theelviscerator 04-22-09, 09:37 AM The bass would possibly increase a few Dbs somehow but it won't just create bass unless the older version had issues that a BR transfer somehow magically corrected.
Unless they use some kind of bass synth that takes the lowest octave of sound or music then drops it a full octave or two, then reinserts it.
I have one myself..but don't use it anymore....made by DBX.
Worked quite well on VHS movies with crappy low end..

MIkeDuke 04-22-09, 10:38 AM Waterfall request:
The Day the Earth Stood Still - The scene where the scientists first approach the sphere in Central Park and you feel/hear what sound like huge footsteps in the distance, then the scientists ask each other, "Did you feel that?"
That one got one of the recessed can lights in my ceiling rattling like it never has before. I'd love to know what the primary frequency is of those footsteps.
Much thanks in advance,
Tim
Watched this last night. That scene was pretty cool. I felt that for sure. I was not watching a "spirited" levels but the effect was easily felt. Plenty of nice bass in this one. Definitely has multiple viewing potential.
sourbeef 04-22-09, 05:49 PM Hoo?? course I was stuck paying $30 for Iron Man 4 months ago..not it's half off .. :(
ha ha, I obviously was unsure when I first wrote it. For some reason at the time "who" just didn't look right:rolleyes:. I guess I had Hooville on my mind "from the Grinch movies/cartoon".
JBLsound4645 04-22-09, 06:40 PM Hoo?? course I was stuck paying $30 for Iron Man 4 months ago..not it's half off .. :(
Bugger our currency issues it’s the number in question here. $30.00! I paid I think it was £13.00 for IronMAn and its only been viewed once over GLORY which as been viewed more times than I’ve had hot dinners, now then.
Bugger Amazon Forest that is rubbish over hyped site. Use Google product search to track down the lowest possible price.;)

Problem with Hi-Fi stereo VHS tapes is low frequency buzzing noise that is sometimes noticeable. When I switched to laserdisc it was like having a 35mm projector running in the home. The sound was so smooth thou I wouldn’t mind a dbx subsonic device for add enhancement.
I did borrow a dbx expender once that I used for GLORY VHS PAL and the neighbour across the road, back around 1990, “turn that f^(king thing down” :D LOL oh I won’t forget that LOL, at least the thing worked.
I took it back to the music PA shop about week later as it was only on loan.
how can they add more depth ?
i'm sure they could do it some how
Independence Day is a movie i'd like to see with more bass added. that movie should have WOTW type bass
ID4 is only down to around 30Hz and 30Hz is damn loud in good THX cinema damn loud!
SbWillie 04-23-09, 08:22 AM everyone knows I meant `NOW it's half off' NOT not...
Question about the very last scene (after the credits roll) on "Max Payne" there is an absolutely ridiculous LFE passage to end the movie that goes on for about 5-7 seconds or so. I think it starts off around 40-45hz and ends up in the high teens would be my guess. It rattled my room like an earthquake!! I would love to see the waterfall on it, except I don't know of one out there on it. What a great demo that movie is for LFE material :D

Aren't you special. I was joking around not making fun of anyone. But when you think of it, it is a legitimate question since there was a ninja turtles movie released in the last year or so. Im positive there are countless movies that i have heard of and saw that you have not. But go on puff your chest out, act cool on the internet, im sure all the guys on this forum that you just impressed are lining up to hang out with you. But thank you for the link thats all you had to post.
Fanaticalism 04-25-09, 03:15 AM I know I am late to the party, but I just added a JL to my system, and I must say, that I have never been able to relate to what many here claim, until today that is...
I obviously popped int KFP, and went right to the skidoosh scene... I feel like my walls were flexing, and certainly have a boat load of rattles to isolate.
Yea that KFP skidoosh scene is definitely one of the better ones IMO. Its like you can actually feel the shock wave with a good subwoofer as your watching it on the screen. Good luck isolating the rattles. At least in my case i doubt ill ever be able to get rid of all the rattles. Since were on the subject of rattles in the movie The Spirit theres a scene where he is being lowered in a casket into the ground and he wakes up and as he wakes up there is an insanely loud THUD. That has rattled more stuff in my house than any other scene. I think because theres no bass building up to it and then BAM that hits very forceful. It doesnt dig low but its a hard hitting SOB and you wouldve jumped out of your seat if i didnt just ruin it for you lol.
SbWillie 04-25-09, 03:15 PM and u want someone to chart that scene and u expect them to sit through the worst movie of the year just for that?;)

If your referring to my post. No i am not asking for a chart what so ever. I am not the slight bit curious at what frequency this scene is. I was simply stating the fact that this scene made things rattle that the skidoosh scene didnt. Since its more of an instant violent thump and very short at that. If i had to guess though id say it wasnt lower than 30hz so not interested in a waterfall. But as it being the worst movie of the year im not so sure about agreeing with that. But then again that is your personal preference which is noted and welcome. You know Samuel L. Jackson has done some pretty bad movies recently (Snake's on a plane) dont expect any of his recent work to be an award worthy production. You cant tell me you would rather watch the Jonas Brother movie or Hannah Montana over The Spirit would you lol. Dont take this post the wrong way upon rereading it, it seems as if im being defensive but im not just no other way to write it. Its all in good nature.
I was simply stating the fact that this scene made things rattle that the skidoosh scene didnt.
depending on the frequency, different things in the room will rattle
i was up in the balcony of a giant cathedral last week while the organist was practicing for a recital. the bass was thunderous up there as compared to sitting down in the middle of the cathedral
anyway, i noticed on certain notes, the light fixtures above me were rattling and on other notes, something else was rattling on the other side of the choir loft. each note resonates at a different frequency exciting different parts of the room
same thing with movies, depending on the frequency, different things will rattle. i know on the infamous pulse scene, i can't get my doors to stop rattling no matter what, even if i lean against them

Yea i know what your saying. That scene just took me by surprise i actually jumped lol. I hate my light fixtures in the room i am in they rattle like a racoon stuck in a tin trash can. I finally got my pictures to stop falling off the walls but can get the lights to stop, maybe i havent tried hard enough. I am getting ready to attempt to sell my house so im not so worried about them.
Just finished watching The Haunting in DTS WOW !!!!!
Things in my room were rattling like crazy! The room was pressurizing like crazy too! There is a lot of low low LFE material in that movie. I can see why it is a 5 star bass rating :D

MKtheater 04-25-09, 10:57 PM I just watched Monsters vs Aliens and it had some parts that shook me, should be better at home.
Hitman...lots and lots of lfe...my pair of mbm 12's got a seriouos work out with gunshots...Everytime a shot was fired, and there were tons of shots fired, I thought the bullet was hitting me in the chest full force. Probably the most intense feeling of gunfire I have ever felt in my chest...amazing!

I've PUMPED that show up forever..one of my all time faves, i thought they did a great job covering the game.
The Mr.Price scene, chapter 16, is by far one of the best scenes for volume and showing it off to your friends..that scene for me compared to a lot of the " reference " scenes that we all use. Own it, watched it probably 30 times..:)
I haven't seen it on the master list, but i compare that movie to The Hulk and a few others in that range. 5.0 Stars.
I would have to agree...not sure how low it went during the movie, but those gunshots were crazy. It is a perfect example of that hitting in the chest feeling - for this reason, outstanding reference material...my mbm's are nearfield, which makes that hitting in the chest all more dramatic...I will be buying this one. I would give it 5 stars as well just for those gunshots!
If anyone is interested, Hitman will be on HBO this Saturday 5/2 at 10pm
should be in HD and dolby digital
MKtheater 04-27-09, 11:28 AM I never watch movies on TV as the dvd and especially blurays are much better. If I see a good movie on TV and I go get the dvd or bluray and then watch it. That is just me.
mdk2007 04-27-09, 11:29 AM Hitman - Deff one of the most underated movies on the list! The hotel and sniper shot explosions are the best of any movie I have ever heard. Mr and Mrs smith has smoe good ones but between all the scenes in Hitman...it deff goes towards the top of my list. Just an overall fun movie that will impress anyone you show!

i know blu-ray is awesome but you like DVD over HDTV ?
i find that HBO HD is much better than DVD as far as picture quality and the dolby digital sound is equal
I prefer the dvd over any HD tv broadcast even the HD pay per view movies suck for audio IMO compared to the disc form whether it be dvd or BD. But i am a very critical listener and that may be why.

i guess your cable company sucks
DirecTV, highly doubt they suck. All rg-6 cable is only 6 months old and the run to my hd-dvr is only 50 feet from the satellite itself. And its output via 3ft HDMI cable directly to the receiver. PQ is great but the audio isnt the same and yes i have tested 3 different movies as far as audio goes from its TV form to DVD or bluray. Ive compared Babylon A.D. , Death Race, Hell Boy Golden Army. Its the level of the sound effects and bass that isnt up to par IMO.

Things may have changed, but I have never heard of DD being re-encoded via DirecTV (or anyone else, for that matter). There's just not enough bandwidth savings potential for them to bother. If it's a DD airing, it should be equal. Video, of course, is another matter.
Gelinas 04-27-09, 03:52 PM I have Verizon fios and was initially very disappointed with the audio dynamics// very little low end effects.
After about two months of service I was looking thru the cable box's menu and noticed that there was a dynamic range control and it was set to heavy.
I think the options were heavy, light, and off. My interpretation was that Verizon set up my box with the dynamic range being artificially limited by the box.
I noticed an improvement right away when I switched it to off. I still don't know if I would say that it's as good as DVD quality but it's much better than it was. I think Verizon is not very wise to let their boxes go out like this because it makes their service seem more inferior than it actually is (HD service--I will not engage in a rant about their sub-par customer service).
So I'd make sure to check thru the cable box's menus and make sure there is not some dynamic range filter engaged that you are unaware of.

there are certain channels (i noticed this on the disney channel with the nemo darla scene) it seems like they took the pro-logic version and disney just did a cheapo quick convert to 5.1 not using the original 5.1 source and the LFE was non-existent
but when watching the nemo scene when it was broadcast on ABC-HD in 5.1, the sound was just as good as the dvd
but that was disney channel. channels like HBO and many others have been just as good as dvd in my experience

It is very disappointing at times. Especially when I am watching movies in HD that I know have good sound tracks. Like another poster mentioned, I found that disabling DRC in my DVR's settings helped a lot, but I have found that Time Warner must compress some DD tracks (or something).
MKtheater 04-27-09, 05:24 PM Cable service is good, but the audio is just too unpredictable. My system is calibrated to reference(MV -10) HDTV is good ranging from -25 to -15. With DVD it is good from -15 db's to reference and bluray movies are all nice at reference levels(-10 db's). The mix just seems better balanced. HDTV is OK and enjoyable, but when a movie comes on I always will turn it off(one worth doing this with) and watch the disc version.

Anyone care to explain how to use Spectrum Lab? I just downloaded it and I am clueless. I want to make those graphs or charts like JBLsound4645 does. Is there any way I can get Spectrum Lab to read a DVD and analyze the frequencies of the sound?

Yes, if the provider is sending out a poor feed (like the two channel track), then it's not going to be great. Garbage in, garbage out. I'm simply saying that it seems unlikely that the DirecTV (or whoever) would re-encode the soundtrack that they get from the provider. If they are getting the proper DD soundtrack, then that is what the end user should be getting. Of course, I don't think any broadcaster is sending out HD codecs, so it's not going to compare to what you can get off Blu-ray or HD-DVD.

That may very well be our mentality, but to the general public, it would be perceived as a +, seeing as no more pesky loud commercials, or "ear bleeding" dynamics. A good majority of people see "home theater" systems as just loud noise. They are more concerned with the plot of the story, than being "engulfed" in "annoying" noise.

My Time Warner box was defaulted with DRC enabled as well. Even after disabling it some DD 5.1 signals are crappy. Garbage in, Garbage out I guess.

Well, you should watch sometimes. You might see more picture info in some movies. I just watched king kong in 1.77:1 aspect ratio(dvd,br is 2.35:1) and it looks a lot better(more picture up and bottom and nothing missing left and right), of course bass was not in same level what it is in dvd, but there was still some.
JBLsound4645 04-27-09, 08:30 PM I’m almost tempted to do a waterfall of the 1976 remake opening with John Barry’s score that has few nice low bass notes for Dolby stereo 4:2:4. I can’t be asked to play the son of the remake. Too damn long!

Just put cord your receiver sub out to comp audio in, or comp audio out to comp audio in and make sure audio/fft setting are correct(check first page), its important to check that input sample rate divisor is set to 1(or you will get misleading charts, okei i admit it now, some older of mine are:o). Also you my need minijacks to connect cord in your comp.

Are you serious? DirecTV is way ahead of digital cable as far as supplying high def programing. Thats what i meant by DirecTV doesnt suck. Now the audio on any HD programing no matter what the source (ive heard fios, digital cable, satellite)IMO isnt up to par with its DVD or Blu-ray counter part. I just wouldnt recommend someone who wants to hear the best quality sound from a movie to watch it on TV programing. You knew what i meant no contradiction what so ever so dont be a wanker.

do us all a favor and don't !
JBLsound4645 04-28-09, 12:44 AM Anyone care to explain how to use Spectrum Lab? I just downloaded it and I am clueless. I want to make those graphs or charts like JBLsound4645 does. Is there any way I can get Spectrum Lab to read a DVD and analyze the frequencies of the sound?
Use the AVR RCA phone outputs one at time. Use phone to RCA lead patched into AVR and computer and set AVR to 0db it’s that simple.
I’ve got some King Kong 1976 ones coming soon :p:p I just use the sub bass output from the AVR for this one, unless it’s King Kong 2005 which I couldn’t care much about. Even the original has good bass maybe a bit bright but it sure beats the plasma LCD TV speakers.

You knew what i meant no contradiction what so ever so dont be a wanker.
no, i didn't know what you meant, this is an audio forum. i assumed you were talking the audio since that's what we were discussing here, duh
don't assume that because the audio sucks from your particular provider that it sucks for everyone
maybe you should call directv customer service and ask them why the sound sucks
MKtheater 04-28-09, 10:36 AM So it seems many movies that are coming out have nice clean and loud bass, BUT where are big bass movies. The Last movie I watched before ripping my theater apart was The Spirit and it had some decent bass. I am still waiting for the movie that has Dark night and Kung fu panda quality and WOTW quantity. The big blockbuster movies are starting to roll out so maybe there is some hope this summer and fall. BTW, when is LOTR coming to blu. That will be an awesome experience.

Unless you disconnect each speaker leaving only one to play with laptop near by to speaker say left then disconnect left and wire up centre. LOL It won’t look too good but you can waste your time in the experiment if you have nothing else to do?
Anyone have any graphs/waterfalls for the depth charged scene during U-571?

I liked the first gunshot when Eva Mendes comes out of the water in Spirit. I don't know how much bass was there but it was loud and sounded good, or maybe it was just Eva...
SbWillie 04-28-09, 08:47 PM LOTR release date is still pending..there I go getting off topic now.

Alright you win guy. But its the same thing as you telling me the RADIO sounds as good as a CD.
MK, The spirit did have some good bass what did you think of that nice mid bass BOOM when he was being lowered into the coffin. That scared the crap out of me lol. But im with you I have about exhausted all my options on bass heavy movies. I thought quantum of solace or the newer punisher warzone wouldve been great for bass but they were mediocre in my book. We need the guys who mixed Cloverfield to get a little more business.
But its the same thing as you telling me the RADIO sounds as good as a CD.
no it's not the same. radio is analog and CD is digital
your provider must be compressing the dolby digital signal to save on bandwidth. that's too bad for YOU but not EVERYONE :)
Helmutz88 04-29-09, 12:53 AM I love my movies as all you do, i would have lost money if i bet on this. Cloverfield was on HD Sat tonight, i watched the first entry scene roughly during the party, db'd it.
Gave it 30 minutes worth. Then i chucked in my Blu Ray. No BS, it was exactly the same db scene for scene. I dunno, i would have bet the Blu Ray with plus db to boot.
counsil 04-29-09, 01:20 AM I just ordered some movies (The Incredible Hulk, The Haunting, Flight of the Phoenix, Pulse, and Titan A.E.) from Amazon that I haven't seen yet. From what I've read, I have some good bass scenes coming my way. I'll keep you guys posted on my thoughts.
Well OTK you may be right it might just suck for me. But since im CHEAP and dont pay for the premium movie channels and just rent them all via netflix i dont have to worry too much. But i have bought the pay per-views they offer and my opinion stands the same. But i know you were just letting people know about a movie coming on and we started a debacle. The only shows i watch on my satellite any more honestly are LOST and HOUSE thats it lol atleast theyre pic is HD. Ok and occasionally some cartoons when my daughter's downstairs with me.. as if i need to blame her to watch cartoons lol.

No, I am trading with someone has it and doesn't care about it being DTS or DD. The DTS version is hard to find nowadays.

not only is the bass awesome but the DTS 6.1 discrete surround effects are pretty cool also
MKtheater 04-29-09, 02:23 PM There is more to the soundtrack than just how loud the bass is. I am sure the HDTV movie was just as loud, I am just talking the quality of the movie. I use just bluray for demos now. The only DVD's I use are LOTR and WOTW. WOTW's picture is horrible and LOTR picture is good for DVD but still not even close to blu. I use a 130 inch screen so blu makes a huge difference. The sound just seems smoother and more visceral. I watch all movies at reference levels.
MKtheater 04-29-09, 02:25 PM The Haunting is an awesome bass movie, I used it many times for demos. Now I just use The Dark Night, Transformers, The Incredible Hulk, and the THX amazing life. All on bluray.
tbass2k 04-29-09, 05:18 PM Counsil, make sure you check out Live Free or Die Hard and Band of Brothers; these movies have ridiculous bass and dynamic range. The previously mentioned movies along with The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man are my current go-to demo discs.
Helmutz88 04-29-09, 05:40 PM :) let's hope a year from now we'll be saying how killer the new Terminator and Transformer's BD is killing our HT's..the trailer's for both look sick...
In my prev post about the sat/bd on Cloverfield last night, the volume honestly was identical..the bluray was of course picture perfect, and mine is on a 114"..it just freaked me out that it played that loud, that's all.

bgillyjcu 04-29-09, 08:27 PM Serenity on Blu-Ray with the DTS-MA track is very very impressive. I've seen and heard it on DVD, but man this was a step up.
Picture quality was very very good, and the sound track was POWERFUL to say the least. The PB-13 had a hell of a workout. So much to the point that it actually wiggled my HDMI wire loose!!!

My last 2 movies from an lfe standpoint have been amazing...serenity, excellent and hitman, excellent as well. I watched it again and I swear I was in the craft when it shook.
Saw Spirit...did not like and fell asleep...I guess the lfe didn't go that low cause I never woke up after watching the first 30 minutes...For me, I just do not like that cartoonish look to movies...I got through sin city but still just did not like that animated/computerized look...as well as 300...another one I did not like...its just me.
I wish 300 was done realisticlly, both with story and screen presentation...would have and could have been one hell of a movie, but I am sure more people loved that movie then disliked it.
Haven't seen 300 or Sin city with my subs. May have to revisit those movies to see how they do with the subs...I just got to get thru the look of the movie.

I just watched Sin City on Blu Ray last night. It had nice hard hitting bass, a great picture, and excellent surround intergration.
However, there was not a single bass hit in the whole movie that got my windows rattling (which, in our house is the refrence for good bass)

Was it the 2005 version or the newly released ? The new release is supposed hit really hard...i haven't gotten my hands on it yet...
I'd buy more BD movies but $30-35 a pop is quite a bit....hopefully prices will be reasonable soon.
Gelinas 05-01-09, 07:51 AM Was it the 2005 version or the newly released ? The new release is supposed hit really hard...i haven't gotten my hands on it yet...
It was the newly relesed Blu-Ray version. As far as I know it has only been available on DVD up until 4/21.
Helmutz88 05-01-09, 09:14 AM I was hoping it thumped, the new review's said it was wicked..oh well..
Has anyone had a chance to watch Notorious yet ?
Cloverfield is awesome  It is currently my favorite movie to hear bass, along with Kung Fu Panda. I have the blu-ray.
I just watched the beginning of Cloverfield BD and it was insane. The scene where the alien first emerges, during the party, was the best bass I've ever heard and felt. When they were in the grocery store, the tight bass shook my floor.
If you have never seen this movie, and a bass addict, you should be a shamed. It's also great demo material.
Yea im also wondering about notorious and X-men trilogy (havnet seen any of them on my new system). Ralph usually does pretty good reviews but im not sure what hes using for bass. So sometimes his LFE ratings are off IMO.

Cloverfield was my very first "big bass" movie i watched. I doubt anything will trump it. But thats because sometimes its hard to duplicate that feeling of such a great first impression. But that damn movie got me addicted lol.
MKtheater 05-01-09, 11:14 AM The reviewer here uses a SVS PB13-Ultra for his LFE.
Well hes got a good sub he must just be easily amused then lol. I see some LFE floppers get decent scores from him IMO. Other than that love the reviews. If i remeber correct Body Of Lies and Quantum of Solace got good LFE scores which both flopped IMO. Also Blu-ray.com reviewer is easily amused in the LFE dept. as well. We need a new bass-head reviewer for LFE content only lol.
Gelinas 05-01-09, 11:20 AM I like the reviews Ralph does. I like the fact that he has the same sub as me.
And to be clear, I thought Sin City had good bass, it just wasen't WOTW.
It did not rattle my windows, but my fiancee did go out of the way to tell me that it was making the floor shake in the floor above. The funny thing was that she was not even on the floor so the bed must have been shaking as well.
I only use LFE on my set up. Does that count?

LOL yea as much as i like bass i think i could get away with several large subs and just a center channel. Why waste money on surround and mains :D.
I never use to rewatch movies that often until i built my sub. Now my wife is constantly saying didnt you already see that movie blah blah blah.
MKtheater 05-01-09, 12:40 PM I think the reviews are based on the acurracy and quality of bass more than SPL. As much as I love Cloverfield and WOTW watching a scene from the Dark Night is better to me. Not as powerful but not far behind and the quality is awesome, not to mention the movie was great. The overall experience was awesome, just like LOTR trilogy.

Thats one thing im waiting to come to blu-ray but wont hold my breathe for is the LOTR trilogy. I can relate to your statement on the reviews, take black hawk down IMO the bass is sloppy but very loud. And WOTW i think they just threw something together like an old hangover remedy and didnt care about the SQ. Cloverfields bass wasnt as nasty IMO it fit very well.

My wife says the same thing. They just don't understand, even if they do, it's not the same.
They will never understand, just like she never understood why i need a 600rwhp streetable mustang. Its a man thing :D.
Just re-watched max payne. Love Natasha (the chick who gets cut up, and new bond girl) also the slow-mo scenes. The bass gets pretty intense during them i got a few foot stomps on the ceiling from the wife. But i never realized how viscous those gun shots were. If you had a couple really nice MBM's that would be the movie to show it off with. But overall its rated quite well on here at 4.

The car thing she kinda understood. I had a 415awhp galant vr4. 12.0@116mph. She actually supported it. lol
Natasha looks better in Max Payne tho. The movie has great shoot them up bass.
Josette 05-01-09, 06:10 PM You guys should check out the Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation "Special Edition" DVD. The DTS track has ludicrous amounts of low bass, my A2-300 sounded like it was getting airborne a few times :D

Plenty of LFE.1 track as well as LCRS as I was watching this two days ago.

slumdog millionare...a suprising amont of bass...helicopter in the beginning and much of the music score is low...and a pretty good flick.

JBLsound4645 05-02-09, 07:05 PM I thought the Valkyrie trailer was awesome in terms of six-track Dolby mix damn when the LFE.1 kicked in with the explosion it was a huge almighty shuddering violent jolt that pinned me back for a few seconds.
Trailer was on Quantum of Solace and that film is just so bad its not even worthy of waterfalls. I must have viewed the Valkyrie trailer at least 20 or 30 times, now then over hyped Bond load of rubbish wasn’t worth buying.
Well at least I 30 viewings of Valkyrie in six-track Dolby stereo, now then!:p

JBLsound4645 05-02-09, 07:16 PM THe one that came out the 30th probably equals or beats the teaser...DEVASTATOR looked sick!!one sick DESERTSUCKER!:D
U forgot JBL..I have the 1 year old WARREN 100% THX theater! :D NOT 56K but still sweet!
Doesn’t have to be 56KW even the CIC/UCI High Wycombe JBL/THX was less yet perfectly designed from top to bottom. I don’t have much information on that site from the past, but I know who to ask for that information.
But in the case of EMPIRE 13KW would have still packed a punch as it was put together by the same Harman team that did the first THX cinema in the UK CIC/UCI Wycombe 6. But 56KW tastes better with Transformers front and centre with the sub bass array hidden but I was starring right at it as I knew where it was.
Yet you couldn’t tell when its active or inactive the marriage between stage and subs was seamlessly perfect.
Must be the perfect alignment of the dbx4800 loudspeaker crossover management system, hmm what crossover setting are they using?:D
You wouldn’t happen to have any pictures of this Warren THX cinema by any chance?
I agree with you JBL quantum of solace was a flopper in the LFE department. But it did offer a chase scene in almost every imaginable way except of course an almighty scooter chase scene lol.
Kevin12586 05-02-09, 11:27 PM I was hoping it thumped, the new review's said it was wicked..oh well..
Has anyone had a chance to watch Notorious yet ?
Yea im also wondering about notorious and X-men trilogy (havnet seen any of them on my new system). Ralph usually does pretty good reviews but im not sure what hes using for bass. So sometimes his LFE ratings are off IMO.
I watched Notorious on BD last weekend and it is a very good movie. If you are a fan of Biggie, you won't be disappointed. If you are looking for deep LFE though, this is not the movie for you. The only time there is much bass at all is when the music comes on. I highly recommend the movie though.
LOTR on BD is expected around the end of the year, but unfortunately it will be the theatrical version. We will have to wait for the extended one. :(
See my link in my signature if you want a source.
JBLsound4645 05-03-09, 12:20 AM ^^^
Extended version LOTR no thanks, I prefer the cinema version and even that was too long! What are they making Lawrence frigging Arabia!:D
That is one film or trilogy I haven’t even bothered looking at in the independent frequency waterfalls yet.
There are a few moments I’d like to look at but it’s a too damn long and tiresome film. I’m Bored with the rings.
I agree with you JBL quantum of solace was a flopper in the LFE department. But it did offer a chase scene in almost every imaginable way except of course an almighty scooter chase scene lol.
Like the opening it had a few LCR hard hitting recoil on the automatic machinegun fire, with a few accompanied now and then LFE.1 supporting it.
It was movie of 15 minutes a load of Bond rubbish. God I miss Pierce Brosnan.
You miss pierce?? Ahh man i cant agree with you there. Look at pierce brosnan theres nothing bad a$$ about the guy other than he can grow more body hair than probably any of us around here lol. And bond is suppose to be a bad a$$ you know what. I dont think its daniel craig that made quantum of solace a flopper sine IMO casino royal was nice. But maybe i liked it more since it revolved around a poker game :D. Anyways if you want to talk about people who made a movie flop what about the guy who played the new Punisher? The scene where he fixed his broken nose in the car did it for me. Hopefully thats the last movie i see him in hes better in all those TV shows not on the big screen.

Well im more of a Tupac fan but i liked biggie. Where is tupac's movie im a bit disappointed. I still listen to some of both their music.
Well then i will definitly wait until the end of the year to re-watch LOTR on BD. Like JBL said the trilogy is insanely long so im not sure i can watch it more than once in a few months period of time. And thankyou for the link!
Fanaticalism 05-03-09, 08:00 PM Just finished watching "Smoking Aces" on HD-DVD (First time with the new sub), and there were some scenes torwards the end there that had some serious pressurization going on. I could feel my ears getting stuffy.
OK i got a movie its not a big bass movie and couldnt even rank on here but it had some of the best SQ on lfe i have heard in a while. Dont laugh fellas but its Australia. With the thunder and few bombing scenes i was very impressed at how clean and realistic the sound was. I paused the movie at a point when the thunder was going on because i was confused and never heard thunder sound so good in a movie. Anyways i figured id bring it up since im sure alot of you are waiting for the wife to go out of town to pop this flick in and see Mr. Jackman pour soapy water all over himself lol. Thats bad and a little distrubing but humorous none the less.
Australia...uuughh. I watched in the family room rather then the theater room. I guess I should of watched it in the other room...but, man, I really did not like that movie.
LOL i didnt say it was good movie. I am saing the SQ is great. Sure theres lots of thunder in movies but nothing that sounds that good and uses the LFE to make it more realistic. You dont have to check it out but it was worth mentioning since the sound was nice.
MKtheater 05-04-09, 01:33 PM If I remember correctly I thought The Day After Tomorrow had good weather effects.
MIkeDuke 05-04-09, 01:55 PM If I remember correctly I thought The Day After Tomorrow had good weather effects.
I agree. The tornado, flood, helicopter crash and city freezing were all pretty good scenes.
lfe man 05-04-09, 02:14 PM Open range also have maybe one of realistic thunder storm scenes ever. New world had one good too.
Helmutz88 05-04-09, 04:50 PM Anyone watched Sunshine yet..maybe a couple of year's old. Not monster crazy bass, but many scenes with smooth responses. Good movie over all, worth a watch at a loud volume. Virtually ever Sun scene hit nicely. I'd score it a good solid 4.0..
The Day After Tomorrow, just watched it again the other night...since i live in a very cold place during the winter..that movie never dies up here :)..whole movie sounded terrific.

Good movie over all, worth a watch at a loud volume. Virtually ever Sun scene hit nicely. I'd score it a good solid 4.0...I like this one, too. Probably not demonstration bass that produces a jaw dropping waterfall, but a well mixed sound track that is effective without calling excessive attention to itself. I'd rate it a little higher than it is here, agreeing that it's a solid 4.0.
lefthandluke 05-04-09, 09:04 PM slumdog millionare...a suprising amont of bass...helicopter in the beginning and much of the music score is low...and a pretty good flick.
excellent call...
the bass in this movie caught me off-guard...
yes I believe I mentioned this before. Slumdog had a ton of surprising bass. I thought my wife was going to scream.

I have the trailer on the QOS disc along with the tom Cruise one and The day the Earth Stood still all in six-track Dolby stereo. I know there is thunder like sound in the trailer or musical like thunder clash. Looks like an interesting flick might buy it soon.

Yeah brought it last year and did some waterfalls thou a bit primitive by today’s standards as I’ve upped the stakes on the technique a bit. Not sure where I posted it?
I know of an easy place to look of it, back in jiffy.

Last Sunday was the cast and crew screening of ‘Sunshine’ at the Empire Leicester Square. The Empire is probably the best cinema in all of the UK- the screen is 18.26x 8.14m (approx 60×26 feet), it holds 1330 people and, with a 56000 Watt THX certified sound system, the sound is out of this world. It was the absolute *perfect* place to see ‘Sunshine’.
Anyway how about some (Sunshine 2007) just finished going though the film very fast looking for some good low, low moments and there’s plenty of them. While typing this up and doing the screen captures in the pc as I had to remove the DVD from the main DVD player for capturing and then placed the film back in the main DVD player, went to chapter 20 as I like the mellowness of the surrounds on the end credits.
Edited the screen captures and the graphs show some low below 30Hz that’s good enough.
Here is a few frequency waterfall graphs of Sunshine (2007) chapter 11 and chapters 16 to 17. The music by John Murphy is very emotional and moving within Capa space suit I could hear his heart beating in sheer desperation to free the other part of the module to complete their mission.
Chapter 18 the final last moments

Great movie, and Great bass, I'd give it a 4.5 for Bass.
I just think it hasn't been seen enough by our bassheads here!
Im surprised but i hadn't even heard of Sunshine until you guys mentioned it on here. Maybe its my fault for skipping previews and not going to the theater anymore. How old is this movie cant be too old right?
I watched Mr and Mrs Smith on the computer last night and was taken by surprise on how much low end stuff there was......I see that movie was rated pretty highly on this thread.
I may have to pick this one up on BD. Anyone else have this?
mdk2007 05-05-09, 07:24 PM Mr and Mrs. smith has some of the best explosions. period. that a hitman are my favorite. all around great movie!

Anyone see Miracle at St. Anna? It looks like it might have a few scenes that could have some bass. Im going to watch it later on i guess ill let you guys know if its anything worth trying.
MKtheater 05-06-09, 02:31 PM I just watched Wolverine at the theater and the Transformers 2 preview made my pants flap alot which almost never happens at the theater. It was suprising.

I hope so. There is a waterfall floating around here somewhere that looked promising. For Transformers I got the Metal Decepticon case 2 disk set. It sounds very good. My room still shakes on certain points. I just hope the DVD translates into some great bass.
MKtheater 05-06-09, 04:32 PM I use transformers as demo material, love the 20-50 hz bass in it. Wolverine had some good bass. I liked the movie as I liked all the X-men movies.
Just watched Slumdog and the bass was down right incredible at times :D

They should have the capability of playing louder, it just depends on who sets it up. The THX theater I went to for Wolverine finally had it turned up and it was awesome. To get the same midbass punch I needed dual 18 inch folded horn subs at home. It makes a huge difference.
WAR...another one with good bass throughout...gunshots hit ya hard in the chest!
SbWillie 05-07-09, 08:34 PM The theater I went to was full THX as well.
WHich was where? I always try to sit dead center between the screen and the rear surround so I basically lose a good bit of the bass experience but the surround experience is slightly more important than the bass IMO when it comes to going to a commercial theater....some movies still KICK from the `dead zone' seats! :)
+1 on Star Wars Clone Wars having sick bass. I was really impressed with the LFE in this movie. The THX demo in the begining is the only reason i ever picked it up but i do not regret it at all. I myself am surpirsed its not on the list a solid 4 to 4.5 for SQ , output, and extension. Its so amzing how a good sub can make a movie seem so realistic. It makes my heart hurt for those who dont have one lol.
Also finally finished Miracle at St Anna. Highly reccommend the flick but not for LFE, its just a plain good movie IMO. Its got some parts but couldnt hold a candle to anything on the list.
And a request from anyone who can honor it. I would like to see waterfall for the opening car crash scene in Shoot em Up. Its not really low i dont think but its super loud im just wondering what freq it is. Anywho its one of my favorite LFE scenes dont know why but i just like it.

Up here in Wichita, Ks we have 2 real nice warrens with THX theaters that are awesome. I always sit 3/4 of the way up and smack dab in the middle of the screen to get the best of both worlds(always 30-45 min early so i get my seats lol). SB where in OK are you by tulsa, OKC, or neither?
SbWillie 05-08-09, 08:22 AM OK, but the Wichita Warrens ARE not 100% THX certified (all screens)in WIchita(ask Bill Warren or check the site). THe new one in OKC/Moore is the only one (and still the ONLY multiplex in the US) that has ALL THX cert screens.
Love the fact that I can be in any theater there and it's the same as the Grand..
SORRY Guys even I get off topic!LOL!
MKtheater 05-08-09, 09:52 AM My bad, My cinema only has 2 THX theaters, I was just saying that I saw it in a THX theater which are usually calibrated correctly.
jmcnally 05-08-09, 03:35 PM My bad, My cinema only has 2 THX theaters, I was just saying that I saw it in a THX theater which are usually calibrated correctly.
I'd be happy to find ANY THX screens in my area (Brooklyn, NY.)
I looked at the theater directory on the THX Web site, then called a few on the phone to make sure their THX was on. I struck out three times in this regard and gave up.
Is there a surefire way to find a THX-certified cinema?
Scottfox 05-08-09, 06:45 PM What pisses me off is that I live just north of Dallas, yet the Oklahoma THX theaters are still the closest ones to me
How do we encourage THX to spread to other areas that it's not. write to the local theaters & complain? There are some large local Cinemark theaters here, but none have THX setups, and in my opinion, are lacking in subwoofage. We are going as a group of 15 or more guys to see Star Trek next week at an IMAX theater in Dallas. I hope it's got a decent sound system!

NW OKC metro area..they are in the planning stages for a north OKC Warren with FOUR Grande theaters....would have to compete with the IMAX Theater being built....too fun!:D

Thanks for the waterfalls. I was not surprised by the findings. Its got some wicked lows that if your sub can handle it will shake everything up. Im not a huge fan of the actual movie itself but the audio is excellent so i could handle this little star wars mistake.
Fears4Ears 05-11-09, 08:00 PM Just saw Star Trek last night at the newest theater in town. During 2 explosions I noticed the bass was hitting so hard that it sounded like the left WALL was distorting! Just an advance warning for anybody looking forward to the DVD.
I also saw a preview for the upcoming "Fame" that hit some nice lows. Check it out at www.generationfame.com
or check out the Zip I made of it. I'd really be curious what the lows were on that clip.
I watched some of Benjiman Buttons and it had some very low couch shaking bass.

+1. Fantastic movie. The interrogation scene is the most I've ever seen. Maybe a cross between Jack Bauer and Jason Bourne.
MKtheater 05-13-09, 12:16 PM I loved Taken. There were a couple of scenes that blew my hair back which means I was over 120 db's. My wife just looked at me and smiled. Underworld 3 also had some nice bass scenes as well. I can't resist hot chicks in tight black outfits so I bought the trilogy.

Like when Nero uses the weapon to destroy Vulcan or Spock’s narrative when explaining to Kirk and the planet being engulfed into large almighty black hole, sounded wicked at the EMPIRE Leicester Square last Thursday May 7th via the JBL 56KW THX sound system, out of this world!
I liked STAR TREK so much I saw it twice and I had the SPL db metre with me. Yummy my new reference benchmark DVD for the year!
And not one hint of distraction, buzzing/rattling of any kind just a pure deep almightily low KABOOM!
I’m looking forward to the DVD later in the year for individual frequency waterfalls.
But in the meantime, how about King Kong 1976 waterfalls! :D

I noted the best, deepest bass was around that part as well. Especially when Spock is explaining what happened during the mind-meld. A deep bass sweep right there. Loved the punchy bass when the starships would go to warp speed too. Can't wait to hear this one at home.

Helmutz88 05-15-09, 11:42 AM Underworld 3, did anyone have any problem's with the center channel on this movie ?
When i watched it, dolby true, all of the sound was excellent except the voicing.
Even at a loud volume sometimes i found myself asking, wtf did they just say...anyone else exp this ?
JBLsound4645 05-15-09, 11:51 AM Don't be a tease. What did it read? :)
Almost, almost 120dbc it was dark scene when Vulcan collapsed into black hole, I had very little light to see the SPL db metre. The screen was mostly made up of dark shadowing, its possible I might have missed the reading by a few milliseconds as I wasn’t expecting.
It radiated out very wide as we most defiantly felt. :p

The punch was close to, and I’m thinking Iron Man, why because it seemed like sonic boom as he punches though the sound barrier?
OvalNut 05-17-09, 12:48 AM OK, I have another waterfall request:
I just watched the movie Taken, and in the scene of the auction when he sees his daughter's face, the BASS hit at that moment made the ductwork above my ceiling shake and compressed the whole room.
Might i please ask someone to chart a waterfall of that hit?
Much thanks in advance,

jedi.night 05-17-09, 08:30 AM Underworld 3, did anyone have any problem's with the center channel on this movie ?
When i watched it, dolby true, all of the sound was excellent except the voicing.
Even at a loud volume sometimes i found myself asking, wtf did they just say...anyone else exp this ?
Just watched it last night. And I agree completely.
I had to turn up volume much louder than normal because it seemed the center channel dialogue was recorded in mouse mode....muted almost.
Other wise, the Sound and Bass were terrific. 4.5 star bass movie, 1.0 voice an dialogue!
The movie was just OK. not bad, not anything special either.

:eek:someone posted a while back that it had next to NO bass...must've been a Cruise hater.:p
Fanaticalism 05-17-09, 09:40 PM Rise of the Lycans was a huge dissappointment.
jasonvr 05-17-09, 09:52 PM Has anyone done a waterfall capture on scenes from Benjamin Button? There are two scenes right in a row that felt like they were moving my house. They are both about 50 minutes in. The first is the horn on the boat. Just after it is a clap of thunder. Freaked me out when my eD A5-350 started thumping. Just wasn't expecting it.

That was me... There isn't much bass in the movie, 2 scenes, maybe 3 if you count the explosion near the middle of the movie. Don't remember the explosion being that good.

counsil 05-17-09, 11:09 PM I just finished watching Titan AE. It was actually a really good movie. Even the kids liked it. Had I have known Joss Whedon wrote it, I would have watched it a long time ago. Anyway, I don't believe I have ever watched a movie with so much bass throughout. I will be watching this again soon.
I watched Incredible Hulk a couple days ago for the first time as well. The pulse cannon scene was awesome. It's got to contain some really low stuff. One of my Ultras started to chuff a little bit at -10 from reference. At reference, this scene is really something else.
Now I've got The Haunting and Pulse left to watch.
Titan AE hurt my old PW2200.:( A new driver had to be installed.
I swore I'd never watch that movie again.
But now that I've upgraded, maybe I'll see how the Ultra fairs.;)

Very strong 13hz in that scene :p

Yeah, Best Buy had Hulk-blu-ray on sale for 15.99 last weekend.
I quickly bought it and went straight to the scene starting with hulk busting out of that elevated glass hallway on the college campus.
The scene that follows has great action, surround, and lfe.
I knew sound cannons had some low stuff because at one point I could not hear the bass but it was making my windows rattle pretty loud.
I have a very open listening area (it opens up to basically the whole upstairs and basement) so I don't always get my room truly pressurized so I can feel the subsonics.
Also, in The Hulk, towards the end right after Ed Norton fall from the Heli. The fight scene in the streets has some good stomping bass.
MKtheater 05-18-09, 02:32 PM Also the Helicopter crash.
Is anybody else frustrated by Spectrum Labs program? I've tried about 4 separate times to get it to work and I just cannot get an input into it. Nothing. I've tried the help files more than once and spent a few hours playing with settings. Tried both internal and external soundcards and I know I'm getting a signal into the pc with both, but SL shows nothing....ever. I usually can figure out anything.:o
Mrkazador 05-18-09, 09:36 PM Try changing the default recording device in Windows.
lfe man 05-18-09, 11:28 PM Push the default settings button in sl under color palette, if that works?? Try change different audio input device in options>audio settings>audio input device.
Try changing the default recording device in Windows.
I'm pretty sure that I tried this already. Perhaps not. I'll give it a shot.

I've tried all of this multiple times. I'm used to switching out my SC settings due to using REW, Samplitude and other programs all the time. Spectrum Labs is the only one that I cannot seem to get running right.
The audio track message always says "waiting audio messages"

Safeezy 05-20-09, 12:18 PM +1. Nicely done.
Sorry if this has been asked before, but I don't exactly have the time to go through the 108 pages of this thread.
Question is, what are some movies that have scenes with great midbass punch/attack?

No, not at all it worked straight away on my computer. The only thing I had to improve on was the settings for the graphs as I was at lower setting which resulted in gustily pixel image.
Are you sue the audio leads are okay no break in the lead or dodgy phone jack plugs?

Watched Valkyrie last night (BR) and was pleasantly surprised at the LFE. Lots of varied hz stuff... I'm having Audyssey issues that cause my Ultra to freak out on infrasonic material, but clearly this movie has some bass chops!

VERY good MOVIE IMHO! It was a little overly stylized/polished looking for a war movie but it still was a solid picture!
Would've been worth the price of admission but oh well...thx to NF I got the BR for `free'! :D
Safeezy 05-21-09, 03:59 PM I also watched Valkyrie the other night. Right after the scene with the spinning wheel had some significant LFE. Definitley caught me off guard.

Wow it’s out already? Bugger I think it’s out on region 2 DVD next month, buy which time I’d have the LCD video projector up and temporarily running on bed sheet until I can afford a perforated screen. Bed sheet will work if you can hold it up in front of you and still make out moving object behind it. If light can get thou so can sound! If you poured water on it, it will pass thou now then.

Of course it’s going to be over-polished. its got Tom Flipping “I feel the need for! Show me the money!” Cruise in it.
That smile of his, you could replace man-on-the-moon with Tom Cruise and no would notice the difference.:D

Now that’s spoiler. :D I’d be on high alert next month I’ll watch out for that moment. Well there is.
Helmutz88 05-21-09, 06:53 PM Valkyrie hit pretty nice within the first 30 minutes..some nice underlying bass tones as well..worth a watch for sure...Notorious was an excellent movie as well, not much bass, worth a watch...
Save your money on " My Name Is Bruce "...i thought it would be some what funny at least, some demon's or witches...brutal waste of a rental.

I was referring to the actual presentation NOT Cruise...picture seemed a little too colorful and bright for a war pic.
lfe man 05-22-09, 09:14 PM Watched transporter 3 at last and i don't get the fuzz that bass was recorded hot in there. Well at least scandinavian dts dvd seemed weak, i actually boosted sub level 10db at second time... now it rocked good.:D

I just watched this movie on DVD and I have to say that I had absolutely no problems with vocals being too quiet.
The bass was KICK ASS! There was one scene close to the end where you hear a Lycan galloping with the herd, my couch leapt off the floor with each gallop. I had to watch the scene three times.
I would love to see a waterfall of this whole sequence. PLEASE!

I also noticed the dialogue was a little low on my BD. Maybe 1 or 2 levels lower than the action, listening at my normal level.

A very well mixed track, but ULF's are non-existant, with decent mid-bass through out.

u wouldnt consider these scenes below 40hz
the grasshopper horn alarm
the food spilling from leaf
the gustof wind while floating on dandelion
the flaming wall of death
the spider walking through city
I dont have a way to verify it

Thanks for the welcome! Oops! Guess I should do some research before posting next time! Right now, I have dual MFW-15s. Had many others, including SVS, Velodyne, Sunfire, Hsu, to name a few. How about you? Also, what are some of your favorite BASS movies?

The good Dr. that started the thread has a pretty killer list, click on his signature.
I run two Elemental Design A5-350's along with a Sunfire amp and Def Tech 2000's..sounds pretty deadly.
My fave bass bumper's, not in any order- Incredible Hulk, Hitman, Serentiy, Sunshine, Cloverfield, Dark Knight, Live Free Die Hard, I Robot, Day After Tomorrow, 3 chapters of War of the Worlds :), budz, i could go on..just some that i own....when you get some time, go through this thread, i'm sure you'll find many movies that you wouldn't normally rent or buy.
