Hi, I have a hidden run of Cat5e cable that I like to convert to HDMI if possible.
Does anyone know if its possible to make an HDMI cable out of cat5?
I know I could use an HDMI extender to do the trick but I don't want to spend $400 for an 8ft run. Worst case scenario I try run a new cable behind a molding or something.
Thanks!

You will have to run it behind the molding then. You most likely are not going to be able to build the cable.

An HDMI cable has 19 conductors. You aren't going to do that with a single Cat5e cable or even two. Plus, the pin spacing on the connector is so tight it would be prohibitively difficult to try and solder your own if you even had enough connectors. Use the cat5e cable to pull an HDMI cable behind it, or hide one behind the molding as you suggest.
My buddy has an HDMI cable buried in his ceiling that has had one end of the connector break off. Is there a way to fix it?

Not really. One more example of why HDMI was kind of a bad idea - the concept was okay, but the execution makes me shudder.

I know this is an OLD post but only just seen it while searching for HDMI info.
I agree wiht what you said. HDMI is fine for connecting components in one location basically a Digital version of SCART (European connector - all in one Audio/Video but both directions).
Unfortunatelly when I built my house HDMI was not around. Going the HDMI over Cat5 route is possible but expensive.
