THE HOST
Excellent Deep Bass throughout the movie. In all of the monster scenes.
Some of the Best Bass in a movie since Master and Commander and War of the Worlds.
I watched the Blu-Ray version but I imagine the Regular DVD version would be excellent to.

knghtwhosaysni 07-26-07, 01:09 AM For some reason, imdb has it as "Gwoemul" which is probably the Korean title phoneticized in English. But just about anywhere you go to look for it, it will probably be called "The Host."

spacesaverHT 07-26-07, 01:03 PM Great list on BASS movies/scenes.( found this at the right time)
Is there any other thread or link which list movies/scenes to test the speakers ?
I thought I would use that to audition the speakers if the list already exists...
-- More dialogue oriented scenes ( for center channel clarity)
-- Music and action combined scenes ( to test L and R)
-- enveloping surround scenes ( to test surround speakers)..
This may not belong to this thread, but couldn't find a better place to ask this question.

DrPainMD 07-26-07, 07:45 PM Sorry for going off topic... but....I'm playing "Shrek The Third" on XBox360 and its got some chest pounding bass!
jmcomp124 07-26-07, 11:28 PM I agree about "The Host". However, posts without timestamps/chapter info are almost meaningless (why bother).
So here it is,
Check out 1:42:50, has some good subsonics. I could see the Passive Radiators (4 18" ers :D :D trying to keep up) get a good workout (meaning good subsonic LFE). I am guessing good 16Hz material here. There are 2 additional active 18" drivers doing the real job :).
Yes, throughout the movie there is good bass.
There is one scene worth noting (sorry don't have the time stamp, so may not be worth mentioning) where I could hear the monster overhead. It was like it was walking up in the 2nd floor. I could actually feel it moving over the ceiling when it comes looking for it's guest being host (potential prey :)).
That scene confirmed that my surrounds were well integrated to the subs :D
DrPainMD 07-27-07, 12:15 AM However, posts without timestamps/chapter info are almost meaningless (why bother).
yup, I've been saying that all along. PLEASE POST TIMESTAMPS!
Thanks for this excellent service.
I started with Master and Commander. I have listened to Chapter 4 a number of times, and it shakes the room, bringing a smile every time from me and from those I've shared the scene with.
I have checked out timestamped scenes from some of the other movies, like Daredevil, U-571, Apocalypto and don't get nearly the quality of bass as Master and Commander Chapter 4? Is this a setting issue I should explore, or is the Master and Commander Chapter 4 just that awesome?
Thanks again for this great service! :)

Master and C is a great sub movie.. U-571 should be on par with that, Daredevil felt good to me, havnt seen Apoc.
What sub do you have?
btw , you can send $ via paypal for the service ;)
The sub is a Truaudio CS-12": 200 watt, 30 - 150 Hz (-+3dB), 113 db SPL @ 1 meter, connected via LFE
The other 5 speakers are Truaudio REV-LCR.1: 8" woofer, dual 2" mid, 1" tweeter, 39-20k Hz, 92 dB Sensitivity
Powered by a Onkyo 805 that has been Audyssey calibrated.
It's odd that Master and Commander is so incredible, and I barely notice the bass with the others.
Give me paypal details and I'll gladly contribute :)

Ouch! You got me. :p (However I did mention it was at the end of the last chapter.) To be honest with you, I like to watch movies with out having to take notes for a review. However, if I owned my DVD's I would be happy to spend some time going back through the film providing more details, but since I rent them I's difficult to find that time before they are due. A brief synopsis of movies with deep bass impact would be fine for me, but I also realise there are members that want more info in terms of what to expect before they order from the menu. ;)
Ian :D

OC/ingmaddog 08-02-07, 06:50 PM I saw that we have V for Vendetta listed but no timestamps, so I though I would contribute :)
Chapter 3- Blowing up of the Old Bailey (0:10:20)
I didn't know what the timestamp signifies, the EXACT moment of the bass, or the time around which it occurs. I put mine about 20 sec earlier, when the music starts up.
But the actual blowing up (which is awesome), is at 0:10:40.
I love this movie...:D which IMO, is MUCH better than the Matrix films.
EDIT: Here's another:
Chapter 15- V's Scream (1:00:07)

squidboy 08-03-07, 11:33 AM I know it has already been mentioned, but just wanted to give this one another thumbs up. Hot Fuzz has to have the most bass of any movie I've seen in a LONG time. It's probably overkill, but it's great.
The movie is sort of a spoof of action movies, and takes everything to an extreme level, including the bass. There were low "whoosh" sounds every time anyone opened a door, during scene changes, etc.
There were a few explosions and such, which would be good for the list here, but anyone who enjoys bass should definitely check this movie out. Note that I watched on HD-DVD w/ DD+, but I would imagine the DVD would be good as well.
DrPainMD 08-03-07, 12:56 PM Seems to be that "Hot Fuzz" is all the Buzz around here.... all I can think of when I hear the name is some kind of pron movie

The first scene when Angel (Simon Pegg) is walking into the police station is rediculous. I ended up stopping after a couple of those "whoosh" sounds not long after that and moved to the computer to finish (didn't want to disturb neighbors, since it was later at night). It is overkill, but makes a great bass movie.

The music approaches awful but the bass is beyond intense: look for Bass Mekanik albums. I have "Quad Maximus" and it is earthshaking.

Good, at least I wasn't the only one that thought they went overboard. Halfway through the movie I checked to make sure the subwoofer level wasn't out of whack. A lot of the gunshots just sounded bloomy - more like an explosion than a gunshot. It was really wierd. Completely different from the much more realistic gun battles in Open Range. I was pretty disappointed, because, otherwise, the movie was great.

I didnt think it was really that great or funny. I've seen Red Dwarf episodes that were funnier and that show sucked.
Gary*w* 08-14-07, 11:31 AM Good, at least I wasn't the only one that thought they went overboard.
I think the uber bass was part of the joke. Action movies are famous for big, booming explosions and crashes. Hot Fuzz was a spoof of action films so why not make fun of the sound design too?

I thought so too, but it wasn't that funny... it was just annoying (IMO).

leegeousa 08-24-07, 03:44 PM It will be nice if fellow posters can state the sub(s) they used when they report super duper bassy DVDs. As mentioned earlier by another poster, I am not overwhelmed by some of the discs on the list. So, if you guys are using those tanker size DIY monster subs pumping out 5-6 Hz waves. I’d like to know so I’ll save a trip to the ear doctor.

In the similar fashion, is there any other thread which talks about material on mid-bass range ( 100 hz-250hz) which will really help to judge the quality of speakers and sub...??

alexadams77 08-26-07, 04:27 PM Hot Fuzz had crazy amounts of bass through the entire movie, but the wife and I both agreed that it was a sub-par movie.

not in this particular order but heres a few that come to mind....
1. matrix revolutions
2. war of the worlds
3.chronicles of riddick
4.i robot
5.2 fast 2 furious
6.alien vs predator
7.batman begins
8.Constantine
Their is more movies but these are all I have watched since I got a real sub.. Now I can tell a difference from a door slam to a full out explosion..In the matrix the bass really hits when "the hammer" is flying around :)

I second the motion on REDLINE. It has terrific bass throughout the movie. I must say the girl in the movie also had terrific bass if you no what I mean.:D

thanks man
leegeousa 08-27-07, 03:21 PM Oh, I don't doubt the more recent stuff are more potent. Pulse, for example has the most prolong bass section I've ever heard. It does not have the showy rumbling/lightning-laser flash as in WOTW but its bass is more potent, IMO. However, the original release dates of both Aliens and Blade Runner are more than 20 years ago. There's why I am surprised to see them on the list. But OTOH, people had posted frequencies lown to 5Hz (!!) for some DVDs. It is possible when they remastered these old movies, they added some surprises. The f113 is good but I don't think it can produce anything meaningful below 15Hz.
For people posted these subsonic stuff, can you actually hear/feel it?
DrPainMD 08-27-07, 03:39 PM JL Audio f113.

Well thats good know, I knew some of the movies on the list might be questionable. I'm only going on what was said by other members in the many threads I referenced to.
I'll take them off the list, maybe some one else can verify it also.

DrPainMD 08-28-07, 12:25 AM Hi.
Very interesting thread, BUT too many movies in the list.
"This thread is NOT about if the movie is good or not, it's about if it has "Bass"
Bass is defined different - from person to person..........
Why not reqiure at least 115dB :) - to qualify for the list ?
very interesting indeed.
Iggster 08-28-07, 01:21 AM Ya I dunno whats up but IMO u-571 didn't have the crazy bass like wotw or say even hot fuzz. What is weird is allot of people say it has good bass. Decent yes but not crazy..
The bass in U571 isn't terribly low, most is the 30-40Hz range. It's the volume and steady barrage of LFE during the depth charge scene the gets everyone all riled up.
Pulse ch15 and Running Scared ch8 have got to the lowest, loudest, longest LFE scenes I've found. Played those last night at -5 of reference, now that's crazy bass.
I really enjoy keeping an eye on this thread. After all the discussion surrounding WOTW I bought a copy & watched an 1 hour or so last night - wow, was blown away, some of the best bass I've heard. At 1030pm the wife stuck her head in the lounge room & said "give it a rest people can't sleep when the walls are shaking". priceless :)
Anyway if we get too scientific about exactly what qualifies as "bass" we would loose the freedom & enjoyment to discuss this subject & that would be a shame.

Flageborg 08-28-07, 11:27 AM Here is an list from my homecinema which illustrates differences in max SPL among DVDs - but do they all qualify to be on The BASS List?
All played at same level MV -20dB
1. Finding Nemo, scene 25 - 115db
2. Minority Report, scene 9 - 124db
3. I, robot, scene 18 - 118 db
4. We Were Soldiers, scene 14 - 112db
5. DareDevil, scene 8 - 117db
6. Star Wars I, The Phantom Menace - scene 19-22 - 120db
7. Star Wars II, Attack of the Clones - scene 3 - 120db
8. LOTR - The Return Of The King - The Battle of the Pelennor Fields, scene 37 - 123db
We Were Soldiers is most impressive with its gunfight - M60? rather than dropping those bombs. overall performance: NOT qualified for this list.
Star Wars III, Revenge Of The Sith has an impressive 14Hz? - in a short scene - but how many can confirm this? - overall performance: NOT qualified for this list.

You can download them, its a 4.6GB file, but worth it, since F4 isnt out until Oct.3 and SM3 isnt out until Oct.30, BTW add spiderman 3 to the list, the scene with spidey vs. sandman/venom near the end has some great bass.

I own quite a few of those discs on that list. I agree with the other choices. Somehow I just don't find Aliens (and Alien 4 for that matter) that impressive. Well, may be there are some really low stuff that my sub can't pick up, or it is me. A trip to the ear doctor may be inevitable!
Also, another disc - Animusic, is this the original stereo version? Nothing too spectacular there either.

When I first complied the list, I took all the movies mentioned in the referenced threads on the first page. I'll be happy to take them off. For Aliens, seems strange that it would be on SVS's site to "show off" your sub. On a side note, theres no way Yentl is coming off the list! I'll stand by that!

Yentl? I thought it has a -5Hz rumble running though the entire movie, most impressive!!

That's fine as long as you don't damage the sub first. A word for the wise: Pulse offers some really strong deep sustained bass and even the most robust subs, if played at high output levels, can go by by. ;)

Iggster 09-15-07, 09:36 PM Arlington road (1999) tons of low bass in some scenes, especially in the shootout in the beginning.
hdmi4ever 09-16-07, 07:35 AM Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow caused an earthquake at my place last night! I never knew my subwoofer was capable of such things. I had a half-dozen DVDs stacked on the subwoofer, and during one of the stomping scenes they fell off!
This has now become THE disc to show off my sound system. The movie itself was stupid, but the bass was something I never experienced before.

There are several explosions and other bass-impressive scenes scattered throughout the film, but the most memorable to me was the stomping that starts at 10:35 and goes on for about 3 minutes.

Capable? Very.I thought I would have needed one of those $1000+ subs from SVS or Velodyne to hear and feel bass like that. Sky Captain cured my subwoofer upgraditis (at least for now!). While it might be even more awesome with one of those more powerful subs, I would surely get kicked out of my condo if I played Sky Captain with one of those monsters. I can get away with more than the typical apartment dweller can, since my HT area doesn't share a side wall, I am on the top floor, and the floor beneath me is porcelain tiles on top of soundblocking vinyl on top of concrete slab, but I don't want to push the limits any more than I have.

alexg75 10-06-07, 03:02 AM JASON X-2002 New Line Platinum Series
DD and DTS
I didn't see this title in the master list, but it is very, very worthy of inclusion.
It has very substantial low-end throghout the entire movie.
Here are some highlights:
Ch.1-0:44
Ch.5-13:59
Ch's.23 & 24
For the record,I am using 2 NHT Evolution series subs with the AI amp and X1 crossover as well as 1 Clark Synthesis Shaker.
alexg75 10-06-07, 03:29 AM I just happened to get an advanced copy of the 2 disc TRANSFORMERS DVD yesterday and I watched some of it today and it sounds great as expected.
I didn't see the whole disc yet but I checked out some of the major sequences and you fellow bass-aholics won't be dissapointed. It isn't the lowest or the hardest hitting(HOT FUZZ anyone),but the bass is clean and dynamic.
Here are some highlights:
Ch.2-2:04 opening attack at Qatar Base
Ch.8-38:55 Scorpinok attack in Qatar
Ch.19-1:55:50 end battle sequence and Decepticon flying over-head above pretty girl with descending low tone.

Hellsing:Ultimate Series~Vol. 2-Lim. Ed.(Japanese DD5.1 only)
Even though Vol.1&2 both have English and Japanese DD tracks (the standard versions have DD5.1 in Engish and DD2.0 in Japanese, the LE 2-disc versions have DD5.1 in English and Japanese and DTS5.1 in English), only the Japanese DD5.1 track on Vol.2-LE is worth checking out. I just watched it at my friends house who owns a DefTech Trinity Reference sub  (he's getting a second one next week!):eek: and he and I both agree that this track has one of the most awesomely dymanic surround mixes we've ever heard, with stupid amounts of super powerful bass! :D This was a huge surprise given the relatively modest budget of this OVA anime. Highly recommended!
What bugs me is why none of the other tracks sound as good as the Japanese 5.1 (especially the DTS track)? My best guess is that the North American versions have been dymanically compressed and the sound mixer must have accidentially forgot to compress Vol.2's Japanese 5.1 track because Vol.1's Japanese 5.1 track is also compressed. I'm going to import the R2 version of Vol.1 and see if it's any better.

Not a lot of bass content in those scenes. I would have expected a lot more from this type of movie. They should have taken a tip from An American Haunting. ;)

The bass was deep, just not very loud.
Scottfox 10-09-07, 08:11 PM Well I finalyy bit the bullet and saw Transformers at the Dollar theater. It was well worth the dollar. I saw it at the local Cinemark theater(2nd run). The surround effects were excellent, the volume was good, the bass was decent. They may have turned it down a bit. But I do see good potential for use in my home theater with a HSU VT2mkIII subwoofer. Aside from better bass, I will be thrilled not to have to listen to all the A-holes that won't shut up while the movie is playing. The beauty of seeing it in the early afternoon is that the theater was less than 1/2 full, & surprisingly, it was in one of their better theaters with DTS. Very entertaining, though the plot was thin.:p

Species IV: The Awakening
Been slow to add things to the list as I have been busy.
mailiang 10-13-07, 06:56 PM Some one should plot Spices IV. Not a great movie, very predictable, but it does qualify for good bass, certainly out scoring 1408 in terms of impact.
Ian

Like I expected, the Transformers HD DVD is full of LFE. The big city battle at the end has some of the lowest ive ever felt on my HT setup. I dont have any time stamps yet, or a db meter though.
