View Full Version : The Omen: Where's the bass?
thebland 12-03-06, 10:54 PM Popped this in tonight..Great looking picture and dynamic audio but it seems as though the bass was hardly available. I had to look back at my subs to see if they were engaged. Though there were a couple scenes where there was some very low bass (under 20 Hz), all bass between 20 Hz and 50 Hz seemed quite muted... Disappointing. Review to come. Only a lossy DTS track is available.
Gary Murrell 12-04-06, 12:22 AM Omen is one of the worst BR to me so far, it had horrid posterization and mpeg artifacts
mpeg2 at 18 Mbps might cut it for a 2.40:1 movie but for a full frame 1.85:1 movie it is not
the DTS track at 1506 Kbps was pretty darn good I thought

According to the in-movie menus, they claimed to have lossless DTS on the disc. Is that incorrect? I netflix'ed so I didn't have the package to compare to.
I thought the sound (using DTS core track) sounded pretty good. A wide dynamic range and the bass kicked in when it was appropriate.
Gary Murrell 12-04-06, 12:26 AM yes Omen has lossless but we only get DTS core right now, which is pretty darn good ;)

I rented the Omen via Netflix and I am glad I only rented it! ;)
thebland 12-04-06, 11:11 AM I was so mystified by the lack of bass in the 40Hz area that I retested my system this morning to make sure my DSP / EQ and settings were good...They were.
Disappointing low end. There were many thunderstorm scenes that were somewhat hollow sounding like the bass had been sucked out... That said, dynamics were first rate as was surround effects (though not used quite as often as I'd have liked.
Gary,..I didn't see that many artifacts thuogh the picture had a softish stylized looks.
JOHNnDENVER 12-04-06, 12:42 PM I had this title in my hands at CC, but the CC is so screwed up, they would not let me purchase Black Hawk Down, so I left over $500 worth of stuff sitting at the register and left the store in non to good of a mood.
I actually don't think I am going to pick this one up, the original is one of those movies that maybe should not have been redone. :)
But I still may get it depending on the posts here about it, early posts are making me lean to not picking this one up.
Tom Bley 12-30-06, 09:48 AM Any of you Omen blu-ray owners notice the when watching the movie about halfway through that the picture dims and then pulsates a few seconds dim then light, dim then light? I will get a specific time. I have a PS3 that has played other movies fine. I was able to repeat this on the disc. I was just wondering if it was a bad pressing.
It happens just after you see that big sign/banner on the wall...I for got what it says. Already returned the rental.
Rachael Bellomy 12-30-06, 10:50 AM If you look outside the foreground of most shots in this movie, there isn't much detail. I know part of that is the shooting style but I doubt all of it is...? I can't wait to not watch it again.
vurbano 12-30-06, 06:37 PM bland gave this 4 out of 5 stars for PQ???? Looks like Gary some people havent been drinking the blue coolaid on this one.

What did you think about it on your setup?
Tom Bley 12-30-06, 07:50 PM Can anyone answer my question above?

I don't recall that.
NoUserName22 01-29-07, 12:30 AM I bought a new Klipsch Synergy sub-12 subwoofer and hooked it up right before I watched this movie. I haven't recalibrated with the Pioneer Elite's MCACC yet, so maybe I had it up too high. Either way, I thought the windows in my den were going to shatter during a couple of scenes. I definitely did not notice a lack of bass.
My ear is nowhere near as well trained for sound as most on this board (too much time spent hunting and around loud tractors/factory equipment). I do still have exceptional eyesight though and I found the video quality to be amazing. There was one scene early in the movie where I noticed that the ambassador had done a really bad job shaving under his right jaw line in just one little spot.
This was my first full movie with the new PS3 and I was blown away by the quality (though I do still also enjoy my HD-A1). :)
