from my experience, anyway) seems to be caused by my XMB (cross media bar on PS3) being set to 1080p, which looks great. However, when I fire up a 720p game such as Resistence and quit the game and come back to the XMB, the display on the Westy is all garbled. Quickly changing the input on the Westy remote by pressing the DVI button 3 times to cycle through the available digital connections - DVI1, DVI2, HDMI - fixes this for me - takes about three seconds, but is annoying.
Jack and Alex - thanks for the DVI2 tip. I was under the the impression from reading the rather lengthy Westy 42" and 47" threads that DVI2 was incabable of 1080p or at least had issues with it. I'll give it a try and see what I can find.
vincentnyc 12-11-06, 12:52 PM ... I use a DUAL LINK HDMI to DVI cable I bought from Monoprice. I have never had the sparklies or flickering that some other folks have experienced....

what is a DUAL hmdi-dvi cable? i was looking at this at monoprice:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10231&cs_id=1023104&p_id=1916&style=&seq=1&format=1#largeimage
is that a DUAL?
then u said ur screen is "garbled" when u play a 720p game and return to XMB. u have to press DVI button 3 times on the remote.
if that is the case...y would i consider getting a hdmi-dvi cable then? my current problem is "flickering" when going between games and XMB. and it is resolved by turning the tv on and off on the remote. if i go ur route and have to press DVI button 3 times on the remote to fix it...what is the point of getting a hdmi-dvi cable? please answer that.
GW-SMOkeY 12-11-06, 01:24 PM Ok everyone its my time to post now. I have a PS3 60GB Model that is currently connected to a 37" 37w3 Westy, and a Z5500 5.1 Surround Sound System.
The 5.1 Surround system is fully THX certified, and works without any issues. ( Very pleased ) The Westy on the other hand is one heck of a display for its price, but kind of leaves me with this question? The HDMI issue ( which btw I am also experiencing ) is kind of anoying. Which leaves me to belive that the Westy is at fault here. What I also noticed is when I slightly touch the cable in the back of the PS3 I loose the HDMI authentication, and I get a blinking black screen.
Another thing I relaized is that when jumping from 1080p XMB and then to a 1080p source like a game or BD, it works fine. When I launch Resistance, or Motorstorm demo, I get an authentication issue. Sometimes I don't have this issue. Strange right?
The Westy is v1.5, PS3 has v 1.30 installed ( which I hoped that would fix this issue ), and the receiver is capable of COAXIAL and OPTICAL.
As I am typing this from the PS3, I want to mention that I belive this issue has to do with the software vs. hardware.
I am using the cheapest 28awg Cable from Monoprice. I wonder if the 24awg HDMI cable w/ Netjacket is better?
What I do know is that this issues is non existant when connected via component cables. Which leaves me to belive it is either the cable, or a possible software fix?
My simplest solution for this issue curently is; jumping inputs ( ie: from HDMI to Any other Input, then back to HDMI - works! ) or turning the monitor on and off.
This leaves two questions, and they are:
1. Have you tried touching the cable on the back of the PS3, and do you loose your HDCP authentication?
2. 37w3 Owners with v1.6 do you experience this issue?
vincentnyc 12-11-06, 02:00 PM ..My simplest solution for this issue curently is; jumping inputs ( ie: from HDMI to Any other Input, then back to HDMI - works! ) or turning the monitor on and off...
the switching inputs would work for me too i think instead of turning tv on and off.
but everyone in this thread said dvi-hdmi cable would fix this "flickering" problem...but then the last user said he experience "garbled" pix and have to press dvi button 3 times. so my question is why get a hmi-dvi cable then? please englighten me.
Parafly9 12-11-06, 02:57 PM I would also like to know.I am having the same issues with HDMI -- HDMI cable. About to go pick up the DVI cable but I have heard from other threads this doesn't actualy solve it, so I would like to hear froma few people that it will in fact solve the issues.

DLove23 12-12-06, 02:05 AM Ok, this thread is confusing me.
I have a PS3 hooked up to the Westy 42 1080p. I had it hooked up via HDMI but had sparklies and delays going from source to source (authentication?).
I finally hooked it up via components and it says it is outsourcing at 1080p. Am I getting 1080p? The curious thing is that when I had it hooked to HDMI during setup the system automatically set the highest available resolution at 720p. I had to manually go in and change it to 1080p. Now, with the components when I ran the same automatic settings it recognized 1080p right off the bat. The manual FWIW says that 1080p output is available over component and I the Westy 42 inch 1080p will accept a 1080p signal via that connection. Am I right here? Am I getting the 1080p signal over component?
I've had a few suggestions. One of them was the 5 second hold the power button thing. That sounds awful gimmicky but I guess no harm in trying....please tell me the exact procedure there and I'll give it a try.
The other things I'm looking at are cables going HDMI to DVI, HDMI into a DVI adaptor. Which one works? Both? Argh!!! DVI1 works but DVI2 doesn't? Is that real. I'm looking to have a firmware upgrade for the Westy soon - a service call has been made. But...
Please...
For the love of God...
Someone definitively tell me what the best thing to do is and whether or not I'm getting a 1080p signal RIGHT NOW out of my component hookup. The picture looks good, but is it the best it can be?
Thanks in advance for any help I may get here! :)

listen man, im not gonna try to fix this "flickering" problem and then get another problem.

I believe that was only a problem on the 37" or 42" and not on the 47".

Ok, quoting my own post here. :p Does anyone have any definitive answers to the above?
HorrorScope 12-14-06, 10:49 AM I am using the cheapest 28awg Cable from Monoprice. I wonder if the 24awg HDMI cable w/ Netjacket is better?
Yes it's better and from what I've been gathering with HDMI you want that netjacket as that will help with the issue you mentioned when you touched the cable behind the PS3 and you lost connection. That is what netjacket is for and HDMI seems to be very intricate and perhaps even a bad design for how many pins it has within itself.
24 AWG rated cables meet HDMI 1.3 specs. While 28 AWG might work, they do not meet specifications as laid down by the HDMI spec group.
silverserver 12-15-06, 11:04 AM OK folks, I am going to try to write this as plainly as possible to try to clear up some confusion. Many Westy 42s and 47s seem to have problems with "sparklies" or "flickering" - call it what you will - when sending 1080p from an HDMI source - i.e. PS3 to the HDMI input on the Westy. The solution that I have found that works for ME is to use a dual link HDMI to DVI cable - don't know why it needs to be dual link - but it works, so whatever. I do not have spaklies or flickering on my display now. I can watch Blu-ray movies at 1080p and play 1080p games with no issue. Yay.
I don't know if it is an issue with the PS3 or with the Westy, but from MY experience, when switching from a 720p game and quitting out of it and going back to XMB, there is a display synch problem where my XMB - set to 1080p - is garbled some of the time - not always. It's looks like if you try to run a progressive scan DVD player on a TV that does not support progressive scan. Switching inputs quickly using the remote - cycling through the available digital inputs - fixes my problem. Certainly not a big deal, it's just annoying.
As far as getting 1080p on component: I have not tried it. I will not be convinced it actually works until I see it myself.
If what I am saying is confusing or misleading to you - sorry, but I am just trying to help. I have done volumes of research on the various Westinghouse models and do what works for me.
I just got a 37" 1080p Westy LCD in the mail. Put the PS3 on it tonight for some quick tests. Seems to be displaying the same issues other folks are having. I have to cycle through 2 or 3 inputs to solve the flickering screen. I've seen some of the sparklies as well, although that doesn't bother me as much. If I'm not staring at the screen looking for problems, I don't really see them myself.
If a dual link cable solves this problem, fine with me. I haven't read this entire thread, but it appears to be a sync issue of some sort? If true, seems like something that could be altered with an update. Flipping inputs isn't that big of a deal, but it's slightly annoying (Harmony would solve this with one press).
The person getting this set wont have a PS3 for another 6/12 months. Perhaps this annoying little problem will be solved. If not, oh well. Still a pretty darn solid TV from what I've seen the last couple of days.
37" W1 here.
I have the exact same configuration - DVI-HDMI cable from monoprice. I also have to remove the cable and re-insert when I get 1080p sync issues. I also think this is a PS3 issue since the Westinghouse knows exactly what its supposed to be receiving when I get the sync issues (according to the system info menu).

Nah, it's a Westinghouse issue. I have my PS3 hooked up to my Bravia 46XBR2 using a Monoprice 24AWG HDMI cable. It's running at 1080p with no flicker issues whatsoever

what...u using a hdmi-dvi cable and u still having a PROBLEM? so getting a dvi-hdmi wont resolve the flickering problem like others have said in this thread.
btw which westinghouse u got? 37", 42" or what? what what model..like w1, w2, or w3?
DLove23 12-16-06, 03:28 PM I called Westinghouse about the lockout problem my Westy had and they initially were going to have someone come out and install an updated firmware. I then told them about my HDMI problem with my PS3 and 1080p and they are now having me send back the TV and sending out a new one. They said the newer model would solve both problems, I hope they're right.
In a somewhat unrelated issue - do any of you use FILL instead of STANDARD when viewing BD/playing games? I play around with it but wonder if I lose any detail when I choose FILL mode because of upscaling.
So, you're suggesting call Westinghouse and they'll swap sets with you? I'll try today, but I would imagine it might be Monday before I get anyone.
Fountainhead 12-16-06, 04:20 PM So what is the verdict from those who own the Westy 37"? Worth buying for the PS3? Im seriously considering buying it...

You can try, not sure if they'll do the same thing to you as they did to me but it never hurts to try. I didn't ask to swap out the sets, they suggested it themselves. We'll see what happens.
LVM-42w2 v1.0 got it in Aug 06
- Initial flickering every 2/3 seconds. Would go away after powering on and of the westy and unplugging/replugging a standard HDMI into the PS3 (random results, sometimes it works, sometimes it didn't)
- Went out and got the PS3 HDMI cable thinking it was a HDMI 1.3 issue. Had similar issues to the standard HDMI cable. Fix=unplugging HDMI cable and blowing in the HDMI port in the PS3 (new tactic seems to work consistently). Don't know if its the PS3 dust magnet or what but it works.
I think the handshake issue is with the HDMI port in the PS3 and how the PS3 manages HDCP. Not the westy. Just blow...
So what is the verdict from those who own the Westy 37"? Worth buying for the PS3? Im seriously considering buying it...
It's solid except for the HDMI issues. If I cycle a couple of inputs and go back, it works. Then, 10, 20, or 30 minutes later, it might happen again. Switch inputs, fine again.
The picture during Resistance was great. Mission Impossible looked great on it. Going to watch Blackhawk Down probably tomorrow to see how it looks. The downloaded preview clip looked great.
vincentnyc 12-19-06, 12:27 AM check this thread here...didnt even work when i get a hdmi-dvi cable!!!!

SOLDIER 12-19-06, 12:51 PM Hello, I am a current PS3 owner, and I recently bought the 37' 1080p Westy a couple of weeks ago. I experience the flickering problem like a few of you, though the simplest solution for me is to merely turn the TV off then on. I figured Sony can fix this in a future update, so it doesn't bother me.
However, according to some of you, an HDMI to DVI cable put on the DVI 2 port would fix this problem. My question though is whether HDMI to DVI would improve or lessen the quality in any way versus a straight HDMI to HDMI cable (which I currently use, bought from Monoprice)?
As I mentioned in another thread, I experience some minor color banding (my friend's words, not mine) during darker, grayish colors. It's quite apparent in Resistence during indoor areas or certain sky areas. I took a video of this problem, and you should be able to make out the horizontal lines clearly (focus on the stairs).
http://rapidshare.com/files/8088204/MVI_8766.AVI.html
The banding seems to be nonexistent on colorful games (like Genji 2 and Lemmings), but I've been trying to confirm with PS3 owners of the same TV whether this is a normal thing or not. Would the HDMI to DVI cable fix this problem in any way?
Are there any other issues with the PS3 and Westy I should know about? I bought this TV purely for the system, and I've been taking all precautions to make sure this was the best buy. So please help me with all my questions, thanks.
vincentnyc 12-19-06, 01:03 PM ah...did u even bother to read my last thread?
Will a hdmi-dvi cable resolve the so call infamous "flickering" problem?
A big fat NO!
SOLDIER 12-19-06, 01:25 PM Is the flickering the only issue you have? If so, it isn't really worth returning a whole TV for. Sony can easily fix this in one of their weekly updates.
What I want to know is if anyone else experiences the banding like in the video I posted. I really need solid confirmation on this.
Jiffylush 12-19-06, 02:08 PM ah...did u even bother to read my last thread?

Going Hdmi-->dvi1 fixed my flickering problem (the HDMI/HDCP sync problem). I still get the occasional garbled screen when switching resolutions, but I got that from my htpc as well. (therefore a problem with the TV)
dvi2 did not work for me, no signal.
The HDMI sync problem appears to me to be a ps3 problem, it may be worse on some tv's but considering that I can switch resolution coming from my TiVo S3 and never have the issue makes me feel like this is a problem caused my the PS3s implementation of HDMI/HDCP.
Maybe it needed to be stricter due to the blu-ray but either way it is a problem that sony needs to be looking at hard.

what westinghouse 37" model u got? i got the w3 and it is the complete opposite...my dvi2 work..but still "flickering" issue. when plug into dvi1..no pix..."garbled" pix as u may say.
so im beginning to think westinghouse brand is a piece of sh*t. im not gonna buy any more new tv from them in the future.

LVM-42w2, and I love it, works great with my TiVo S3, and fine with my PS3, I got it for 1749 no tax, free shipping. 1080p looks amazing, etc. etc.
There are posts in the TV area about experiences with the westinghouses, lots of people have had problems, lots of people haven't, I guess you are one of the ones that has.
vincentnyc 12-19-06, 05:34 PM yeah..depend on what model..u have 42" w2...i have the 37" w3...i think all the ppl that have my model have "flickering" problem.
GamerX52986 12-19-06, 07:34 PM I'm using the 32" Westy model 32w6 for both my PS3 and Xbox 360. I have both set at 720p and it works great. I'm using a Acoustic Research hdmi cable that I bought at Best Buy for the PS3 and had no issues with it working. Also recently purchased a Sammy 32" 3251 model and it works perfectly fine as well. Though the picture on the Sammy is slightly better overall.

I have the 37 in v3 and with firm 1.0 it is not your tv set it is the PS3. That is the piece of rushed s*it you are talking about. Hdmi works fine with everything but my PS3. Guess what the same problem happens when I connect it to my Sony Home Theater Projector. Just harrass the heck out of Sony for putting out a rushed brick of poo and enjoy your set.
SOLDIER 12-19-06, 10:20 PM Do you experience color banding on your PS3 games? Like Resistance or the NBA 07 demo?

well i just discuss this with my coworker who consider himself an expert in the field of hdtv and he said the following:
my coworker told me that reason why westinghouse tv is so cheap cuz "what u pay is what u get." meaning the quality control isn't that great, that's y my tv is cheaper than sony, samsung, and panasonic etc. brand. he said i was one of the unlucky few that got a bad unit. that's y u hear some westy owner have this flickering problem and other don't.

LotusElise 12-21-06, 12:49 AM What about people NOT using a Monoprice cable?
Can anyone confirm if they are using another brand of cable and still have this problem?
vincentnyc 12-21-06, 09:25 AM i use a different no name brand for hdmi-hdmi...still fickering problem.
jeansamedi 12-21-06, 01:11 PM after reading this thread, i called westinghouse to tell them that I have a problem with my ps3 and the lvm-37w3's (firmware 1.5) hdmi port. He told me that they actually went out and purchased a ps3 to check it out and have come up with a software update to fix it. The catch is that I have to send my unit to their warehouse in California for them to "upgrade" it. It would be 2 weeks of shipping back and forth, and then time for labor etc. Has anyone done this that confirm it works? I'm not even sure its worth it.
WYSEGUY 12-21-06, 01:25 PM im out of town right now, but when i get back after xmas break i have a 3 year in-home service agreement, which i think this would fall under so i'll see if they can have someone come to update it...
jeansamedi 12-21-06, 02:09 PM cool. i'm hoping that anyone else who has this problem could call and see if you get the same deal and if the csr also tells you that there is a software/firmware update.

I have been meaning to but haven't yet. It's looking like next week when I'm off for a couple days will when I can get to it.
Who were they suggesting pay for all that shipping? Seems like their TV is broke, they should pay to fix it.

I would be shocked and amazed if sony couldn't implement hdmi well enough to make its own products work together.
But that doesn't make it compliant with the standard implementation of HDMI, the standard that other manufacturers are using, tivo, cablebox, dvd players, etc etc.
well i just discuss this with my coworker who consider himself an expert in the field of hdtv and he said the following:

Your coworker is an hdtv expert?
You realize where you are right? If you have questions about HDTV this is the resource to get help, just check out the other areas, people here are insanely knowledgeable.
He may be knowledgeable, but this is one of the single best resources I have found for all things AV related, and it just happens to have a lively PS3 thread as well.
jeansamedi 12-21-06, 02:42 PM i didnt ask about shipping. i was (and still am) at work when i called so i couldnt give them the serial number of my tv to complete the rma. when i call them tonight around 7pm est ill let you know about the shipping.
if this is true and they really did fix the problem with the hdmi compatibility/handshaking issues it would be great. i'm pretty scared though to send it all the way to california. i have no dead pixels or scratches, my lvm-37w3 is really in pristine condition and i really dont want it to come back all banged up. if only there was a way to get a tech out here to do it!
On another note, my tv is firmware version 1.5. Do you think they would upgrade it to the final version while applying the hdmi update? When i call them, i'll ask about that too, if nothing else it could be a way to get future hdmi problems fixed and update your firmware. Anyway, i guess only time will tell if this is a true and bona fide hdmi solution for us westy + ps3 users. It would sure beat the hell out of switching inputs or the "blow" method.

ghibli303 12-22-06, 03:21 PM I have an LVM37w3 and I get the evil HDMI handshake flickering of death...
I contacted Westinghouse and they explained that their official postition is that they are aware of the issue and mentioned that many other brand models were having similar HDMI (or the exact same) issues and that Sony will be releasing a firmware in the near future (the question is: HOW NEAR?) :(
Because im OCD I also called Sony to check with this, and their tech support are quite 'retarded' (excuse my language). They said they were unaware of any problems with any tvs and that my particular tv is broken :P...so if Westy is lieing then they are in big trouble, which i doubt, if you talk to the techies @ sony, they are quite uneducated with the system itself and they are not even real techies, just phone helpers (they probably never even touched a system yet) :o
Just wait out for the fix and until then...Four of the annoying solutions:
1. Unplug HDMI and replug until it stops
2. Turn off the TV then turn it back on
3. switch to another input for 3-5 seconds then switch back
4. Use component and forget about 1080p until a fix :(
I just turn the tv off, because sometimes switching inputs doesn't work ALL the time...Good luck guys, and lets pray Sony is working on this (i mean its sony, they will, they are just slow)
*** side note, I am using a 3rd party 20 dollar cable...and I tried the official PS3 hdmi and no fixes...This is a digital cable, not analog, so its either on or off (0's and 1's) and i have tried and HD DVD player with HDMI and it works with no problems...this is a Sony problem as their own BD players are reported to have HDMI handshake issues.
I Need Help With The Hdmi Cables With The Ps3. I Just Got My And I Tryed To Use Hdmi To Hdmi And I Dont Get Nothing. Do I Have To Buy There Hdmi Cables? At First I Though My Ps3 Didnt Work But Tryed Av Cable And It Work.
Here are my findings:
Model: LVM-47w1
Date: 5/22/06
Version: 1.04
PS3 System Software 1.32
1. PS3 HDMI to Westy HDMI, no good. It flickers every 2/3 seconds. I gave up.
2. PS3 HDMI to Westy DVI-1 and set the PS3 output to 1080P. When switching from DVD and/or 720p games I got synch issues. Workaround for this to turn the monitor off/on or cycle through digital inputs (i.e. DVI-1, DVI-2, HDMI).
3. PS3 HDMI to Westy DVI-2 and set the PS3 output to 1080P. NO ISSUES.
Hope this help.

Parafly9 12-27-06, 10:49 AM Any updates on this issue?
Still wondering about the HDMI -> DVI link. I have a 42" 1080p set, will this solve the flickering issue?
I have the Westy 37w1 and in the manual it states that DVI2 port is not 1080p, in fact it is a much lower rez port. The DVI1 port is 1080p and will run 1920x1080. Is this the case with newer versions of the Westy 37?
pulsation 01-06-07, 12:14 AM Hey guys, Newbie here...
I can feel all of your pain in regards to this Westinghouse Issue. I myself have a Westinghouse LVM-37w1, firmware v. 1.05. I purchased the monitor last holiday season through Best Buy for about $1700. It seemed like a great purchase at the time, especially since 1080p was practically unheard of about a year ago. I've had great experiences watching HD Cable and watching upconverted DVDs via a Samsung DVI DVD player. Well, I've been waiting anxiously for more than a year to hook up a PS3 to this baby, and of course I start experiencing the 'handshake' issues all of you have. Sometimes I can get a 1080p signal over DVI-1, but a lot of the time all I get is a grayscale scrambled mess. I can try different things like unplugging the HDMI end from the PS3, reinserting the plug and I get a good picture. I can also try cycling through the inputs, and occasionally that will work. Nothing is guaranteed, though, and I refuse to keep doing such things just so I can watch movies and play games at the 'holy grail' of resolutions, the main reason I bought the damn TV in the first place...1080p.
I've tried using numerous cables, from Monster to Sony's own HDMI 1.3 spec cable specifically designed for 1080p output from the PS3. All have failed to give me a reliable 1080p picture. I've spent many minutes with tech support for Sony and Westinghouse. Both say they don't support the HDMI to DVI connection. So I did some digging around and found this:
The VisionFC4 HDMI to VGA converter.
This baby is a powered unit that takes an HDMI signal of ANY resolution, be it 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p, and converts it into an analog RGB/Component video signal. No scaling occurs; the input resolution is maintained in the conversion process. Fortunately, the VGA input on most of our TVs accepts inputs of up to 1080p. So I figured I'd order this guy up and give it a go. I was initially concerned it wouldn't pass the full 1080p signal since it was only HDMI 1.1 compliant. But once I got it today, I hooked it up and was pleasantly suprised with the results.
I hit the menu button on the TV, powered the PS3 up, popped in X-Men 3 and looked at the System Info...low and behold, under "VGA" the resolution reads "1920X1080"!!!! I had to fool around with the brightness and contrast settings, but now it looks as good as it ever did over DVI, in my opinion, without the reliablity issues. The downside of the unit is that it is a little pricey, at just under $200. I got mine off ebay for about $197 after shipping. Do I think it is worth the price? Yes. In the future when I will be adding other HDMI devices to my setup (Blu Ray or HD DVD Standalone players), I can be confident knowing that I can sidestep the HDMI hiccups entirely. But that is for you to ultimately decide.
Just thought I would pass this on, hopefully it will give some of you some comfort over an unexpected and unpleasant issue. Take care!!!
TimHuey 01-26-07, 02:01 PM I called in for Service on my Westy 37w1. The tech came out and saw the HDCP problem and yep we have to take it to the shop. It doesn't work. So now I wonder what the heck they are going to possibly do at the "Shop" to fix the problem. Are they going to find out it's a known issue with Westy's and refund, or exhange the set? None of my HDCP devices work on either DVI port. They all loose sync and the device scambles the picture.
Is Westinghouse going to try and deny the problem now? Just curious. I will of course let everyone know what the outcome is from this episode. I have the Best buy 2 year service agreement and the set is 1year 2 months old. I used the Best buy number to schedule the service call. Anyone had any history dealing with these best buy service plans? Did I just waste $240?

Parafly9 01-26-07, 02:15 PM I talked to Westinghouse again today for the pS3 issue. they said you need a 24-PIN DVI cable (most are only 18?) and the you need to plug it into DVI-2 to work. They are sending everyeon with 42" TV's + a free cable if you ask... the guy said cable should be here in 10 - 15 days. (HDMI - > DVI Cable)

Seems like you need a 24 pin for the 37 inch models, however I have an 18 pin one from mono that works fine on DVI2 on the 42 inch Westy.
TimHuey 01-26-07, 05:45 PM I have two 24 pin and one Flat pin HDMI to DVI connectors. One on DVI 1 and One on DVI 2. I still get the HDCP sync issues on the westy 37w1 from the PS3 and Moto Cable box.

That's actually pretty strange...I am using a monoprice HMDI--> DVI cable (have no idea about # of pins) and it works great in DVI-2. Did not work worth a damn in DVI-1. Wonder what' up with the difference in DVI ports???

So, are you not getting sync issues when you use the HDMI --> DVI cable?
PS3 must be on DVI 2 using a HDMI to DVI cable or adaptor.
TimHuey 02-27-07, 02:06 PM Well guys, as of a few days ago I am no longer a part of this thread. BB called and said the shop was unable to fix the Flashing/scrambled picture when connected to HDCP content and that my TV was being sent to BUYOUT. Whatever that is. It came back to my house and I took it back to BestBuy and traded it in for a Sony 40V2500 XBR Bravia set. No flashing, No HDCP scramble so far on the new set. Best of luck to you guys. I hope Westinghouse issues a firmware upgrade soon to fix this issue. It was a capable TV at a reasonable price.
Parafly9 02-27-07, 02:33 PM Hey Guys, just wanted to update that I did in fact pick up a DVI -- HDMI cable for the PS3 and the LVM-42w2.
No issues anymore, PS3 works flawlessly.
I'm a very happy camper right now. The only thing that would make me like this TV more woud be if it responded quicker to remote control inputs, especially on my Harmony remote.
grant0830 03-08-07, 11:43 AM I have found some great news, I recently purchased the Denon AVR-887 receiver to add to my LVM-47W1 / PS3 combination. At first I was hesitant to hook up an HDMI cable out from the Denon to the Westy, so I went the HDMI-DVI route. This left me with the "sparkles" issue. So, I was left with using an HDMI cable out of the Denon into the HDMI in the Westy. What I have found is that the Denon's HDCP timing cycle fixes the handshaking problem that we have all experienced from the PS3 out to Westy in (when you hook the PS3 into the Denon and pass it through to the Westy). I have tested it over 100 times and NO PROBLEMS!!! I found the Denon at a very reasonable price online and it is a level-6 receiver and is future proof as long as Sony releases the ability to decode DTS-HD in the PS3. Enjoy and Cheers!!
SpeakerX 03-29-07, 06:36 AM I'm pleased to announce that after setting up my new Onkyo TX-SR604 receiver my own handshaking issue between the LVM-47W1 and the PS3 has been resolved! :D
Currently I have both the PS3 and a SA8300HD hooked up to the Onkyo using a couple 3' Monoprice 28AWG HDMI cables. The Onkyo is connected to the LVM-47W1 with a 6' Monoprice 24AWG net-jacket HDMI cable.
I have tested this out for the last two weeks and haven't seen a single flicker. I don't know if this fix will work for everyone, but it might be helpful to someone just setting up their home theater like I was. Let me know if any of you have any further questions about my configuration.
Jiffylush 03-29-07, 09:29 AM I have the LVM-42w2, a PS3 and a TiVo S3.
Tivo works fine over hdmi, of course the PS3 does not.
The PS3 basically works over DVI-1 with an HDMI/DVI adapter from monoprice (image gets scrambled frequently).
My DVI-2 does not seem to work with either the TiVo or PS3 over the same cable that works on DVI-1.
My question is, will I have to send it back, or can someone come out and fix it?
I will call them tonight but just wondered if anyone had any previous experience.
Parafly9 04-09-07, 09:43 AM My LVM-42W is working great with the DVI-2 connection. No problems. i had big problems w/ the HDMI and never tried DVI-1
GW-SMOkeY 04-09-07, 09:50 AM 37w3 over HDMI here.
You have to consider one thing though, this might not be the best off brand or not as popular, but their w3-w2 series are fine, and best bang for the buck 1080p Monitors.
Hence the "monitors" - it is, since it does not come with a built in tunner, however my model came with 5 ports that can all do 1080p. HDMI, 2DVI-D, VGA, 2Componnet.
Right now I have the PS3 over HDMI, and the only issue I experience, which happens once in a while, and only when the screen has to adjust resolutions, is that HDCP looses sync.
There are easy fixes around this.
1) Turn Off, then turn on your Monitor - Instant Fix ( permanent )
2) Jump to another input, than back to HDMI.
3) Press the "i" button ( I came up with this solution ) and many followed after, all it does is lists the screen res, and when it says no-signal, soon as you hit that button it will somehow sync it back up.
So with that in mind, I did call Westinghouse, and they did promise a HDMI-DVI cable that I havent received just yet...
Anyway, for the money I paid it is the best BANG FOR THE BUCK SCREEN on the market period!
You can pick up the 37" model for 800-1000 shipped.
Know that the PQ is good as any LCD offered by SONY especially the new series.
However, it does lack in some features, its probably the most complete set you can buy. Very good bang/preformance ration.
I highly recommend it!
CNET, and few other places have a great review on this set, take a look.
Edit: This issue is the actual HDCP issue with the Westy, and westy has addressed the issue, a TV firmware should fix the issue. Hopefully the cable comes trough. Its taking way to long for the cable btw. However, if a firmawre fixes this issue, then ill stick with HDMI all the way.

i recieve the hdmi-dvi cable from westy after like 2 months...probelm still exist.
even if westy come out with a firmware (which i highly doubt)...are u willing to ship ur tv back to them in california to fix this problem?
GW-SMOkeY 04-09-07, 10:08 AM Fjtorres: thank u.
So I definetly will experience this problem when I get my hdmi cable and connect ps3 to my tv thru hdmi? If so, this will totally sux! How do I resolve this problem?
Waren't you already complaining about the same stuff in the "Westy Wars" thread? I clearly remembered that you used HDMI, and bitched constantly in regards to that issue.
Fortunately it is not a bad issue at all, a small annoyance that only happens when you have change the source. And only happens during that time, its not like it happens mysteriously and randomly...

NO! However if they did pay for shipping sure, and if they decide to fix the issue trough my BB outlet thats fine.
Lets say all fails, and they dont. I still wont mind the issue. For the price I paid, I can't complalin. Story ends there...
So even if lets say they drop it all together, who cares? Its not like you were playing a game and then all of a sudden it starts to loose authentication.
GW-SMOkeY 04-09-07, 10:12 AM hdmi-dvi cable will transfer both video and audio just like the hdmi-hdmi, correct? meaning i dont need another white and yellow cable right?
No! Only VIDEO! BTW, I thought you knew all this, again coming from the other thread, and pretty much being told the same thing over and over.
So to answer all your questions, just read my post.

this was way back when i knew nothing about dvi-hdmi or in the field of audio or video. but now i know more...but thx for trying to embarass me...i put u in ignore base on this and also the comment u post when i try to answer ur thread.
GW-SMOkeY 04-09-07, 11:13 AM Hey no problem, it just the way you approach things bro. You know this from experience, at least from the other thread. Thats all.
However, as far as the Westy goes, its is the best bang for your buck with only one small glitch that happens once in a few times, and is easy fix as simply hitting the info button.
blkdog7 04-09-07, 11:48 AM Can PS3 owners with a Westinghouse LCD comment on HDMI use and what Westy set you have... thanks
Reported maybe working here, but no update on 5 sec fix??

I have the 37W1 1080p 37" Westy and my PS3 plugged into DVI #2 with an HDMI/DVI cable. I have no issues at all it works PERFECT.
However, I did have the refresh issue ONE TIME only when I went from Ratchet and Clank (PS2 game) back to the PS3 menu. The screen freaked out. You do not have to unplug the cable. Simply use the Westy's remote to switch to another input and then back to DVI to fix. But, this only happened ONCE. Other than that it works flawlessly and looks fantastic on my LCD.
GW-SMOkeY 04-09-07, 12:11 PM I have the 37 in v3 and with firm 1.0 it is not your tv set it is the PS3. That is the piece of rushed s*it you are talking about. Hdmi works fine with everything but my PS3. Guess what the same problem happens when I connect it to my Sony Home Theater Projector. Just harrass the heck out of Sony for putting out a rushed brick of poo and enjoy your set.
Get a life dude!
GW-SMOkeY 04-09-07, 12:19 PM Westy confirmed that it is an compatability issue with their set. They are aware of the issue, and the simple solution is to call in and have them ship you an DVI-HDMI cable - which in my case has been before new years... Still waiting...
I cant belive that they still havent shipped my cable. Now, hopefully they do write up a firmware that will fix this on either side. Hopefully they do it soon before the waranty expires to... I'll be pissed if they do that.

I have the Westinghouse LVM-37W1 and PS3 firmware 1.6. HDMI/DVI works PERFECTLY. I have zero complaints. Did I get lucky? Also, I have mine plugged into DVI-2. This is the port that accepts 1080p. I couldn't even get DVI-1 to work, no picture.

Blkdog7,
The last time I talked with Westinghouse in Jan '07 they told me the latest firmware update was 1.05. You must have gotten really lucky. I don't understand how your DVI-2 is displaying 1080p since it is only rated for 1080i/720p and lower. Is there anyway you can send me a pic or post a shot of your screen set to DVI-2 showing the system info from the menu screen? It will show the input, resolution, and firmware version. I'm working with the store where I purchased my 37W1 and they are emailing Westinghouse on these issues and this could really help. Thanks and congrats on having a clean working westy with your PS3.

No, my PS3 is firmware 1.6, not my Westy. I am not sure what the firmware version of my Westy is. How can I check? And, can this be upgraded?? I would be more than happy to post images later tonight.

I have read in several places that the documentation is wrong. It is in fact DVI 2 that is 1080p. And, well, I agree!! It works PERFECT for me. I have the same TV as you. Try DVI #2!
willmgordon 04-10-07, 09:53 AM I have seen other people with 37w1 who work over DVI, its us poor schmoes with the "better" 37w3 that are stuck up &$*# creek without a paddle, damn you Westy!

Blkdog7,
You can check your resolution, Hz, and firmware version by having your PS3 turned on, then turn on your TV and select the DVI input your using with your PS3. Then, press the "MENU/EXIT" button on your remote and go to the last tool option to your right called "GENERAL SETTINGS" and then down to "SYSTEM INFO". It will tell you if your picture is truly 1920 x 1080, what Hz, and the firmware version. Let me know what you come up with. You've almost got me convinced to try the DVI-2 port even though the manual says it only goes up to 1080i.

Yes, I am aware how to check the resolution in the TVs menu. That's how I KNOW it is running at 1920 x 1080!!! Trust me, I am not lying here. I am truly running at 1080p on DVI-2!!
I'll check everything tonight and let you know the firmware version.
Also, look here:
But back to my original topic: 1080p DVI input. My experience in this regard has shown that, somebody in Westinghouse engineering or their documentation department cannot count to 2. And yes, I am serious.
When I got my new DVD-HD960, I plugged it into DVI1, because that's what the manual told me to do. I used a high quality HDMI-to-DVI cable. The DVD-HD960 defaulted to 480p mode when I first plugged it in (mode selection was set to "Auto"). I set mode selection to "Manual" then told it to do 1080p. What I got after a few seconds was a jagged mess of oblique lines. It looks like the scan rate of the input signal was not meshing with what the TV thought the scan rate was (or what the TV was capable of). Yuck! I thought I was pretty much doomed at this point.
However, I read somewhere on that somebody else had problems plugging their computer into DVI1, but for some reason DVI2 worked just fine. So, I swapped to DVI2 and, lo and behold, it worked! I can verify that the signal really is 1080p by going to the TV's setup menu displaying the properties of the input signal.
But back to the DVI1 vs. DVI2 thing. To me it seems that the TV is giving every indication that DVI2 is in fact the 1080p port optimized for computers and DVI1 is the 1080i port optimized for cable boxes. The other thing I notice is that when the cable box (a Motorola DCT6412III DVR from Comcast) is plugged into DVI1, it happily and automatically outputs 1080i to it and even detects that it has a 16:9 aspect ratio. On the other hand, if I plug it into DVI2 it thinks my TV is 4:3 and it only outputs 720p to it. I can force the DVR to output 1080i and to 16:9 aspect in its setup menu, but it just seems to me like more evidence that the TV's DVI2 is trying to act more like a DVI connection on a computer monitor (giving less info and negotiating the highest progressive resolution that both devices are capable of), while DVI1 seamlessly interfaces with my cable box.
Consequently, I have a suspicion that--at least for my particular unit--DVI2 and DVI1 are in fact switched around from what Westinghouse says they are. My 37w1 is a later production model (SN ends in 0545). Perhaps at some point in production, they decided to swap DVI1 and DVI2? It does kind of make sense to do this. DVI1 is probably the port that most people will plug they cable box or tuner into, and it's also the port that a retailer would plug their 1080i video source into when the TV is on display. But if so, would it now make sense to document this??! Or at least tell the tech support people?
I found that here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/printthread.php?t=673545&page=5&pp=30

16. RE: PS3 Blinking Mystery Deepens—Westinghouse:
I have a LVM37W1 37" 1080p Westinghouse. My friend brought a ps3 over and we hooked it up to the DVI 1 port and the screen was all green and unreadable. We hooked it up to the DVI 2 port and set the ps3 to 1080p and lo and behold it worked!!! I checked the settings on the TV and it registered as 1080p even though we used the DVI 2 port. Also, I have an Onkyo reciever with HDMI switcher, so I had HDMI to HDMI from the receiver and PS3 and hdmi to DVI from receiver out to tv. I think the firmware on the tv is 1.05. Hope it helps.
I found that here:
http://www.popularmechanics.com/blogs/technology_news/4212233.html
These are just a few examples I found on the internet that says that DVI-2 is actually the 1080p port!!! AND, it works!!
cubalis2 04-11-07, 01:21 PM I have read in several places that the documentation is wrong. It is in fact DVI 2 that is 1080p. And, well, I agree!! It works PERFECT for me. I have the same TV as you. Try DVI #2!
I also have the W1, and notice that I can get the DVI2 input to display 1920x1080 but with a large problem - whenever it is in that mode there is a very noticeable blue 'haze' surrounding most images. It is at its peak when something like smoke or fog is on screen.
Sometimes it is less noticeable then others, but every 1080p source I have tried it can be seen if you get close enough. I would show a pic, but am camera-less at the moment.
So for me, while the DVI2 port solved the handshake issues it added something I wasn't willing to live with.
Back to DVI1 @720p/1080i for me.

Have you ever seen anything like this on your set?
And yes, I have tried a few different cables with no change.

Either you guys are too damn picky or I am just lucky! :P
I don't have any blue haze, sparkles, or any of the stuff I keep reading about. It looks fantastic and works perfectly with no compromises and just as good and fine as my 360 over VGA does or my Wii over component does. I am a happy gamer! I love my Westy and am happy that I had all the right inputs to realize the full potential of all my consoles. Viva La DVI 2! :)
blkdog7 04-11-07, 06:16 PM Ok, guys, here you go....
I took three photos of GT HD on my Westy. As you can clearly see it's on DVI-2 and is running in 1080p. Also, note that I am sporting 1.5 firmware if that matters.
I do know that my Westy was probably from one of the last W1 batches. I bought it from Crutchfield about 2 weeks before they started selling the W3. I was mad at the time but maybe now I am happy I did get the W1! :)

Blkdog7 & Cubalis2,
You guys made my day!!! :) I switched my output from DVI1 to DVI2 and it worked liked a charm. What in the heck is wrong with Westy, it clearly states in their manual that only DVI1 can output 1080p, but my monitor shows that it's displaying 1920x1080 out of DVI2. I can't believe it. I've played movies, games and downloads this morning without a hitch. You guys saved me lots of fustration and time. I was on the verge of returning my monitor today and spending twice as much on a Sharp. My wife is very happy that she won't have to hear me complaining about this anymore. I initially tried using the DVI2 input when I bought the system and it would only go to 1080i, but maybe one of the PS3 firmware updates helped this along. You guys are awesome!! Thanks for the help.

These pics should show what I'm talking about, even though they are from my 7 year old digital camera I dug out...
I have tried 2 different HDMI/DVI cables from different manufacturers, and also bypassing my 81TXV receiver but to no avail. If anyone has any suggestions please make them :)

its hard to see on this one, but look near the bottom. It is more apparent in person too.
blkdog7 04-11-07, 08:40 PM Wow, that looks horrid. I have never seen anything remotely close to that. Are you using REALLY cheap cables? I know mine was only $5.00 on Ebay but maybe it is good enough and I am not getting those odd blue things. The PS3 menu does look near perfect. I see that blue curved line, is that the problem?
blkdog7 04-11-07, 08:41 PM BTW -- My Westy is plugged in directly to my PS3. My receiver does not get the signal then pass it on.
cubalis2 04-11-07, 11:08 PM Yes, the curved blue line in the XMB is the main problem, but when I get up close I can see more 'pixels' of blue in other spots.
Right now I am using a monoprice 10' 28 gauge HDMI-DVI cable. The other cable I tried was from Futureshop, asid tech or something like that. I noticed we have the same TV firmware and manufacture date, which makes me want to go try yet another cable just in case that is the issue.
I think I'll try hooking up my PC with DVI2 and running some 1920x1080 material to see if the problem is there as well. If so I think I can stop questioning a cable issue and move on with my life :D
3) Press the "i" button ( I came up with this solution ) and many followed after, all it does is lists the screen res, and when it says no-signal, soon as you hit that button it will somehow sync it back up.
Thank you for posting this technique! That is so much easier than switching to DVI and back.
I'm going to wait to see if Sony can fix this on their end or if the Westinghouse firmware will ever sneak out to the public. If not, I may break down and try to get my 37w3 serviced.

Cubalis2,
I noticed the same type of blue line on my XMB, but I didn't see it in the BD movie, 1080p NBA 2K7 game or Gran Turismo HD. I bought my cable off UBID for $9 and it's a LinXcel 10' 28AWG HDMI to DVI cable with gold plated connectors. Was that Harry Potter video a DVD or a BD? If it's not a BD, try one and see if you get the same thing. Also, my firmware is version 1.05 and the serial number ends in 0174 so I don't think it was one of the later models.
BTW, is there anyway to get regular DVDs to play in 16:9 or fill the screen when playing them from the PS3?

Yes, press <-> button on the Westy's remote and select "fill".
It will stretch 16:9 content that is smooshed in normal mode.

Blkdog7,
I used to only get the 4:3 picture when it was plugged into DVI1, but since plugging it into DVI2 that issue is resolved also, it fits my screen perfectly in 16:9 now. Thanks again for sharing!

The Potter video was the 1080p trailer of Order of the Phoenix. Sadly the problem persists with BD, 1080p games, and also when using my PC at 1920x1080 with DVI 2.
I think the issue is definately my TV... but that doesn't mean I wont try another cable anyways. :p
Jiffylush 04-17-07, 11:03 PM Update on my HDMI/HDCP issue with my LVM-42W2:
Just hooked up my new Sony DG810 and the PS3, TiVo S3 and Westy are all playing nicely over HDMI alone.
I tried booting the PS3 and watching a couple of movies (bd only so far), audio over HDMI is working great from both the PS3 and the TiVo and I have not lost sync on the PS3 once.
badcrumble 04-20-07, 11:54 AM Glad to hear that worked - do you think any receiver would solve this problem? Or is there a particular feature I should be looking for in it? I absolutely want a setup that fixes the problem for me, but I'd like 7.1 if possible as well :/

The Sony DG910 is 7.1, plus it upconverts to HDMI, it is $499 and comes out next month.
You might want to look at the new Onkyo 605, it is also 7.1 and it comes out next month, should also be $499. You might want to wait and see if others have sync problems with the PS3 (there were some audio issues between the 604 and PS3).
There is also a Yamaha RX-V661, 7.1 also, msrp is $549 but I am pretty sure you can get it for $499.
Any of these should work fine, but just make sure the place you get it from is good on returns just in case you have a problem (like the audio drop out on the onkyo 604).

Just so I can make price/feature comparisons - do you think there would be any problems if I just went with a HTIB setup and just used fiber optic for the audio? And HDMI->DVI for video if necessary, etc. I suppose if I did do all that, 7.1 would be less likely.
Jiffylush 04-20-07, 01:05 PM If you are going HDMI->DVI then you probably aren't having the HDMI handshaking issue.
Optical would be fine for 7.1, you are just going missing the uncompressed PCM streams that are on some Blu-ray movies. Finding a nice HTiB that is also 7.1 might be a bit of a challenge, you should probably ask about it over in the speaker area.

Hi,
I have the 37W3 and as everyone else experience crap connection with PS3, even by going HDMI-->DVI2. So would be very interested in a solution here.
What you are saying is that with a receiver you have no more probs ? The connection would be PS3 HDMI to receiver HDMI with the receiver then outputing to the westy HDMI ? That seems to be possible since I just checked that the receiver in question has 3 hdmi inputs.
thx
willmgordon 04-26-07, 10:46 AM yeah using a new 1.3 spec receiver appears to solve the sync issue

Yes, I am only using HDMI from the PS3 and TiVo to the Receiver, then out to the TV.
I no longer have to unplug the hdmi cable, change inputs, or powercycle the tv to get the PS3 working.
windwaves 04-26-07, 01:45 PM ok guys ... thank you much for confirming.
Still a bit disappointing but at least it seems like a solid solution. I needed a reveiver anyhow (and speakers and ....)
khstng50 04-27-07, 06:56 PM I have a 27" W6 i think hooked up via HDMI and I get this crackling sound sometimes from certain games. It works fine for movies it is just some games. What should I have my settings on for audio. I have a digital audio cable(not optical) out to my reciever. It will make this sound through the radio or the TV speakers it doesnt matter.
onejake 05-01-07, 05:03 PM Thanks for all of the help on this thread. I just purchased the PS3 and had the same problem. Frustrating is not the beginning of it. Honestly, both Westinghouse and Sony are to blame. However, considering that the Westy's aren't able to have the firmware updated easily, (unlike the 07 models which you can update the firmware via a usb port) you would think Sony could simply update the firmware on the PS3 to allow a fraction of a second more for the HDCP handshake to be accomplished. Either way, this should have never happened.
Here's some more info regarding the response from Westinghouse after Popular Mechanics uncovered the problem. (and AFTER Westinghouse said they would upgrade the firmware at no cost)

That'll teach me to look at the date. Thanks for clarifying that.
Anymore updates since that time?
willmgordon 05-02-07, 09:26 AM Nope, Westy has stated that Sony needs to increase the authentication time by a few milliseconds and Sony has not said anything, so we are officially S.O.L. ;)
househusband36 05-03-07, 08:23 AM Ok, I have read through this thread but, it seems that all the panels that you guys are talking about are 1080p my buddy bought an westy about a month ago from bust buy :) model W4207 which is 720p/1080i he just bought a new receiver last night and is having problems setting it up. Hes said something about the display flashing on and off could this be the receiver or is an issue like the other on this thread. he is using a sony STRDG510. You would think with a sony receiver and the ps3 things would work correctly but such is life. Any comments would help. thanks.
steve
willmgordon 05-03-07, 10:59 AM Has he tried directly connecting the PS3 and TV to see if thats the problem? I would do that first, if not then its probably the receiver.

The 1080p 37" panel I have does the same flickering/HDMI handshake problems with a new cable box my parents got. I have to turn the box off then on after starting the TV, or switch inputs a few times and go back to HDMI.
I'm leaning toward the 'Westinghouse's HDMI implementation is a bit shoddy' camp.

i have the 37" w3 model. can any1 here confirm the latest update from sony fixes the handshake probelm for this tv?
use_of_weapons 05-24-07, 12:35 PM I can confirm that the handshake issue is fixed with the 37w3 (firmware V1.0). For example on the Angel Season 1 DVDs, it used to flicker every time I went to the menu and back to the video -- really annoying. With the latest update it now transitions cleanly and there is no flicker on startup. Coupled with the DVD upscaling and PS2 upscaling and smoothing, the Westinghouse/PS3 is a *very* attractive combo :)

GW-SMOkeY 05-24-07, 12:47 PM It is fixed that is for sure! My westy over HDMI to HDMI does not blink anymore... HECK YEAH! I am happy with all the addition's and the fact that now my PSP connects to PS3 from everywhere...
Splamone 05-24-07, 12:48 PM Under firmware version 1.80, the PS3's HDMI Full Range (HDMI) setting resets to Limited every time you reset the system even though it says it's set to 'Full'! Damn this is frustrating as I thought they might have fixed this issue! Also, this setting is set to 'Limited' in games regardless so if you use the PS3 PS1/2 game scaler (or should we call that a slight zoom mode since it's not really scaling it at all!). :(
On the plus side, the scaler on DVDs seems to do a pretty decent job at least of removing jaggies.
GW-SMOkeY 05-24-07, 12:51 PM Um whats the problem now?
use_of_weapons 05-24-07, 01:07 PM Splamone, that is a PS3 issue on multiple sets -- check out the PS3/Blu-ray thread. It's not a Westy-only issue.
Fwiw, my theory on why the handshaking is fixed... It used to flicker when you changed resolutions. So, going from XMB to a DVD gives you a resolution change, and the flicker starts. Going from DVD video to DVD menu typically gives a resolution change, more flickering. Now with upscaling, everything is in native resolution, so no more tears. Whatever they did, this is a killer update.
talbain 05-24-07, 01:24 PM Um whats the problem now?
nothing. i've got to hand it to sony yet again. they've made a ton of mistakes with the ps3, but they are doing an OUTSTANDING job of correcting them...

It says 1080p for anything upscaled.
It does not upscale PS3 games (your tv will do that after it receives the 720p source).
no, the flicker issue is fixed regardless of upscaling

Wow, great, and I just bought those stupid DVI --> HDMI cable
I might just use my regular HDMI cable again now.
So it was sony all along and not all those bashing the Westies.
use_of_weapons 05-24-07, 02:46 PM Yeah Oldbucsfan, you are right -- my theory is bogus. After posting I checked Virtua Fighter 5, a 1080p game which had handshaking issues pre-update, now fixed. Clearly this was Sony's problem from the get-go... the 37w3 is really quite amazing to me for the price.

im confused...im gonna download the latest firmware tonite. if what u say is right..that it doesnt upscale ps3 720p game to 1080p..i think the flickering problem will still exist for ps3 720p game.
will see when i do a test on everything tonite...dvd, ps2, ps3 720p game. blu-ray movie extra content like actor/director comments/interviews in 480i.
vincentnyc 05-24-07, 03:35 PM i was told the recent update...ps3 now support 1080p/24. for ppl that doesnt know..24 mean 24HZ. most blu-ray film is in this 24HZ rate. before this update..ps3 upconvert it to 60HZ for all the blu-ray movie.
can any1 here confirm what HZ is the westy 37" w3 tv? usually is tell u that when u press the "info" button on the remote.
HD-Gaming 05-24-07, 09:46 PM Oh how I wish it was just being picky :p
These pics should show what I'm talking about, even though they are from my 7 year old digital camera I dug out...
I have tried 2 different HDMI/DVI cables from different manufacturers, and also bypassing my 81TXV receiver but to no avail. If anyone has any suggestions please make them :)

that is the exact problem I had, those blue sparkles everywhere, usually around the border of stuff
does anyone know if this was fixed with the 1.8FW update also?
vincentnyc 05-24-07, 10:05 PM ok just tested tonite with the latest ps3 updates for ps2 games, ps3 720p games, dvd, blu-ray movie extra 480p content...no flickering!!! i can confirm flickering problem is gone!!!
one weird think is i put in a ps2 game..winning eleven 2007 and select "fill" mode for aspect for the tv....there is still black bars on the left and right side of the tv...wtf? how come it doesnt fill or stretch to full screen? it happens on some of underworld: evolutions blu-ray extra 480p extra content also. any1 knows why this happen and how i can fill the whole screen?
one last question...does any1 know if this westinghousee w3 is a 24Hz, 48Hz, 60Hz, 72 Hz, etc. or what?

hate to quote myself on this, but it's really important
does anyone knnow of the blue sparkle problem some people had was fixed?
willmgordon 05-25-07, 10:18 AM Flickering gone I am sooooo happy. I never had blue sparklies, what Westy FW do those people have? I am running 1.5 and it always looked good.
tdetwile 05-25-07, 11:01 AM I'll also throw my hat in the circle - I've got a LVM-37w3 model, and was having the blinking issue through rev 1.70 software. The update to 1.80 works beautifully, and the DVD and PS1/PS2 upconversion is also good - I prefer Sony's deinterlacing and upconversion over Westinghouse's. And now it all comes over HDMI at 1080p!
This is exactly what I wanted when I invested in the PS3 and the 37w3 - I'm so happy!
badcrumble 05-25-07, 12:59 PM The sparklies are still there, unfortunately. However, I recently got an AMAZING deal at Tweeter since they're closing down and will be running a great 7.1 surround system with a great receiver (can't remember the make and model right now though). Hoping that I can just run HDMI through that to take care of the remaining HDCP problems with 1080p resolution, and if not, I can just do digital audio and DVI video. :) can't wait to hook it all up this weekend!
TheCuze 05-25-07, 01:44 PM Anyone notice any audio issues now when using hdmi directly into the monitor? I've never experienced this before, but now my Westy occasional gives a very annoying crackling sound when playing video with an audio format other than pcm. It doesn't happen with my dvd player or xbox 360 though, and like I said, Blu-ray PCM tracks seem to work just fine.
Also, for some reason, I can't run the audio through my component cables anymore. I could before 1.8, when I had HDMI > DVI in the DVI2 port, but now I get no sound out of them with the video set to HDMI. I've tried my component audio cables, as well as my old composite audio cables, and I get zero sound out of both the DVI2 and HDMI inputs now. I mean, great update overall, but wtf? Anyone else experience this, or have any ideas?

you need to go into audio options in the ps3 menu and you can select where you want the audio output to come from. select component or composite or toslink if you don't want to use hdmi. as for hdmi sound, no issues here...
TheCuze 05-26-07, 06:02 PM Yea, I know how to set up the audio / video output. As I said, I always used hdmi > dvi for video and component for audio, until this update. My problem is with the hdmi 'crackle' and the fact that audio over component no longer works for some odd reason. I'm merely asking if anyone else has experienced either of these problems.
talbain 05-26-07, 06:54 PM well i don't know what to tell you then. flawless playback here...
HD-Gaming 05-31-07, 06:58 PM what do you need to change to make it support 24hz after the 1.8 update?

This is great news. I brought these two together so I can use it at it's full potential. Great post thanx!
i've had no problems getting pristine 1080p to dvi1 on this set but the most recent ps3 update has introduced a small issue where going from xmb to games or bluray sometimes (but more than half the time) causes a blank screen. annoying but fixed by changing inputs then back to dvi1. anyone elso notice this with new update?
mcmikemc 06-03-07, 11:44 AM I am having issues to with a PS3 I just bought and my Westinghouse LVM-37w1.
Here is a video of the exact same problem I am having:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUJgXJctGng
I have seen this type of image before when I was using a HTPC. I had a cheap DVI cable connected to my 1080p DVI port and this same thing would happen. I bought a new cable and the problem was solved.
I can get the picture to work with my TV by turning it off and then back on, unplugging the cable, and switching inputs. If I just had to do one of those once it would be okay but I will have to do one of them 1-15 times. Any time the PS3 interrupts the video signal (which is a lot) it goes back to the scrambled video.
I have tried two different DVI->HDMI cables and 2 different DVI cables with a HDMI adaptor and still nothing :-(
I have 24 days left to return the PS3 to Best Buy so I am trying to get this problem resolved before then.
P.S. I have the latest firmware for the PS3.
mcmikemc 06-04-07, 08:04 AM I have the 37W1 1080p 37" Westy and my PS3 plugged into DVI #2 with an HDMI/DVI cable.
I put my DVI -> HDMI cable into port 2 and BAM it works all the time now. Looks like I will be keeping my new PS3.

Did you ever find a solution to this problem? I'm having the same problem on my LVM-37w1 (HDMI to DVI on both DVI ports). But the strange part is that I never had this problem before the 1.82 update.

on the w1 dvi 2 only supports 720p, only dvi 1 supports 1080p, you got to remember that this is a 1080p monitor from 2005
Connectors
QTY TYPE FORMATS SUPPORTED
1 DVI 1-HDCP + L/R Audio 480i/p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p
1 DVI2-HDCP + L/R Audio 480i/p, 720p, 1080i
1 VGA/D-Sub/RGB + Audio mini jack 480i/p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p
2 YPbPr Component Video + L/R Audio 480i/p, 720p, 1080i
1 S-Video+ L/R Audio 480i/p
1 Composite Video + L/R Audio 480i/p
1 L/R Audio out, Switched, Fixed & Variable Volume
So, if you want true 1080p you need to use dvi 1

I gave up using DVI-2, as the blue death was too strong.
For the time being I am using DVI-1 at 1080i... I think I'll look into the HDMI-VGA converter I saw a while ago though.
Seegs108 07-17-07, 01:06 AM For those of you who said it worked through your receivers. Do you think that an 2x1 HDMI Switch would also work without flaws theres a cheap one on monoprice.

Thanks for any info! :)

I have a 37w1 and want to get a PS3 mostly for blu-ray since I have a 360. Is it even worth it with this tv?

n3tfury 08-28-07, 02:19 PM well i just discuss this with my coworker who consider himself an expert in the field of hdtv and he said the following:
my coworker told me that reason why westinghouse tv is so cheap cuz "what u pay is what u get."
hate to bump up this quote, but that's some great "expert" advise your co-worker gave you.
shinookk 06-16-08, 08:45 AM Q: Can I play 1080p PS3 games or videos on the LVM-37w1 Monitor?
A: The LVM-37w1 was the first 1080p Monitor from WDE. The Unit has two DVI inputs: DVI1 and DVI2. The DVI2 input can be used to connect the PS3 displaying a 1080p signal. All it needs is an HDMI cable to the DVI digital signal and the additional audio cables from the PS3 to the LVM-37w1 monitor to display 1080p content. So PS3 via HDMI connected to the DVI2 input on the LVM-37w1 is no problem. Please make sure that the system has the FW revision 1.05 which can be reviewed in the OSD System info section.
That was from westinghouses' response. I will never buy any product from them.

I recently purchased a PS3 for my westinghouse 47" (HDMI2) and I notice similar blu-ray audio play back problems. It sounds a bit like the wind blowing into an open microphone.
Henri Claytor 01-21-09, 01:56 PM Hi everyone, I decided to register when I saw this post after doing a bit of homework on LVM-37w1, I've also purchased this monitor at the end of 07, FW 1.05. I purchased the ps3 recently and updated to 2.60. I noticed that there are green and red lines when I run the resolution up at 1080p on DVI2, but it will go away after the monitor "warms up", however, during the warm up, the display will flicker on and off (I assume that's the handshaking acting up). After that almost everything will work like it's supposed to except when I switch it to any other input and back then the screen will show snow @ 1080, has there been a solution to resolve this snow issue? I have not tried using the info button on the remote, but I will try that tonight.

Are you using a good quality HDMI cable and HDMI-DVI adapter? Or are you using a DVI cable with a DVI-HDMI adapter?
Henri Claytor 01-21-09, 09:40 PM Hi Aletuner,
Actually I am using a HDMI to DVI cable, I have both the DVI-D single link and the DVI-D dual link, I am currently using the DVI-D dual link for the TV, as far as quality is concerned, I'm not sure how to check that, the cables look quite thick and sturdy :P
Aletuner 01-22-09, 09:50 AM Hi Aletuner,

1) Just to eliminate the possibility of a cable issue, I would get a good HDMI cable from Monoprice or Blue Jeans Cable, as well as a HDMI--->DVI adapter. I have seen all kinds of display error issues and a vast majority of them I solved just by using some good quality cables instead of the cheap crap that ships with most displays.
2) Do you get this same issue when going in to the DVI1 port, or straight HDMI--->HDMI?
3) Are you going directly from your PS3 to the display or are there devices in between such as an A/V receiver?
Henri Claytor 01-22-09, 09:31 PM Thanks for the reply Aletuner,
1. I'll try the HDMI cables you've recommended
2. DVI1 port would only go up to 1080i and anything below 1080p does not seem to have this issue
3. Yes the cable is directly plugged into the PS3 and Monitor
Thanks in advance
almostinsane 01-22-09, 11:49 PM Its not the cable, Westinghouse made shity 37" monitors.
Aletuner 01-23-09, 09:13 AM Its not the cable, Westinghouse made shity 37" monitors.
Yes, some of them had issues. However some of those issues were resolved with swapping out a poor HDMI cable with a quality one.
Aletuner 01-23-09, 09:18 AM Thanks for the reply Aletuner,
1. I'll try the HDMI cables you've recommended
Good... both places have great prices. I have ordered several cables from both companies, and have always been quite happy with the quality, especially when you get it for so low a price. For most normal applications you can get a HDMI cable for right around $5!!!
2. DVI1 port would only go up to 1080i and anything below 1080p does not seem to have this issue
Well if the cables don't solve it, try contacting your seller or authorized service rep to see if you can get a firmware update. If none of these solves your issue, DVI1 is your backup plan...:D "only 1080i" is still a really good thing, especially if the Westy properly interpolates the fields.
Good luck!

I don't mean to bump this old post, but today I was fooling around with my tv and tried the PS3 on DVI2. Yes, the tv stated that it was running 1920x1080 , but the image was "juttering" like crazy. To see what I mean, play the burnout paradise demo and look at the text that scrolls on the bottom of the screen. On DVI 2 it looks like garbage and DVI 1 it is silky smooth. No way am I using input 2.
