View Full Version : How many people are interested in a DVI repeater/HDCP stripper?

First off, this is not a for sale post. I'm just trying to gather interest, so I thought it would be appropriate to post in this section. If not, I'm sure a mod will let me know. ;) I've been a long-time lurker on this forum, but am a new poster.

Anyway, I've been talking with moome about the DVI repeaters that he recently sold in the for sale section. I'm really interested in these, as I'm going to be building my own projector soon and depending on the display I use, I will probably need one of these.

Moome said that his guy who made them will only make them in quantities of 20 or more. So, I'm trying to see if there is enough interest in these on the forum for moome to order another batch.

Basically, it is just a DVI repeater that will let you use a longer cable. It supports resolutions up to 1080i/960p and from what I understand will support 1080p if you're using a shorter cable. The device also acts as an HDCP stripper for those of us with older displays that do not support HDCP.

So, please reply if you're genuinely interested.

Right now, only one of my two displays even supports HDCP. Someday that will change, but even then, HDCP can only cause problems, never improve anything, and I'd pay just to be rid of it. What I'd rather do is not even buy hardware that supports it (sources or displays) in order to send a message to manufacturers, but that's no longer possible.

These already exist and are readily available. What is this device going to offer that the others don't?

Axatax: Really? Where can I get a "readily available" HDCP Stripper? I am interested in buying one.

Will this device get rid of the annoying long hdcp handshake which makes switching between hdmi sources so painful compared to component?

Indeed, but all of them that I have seen are $300+. Moome was selling his boxes for less than half that price.

Yes, I absolutely agree. I'm using a Dell 2405FPW as my primary and best display, which doesn't support HDCP, and I'm not going to buy the upgrade to it just so I can get HDCP. (Besides, they dropped analog input and 1:1 pixel mapping in the upgrade, so it's actually a worse monitor.)

Similar to your sentiments, I'm trying to make it a point, on principle, to not buy any devices solely to get HDCP support when I would not be buying those devices otherwise, with the exception of devices by niche manufacturers which serve to work around HDCP (example, SDI mods).

The media companies are pushing this even when it jeopardizes the adoption of the new HD DVD and BD formats, even though copying via an unencrypted digital output would unlikely be a preferred means of piracy. And in any case, once even one stripper device gets into the wild, the jig is over. There's no reason to keep enforcing it any longer (kinda like CSS on DVDs).

Hey, guess what? If I can't enjoy HD DVD and BD due to HDCP without downscaling the image over component, then I'm not going to buy new devices...I'll sit out HD until things change. Hey, so Sony is making games on the PS3 use HDCP, as if that serves any imaginable anti-piracy purpose?* Guess I won't be getting a PS3. It's like they're insulting paying customers just because they can. I'm helping to bring the media companies' pointlessly arrogant decisions to their pocketbooks, and they can decide if they still think it was a good idea.

Jeff,
I recently bought an AV receiver by Denon to go with my Denon 5900. The audio over optical cable works great EXCEPT for the few SACD CDs I have. Hmmmm, SACD is considered by many to be yet another DEAD SONY proprietary standard. Perhaps one reason is that they have done such a great job protecting content that even legitimate users are locked out.
My Denon 5900 will not play DVDs through DVI without HDCP. Talk about closing the barn doors after the cows are gone....what are they trying to protect when I can buy any of a number of programs to rip and copy DVDs? How much harder would it be to try to take the DVI stream to record when the DVD is wide open?????
Now they are in another format war and they continue to NOT learn from the past.

I need one DVI-DVI
Want to use it between Oppo 970 and IscanHD+ to output VGA to my Vizio P50 (for 1:1 mapping purpose)
Please post when it's available
Thanks

I would very much like such a box.

But what happened to the external HDMI/DVI to RGBs/HV box for CRTs, didn't that one "stripp" HDCP? <-- I would prefer one of those at the moment.

there are some cards for CRT projectors that do HDCP.

Note that HDCP stripping is likely against the DCMA laws and as such not allowed on this forum, regardless of how much we {all} hate HDCP.

So an external box that takes a (doh) digital HDMI/DVI and converts the signal to analog RGBHV is considered illegal, but an internal card that does the same is considered legal -- I mean it still "stripps" the HDCP so the signal can be displayed by an analog device?

I just don't get it.

It's legal to use an oppo971H (or the new Helios 4000H) dvi/hdmi-out to VP dvi-in and convert it tp analog-out into an analog display. But doing the same with an oppo970hd becomes illegal, even if you nuke the HDCP signal at the display device if it is done just outside the display device. :(

There's at least on company in the US that makes a HDMI to RGBHV that can make the conversion even if the signal is HDCP protected, so why is that legal? (is it just about who's paying the license-fee and who doesn't?)

I just don't get it.

So if you have RGBHV to a CRT display what exactly does this device do for you besides free up an analog connection on a scaler?

And does the repeater part actually do anything? Monoprice sells 50' DVI cables with no mention of needing a repeater.

Thanks dominical2, but it's not exactly the HDCP I don't get, it's why some seemingly have to implement it, while others don't, and why you can't bypass it.

And as far as I know there is no mentioning in the legal text that a digital HDCP encrypted video signal converted into RGBHV or RGBs (by an external box) would be illegal for the specific purpose of feeding the analog signal to a display device ... at least not in Sweden. But ofcourse the legal text is full of paradoxes. :(
