View Full Version : Xbox360 playing DVDs in 4:3 and not 16:9... sleepystevey 11-30-06, 05:16 PM My xbox360 is playing DVDs in a 4:3 format, rather than 16:9 which my Xbox is set to in the console (1080p)... I called microsoft and they were clueless.... Does anybody know anything on this? Kysersose 11-30-06, 05:21 PM What kind of display are you using? SteelGrayScooby 11-30-06, 05:27 PM Mine does that too, It's like watching ESPN HD. The only way to get rid of it is to do zoom. I also have a 1080p TV, but running on 1080i sleepystevey 11-30-06, 05:43 PM Westinghouse 37" 1080p LVM-37W3 My roommates Olevia 32" works fine though. tyropshaw 12-06-06, 05:10 PM Does anyone have a fix for this? I'm having the same problem. Coincidentally (or perhaps not), I have a 42 in Westinghouse 1080P. porieux 12-09-06, 06:33 AM DO you mean the widescreen is stretched vertically to fill the whole screen when it is supposed to be letterbox? If so I'm having the same problem over component. thetruth1983 12-09-06, 08:37 AM Add me to the list of having that same problem. I watched spiderman last night and the only way to change it was to change my 1080p lcd to full. When I streamed the movie over media center, it showed up perfectly in 16:9 while the monitor was in native mode. bisch79 12-09-06, 12:01 PM My Westinghouse 47" lcd did the same thing. Buy a VGA cable, looks great, fills the screen perfect. BTW I use 1080p. Maybe it's a limitation of the upconverting with DVD's that MS has allowed only with VGA. VGA= Great 16x9, Component = 4x3. Go for the MS cable, I tried the Madcatz cable to save some money and the PQ was terrible, 1st party cable is great. homerx 12-09-06, 12:24 PM It a bug in the system you have to set the xbox to 480p to get the right aspect. When I use my xbox 360 for dvd I set it to 480p. bisch79 12-09-06, 12:26 PM It looks to be a bug that was introduced in the last M$ upgrade. The bug doesn't affect those with VGA cables. porieux 12-09-06, 09:42 PM My Xbox is always set to 480p as I have an ED set. Nonetheless it is still stretching DVDs vertically. I put the same DVD in my Mac Mini and it played fine. Hope they fix this soon! porieux 12-31-06, 03:10 PM Is everyone experiencing this bug? I'm wondering if it also affects the HD add on? hookem12387 12-31-06, 03:22 PM I'm wondering if I shouldn't update my xbox if it's going to mess up dvd playig over component. Is this for everyone? Or just some? uzziah 12-31-06, 03:33 PM My Xbox is always set to 480p as I have an ED set this is beside the point but you should probably set it to 720p when playing 360 games porieux 12-31-06, 09:19 PM this is beside the point but you should probably set it to 720p when playing 360 games Really, why is that? Damnationdoormat 12-31-06, 10:09 PM DVDs display fine for me, but I found the Video Marketplace videos are zoomed in, like the 720p trailer for 300 that is supposed to be 2.35:1. No zoom adjustment settings helped. Though I found selecting 480p, setting the 360 to Widescreen (this option is blanked out in the other resolutions), and then going back to 720p restores marketplace 2.35 OAR video to proper 16:9. Might wanna play around with that for DVD. For reference I'm playing on a Samsung HL-P5085W. porieux 01-03-07, 04:34 AM I set the Xbox to 720p and it actually does look better than 480p on my EDTV. Suprised but pleased, thanks for that! I also tried switching to 'standard' instead of 'widescreen' in 480 and in 'standard' DVDs actually displayed correctly. Of course this is not an option in 720p. I have no idea why this is, my TV is EDTV but it's certainly widescreen...weird. Kinda makes me skeptical of getting the HD add on if the movies are not going to display correctly. I may resort to getting the VGA cable to fix this I guess. porieux 01-08-07, 03:55 AM Well I got the VGA cable and now the aspect ratio of DVDs are correct. I have to wonder how many people have the vertical stretch problem over component and don't realize it... |
