View Full Version : Good Wireless headphones?
Stryker412 12-05-06, 08:51 AM I'm looking for a set of good surround sound wireless headphones. I want to be able to play the 360 at night and not disturb anyone. I was looking at the Sennheiser 130's. Are they my best bet? I'm looking for something under $200.
I was wondering about this too. How are the Sennheisers? Haven't researced these yet.

The wife got me these for Christmas. I can't wait!

I have 'em and over paid for it at Tweeter. They're good at separating sound (surround sound? Not really) for stereo, but since they work with a radio signal you can hear a hiss in the background. I use them for night time listening on the 360 and movie watching and they work fine even with the hissing. These are my first wireless headphones, so I don't have anything to compare them to, but I like them.

According to what I've read they're IR not RF, so why would you get a hiss?

Luv my Pio too. Simply one the best wireless headphones I have used.
stryker,
Checked several sites that all say it is RF, still reviews sound decent. Couple websites have it under $100-Think I'll bite at that price.

Where are they under $100? The lowest I've seen is $280.

Gotcha I was confused since everyone started talking about the Pioneer's.
Yeah sorry i guess i was confused too. Sennheisers are more in my price range though, so thats where i was looking.
mtmra70 12-08-06, 10:25 AM Weird, I am having the same thought for my 360. I use my Sony XBR's IR headphones, but those things hurt my head.
I read some of the Amazon reviews about the Sennheier 130s and 140s.....they didnt get such great reviews. FM hiss and skechy range.
I think I may dig out my old JVC 900mhz headphones and try those out if no one can come up with a rock solid RF headphone.
Chodite 12-08-06, 11:05 AM Careful w/those Pioneers though. There is a warning about pregnant women and some others who shouldn't handle the base because of a lead wire *??*
mtmra70 12-08-06, 11:10 AM So if you dont want your wife to get pregnant and need an excuse, buy the Pioneers? Sounds good to me! :D

I have those too, and they're insane! They sound just like home theatre, I'm not kidding.

Any issues with a lack of bass? That seems to be the only thing I'll miss is some hardcore rumbling.

The sound of the base is fine.........but obviously you're not going to feel it like you would with a real HT subwoofer.
HangEmHi 12-08-06, 12:10 PM They are more than I want to spend but how are they?
I like them a lot, in terms of the sound quality and the comfort - I can wear them for quite a long time without 'ear fatigue.' The IR signal is pretty wide, so unless you go way to one side, I have no problems with them. I like that they work on 2 AA batteries, since I always have a couple NiMHs charged up for my 360 controller.
I wish there was a battery meter of some sort, because you find out the batteries are dying very suddenly, and the only other problem is that until the wireless 360 headset, there was no good way to use the Pioneers and do Xbox Live. The wireless headset is small enough to make it possible, but it's not ideal for long stretches.
Still, it's a purchase I am very happy with in the 2+ years I've had them.

dragoor 12-08-06, 01:29 PM Can't tell you how fun the Pioneer SE-DIR800C's are. Playing Madden, I can hear what players say as they are walking away after the play is done. Just awesome!! I highly recommend!!!

My biggest holy **** factor was when I demoed Revenge of the Sith on DVD.......man those headphones kick ass! Also when playing COD2 multiplayer, you can hear people coming up behind you, above you in a building, etc......it's crazy.
elvisahmed 12-08-06, 04:26 PM Yeah Pio Rocks and the best thing is you can hook up even a wired set into the receiever that is provided with teh Pio. The wired headphones need to be of good quality (effecient) and you can play GOW on co-op or better still get another wireless set from audiocubes or ebay and have double the fun. These also work with the somewhat better in my opinion SIR 2000 model headset.
Can't recommend these enough.

This answers my question. I may have to look into these as well. I play COD2 and need to know if someone is sneaking behind me. I wasnt sure headphones were capable of this.
Rhegaana 12-08-06, 04:51 PM **Dumb question alert***
Can you use the headphones when using the hd dvd drive? Its for the same late night, don't want to upset the neighbors, movie watching experience.

Yes you sure can. I don't know about others but I preferred the normal DTS track more on these headphone compared to the DD+ that was is a requirement for HD DVD movies like on Riddick.
Maybe to clarify things as long as you can get a optical/coaxial or even stero output from the device you are in business (stereo is decoded using Prologic if I am correct so a digital output is preferred for sure)

I also thought the DTS soundtrack on Riddick sounded better than the DD+......even though the 360 converts all sound tracks to 640 kbps on HD DVD. The sound was awesome on Riddick!
maverick0716 12-08-06, 05:05 PM Oh, another awesome feature these headphones have is that you can plug any other pair of headphones into the jack on the Pioneer receiver and also enjoy 5.1 surround sound.......good for if someone else wants to watch a movie with you.

I picked up these headphones about a month ago and echo HangEm's statements. They produce amazing sound quality and are very comfortable to wear. Its nice to be able to enjoy the 360 experience and HD-DVDs late at night w/o disturbing the g/f or neighbors. The inclusion of a battery meter would have been nice, as I've had the batteries die unexpectedly. The receiver does include a charging station for two NiMHs, which makes it easy to have spares ready for when they eventually die.
It is difficult to play Live with these on, but its do-able, just not for a long period of time because it gets uncomfortable. When it gets too uncomfortable just prop one side of the headphones up for a few minutes. You won't be disappointed with your purchase! :D
btf1980 12-08-06, 05:47 PM Pioneer SE-DIR800C like everyone has suggested. Expensive, but well worth it. :)
Got them originally because the girlfriend complained about noise from gaming/movies. Now, I rarely even use my surround set-up, I use the headphones 90% of the time. The only time I don't use it is when I have company over.

hdmi4ever 12-08-06, 05:54 PM With the Pioneers, how much can you turn your head up, down, left, or right before losing the signal? 30 degrees? 90? 180?
I remember seeing these or some other infrared headphones advertised some months ago, but immediately dismissed them because I thought I'd have to sit still with my head rigidly in one position to avoid losing the signal, just as I have to point an IR remote in a very specific direction for it to work.
btf1980 12-08-06, 05:56 PM I've walked to grab the phone (12 - 13 ft away from transmitter) and still had great signals.
hdmi4ever 12-08-06, 05:59 PM I've walked to grab the phone (12 - 13 ft away from transmitter) and still had great signals.I'm not worried about distance, I'm worried about angles. Did you turn 90 degrees to walk to the phone?
btf1980 12-08-06, 06:05 PM Oh, got you, that's not a problem either. Though i'm not in the habit of twisting my head around, but it hasn't been a problem. I'll test it out later tonight and let you know, but I have never had a problem with signals in any position that i've been in, and i'm certainly not sitting rigidly with my head straight.
Stryker412 12-08-06, 06:56 PM When hooked to your receiver can you adjust the volume through the receiver or do you always have to use the Pio receiver to do volume?
Also, how is the sound leakage? Can someone sitting next to you still hear everything you do?

There's a volume dial right on the headphones. You can hear a little bit of sound coming out, but not bad at all.

The surround sound headphones that actually have 5 speakers in each ear cup don't actually sound as good. The reason for this is because the sound feels like it's in your head instead of coming from around the room. The Pioneer headphones that are mentioned in this thread use a technology called "Dolby Headphone" which makes it sound like there are speakers placed away from you......and you can even select the room size (sound room, Home Theatre, or Small Cinema)
Mits mania 12-12-06, 10:05 AM Any chance you could use this headphone with an IR repeater. My setup is completley hidden and I don't have an IR line of sight.
EskimoPie 12-12-06, 01:10 PM I would highly doubt it... at the very best you would get large lip-sync lagging, but I don't think it would work at all.

nocalbruin 04-15-07, 09:21 PM For a wired option, can anyone compare the Pioneer headphones to the Tritton AX360 headphones? These are also 5.1 and got an excellent review on teamxbox.com (http://hardware.teamxbox.com/reviews/general/60/Audio-Xtreme-360-Headphones/p1/) .
Also, they can be had for about 100 after rebate from newegg.

beatnikdaddio 12-12-07, 07:16 AM Sennheiser 130's
i have these and would recommend them.
one thing i really like is the ability to add more headphones to the transmitter. we have 3 sets so we can all wear a pair while playing. it works great for rock band, guitar hero, etc.
I have the Pioneer DIRSE800 and base unit and then another set called the 2000 that I don't think made it to the US. www.audiocubes.com has both I believe. There isn't an angle issue typically as the IR signals tend to bounce all over.
Multiple units do work (duh) and are compatible with one base unit so if you need to be quiet, you want to play something loud with wife/friend/dog and money isn't an issue, they're a nice option. I wanted IR over RF due to interference issues.
I think the 800 base unit is prefered over the 2000 base unit, but most people like the 2000 headphones over the 800 (but it might just be a size thing). I find the 2000s to be more comfortable.
chiliDog 12-12-07, 11:06 AM I was wondering about this too. How are the Sennheisers? Haven't researced these yet.
I had the 130s and returned them because the sound quality just wasn't there. There was almost no bass, there was a constant variable hiss based on how my head was turned at the time. I found myself concentrating on minimizing the hiss instead of the game. I ended up exchanging them for some decent wired headphones (Sennheiser HD280 Pro) and got a 20 foot extension.
A friend of mine has the Turtle Beach Ear Force X2 wireless headphones and the sound quality is pretty good for gaming purposes and has a built in mic that works well. If I had a need for wireless, I would probably go for those or the new X3 model.

any wireless headphone is NOT for the picky audiophile. EVERY set on the market today has a 'hiss'.
why do you think bose has never entered the wireless headphone market? because the technology isnt there yet to have the clean sound they are known for.
i find the slight hiss in the 130 set barely noticable after proper adjustment of inputs... and, after trying several wireless sets, 130's hiss is the most minimal of ANY set i tried. if youre picky, dont buy a wireless set, stick with a wire because that is the ONLY way you will not have even the slightest hiss.
oh, and my bass sounds great too. i love the sennheiser 130's... i got my tunes, they sound great and i CAN MOVE AROUND anywhere in my house without being tethered to my receiver.

I wasn't putting down your choice in headphones, I was just saying why I don't care for them because the original poster asked specifically about that model. Also, NONE of the IR based headphones have hiss, and I don't "move around my house" when I play games on the 360... I just want the best sound for a reasonable price. To each his own.

i quoted you, but wasnt directing that at you specifically... my comments were in general, sorry if you got that impression. ANY wireless headphone thread always has complaints about hiss... YES, even the the IR ones, at least the clarion and sennheiser brands i tried did.
i DO move around while playing... be it striking a rocker pose during rock band, walking around, changing seats, running to the fridge for a drink or catching one of the kiddos as theyre running around.... but maybe that's just me? i dont like being tied to anything and was willing to sacrifice a little sound quality to have that perk.
chiliDog 12-12-07, 01:05 PM striking a rocker pose =)
Hadn't thought about that. There will be mucho wires already with that game. I got RB "for my kids" so I can't test that out till Christmas 8(

I bought a set of the Trittons and they felt like I was wearing a helmet after using my Pioneers.
I bought them for LIVE use but find that just wearing the 360 plastic headset around my next with the mic turned up to my mouth.. works fine (wearing my pioneers of course).
As for multiple headsets, the pioneers work good for this also. I purchased a second set of just the cans (from audiocubes I believe) shortly after I first started using my pioneers.. and both both headsets work great at the same time. My teenager and I can watch movies late at night and not disturb the rest of the family.
Bass? the bass isn't very deep, but they still hold thier own and put a movie theatre sound experience to shame. If you are expecting a thumping bass from these you might be dissapointed.
I've got ~$600 invested in my pioneers with the extra set of cans and they were worth every penny. Now with the price down in the $250 range, they are a steal.

you might wanna go ahead and open that so you can get a working guitar by xmas morning.
i've already had 2 broken (one of the replacements they sent actually broke too) and 4 of my friends have as well. the guitars that shipped with the game have been failing in large numbers, but that's a whole other thread! :(
(search 'rockband double strum' or 'gee, this rockband guitar sucks' for more info... just kidding about that last one, but the double strum search will yield more than you want to know)
:D

I just bought these last week and I also have to agree they sound really good. The other thread on headphones seemed to slam these but I am pleasantly surprised in the sound quality. I bought them with the thought of returning them but they will stay. I mush prefer having the live headset built in instead of rigging up some contraption. I do consider myself to be somewhat of an audiophile and was nervous about the sound quality but they get a thumbs up from me!

They are slammed cause for the money you could do much better.. & have build & quality issues..

While I agree they are not mind blowing. They are wireless and the ones that yourself and the others have been mentioning in the other thread cost a hell of alot more than 99 bucks. Those weren't wireless, didn't have a microphone either. To me, if you want an all in one solution, you can't find any better for the price!
I'll let you know if I have any quality problems but so far I am happy!
