View Full Version : PS3 HDMI 1080p through AV Receiver Problem

Hello all, I have a question if anyone is having this problem or if it's just my setup isn't compatible. I have the Sony 46" XBR2 LCD "full 1080p" tv, an Onkyo TX-SR674/S AV Receiver, and the PS3.

Now my problem is that I can't get a steady 1080p signal when I run the PS3 through HDMI to my receiver. The picture shows up and accepts the connection, but the screen constantly flickers.

So basically what I've done is I've run the PS3 through HDMI directly into the TV and run an optical out from the PS3 to my receiver. It works fine this way, but I bought this setup and this receiver because it had 1080p passthrough and didn't want to change video inputs or audio inputs everything I turn on my PS3 :(

Is there a workaround or is everyone having this problem when trying to run the PS3 directly through a receiver that supposedly supports 1080p passthrough? Someone please help!

If you connect the PS3 directly to the HDTV and it indicates 1080p input as the source using BOTH HDMI cables and BOTH HDMI inputs on the receiver (I see that it has two HDMI inputs), then what you have is a receiver that is not up to spec. Contact Onkyo or return it.

Additionally, does the receiver has any problems with 1080i video, either passthrough or upconverted (DVD video upconverted by the receiver)?

I have the SAME EXACT PROBLEM, same hardware but different TV. the symptoms are the same, the screen output in 1080p is not steady, it will work most of the time in games or movies, but it will become jittery and snowy at times. In 1080i it works fine. i was going to go the same route as you and go directly to the TV but wanted to solve the problem. I noticed on my old PS2 using component outputs, the image too was jittery, but not as bad.

I too am having this same exact problem but with different hardware... in my case a Sony VPL50 projector and a Pioneer Elite 82 receiver. Typically I cycle through the projector inputs to clear up the problem.

Maybe these receivers aren't up to passing 1080p or the PS3 is having issues?

I'm not quite concerned right now, 1080i works just fine. But once the PS3 firmware is updated to allow 1080p/24f, then this will be a bigger issue.

if the PS3 connected to the TV is fine but through the receiver is not, logically one would deduce that the receiver is having the problem.

Your receiver must be capable of passing through 1080p...if it isn't, then it will only pass 1080i.

My receiver will pass through 1080p.

According to your sig, we have the same receiver (the Pioneer Elite 82). Unless Pioneer QC isn't what it should be, perhaps we're looking at an HDMI cable issue here. When I get time this weekend, I'll have to bypass the receiver to check.

I'm using a 30ft Blue Jeans cable. No issues with 1080i.

i'm using a 3foot blue jeans cable. passing thru the receiver works, but not well. as an example, i was just playing ridge racer, and it started getting all snowy. i reset the ps3, checked all the cables and turned it back on. the screens came on, but were jittering side-to-side. i tried calling the onkyo support center by me and there was no answer; i emailed sony ps3 support and that too yielded no answers...i'm not convinced it isnt the ps3 and how the signal is sent versus the receiver being the problem. when games and movies are set to automaticlly use the best audio setting in the ps3, the audio output is shown in the onkyo display as multich, not DD or DTS. somethign is fishy and i'm not sure what it is. could it have to do with HDMI 1.1, 1.2, 1.3?
im using a sharp 37D90, pluggin the ps3 into the 2nd hdmi port on the TV using the same blue jeans cable yields a perfect picture..

It is more than likely a reciever issue. My Yamaha RVX-1600 has this problem. It will only pass 1080i or 720p, not 1080p. I just changed the PS3 setting to 1080i, I can not tell any difference in pic quality on my VPL-VW100 (Sony Ruby 1080p projector). This way I can get the lossless sound on some of Blue Ray discs.

Receiver issue. Many people (myself included) prefer however to keep video (HDMI to TV) and audio (optical to receiver) seperate.

I'd definite start by bypassing your receiver to make sure your projector is accepting the 1080p signal.

In your video pass through settings, do you have it set to PURE?

According to Pioneers site:

Three all-digital HDMI inputs require only one-cable connection to your HDTV and transfers huge amounts of high-definition audio and video, including 1080p signals from tomorrow's soon to be available Blu-Ray Disc® players — without loss of quality

Good suggestion to check; unfortunately, it is set to PURE.

I'll just need to try going direct from PS3 to projector; although, if I remember correctly that's the way it was originally hooked up before adding the receiver into the chain. It's looking more likely that the receiver isn't working quite as it should.

receiver is the problem.
Man, I almost jumped for the onkyo this week. Glad I waited...

Interesting. I have Onkyo 604, PS3, 60" sxrd and I'm not having any video dropout issues. I'm getting multichannel pcm, just watched Blu-ray Kingdom of Heaven and it looked fantastic.

In your case it may be a cable issue. With long runs of HDMI you may not get adequate signal to noise resulting in poor performance at 1080p (static, sparkles, random signal drop-out etc..)

Does your 30 ft cable work when connected directly from the ps3 to the display @ 1080p?

Ditto for me. I have the PS3, Onkyo 604 and Sammy DLP. No issues so far and Im getting 1080p/PCM via HDMI.

Ive only watched a few minutes though (just got the onkyo last week), ill watch more this weekend and make sure I dont have occasional dropouts or anything.

I also have a tosh a2 and have watched a few movies on it. 1080i signal is great and no dropouts. Sound is good. No probs.

I have a similar problem.
PlayStation 3 (60GB) firmware 1.9 --> HDMI --> Pioneer Elite VSX-82TXS --> HDMI -->Sony KDL-52XBR3
The first day (mid July 2007), both blu-ray & regular dvds worked (although every now & then the PS menu started flickering). I think this was before I updated the firmware.
Now, I can only play regular DVDs. BDs only give the audio, and I see the following msg on the TV screen - "Unsupported signal. Please check your device output".
However, when I connect the PS3 directly to the TV (with HDMI), it works just fine.
I don't know if I need to contact Sony or Pioneer. If anyone has ideas, please let me know.
All the settings on PS3 and the receiver are correct to the best of my knowledge.

Update on 8/2/2007: Called Sony and the support guy figured it in 2 min.
Settings --> BD/DVD Settings --> BD 1080p 24Hz Output --> Changed this setting from Automatic to Off
Everything works great now (almost). I still get the flickering screen sometimes. I do get rid of it by redoing the following setting:
Settings --> Display Settings --> Video Output Settings --> HDMI --> Automatic (ok to all confirmations)
