Another strong contender. Mvix's big downside previously, in my opinion, was lack of networking, now they have that remedied.

It's an interesting product at a good price point, but I question some of their design choices.

1. The hard drive interface is PATA instead of SATA. The SATA drives are more common now, easier to hook up and (I believe) getting cheaper than comparable PATA in the largest sizes.

2. The product doesn't seem to support FLAC.

3. The digital video output is DVI instead of HDMI.

Most of these units use PATA drives... I'm not aware of any that use SATA HDDs. I'm not a big FLAC user, so I can't comment on other units with FLAC support. The DVI thing doesn't bother me since it can be converted to HDMI with a cable.

It's going to be hard to be able to decide among the TViX 5000, 5101, 4000, the MediaGate MG-350HD, the Eureka LX350HD, and this Mvix...

The MX760HD supports .iso DVD playback, as well as .vob/.ifo and .ts. Plus DTS pass-thru. Not bad.

If only they had a way to support Cover-art for DVD titles (and album-art for ripped mp3) this unit *might* be perfect.

As it is, they only use icons for each title (movie reel icon for movie and folder icon for album)

Well, if the MVix page is correct, and they are in stock, I should have my hands on one early next week.

Wow, how exciting Squished, please be talkative once you get it in!

I have to admit this is very promising, and it has a leg up on the current TViXs because of the LAN connectivity.

Does anyone have any experience enough to be able to compare Mvix to the Mediagate products, or in general even? (support, firmware, etc.)

Thanks.

I'll make sure to let everyone know how well it works. I'm primarily looking to use it for IFO and HD transport streams, but I can toss a divx or two at it.

Where's the WPA support? Why is wireless security an afterthought on every box but the DSM-520?

Yeah, that kinda irked me too, but I planned on going wired for it anyway since I don't trust wireless for 2-3MB/sec HD traffic.

All I can figure is it might be a licensing deal? WPA may require paying license fees that many of these companies don't want to have to tack on to the price? D-Link having WPA makes sense... they are primarily a router vendor anyway.

I'd be curious if they are paying all the MPEG-LA fees.

I'm also curious if H.264 support is in the wings. Don't really need it now since everything I encode is either TS or XviD, but it would be handy in the future.

I think it is driven primarily by the chipset. The latest Sigma chip has features X, Y and Z, so all the latest gen media players have features X, Y and Z.

Yesterday afternoon I pulled the drive from my Mvix MV-5000U and installed it in the 760hd. Hooked it up to my RPTV via component and audio/video receiver via optical when I got home. Played some iso's,ifo and vob's from ripped dvd's with no problem.

Then I connected it to my Linksys WRTG54GS wireless router with a cat5 cable, followed the directions in the manual to enable connection to my PC in the basement (via wireless)that has video and mp3's stored on a USB and local drive. Started to stream an avi file and it handled that with no problem. Switched to an iso from a ST:TNG ripped dvd and the unit froze twice while selecting an episode to play. Rebooted the unit and on the third try it played with no apparent difficulty (only played 5 minutes). Switched to an mpg4 file I had and that began to play after approx. a 2 minute delay (not sure why). After 5 minutes I switched to another ripped dvd, selected the ifo and the menu came up. I was able to navigate the menu like normal. I played the movie for about five minutes with no difficulty. Switched to mp3's, once again no problems.

I'll be able to give it more of a test this weekend when I'll (hopefully) have the time to play a full movie.

Is the firmware support on Mvix compareable to Tvix? (Since M4000 has been delayed to almost end of the month, i am toying with the idea of cancelling the order and ordering MX-760HD instead)

Great minds think alike :D

From what I have gathered thus far from my research (I found that Hi-Jack also has good info on streamers), it seems TViX support is really at the top of the line. Or in other words MViX comes not even close in this regard. However, please note that this is rather an uneducated assumption.
I hope I can be proven wrong on this one....

I just got my MX-760HD today. Setup was easy (I've got a 4000U too) and I had it on my network in a matter of minutes. I tried to play a ripped movie from my computer (DVDshrink rip) and it was very jumpy via the wireless. (Unwatchable) I figured that I wasn't getting a good wireless signal and I would have to tweak that, so I ran a honkin' long ethernet cable from my router to the new player. Same issue. Didn't see much in their knowledgebase. The only reason that I bought this thing was so that I could watch movies that I have stored on my computer as well as the ones that are on the hard drive in the unit itself. Anyone have any ideas?

Eric;
To narrow down the issue I would probably try next:
1. to play another movie over your LAN
2. to play a movie from the MX's HDD and/or a connected USB HDD

How do you access the files on your PC? I understand that depending on the product there are different ways (NFS, SAMBA); some are better, i.e. faster, more reliable, etc., than others.

I tried several movies over the LAN. They'll play ok until there's a lot of action on the screen, then it gets jumpy. I've contacted their tech support, but haven't heard anything lately. I'll try to return it if I can't get it to work, as it won't be any better than my 4000U.

Movies play fine off of the internal HDD. I haven't tried a USB hard drive yet. I left my external one at work, but I'm assuming that it will work fine. I'll give it a try though.

My "network" at home is a XP Pro box connected to a WRT54G router. I had to install IPX/SPX NWlink on the XP box apparently to get the Mvix to see my windows box. I'm assuming it's just a bandwidth issue, as I don't know how much bandwidth a DVD consumes. All QoS is disabled on the router. I suppose I COULD try to put a second NIC in the XP box and connect it direct with some static IP configurations and see if bypassing the router helps at all.

Thanks!

- Are you using NAT on your Router ? (Disable it and try)

- Do you have firewall enabled on your Router ? (Disable it and try)

Let Us know and thanks in advance.

I'll dig around in the router and see if I can change some settings around. All of my computers/network nodes are on the 192.168.1.x network and the router has a separate external address...

Along those lines and as an interim you could also try a cross over cable to connect PC and MX directly to see if the issue is with the router.

Note to self: DO NOT remove the upper most thumbscrew when installing the hard drive. Springs and other bits will come flying out at you. The spring and E clip were pointless anyway. The top thumb screw only needs to be loosened one turn or so anyway.

Why in the world they made the top screw a thumbscrew is beyond me.

I had just assumed it was DVI-D, and would only talk to digital monitors. I tried it on a flat panel, but the only one I had handy was a 23" 1920x1200 display, and it no likey. Didn't bother to try a DVI to VGA adapter and a standard CRT.

I didn't want to barge in and hook it up to someones Dell 24"... I'm sure that would have worked since it has DVI/RGB/Component/S/Composite.

I'll make it home... eventually... and try it there.

I played around with the router to no avail. I even tried (not that I know what I'm doing) to convert a VOB file to AVI to see if that would help, and it might have actually been worse. So far, not too impressed with the product. Not sure if I can find a x-over cable. Someone at work might have one.

Have you contacted Mvix? I'm reading this thread with great interest. I just returned the Galaxy Metal Gear IPTV-TMG (poor implementation) and came across this device today. It sounds too good to be true. I sent them a number of questions today and got pretty quick responses. I'm wondering how their support is.

While I was sending them questions today, I sent them a link to this thread and told them there were mixed results with streaming via wired connections. Haven't gotten a response from them. Hopefully you've heard something.

I contacted them. You're right, their support is generally pretty quick. They gave me a fairly "canned" answer that didn't meet any of my needs. I'm very frustrated so far. The product itself is much better than the 4000U that I also have, but it doesn't do what I plunked down the $300+ dollars for, which is watch DVDs from my home computer via wired or wireless network. Perhaps technology just isn't there yet. If I can find a cheap hard drive enclosure, I suppose I could just transfer movies to a spart 320GB hard drive that I have, but that's just a band-aid in my opinion.

That concerns me. I'm ready to order this thing but as you say, this might be too bleeding edge to jump in just yet. Seems there are more of these devices coming to market now and with CES 2007 just around the corner, maybe its worth waiting to see what is announced.

My original game plan was to have a MCE machine as my core distribution 'hub' with XBOX 360s in the rooms where I want to watch the distributed media. It would seem that is the least expensive, most practical way of doing this. However, I also did not plan to store all of my media local to the MCE machine. Instead, I wanted to pick up a NAS device, such as the Infrant ReadyNAS, and have it connected to my network directly. This would allow me to use the device not only to store all my media but also allow my wife and I to 'backup' data from our work or other PCs. The problem with this configuration is that MCE extenders (Xbox360) do not recognize mapped drives that are physically external to the MCE machine. Meaning, it won't see data on the NAS device.

So I started looking at these middleware devices. I've owned a couple in the past (Dlink DSM-320 as an example) and was disappointed with their implementation (didn't support nested folders very well, large collections of media, etc.). I was hoping that these devices have come along way since then. However, I'm finding they are all intent on adding more and more interconnects, more media formats and codecs but still lacking the depth and detail that would make them true 'appliances' for distributing media in the home. These devices also don't support the MS-DVR format of the MCE tv recorded video files so MCE would come out of my game plan and I would turn to a standard XP Pro machine with tv tuner card and SageTV.

So there is my dilemma. I'm still tempted to pick up this device as it seems to be the most well rounded. I would prefer it to be out for a bit longer and give the vendor a chance to support it, enhance it, etc. Would be interesting to know how these guys have handled support of the predecessor devices (4000, 5000).

I think in the year or so that I've had the 4000U they've upgraded the firmware 3 times. One of them was pretty major, and the rest were fairly transparent to me. I'm hoping that some other people can jump in here and offer some support, but I may be holding my breath for a while. So far I'm on the fence about the product. I'm willing to jump through some hoops to get it to work, but I don't want to go too crazy. I've probably got about 100 movies on various hard drives. I've ripped almost all of my 3 year old daughter's movies to the 320GB drive that is internal to the unit. It's nice because I don't have to worry about her scratching the DVD's or the DVD's not playing because they're too beat up. I have all of my other movies ripped to my computer and another loose hard drive that I used to switch into the 4000U when my daughter wasn't watching them, but it was such a pain, that's why I wanted a network device. On paper, this device could be perfect for me. In real life, it's not panning out that way. Another HUGE thing would be to be able to display cover art. I inquired about it with my 4000U, but they haven't changed anything. It would be the cat's a$$ to be able to just click on the picture of the cover instead of navigating to the /hdd1/movies/cars/video_ts folder and then clicking on the appropriate file. That's just an inconvenience though. If I had to pick between network functionality and pictures, I'll take the functionality any day.

I hooked mine up this evening and in my opinion it SUCKS. Now that I have your attention let me tell you what I currently use so that you know where I'm coming from. In my house right now I have 3 showcenter 200's hooked up to 3 different HDTV's. My main TV being a 60" Sony sxrd that can run 1080p. The Showcenters are all being served by a 5tb RAID server which holds all my dvd rips. I've never owned a TVIX unit so I can't tell you if the MVIX is any better than those.

First off... I don't know why these manufacturers think everyone like to have these devices standing on end? Mose people have home theater systems with amps, dvd players, vcrs, tivos etc that sit horizontally. xbox 360's and nintendo wii's sit vertically but those are toys. so i guess mvix and tivx want their devices to be considered toys rather than home theater devices?

outputting 1080P, 1080I or 720P over DVI causes the picture to be off center. the menu and the videos are displayed flush right with a black bar on the left side. If i output 480p dvi everything is ok. if I output 1080i over component then it is centered but there are small black bars on the right and left side of the screen.

the remote is very flimsy. it reminds me of the POS remote that comes with the avel linkplayer 2. the remote is very light and narrow. it is very uncomportable to hold. If you insist on getting a mvix get a universal remote.

the user interface sucks. you basically just navigate the directories and select the file you want to play. if you want to see a nice UI check out swisscenter. it is a server side http and sql server that can organize your videos. helpful if, like myself, you have hundreds of movies to navigate.

the box is slow and unresponsive. navigating the menus is slow and it seems taxing on the processor. sometimes if i'm pressing say the settings button i hit it and there is no response so I hit it again still nothing then i hit the power off button and a minute later the device eventually powers off. very very slow.

one good thing about the device it does play iso files. and thats the only good thing about this "toy"

edit... Oh yea... the free t-shirt was cool too

edit again... I also forgot to mention the fan on this this is loud too. There is a destinctive "suck"ing sound coming from this box.

Most of my content will be digital photos organized in folders by date of event, DVR files (from PC oriented TV tuners, etc.) and a very extensive (60gb+) music collection organized by artist / album / tracks. My wife's dream is to be able to sit on our patio and listen to music on our outdoor speakers, using a RF remote to change the music she wants to listen to. I would also like to be able to watch or listen to what we want from any location in the house without worrying about the location of the media. It would also be nice to be able to keep movies in ISO files and play them from the centralized storage as well.

I really expect these devices to be nearly plug 'n play. I don't mind some tweaks, enabling sharing of folders and storage devices but not much more than that. I already have my handsful organizing and managing the data store.

Anyway, sorry - didn't mean to move the conversation away from the original topic. I remain interest in this device and hope others can chime in. I realize its new and not sold by anyone other than the manufacturer and possibly 'thinkgeek' so not many have it as yet.

Regards,
David

There MAY be some settings in Setup to change that, but I don't even have an HDTV that I've tried it on, so I can't comment. It would be annoying if you can't fix it though. Bring it up with Mvix and inquire about fixing it in a firmware update. I don't think that Mvix is even the manufacturer though, I think that Unicorn is.

To be honest, I don't think any of these devices in the under $1000 category are suitable for the audience you would think the features indicate. Most of these devices are more appropriate for someone with hundreds of mp3 files, dozens of videos and a couple years of photos.

For the rest of us that want to manage our media 'libraries' of 10s of gigabytes of music, lifetime supplies of photos and endless video libraries from ripped or DVR recorded media, I get the feeling we are still better suited for the higher end Escient type devices that are intended to focus on music or video and do what they do pretty well.

I'm hoping a vendor proves me wrong soon! I think the time and functional requirements warrant having a middleware appliance that sits between your media server (be it a NAS, NDAS or PC with mass storage) and your output device of choice (TV, projector, PDA, etc.) and allows you to navigate using some means of browsing conveniently through artists, genres, etc., with great speed and efficiency.

I think the market is ready and I think the number of products attempting this is indicating that we are in need of convergence 'middleware appliances' to help us do this.

There is no way I'm buying into these devices unless I can use everything in the location intended through automated interconnectivity.

FWIW, I'm watching a movie on my player via a USB external drive with no problems. I can always take the external drive up to my computer and move movies around that way, but again, that's not the reason I bought this thing.

Well, I'm running into problems with HD transport streams. The problems others are having with DVD over network also crop up with HD from the built-in HD.

When there is a lot of motion, the video pauses. It appears it is having trouble dealing with a lot of motion vectors or higher bitrates... not sure yet.

Black level on the component output is wrong... and gamma appears to be wrong. Details in dark areas are lost if you try and correct the black level with the brightness control (at least on HD transport streams.)

The brightness and contrast controls are WAY too course. In one step you go from losing all detail in dark areas to a washed out grey in black areas.

When selecting an .IFO, just before the movie starts, it may show a totally different media file name.

This is firmware revision 0.2.61108

Time to give them a call and ask what they plan to fix.

I expect a firmware update in the not too distant future. Hopefully it addresses some issues. I don't have anything Higher-Def than a normal DVD, and I don't have it hooked up to my HDTV player, which is in my bedroom, but maybe this weekend I'll try the DVI port and see how things look.

Does anyone know if you can access this thing via the network? If I could push things to the hard drive and delete thing via the network, that would be cool.

This was in an email that i just got from them:

Q: "...but what if I want to transfer files wirelessly to the 'Mvix'-HDD?"
A: OK, you got us there... SORT OF. Although the ability to transfer files across the wireless signal is not an option YET, we will be releasing a FIRMWARE update that will allow you to enable this drive as a NAS/NDAS device, which means you will be able to manage (transfer/delete/move) the files on the internal hard drive via your network computers. We have no ETA on this firmware update yet, but STAY TUNED because this feature is coming!

Q: "So you are telling me that I can watch videos and movies stored on my PC by simply connecting this media center to my PC and TV?"
A: YES, ABSOLUTELY - that's one of the cool features of Mvix Wireless HD Media Center. Now you don't have to copy and move any media from your main PC. Simply hook up the MX-760HD to your HDTV or Plasma and then enable wireless/wired connection to your PC, share all folders and files on your PC... and now you can stream all the media to your TV.

They forgot to mention "in theory" on the second question. lol

I concur, the MX-760HD is not ready for prime time. I did not think a company would release a product buggier than the DirecTV HR20. Must have been rushed out for the season, I'm guessing. Same problems as others have noted: off center, lock-ups, slow menu response, etc.

Based on the previous message, I thought that NAS was only a wireless limitation. I could not figure out how to do it, even in wired mode. I'll be quite surprised s is the case. I was able to stream MPG and IFO files for a little while before it locked up.

I was hoping this was going to work. I do like the price, the portability and that it's quiet and does not generate a lot of heat. Seems like an HTPC with WMC or Vista with the My Movies plug in is a better way to go, however.

Does the MX760HD display photos in High Definition?

Is there a blackout or lag between pictures during a Slideshow. Please describe.

Does it play internet radio?

It started out very good, that I was almost hooked with it. Now it turned out to be a sucked one. Some one has a post saying that any product under $1000 cannot be good as a reliable wireless hard drive media player. In fact, I kept watching and waiting for a good one < $500. Is there one in the market any of you knows about? Thanks for sharing.

Interesting note... I did hook up a DVI to VGA adapter, and the mvix does do VGA, although it has a limited number of VGA resolutions it will do... 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280*960, 1280*1024.

Frustrating that it doesn't do TV resolutions out the VGA connector (720P, 1080I, 1080P).

I apologize for disappearing from this thread. I agree with other owners of this device, the network streaming sucks. I tried streaming a dvd from my basement pc to the 760hd through my linksys wireless router and had dropouts up the ying yang.

A few days later I tried streaming from my laptop that I connected to the router via a cat5 cable so that there was no wireless involved at all and still had streaming problems.

Next I will try converting to divx format and then stream the movie that way. I'm having problems finding a program that converts dvd files to divx that is compatible with the 760hd. I tried the one they recommend on their site (SuperG) but I don't see an option for 5.1 sound. The one that seems to work so far is AutoGK. I'll keep you informed.

Thanks for your update. I think that Mvix has "closed" my support ticket, even though they really did nothing to resolve it. I also inquired about the NAS/NDAS firmware and he said that they didn't know when it was coming and that it would be in their newsletter. I'm not holding my breath at this point, and to be honest, I regret my decision to plunk down the money for this unit. On the other hand, my brother-in-law will be the lucky recipient of my 4000U, so he should be happy and I'm adequately content I suppose.

After looking at all the other similar mdeia players I bought this one because of the wireless networking in the hope that I will eventaully be able to "push" data onto the internal HDD from my PC. So far the until functions adequatley - playing xvid and .iso from the internal HDD with no problems (over the DVI @ 1080i). However although I have the woreless correctly configured and working I can't see any shares on the PC - I haven't been able to install the NETBEUI protocol even when following the MS instructions! Can anyone who has managed to get this working give me some pointers - it seems a bit bizzare that you need to install 3 network protocols as the instruction manual seems to suggest.

Adam,
If you get a chance ......

download some of the large 1080p WMV-HD examples from Microsofts website and see if they play on your MVIX from the internal HDD:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/contentshowcase.aspx

Also, using your internal HDD, try a few regular Video_TS folders from some ripped DVD's and see if they are cool too.

your report will help others (namely me) make decisions on getting this unit.

Did you ever try your DVI connection like you said you would? I know you don't have anything higher then a SD DVD, but I was wondering if the video image is off-center using the DVI connection and if the colors were off like Sy- claims, or if his situation is an isolated incident.

wow, sounds like a lot of bad news. i do believe that it has $300 worth of features, but the problems make me want to pass this one up. the htguys gave a review of this product today and it sounds like they had more success. they only really tested performance of various formats over the wireless connectivity, and they reported what was expected (it had a harder time displaying hd content and stuff like that). they failed to have any of the other problems you guys were mentioning, like the upscaled output not filling the screen or slow gui. maybe these can be fixed with a firmware update? i'm not sure how often mvix releases updates, but i wanted to trust this particular product (and mvix) so much.

the big feature here is the ethernet/wireless, but if it can't do that up to standards, then it isn't worth buying. not yet, anyway. it also seems like there's software that needs to be installed for the wireless to work, which could potentially be a hassle.

someone already asked, but does anyone know if there are any similar products that have ethernet at the very least? a reputable brand, preferred. i know there's some other product that looks like this mvix, rebranded; wireless and all. i was also looking at the latest tvix (for awhile) which seems to do everything this mvix can, minus the wireless feature. at this point, i know wireless isn't the best thing to use for all media, so it's not so important to me. i suspect i'll be doing a search right now.

FWIW, I was listening to mp3 files via wireless last night. I didn't have any streaming problems. The interface really needs to be cleaned up though. It does nothing with ID3 tags and only file names, and it takes too long to scroll through the file name to see what song you've got (if you've got a long file name)

My other beef, and I've contacted Mvix, is that I can't get repeat to turn off, which is rather annoying as I have to play each track one after another.

Hopefully they get back to me.

I also couldn't figure out how to do a photo slideshow while listening to music. I was able to listen to some tunes and play a photo from folder full of photos, but I had to manually move back and forth between photos.

Been playing w/ mine the last couple of days. Easy setup, saw my network shares w/ no problem.

I'm using w/o hard drive installed - streaming everything over wired network. Output to DVI.

Love the .iso DVD streaming -- that's why I got this unit and it's great. A few glitches on some discs, but haven't reviewed enough to see if it's an .iso-specific issue or not.

I'm using a Logitech Harmony remote w/ it, so the cheap remote doesn't worry me.

I have similar issues that I'm hoping get resolved on the next firmware update:

- slightly off-center picture
- No 1080p - my 1080p TV shows "invalid signal". Currently using 1080i.
- Doesn't see my AAC files.

There is some slowness when it's first refreshing directories. May depend on how you have your files organized.

So far, it's very worth $300 to me.

What equipment are you using? I mean everything from ethernet switch to the device that holds the network shares. I'm using a Gig ethernet wired connection, and while it sees the network shares and plays music fine, playing an iso or any other video has nothing but dropouts on audio. I'm going to play with different ethernet switches, perhaps just a back to back cable with no switch, etc. to see if I can get it to work, but I'd like to know more details on your setup since you seem to have video streaming working with few problems.

Silly_Monkey

I just got mine yesterday. I'm willing to be a test monkey so if you guys' have any questions on the unit, let me know. If you have different video samples you'd like me to try, I can do that also. Right now I'm streaming content from a file server to the unit over wired Ethernet.

File server: Shuttle box, 2.4Ghz P4, 1 GB RAM, 320GB HD, Gigabit Ethernet
Switch: NETGEAR GS608 gigabit Ethernet
MX-760HD: 100Mbit Ethernet, connected to TV via DVI to HDMI cable running 1080i

I tried various DVD ISO images with no problem. I was able to FF/RW and chapter skip with no problem. I also tried some various video files encoded in WMV, XVID, DVIX, MPG1, etc. Again, I was able to FF/RW with pretty much no problem, here and there were occasional slight hitches or pauses but nothing major. Might be because the HD on the file server is almost full and needs to be defragmented. Video sources usually took about 3-6 seconds to load.

I didn't check out the music section much yet, just confirmed it will play my MP3's.

On a hunch I loaded a DVD-ROM drive into an external enclosure and connected it to the MX-760HD via USB cable. When I loaded a DVD into the drive it instantly recognized it and started auto playing the movie. The first movie I tried was Bubble (directed by Steven Soderbergh). I then tried a few other movies which didn't work. I then tried one or two movies that I had used DVD Shrink on and burned to DVD+R and those seem to work. So on first appearance it seems the MX-760 either won't play any CSS encrypted content at all, or it will only output it through a 480P connection to the television such as other DVD players do. Since I’m currently connected via 1080i I haven’t been able to test that hypothesis yet.

I connected my laptop to my Linksys router via ethernet cable which in turn is connected to the Mvix via cable as well. I created a divx file for the movie "Elf" using Dr. Divx and attempted to stream it from my laptop. No good. Stuttering play back and audio. Couldn't even get past the first few seconds of the movie. Played some avi files I created using AutoGK and had excellent success. No video or audio dropouts. Looked pretty good too.

It appears for the time being I will have to go avi if I am going to be doing any streaming. I'll have to send an e-mail to Mvix to let them know of my experience.

More information from Mvix support:

-Will this play DVD's that are CSS encrypted, either from an ISO, a VOB, or an external USB DVD player?
1) Yes, the Mvix 760HD is has a CSS certification and is able to play all ISO, VOB files from an external DVD player.

-Will the USB ports on the unit power an external USB hard drive? Or is it designed for the external hard drive to be powered separately?
2) While some external HDDs may not require additional power, others may. It depends on what brand/quality of External HDD (IDE-USB) chipset is being used.

-When you release the firmware that supports the MX-760HD acting as a server/NAS on the network, what type of service will it run? FTP, SMB (windows filesharing), etc.
3) As of our current plans, we plan to incorporate FTP-file transfer capability. FTP is cross-platform and is much reliable.

-Do you ever plan on offering a web interface that allows administration and playback?
4)As of now we do not have any plans of web interface-admin utility. I will forward this suggestion to our implementation team for review and consideration.

-Will you ever release a firmware that supports wireless WPA key encryption? A lot of people use WPA since WEP is an old, insecure technology.
5) We do plan on releasing a beta firmware for WPA support very soon. (Hopefully within next 15-20 days or so).

lol Well, I don't know what to tell you. So far the only problems I've experienced are playing back CSS encrypted content via the file server or from an external USB DVD player. I'm working with tech support on that issue now. Just to be fair, I haven't tried using an installed hard drive or wireless. I'm streaming all media from a file server via 100Mbit Ethernet using the SMB protocol. I know they want you to install NetBEUI, but screw that. Regular SMB over TCP/IP works perfectly and we're not in the 90's anymore.

I can't say that I've tried a USB DVD player, as I don't have one. I rip everything to either my computer, the external hard drive (USB) or the internal hard drive. Keeps my disks from getting all scratched to heck.

The mp3 interface is less than stellar in my opinion, but that might just take a couple firmware tweaks.

I usually just rip DVD's to my file server. But it's nice to sometimes throw in a disc I own (since not all of them are ripped to the server) or a rental. Being able to plug in an external USB player would let me do that with a consistent interface and one less remote control for another stand alone player.

I agree about the Music GUI. It's nothing special and, some improvements could definitely be made.

For the time being I just do what most non-geek people like us do and watch them on our regular DVD player. :)

They should open the source up so we could do some REALLY cool things with it.

Shannonrawls - finally got the chance to try the WMV HD videos fro the SM site - am running 1080i output to a Pioneer PDP437 - and am pleased to say the the output from this unit is great. No problems with stuttering or dropped frames etc on either the 720p or 1080p encoded files. Am still unable to get the networking working! My wife is Japanese and I have a large collection of downloaded Japanese TV/movie files. She doesn't like to watch them on a PC, so I've had to convert them to VCD/DVD for her to watch.

I've had the unit for several weeks, maybe even the first one shipped. but as it was a Christmas present for my wife, I didn't get to try it out until now.

The unit does not recognize the hard drive. Windows detects it, sort of, but can't initialize it or partition it.

I had preloaded a new 320GB drive, but when I put it in the unit, no media files displayed. Connected it to Windows, and Windows thought it was a brand new, uninitialized, unpartitioned disk. I wiped the disk, but same issue. I've tried two different drives, two computers, different drive jumper settings but no help.

I have connected an external DVD drive and it recognizes and plays the media files I have stored on CD/DVD. It does not recognize a flash drive. I've tried Xvid and Divx 6. I haven't tried any HD content yet, nor do I have HDTV for it, perhaps in the future. I'm also going to try H264 encodes to see what happens.
Ticket has been submitted to MVIXUsa
Firmware is 0.2.61108.

Update: 12/28/06. Found cause. Bad IDE cable. Put one of my spare cables on. Works as advertised. Now to get them to send a replacement that fits in the case.

I'm glad I didn't read this thread before I bought this unit. I got mine today and so far it's great. It was easy to setup. It does exactly what I want it to do. I have wireless working with WEP encryption and it seems to easily stream XVID content across the network - no glitches. My MP3's play fine and my pictures display as well. I am not having any problems at all with network sharing. I can see all my network shares on my Media Server (XP pro box). I can even see the network share from my drive attached to my router through SMB (Samba).

I haven't tried DVD content or HD content. I'm not too interested in DVD playback through this box, but I have plenty of HD in the form of .ts files, I can play with. I'm actually only using the composite video right now, since I'm using the device to bridge to my network from my bedroom. I only have a SD TV in that room. So maybe my expectations are low, but the device is easily worth the money I payed for it.

I bought this unit and immediately tested some .ts files I captured straight from my hdtv cable box. To my amazement it played them flawlessly.

I then tried some archived .ts files I downloaded and had to rejoin or extract. I used null packet stripper to rejoin the split .ts files.

Upon playback on this unit, they suffered from a dropped frame stutter every 5-10 min. And to my absolute horror all of them reset about 45 min into the movie (maybe 4gb) and started playing from the beginning. The unit then is unresponsive to any remote or faceplate button commands. I have to pull the plug to turn it off. I tried these same movies on a different HDD and had the same problems.

These files are from 5-20gb in size so I am curious to know if there is a file size limitation. I know it states in the manual that some avi files encoded with virtual dub were limited to 2gb. I wouldn't consider any of this much a problem if there was a seamless playback of sequential split movie files.

Another issue supposedly addressed by the latest firmware is choppy playback after trying to forward or rewind video files. Yet sound still ends up garbled and choppy after a short rewind or forward during playback of any .ts files.

I am considering sending the unit back for a refund as playback of HD level .ts files were the primary reason of purchase. Can anyone suggest an alternative to this unit that can playback .ts and maybe h264 files (unlike the mvixHD)? It would be nice if it could stream from a USB host as well... I love that feature.

I picked this unit up last week, I slapped an 80Gb drive in that I had laying around with a few ripped dvd folders and some random avi's and the firmware update file. The first thing that I did when I set it up was to update the firmware to the latest version.

I have it plugged into a 100BT network through a Netgear FS108 switch to a port on a Netgear WGR614v4, I have shared folders for video and audio on a win XP Pro machine also plugged into the router. I pressed "refresh" under the "Mixed" tab and the Mvix unit had no problems seeing any of the shared folders, and even picked up folders shared on my daughters machine (also plugged into the switch).

I was able to play video from both the local HDD and the networked shares without any stuttering that I noticed. Let me qualify that a bit, there were issues with playing .IFO's in the VIDEO_TS folders, it would reject the file and also any .VOB that I attempted to play after that and would become unresponsive, forcing me to pull the power to reset. I could play main movie .VOB's by selecting them and playing, but there was a pause as it read each new file. This is different from what the manual and from what I've found in other forums, maybe they broke something in this firmware build for that.

If I created .ISOs from a dvd, those would play flawlessly, chapter jumping back and forth, FF & REV ... no problem. I havent toyed with music files at all yet, still working on the video. I was able to browse through some still pictures though and that seemed fine, though I didn't set up a slideshow yet.

I've tried both the Y/Pb/Pr and the DVI outputs at 720p and have noticed no flaws, it all looks pretty good. The upsampling from non-HD dvd files to 720p looks great IMHO, I'm pretty happy with that so far. I dont have any experience with capturing transport streams such as sixtyhurts has, so I can't check that out.

They need to fix the folder based playback again, and the menu looks a bit primitive. I'd love to see a more user friendly configuration there, the ability to use cover pix for entries (both video & audio) would be excellent along with a good search feature. I guess we'll have to watch for the next update.

Hmmm, the 1.0.9 firmware isn't on the mvixusa.com site. Maybe because there all at CES? I'd like to get a changelog for 1.0.9

I have the same problem and reported it. I'm betting the issue is with the multiplexing of downloaded transport streams. They are typically edited with transport stream editing tools that don't remultiplex the streams correctly. I see the exact same problems on the Mvix as I do when I send downloaded streams to my Mitsubishi firewire TV... Periodic video glitches as the TV waits on the matching audio packets to show up.

When I have some time, I'm going to rip a downloaded TS apart, and properly remux the stream. MP2TSMS creates properly muxed ATSC streams (placing the audio far enough ahead of the video to avoid the glitches) but it is very pricey.

VLC can also remux transport streams. Deep in the bowels of VLC, it has options that might be able to replicate the process of moving the audio ahead of the video, however I'm not sure what to dink with. It has the advantage of being a one step process though.

BTW, I'm not talking about audio sync, just audio packet placement.

I have successfully installed firmware 1.0.9 and have discovered that all of the issues are still a problem.

The .ts file still resets about 40-45 min into the video and starts playing from the beginning.

The frame drop stutter every 5-10 min is still apparent.

And instead of garbled/choppy sound when attempting to rewind and forward it now will freeze up and remain unresponsive to play/rew/and fw commands. I have to press stop, go back to recently played files and play the file again to resume playback. (Although the sound sometimes does still garble or stop altogether)

I am happy to know that MVIX is working to address these issues but it sincerely worries me that the last 2 firmware updates did little to fix these problems with the playback of .ts files.

I downloaded firmware 1.0.9 and was was able to flash it no problem. I'm happy I was able to install a 500Gb drive I had laying around and it recognized it with no issues. The drive is even formatted NTFS. I did try some VOB files I had trouble with before. This firmware seemed to help. I also tried component to my Dell 24" LCD. It looks great. Still haven't played with any HiDef, so I'm following this thread with interest.

Thanks for the help Squire, that is a great place to host files.

I managed to upload a couple .ts files that show the frame drop stutter, but it seems that I can't reproduce the audio glitches or the video reset in midstream with these smaller samples. (I joined the two sample .ts files in the exact place of the reset on the full movie)

It appears that around 4gb into the .ts is when it resets to the start of the video. So I'll have to upload a 5gb sample file for the devs. Mediafire seems to ignore the 5gb file I attempt to upload. Maybe I'll send them a dvd if all else fails.

With 1.0.9 installed, the flawless playback is now replaced by the infamous dropped frame stutter problem. And the Null Packet Stripper joined .ts files have a much worse stutter than with the default 1.0.0 firmware.

Hi Guys,

just two questions. I don´t have the device but would like to get it.

Is it possible to rotate pictures while watching and does the device play m3u-playlists? I would like to use the device mainly as mp3 and photo storage and playback.

When watchin movies they will be .iso,.avi files and some divx, I believe they should work.

So if m3u and rotating of pictures is okay. I will go for it.

I just tested an m3u playlist and it works great. I'm not sure about rotating pictures. Right now the image viewer feature doesn't seem that great.

Isos and avi files should be no problem tho.

Anyone using this unit to stream DVD .ifo or .iso from an Infrant ReadyNAS?

I've got a Zensonic Z500 and Helios X3000 and they either suck at this (Z500 doesn't play half my films) or simply don't support it (X3000).

I am looking for rock solid reliability of .ifo and .iso ...getting ready to revert back to HTPC to get this experience, but I am still holding out hope for the Z500 1.6 firmware that is to be released end of the month.

Unfortunately, the Mvix designers used a the EM8621L and not the EM8623L, the 21L doesn't support H.264 decoding.

Check the sigma designs site for the EM8620L Series and look at the back of the product brochure (I can't post a link here yet until I post a few more times).

It looks like these are pin compatible though ... I wonder if they could be swapped if they were available (reasonably)? or maybe they'll offer an upgrade later if enough folks scream for it.

Is your router set to WPA only encryption? That won't work. ;-( It only does WEP.

There are also detailed instuctions on the firware download page for using manual addressing (instead of DHCP) via wireless to get around a problem with some routers.

Folks, a quick question from an absolute n00b here...some of the posts in this thread indicate that you can network the MX-760HD but I've had no luck doing so, and wireless isn't an option for me.

My network is pretty simple, a Netgear TA612V router providing DHCP, through a Netgear GS116 gigabit switch out to Cat5e cabling. The MX-760HD is picking up 192.168.61.5 assigned from the router, I can ping the unit from my laptop, but nothing after that.

I tried an email to the nonus support and got the following quick reply

hi..
um.. now. this function is not supported...
pc connect to mx760hd is impossible...
so.. we are working add ftp function.. so.. next time is possible.. but, need wait.. ^^
it is no trouble... understand it?

Chatham -

Unless you use the firmware that antivirus has built up (or built yourself) I don't think that you can get 'into' the 760 from another system, yet. The Mvix folks have stated that there will be those abilities in a "later firmware update".

With the current Mvix firmware, networking the unit will only get you access to network shared drives/folders FROM the 760, that is, you should be able to see them right away with the setup that you mentioned. My setup is similar to yours, and I was able to read from every share on my net immediately.

Not trying to be snotty here, but the TVIX M4000, also built on the uCLinux kernel, has FTP available. I think this makes it pretty certain that the MVix will be able to do it as well, since they have the same processing power. I'm under the impression that he MVix only uses IPX/SPX networking protocol, and I am not sure whether this is an impediment to implementing FTP.

As an aside, the FTP on the TVIX is a little skitchy. I've been fine using a console-based FTP client, but it doesn't love all incoming multithreaded GUI FTP clients, has some tendency to hang, and sometimes you need to do a CHKDSK while the disk is USB connected periodically to clean up minor errors from deleting files. Don't know if you can expect the same from MVix.

G'day All,

I got my 760HD two days ago and immediately upgraded it to Firmware version 1.1.15.

So far my thoughts on the unit are quite good. The physical design of the unit is great but the interface still needs some work. With MviX releasing 3 firmware updates in less than a month for the unit I am confident that the 760HD will come up to scratch in the not too distant future.

Issues/Recommendations
==================
* Requires WLAN/LAN access to the unit to copy files (supposedly future release)
* Needs a screensaver to prevent burn-in on my plasma !
* Needs a proper MP3 player
* The MP3 play function needs a lot of improvement. If you browse to a folder and press "Play" it only plays the one song. It should operate like an iPod in the way you browse, hit Play and it plays all the songs in the folder. The whole jukebox thing is too confusing!
* ID3 Tag support needed
* Album cover support
* A few bugs still in Rew/FF of videos, system hangs
* Refresh bug in the media list, if I stream from my PC and then later disconnect the WLAN/LAN it still shows the shared folders in the list. If you try to access them you get and access error. Rightly so too, but if you refresh it should see the shared folder no longer exists and remove it from the media list.

I think they are all my concerns right now.

Apart from those all is good so far.

@Antivirus, in regards to your firmware, is it reversible? Can I overwrite yours with future releases of MviX firmware?

Cheers,

Anyone run in to a problem like this?

Made an .iso file of a DVD... tried playing it through wireless (to no avail) it just stuttered. So I copied to my mvix hard drive (7200rom, ata-133 etc..) and now when i click on the SAME exact file i tried to stream, it just hangs...

anyone see that before?

* The MP3 play function needs a lot of improvement. If you browse to a folder and press "Play" it only plays the one song. It should operate like an iPod in the way you browse, hit Play and it plays all the songs in the folder. The whole jukebox thing is too confusing!

OK, the manual says it works this way and after a bit more playing around it does seem to work. But one thing I have noticed is if I hit NEXT or PREV it does not go to the next song.

I just tried this again too after power cycling the unit for a 2nd time and now it works. Maybe its intermittent??

I've found a way around it (a bit painful),start playing, then hit the jukebox button. You should be able to skip through the folder. Ohhh and the left and right buttons can do the previous and skip so dont press them unless u plan to.

My biggest issue with the audio playback is the fast forward doesn't work, which is rather sucky because i have a few really long single file audio files.

Hello, I have a pretty important question which I can't even get answered directly from the manufacturer (which i think is a little more than odd)

Does the player support playing Xvid QPEL (quarter pixel) files? I know most standalones (in general) do not support QPEL files, but I was hoping that by now a player would support these files. Any response would be of great help. I have a couple of TV series encoded in Xvid QPEL and I wouldn't want to buy the player if I can't even watch them :p

to maltice and sixtyhurts: please check ur private message box. I have posted a link to a torrent file that supposedly is encoded with QPEL. Hopefully it really is encoded with QPEL, or it would be kinda misleading. I wanted to post the link, but AVS forum has put me on a temporary probation and won't permit me to post links until i have posted 5 times :p

interesting.... the manufacturer finally got back to me (well at least customer support did), and they said that it doesn't support QPEL and possibly future firmware might... do you think they were brushing me off? or maybe the torrent file wasn't really a QPEL :( ... *sigh*... this matter really does decide if i will buy one or not...

Right now I have the Mediagate MG-35. Works decently well, with the exception that it doesnt play Xvid QPEL files...

Hi all,

Just received my 760. I installed a Maxtor 500GB drive. I hooked it up to my Mac via USB and used Disk Utility to format the drive per the instructions on the Mvix site. 3 MS-DOS partitions.

I then copied some xvid and mp3 files to the partitions - along with a copy of the latest firmware, unzipped.

I fired up the 760 while hooked up to the TV - and the player won't see any of the files under any of the categories. The setup will also not see the firmware.

Any ideas what I can do? I know the jumper setting is correct on the drive - and the 760 appears to be functioning properly - it just can't see the drive for some reason?

Any help would be great.

Thanks,

Jerremy

Installed Protocolls: TCP/IP, NWLINK

I don't actually own a 760, but I looked through the manual. I recall it said something about installing NetBEUI or some other NetBIOS Windows component if you were having problems after installing IPX/SPX (NWLINK). Check the manual online-- it may be more updated than printed materials.

I'd also maybe consider trying to debug using a laptop configured with NWLINK but not TCP/IP. It would give you a bit more information than sniffing.

I got the MX-760 a few days ago. It's tremendous. I had a little trouble getting the shares on one of my computers to show up, but I did get it eventually. Here's some stuff that might help you, touch772:

You do NOT need NWLINK/IPX/SPX. What I had to do (aside from enable the guest account) was allow Guest to log in remotely. To do that, go
start>run>gpedit.msc
Then go to Computer Configuration>Windows Settings>Security Settings>Local Policies>User Rights Assignment
Select "Deny access to this computer from the network" and remove Guest from that.

If you don't have XP pro, then you don't have gpedit.msc which presents a problem. Perhaps if someone sent it to you and you dropped it in your System32 folder it would work, or perhaps not.

cpete

Interesting. My host is an XP Pro machine and I didn't have to do what "Wuggles" described. I did enable the NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBios Compatible Transport Protocol as described in the manual. Once I did that, all the shares worked fine. I don't set up any special user accounts either.

Do you have the following network stacks under network properties?

NWLink NetBIOS
NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol

edit: Wuggles - I now realize you're right. I am picking up other Windows Network shares that do not have this stack enabled. I am presuming this is only necessary if you have "older" Windows machines on the network that you want to share directories with. Not sure why anyone cares about W95/ME or Win NT anymore though.

Chris

Wuggles
02-01-07, 06:25 PM
Nope. What I imagine they did, which was a smart thing, is they included support for NW (NetBIOS over NW?), standard windows shares (NetBIOS over TCP, or is it something else now?), and I believe Samba works too, for the linux guys. Theoretically, it should work with a windows machine out of the box (as it did for some of the computers on my network). If that doesn't work, you go on and install NW as they told you to, in hopes that it will work. Unfortunately, whichever protocol you use will still require authorization, which will fail if windows is denying remote access for guest. What they should have done was allow you to enter a username and password to access shares so this isn't a problem (and because I hate having my guest account open, and network accessable). Or even better, allow the box to function as NAS (Firmware update pretty pretty please?).

cpete
02-01-07, 06:34 PM
A different question. Does this box support lossless WMA? I just tried and it didn't work. When I tried to play an album, it just skipped each track to the end. I don't have any problems with MP3's.

Chris

Wuggles
02-01-07, 08:12 PM
I can confirm that, no lossless WMA. For that matter, it doesn't seem that WMV8 works either. My WMV9's play fine though.

Oh and by the way, there appears to be a limit on the length of your share names. Up to 7 characters certainly works, perhaps even 8 does. But I just spent the last hour trying to figure out why my share I called "Movies on Virlomi" wouldn't show up, and finally figured it out.

cpete
02-01-07, 08:48 PM
You got my curiosity going. I just did a capture and see that browsing network drives on the MX-760HD is being done with SMB over NetBios over TCP. NetBios is a common transport for SMB in the Microsoft world. There is no IPX/SPX (NetWare) traffic going on.

There is no real streaming going on either, in the conventional sense. If it were "true" streaming, you would see RTSP (Real-Time Streaming-Protocol) or RTSP tunneled over HTTP. The box is simply using SMB to transfer files across the network to the MX-760HD. It doesn't really matter, it works fine either way. True streaming is just a better use of network bandwidth as it becomes more saturated.

Share names can't be over 12 characters using NetBios.

Sorry, can't help on the last two questions, I've only used the standard remote. But the Logitech Harmony setup software knows about the Mvix MV-4000 and MV-5000, and you wouldn't expect the company to make products that different... It works to some degree. I have no problem accessing a drive hanging off my Linksys WRT350N router. This router allows you to hang a USB drive off of it and access it with Windows Sharing or by FTP. The router is running Linux. I presume it uses Samba for Network shares. I have a Linux FC5 box as well on the network and tried to set up Samba shares on it. The MX-760HD did recognize the CD and DVD drive off that machine. But it seemed to be cached information and then the share went away. I wasn't able to get any further with that - but I'm not an expert at Samba shares on Linux boxes, so perhaps I need to do something else to get it to work.

Hope that helps some.

Just tried some .ts files I had. It plays. A couple problems though. One, as expected, wireless speeds cannot keep up. The picture looks great, but I get continuous audio breakups. Two, there is a noticable time delay from going to one .ts file to the next. The content I have breaks .ts files into 144mb chunks. I expect the wired connection to solve the first problem, but I'm not sure about the second.

I know I'm doing things kind of backwards here, but I'm actually using this device on my bedroom TV which is SD. I'm using composite and analog audio. It's really nice that this device down-converts all content as well as upconverts. It eliminates the need to have a computer in this room. Nice! Someday I'll upgrade, but for now it's a great solution to get access to all my media.

Next step, add wired ethernet to the mix.

Hi all, thanks for all the ongoing comments, this is a steep learning curve for me.

I'm having trouble getting the MX-760HD to see a shared directory on my laptop. I've got a similar setup to cpete, with share permissions enabled, appropriate protocols installed as per the manual and the advices posted here, and even run gpedit.msc to remove the guest restriction, but I can't see the "shared" Dowload directory on this lappy's HDD.

My router shows the MX as an "attached device" can ping it 192.168.61.5, but no luck :(

Anyone have any further things I can try, TIA.

There's no need for a Windows computer _at all_ for using the MX-760HD. I don't know why they post those silly requirements. The MX-760HD works fine with Linux and I don't why not as well with Mac. It saw my Samba shares and play the content fine. I was able to format the 500GB drive they shipped me with it just fine under Linux as FAT32.

Chatham, if you could download Wireshark (formerly Ethereal) and capture the traffic between the MX-760 and your laptop, save it, and put it somewhere where we (I?) can download it, we might be able to gain some insight into the problem.

cpete
02-02-07, 09:25 PM
chatham,

If you're going wireless like I am, I have noticed the connection getting lost at times. You can tell if the field under Wireless Setup (Wireless Apply) says "failed". When that happens, I loose some shares. It's easily fixed by pressing that function until it connects. At that point it says "success".

Then if you refresh, you will see the shares displayed again.

If you're going wired then it's probably something else.

Yes, an Ethereal trace would help, if nothing else works. Btw, I have access to some other "sniffers" in case Ethereal doesn't cut it (but it should).

I connect via Samba. 10/100/1000 network.

I had trouble stuttering with the Tvix originally. Then I changed plugging it in via a Netgear 10/100/1000 switch to plugging it in via a Dell switch. Problem seems to have gone away. Could be some auto-negotiation issue with the Netgear, it's not unheard of... If you have another switch, you might try it...

misko is right. You shouldn't see any stuttering related to SMB networking (even with the broken Sigma Designs SMB routines) with "only" 480i/480p material. The poor implementation only rears up when trying to get HDTV (720p/1080i) transfer rates. If you see stuttering on SD material, you should examine your LAN's throughput more thoroughly for a bottleneck.

The package contains the cross-compilation toolchain, along with a 2.4 uClinux
kernel, supporting tools to produce a usable root file system for the embedded
system, and a host of supporting tools and drivers, including wireless drivers,
remote control tools, front-panel support, etc.

SDK Configuration
+++++++++++++++++

1) The SDK comes with a default configuration. The first step to start building
your environment is to run 'make config'
2) As you run each step, make tells what you can run next, and what
alternatives you have.
3) At any time, you can invoke 'make' by itself, and it will let you know the
details of the build process and of the configuration you chose. For example:

workstation> make

SDK : 8620L Envision
rootfs Targets : busybox ext2root
kernel version : 2.4.22-mambo
Linux Mambo Config : envision8620L_romfs_rom

make config : configure toolchain and system options
make download : download the open source packages to 'sources/dl'
make toolchain : build and install the toolchain in '/home/me/armutils/toolchain'
make linuxconfig : change the Linux kernel options
make linux : build the Linux kernel image kernel-2.4.22-envision-EM8620L-romfs.bin
make rootfs : build and generate the root file system rootfs-envision-EM8620L-romfs.ext2
make romfs : build and generate the ROM file system romfs-envision-EM8620L-romfs.bin
make isofs : build and generate the ISO file system isofs-envision-EM8620L-romfs.iso

Invoking 'make config' brings up a menu based configuration. The details of the
configuration option are given in a separate document to which you should refer:
EM86xx_ARMutils_new_process.pdf on https://developer.sigmadesigns.com in the
'86xx ARM Utilities' folder.

Downloading the packages
++++++++++++++++++++++++

'make download' will download all the packages you need from the Sigma Designs
FTP site.

Packages are downloaded into sources/dl

You need not download the packages more than once.

Generating a cross-compiler set
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

You can change the directory into which the toolchain will be installed by
changing the value of the 'Installation path' option when you 'make config'.
The default value is 'toolchain' under the current directory.

'make toolchain' will generate actually generate the toolchain into the
specified directory.

Note that you can decide to use an existing toolchain instead of building
your own (this makes sense when there is one shared toolchain for a whole
engineering team for example). In this case, the same path must point to
the location of the existing toolchain.

The 'make toolchain' step is still required, in order to test the sanity
of the existing toolchain.

uClibc comes with a default configuration that Sigma Designs deems adapted for
most development and production configurations. If you want to to configure
uClibc, 'make uclibc-config' before you 'make toolchain'. Of course, you have
this option only when you build a fresh toolchain.

The ccache utility, the compiler cache, is also installed. The default cache
directory is 'cache' under the current directory.

After you have build your new toolchain, add it to your PATH by sourcing the
environment file 'path.sh' which sits in the ARM utilities directory. This step
is required if you want to build the Sigma Designs drivers in the MRUA package
or the file player in the RMF86 package.

Once your toolchain is built you should not have to rebuild it again. See use
scenarios below.

Building the system
+++++++++++++++++++

You build your system in three steps: compiling the kernel with 'make linux'
(with optionaly configuring it beforehand with make 'linuxconfig'), building
the root file system with 'make rootfs' and assembling a ROM file system
to flash on the board with 'make romfs'.

The order in which the next targets will be built depends on the location of
the file system (ROM, NFS, initrd). In any case, you want to build the kernel
and you actually want to build it as early as possible.

If the system is booting from ROM, you want to have your kernel embedded into
the ROMFS, so that you will run 'make romfs' at some point _after_ running
'make linux'

If the file system if going to sit in ROM, it will also be embedded, as is,
into the ROMFS, so that it must be built before 'make romfs'. On the other
hand, if the root file system is going to be in an initrd, it will actually
be embedded in the kernel so that you must 'make rootfs' before you 'make
linux'. Finally, if the root file system is accessed from NFS, it has no
relation to assembling the ROMFS and you can 'make rootfs' last.

Generating a kernel binary
++++++++++++++++++++++++++

'make config' determines which basic configuration is selected for your kernel,
based on what chip, board, boot location and root file system location you are
choosing.

After that, 'make linuxconfig' lets you customize the canned linux configuration.
You might want to save your customized configuration to a file so that you can
quickly reload it, if necessary.

'make linux' will generate a bin image of the kernel in the bin directory

If booting from a hard disk, use idewimage to install the kernel bin image
in the first partition of your hard disk:
idewimage --kernel <your_kernel_image> /dev/hde1

Kernel modules are supported. They are installed into
/lib/modules/kernel-<YourVersion>/ on the root file system. A modules.dep file
is generated and modprobe is supported on the target system.

Generating a disk filesystem
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

'make rootfs' will generate a file system image in the bin directory.

This file system is completely based on Busybox. You can choose to
customize the Busybox configuration before you build it. This is
achieved by running 'make busybox-config'.

If you are using a hard drive for the root filesystem, copy it to the right
partition : dd if=bin/rootfs-envision-EM8620L-romfs.ext2 of=/dev/hde3.

You will likely want to customize your root file system in various ways.
You might want to add or change some startup scripts or you might want to add
some of your own applications or drivers, etc. In order to do so, select the
'Root file system customization' option in 'make config' and copy all the files
you want to include in your custom root file system to their rightful directory
under 'config/rootfs/root'. For example, if you want your own application 'acme'
to appear under '/usr/bin' on the target system, you would copy it to
'config/rootfs/root/usr/bin' before you 'make rootfs'.

Generating a rom filesystem
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

'make romfs' will generate a ROM file system image in the bin directory.
This file system include the compressed linux kernel in the root directory.
The image is ready to be flashed on the parallel flash of the Envision board.

It is important to realize that the ROM file system and the root file system
are two distinct elements of your system, that may, in certain cases, be the
same.

The root file system is where the kernel expects to find its basic set of
running files (the 'init' executable, the 'etc' configuration directory, the
'/lib/modules/' modules directory, etc.). On the other hand, the ROM file
system is what sits on the parallel flash, and in which the boot loader expects
(in most cases) to find the linux kernel and a few other files (e.g. the
supporting files for the splash screen feature). If the kernel expects to
find the root file system on the ROM file system, then they are one and the
same. Conversely, if the kernel expects to find its root file system over NFS,
or in a RAM disk, then they are distinct.

Thus, there is a separate option to customize the ROM file system. If there are
custom files that you feel must appear in the ROM file system, select the
'ROM file system customization' option in 'make config' and copy the files to
the right directory under 'config/romfs/root'.

The most common use case would be to support the splash screen. In that case,
please copy the 'bitmap.bin', 'vsyncparam.bin' and 'irqhandler.bin' files to
'config/romfs/root' and enable the option in 'make config' and you will be able
to produce a ROM file system with the required files in it.

Tips and Tricks
+++++++++++++++

To change configuration, use 'make configclean'. *Beware*: your linux
kernel configuration will be overwritten. You have two other cleaning
targets available: 'make clean' will do a pretty thorough cleaning
of the directory. In particular it will clean away the toolchain.
'make superclean' cleans the directory of all files that were created
during the build process (except for your custom files, of course).
In particular, it will require you to download the tarballs again.

To enable syslogd and klogd, you have to modify the kernel config (make
linuxconfig) and select 'Unix domain sockets' in 'Networking options'.

If you have problem with free memory, you can adjust the minimum free memory
in the linux config: In 'Sigma Designs patches', change 'Minimum free memory
(KB)' (default is 3072, you can put 4096). As a general note, please remember
that due to the limitations of the ARM chip (namely the absence of an MMU),
memory allocation is a very touchy subject which will turn out to be grossly
inefficient, either in terms of wasted memory, or in terms of wasted time.
In any case, be prepared to whip up your own memory manager and minimize calls
to malloc in your applications.

Wifi support
++++++++++++

There is support for wifi drivers for either the Prism54 chip or the Atheros.
In order to enable wifi support, go to the 'Wifi support' menu in 'make config'.
There, select the 'Enable wifi support' option. This will let three more
options appear. You can then choose to build the Prism54 driver and/or the
Atheros driver (they are not exclusive in that both drivers can sit on the
root file system. Choosing which one to 'modprobe' is still up to you).

We recommand you choose to build the wtools (include the 'iwconfig' utility) in
order to be able to configure the wifi extensions of your (wireless) ethernet
adapter.

Network configuration script
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In order to set up your ethernet interface (should you have one present on
your target platform), a script is typically run at startup, which will
'modprobe' the right drivers and 'ifconfig' the network interface.

We offer a canned script which will take care of all this for you, provided
you give it some basic information. If you did not select 'Enable wifi support'
under 'Wifi support', then the script will attempt to set up a regular ethernet
device. Conversely, if you did select the 'Enable wifi support' option, the
script will attempt to set up a wifi device.

If you have specific needs, such as supporting more than one driver, or
requesting a dynamic IP address, then we recommand to disable the use of
the pre-canned script altogether (deselect option 'Include a network
configuration script' in 'make config') and write your own, that you will
copy under 'config/rootfs/root/etc/init.d'.

Example: you want to use a dhcp client to get a dyanmically assigned IP
address for your Atheros wifi board. Well, lucky you, 'udhcpc' is included
by default with BusyBox.

Edit 'config/rootfs/root/etc/init.d/S30network' (the name is just an example;
just make sure you respect the Sxx... convention):

#!/bin/sh
modprobe madwifi
iwconfig ath0 essid YOUR_ESSID key YOUR_WEP_KEY
udhcpc -n -q

Make sure your script is executable. And voila!

I tried wired ethernet and ran into the exact same problem I was having with wireless. I got constant audio stuttering. The picture looks good, with no breakups, but it goes a little slow and doesn't synch even with the garbled audio. I run a Gig network and have several Gig and 10/100 switches on the network. In this case I was going through 2 Gig switches.

OTOH, I was happy when I copied the same High Def material onto the hard drive and it played perfectly. There is still the noticable delay going from one .ts file to the next. There seems to be no buffering going on, which is too bad. If MVIX doesn't provide a solution to that problem, I may have to look into those tools that edit .ts files.

The poor implementation only rears up when trying to get HDTV (720p/1080i) transfer rates.

That's for sure. The poor implementation of what? SMB? I definately don't have a problem playing DIVX and DVD rips wireless or wired. I know from past experience that 100Mb is fine for playing HiDef material across SMB on XP class machines.

Thanks,
John

actually, I'm having the same problem. My guess is that something in the smb protocols got changed, because my xbox completely flips out when I even try to browse the network when the vista computer is connected.

so yeah, any ideas anyone else has would be appreciated (also sorry for the thread-jacking away from remotes :x )

Well, I tried my Logitech Harmony 880 configured as an Mvix MV-5000 media center PC. The Logitech was able to control the Mvix without too many issues. It appeared that the FF/Rew buttons were not configured, or the skip chapter buttons, but all other buttons I tested worked fine.

IR remotes are nasty things. Someone who knows more about lirc (I think that's it name) might be able to tell me if you can use it to decode the streams, but I don't believe that the Logitech software will give me much detail.

Anyway, bottom line is a universal remote can be used with a Mvix.

Certainly lots of complaints in chat rooms about file sharing, but a few people seem to get it to work, at least XP Pro to/from Vista.

Might look at this:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/e20e6875-7210-47bb-bf19-5c60e6ae86151033.mspx

Also found this on an Aussie web site:
check everything in your Vista's 'Network and Sharing Centre' is accessible from XP. e.g. turn 'Network Discovery' on, 'File Sharing' on and 'Password Protected' sharing off.

Now make sure both computers are on the same workgroup. Go into the control panel, 'System', and where it says 'Computer name, domain and workgroup settings' check that the workgroup is the same as the XP machines. If it isn't, make them the same. This will require a restart.

In XP, make sure that File Sharing is active. If you're not sure, go into the network setup wizard and set it up so it is. Try disabling Windows Firewall if you have to.

There is a new flavor of SMB called SMB2 starting with Vista. There are significant changes. I'm not sure if this is the issue though. I'm am sure that Vista can talk the old SMB. I don't know if there's a setting, or if it automatically detects it.

I've already gotten Vista<-->XP to work. It's getting this retarded thing to recognize vista that is annoying me. I'm still playing around with it, so I'll post if I figure anything out.

cpete: smb2 is probably the source of the problem, and no one really has enough experience with it yet to figure out a work-around

I filed an issue with MVIX on the audio stuttering problem over the network with HD material. Here is the response.

Thanks for your email. The audio stuttering of .ts files over the network is likely caused by the fact that in some .ts files, the audio and video are encoded at such a high quality that there is not enough bandwidth to properly transmit the information from the computer to the Mvix. If your HDTV tuner card allows it, try lowering the bitrate on audio.

If that is not possible or doesn't work, I'd advise trying to convert them .ts files to .avi. Instructions on how to do that can be found here: http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/dtv2avi.html

If those don't work, let me know.

Have a good day!

My response -

I'm not completely buying into that explanation. I have used Windows File Sharing (SMB) between XP computers on my network with the same files and not had a problem playing back on my HDTV card. That implies the network bandwidth is sufficient to transport the stream. Your suggestions seem fine for a work-around, but I think there's definitely something going on in the box that's fixable.

Are you sure its not a problem with the devolo plugs that you are using? I seem to remember that most sites seemed to imply that whilst homeplug is fine for audio, video (especially hidef) left a little to be desired. Just food for thought.

I've done the tests, over Devolo 200mb Av plug powerline, also straight into Maxtor Shared storage II Nas with Cross over, etc etc still stutters over samba, so I thought could it be my NAS? , surely not, but I did a test on my Mac book laptop to the same public shares mounting the iso from the share, opened the dvd player up on the mac and did it over the same powerline adapters and it worked a dream over samba, very good indeed.

So I think more people are happier on this thread than the tvix thread about playing DVD content [iso] via samba, so may need to buy the mvix and hope thats better, am I assuming correctly here ???????

Thank you all in advance

Hi guys, I had a question about the different video outputs.

Does it automatically detect which outputs to use when outputting to a tv (DVI,component, or rca) or does it have to be selected in the settings?

The reason I am asking this is because I change back and forth from an HDTV to a standard tv that uses RCA. And if i have the outputs selected are DVI or component, and player doesn't automatically detect, I would have to change the settings first before bringing it to a TV that uses only RCA.

Obviously a regular TV does not use DVI or Component, so then this is where i would run into a problem. If the options were pre-selected as dvi or component, I wouldn't be able to change it to RCA unless I did it FIRST on a tv that was capable of letting me see the menu to change the settings.

I hope this doesn't sound confusing.

Right now I have a mediagate mg-35. At home I use it on component cables. When I go to a friends house I would have to use the RCA output. But if i forgot to change it to RCA before i went to thier house, I'm pretty much screwed, cuz it is outputting through component and in order to access/see the menu on the screen, i have to have a source that can view through component before i can change it back to rca.

The remote has a single button for cycling between output modes. It doesn't auto detect in any usable manner.

What I would like to see is the ability to select which modes you want to cylce through... or better yet "direct to mode" IR commands to put in my Harmony remote.

Guys ,
I would like to buy an MVIX-760 but I have hundreds of Gigs of FLAC format .
I really don't understand why MVIX that uses the same Sigma chip as TVIX cannot include a FLAC format . As you know TVIX- 4000 does support FLAC without any problem .
I've contacted the MVIXUSA support and it looks like thay don't know about the fact that the Sigma 8621 chip does support FLAC :

"Hi...
um... it need supported chip... but, sigma 8621 chip is not supported flac... so.. it is impossible..
but, if sigma modify sdk... so.. it possible supported it.. we'll try it... ^^
sorry... not enough answer.. ^^;
thanks..
"
So MVIX = no FLAC , no usable wireless streaming , no TS for now , no FTP for 330 bucks !!!!
and
TVIX = yes FLAC , not included wireless streaming , yes TS , yes FTP for 249 bucks !!!!

The option of wireless streaming is a very nice to have option but lets face it - it looks like TVIX-4000 has a better file support and a better understanding than MVIX .

Turn on your Mvix and press SETUP on your remote or unit
Navigate to the MISC option in the SETUP menu of your Mvix.
Select the Firmware Upgrade option
Navigate to the internal HDD in your Mvix or USB memory stick containing the firmware update file. PLEASE NOTE: Do not upgrade the firmware via your network shared folders, as a loss in connection to the network could cause a break in the firmware upgrade process.
Once you have located the file, highlight the file and press ENTER on your remote to begin the upgrade process

** CAUTION: DO NOT POWER-OFF THE MVIX DURING THE FIRMWARE UPGRADE PROCESS **

Firmware upgrades can cause the wireless function to stop functioning on some routers. The solution to this is to manually enter the correct addresses in the setup screen. You will need to note the IP address assigned to your MX-760HD, your router's IP address and your subnet mask. Please refer to your router's user manual for more details on these addresses.

To access the network setup screen, follow these steps:

1) Turn on your MX-760HD
2) Press "Setup" on your remote
3) Scroll down to "Network"
4) Scroll over to "Address Setup" and select "Manual"
5) Enter in the addresses below

IP Address: IP address is the address assigned to your MX-760HD by the router. Open your router setup, Open DHCP Client List, and look for an IP address with no name next to it.

Netmask: Your subnet mask can be found in the router setup. It is usually 255.255.255.0.

Gateway: To access your router, you will need to know the IP address for the router (usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1). This is the address you will enter as the gateway address.

6) Select "Wireless Apply"
7) Repeat this several times until it reads "Success"

Please refer to your routers manual for help finding these addresses and setting up the IP address for your MX-760HD. If you need further help with network setup, please refer to this article:

I have read this thread with great interest. I initially was going to get only something to stream music to my home stereo, but i figured why not go all the way? My only concern is the rather bare bones manner of handling of audio files. I want to be able to play all my music files randomly, but from what I've read from the user's manual, one must put files ONE AT A TIME into the jukebox playlist! That just will not do! Is their a way to add all the files and play them randomly? Also, are there any plans to recognize ID3 tags? Any help you could provide would be great. Thanks.

If all of your MP3s happen to be in the same folder, all you have to do is press Play (NOT enter!) and it will play all of them. Press the rnd/seq button if necessary to put it on shuffle. If your music is in multiple folders, you might have to add each FOLDER manually, I don't know if add is recursive or not.

Well, all of my music is in one folder (My Music...imagine that!), but they are separated into subdirectories for artist and album. Don't know how onerous that might be...oh, I was looking at a Galaxy Metal Gear IPTV. Does anyone know anything about it? It looks like it has about the same functions and the enclosure is cooler looking. You have to get a wireless kit separately, though.

Mvix Mvix firmware to enable WPA (http://www.gizmosforgeeks.com/index.php/articles/2942) for their popular MX-760HD product yesterday. Mvix's MX-760HD is a hi-def 802.11g multimedia center that plugs into your network and allows you to play all your digital content directly on your TV.

The firmware (v1.1.17) enables WPA, which stands for Wi-Fi Protected Access, a far superior protection mechanism than WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy).

ALSO....

MvixUSA has Mvix Source Code (http://www.gizmosforgeeks.com/index.php/articles/2949) for free distribution under the GNU General Public License (GPL). Lately, MvixUSA and Unicorn Network Total Solution have taken some heat from users wanting access to the source code citing GPL violations. An email was even sent to the GPL Violations project.

I've downloaded it already and it's 54.5MB compresses with 18277 files.

yeah, I saw the source code was up. I've downloaded it but I haven't had a chance to look at it yet. I'll probably mess around with it over the next few days and see if I can come up with anything

(video frame drop stuter every 5-10 min... playback reset on files bigger than 4gb.. audio drops out when using FF or RW) I would forever be in your debt. :D Pleeeeeease?

I found that although the Component out connection on the Mvix 760 HD is very good at upconverting and playing through my HDTV (panasonic th-50ph9uk plasma) , the DVI connection leaves a lot to be desired. I thought maybe something was wrong with my HDTV hdmi connection but I tried it on my 19 DVI Viewsonic LCD and it was the same. Dark areas and somewhat blocky picture. Even 720p content was blocky. Changing the Mvix picture settings kinda helped but seems like the programmers forgot to adjust the default levels in the firmware (Hint hint) to give a better picture for DVI. Anybody else experience this? Currently using version 1.1.17 of Firmware. Keep up the good work. You have a great product that could get better from here.

I love you anti, thank you so much! If I can send you any .ts samples to help please let me know.

The frame drop video stutter seems to happen in all rejoined .ts files and the playback of all .ts files bigger than 4gb will not complete playback. The audio drops out on FF and RW (and sometimes freezes up player) this happens with all .ts files.

If you can fix these bugs I will construct a monument in your image and worship it! heheh thanks again anti for all your valuable efforts!

Anti, if you could do a very simple tutorial on how to do these firmware hacks I'll definitely be up for having a go myself.

I'm not a linux expert myself but know some people that are. From what's already in this thread, I get the idea that you install uclinux on a PC, set it up how you want, compile it and then push it to the box. I don't really know how to do any of these things but I'm very willing to have a go with some guidance.

Loaded the 1.1.7 firmware tonight and WPA worked fine to a Linksys router. Didn't have time to play a full movie, but I did encounter one glitch while playing a VIDEO_TS for a couple minutes. (Mind you, this is coming off an ancient 450Mhz dual processor Mac that also serves up web pages with reasonable activity.)

One note.... They neglected any way to put a space in the SSID field, so if your router's SSID has a space, you will have to remove it.

squished Squirre,

What about space in the WPA password phrase?

does it support WPA-PSK (AES/TKP)?

here a factory resest if machine no run !

The factory reset procedure in the manual for the MX-760HD is incorrect, please use the following procedure.

MX-760HD

Power off the Mvix Player completely. Remove the power cord from the player for 15 minutes.
Plug-In the power cable. Wait for 10 seconds.
Simultaneously press the STOP, OK and POWER buttons on the unit (not on the Remote). Hold for 10-seconds
"Factory Reset" should display on the LCD monitor
The unit Reboots and returns to Factory Default condition.

That's odd. No way to enter a space there either, that I can tell.

It support both AES and TKIP, although at the moment I'm using TKIP. Have not tested AES yet.

I'll have to open a ticket for that.

My box has just arrived! I'm very impressed with the quality look and feel of this unit. HDD was extremely easy to fit, no messing with screwing it in or anything.

Can't wait to get modding it! :)

Mvix Tech support replied to my email about spaces in SSID and Passwords... it went something like this:

Patient User: Doctor, it hurts when I try and type a space.

Doctor Mvix: Then don't do that.

Did anyone else have issues with wireless after upgrading to the latest firmware (1.1.7)?

I was just wondering, what's the situation with copying stuff to and from the internal drive over the network. I understand this can be done possibly by FTP or NAS but it hasn't been done in a firmware upgrade yet, right?

Ideally I want to be able to copy files from PC to box over the wireless network whilst either using the box or the PC. Are both these methods possible with NAS and/or FTP?
