View Full Version : Just took the jump into CRT need help!!!
swiftden 12-05-06, 02:10 AM Hello
I am from South Australia and have just picke dup my first crt projector.
Firstly i apologise for my extreme lack of knowledge but i am looking for some enlightment.
I picked up a JVC VX-D1050 PSN. Can any one help me out with how to start setting it up ???

Mark_A_W 12-05-06, 04:21 AM Umm, never heard of it...
spotmatic 12-05-06, 09:26 AM At least the outside is 100% the same as the Panasonic PT-105. Here's the pic from Curt Palme's site:
http://www.curtpalme.com/images/+PanasonicPT105.jpg
Don't know if the JVC has the same optics. but the Panasonic has Liquid Coupled tubes and can do 480p. The Panasonic is, as Curt called it, a Sony 1031 on steroids.
Hope this helps!

swiftden 12-07-06, 07:48 AM As you can see from the pictures my projector doesnt have half of the buttons etc that the panasonic suggested has. It does look very much the same tho ? any ideas of where i can get a manual??

Curt Palme 12-07-06, 08:47 AM Actually it looks like a PT 105 on steroids.
I'm guessing it's a later model, that looks like digital convergence, the PT 105 is analog.
You're on your own on this one, I know nothing about this set...:(
swiftden 12-08-06, 10:59 PM Well i have managed to get it to power up etc and have projected an image on the wall from the dvd player via Svid conection.
Should i be using a line doubler or scaler ?? to improve the quality ?? Now i just have to work out how to focus and converge this thing. so far so good thought. just can see a couple of everthing eg Looks like writting has its own shadow.
Any help is appreciated.
Pick up the roof mount bracket that i am gettng made on Tuesday and then will be using some unistrut to mount it in the room:)
draganm 12-08-06, 11:36 PM Should i be using a line doubler or scaler ?? to improve the quality ??
well you could use a scaler, but it might be hard to justify a new $1K scaler. also, you can't input any upscaled signal or even progressive scan through the s-video port. Look at the Helios 4000 DVD player. Hook it up with a VGA-to-5BNC cable to the PJ's RGB inputs. Note: RGB is NOT component, so don't even bother trying that. :p
Sonynut 12-08-06, 11:57 PM Did this projector come with a remote to converge it with? If there are no controls on th PJ itself to converge with, they MUST be on the remote.......
I am at a loss to suggest what remote to get(even aftermarket), or in the case of an aftermarket remote, where to get the codes. :(
swiftden 12-09-06, 03:06 AM No remote :( got no idea myself still havent tried the system selector button to see what that does?
menu only controls brightness, contrast and colour not sure what the sysem selector does yet to try that
swiftden 12-09-06, 03:41 AM Just checked the Sytem selector and it does the pal/ ntsc etc . nothing else. the following pictures are a screen from my dvd player playing "Highlander" Screen is 80 inches tall and 110 inches wide and yes it is upside down at the moment due to not being mounted on the ceiling. As you can see the writting etc has what looks like a shadow(convergence needed???). also have not tried to focus it yet either not quite sure how.
Note:- also on a gyprock wall painted cream !

swiftden 12-09-06, 03:53 AM The main difference i can see from the pictures in the tech manual for the Pt-105 and the JVC i have is that i do not have the second set of controls under the dooron the bottom. In here the Pt-105 has all the convergence controls. which mine doesnt???????
Any ideas on who i could contact in an effort to find out more???
The shadow you are describing is definitly the convergence. Once you get all the colours line up it will dissapear.
Since the unit has no convergence controls on it (did you look undre the hood?) it must need a remote. Try calling JVC and asking them if they can mail you one or maybe suggest a replacement. Don't count on it.
Also there are some universal remotes can learn what remote codes to use. LIRC for linux has a learn mode which will try every know command. It would take forever to do but it might be your only sollution.
good luck and keep us posted.
swiftden 12-10-06, 06:04 AM Mr gogo please tell me more about this learning remote and the prog needed to make it work out the right codes.
Is that a plug on the front labeled "Remote" ? If so, perhaps you need a wired remote like an Ampro ?
You're going to need to contact the professional products division of JVC service and hope above hope that it has some manuals or something to guide you.
Perhaps you can control it via RS232 through that remote port if you can find a manual ??
Is there an IR receiver window ANYWHERE on it ? If not, you are not likely looking for an IR remote, but a wired one...
If you want to use it "as-is", just flip it over and pull it back/move it forward till your picture is converged....
Swiftden I'm afraid I really don't know much about them. I remember reading somewhere that someone had baught a remote that you simply aimed at your appliance's IR sensor and it tried codes until whatever it was turned on! Now this is sertainly an options but nono74 is right. You have to find the IR sensor if there is one!!
And I didn't see one on any of your pics but there are two remote slots 1 and 2 ... the big one looks like a DB25 slot which might be a RS232 serial port but it also might be a parallel port (serial ports are usually DB9 not DB25). The smaller one might be some sort or proprietary plug. If it is a RS232 then you might be able to get it to work with a computer but without some programming skill good luck unless you can find the original prog.
Seriously call JVC's profesional division its atleast worth a try and if they can help will be a lot easier then anything we can come up with hacking remotes.
swiftden 12-10-06, 05:56 PM yes it does have two remote ports one looks like a head phone jack the other id the female d25 socket. it also has a clear looking little window which could be IR next to the head phone socketone.
so how do i use the RS232???? will other remote work in for this porjector?? eg one for a nec or another brand?
swiftden 12-10-06, 06:41 PM Right, found out that this projector was manufactured in 1991. I have full service manul and user manuals coming for the projector. Including electical diagrams etc in A3, A4 and A5.
Cost of service manul was $44. Cost of user manual was $11.
If ever you are looking for a manual contact the following they have a huge range and very helpfull>>>> http://www.hcsd.com.au
or call 0357810955 and speak to the manager Stephen Rendell. Very helpfull
So you should be in business when your books arrive.
Its not likely a remote for another brand of projector will work unless yours is an "oem" of another brand. Are there any stickers inside to indicate if it was actually manfactured by JVC, or some other maker ?
Dave Lister 12-10-06, 10:21 PM G'day mate! Another South Aussie here too, welcome to the forum.
Was this one I recently saw on eBay?
It looks to me that it will need a remote to set up propperly (no trim pots on the boards) but if you are willing to make do with the size picture it is currently set up for then as suggested all you need to do is move it back and forwards until the pictures are aligned.
There may still be some parts not aligned propperly though as you will need to do the complete setup to get the best picture.
Fucus controls are found on the lenses under the board with the speaker on it that is on top of the lenses.
Usually the back lens controls centre focus and the front lens controls the edge focus, start with the centre fucus and then do edge focus.
When you first adjust the focus for all 3 pictures you may find that the pictures go slightly out of alignment and you will need to move the projector again to realign them and then re-focus the lenses, and repeat until you find the right position for the projector.
Call JVC and ask if they have the RS232 software for it, from what I have read about other projectors like my Retroblock Graphics D808S is that the RS232 setup is better than the service menu setup.
Someone you migh want to call in Adelaide is Ian at Adelaide Video Screens 0412 841 050, he helped a mate of mine with his Sony VPH-600QM, a much older projector and an analogue setup type too (no digital convergence) but he might be able to help with yours.
swiftden 12-11-06, 06:13 AM yes it was the one on ebay your saw recently. It is in very good condition from what i can tell. sadly it did not come with a remote. ill give what you said a go and will call Ian in adelaide and see what he can tell me.
Thanks for all the support every one i will tell you what i find out as i go but please keep the very appreciated help coming.
With the focus you are talking about do i need to cover the other two lights and focus them one at a time?
Guess more will be revealed when i get the service books etc.
Dave Lister 12-11-06, 11:56 PM Focus is usually carried out by switching off the red and blue tubes, fucussing green and then switching off green, switching on red and focussing it, switching off red and switching on blue and focussing it.
If you can't find the cutoff switches on the boards (being digital setup it might not have switches on the board, might be in a menu) then you can simply cover the other 2 lenses that aren't being focussed, just as you were thinking.
If it came with lens covers then use those otherwise just thick cardboard, no need to blacken the cardboard though it will stop the light, it doesn't need to seal all light around the lens just block it from getting to the screen so you can see each colour easily.
Sonynut 12-12-06, 01:23 AM If you are going to try the "pull the pj back till the picture lines up" method, I would not adjust focus at all... changing the lens focus will screw up the convergence also..
Finding the distance from the screen where the colors line up is probably the best bet until you get a remote to reconverge. when you find the point where the colors line up(converge), your focus will also be on since you will be at the same distance from the screen as the last installation. Keep in mind though that since the Pj appears to have been ceiling mounted before, the the PJ will have to be upside down with the belly of the unit level. Maybe put it on a high stand, setting on its top, with something to hold the rear of it up and level the belly....
Kindof a pain yes to position the PJ as such, and you may not be able to match your screen size, but at least it will be watchable till you get a remote.
Sonynut 12-12-06, 01:30 AM Just saw an auction on ebay for a sony 1020.. the auction has an error(wrong tubes pictured for a 1020, lol... BUT, the pic they have shows a JVC just like yours! Maybe they have a remote for it :)
Its by this site, see if they can help..
www.videoprojectors.com.au
Hopefully this might be the break you are looking for..
swiftden 12-12-06, 06:39 AM Still no luck on finding a remote im running out of options. I feel that i have been ripped off as the guy who sold it on ebay said it just need to be converged and taht i would just need to fiddle with it. he did not tell me that it needed the remote to do this and that it was impossible to do without it. And considering they are not available any more this is a major problem. makes the thing practically a boat anchor. I tried the moving back and forawrd and could not get itclose to converging. the picture i posted is the best i can do. its a real shame as it looks bright and clear apart from the convergence:(
swiftden 12-12-06, 06:49 AM found this on ebay but would hate to pay that price for it especially when i do not know if it would work

Have you tried using the PT-105 codes with a universal remote or a PC-connected blaster?
swiftden 12-12-06, 08:04 AM axatax please explain to me how this is done and where do i get the codes??? what sort of remote or "pc-connected blaster?????" do i need???
Dave Lister 12-12-06, 08:32 AM swiftden, the link doesn't work, do you have the item number?
I would call JVC and ask for the tech that has been there the longest and ask if he can get you a copy of the PC control software, if it has the RS232 port.
kschmit2 12-12-06, 12:45 PM item number: 9737316969
swiftden 12-12-06, 05:12 PM i tried that and they didnt know what i was on about :(
Dave Lister 12-13-06, 12:20 AM I can't believe the seller wants so much for that remote!
I had to check to make sure it wasn't the seller who sold you the projector being an a$$#o!e and listing the remote separately to get more money, it wasn't though.
I don't know what to suggest other than get a refund from the seller, he was in Adelaide too wasn't he?
swiftden 12-13-06, 01:00 AM yes but is currently stating not his problem :(
kschmit2 12-13-06, 03:44 AM yes but is currently stating not his problem :(
Unfortunately I have to agree with the seller :(
He clearly listed the PJ w/o a remote control.

With such a description it behooves the buyer to investigate whether or not a remote control is available.
It is not something the seller has to worry about.
It would be totally different had he indicated that any "universal" remote should work, or possibly not mentioned a remote at all.
If this projector is a Panasonic OEM, it definitely needs a remote for setup. There is a ccf file for a pronto on remotecentral.com with the codes for later Panasonic CRT projectors, specifically the 1083 and 1085. Those codes and setup procedures may, I stress may, be similar.

swiftden 12-13-06, 05:16 PM kschmit2 i spoke to the seller and he said i just needed to fiddle with the projector to get it to converge
swiftden 12-14-06, 12:13 AM Well lets see. I got the manual i paid for delivered today. I got a call yesterday from JVC rep in Sydney who said he has also sent me a manual for free :( so bought the 1st one for nothing lol. Any way he told me to call him once i got the manual and that he would see what he could do for me. He looked up the remote and found no stock in Australia. But unlike the other reps i spoke to he searched the Japan data base and found 2 in stock . YES NOT ONE BUT TWO!!!
Remote part number is RM-C1000E or (V-EUR50651 in Japan) cost is $125.00
He said it will arrive the day after XMAS but before New Years :)
So time will tell. Very Helpful guy. (Nick Spyrou JVC Sydney 0293708856)
Just in case anyone else gets one of these and need help feel free to contact me only to happy to help anyone else.
Dave Lister 12-14-06, 12:33 PM YAY!!! :)
Great news!
Pity you got news of a free manual after paying for one, maybe you can do what someone on ebay has done and sell it, or maybe just keep it until someone here wants it.
Looks like you will have a package to open on Boxing Day. :p
swiftden 01-10-07, 02:55 AM Well
It's been a long time coming and was a bit frustrating but thanks to one very helpfull tech at Hagen Myer(JVC) i now have in my hand a remote. note the one pic shows the front basic controls. the other shows the advanced controls used to converge etc. I have only had a little play with it and have already worked out how to converge the picture. with a few hours work and patients i feel i will get a great picture. looks better already. In the middle of painting the wall at the moment and then i will begin fine tuning :)
Thanks for everyones input

pcCinema 01-10-07, 08:14 AM Is that a LC machine? I know some panasonic was LC but don't recall which it was.
Either way I'm sure you'll be happy now that you can actually get it set up. There is no cheating proper setup. Don't skip the manuals instruction on physical toe in, raster centering and etc and just overcompensate with convergence.
No convergence zones should be near max , and if they are you need to do more setup before convergence.
I say this because you obviously have a rare pj and you really don't want to burn up a board and be stuck unable to find parts and service.
Troy
swiftden 01-16-07, 02:47 AM Well i have been mucking around with the convergence etc. All i can say is wow what a lot of buttons and settings. trying to get the grids for each tube to lay in the exact same spot. but having done some mucking around look at the difference so far. image is using a standard dvd player pluged straight into the projector via SVID

swiftden 07-13-09, 10:12 PM Hello,
I havnt been on here for ages. I got this projector to work great and had been using it for movies only when i had the time. Had to move due to work and now dont have a cinema room let alone a lounge room big enough.
So The JVC VX-D1050 PSN is for sale.
Since i got it i sourced a remote from Japan and a full manul on setup etc .
Mounting bracket made for it as well.
Got it set up, calibrated and focused.
So sadly it has to go. It is at Lameroo SA or can take to Murray Bridge. Is not set up at the moment but could plug the dvd into it and shoot at a wall just wont be in focus.
Looking for $650.00 .
