Just like it says, where was your PS3 made? Any insights on manufacturing differences?

Just noticed...60 from China.

I'm guessing the China ones are manufactured by Asus and the Japan ones are made by Sony. I wouldn't worry so much about having a China one.

At first, I thought the 60GB were made in Japan while the 20GB machines were made in China but this poll proves otherwise. We'll see if any Japanese 20GB ones show up.

Did anyone notice any difference in quality between Japan made and China made?

I would venture to guess that only those who were able to procure more than one could tell us that. On second thought I guess if you had friend with one made in the other country you could compare.

Mine's 60 gig china though don't think there's any difference whatsoever in construction or quality since it's not like they use cheaper parts. It could be due to export (ie. less expensive for them to build and ship them in bulk to North America from china rather than japan). I'm located in canada, and many of my sony products post 1990 production are made outside of japan such as china, malaysia and phillipines. However, even the sony products I owned that were made in japan were still prone to defects (sony d-ej01 cd walkman and 700dj cans) :(

Well,

In the case of PS3 the made in China systems are superior.

(Cause that's what my box says and for the moment that's what I prefer to believe. Apologies to anyone lucky enough to get one from Japan.)

I have electronics made all over the world, Japan, China, Korea, Malaysia etc. etc. Generally I found that the place of manufacture has much less to do with quality as compared to brand name. For example, I wouldn't buy any Philips branded stuff no matter where it is made  SONY on the other hand generally does have good quality no matter where it is made

A few years back I got a SONY 40 inch RPTV tabletop which was made in Mexico, it broke after a week, the replacement had a bad blue gun. Luckily Sony Service in San Diego replaced the gun instead of giving me a third unit... My ex has the set now, it still works...

My PS3 was made in China, as indicated on the box... as with all the accessories it came with.

China does not mean it is low quality. The thing about China it is cheap to set up factories to produce product due to the under valued Chinese currency (1 yuan = 0.12USD), most manufactures and one that I personally deal with based here in San Jose set up factories that are 100% under their control and build new factories every few years to keep up with advanced production technology.

The old adage "you get what you pay for" holds true in China also. You can build cheap factories that produce crap (the crap that falls apart the first time a kid touches it) or you can build a unprecedented high end techno factory that produces the PS3.

I am sure Sony is in control of the PS3 construction wherever it is built.

Mine was manufactured in Japan and it's a 60GB with no issues so far... But conserning the China made PS3's, if Asus does make them then there should be no issues. In my experience their computer components such as motherboards and video cards all exceed my expectations for reliabilty etc.

China is booming and hungry right now. I would suspect Sony has certain standards of quality control and I would think it is not an issue. China does well with electronics.

Athough I have bought Honda's and Toyota's and although I didn't notice to my eye, the one's built here in the US had lower standards of Quality control. A toyota dealer owner showed me some of the differences. I was not too surprised. :(

LOL. Why would anyone give a rats ass? Don't we have enough "vs." threads out there???

Must we be fished in a "Japan vs. China: Who's QC is better" debate?

I want to give this a little bump to see if much has changed.

As of December 03, 2006.

My 20GB Playstation 3 was made in China. 17 -- 27.87%
My 20GB Playstation 3 was made in Japan. 0 --- 0%
My 60GB Playstation 3 was made in China. 33 -- 54.10%
My 60GB Playstation 3 was made in Japan. 13 -- 21.31%

I work for a company that does all of it mfg overseas. The parent company controls the BOM (Bill Of Materials) which states what parts the contract mfg may use (ie the same vendor and vendor part numbers are used regardless of where its assembled). The parent company also controls the quality by stating what tests the unit must pass before it is shipped which will also be the same regardless of where it was built. The main reason a lot of companies go overseas are labor and startup costs (due to tax incentives and the like). Except for a couple of stickers, the Japan model and the China model should be identical.

For me, the surprising thing about this was that North America got some of the Made in Japan models. Hell, I know people who got PS3s from launch in Japan ( a week or so before the NA launch) who got Made in China models.

Though I wonder if Sony is still assembling some of the PS3s in Japan. The PS3 I got from launch (at Electronics Boutique in North America) is Made in Japan with an October 2006 built date, but I'm wondering if they still are making them in Japan, not just for sale here, but for sale ANYWHERE.

My theory was that it could be that they were making *some* of them in Japan to *help* the Chinese factory workers churn out as much as they could during launch period, when PS3s were extremely hard to come by. Other than that, I have no idea why they even made some of them in Japan to begin with since it's fair to conclude that the Japanese factory worker is going to be paid more than the Chinese one. I am pretty sure I remember reading articles saying Sony was going to be making the PS3s in China well before the launch, so I thought this was decided from the getgo.

Oh and NOT to turn this into a PS3 VS any other system topic, but where are the 360s and Wiis made, and were any of those made in Japan? I've tried searching for that information but didn't seem to find much concrete other than that I think 360s were Made in Mexico (?!) and Wiis in China? Is that right?

It's interesting that no one has posted a 20GB Made in Japan model yet.

I remember buying a PS2 a full year after that came out here (2001 Christmas)and still ended up getting a Made in Japan unit. Getting Made in Japan electronics is just going to be getting harder and harder to come by.

The bottom line: I can appreciate a Made in Japan PS3 as a collector, but I sincerely doubt a Made in China PS3 is technically inferior to a Made in Japan unit. The only difference in quality is if YOU perceive or predict the Japanese factory worker is going to take better care in assembling your PS3 simply because he or she is Japanese compared to the Chinese factory worker. That's the bottom line as far as I am concerned, and thinking like that is just plain despicable.

Whos cares. This is pointless. It's not like there is a difference in the way it's assembled.

Mine is a 60gb Made in China.
Manufactured January 2007 by Maintek Suzhou

MAINTEK Computer is an affiliate of ASUSTeK Computer, Inc.

The PS3 model Made in Japan is manufactured by Sony EMCS.

The new 40gb model is manufactured in China by Foxconn.

So this boils down to the real question, is there a noticeable PQ difference between the Sony PS3, the Maintek PS3, and the soon to arrive Foxconn PS3?

yeah, mine's from china-- that sucks, I thought the entire first batch was made in Japan.

So did I, until I just checked my box.

I got mine less than a month after launch, and it was one of the first 400,000 that included Talladega Nights. But, apparently, my 60gb was manufactured in China.
