View Full Version : Problems with PS3 and HDMI Switch?

Had this over in General Gaming, but got no response. Moving it here.

Hey folks.

I own a 5x1 HDMI switch from Monoprice and a PS3. I am using good cables from Monoprice as well, but I am not able to get the HDMI signal from my PS3 to work through the HDMI switch.

I have a 45' Monoprice HDMI cable running from the switch to my Panasonic AE900U projector. I can connect the PS3 directly to the projector with this same cable and it works fine (i.e. looks AWESOME!). But when I connect the PS3 to the switch with a 3' Monoprice HDMI cable (and use the 45' cable from the switch to the projector), I get no video at all.

Now this switch works great with all my other HDMI equipment. I've swapped ports. I've tried booting things in different order, but no success.

Has anyone else had this problem? It may be a problem with the Sony HDMI port. I know they support HDMI 1.3, but I don't see why that would cause a problem like this.

If you can think of anything helpful, I would very much appreciate it.

I have the 5x1 monoprice switch as well and was having the same problem as you. At first I realized the ps3 was unable to figure out that it had to output hdmi when it was connected thru the switch. I had to directly connect it up to the tv in order for the playstation to swith video output to the hdmi port. Once i knew the hdmi port was active I connected it again to the switch and nothing. I finally realized that for some reason only one port worked with the ps3.... Not sure why??? It was port 5 on the switch. NOt sure if you've tried them all. But that fixed my issues.

Legolad, please confirm if this helped you. I am looking at the same HDMI switch, but would like to know it works with the PS3 first...

Thx

Legolad, I have the same setup as yours, only difference is I have a 30' hdmi cable running to my projector. I've had no luck in any ports. The monoprice switch was pretty useless for me, since only one out of four components ever worked through it for me.

I just set up my Toshiba HD-A1 on port 1 and my PS3 on port 2 of the Monoprice 5x1 switch with no problems whatsoever. I have a 10 ft Monoprice 28AWG cable running from my Yamaha HTR5990 receiver to the HDMI in of the Monoprice, using the Monoprice port savers at both end of the connection. The HDMI cables from both the HD-A1 and PS3 to the Monoprice switch are inexpensive non-Monoprice cables.

Just thought I would pass this on...

I email Monoprice about this problem. This was the response. I am glad that port 5 works :) Thank you too everyone for their replies...

It's been confirmed that port 5 of that particular switch works; we're in the process of finding a solution so that the 4 other ports function correctly as well.

Should you have any question, please feel free to email us.
Thank you for doing business with us.

I *just* picked up a PS3 and an Oppo dvd player today, so I will need to take the HDMI "switching route" from now on.

I would like to know why you are using a Monoprice switcher for HDMI, when the HTR 5990 has HDMI ports and can switch devices as well? Is the picture quality from the Yamaha HTR5990 receiver to your projector via HDMI not that good? Is there any picture degradation?

I have the 5x1 and had no problems. However, it was either connected to port 4 or port 5 to my DVD player and I just swapped out for the PS3.

So port 5 only works for the PS3? Or port 5 only works on the switch? I just got a HD-DVD A2 and will be using port 1 or 2 or 3 and hope I don't run into any issues with the switch.

I've had problems with other HDMI switchers degrading the video signal of HDMI, even those with a "boost" function or adjustable HDMI power, such as Gefen. I currently use Parasound's Zhd 5x1 HDMI switcher, and it works great for all my components, including the PS3. It's the only HDMI switcher I've found that has been able to work for me.

Sadly enough I noticed a problem as well. The switcher only works with one of my ATI video cards. (It works with the X800 XL but doesn't work with my AIW 1900). It also doesn't play nice with Moto 3412.

I hope Monoprice can come up with a fix.

I have the same Monoprice switch along with a Sanyo Z3 running with 45 feet cables from Monoprice switch and 6 foot cable from PS3 to Monoprice swith on input #4 and I have not experienced any problems. I am able to switch sources such as my HD-DVD or 8300HD box and never had a problem. The only thing I noticed is that I need my PS3 on before I switch to input 4, otherwise it won't switch to input 4. I just also switched to a Z5 last night as a quick test and everything worked fine.

I have a monoprice 5x1 switch as well... I currently only have a Pioneer 59avi DVD player on input 1 and plan on hooking up my PS3 to the thing tonight... all through 6 foot cables. I'll see if I run into any issues with it...

I have the Monoprice 5X1 switch hooked up to a Panny 900U projector. I am using a 25 foot DVI cable run (from RAM electronics.. their long-run model) with DVI-HDMI connectors on both sides. I have the PS3 in port 1, my Toshiba HD-A1 in port 2, and I have switched them into other ports without a problem.

Could it be your cable?

Well I tried my switcher with the PS3 last night, and all works without a hitch. I have the 59avi in port 1 and the PS3 in port 2 of the switcher and everything came up first time... Switching between the two is completely smooth and there are no issues. I have not tried the other ports, but at least 2 works for me. This is all using 6 foot cables... 2 are from monoprice and one is a ramelectronics cable.

I did notice that when I was using the ram electronics cable into the display, I had some issues with the DVD player handshaking. Only ports 4 and 5 worked then. I switched to using the monoprice cable into the display and everything works fine. The only difference in the cables is that the ram cable does not have a ferrite bead on the ends while the monoprice cables do. I am wondering if the switchers output is not properly terminated or properly routed as to minimize EMI.

In any case, the PS3 and 59avi are working happily now into the switch and out to the display.

Unfortunate Update: I too started having trouble with my Monoprice 5x1 switcher and the PS3 (with the PS3 plugged into port 2) so I switched the PS3 to port 5 on the Monoprice and all has been well since then. I'm wondering if my upgrading of the PS3 to firmware 1.3 is the root cause of this as port 2 on the Monoprice seemed to be working fine with PS3 firmware version 1.1.

Isamu, the reason I am using the Monoprice to switch is that I have only 2 HDMI inputs on my Sony 60" SXRD XBR1 and one of those inputs is taken by my Scientific Atlanta 8300HD cable box...the 8300HD won't properly handshake with either the Yamaha receiver nor the Monoprice switcher! Also I tested the PS3 with the Yamaha for HDMI switching and was also getting HDMI droputs similar to what I saw with port 2 on the Monoprice so I decided to attach my Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD player along with my PS3 (at port 5 only) to the Monoprice and then output via HDMI to the HDMI input on the Yamaha receiver and use the Monoprice to switch between those 2 sources.

Complicated enough for you? :)

I should note that my Monoprice switch said it was version 2.1.

What version do you all have? There should be a round sticker on the box and I think on the underside of the unit.

I have a Monoprice 5x1 switch (v2.1) and a PS3 (1.31 fw) as well. I'm using Monoprice 6' cables between the switch and the inputs (DVD on 1, PS3 on 5) and a ~25' Monoprice cable to the TV (Sony Bravia LCD).

I can only get the PS3 to send a signal if I plug it in to port 5. Any other port, and I get a blank screen. There is *some* info being passed when the PS3 is hooked up to ports 1-4, however. The switch correctly identifies which port the PS3 is on (LED turns red), and the TV picks up the resolution correctly (720p 16:9 or 480p 4:3, depending on what I've got the PS3 set to output). There just isn't any picture being sent. I'm thinking this has something to do with the PS3 not liking/not handshaking properly through the switch (except on port 5). Everything works just peachy through port 5, of course.

Monoprice has acknowledged this is an issue. They say they are working on it. What happens when they resolve it? Will they replace the faulty ones or will you have to purchase a new one? Any of you ask them about this? Thanks.

I'm having crazy dropouts (even on port 5) between my PS3 and my Panny AX100U Projector. Monoprice 5X1 (Rev 2.1) Switch

When directly connected to the PJ - the PS3 runs flawless.

Any upgates from Monoprice?

Hmm, this is so strange. I have rev 2.0 of the switch and just hooked up the PS3 to port 5 with a Mono 6' hdmi cable, and then another 6' to the tv hdmi, and I watched a movie (Talladega Nights) without nary a hickup. I suspect this is an anomoly though and it won't last.

I also have the Oppo and a HR10-20 into the switch. I did have the A1 working fine with it but with the PS3 into it the A1 won't work. So, the A1 goes into my XR57.

I wish I could get the PS3 working with the XR57.

So many quirks. Anyone know of any differences between the rev 2 and 2.1?

I have no luck using a PS3 on port 5 on a rev 2.1 5x1 Monoprice HDMI switch to a Sony Pearl projector.

PS3 works flawless when connected directly to the Pearl @ 1080p60.

So this "port 5 trick" only works for some people I take it?

My Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD player is working fine on port 1. As is my HTPC on port 2 (at 1080p60 no less).

My DirecTV H20 receiver does not work either with the 5x1 Monoprice, but again, it works just fine when connected directly to the Pearl.

So 2 of my 4 HDMI sources work with the Monoprice switcher, no a very good ratio at all...

mikethewxguy

All my devices (RCA HD DVD Player, HTPC, DIRECTV HR20 DVR) work fine. The PS3 does nt work properly on any port (1-5) on the Monoprice switch. It gives me random blank/black screens at random times, mostly while playing games. This occasionaly happens on Blu Ray playback as well.

Fun stuff!

Maybe the PS3's HDMI 1.3 port passing through a HDMI 1.0, 1.1? switch has some unknown issues in certain situations.

I have the 5x1 Monoprice switch and it works with the Toshiba HD-A1 and HD Cable box out to a Ruby (Sony VPL-VW100) front projector. I can't get the PS3 to work through the switch on any of the 5 ports. I am still going back and forth with Monoprice Tech Support.

The last thing I tried was using an HDMI repeater from Monoprice [Product ID: 2849

This didn't help, so now I'm now waiting for their next suggestion.

Is anyone having problems using the 5x1 switch and two short HDMI cables (6ft or less)? I have rev the monoprice 5x1 rev 2.1, and have never had any dropouts, and the signal runs through any port on the switch 1-5. I'm using a standard 6ft HDMI cable from the ps3 to the switch, and then a high quality 24AWG 50ft cable from the switch to a pt-ax100u.

I'd guess that people having this problem are using lower quality HDMI cables (especially with the 50ft cables). Also, I'm guessing the signal strength for the ps3 is significantly lower than that of an 8300HD, or an upconverting/HD dvd player. go figure. Anyway, even if you were to use a signal booster at the end of your 50ft cables, the signal may already be dead at that length. I would suggest, test your setups with two short HDMI cables, and if that works, try a high quality 50 footer.

JasonSuave:

I'm UNSUCCESSFULLY using this setup:

PS3---> Monoprice HDMI Cable 28AWG (6ft)---> Monoprice 5x1 HDMI switch (rev 2.1)---> Monoprice HDMI Tin-Plated Copper Cable 22AWG (50ft)---> Panasonic AX100U Projector.

I previously owned a Panasonic AE900U and the PS3 connection worked flawlessly using the same above cables/switch.

I have directly connected the 50ft HDMI cable to the PS3---> Panasonic projector and that works flawlessly.

Do you think the drop from 28AWG to 22AWG in my switchbox setup could be the problem? Would it be better to try a 50ft 28AWG HDMI cable from Monoprice?

woodywoodpecker:

I was just about to order the HDMI repeater from Monoprice to try out - if it didn't work for you - looks like it wouldn't work for me either. I have been looking at other HDMI repeaters/boosters and I'm afraid to try them out as well.

Getting sick of TRYING to watch a Blu Ray movie with my setup as it is now...the video dropouts (and there are plenty) are driving the wife and I nuts :(

spwolf:

That switch looks nice - but it's pretty pricey (+$200 over the monoprice switch) but it does add the optical switching as well - which is very nice.

I'm about ready to drop whatever amount of $$$ it takes to get my setup working flawlessly - so i may just try that one out as well.

Mike,

I would try using a higher quality cable from your ps3 to the splitter. If that cable is causing the signal to bottleneck, it may already be too weak to get through the 50' cable (no matter how high quality the 50 footer is).

Another thing I thought of was unplugging everything else in the splitter when testing this. My 8300HD always passes a signal through the switcher, even when it's turned off (there's always a red light), so sometimes I have to manually change inputs on the switcher when I have the ps3 on. Then, of course, you have the funkiness of the pt-ax100u, where it sometimes decides to change the signal type whenever it doesn't detect the signal. I'd hate to see this problem being the result of the fact that the switcher isn't on the right input while the projector is switching signals looking for the right one - this solution might just involve trying to sync everything up at the right moment in time.

22AWG is THICKER & better than 28 AWG, although for digital applications, beyond extremely long runs, even cable thickness is moot.

Try a THICKER (22AWG, or even 24AWG should be adequate) cable from the PS3 to the monoPrice switch.

And sfhub in the official monoprice switch discussion recommends using port 5 or 4 for the highest resolution/distance sources. That's what i use for both my 1920x1080 PCs with 15-foot 24 and 28 AWG runs, respectively. Flawless!

Thanks for setting me straight on the cable thickness (22AWG vs 28AWG) - Just ordered a 6ft 24AWG cable from Monoprice and wil give that a try. They don't sell/list any 22AWG in the shorter lengths. I'll report back with my findings on this cable. many thanks again.

Hrm, I am running the 5x1 Monoprice HDMI switch (v2.1), PS3, ExpressVU HD with goes out to my 43 Panny RP LCD. Not a single prob with the PS3 at all, its been on port 2 since it was installed. I ended up returning mine. I will wait until these problems get fixed. No need to spend over $100 on an item that doesn't work 100%. I am sure monoprice will release a fix or an updated version that is compatible with the PS3.

I tried the higher quality HDMI cable (24 AWG) from the PS3 to the 5X1 switch.

Still a no go. Tried port 4 and port 5 (as well as 1-3).

My next step is to replace the 50ft HDMI cable with a 35ft cable - hopefully that will do the trick.

Is anyone having issues with the Panny AX100U by chance? I doubt that this is the culprit...but let me know if you happen to use this PJ and have no issues while also using the Monoprice 5X1 switcher.

Thanks

OK - I tested my brand spanking new PS3 with my monoprice switch to my Sceptre TV, at 1080p, and the HDMI and HDCP 'modes' on my TV show occasional pink splotches and discoloration. However, set to DVI 'mode' (over the incoming HDMI input), everything looks glorious - all PS3 game demos, videos and DVDs.

Don't own a BluRay disk yet, and I'm getting one from netflix (en route now) - so obviously I haven't tested whether my TV provdes for HDCP negotiation over the DVI 'mode' - but if it doesn't, and that leaves me with splotchy BR movie playback on my otherwise-perfectly-HDMI-compliant-1080p TV, I will test with a direct PS3->TV HDMI connection. If, ideed, the monoprice is introducing the PQ issues, I'll have to get in touch with Sean and ask about an updated version too. (Mine was bought in April 06, has green lights, only the active one lights up - what version is that?)

I got a monoprice rev 2.1 5x1 switch today for hooking my ps3 and 2 dvrs to my Sony CRT set (XBR960). I had the ps3 on input 3, but found when I inserted the first game to play, the picture went blank. I searched and found this thread, and now have the ps3 working on port 5. Hi all, I thought I'd add another option (although this won't help those with the Monoprice unit) in switches. I was in BB yesterday and they just received a new HDMI switch from Psyclone (model number PSC47) which retails for $199. I've been going round and round looking for a component switch and have settled on the Psyclone unit for that which is working flawlessly. I may be upgrading my PJ in a few months so have started following all the HDMI stuff. If all else fails, you may want to try this one out. I know it's double the price but it may be worth it. I searched all over the web and even on Psyclone's webpage and it's not listed. you may want to hit up the local BB and check it out. I believe it also handles optical switching.

Actually I think the monoprice switcher has dropped in price. It's now $85.

As an update, the BluRay disc REQUIRED HDCP, but through the switch, to my Sceptre, set to HDCP (HDMI), it showed up perfectly with no color splotchiness! Go figure!

So my TV, the PS3 and the switch DO coexist beautifully in every possible application, I just have to switch between input modes over my HDMI input :)

No luck here with PS3 (firmware 1.5 now and whatever it was before).

I have the Monoprice 5x1 switching a home theater PC (DVI to HDMI) to a Syntax Olevia TV 32 LT32HV which is a 32" 720P display (DVI input). The TV displays the resolution switches but no picture. Switch passes through PC at 1280x720 just fine.

I have tried all 5 ports. Everything is fine if I take the cable I plugged into the switch output directly into the PS3.

Used online support around a week ago but no answer yet. Guess I have to call.

I have the Monoprice 5x1 switch, PS3 works on all ports, no problems at all. Try shorter or better quality cables? Mine are only 6ft HDMI or HDMI/DVI cables (also from Monoprice).

I have the 5x1 with monoprice cables (3ft) hooked up to my cable box (8300HD) in port 1 and my ps3 in port 2 and I have had no problems at all. I have a Toshiba 46" DLP (46hm84).

I have my PS3 now connected to port 1 and my pc gfx card connected to port 2. No problems thus far (which is odd because a few months ago the I tried the same setup with the same gfx card and it wouldn't pass the signal).

I have a Panasonic AX100U and since my Onkyo receiver has no HDMI, I ran a 35' Monoprice HDMI cable from the AX100u to the 5x1 Monoprice HDMI Switch and then used 3' Monoprice HDMI cables to connect the following:
Port 1 - Sci-Atl HD Cable/DVR (works great)
Port 2 - Panasonic upconverting DVD player (works great)
Port 3 - empty
Port 4 - empty
Port 5 - Sony PS3 (works OK now - did not work in port 2 at all)

NOTE: Though the PS3 is currently working on Port 5, there seems to be a hiccup when first starting it up, it goes to the blue screen once or twice in the first 20 seconds, like it's searching for the signal, and then it seems to be fine after that. Not sure what version of firmware my PS3 is running but it was bought in November and I havent updated it since I bought it (and I probably won't until this issue is fixed).

I beleive that the 5x1 Monoprice has a 1 year warranty, hopefully they'll be able to take care of this.

okay - good news (finally)

I had previously posted about having major issues between my PS3--->Monoprice 5x1 HDMI Switch--->50ft HDMI cable. The picture would blink to blue screen and back at random times both throughout BRD playback and PS3 gaming (yes, even on port 5).

After switching out the 50ft HDMI cable with a shorter one (35ft) (it barely reached!) - I now can be happy to report that I'm having no more issues with my setup.

I can finally relax :)

Anyone using this switch with a series 3 TiVo? I was just given a PS3 and I'd like to use this switch but I haven't seen anyone with a S3 TiVo report yet.

I am using this switch with a Series 3 Tivo with no issues. My PS3 (fw 1.81) is not working though, I am going to try it in port 5 tonight.

Sorry for not responding to some of you before now.

After swapping out my switch multiple times (tried old 5x1, new 5x1, and new 4x1) I had no luck.

After reading all the success stories of others, I gave up on the switch idea altogether.

I connected my PS3 directly to the AE900U via HDMI and everything else is connected via component. Yes, I know this sucks, but I decided to wait for the technology to mature a little.

Now I am getting ready to buy a 1080P projector and a shiny new receiver with HDMI built in. That should solve all the problems I was having earlier.

I don't know what I'll buy yet - still researching - but sometime this year I'm getting a full HD system - finally!

I have a similar setup to many here: PS3 --> 6' 28AWG cable --> Monoprice 4x1 HDMI switcher --> 35' 24AWG cable --> Epson Home Cinema 8350 (awesome pj, BTW)

The weird thing for me is, this setup worked great for more than a year on my old NEC pj, and was also fine for a couple months on the Epson. We used the PS3 for both games and watching BDs. Then a few weeks ago, we started noticing that the PS3 display would go blank randomly, or we would see static for a second or so as the pj tried to find a signal. Now it won't display anything. When the PS3 is connected, the pj says either "no signal" or "unsupported" (with some horizontal and vertical frequency numbers displayed). I can plug the PS3 directly to the pj via the 35 ft HDMI cable and it works fine. We also use a TiVo HD 3 through the switcher and it has worked flawlessly for over a year.

I tried replacing the switcher, and also using other ports and cables. No luck. This tells me that something changed in the PS3, like the signal output strength degraded or something. It really did work fine with the switcher for a couple months, then later decided not to.

Any ideas?

I was having trouble with PS3 going through a Monoprice 4088 HDMI switcher. My actual setup was PS3 (fat kind) and Wii (with Wii2HDMI adapter) going through the 4088, followed by a 30 foot HDMI cable run inside the wall to my Sony 1080p flat screen.

My problem was... the switcher passed the Wii but not the PS3. So, then I tried a Rocketfish 4 to 1 HDMI switcher from Best Buy ($99). Exact same result. No PS3 signal. Finally, I decided to try the SONY SB-HD21, 2 to 1 HDMI switcher ($99); and it worked perfectly on both the PS3 and the Wii. This Sony switcher is out of production, and it is only an A/B switch, but you can still find it on Amazon here:

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SB-HD21-HDMI-Way-Selector/dp/B001AI1SCK

There are a lot of cheap HDMI switchers on the internet and all of them claim they are 1.3 compliant. My guess is the Sony switcher is just more compliant with the HDMI standards (as well as other standards) and it works well with ps3 and a long cable run.

If you need an HDMI switcher with more inputs, you might try another out of production product, the Oppo HM-31. I have not used this one, but I hear it is compliant:

Good luck!
