I am looking for a new racing game and I wanted opinions on this title. I read that the servers were overloaded and the game was hell online... has that changed?

View Full Version : Test Drive Unlimited Opinions? FrankJ.Cone 12-04-06, 02:36 PM I am looking for a new racing game and I wanted opinions on this title. I read that the servers were overloaded and the game was hell online... has that changed? GabooN 12-04-06, 03:02 PM Great game and it was only $39.00 when it was released so you might be able to find it cheaper. I have not played it for sometime so I can’t comment on how it plays now but I never had any huge issues online. I would put this game up there with one of the more hardcore sims, motor cycles are fun but unrealistic, cars drive great and each car has a unique feel and sometimes a unique learning curve, it has 80+ vehicles in retail and more can be accessed via DLC(Marketplace). There has been a demo out for sometime and I would recommend d/l it. If you’re a racing fan I don’t think you will be disappointed. NoThru22 12-04-06, 03:31 PM I will probably be picking this up as it seems to be the only other game besides PGR3 that works well with the FF wheel. You can't enable the wheel in the demo though, which is puzzling. one43637 12-04-06, 04:02 PM it's a good game especially at the price point. the people complaining about online are the probably the ones that are having issues connecting with people because of NAT issues. if you leave your NAT open, then you should have no problem connecting with people. personally, i like the game. it's not your usual racing game (GT comes to mind) because i'm not in it just to race. i'm just driving around Oahu and collecting different cars while meeting people on the road. it's rather relaxing to me. FrancescoP 12-04-06, 04:15 PM Amazing game. It's an MMO racer. You make missions, transport people, PvP, customize your character, mod your car/moto, etc. It' almost Oblivion on wheels. Highly recommended. Broccoli 12-04-06, 04:29 PM I really like TDU it's something new and fresh for a racing game it's well worth the money. I never had any online problems. Mcklein 12-04-06, 06:29 PM Ill say go for it...tons of cars lots of roads to explore. NoThru22 12-04-06, 09:45 PM I logged onto the demo last night to test the wheel and I found that you can't turn it on in the options, but you can still steer with it. You just have to turn it about 1/4 of the way to get it to respond. So I was driving all over the road and this one guy decided to just start ramming me for the fun of it and I couldn't get away. I didn't see a way to turn off the MMO portion. WirelessGuru 12-04-06, 09:55 PM Get the full game. It is well worth the purchase price. The demo sucks, too many limitations. danieloneil01 12-05-06, 01:38 AM I am looking for a new racing game and I wanted opinions on this title. I read that the servers were overloaded and the game was hell online... has that changed? Hell, I'll give you mine.. danieloneil01 12-05-06, 01:40 AM I logged onto the demo last night to test the wheel and I found that you can't turn it on in the options, but you can still steer with it. You just have to turn it about 1/4 of the way to get it to respond. So I was driving all over the road and this one guy decided to just start ramming me for the fun of it and I couldn't get away. I didn't see a way to turn off the MMO portion. If you stand still you go invisable or you can go back to the map and go somewhere else.. Annoying yes but you avoid him.. NoThru22 12-05-06, 08:58 AM I didn't play for long because the wheel was not really supported. HeadRusch 12-05-06, 11:34 AM I started out disliking it, then I would up loving it and playing it all the time. It helps once you get accustomed to some of the road areas around the island. The handling is good no matter which view you use, I prefer the in-cocpit. I'm still working my way through the single player game tho I am getting close to wrapping that up, when my unbricked 360 machine makes its way back to me I'll work on finishing off some of the last of the single player missions. When you travel around from place to place you will see single players racing by...thats neet.....its fun when you're in Single Player, and choose to race to a mission rather than just "warp there".....its also neet to be driving with other people also on their way to single player missions. I enjoy the car-delivery missions (which require you to drive very conservatively if you want to earn the maximum money in the game, which you'll want to do if you want to buy the faster cars, earning cars in this game takes time. Its nice to have to, say, really watch your passing and learn how the car handles in order to make it to the delivery point without ANY issues, which lower your total $$$ take home.). If this sounds overly fanboyish, I must admit to have taken a real shine to the game after being initially very disappointed in it. It controls great with the joypad, tho it would be perfect for use with the wheel.....hopefully a patch is in the works. gamegod2x 12-05-06, 12:48 PM it was great at first but there are missions later in the game where you have to drive like 50 plus miles etc. and it just gets stupid, i really want to play it but the controls and the extremely long missions get overwhelming after a while. The Keither 12-05-06, 01:28 PM I really, really wanted to like this game. I kept playing it, thinking it would get better, and for me, it really didnt. I really didnt like the controls...they seemed inconsistent to me. Its a "meh" looking game (your in-game counterpart is UG-LY). I had no online problems with the game, but it just didnt suck me into the world. It was a good attempt, though. There are some really solid ideas. Perhaps a sequel will iron out the issues. HeadRusch 12-05-06, 02:14 PM When I first got the game I commented how, had anyone other than Atari developed the title, it would have been a home run. Instead its more like a ground rules double. There are alot of areas that need polish, and the game...while being massive...has a "last gen graphics in a next-gen 720p resolution" look to it. But I kinda dig those 35 mile missions....you really gotta drive careful....and it becomes a real challenge to pass a half dozen cars and then not go off-road or clip another car or whatever...sometimse the cars you gotta drive are dogs, or they handle terribly, or they're too quick....its part of the challenge. Its "different" from PGR3 which is, basically, buy a super fast car and race on tracks. I do like the open-ended racing...but the moon-buggy physics when going over bumps can get a little stale. Little touches...like hearing the exhaust notes and road noise change when you raise or lower your windows, and the excellent quality of the engine sounds....those do work really well, however. I also like being able to adjust your in car view. I dunno, I like it. I can definately see, however, whys ome folks dont. To me its like GTA III....you give up fancy graphics in exchange for an open-ended world...while the graphics aren't BAD, they are a bit Meh. one43637 12-05-06, 02:21 PM i just remembered that there are no pedestrians in this game lol. plenty of pedestrian cars though ;) danieloneil01 12-05-06, 02:49 PM i just remembered that there are no pedestrians in this game lol. plenty of pedestrian cars though ;) Yes there is waaaaaaaaaay to many cars for such a small island.. The Keither 12-05-06, 03:01 PM Headrusch You are right, I actually liked the car models, and the scenery was really nice, I guess the people models were so awful, that I just fixated on it. I mean, the guy I picked out looked emaciated, EAT SOMETHING!! :D Oh, and you brought up my #1 annoyance and stated it perfectly. When racing and you hit a bump, that's it. If you dont slow down, your doomed, but yet the AI can do it perfectly. ARRGH! Bad, bad, bad BAD game design. Like I said, it does have some really good ideas. The long drive missions actually broke up the game nicely I thought. Maybe its b/c I didnt progress all that far, but it seemed like a few more variety of races were needed, too. HeadRusch 12-05-06, 08:43 PM I think you really have to want to get the other cars in the game, so you'll go through the missions....unlike PGR3 it does take alot of work to earn money in this game so buying cars becomes a very selective process. PS: you can change the look of your characters... I picked a chick and wound up getting her to look almost exactly like Michael Jackson (the current Freak version).... I dig the car physics once you get used to them..in SOME ways they are more realistic than PGR3, in other ways not so much. Still, its fun... Unpolished? Yes...great concept? Absolutely.....to me there wound up being more to like than to dislike. Plus, racing first-person on the bike was the first time a game ever made my physically nauseous while playing :D NoThru22 12-05-06, 09:27 PM If this sounds overly fanboyish, I must admit to have taken a real shine to the game after being initially very disappointed in it. It controls great with the joypad, tho it would be perfect for use with the wheel.....hopefully a patch is in the works. I've read that the retail version works well with the wheel. It's the demo I was talking about where I couldn't enable the wheel. I will tell you if this is true when I pick up the game next week. dhan 02-04-07, 12:39 PM Well... I played TDU last night and it downloaded a patch. Last time I had played the game with the wheel, the control was awful (being plagued with a waay too big dead zone). Last night after the patch I activated the wheel in the option menu sliding linearity cursor a quarter to the left. I also putted wheel sensitivity to max. Then I started to actually enjoy the game with the wheel. I hated the controls, now I love em. modiGTI 02-05-07, 02:45 AM I rented the game a few days ago...I'm hooked! Feel free to add me to your friendlist if you want to get some races going or just mess around. I'll be picking up the game this week. I love the details they put into the cars and the sounds of each car is really nice also. HeadRusch 02-05-07, 09:14 AM I haven't fired up this game in awhile...I bought the added car packs, and even bought a couple of the cars...(Wanted the vintage Ferarri but at 3 million....DONT think so :) ). Have they released the FF patch yet? Once they do I'm going to be tempted to get the wheel in anticipation of Forza 2. spinksjinx 02-05-07, 09:36 AM I got it, I really like it. It is a racing game that actually makes you learn to brake and learn how to drive. The side missions like the driving people around can get tedious. The speed races are a quick way to pick up cash. Online is fine, I havent had no lag or problems with it and its a laid back atmosphere. I was driving around in my crappy Chevy SSR and this guy on a back just drives up to me and asks if I want to by an F1 Mclaren for 50k with only 8 miles...Really cool people online, at least in my experience. The upgrades are not all that great but its a solid racing title...I would like to play it more than I actually do but I am still waiting to find enough time to do the race of "tour of the island" its like 180 miles long and your movement throughout the area is in real time...Worth it for 40 bucks definately. SixkillerNYC 02-05-07, 09:44 AM TDU was my game of the year for 2006. It does a whole lot of things right. HeadRusch 02-05-07, 10:00 AM If you can take a modified bike into those "race of the islands" then do it......the one where its all Class A supercars will be a challenge, but if you're on a bike, you'll smoke the competition in no time because they're much easier to control on open roads. The one where you are fighting the clock with no other opponents, but traffic and cops, that one ISNT as easy (Millionaries challengE)...I mean, I beat it twice.....but it does take awhile..and you can get busted easy if you're not careful. The last time I did it I had 4 minutes to spare...... that one was actually easier with a car.... xlurkr 02-05-07, 12:41 PM Forgive my newbie ignorance, but how do you download the patch? I have the game and the wheel, and I've got the deadzone in the middle. Do I need a hard drive or a registration on Live to get the patch? I have neither. spinksjinx 02-05-07, 12:52 PM Forgive my newbie ignorance, but how do you download the patch? I have the game and the wheel, and I've got the deadzone in the middle. Do I need a hard drive or a registration on Live to get the patch? I have neither. Connect your 360 to the internet. Sign into live gold or silver will work put in TDU when connected and it will automatically pop up for an update. dhan 02-05-07, 03:47 PM Forgive my newbie ignorance, but how do you download the patch? I have the game and the wheel, and I've got the deadzone in the middle. Do I need a hard drive or a registration on Live to get the patch? I have neither. You need to register on Live but you don't have to pay for gold membership, silver will do. I also think you need a hard drive to store the patch. You then have to activate the wheel in the option menu (on pause) and play with linearity slider to fit your needs. Can you activate the wheel without the patch? I don't remember seing this option there before the patch... Maybe it was there and I just didn't see it... Hammer65 02-05-07, 05:12 PM I'm really enjoying this game right now. It's a great concept and it does do more right that wrong. Minor quibbles include no rear view mirror in first person mode. I always drive in first person or bumper cam and a mirror is really needed in a close race. You can do a quick look behind but at 200+ it's a bit disorienting. Pop in at high speed can be distracting as well. I also find it hard to feather the brakes. I wish there was a sensitivity setting for the trigger. modiGTI 02-05-07, 10:20 PM Yeah the game is pretty chill back, I've been making most of my money with the Car Delivery missions. mboojigga 02-06-07, 12:24 AM I enjoy it. It honestly is relaxing to simply drive around the island and then choose to race from time to time. modiGTI 02-06-07, 05:27 PM I was on a 20 mile race yesterday....missed it by 2 mins. :\ LedZep 02-10-07, 12:12 AM It's a great game. spinksjinx 02-10-07, 12:35 PM Has anyone completed the tour of the island race yet? It is like 180 miles I do believe...If I do it in say a Corvette will I be sure to pass it? I would seriously hate to put in all of that time and then get nothing from it... modiGTI 02-10-07, 01:56 PM Has anyone completed the tour of the island race yet? It is like 180 miles I do believe...If I do it in say a Corvette will I be sure to pass it? I would seriously hate to put in all of that time and then get nothing from it... Yeah I know what you mean, I'm thinking about doing it in my new CCR. HeadRusch 02-10-07, 06:45 PM Tour of the Island if I remember correctly is you versus other cars, no cops, no traffic. If so, no, you'll never beat it in a Corvette....you'll be racing against class A cars. For that one, use a superbike......a pimped out superbike..and you'll do it easily, just remember to take it slow on the twisty parts of the track. The millionaires challange I'd do in a car, not a bike...something very fast...but you're against traffic (and cops) in that one so learn how to pass cars on the right without going off the road....then you'll be ok. spinksjinx 02-11-07, 12:10 AM Thanks for the heads up...I tried out the bikes and I hate them I dont think I could hack it with my bike for that long....Id love to do it with my Lotus but I doubt that would make it if it is class 1 cars and I am not even trying out my F-1 I hate that car...Bike it is. ooPAYNEoo 02-11-07, 09:06 AM this game is addicting, but I can't seem to get off expert mode. How long does that take??? also, does anyone have a club on AVS that I could join? or I was thinking of making a cruise club, just to knock that one off the list. -and would an slr mclaren benz do for the tour of the island race? HeadRusch 02-11-07, 01:06 PM Yes, but the SLR Benz isn't the best way to spend your money....there are faster, cheaper cars. The Mclaren has a tendency to spin easily on turns........but it all depends on what you like. spinksjinx 02-11-07, 06:19 PM Their is an AVS club but I can never seem to get access. :( The F-1 is one crazy car, I dont really like it. I would rather be driving around in my Dodge Challenger all day than that car..Its ridiculously fast and like you said to easy to spin out in...Just to much speed for my taste I guess. HeadRusch 02-11-07, 07:10 PM I created an AVS club there....but then never logged back into the game to check it :D The F1 is a fantastic car, the idea is to ignore its ultra high speed and concentrate on the fact that its quick to get to 150mpg.......I picked up the F1 LM and its served me well. mking2673 02-11-07, 10:42 PM The challenger is my favorite too. :) To get to champion you need to get 450 achievement points (I think). In your house look at what achievements you need to get to that point. Getting to expert happens without really trying, getting champion takes a little intention. NoThru22 02-12-07, 08:49 AM Just to clarify: there was no patch in the past two months that improved steering. I checked last night. I also compared it to the controller, which I've never used in this game, and the steering wheel is a BIG improvement. HeadRusch 02-12-07, 09:02 AM The challenger is my favorite too. :) To get to champion you need to get 450 achievement points (I think). In your house look at what achievements you need to get to that point. Getting to expert happens without really trying, getting champion takes a little intention. Getting to Champion requires you to drive 5000 miles I think.......unless you go for the other achievements like buying up 50 cars or something. I received it..and then decided they should call it the "Get a frickin life" Achievement :) I just wish the customizations were a little bit more hit or miss....because right now you know every challenger you run into will run exactly the same ;) I wish there were more AVSers out there playin this game.....I'd fire this game up more but right now I just fire it up and wind up driving around then...shut it off :) I dont even have an ONLINE life :P <cries to self in corner> Tho I'd like to race with some of you guys.....can you get achievements racing in private races? Aleman 02-12-07, 02:01 PM Game is great. Especially with the wireless racing wheel... while I hated using the wheel in PGR3, I love using it in this game. I find myself just driving around the island. Yesterday I played for about an hour and a half without even completing any races or missions. It's pretty relaxing. formulanerd 02-12-07, 02:21 PM i have this game, first impressions are that it's pretty good, i just havent gotten into it yet. i'd like to but i have too many games to play right now. ooPAYNEoo 02-12-07, 04:15 PM i've got about 2800 miles, and it feels like that took the better part of my life to get to... got grey hairs now and all Trying to explore all roads, navigating to places around the map, just to see that in most cases, there is one little u-turn, or ramp that I didn't cover yet... go to another part of the island and see that there is a whole F**in peninsula that I haven't been to yet? Great another 1000 miles there. I almost get sick driving around, but I do want to get to champ. There is a race track in the southeast that you can't access until you are champ. One time somehow I snuck in, and it was the funnest part of the island... plus i want a crown next to my name. HeadRusch: I beat a guy 5 straight times in instant private challenges and got some achievement. Maybe another if you get 10, then 20...you get more, but usually people start to cheat (cut across off-road)once they figure they just aren't as fast, or they refuse the race... modiGTI 02-12-07, 04:45 PM It's fun just to cruise but what puts me to sleep is the Car Delivery missions....everytime I try to do one thats 18-20 miles I can barley stay awake. =p HeadRusch 02-12-07, 05:06 PM I dig the car delivery missions...they require absolute concentration if you want to get perfect, and you *do* want to get perfect since thats where alot of your money comes from (unless you get a fast car and start doing the cheap races over and over to raise cash). I've done both so I'm not pointing fingers :) In order to explore "all the roads" you dont have to hit every single in-between track connector, you just have to hit all the major road sections..true, you will spend alot of time zoomed in on the map to find sections you haven't raced just to clear them but eventually you'll get the achievement. I forgot that the track isn't open until you reach champion level......the track is ok, but only if you're racing other people, there aren't any SP events there. Also jumping into the airport isn't worth your time since the ground is all gravel, even where its "paved" so you can only go about 100 mph or so....meh. NoThru22 03-16-07, 08:34 PM Just completed the Tour of the Island tonight. Took me 44 minutes and the guy behind me was 6 miles behind. I was close to Champion, so I decided to get the 3 Ferrari achievement. Then I got the free car from the challenge and bought a Corvette and not even realizing it, I got the 10 car achievement, which finally pushed me up to Champion. modiGTI 03-16-07, 10:16 PM I picked up the two new uprgades and it's pretty good so far. I love the F40 and the hardcore mode is really fun, especially for drifting around. DerekinMerrick 03-18-07, 12:17 PM Please answer these two newbie questions about the one player. First, how do you get good amounts of money? I played like 20 races and won 1st 90% of the time and only have like 50,000. The ho's just give you clothes? And after these 20 races now I have to drive like 12 miles for things and the model drives are 8 minutes at one place and you can only go off the road for like 10 seconds. This is totally annoying is this going to change and how can I get more money fast. I can not keep my car on the road at all and I am playing with the wheel. I always end up in the woods all the time after like 5 minutes of a 10 minute race. Thanks HeadRusch 03-18-07, 01:01 PM Pretend its a simulator.....brake is your friend, be conscious of your speed and how fast your car can stop, as well as how it takes a corner. Yeah, money is tough to come by...you can't rack up all the cars in the game in a few days, you have to be very careful what you spend your money on to win races, you'll need a good car for all the different classes. EVentually with a fast car you can find some of the "reach 200 miles an hour on a straightaway" races that can be done over and over for $50-75K per pop, and rack up some money that way, but otherwise its the car delivery missions (completed on perfect, so you get the added bonus money) is how most people rack up the cash. Zeppo 03-18-07, 01:47 PM The easiest way to earn money quickly in the early stages of the game is to do the car delivery missions. Make sure you achieve a 'perfect' by keeping that meter on the left at its full value (i.e. don't go off the road or hit any other cars at all), because a 'perfect' on these car delivery missions is worth an additional 50% of the prize money. That is, if the stated reward is $70K, then you will receive $105K if you get 'perfect,' whereas you will get less than $70K if you are not 'perfect,' how much less depending on how low that meter on the left is when you complete the delivery. Some of these missions are quite long, so you have to be patient and drive carefully, but if you want to build up your cash quickly this is the best thing to do. Once you have achieved the 'champion' status, there are a few speed challenges as HeadRusch mentions that take next to no time at all but pay off very well. Unlike the car delivery missions, these can be done many times over, so you can build up a lot of cash quickly and easily, but again, these are only available once you're at 'champion' level. The models and the hitchhikers don't give you cash, they only give you coupons for the clothes. However, completing certain numbers of these earn you achievements (as can buying up full collections of clothes from certain vendors), and the achievement points are what determine your in-game level, so they are worth doing. Earning 'perfect' on these just gets you a bonus of clothing coupons, but you can do these challenges many times over, so you can always go back to get that 'perfect' later if you want. This isn't true for the car delivery missions, which once you've done them disappear, so it's very important, if you want to buildup your cash, to do these 'perfectly' every time. Tarheel72 03-19-07, 02:16 PM Maybe its just me, but there are some times that I think this game is very unforgiving. For instance, I am sitting at a red light minding my own business and some guy comes flying down the street and rams into me from behind. I never even know a car was coming until he plowed into me, and even if I did there wasn't much I could do since there were cars in front of me. Then a cop shows up and gives me a ticket! Or I am driving very careful to make a perfect delivery. Out of the blue an approaching car turns right in front of me as if I am invisible. There goes my perfect delivery score. very frustrating. I pretty much put the game up and quit playing for awhile. HeadRusch 03-19-07, 02:26 PM Yeah, I've noticed a penchant for other cars to have accidents close, if not with, you while doing car delivery missions. Its not like destruction derby or anything but I try to look around when approaching intersections, sometimes the cars dont stop for you. I also dont bother waiting at red lights, I just cautiously go through them. But I've never had one actually turn into me deliberately, I've had ones turn close to me but I was usually the one out of the lane.....tho sometimes they'll slow down..but not STOP when you are inf ront of them, its almost like the game 'expects' you to get out of the way. One time I did a 25 mile car delivery mission only to find out after I completed it that when I stopped the car, one of my tires must have touched the side of the road when I braked..and I lost like 1 point, and thusly about 45 grand in that last 1 second, after driving perfect for like 1/2 an hour >=O The one thing I hate is the "oncoming traffic" AI routine..where as soon as you cross the center line, its like you trip an invisible countdown that will eventually place oncoming headlights directly in front of you. Its not random, its like "within 5 seconds" there will be another car heading towards you. I think the smart move is to master the right-hand pass, or only pass cars on the left like you would in real life...in short "leapfrog" fashion....pass one, duck back into lane..pass two, duck back into lane...try to pass 3 and you're pushing it :) gamegod2x 03-21-07, 05:34 PM Is there still a AVS club? If so can someone send me a invite? Im looking to play some point to point races etc. Its a great game but its better when you have a group to play with. Anyone currently playing? I will be playing on and off for the next few weeks, send me a invite if you want to race. Peace. |
