How comparable are the intensities of the waterfalls?

The Simpsons movie looks really intense in a lot of areas pushing past pink into white. Comparing it to War of The Worlds, The Simpsons looks a lot hotter. Is this true?

WotW was plotted off the disk, Simpson's was done within the room (Blu ray & HD DVD), the room magnifies the intensity or something like that. Someone more knowledgeable will have to chime in.

I'll do an in room plot of WotW for comparison.

Wow those do look very different. So I think we can conclude that these graphs are not so good to compare which sound track is more intense with the bass.

Thanks for the comparison give me a much better understanding of how to interpret these. I think I prefer the LFE/Subwoofer line out over the mic.

I love all these graphs! And kweezr has done an amazing job contributing them. I just like to analyze things, and I am not saying there is anything wrong with either, just it's good to know the differences.

With the comparison that kweezr recently posted on WotW, lets look at 3 features from the LFE out and try to find them in the mic. First at the bottom of the graph there is a strong isolated frequency at about 23Hz. Second in the middle it goes down below 10Hz. Thirdly, look at the change in the range of frequency between the middle and top.

So some of these artifacts can be caused by lack of response bellow 15Hz, room mode, harmonic distortions, and other artifacts caused by the room.

Just some observations!

Love the waterfalls. I am amazed at how many movies now include loud sub 40hz info. Live Free or Die Hard rocked my Buttkicker (crossover 40hz) from the menu!

It's an easier setup to use a mic and measure the room, LFE only is a little more involved and I'm lazy sometimes.

Sill can't figure out why my 'puter won't read the disc, that's the easiest of all.

The differences in color between WotW is the LFE only was the previous version, the room plot in with the updated. So the colors are bit different.

I'll try and do some LFE only of Shoot'em Up today.

What sound card do you have? Is it onboard or pci?

I think you would need to connected the rs meter to the line in on your sound card or input of the same to your onboard sound. You'll need a rca to 3.5 mini adapter.

You should have a line-in jack. If not, you could try the mic connection, just make sure you disable the 20dB boost. Still I am pretty sure it will not work.

Best way to do it, is to buy external usb sound card. It's cheap and no extra hassle.

Thanks guys, looks like I need an external soundcard. No line in on my computer. Just alot of USB's and the mic and headphone jacks. Of course it has the serial ports and other stuff not related. I want to see what my subs are actually doing in room. I have taken measurements manually but using the correction tables makes it too good to be true. It seems without correction is more accurate. Love these waterfall charts with the chapter index. One can plot a frequency graph with source material at very high spl's, rather than using sine waves at high spl's which could destroy a subwoofer.

Can someone chart a scene in pulse, not the computer room, but there is another scene after that when they are in the desert near power lines. They thought they were safe and then get attacked. When they drive away there is powerful bass, I wanted to know what frequency it was. Thanks

I asked the same question, I think it is 35 hz for the real strong stuff.

direct from the disc it was pushing ref. level dead on 35 Hz. but some others will have different readings.

In general, the closer we get to pink the higher the db level. At -5 in my room the spl meter hit 110db on the above plot.

Ok, I finally got this to work... somewhat. I couldn't duplicate Kweezer's settings exactly. I'm doing this on my SO's laptop which has some DVD playing software on it. Seems to just capture the wave out, but not sure how it's handling bass management. It took a bit of fiddling to get decent output... if I used kweezer's settings, it didn't have enough gain to show much. So you can't compare colors to kweezer's.

Here is the same scene. The final sweep that continues in one direction is at the top (I stopped right after that, as that's the "low" point), it stops with a peak between 14-15 hz:

This graph doesn't look as intense as it seems listening to it. I think it seems so much more intense because the bass is extremely emphasized. It dominates the audio during this period without sharing much with higher frequencies, and it goes on for a relatively long time. And being warble tones instead of more random rumbling, it's more noticeable.

First wide impulse is the immediate explosion from the POV of the back of the van, pretty much. Red splotch is about when the fire consumes the screen and the unlucky security guard. Deepest moment of explosion...

***The graphs backup what I felt while watching. The bomb does indeed have bass but not too much in the infrasonic region, whatsoever. Definitely a "mid-bassy" explosion. The deep stuff in this movie was for more dramatic effect. Complementing the music...etc.***

The brief, green area in the upper 2/3's is when the music comes is...the two pinks spots are from the bass in the music, iirc.

At first glance it sounds just like normal dance song, having those normal bass spikes like umb umb umb, but it is much more than that. The bass sounds a bit harsh and cold, but when you crank the volume up, it feels like the god himself has to come to visit your house. Stongest signal is around ~15Hz and it gets weaker at the upper frequencies unlike in normal songs. This is the first song that really gives a chakedown for my apartment(wich is just one big chunk of concrete), all places rattling and falling apart. :D Of cource you need a big sub wich is low tuned, otherwise the experience will not be as cool.

You can easily damage a driver, if you don't have it properly calibrated, even using a very robust sub.

Spot on. Pulse also had way too much of bass. Even in the scenes there is no need for it. I was feeling bored watching that c-class movie with too much non needed bass.

If I want to demo bass for anybody, I always use the cannon blast scene from master and commander. IMO it's by far the best bass scene there is. Just amazing. Even the WOTW lighning scene is not as impressive as that. It just hasn't that massive feeling of power.

My other mos favorite bass demo scenen is the superman returns, when the guy with the minigun up on the roof is firing his minigun at slow motion. That is just awesome 20Hz burst bass scene. Wave after wave of air moving.

My ears were ringing after the first explosion :eek:

Any scene in Cloverfield could be a bass-demonstration scene imho. From about 10 minutes into the movie right until the very end there was always the monster's footsteps, gunfire, explosions or buildings crumbling to be heard.

It was like the movie was made to be a very long bass demo. Helps that the movie was fantastic as well!

You guys might wanna check out 'Sunshine.' I'm watching it right now on BR, and it has some nice LFE.

I second this. I thought it had a buttload of LFE. I recently got my dual PB12 Plusses set up and have been running through everything I can get my hands on, and Sunshine really impressed me. I thought I had my room bolted down pretty well, but this movie had things buzzing I didn't ever consider in my room. Awesome but now I have more work to do!

This was Bluray with DTS MA core BTW.

You can add in another scene in V for Vendetta, where V says "my turn" and throws the two knives - it's towards the end of the movie. Also, another scene to add would be in Stargate when that huge alien pyramid/ship lands on top of that pyramid the troops are staying in, during the sand storm scene. The LFE in that scene is freakin scary!

One of my all time favorite subwoofer scenes to show off to people is also in The Day After Tomorrow, during the opening credits with the flyby cam of the icebergs - truly effing amazing! This scene ALWAYS gets huge reactions from people when I play it. :D

i just got done watching this movie also and there is great bass in it.

Gotta add Dragon Wars. It's a Korean director making a mixed eastern and western movie. Story is a bit weird but it's got a great bass track throughout the movie. Think Lord of the Rings meets Blackhawk Down with bad acting.

I didn't think the bass was deep, just overly loud. The movie was one of the worst I have ever seen. Pulse looks like the best movie ever made next to dragon wars....

I downloaded spectrum analyzer and will try to get a graph if I can make it work.

I think you answered your own question when you posted the waterfall. Also, you may be running your sub a bit hot or you have a lot of room gain in the 30 to 40hz region.

How do you get the color graph in the bottom left hand corner of your charts?

Honestly I don't know. I downloaded the program Tuesday night and figured out how to use it on Wed by following your instructions. It's a newer version than the one shown in Kweezer's screen shots so it might be a new feature.

You can tweak all the screen capture settings if you go to File -> Screen Capture ->> Screen Capture Options. It should open the screen capture tab at default.

I saw the same youtube clip. :D That basstronics is pretty insane, but it doesn't shake my house as much as Infected mushroom - Institute of sience.

I made some adjustments to the color palette, so now it looks more like the others. Now -20dB is pink and not just dark red like earlier. So, now really strong signal is purple. :p

Seems a bit uneasy way to do graphs. Anyway, the LFE channel contains all the sub frequencies if you have cheked the "use small speakers" in your A/V reciever. It bumbs all the bass from other channels to the LFE channel from the applied crossover point.

That's because we take LFE only by plugging sub-out into the computers line-in. You in the other hand are taking only the computers internal signal wich is stereo. I don't know how that works, all I know that with my audigy ES sound card I was able to do that as well. That method is not as accurate as plotting LFE and you are not getting as much pink because the adjusted volume doesn't affect to the results.

By plotting LFE, you show what is going to the subwoofer only and not what is goining to every speaker.

Yes, the only reason is because Sound Forge doesn't allow you to change the "Range Colors". -20db looks almost exactly as 0db, hard to tell with Sound Forge.

VLFE (Very low frequency effects) would be the under 20Hz stuff. The only reason I bring it up as an option is that there are some of us that like to see how we do w/ the RIDICULOUSLY low stuff to see how our subs are doing, and there are a lot of sub fans that just don't have subs that can go that low. So, for the VAST majority of people, an LFE top 20 would be a great, and, for those w/ monster subs or extremely-low-tuned subs, a VLFE list could be done.

Just a thought. :)

As for a no-subdivision top 20 list -- damn, that might take a bit of thought (and, frankly, most of our lists would look similar, but there are some on your list that I don't own).

Yes I love that dvd. I bought it after renting it. It was a no brainer for 30hz stomping. I highly recommend that one. Another fantastic test is I believe chapter 3 in serenity when they first show the serenity logo and they talk about the ship crashing. There are really hard sharp bass hits move me and resonate many objects in my room. Pretty cool.

You certainly like bass. Do yourself a favor then and BUY, don't rent, Titan A.E. It's a thoughtful, appropropriate, well written relentless bass fest. Think animated Star Wars and you kind of get the idea.

Serenity is just fun. It's also Star Warsy, kinda, though live action. Think of it as if Han Solo were the lead character. The bass grabs you and beats you up some.

There's an IMDb keyword "bass" (http://www.imdb.com/List?keywords=bass&&tv=on). Although I've argued for it for years, there's no description of what keywords are supposed to indicate (and some of them are baffling). Does that list look like it means the same thing we're going for here? Those don't all have fish in them.

If so, tag the movies on the thread list in the IMDb. Details here are good, but it'd be handy to use the other IMDb search tools along with the information.

If that keyword's not on the right track, you can make up a new one. Neither "LFE" nor anything like "Low Frequency" are in use yet.

I tried to think of a "Top 20" movies list that were a must have for BASS and overall surround sound. I would like to break it down even further into categories ( action, sci-fi, animation, horror, etc..) but so far this is what I've come up with.

Once there are enough responses, I will take the most mentioned movies and make the "real" top 20.

I liked the movie, except for the ending

I've updated the first 3 posts with some anchors and cleaned it up some. (Look under the Large font "The Master List", and click on the abcdef.... and you'll goto the letter)

i hope Live Free or Die Hard makes that list....some of those scenes are just mind blowing :) granted not in the league of Master and Commander or WOW but still tons of fun to watch....HOt Fuzz also was flat out ridiculous...great job with everything DrPain! Ive really enjoyed your work and having this as a reference...really made movies more fun!!

Yes to Attack of the Clones, also, I'd like to suggest the Phantom Menace (Star Wars) how can we forget the Pod Race? There's lots of deep bass in that movie.

for once the direct from disc bass matches the LFE...hit 0 on my comp's readout.:eek:

Last I check star wars had a lot of bass, but not so much deep bass. Mainly the bass is blooming around 40Hz, especially in the pod race scene.

Live free or die hard had few really good bass scenes, but I'm not sure if it should be in the list.


One thing I'm sure, the flags of our fathers should be replaced with Letter From Iwo Jima. It has by far better action scenes, sounds and more deep bass. The navy cannon shot are also included in the LFIJ. Even the movie is a lot better than FOOF.

Live Free or Die Hard had only a few good bass scenes, but in my mind, it is the best sounding Blu-ray (DTS-MA) that I have heard so far. This includes the few bass scenes, use of surrounds and clear dialog. But as for Bass, I don't think it should make the list.

I agree w/ everything except I think IT SHOULD make the list :) Even though it had only a few Bass scenes - the ones it had were Amazing. Especially the freeway collapsing scene at the end! Geeeze - I thought my Buttkickers were gonna eject me from the chair (need to install seat belts :eek:).

Also, don't forget the sound of the machine guns in the apartment attack scene at the beginning. There was ALOT of infrasonic mixed into those gun sounds.

Still, I agree it's not a 'bass' movie. Excellent soundtrack though, really outstanding.

There are several kinds of BASS - and the list should represent the very best BASS scenes. Open Range is one of them.

I will deff. give my vote for Die Hard 4.0 and X-Men 3...the bridge scene and house breaking in X-men is just wicked lol...as far as Die Hard...i thought there was tons of bass throughout most of the film...even at some points where it would just come out of no where...granted a pretty decent set-up is needed for some real leg shaking but its really enjoyable to watch...Cant wait to go Blu and really enjoy it! :)

It's an ok movie but some scenes do get intense like the waterfall chart I posted. Has that Silent Hill sound to it, very creepy. Also worth mentioning, there is a scene where you see Eva's booby! :cool:

I loved the intro for Casino, was pretty cool with all the jumping between buildings and then the explosion in the courtyard.

King Kong had lots of bass, maybe not very low but lots.

The rest I dont remember.

On a side note, once all this "top 50" gets sorted out, I'd like to rank the movies on a scale of 5 stars. 5 being Bass heavy and 1 being bass light.

i agree that there are others that should go before King-Kong and U-571...the depth charges are used as reference for a lot of people...also...didn't the first matrix have some pretty sick bass?? Also, if you wanna feel like a kid but also have utterly stupid amounts of bass...watch Happily Never After...there is some ridiculous stuff in there...

I havent seen close encounters or monster house, but thats my opinion on the list to remove :)
