View Full Version : Remote Play 101
Cysquatch 11-23-06, 12:57 PM For those having troubles....here ya go.
Goto to your PSP and under network settings create a NEW CONNECTION under Infrastructure mode.
In WLAN setings, select "Enter Manually" and hit the right arrow.
Enter anything for SSID. You'll need to duplicate this later so make it simple. I just put "ABC". Hit the right arrow again.
Under WLAN security setting, select WPA-PSK (AES), hit right arrow, and enter a WPA KEY. I think it has to be at least 8 characters long with at least a couple numbers. Don't forget it because you'll be entering again on your PS3. Hit right arrow to move to the next page.
With EASY selected, hit right arrow. Enter connection name. I named it the same as the SSID "ABC". Arrow past the Setting list and hit X to save! Don't bother TESTING CONNECTION. It won't work. You are not accessing the PS3 via the internet, you're accessing it over a LAN.
Now to your PS3.
Under network settings go to Remote play settings. Hit right arrow to SSID. Type in "ABC" or whatever you named your SSID on the PSP. Arrow past "WPS-PSK (AES)" and enter the WPA key. Again, same as what you put on the PSP. Right arrow and SAVE!
To remote play: Back out of the settings menu on the PS3 and go to NETWORK, select REMOTE PLAY. The PS3 will tell you to connect your PSP.
To the PSP. Go to NETWORK, select REMOTE PLAY. Its going to ask for a connection. Select "ABC" or whatever you named that new connection you made earlier.
VOILA. You should see the PS3's XMB on the psp. In fact, you'll be controlling the PS3 with the PSP. You'll have access to videos, pictures, music that are stored on the PS3. One thing I did notice is that DVD or Blu-Ray streaming isn't possible currently.
When you access a video or song, it will play on both the PS3 and PSP simultaneously with a small delay. You won't see the video on the PS3 since the big black screen is showing "remote play" in progress. That's an easy fix. Just turn off the TV and receiver and take the PSP in another room to listen to tunes or whatever.
Cool stuff.
I was thinking of posting something like this also as it took me a quite a while to figure it out how to set it up on Tuesday. My mistake was I was trying to use my WEP keys until I realized the REMOTE PLAY doesn't use my wireless router, it connects directly to the PSP.
The only thing I thought was easier is I did it in the opposite order. I found that if you set up the PS3 side of it first and the start the Remote Play mode, setting up the PSP side was easier as all you have to do is tell the PSP to scan for a wireless connection. Then when it finds the "ABC" or as I called my SSID "PSP REMOTE", you just put in your WPA key and you are set.
I'm not trying to confuse anyone, just letting you know how I did it.
The Remote Play is really cool. I am looking forward to future functions being added.

I think more than a few might find this of worth
thanks
maveric23 12-06-06, 12:23 AM ...I realized the REMOTE PLAY doesn't use my wireless router, it connects directly to the PSP...Does this mean that remote play will not work with the 20GB version, even with an external WiFi router?
I just bought a 20GB at BB and was going to open it until I read this thread...if my PS3 isn't remote play capable, I'm returning it... :(
Cysquatch 12-06-06, 01:16 AM Yea, it seems that remote play is only available with the 60g.
cooper1010 12-06-06, 09:09 AM I've followed the instructions above, but have been unsuccessful so far. When I select "Remote Play" on the ps3, I lose my signal to the tv. The ps3 stays on, but my tv displays "no signal found." I have to hold the power button to reset. Any ideas?

Yes Cysquatch is correct. The 60gb version with the WI-FI built in is the only one of the two that can do it.
The PS3 doesn't use the router at all for remote play. It's like it's doing adhoc mode.

Remote play puts the PS3 into 480p mode (which then gets streamed to the PSP) - I'm guessing your input doesnt accept 480p and is giving the error message because of that.

Interesting. I'll have to look into that. Is it b/c I'm using HDMI - DVI? Also, even if I lose picture on my tv, shouldn't it show up on the psp? Thanks for the info.
maveric23 12-06-06, 09:30 AM Do you guys who have used remote play think that this feature alone is worth owning the 60GB over the 20GB? I don't know whether I should hold off to buy the 60GB. Thanks for your assistance! :)

I'm not sure if that would cause a problem or not :(
As soon as you press Remote Play on the PS3, it switches to 480p and says:
"Connect a PSP system using a remote play connection.
O Back"
At that point, select "Remote Play" on the PSP and select your PS3 connection (which you should have been able to setup earlier), after a few seconds the PS3 XMB will appear on the PSP and the PS3 output will change to:
"Remote Play in Progress
O Back"
You might want to try plugging in the PS3 A/V cable just so you get a picture (while you set it up). At the point where your screen loses signal, you should be able to still hit O and return to the 720p/1080i XMB and quit remote play.
Maveric: At this time, no. In the future I see a lot of neat features (at least I hope I do!) coming out for it. One example they used when announcing it is the ability to use the PSP as a rearview mirror in racing titles.
With that said, I love the ability to stream content (video, music, etc..) to the PSP from anywhere in the house. Good if you're working on something and need some form of entertainment (watch a movie, a tv show, listen to your mp3 collection). The rumor is that soon it will expand and allow you to control the PS3 from the PSP and play certain games (where the controls stream from the PSP to the PS3 and the video (gameplay) streams to your PSP). The other (and more likely) rumor is that you'll be able to turn it into a fully functioning Location Free player and access your content from any wifi access point.. If this is the case then you won't need the 60G model as it'll be streamed through your router.
With all said and done, I dont regret the 60G at all. I knew I wanted one for the PSP connectivity and even convinced myself to get a 20G when it was all that was available.. Turns out my order was cancelled and I came across a 60G afterall. Very happy I went this route.. the wireless PSP connection, wifi connection, card reader and large HD are very useful to me.
cooper1010 12-06-06, 09:55 AM Sofdec7,
Thanks, I got it. I did two things; don't know which one fixed it: I downloaded 1.30 and enabled ATRAC (which the online manual said was necessary for remote play). Now all I have to figure out is - why do I want to use remote play? I know some fancy things are in the pipeline, but doesn't seem to useful now. Thanks again.
Sofdec7 12-06-06, 10:09 AM Not a whole lot to do with it yet, but I like to have it to both watch video files stored on the PS3 - if you have a movie, tv show, music, etc.. stored on the system you can stream it quite a distance - an example would be if you're in the kitchen or garage and want to use it as a music player with access to your entire library or watch a movie while doing a monotonous task which doesnt require a whole lot of attention..
I know it sounds horrible and useless, but I was surprised how much I've used it so far (while not a whole lot, I have used it a few times). Once it becomes more interactive it will be a much better feature - currently it seems they added it just to list it as another feature.
Another thing I'd suggest is to adjust the quality settings.. you can get a very nice quality by adjusting this.. especilly good for movies which look much nicer than any PSP videos I've converted.
maveric23 12-07-06, 11:14 AM Any chance that the 20GB models could be "remote play" ready with a future firmware update? This is the only thing holding me back from tearing into my 20GB that I bought 2 days ago. Just imagine my agony... :o
DTexman 12-07-06, 02:11 PM Cooper- Did you change to the AV cables or still go through the HDMI/DVI cable? I am having the same issue as you and am using HDMI/DVI cable and the screen goes blank and have to power on/off to get PS3 to work again. I did download new update and have ATRAC enabled so did not know if I needed to use the AV cable to get it to work.
hossmans 12-07-06, 05:45 PM I got it to work by going into my display settings, manually changing the resolution to 480p only (uncheck the others), and boom it worked. Just put it back when your done. I'm sure they will patch it up with time. Its an HDMI issue from what I can tell.
I just got my Remote Play to work. Functions are cool but does anyone know if you can load up a BluRay movie and stream it to the PSP, or play a Game? (eg. Resistance on the PSP)... it doesn't seem to show up on my PSP. THANKS
GamerGuyX 12-14-06, 02:10 AM Is it just me or does everything look like absolute crap on the PSP when using Remote Play? Everything looks compressed with artifacts and low resolution. Nothing like the quality of the actual PSP XMB.
Sofdec7 12-14-06, 07:46 AM If you press the Home button on the PSP you can select the quality level. By default I think its set to "Stream Fast / Low quality" - you can adjust this to stream slower (meaning there is a slight delay in button presses) but have a higher quality.

No on the games. Yes on video however, it has to be video stored on the hard drive. I'm sure Blu-ray streaming will be possible in the future.
What firmware version do you need for the remote play on the PSP. I have version 2.81 and can't seem to find remote play or network on the PSP. I only see Network settings.

I think 3.0 or higher.
Cyborg6971 12-21-06, 03:04 PM I have mine hooked up thru my router can I access my ps3 if my modems on and ps3 anywhere as long as someone is at the helm of the ps3 turning on the remote play feature? That would be tight as well as the location free feature.
eddiebrock 12-21-06, 04:16 PM Does this work with all firmware versions of the PSP? I don't want to update it so I can't play any emulators on it.

It only works with firmware V3.00 or higher.

This is exactly the behavior I want because I want to be able to use a PSP as a remote control to select MP3s stored on the PS3 playing out on my stereo. That way my TV can stay off and I can select music even when I'm not nearby. However it's unfortunately not working as you say...
I can stream music fine to the PSP from the PS3, but I don't hear any audio from the PS3. It's hooked up to the TV directly using HDMI, but to my receiver using the digital optical connection.
In the PS3's audio output settings I tried switching the audio connection to HDMI, but I still didn't hear anything (from my TV).
Can someone confirm that this should work? Thanks.

Cysquatch, how is your audio set up? Thanks.

Running optical from the PS3 to my receiver. If I want to remote play (music for the most part), I either turn off the receiver or switch to another source (if the family wants to watch TV). Same goes for the TV (switch it off or change to HDMI 2 for TV).
bassmonkeee 01-10-07, 01:35 AM Pretty cool. I can see this coming in handy in the future.
Thanks for mentioning it. I knew there was going to be PSP connectivity, but I didn't know that's what Remote Play was referring to 9okay, i admit--I only read so far into the PS3 manual before I started downloading demos, and I haven't gone back yet.).

The PS3 audio is not active if it is in remote play mode. The only sound coming out is on the PSP. Would be great if it came out on both.
uaswimmer1995 01-16-07, 11:09 PM I cannot find on my PSP where to adjust the quality by streaming slower. I have everything working fine except I'd like the better quality.
