View Full Version : Iamm NTD36HD by Novatron
Hello to all European AVSForum members,
I recently purchased from eBay Germany the excellent HD media player by the Korean company "Novatron" called IAMM NTD36HD or IAMM NTD-36 HD and would like to start this thread on issues that you faced and resolved, including comments related to this player *only*.
It appears that a player with similar looks and specifications has hit the US market under the name Eureka LX350HD and some US sites mention also the presence of Ximeta's NDAS support, it seems.
So it would be interesting to hear from european owners of the IAMM as well as any american friend who alread owns the Eureka player.
Your input is welcome!

Latest firmware, as of 28th March 2007:

you can find the french version off the lx 350hd in this site: rivertech.fr
as you can see we can find this product in different marks...

i upgrade my mediaplayer to the 1.1.140 version but i have the same bugs ( when i press the remote buttons MOVIE, MUSIC, PHOTO) they link me to the root of the HDD instead of the directories, have you encountered this bug???
Hello artcat,
I was under the impression that these menu selections were not meant to point to directories, but simply do a file filtering. That is, if you press e.g. MUSIC, and browse the drive, AVI or MPG etc. files will not be displayed.
I checked the manual and you seem to be right: on page 17, they suggest we do that. I will try this tonight; never really gave any shot because I am mostly using it to browse the network for videos.
Hello konsti,
another problem is the streaming function , when i browse the network sometimes the mediaplayer can see shared folders and the workstations and sometimes it can't see anything
any idea...
concerning the NDAS have you got any solution, cause it can be very useful for downloading the files to the hdd instead of travelling the mediaplayer to the nearest workstation and plugin via the usb wire...
Hello again,
1. Indeed, proper network discovery can take more than a few seconds. What I do is I select again REFRESH on the menu, and I see both shared drives of mine (they are network drives, like Western Digital's "NetCenter"--I am expecting the Synology DS-106e soon, will write more). This is the same with WIRED or WIRELESS connection. It just takes its time ;)
2. Regarding the NDAS feature: I have installed the driver that came with the CD-ROM, it is the same version as the one found on Ximeta's website (http://www.ximeta.com/) and I was able to "mount" the HDD of the Iamm as a USB device on My Computer. You need to enter the "device-key(s)" (specific for your hardware MAC addresses, found at the bottom of the device) and then the "write-key" in order to connect and transfer data over the network. Did you already try this?
Speed was not something I was ecstatic about, but I guess the 5-port 10/100 D-Link switch I am using is not of great quality... I must check this with a friend's switch (not hub, though) and perhaps a direct, cross-linked ethernet cable (between PC and IAMM) for 100% speed testing!
The drivers can be found here (http://www.ximeta.com/web/support/download/windows_xp/drivers/v3x/index.php).
Let me know if you need further help.
I am posting three images from the menus of the Iamm and the latest firmware. These are captures using an LCD Bravia 40 inch set, a tripod and my faithful DSC-717 camera, to be used in an article I am writing for a Greek magazine. The Iamm is connected via component at 720p.
...Just to give a feel to people that consider buying the Iamm!
congratulation for your pictures,
my mediaplayer is exactly the same as yours but from another korean reseller RIVERTECH, but i 'haven't got the NDAS feature, so i upgrade with the novatron firmware revision 1.1.140 and i installed the ndas software, but i need the device id and the write key...
the problem is that the trademark RIVERTECH has no technical support in France, so where i can find this keys...
So you say you've upgraded your Rivertech to the IAMM firmware and it worked? Amazing. But how are you sure that the NDAS functionality is there? There is no mention on the menu screens. Can you still browse the network?
In order to check if you do have NDAS in your box, you need the device ID and write key. These are related to the MAC address of your device, and usually given by the manufacturer as a "sticker" at the bottom of the device. Mine were there, at least (one for WIRED and one for WIRELESS).
Where did you buy yours? PixMania? What is the exact model number? Do you have WiFi connectivity?
FIRMWARE UPDATE: The IAMM site posted the new firmware, version 1.1.142
It's a shame no-one else seems to bother posting his/her reviews and comments on the IAMM :(
I should have known, but I think it's true: the NDAS feature on the Iamm is software-based. I was considering buying the RAPSODY N35 prior to discovering the Iamm, and the N35 features hardware NDAS support, making it even faster.
I thought that the network behaviour of the IAMM was slow, but now it explains it. Moving files TO the Iamm takes quite some time; 3000 KB/sec (maximum achieved) on a 100Mbit network... and I thought it was my ethernet switch!
phil42a 12-22-06, 05:43 PM Hi,
I just got the same device under the brand Cibox. NDAS functionality is supported and I have already mounted the disk as a remote wireless device on two different machines. Same problems as for some of you :
- Takes some time to detect remote PC shared resources (but finds them in the end)
- Rather low information throughput over 54g (max 5MB/s) sufficient for streaming divx and midres Mpgs in both direction
- Haven't checked the wired connection so far, but from what I read above, looks like a better transmit rate is not to be expected.
I connected My Cibox to my 32" Sharp LCD using a DVI HDMI cable in auto DVI mode (current mode is 1080i), pictures are really brilliant and sharp ! a real pleasure to watch my DVD collection.
- One disappointment concerning still picture display : they rather look blurr with step effects when resolution is above 2Mpix. Did any one check this functionallity using other display modes (720p Yuv, 1366x768 VGA....)
clasami 12-23-06, 10:46 AM Just consider for a moment if Novatron had decided to implement Upnp so that the IAMM could connect to Twonkymedia and do internet radio, collect video and audio files sorted by genre and other categories. Instead, they embarked on an NDAS project that really is not of any use at the speed that a software solution provides. Unfortunately, the manufacturer (Novatron) is not listening to customers at all, does not even reply to inquiries. That, of course, also means that a better scaler for JPEGs will probably never be introduced, leaving us with a rather pricy toy that plays videos well but really does not live up to expectations otherwise.
Happy Holidays,
Michael
Hello clasami, phil42a, SEASON GREETINGS!
You are both right. Regarding the IAMM network capabilities, the NDAS feature is just OK for basic needs, and the uPNP could had come in handy. I am facing a problem with the Synology DS-106e file server (NAS) and the IAMM refuses to see the shared folders contents.
I noticed (via the wireless AP) that the IAMM obtains an IP address, but provides no network/workgroup device name! This renders it INVISIBLE on the network, and you can only PING it or connect via NDAS. So my investment on the (supposedly) best NAS server, is a waste. I can't see any files.
And indeed, NOVATRON just ignores my comments, for a third time I wrote an e-mail. I guess if they actually receive those e-mails or if they go to some spam mailbox ;-)
Did anyone else try to setup a file server, except their computer?
And yes, my IAMM is connected via component to my 40" Bravia LCD at 720p and the photos are BLURRY. Amazingly mediocre scaler (software, too).
Konsti
clasami 12-27-06, 03:53 PM For some reason, the IAMM has no problem to see my NSLU2 NAS with the attached USB drives (5 total). Works like a charm.
Michael
phil42a 12-30-06, 07:19 AM Season greetings to you all !
I upgraded my Cibox to the latest firmware avalaible on the novatron site (1.1.142). The Cibox logo on the welcome screen is now replaced by novatron (of course...Hope I will not experience problem with the unit, Cibox after sales might not appreciate... :D ).
Apart from this I can now read original DVD title from an attached USB DVD drive :) (good feature since I no longer need my previous DVD player which I now intend to sell).
Surprisingly the Wireless throughput seems to be a bit higher (not that much though) I can now expect to downlod a Complete DVD rip in about 3 hours  with this firmware revision (the original CIBOX was 1.1.131).
Guys, some info on using the IAMM with the Synology DS-106e server.
The IAMM can access open/public folders on my MacOS X and Windows as GUEST, i.e. no read restrictions.
However, the latest firmware (http://www.synology.com/enu/support/download.php) for the Synology DS-106e that came with the server (namely, version 2.0.1-3.0368 dated 2006/06/29) does not allow the IAMM to access public folders, despite the fact that they are accessed as GUEST for username.
The problem is that the IAMM does not have a network name, and apparently, the Synology NAS doesn't like it (so far).
I sent an e-mail to the guys at Synology and they allowed me to participate in a beta firmware programme. The beta firmware (version 2.01-3.0424) still doesn't solve this problem...
Will post more as I go.

krinderb 01-14-07, 01:28 PM Hi,
i have a problem with my ntd36hd and was hoping some one could tell me,or tell me why i am getting the problem.
Basically the problem is that i have a 500gb HD in my ntd36hd and whenever i start the ntd36hd the HD is not picked up the HD icon is not active, but if i re-start the ntd36hd right away the HD is picked up and works fine.
I'm thinking that the the ntd36hd boots up and checks for the HD before the HD is ready. i'm probly wrong but it would be interesting to know if anyone else has had this problem or knows why it is occurring
antivirus 01-14-07, 05:52 PM your harddrive is jumpered as master ? or as single drive ? checkit..

krinderb 01-14-07, 06:12 PM its set as master i've double and tripple checked i've also tried setting as single device... same problem with both settings

Good day to all the NTD36-HD fans!
1. I have good news: the Synology DS-106e file server now works perfectly with the IAMM NTD36-HD since they released the new firmware (http://www.synology.com/enu/support/download.php) for the DS-160e version 2.0.1-3.0426. Ethernet connections work as expected and shared folders with GUEST permissions now work! Just press REFRESH once more if you don't immediately see the file server (its HDD must be put out of sleep, so a list REFRESH on the IAMM is necessary some times).
I did contact Synology about this, and they told me that the new firmware has improved AFP connection. Indeed, the IAMM does not have a network device name (it's hidden in Network Neighborhood) and previously the Synology did not allow the IAMM to login properly... even as GUEST.
2. I am losing faith in Novatron. They never replied to any of my e-mails. What I liked about DViCO (the TViX products) is that they did reply, even in broken english. Keep pushing the Novatron guys, perhaps they will understand they need to improve their darn customer service.
3. Hey, antivirus good work with the firmware. Although I struggled a little with your english (LOL!) we thank you for your work.
(a) So you actually could OPEN the binary firmware? Could you detect the location of the bitmap fonts for the subtitles? Does that mean we can introduce GREEK (non-latin) bitmaps for the subtitles, too, like in the MTK-chip-based DVD players? (see MTZ firmware site (http://mtz.softpedia.com/) to see what I mean)
(b) how sure can we be that your firmware is properly re-packed after your changes? I do not doubt your skills or your firmware, by any chance, just a security question. Because if by any change my IAMM dies, I am screwed :o There's no-one to fix it here, in Greece!
Well done.

Hi,
I recently purchased one of your players and detected that the player
uses software licensed under the GPL. According to it you have to obtain
with all sources of the GPL software used by you (unimportant if you
have modified it or not, if its GPL please give me the source). I can
provide you with more informations of the GPL if you wish so. If you are
new with this topic: http://gpl-violations.org/faq/vendor-faq.html may
be interisting for you.
Thanks in advance

Antivirus, hello again!
I am not a linux programmer, and I try to understand your hacking steps, so bear with me.
Thank you for the trouble you're getting into. But for the sake of not scaring people, and to use your firmware, let's do it step-by-step and document the changes, because writing the programming steps can be confusing. So:
1. you opened/decrypted the OFFICIAL firmware v1.1.142 with CLinux tools. Correct?
2. you modified the code in order to clear the playlist and jukebox list, correct? Please state what file you've patched/copied/edited/deleted and what line.
3. you added TelnetD service, by modifying the code and you start this service. What file was modified, line number? Also, you added hard-coded username and password, correct?
4. How did you upgrade your player? Via the standard upgrade process, i.e. on the SETUP menu of the player? You mention tFTP, you mean TelnetFTP process?
5. You say "Set JUKEBOX.list and MYVIDEO.list to prevent lookups... not very nice,
but hey the box starts". What do you mean "not very nice", you mean the code that Novatron did or the method YOU are using?
Thanks again, let's do a comprehensive plan to fix few bugs at a time.
Shame I don't know CLinux to help you ;-)

Antivirus, you are one crazy German alright ;) (maybe Austrian?)
OK, please one-by-one because I am lost again.
Please, don't post so big lines of code, better attach a file in your post.
1. Which firmware did you open/decrypt? I read in /etc/firmware_version that's 1.1.141 and not 1.1.142 that is published on the NOVATRON site. Please confirm.
2. You have a file called anti.zip available in your website. You contain both the original and fixed firmware code? Hmm... on second thought, no, just the opened binaries, not the original code.
3. Let's make a deal--you document which changes you make (file name, code change if small) or put comments in the change // or # and I will try to work for you!
I have noticed that the background images, although "stolen" from MacOS X, they appear 'broken' when displayed at 720p (jagged edges). If I give you the same images but in better resolution, do you think they will work natively? Check this zip file: I changed the backgrounds from blue to green (to denote patched firmware) and resized them to 1280x720 pixels. A final BG can be discussed... this is just for testing.
Subtitle bitmaps--that's another crazy story. How are we going to produce bitmap fonts compatible for this ucLinux firmware? What tools do you have to convert TTF to bitmaps?
You're unlucky since I am not too busy at the office, today!!!
Thanks
Konsti
antivirus 01-15-07, 10:36 AM here you see my first firmware for iamm ( 141) 142 is coming in short time :-)
this have now telnet axxess and no playlist bug...
all what you need for iamm flash you see here :-)
with my patched firmware for telnet access ( all in english and german)

tomorrow i am back :-)
Hi Antivirus,
Nice work :)
Like Konsti, I'm not a linux programmer either but I played a little with the firmware, managing to decompress it and get it mounted in a version of Linux running on my XP box allowing me to at least view it.
I also opened up the rompkg & the curacoa executables in a disassembler with the following:
ARM (little endian)
Load Offset: 0x00
File offset: 0x40
With the above settings the text offsets appear to be in the correct positions.
i.e. in the rompkg executable:
000007F4 84 6E 09 00 off_7F4 DCD aFlash_write ; "flash_write"
000007F8 90 6E 09 00 off_7F8 DCD aFlash_update ; "flash_update"
000007FC A0 6E 09 00 off_7FC DCD aIwconfig ; "iwconfig"
I'm not sure if there would be anything useful that could be modified in either of these programs that would be of any use though!
...later,
phew.
Antivirus, Phew, you seem to know more than I do, for sure!
I know about programming but not under the Linux environment.
I would like just to keep notes of stuff changed, and make sure the code is minimally changed. Again, personally, I cannot afford to lose my box due to bad "flashing" or firmware, I just bought the thing via eBay and the guy won't support me, I know that....
Can we start by having a nice, even small text of how to upload the firmware via tFTP? Perhaps in the change log, in the beginning, a small paragraph.
I can provide you with more graphical use than programming; if there's anything I can do, let me know, as long as my office work allows it ;)
Wait a minute--I have the official firmware. There's no telnet or FTP open and running, is there? So how to upload and flash the IAMM with official firmware to the patched firmware? Did I miss something?
Also, antivirus, you crazy programmer, please when you open v1.1.142, please check whether your changes have already been implemented...
And if you know of a tool to convert TTF (e.g. Arial or Tahoma) to bitmap fonts to be used in this ucLinux thingie, let me know....
Danke schoen!

Antivirus,
Given size restrictions of 8meg to hold the OS; would it be possible to use a memory stick inserted into one of the USB sockets that would hold a modified version of the OS?
So that:
When you boot the unit inbuilt OS partly loads
It then tests for an OS on the USB memory stick
If it finds one
...it boots from the memory stick
if it does not find one
...it does a normal boot from the inbuilt OS.
I seem to remember that the guys that altered the Linksys NSLU2 done something similar.
...later,
phew.
krinderb 01-16-07, 01:12 PM Good idea phew but you on a usb stick why not simply have a folder on the root of the internal drive?
My guess is that although the USB stick is a better place to write a 'test' firmware, and I prefer it, it may be difficult to implement. Perhaps as krinderb says, it's easier to have a subfolder on the HDD1 since it's already been used for booting up...
We will then need to just have a folder like \firmare\ to place updates and tested code.
I don't know at what point of the booting process the USB host is being detected and scanned for devices...
antivirus 01-18-07, 05:30 AM boot from usb stick is a funny idea. and simply..
but first i do gftp in ..then samba. then usb boot...
my prio list is long :-)

krinderb 01-18-07, 06:16 AM great work antivirus, what kind of speeds can we expect from ftp and samba
USB stick boot has been a standard feature for the excellent german satellite receiver Dreambox for some time now... I was quite impressed that they would allow booting from USB instead of the internal flash!
antivirus: I suggest you start working from scratch on the v1.1.142 which is the latest, it will be a shame to work twice since you seem to know what you're doing ;)
I suggest you do tFTP with "root" as both username and password... don't leave the password blank...
Did you check out the background images I posted here? Would you like me to get new ones for the patched firmware?
Regards, Konsti
antivirus 01-18-07, 06:27 AM you can change password in telnet then with "passwd" :-) if all IN !NOT in 141 patched firmware, running at the moment on my alpha firmware :-)

OK... gFTP is what? Secure FTP? Telnet FTP? I am lost ;)
With that I can connect from any computer (Mac/Windoze) to the IAMM?
Remember: Anything you change on the code, please be very careful !!!
Thanks!

antivirus 01-18-07, 07:15 AM if image on usb stick or on hd then you can let run this :-)

(a) don't get me wrong; I appreciate ALL that is done and said, here! Especially for antivirus...
(b) it's a shame that the new "L" generation of Sigmas don't support H.264. It's so close to the cpu power needed for WMV. I wonder if this can be a reality, one day ;)
(c) antivirus, let us know when you've got something final final final to test!
Thanks for everything,
Konsti
antivirus 01-18-07, 04:04 PM new 142 patched firmware with built in telnet is avaible...

I had to alter the root password in the 'shadow' file to a known crypted pw to allow me access as root under Telnet.
You can get access if you use 'default' as the login name; it throws up an error about being unable to set directory, but lets you in anyway -and it's probably safer not being root-.
phil42a 01-21-07, 05:32 AM Hi to you all,
I am impressed, Antivirus actually did a great job  . But since I am not either actually an expert in Linux nor in Networks, I do understand the basics of what he did (thank you Konsti for re-stating Antivirus hacking tips...)
Just a few questions left (excuse me if I appear to be a neophyt...):
What are the actual benefits of replacing NDAS by TFTP ? (Higher transmit rate ? TFTP is described as a very light and simple protocol on Wikipedia therefore perhaps much easier to implement as a software solution).
One other key point for me, what is the impact of the patch on the Wireless functionality ?
and finally (same concern as others might have ...) Is the GUI modified somehow and is it still possible to roll back to a previous firmware just in case
>replacing NDAS by TFTP ?
TFTP is not a replacement for NDAS, it is just a means of transferring a newer rom image over to and installing onto the NTD36HD.
Currently the only modifications made on the FW by Antivirus are those he listed in one of his .docs:
<Quote>
cat /dev/null > /tmp/config/playlists/shortcut/JUKEBOX.list
cat /dev/null > /tmp/config/playlists/shortcut/MYVIDEO.list
/usr/sbin/telnetd &
</Quote>
Solving a problem with crashes -seemingly because one of these .list files grew large enough to disrupt the normal operation of the unit-, and opening up the possibility of using telnet to get 'into' the unit...this is of little use to the normal user however.
More interesting to the user will be the implementation of Samba and Ftp which Antivirus is trying to get running on the unit. Wheter the actual file transfer speed improves by using either of those over NDAS remains to be seen.

phil42a 01-21-07, 02:43 PM Thank you Phew for this quick explanation. Basically just a way to download new unofficial (but improved) firmwares by bypassing the normal novatron update scheme.
Guys, there's a hurricane going on here--I can't cope with the speed stuff is released! Antivirus, let us know as a TOTAL what your firmware now supports...
Can you please keep track of the changes/additions? That will save all some time reading this thread back...!
Thanks to all for your support and comments.
I managed to get 'pure-ftpd' working on the NTD36HD, allowing me to ftp to/from the unit but cannot get my ext3 drive to be recognized on the NTD36HD :( ...maybe Antivirus has had better luck.
Built a version of the FW that autoloads telnetd and installed.
Formatted a 120Gig drive to ext3 in linux and replaced the drive I have installed.
Made the folders MOVIE, PHOTO and MUSIC on the ext3 drive.
Booted the NTD36HD with new FW, new 120g HDD and a memory stick with some test files on it.
...There was no HDD1 showing on the GUI :(
telnet'd into the unit and checked what had been mounted
cubee:~# mount
/dev/root on / type romfs (ro)
none on /dev type devfs (rw)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
ramfs on /tmp type ramfs (rw)
usbfs on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw)
/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 on /tmp/usb/disc0/lun0/part1 type vfat (ro,nosuid)
...the /dev/scsi.... is my memory stick.
so, the new 120g ext3 drive did not load automatically.
I forced it to mount to the same location as the ntfs drive loaded with
<this is the normal with an ntfs HDD>
/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 on /tmp/ide/part1 type ntfs (ro,noatime,n
odiratime,nosuid,uid=0,gid=0,fmask=0177,dmask=077,nls=utf8,e rrors=continue,mft_z
one_multiplier=1)
<this is the normal with an ntfs HDD>
I mounted with:
cubee:~# mount /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 /tmp/ide/part1
...this mounted OK as an ext3 drive (rw) and I could browse the folders in /tmp/ide/part1
Unfortunatly the GUI still could not see the HDD1, I assume that the 'caracoa' executable tries to load an 'ntfs' drive at startup and if it does not find one flags it as not being there? (maybe needs a slight hex edit to the executable here)
ANYWAY:
The purpose was to test pure-ftpd (I just assumed that the ext3 drive would work as a replacement so we can deal with that later).
From my memory-stick I copied a version of 'pure-ftpd' (borrowed from the MG 35 thread) into the /tmp/ folder:
cp tmp/usb/disc0/lun0/part1/pure-ftpd /tmp/pure-ftpd
and ran the program from the /tmp/ide/part1 folder
/tmp/pure-ftpd -H -D -M -z &
I could then use a WinXP ftp program to connect as 'anonymous' and see the folders MOVIE, PHOTO and MUSIC on the ext3 drive. Copying to/from these from my desktop (not super-fast but worked)
Anyone with some linux knowledge with any thoughts?
How are you getting on Antivirus?
krinderb 01-25-07, 02:17 AM phew,
your right about flag for the 'ntfs' drive at startup:
"I assume that the 'caracoa' executable tries to load an 'ntfs' drive at startup and if it does not find one flags it as not being there"
I have a irrating bug with my IAAM, where my 500gb drive is not always picked up, and i have to restart the IAAM and ony then is the drive picked up.
Can this irratating BUG be fixed or will i have to live with it?
K
Phew, Antivirus, thanks for your great work!
I know you're still experimenting, maybe you can tell me if I can offer some ideas on new menus, higher in resolution, like 1280x720 or other.... Did you try the JPG's I posted? How did they display in terms of quality? Smooth or jagged edges?
Phew, why do you need to mount an ext3 drive? I am not supporting the NTFS but just asking... is it to be able to write files when you FTP from another computer?
Hmmm... I guess so ;)
clasami 01-26-07, 04:37 PM phew, good to see that antivirus is not the only one to work on the IAMM. It is a good piece of hardware but the software badly needs to be improved.
Thanks to you and antivirus for your work and effort,
Michael
antivirus 01-26-07, 05:14 PM i am little ill, but after sunday good work come :-) ask phew :-)
we work on good things
regards
clasami 01-28-07, 11:20 AM Phew, glad to see that antivirus now has some support. It is a shame that the manufacturer appear to be either incapable or unwilling to support their own product. So the work you and antivirus spend on the device is all the more welcome and appreciated.
Regards,
Michael
promethian1 01-28-07, 01:06 PM I,m also a reasonably new owner of an IAMM. Would love to be to gain control over this thing too, if I could be of any help... unfortunately my Linux sucks.. :(
Would love to be able to transfer files from my main PC which run XP64 on home network. NDAS doesn't support X64 :(.
PS the 1080i output from this thing is superb on my TECO 40 inch :)..
Am an ex Kiss DP558 user.
Greetings to all !
I am happy to see that the thread I started is gathering more and more fans!
Phew, Antivirus, good to know you're working together.
I will be preparing some background images for you and will send them to you for inclusion in your new firmware.
Good luck in your experimentation with the code!
Guys... anyone... no news... what's up? Phew! Antivirus! How are you guys doing with the experiments?!?
antivirus 02-02-07, 04:17 PM we work on it :-)
regards
promethian1 02-07-07, 02:14 PM Its gone quiet.....?
The guys are still experimenting. That's what I am told.... Let's be patient, the baby is not far from being born ;)
LordByron 02-08-07, 05:47 AM I bought this media player and I'm using it with great satisfaction, I love the possibility to play files directly from my PC using the wireless connection.
I have some problems with my external HDD (it's a Packard Bell 2.5" without external power supply) : it's recognized and I'm able to browse the files stored in but if I try to play them the Iamm remains in loading status and it freezes. I contacted Novatron and they suggested to format the HDD in NTFS but I have to try yet. I hope it will work :)
Good luck! I don't see why FAT32 should not be working (you don't mention it but I assume it's FAT32 for what size? 80GB?) perhaps NTFS read-only that the IAMM supports has better results. What did you try to play? ISO file? VOBs and Video_TS? .avi?
Let us know...
LordByron 02-08-07, 07:52 AM It's a 120GB in FAT32, Novatron support wrote me that it's better using NTFS for HDDs greater than 32GB... I tried divx, xvid, dvd iso and mp3. The same files are ok using internal HDD or Network.
This is the email Novatron support sent me :
Dear Sir
Thanks for your e-mail.
Could you check the below things with your external HDD.
* If your HDD is over 32GB, we recommend NTFS file system.
Please check the HDD is formatted NTFS.
* To be used with NTD36HD, the HDD should be a primary partition.
Please check the HDD has a primary partition.
* Please check the file that can be played with NTD36HD.
After checking this, please let me know if you still have some problems.
Best regards,
NOVATRON CO., LTD.
FAT32 only supports single files up to 2GB, so the full DVD ISO is not supported--you can't write it on the HDD itself! The VIDEO_TS folder is still OK since each VOB is 1GB.
Try NTFS and let us know. I have formatted my drive (internal) with NTFS. Does your external appear as HDD2 or you select the USB icon?
LordByron 02-08-07, 10:02 AM Internal drive is formatted with NTFS so no problems, the external HDD appears as USB. ASAP I'll be able to move files on my external HDD I will try to format it with NTFS... cross the fingers :)
LordByron 02-08-07, 02:47 PM I have formatted my external HDD with NTFS and now it works fine :) Now I'm trying NDAS but it's slow, a copy function from external USB devices to internal HDD would be great in a next firmware release.
NDAS is software-based and IS SLOW by default. But for a media player, I don't think why the manufacturer would put a copy function (from volume to volume) since it's not really in the framework of a media player's operation (although handy, I agree with you).
PLUS! You're forgetting that NTFS capability seems "read-only", except for the NDAS module (which is not Novatron's software). I don't know if the internal linux-based system loads a driver for WRITE capability on NTFS...
Phew, Antivirus, you've analysed the firmware--is there a full "read-write" driver you can load in the IAMM when mounting the HDD (internal or external)?
antivirus 02-09-07, 05:27 AM i think end of this month i have a gftp ready ...in iamm and all other players :-)
speed is very nice , better as NDAS !!!
regards
Well done, guys. Just make sure you let us know in detailed steps what to do ;-)
Should I prepare the two menu backgrounds for you? What size do you want them? The green ones were just a test, I have this same background from my iMac (MacOS X) in a great resolution!
promethian1 02-09-07, 02:36 PM Has anyone used a DVD as an external device on the IAMM?
If so whats the quality, does it upgrade the image and which ext DVD player is recommended?

LordByron 02-13-07, 04:03 AM I found another iusse: my Iamm NTD36HD seems not able to play packet beatstream files by wireless network connection (I have to use MPEG4 Modifier to unpack them) while using internal HD or external USB devices it plays them without problems
Can you give an example of "packet beatstream files"? What do you mean? Is it the way the video/audio is interleaved on an AVI file?
LordByron 02-13-07, 09:51 AM It's an option of the Xvid codec : http://www.gromkov.com/faq/conversion/xvid_options.html
LordByron, especially for the media players, I never go beyond the basic settings of the XviD compressor, just because I want to remain compliant with all devices (except bitrate, quality, forced I-frame setting etc.)
In the past, some players like my old TViX M-3000U did not play quarter-pixel encoded files, I've learned not to tamper too much with stuff that I wish to give to friends and to play on non-computer systems....
antivirus 02-14-07, 04:06 AM here the new 1.50 firmware for iamm as pkg file
http://amd.co.at/anti/hd-player/ilam_ntg36hd/Orginal_firmware/romfs-novatron-iamm35-1-1-1-1-150.zip
and changelog
=================================================
Firmware version 1.1.150 Date : FEB. 14, 2007
=================================================
1. M3U and PLS bugs modification
2. Jukebox list can be stored upto 200 files.
3. Support SAA subtitles.

antivirus, thank you for your work!
2. You mean: Jukebox list can contain up to media 200 files, right?
3. I do not know SAA format, but SSA format for subtitles (SubStation Alpha) is it SSA?
4. You mean that in an AVI file there is only ONE audio track, but it contains one language on LEFT channel and a second language on RIGHT channel, like television, correct?
5. Did you keep the same image? Did you include a larger resolution image?
THANKS AGAIN!
antivirus 02-14-07, 05:04 AM i give only some hints and things to novatron.
this is offizial update from novatron WITHOUT telnet access ( but with much things from me inside :-)

Wait a minute! I just checked the Novatron firmware page!
You actually created the official firmware? That's good news, well done!
Still, was I correct in what I wrote before? SSA subs? 2-language dual-mono audio track? 200 selections in the Jukebox list?
What did you use as background? I hope you haven't used the same JPEG file in Photoshop and saved it back--the compression would be twice as bad!
enderffx 02-14-07, 07:29 AM You actually created the official firmware?!
I don't think so, or did i get that wrong :-)
Nevertheless, THANKS, i am bidding for one on ebay now as it seems to have a livespan longer than the manufacturer if we can patch the firmware by ourselves...
Greetings,
Nils
I purchased my IAMM NTD36-HD on eBay.de too, but using the BUY NOW feature. The seller has a website, it's www.all4living.com and his service was really good!
German customers can buy this from www.hdd-player.de who may not ship outside Germany--I was in talks with this guy for many days until I realised he doesn't want to sell.
But hey, enderffx, did you just joined this thread or are you someone we know already :p
Antivirus, Phew, can I possibly post or send you some corrections on the text that is displayed on the IAMM menus? I have detected minor spelling errors. Do you have access to the strings resources?
antivirus 02-14-07, 08:52 AM mail me all what you found mistakes in iamm :-)

Hi-Jack 02-14-07, 01:33 PM Ok, if the secret on how to unpack is still secret... after this post it will no longer
be so and everyone can start developing on the scene... (I believe the scene
should share knowledge)
- get pspad free hex editor
- Open the PKG file with it
- Search for 1F8B and select everything "before" it and remove
- Save the file as a GZ (firmware.gz)
- Open with Winrar or something
Now boot in lInux, mount the ISO file and happy editing.
To Phew and Antivirus... Great job guys. Always love to see ommunity development.
Enjoy
Hi-Jack
kyser143 02-14-07, 04:17 PM Hi guys just bought one of these from someone on ebay got me hard drive in ...took some time getting network and NAS sorting but watching a film right now and very please with it need to try som HD files later... only thing was the optical connection to close to the DVI i seem to struggle getting the optical cable in ..very nice player ..Hi-Jack got this after reading all your reviews ...just use it for video...nice player.
A question instead of disconnecting all TV cable can I hook it up to my laptop via usb at the same time or even its hassle disconnecting all to hook up to laptop?

Keeping up to date on this... but unfortunately am a linux dummy :-(
This new firmware... can I FTP with it?
I cant use NDAS cos I'm on XP64 aand NDAS doesnt support it :-(
Any help would be grateful
A question instead of disconnecting all TV cable can I hook it up to my laptop via usb at the same time or even its hassle disconnecting all to hook up to laptop?
Sorry, mate, you can't connect to USB and in parallel have the player in Player mode. Once you plug the USB cable on any computer, the IAMM turns to an external drive. The same holds for network cable, never have both Ethernet and USB connected... (that's what Novatron suggests and I intend to listen to them) :)
I cant use NDAS cos I'm on XP64 aand NDAS doesnt support it :-(
UPDATE! You can use NDAS now, just go on the Ximeta (http://www.ximeta.com/web/support/download/windows_xp/drivers/v3x/index.php) pages and download the (beta, still) driver for XP64 here (http://www.ximeta.com/web/support/download/windows_vista/drivers/v3x/ximeta_ndas_3.20.1519_us_x64.zip) :)
Antivirus, Phew: the fonts used on the menus and subtitles, are they classic Linux-based fonts? Bitmaps, of course, but are they easy to locate and detect?
I have uploaded the official firmware 150 last night and could not see the menu background changes... Unless they used a higher resolution JPG, who knows what they did?
Regarding the text/string mistakes, I am already writing them and send them soon... I was laughing my eyes of to some text, the way it was syntaxed... Ah, those Koreans :p
promethian1 02-15-07, 11:50 AM Thanx Konsti :) Last time I looked it wasn't there.

yeah, it is romfs and I think there we are back to nearly the same procedure as of the beginning of hi-jacks forum, when the first kiss dp450 etc. got modified.
Mount the romfs as loop (mount - o loop....) change anything you want to change and use genromfs for repacking the babe. Maybe calculate a new MD5 and there you are...

dixonhk 02-18-07, 07:31 AM Dear all,
I just bought my NTD36HD a few days ago. After firmware update to 1.1.150, I cannot display subtitle properly for Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese for SRT & SUB file. Even I upgrade to Antivirus patched version 1.1.142, I still cannot get the subtitle work correctly. It just display some garbage on my screen. Can anyone help me or give me some hints? I really appreciate if someone can help me.
I can display Traditional Chinese correctly before.
Best wishes,

kyser143 02-18-07, 09:11 AM I been playing with my Iamm for a week now and its grown on me..at first without a Internal Hdd i found it kept locking and needing a reboot. Still does that but not as much just when it doesnt like a file I ask it to play. I found it has a problem with some ISO files I download. I tried a DVD9 and it wouldnt play but when I stripped it played the TS file. One thing currently annoying me and if anyone knows the answer I would be grateful. Can you change the aspect from 4:3 to 16:9 or vice versa via the remote without stopping the film going to setup and selecting the option etc. Would make my life easier. Also i have a panny PX60 HD ready if I select DVI Auto would it just play at the best ratio. When I select a specific option eg 720p etc it seems to shift the screen to the right by an inch??
Hi
I'm looking for a good portable multimedia device that give me the possibility to copy/move/share video/audio files through the ethernet-network among the PC, a NAS (Synology 101g+) and the internal HD of the IAMM itself.
I've seen that the IAMM NTD36HD seems to have some problems with the LAN (wired and/or wireless), if I'm not wrong.
Another function that could be very useful for a picture-storage when you have not a PC available (e.g if you are on a trip), is the OTG-function: the possibility to copy/move picture-files automatically and without the PC from a USBkey (or SD card reader) -connected to the USB port of the IAMM- to the internal HD of the IAMM. I don't think that this function is supported from the IAMM
Thank you for your help and suggestions :)
Best regards
Francesco

Hey Dickson, happy new Chinese year! I think it's best you contact Novatron, to see if they did any changes to the code. Another solution could be that you save the .srt and .sub files as UNICODE format (Notepad on Windows). I think it's unicode already, just to make sure. Maybe, like on other players, non-latin based languages like Chinese and Greek, you need the subtitle file in unicode format... plain text.

When it comes to switching resolutions (via DVI) or component signals, I think the problem may also lie on the television/projector and in the way they handle the signals. Remember, digital tv or projectors have a panel, and they try to adapt the incoming signal to this panel, either it is 800x600, 848x480, 1362x768 etc. So check if a DVD player with the same type of connection also exhibits this problem when switching resolutions.
As to your 4:3 to 16:9, this shouldn't be necessary, if the code was well written. What I mean is that, despite the fact that i set the IAMM on 16:9, meaning I should get the 4:3 AVIs with black bars on the sides, I get them (horizontally) streched most of the times. I go to the SETUP menu, and set it again to 16:9 and it works until I play a file of different aspect ratio.
But for DVDs, if you play e.g. the interviews (which are not always 16:9) the player should have detected this and add black bars to the side...
Am I asking too much for a well-written and somewhat intelligent code?

Hi Konsti,
Happy Chinese new year! I replaced my box and now can play chinese without changing any in my video file. I am curious that it is 1.1.142 but it looks different from the official firmware since it can play chinese. If the firmware is just simply a OS, it should be ready to play chinese.
However, I cannot play any idx and sub file. Any special instruction? I can play srt file without any problem. I also use the same name with different extension only.
Best wishes,
Dickson
Dickson,
I think you may have updated your Iamm with the wrong (e.g. European) firmware... Are you sure you used the correct software? You actually went to a store and replaced your Iamm? Wow.
In any case, I cannot play .idx subtitles, either. I think I never tried .sub and I can confirm I can play .srt.
Antivirus, Phew, any comments on the .idx and .sub compatibility? Can you check inside the firmware if there can be such support?

Hi Konsti,
I replaced the box in the store.
I cannot find any Asian firmware in the website in iamm . co. kr or hdd-player. de which mention in the manual.
For sub / idx, i see it is supported in the manual but I can never successfully play a sub file too. It is strange if it mention in the manual but it not work.

Dickson, before you update to a new version, I suggest you consult Novatron and let us know. I am living in Greece so this does not affect me, just the Chinese users only. Perhaps there is a specially-compiled version for Chinese.
Guys, did anyone else play .sub or .idx files? Please post your experience or solution! Thanks.

PatrickHung 02-26-07, 09:23 PM Hi Guys, Chinese version 1.1.150 was posted last night. at iamm.co.kr.....
I tried, it works fine.
So it's official. To all Chinese IAMM owners: Please do not download and install *any* firmware located in this thread, since it's the European firmware. Instead, get the updated Chinese version from the official site, located here (http://www.iamm.co.kr/eng/custom/down2/view.php?idx=33&search_part=&value=&page=1&cg=&pgb=firm&pgubun=ntd36). Thank you.

Hi Patrick,

1.1.150 can play sub type subtitle file too? I will try it tonight.
Hi Konsti,
Thanks to post the link too.

dixonhk 02-27-07, 09:41 AM Hi all,
I still failed to open those sub subtitled film. Anyone can help?
Best wishes,

PatrickHung 02-27-07, 11:14 PM Hi Dickson, yes I'm from HK. and I bought the toy from DVClub as well. As a matter of fact, I got the same issue as you. I got the fix after I emailed directly to a Novatron (Korean) guy. That's why the Chinese version was posted on Monday night.
Version 1.1.150 Chinese version can resolve (for sure) the issue of chinese character display in the directory/menu. Regarding the subtitle file, the manual says 36HD can only support SMI/SUB/SRT (no idx) format of subititle files but the file name must be the same as the video file. Have you checked this?
I don't have .sub file to play or test, I would be happy to help if you can send me the sub file and I can test for you.

Hi Patrick,
Thanks for your reply. I have upgraded to 1.1.I50 but still failed. I can show you as below as an example.
[12.21.06.xxxx.2006.DVDRip.XviD-ESPiSE]
- xxxx.2006.DVDRip.XviD-ESPiSE.avi
- xxxx.2006.DVDRip.XviD-ESPiSE.idx
- xxxx.2006.DVDRip.XviD-ESPiSE.sub
I still failed to play the subtitle if my directory structure is as above. Also, I want to clarify that SUB subtitled film must include idx right? or there are two formats of SUB files?
Best wishes,
Dickson
Guys, there seems to be a confusion, here. PatrickHung was right: the IAMM can play SMI/SUB/SRT files (named after the .avi) but these must be in PLAIN TEXT format (ASCII or Unicode).
Dickson, you try to play SUB/IDX files, which work totally different. This specific SUB file is not text, it's a binary file that is extracted from the subtitles stream on the DVD. Try to open it with Notepad, you will see. The IDX file (index) tells the player where to go and extract from the SUB (subtitle stream) file the bitmap subtitle for a specific timecode/frame. I could play these with MediaPlayer Classic (Windows) found on sourceforge (http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/). So no binary SUB/IDX file support...

* idx/sub is very very different from SUB or SRT or TXT, idx/sub is not plain text, and the .sub by itself is just text and you have to be able to open it with any text editor and be able to see text, with time stamp and duration of every line. I did a quick research, because "I am working :)" and got a tool for you
This is a little description of what you need
http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?p=1306657&sid=da1120c3fcc5650bbc66305d1fa918f5#1306657
And you can download it from here
http://developer.berlios.de/project/showfiles.php?group_id=1402
basically your idx/sub is called "vobsub" subtitles
if you could have later any issue with sync, please use my favorite tool for this matter, its name is Subtitle WorkShop it is free and it is great and easy to use
http://www.urusoft.net/products.php?cat=sw
here you can add seconds and remove, move timeframe for every line or just re-sync with an input movie file, it is very easy, you will see. . . .
Devan78 02-28-07, 10:32 AM Hi all...
I've just picked up a NTD36HD and I'm having some trouble with it.
It's connecting to my wireless AP, and I can ping it from my Windows XP desktop... the problem is that on trying to initialize it as an NDAS device, the software keeps telling me that it is offline.... This effectivly means that the only way I can transfer files to it is via the USB cable (where it behaves like an good little external HD).
Any ideas?
Many thanks,
Devan
Hello Devan78,
Try to see if it works with an ethernet cable. I had the same problem with you, but not on Wireless, on Ethernet. You know what? The device key was not the correct one for the MAC address of the IAMM!
If the NDAS does not work with your ethernet connection, then it's likely that the device ID you were given is wrong, request a new one from your retailer.
Where did you buy this from?
promethian1 02-28-07, 05:10 PM What happened to the modified firmware that was being worked on?

Thanks Konsti. I bought it from small vendor in Wan Chai computer market (I live in Hong Kong). I'm not so sure it's a NDAS Key issue... the key I have inputs fine, and if I change one of the characters I get a message saying something to the effect of "incorrect key"... I'll give it a few more tries tonight when I get home, if I don't get any joy I'll take it back.
Thanks
PatrickHung 02-28-07, 08:41 PM Hi Dickson, There are two types of .SUB subtitle file format:
1. only .SUB per .avi, this type of SUB files are text based files.
2. a pair of .SUB and .idx files which are decoded from the original VOBSub file from a DVD formatted file. This pair of subtitle files are image based files.
So, as the manual says only support .SUB, then please extract the subtitle to a text-based .SUB and test again (if possible)
have a nice day.
PatrickHung 03-01-07, 03:35 AM Hi Guys, my 36HD works fine, please be sure you did not input the wrong device key (there are 2 keys, one for wired, one for wireless). Also be sure you install the NAS software correctly. Cep does not automatically mount the 36HD, you have to manually mount it to read or read/write mode after the network connected.
Also, 36HD has its own OS to memorise the network status. If you plug and unplug the ethernet cable or the the wireless link lost because of transmission error, 36HD cannot refresh the directory content even thought you have modified it from your PC. You have to power it off and on again.
I am going to reflect this problem to iamm/novatron. I believe this is a very new product and it needs tunning of the firmware.
Regarding the NDAS problems: in my case, the key that was issued for *wired* was a valid one, but for the wrong MAC hardware address, i.e. not for my IAMM. So even if the key is entered correctly, being a valid, it does not correspond to your ethernet/wireless hardware address.
The provided keys worked on my wireless but not on my wired connection, and throught Google digging, I realised the code was wrong. I requested and obtained a new one, via my reseller (eBay and I can tell you it was quite hard....)

Konsti, thanks again....
I tried wiring it up, and the NDAS works fine, it looks like the key on the bottom of my box only works for the wired NIC's MAC. I've emailed IAMM support and asked them how I'd get the wireless key... if they can't supply it, I guess I'll have to go back to the shop I bought it from.
Thanks again!
Good morning to all. Phew, Antivirus, please give us an update on your private work... it would be nice to know and applaud your efforts!
Devan78: keep bugging Novatron. I think the guy who was labelling the Device IDs there, made a lot of mistakes. Since the IAMM plays fine, it's better to let Novatron know of their mistakes, rather than having the shop exchange it. What happens if the new IAMM has the same problem?
dixonhk 03-02-07, 01:59 PM Hi Konsti, Patrick,
Thanks a lot for you guys explanation. I just know SUB is different from SUB/IDX now. Sorry for off topic questions as I am not quite familiar about SUB. Any recommended way to convert SUB/IDX to SRT with good OCR of chinese character? I try some software but not look need a lot of effort to correct the OCR.
Best wishes,
Dickson

Finally got it, works fine (if a little sluggish) over the wireless now.
Here's a quick step-by-step on how to get at the firmware. I didn't actually have a Linux computer with me at the time, so I booted up an Ubuntu live CD (free to download from Ubuntu's site) and used two memory sticks as I'd saved the file to one using a Windows machine but it can only be copied across accurately to a Linux (ext2) file system for sake of preserving symlinks and the like when editing.
1) download the latest version from with iamm/novatronic website
2) unzip it (should leave you a directory with a .pkg file in it.)
3) open the file up using a hex editor and remove everything (mostly padding 00's) before the first occurrence of the string "1F8B" and the save the edited fire as FOO.gz
4) extract FOO.gz and you'll be left with a .bin file. This is the read-only ROMFS image file.
5) issue the following "mkdir /tmp/romfs" to give the soon to be mounted image a place to live.
6) issue the following: "sudo mount -o loop rompkg_pack_tmp.bin /tmp/romfs/". This mounts the filesystem (read only) at /tmp/romfs.
7) issue the following: "cp -a -r /tmp/romfs/ /tmp/editablefs". This copies all the files and structure of the read-only ROMFS image and puts them in read-write directory called "/tmp/editablefs"... congratulations you can now change things to your heart's content.
I'll do a post on how to put it all back together for uploading when I've got the time to play with it a little more. Standard disclaimers apply, I'm not a Linux-person so don't take anything I say as law, and most importantly, don't blame me if you break anything :)

themarques 03-11-07, 09:47 AM Just a quick question I am having serious issues with my NTD it always locks up lately especially when connected to my Optoma HD70 projector. It never really did that with my Samsung TV. So my question is do you think it will be safe to just lleave the NTD on cause everytime I turn it off I have to play around with it etc and its really annoying. I have updated the firmware and its still the same thing.
Or is it that I have a defective unit?
Hello themarques, my opinion is that you should seek a firmware update for your Optoma, too. I have not connected the IAMM to any projector, only via component RCAs to my TV. Why don't you try the same?
In the past, I remember hearing problems about devices that can't properly talk to each other via DVI or HDMI. So make sure your Optoma has the latest firmware... Which resolution is locking up? 1080i/p? This is something new as support to latest devices, so I would (unfortunately) expect to encounter problems...
Anyone else with a projector and the IAMM via DVI or component?
And a final note: don't leave the IAMM running for a long period of time. I don't trust the cooling mechanism of the design. The small fan at the rear does not do a great job cooling it. I had it running for 2 days and it started producing errors on the filesystem (via NDAS connection). A hot HDD for a long period of time is not good for its lifespan.
Devan78 03-17-07, 04:01 AM I have a strange problem. Certain MP3 files when played simply forward the "selector" all the way to the end of the folder... (not jumping to the last file, simply scrolling through all the files in the diretory until the last one is reached). I've removed, re-added these mp3s, but it still presents the same problem...
I've also noticed that playing mp3s through the unit into my TV (and out through my DV/surround system) introduces a lot of distortion, making it sound like the speakers are having trouble handling it (even on extrememly low volume)... I don't have the same problem playing video files though, strange.
Anybody else seen either of these symptoms?

Fab7000 03-18-07, 01:49 PM Hi guys, great forum.
I'm another new owner of a IAMM player, and I am following your discussion regarding unoficcial patched firmware versions.
Any chance of a patched firmware update that is possible to install without any linux knowledge - but maybe packaged for all us dull xp users?
If that is possible, I would love to host and manage a page dedicated to this development (of course in deep collaboration with AVforum :) ).
Best regards,
Fab
Hello Fab7000 and welcome. We will keep you posted of any changes, so far the two people dealing with the firmware are Antivirus and Phew, but their hands seem tied down lately.
Devan78, let us know more details about your MP3 files. The fact that the file selector 'slides' to the bottom means that the IAMM does not recognise the files as audio encoded with MP3. Play them on your computer with Media Player Classic, and find out (Shift+F10) more about the details, encoding, bitrate etc. I think they must not really be proper MP3 files.
The IAMM is supposedly able to play both constant and variable bitrates, so the fact that it doesn't *like* some MP3 files, means clearly that they don't even comply to the standard.
Do not be fooled by the fact that some files are playable on the PC but not on other machines. The computer software is very forgiving to some errors, but consumer products may be not. So non-compliant files, or discs etc. may play on the PC but not on other devices.
Regarding the problem with the audio: I think I found what it is. The programmers at Novatron may need to lower the output of the audio converter. DON'T PUT THE VOLUME LEVEL TO THE MAXIMUM, via the remote of the IAMM. Keep it two 'clicks' below the maximum, you will notice a significant improvement on the clarity of the sound. I think the firmware distorts the sound due to high amplification on the device...
Konsti,
A few posts ago you were refering to the fonts within the FW.
There are two font file within the FW one 16 bit wide and the other 24 bit wide.
They don't appear to be of any sort of standard that I could tell, but they are just simple bitmat fonts.
Is your plan to try and re-create the fonts?
This will read in arial & output bitmap, but not the same types of file as used on the iamm...you could with a bit of hex editing get the job done though:
http://www.iseatech.com/
Dear phew, thanks for your post and PM!
I remember when tweaking the Pioneer DVD player firmware, based on the MTK chipset, I found a tool called MtkFontCreator that could generate those bitmaps. Unfortunately, the fonts you sent me (osd.8859.xxx.font) don't comply to that standard.
I also downloaded the BitMapFontCreator 1.6 from the site you mentioned, but no luck either, it's not a format supported.
It has to do with linux, this binary bitmap must be decoded in terms of format, how it is structured. Sure, a hex editor may do, like WinHex, but I must be able to read the structure and believe me, hex-editing it may take weeks...
Is there a way you can find out the binary file format? Once we find a software suitable to open and read these binaries, I can then try to generate from my Greek Windows machine the Extended ASCII characters for Greek subtitle support...
Thanks again! Any ides, anyone?
@Fab7000
I too use XP most of the time, but very occasionally venture into Linux.
If you want a copy with telnet &/or pure-ftpd them PM me.
@Konsti
Never before have I got 'into' fonts, but I see what you mean. They are rather bad; when you look closely.
Although there seems to be two sets of fonts (2 standard? and 2 big), these fonts compare exactly, so really there are only two fonts used 'standard' & 'big' .
If you have a particular character set that needs importing then let me know and I'll have a look see.
Dear Phew, thanks for your research on the fonts.
I think that the subtitle fonts that I am interested in, must be special fonts of two colours, one for the letter itself (e.g. white) and one for the contour (e.g. black). The OSD fonts are the menu and screen fonts (lists, windows etc.) and there's no real meaning in tampering with them. Perhaps only fix the bloody problem with punctuation marks, like dot [.] dash [-] brackets, parentheses etc.
What I was hoping to do, just like others for the MTK-based DVD players, is to compile/convert a truetype (Windows) font (e.g. Tahoma or Arial) to Greek ANSI bitmap and have the second half (character 132 to 255) pasted into the current font. This way, greek codepage subtitles will play flawlessly. This is what the people at http://mtz.softpedia.com/ did for many players--amazing job.
Finally, I would really wish that the <tags> from subtitle text are ignored, e.g. <i> and </i> for italics and <b> and </b> for bold, because they are currently not ignored. This will save all us time from removing them via Notepad, for example.
Those Novatron engineers don't think as customers, yet :)
Fab7000 03-26-07, 08:50 AM Hi guys,
Once again, thanks for a splendid forum.
I was wondering - I've attached an external USB disk to one of the USB slots on the IAMM. It works fine, can see all the files on my TV set. The IAMM is set up to wireless, and I use the NDAS software to share files from the internal harddisk of the IAMM. Big success ! :)
However, I would like to share the contents of the *external* USB disk I've attached to the USB slot on the IAMM, so that I can see the files on my PC. I can't figure a way of setting that up in the IAMM, so i thought maybe i could access it by using a direct path a la e:/USB1-1 or something?
Can I access an external harddisk attached to the IAMM from my PC using NDAS or whatever?
Any of you got a clue ?
By the way, I met with some Korean guys from Zoe Networks at CeBit in Hannover a week ago. They pretended they didn't know about the IAMM, although it's almost the same box as their Eureka and you could tell get got uneasy that I mentioned the similarities. If you want to contact them, I got their businesscards. Let me know.
Best regards,
Fab
clasami 03-26-07, 09:37 AM No, you can't see the USB drives on your PC. Only the internal disk of the IAMM can be accessed via NDAS.

Michael

Yes, Michael is right. The current implementation of (software) NDAS driver only supports the internal NTFS-formatted drive. There is no option, setup or selection to share the USB disk or USB DVD drive contents to the NDAS-client PC...
The best way is to actually move the external drive to your PC ;)
Fab7000 03-27-07, 03:25 PM Thanks for the quick replies, guys. I hope that others who search the web for these matters can use your replies as well.
New question: as I actually own *two* IAMMs, I am considering bridging them so to have one in the living room (A) and one in the bedroom (B).
Lets say that I've got movie content on IAMM A and want to stream it to IAMM B. I noticed I could do so by introducing my PC, where I attach the NDAS from IAMM A and then share the drive. This way I can see the drive as a shared network drive.
But it is way too slow to stream movie content, it stops for sereval seconds now and then.
I am curious about the ad hoc network, and have the following questions (forgive me if it is the wrong forum):
1. Can i set up two IAMMs in an AD HOC network and let them see each other without use of a PC or any other mediator?
2. Can I set up two IAMMs in an AD HOC network and somehow let the communicate with a PC (maybe also a member of the ad hoc network) that is at the same time connected to the Internet via a Access Pointer network ?
I hope you can helt, and I am looking forward to that point in time where I can maybe contribute to this great forum,
Cheers,
Fab
Hello Fab,
I think what you want to do, simply cannot be done with two IAMMs connected over the network. And this is because the IAMM does not start any kind of network sharing service.
So you will either need to get a small NAS server (like myself, e.g. Synology) or use this weird but working way, sharing the NDAS folder. Your PC works as a network sharing service, which is missing from the IAMM.
And this is simple to understand--you can't find the IAMM anywhere on the network, as a device (no network ID) except ping-ing its IP address. Even when I use DHCP from my WiFi router, the network name on the "connected devices" list is empty!
This is what perhaps Phew and Antivirus are working on, an FTP service to start on the IAMM so that you can read its files, but this is a *possible* firmware which is not official, and we don't know if they will ever release it.
Sorry if I don't offer some working solution.... Any thoughts, anyone?
New official firmware update for the IAMM NTD36-HD version 1.1.152!

I installed it one week ago but but I didn't notice any improvements or fixes, only the screensaver :)
As if Novatron didn't have issues to solve, they included a screen-saver... What can I say?
Antivirus, Phew, please give us your feedback or comments on this version... Thanks!
clasami 03-29-07, 02:47 PM Konsti, don't hold your breath. There has been no news lately and I honestly doubt that there will be any useful independent firmware any time soon.
Michael
I don't know what to say. Perhaps you are right, clasami. But the guys that could work on this firmware probably don't have time to spend: work, family etc. (like myself). I thought they were university students :p
Anyway, what I would really want to see as a simple fix is to be able to ignore tagged text inside a subtitle file, e.g. .srt type. The <b> </b> and <i> </i> tags are very common on downloaded SRT subtitles, and I have to manually remove them every time. I think I must write a small Visual Basic proggie to do that for me...
clasami 03-30-07, 01:31 PM Looking at the equipment that antivurs maintains, hard to believe that a student can afford that. Reading his frist posts over on hdd, everything was supposed to be so easy. But now there are no news and no reactions if you ask for an update on his work. Looks to me as if he failed but does not want to admit. Too bad.

willygroup 04-05-07, 11:19 AM Hi, I've recently buy a IAMM NTD36HD.
I've some question about it (I've read the previously message but I havent found my answers):
I'm trying to edited iamm firmware.
I've edited the file "strtable.txt" adding an new language.
Now how can I rebuild the firmware file?
Anybody has added a new menu language?
It's possible that this device read multi subtitle files?
Now read: video.avi, video.srt
I would It read: video.avi, video.01.srt, video.02.srt
Thanks
Hello willygroup, and welcome to this thread.
Since all the Korean media players don't support Greek language (for my use) but only Latin-based characters (including extended ASCII) I never bothered dealing with subtitles, especially multi-sub files. So anyone else must reply if they have played with this feature.
However, when you press the SUBTITLE button on the remote, you can select the subtitle with the UP/DOWN arrow on the remote (or OFF completely) and press OK to confirm. So do rename the .srt files with the proper language extensions and try that.
Let us know your results! Cheers.
steveo3567 04-18-07, 03:26 AM Hello everyone,
Bought my player about a month ago and have been very pleased with it generally. Have even been able to listen to internet radio by streaming it to a file accessible on my samba server. The screensaver was a welcome upgrade but bookmarks have never worked properly for me - initially allowing storage of 5 or so places and no way of deleting or editing them. Now since the firmware upgrade they no longer work at all.
Isn't there any way to have the bookmarks stored as a editable file in the root of hard drive directory or failing that at least the delete button on the remote could be made to work.
I know people have been looking at the firmware with a view to adding extra features and although we haven't heard from them in a while I'm sure with the addition of the SATA version of the player some development of the firmware must be happening.
Regards
Steveo
Welcome steveo3567 to this thread. I have personally never used the Bookmarks feature, so at the moment I cannot help you. Guys, does anyone else know this and can be of assistance?
Regarding new or 'hacked' firmwares, I wouldn't bet on this horse--both Phew and Antivirus don't seem to have the necessary free time or frame of mind to start hacking, and I understand them. And even if Novatron releases a sATA player, this doesn't guarantee it's based on the current model (probably a new one to support the H.264 protocol).
Konsti
Hello everyone,
Bought my player about a month ago and have been very pleased with it generally. Have even been able to listen to internet radio by streaming it to a file accessible on my samba server.
This is what I was hoping for, but dumb me it never occured to me, thank you very much for the idea, I am going to try this weekend to try it and set it up.
My favorite Internet radios stations are shoutcast (I ljust love winamp :) )
Guys, I was thinking about it yesterday, when steveo wrote his message. Can you please upload a sample of the internet radio file, here, or at least write the proper structure/syntax of it? What is the extension? What are its contents?
steveo3567 04-20-07, 02:14 PM Hello again and thanks for the welcome,
I used VLC media player in linux (there's also windows binaries available) and I made a little executable script that took an audio stream and transcoded it into a mp3. Unfortunately I'm in the middle of reinstalling gentoo so your best bet would be to use the vlc wizard from the gui to achieve the same result. Google will be your best pal here if you want to use the command line to achieve the same thing. Then all you have to do is output the mp3/mp4 file into a shared folder on your network and radio will then be accessible from your Iamm36HD box.
When I find the script I used I'll post it here.
Best wishes
Steveo
steveo3567 04-20-07, 05:38 PM Ok here it is.
Please forgive the crudeness but it should be sufficient to demonstrate the idea.
#!/bin/sh
echo Outputting url to file shared folder /tmp
vlc -vv mms://url
:sout='#transcode{acodec=mp3,ab=192}:std{access=file, mux=raw,url="/tmp/Output.mp3"}'
Susbititute url with the address of the desired station. Just make sure the output file is in a network accessible folder.
This works fine for me but I'm sure there are lots of different options people can try out themselves. Hope it is of some use.
Regards
Steveo

Ventura1977 04-24-07, 07:20 AM Hi ANTIVIRUS!
How is the gftp development going? You seems very quiet...
Cheers!
LordByron 04-24-07, 10:19 AM New firmware 1.154 out , you'll find it in the download section of http://www.hdd-player.de/
There isn't any release notes but using google translator (from german to english) it seems that fix some USB host iusses.
Hello LordByron, thanks for the info--I cannot find this update anywhere on the official Novatron site, so I guess this must be a leaked (beta or private?) firmware. Let's wait for the Korean friends to post this...!
I have also read the corresponding page on http://www.hdd-player.de/ and I advise all of you not to install it. This is probably an non-official firmware, and it most likely fixes problems with external USB devices (drives/sticks) but also adds stuff not tested, like:
- USB device file structure displays properly
- opened TCP ports (e-mail 25 and 110)
- in strtable.txt ID_OSD_LANG_EASTERN_EUROPE was added
- probably an new version of bin/busybox to 10.04
- changed osd.big.font and osd.font
- detected totally different linux.bin and curacao contents.
Read (via BabelFish.com) here: http://www.hdd-player.de/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=907
LordByron 04-25-07, 07:28 AM Hello,
In my NTD36HD's manual the site www.hd-player.de is indicated as an official site for firmware updates as well as www.iamm.co.kr (page 60 - Firmware upgrade) but I want to know well the changes before install the new firmware.
LordByron, when reading that page (via BabelFish) even the guys there asked if it was a test or beta release, despite the fact that it's not anywhere to be found on the Novatron site. Nevertheless, the fact that the download originates from a German/Swiss website (http://web258.c9.ibone.ch/Downloads/154.zip) makes me to want to seek, like yourself, more on the changes and fixes.
I guess people that use the USB functionality a lot will most probably need this fix (although my USB Flash Disk with FAT32 format never had problems).
Ventura1977: Antivirus is currently not available, he will be back soon (told me in a PM).
martin4u: Where have you stored the .ts files? Are you playing them via network, or from the local HDD? What if you select PAL instead of NTSC setting? (I don't think this may do any difference). Did you try to connect it via component? What if you downsize the picture to 720p? Does it still 'jump'?
Ventura1977 04-26-07, 04:43 AM I hope he is not in jail... :p
Btw, has anyone ever tried to put "Mvix MX-760 HD" firmware on the iamm?
Ott mar mukodik az ftp dolog...

clasami 05-01-07, 05:15 AM He appears not to be - just nort ready to put the money where his mouth is. Too bad, just lots of smoke without fire. We will have to make do with whatever we get in terms of firmware from the manufacturer.
Regards,
Michael
Guys, don't judge too fast. Antivirus is not a kid or student, so his time is quite restricted like mine. So come on, give him a break.
Nothing new on the site of Novatron, as of today. But I imagine that setting up an FTP service on the IAMM is not a solution; if the internal HDD is formatted in NTFS, there is no embedded driver to write to the device (via network) but only reading may be possible.
Formatting it in Linux (e.g. EXT3) format may not be a solution either, since we don't know if the firmware is compiled with the appropriate EXT3 drivers and if the (playback) system will work flawlessly...
Remember: all these media players are based on the bin/busybox platform, that's why they share many features and they can't really be expanded in functionality. Otherwise, set yourself up a home-theatre PC :p
REMOTE/UNIT PROBLEM...IS THIS A DESIGN/PRODUCTION FAULT?
Hi all, I am now on my third Iamm NTD36HD Sata unit from KJGlobal and all three units have been terrible regarding remote control use. The unit when first received with brand new batteries tried gives a range maximum of 4 metres approx for the remote to work then after 10-15 minutes this reduces to 1m to 2m. I have found this on all three units and KJGlobal keep sending them but are not saying this is a design fault. Very strange and very frustrating. The remote also has to exactly held at the right height direction and angle for any sort of response. As I have said different remotes and different units all have given the same results. KJGlobal have said the unit should be operating upto 10 metres. Maybe you guys have noit experienced this because you have the unit close to where you use the remote control or is this a design fault. I am so frustrated becasue the rest of the unit is great, I am just struggling with what to do after paying £200 for a unit that I have to be so close to I might as well be using the buttons on the top. Any feedback from what your unit is doing would be greatly appreciated.
Hello parney and welcome to the thread. I am using the IAMM remote from a short distance of about 2+ metres and not that often, so I can't really be of assistance to you.
Anyone else having troubles with the remote? Or working from a 4 metre distance?
Hi Konsti. Do me a favour and try what distance yours works to. I would be interested to see if you can go more than 3 or 4 metres. Also let me know if you have to be very accurate at that range with the remote (ie. height and direction you point remote) to get it to function. Cheers...
Anyone else have any feedback on this problem or willing to let me know what distance there one works at?
Hi Parney,
I'm using the "french" version which is called Cibox and I have exactly the same problem. RC works properly as soon as I'm in a range of 3m but as soon as I'm going to far only some buttons seems to react ...
I asked on a french forum and it seems we are not the only one experiencing this issue. Some are even looking for an external IR receiver.
Tre
clasami 05-05-07, 04:42 AM On the German site, there is ongoing development and Ext3 should not be a problem. There are other issues though - but we don't need antivirus with his attitude.

cHarOn99 05-05-07, 08:59 AM @clasami: ext3 is no problem i tried it already then also ftp works but the main Problem is curacao the gui the gui has no support for mounting the hdd when it is ext3 and then the next problem is when you mount the hdd over telnet after booting your iamm then curacao dont lists it, that is also when you transfer files over ndas to your box then you need to reboot that the transferd files shows up.
so mounting after boot is not working ;-(, I think only when we can moddify curacao or novatron brings out an firmware with ext3 support then we can do mor for this box. Mvix is there better with the firmware because they have already ftp, samba, ext3 included!!!!!!
greatz cHarOn
But i will look if we can make it without changing curacao then we will let ya know.
clasami 05-05-07, 03:13 PM Yeah, guess it's wothwhile to take a look at the MivX.
Regards,
Michael
cHarOn99 05-05-07, 05:05 PM OK, i wrote an mail to novatron about the ext3 situation, and also the admin from hdd-player.de gets in contact with novatron on monday about the ext3 thing, so i think we have good chances to see full ext3 support on the iamm ;-) but we will see.
Other thing what we or I can try is to take the curacao from the mvix and give it a try. I will think about it hehehe.
debrik is no problem so i think i will give it a try.
greatz cHarOn
cHarOn99 05-06-07, 05:57 AM ok here you can get the new modified firmware you have h+tp and f+p access to your iamm when ext3 is implemented then you can also write to your iamm.
hdd-player.de/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=996
sorry but i cant post urls to files?!?!?!
I wrote it in english and german so it should be no Problem hehe
greatz cHarOn
clasami 05-06-07, 02:46 PM cHarOn,
please don't scare us with the "hehehe". :)
Guys, can I really be frank and honest, as to why would anyone need HTTP services on the IAMM? Perhaps I can understand EXT3, if indeed FTP works faster (in/out) than NDAS software (which restricts me to Windows, although I have a MacIntel and don't think the drivers are Intel-compatible).
But if you format the internal HDD in EXT3 and you attach it to a PC via USB, don't you need drivers to be able to access the drive? The last time I checked for EXT3 driver for Windows, I didn't find anything official, just some software over at sourceforge.net!
Should we really ask Novatron to implement EXT3 when they still need to offer use more media-related capabilities?
cHarOn99 05-07-07, 04:11 AM the main point is that f-t-p isnt faster but i can now access my iamm from everywhere i want with usb and ext3 you dont have Problems because there are good driversolutions for ext3 under windows, under mac i only found one fast!!.
fs-driver best ext3 driver for Windows
ext2fsx for Mac
the f-t-p and h-t-t-p access gives you speed around 2,5MB/sec so it isnt that fast as NDAS right now.
I also work on nfs for the iamm i hope i can get it run this week or next week but right now i love f-t-p and h-t-t-p because i have access over my linux box without ndas ****.
greatz cHarOn
cHarOn99 05-07-07, 04:17 AM ah one thing also when we have ext3 on the iamm there are many more ways to improve the iamm because then there are ways for id-tag or other software that needs write support!!! because the iamm is an linux box so why use ntfs which is bad implemented!!! with ext3 there are no restrictions, and i think novatron will include that. about http do you know the twonky server?! if yes then you know how nice it is to stream over any box to the content of the iamm ;-)
greatz cHarOn
Hey, cHarOn99, thanks for your explanatory post. I am getting older and no time for me to devote to Linux, so that's why I couldn't understand the ideas you're working on.
Please, do me a favour. I really want to access the bitmap fonts of the subtitles (not the Menus) and include Greek instead of the extended ASCII characters. Can you possibly help me and locate the actual file and also what type it is? I could then perhaps try to open it with some Fonts software over in Windows, although I doubt it will work...
With some MTK chipset-based DVD players, this was possible; some guys opened the .bin firmware, replaced the character set with Latin-Greek (instead of the original Latin-Extended Latin) and repackaged the firmware. Can we do the same, here?
Thanks in advance.
cHarOn99 05-07-07, 04:29 AM i´m not at home right now but i will take a look on that dont know right now if it is in the gui but i think that they are outside of th egui so if it is outside there is no Problem i will send you the file to edit ok.
cHarOn99, it's most probably outside the GUI. In the past, Phew or Antivirus sent me the following bitmap font files to edit:
osd.8859.big.font
osd.8859.font
osd.big.font
osd.font
These are most probably just GUI fonts, not the subtitle fonts. The problem is that they are in a format that I cannot open/read/access/modify, so please, if you have the chance, check for us the file format. If it's Linux, then can you open them?
I will try to contact Novatron for some answers. Who did you contact?
cHarOn99 05-07-07, 04:51 AM when it is outside the gui then i will find it and send it to you but if it is included in the gui then only novatron can help you, but as i said i will take a look on it tonight.
masdigvid 05-07-07, 09:24 AM Hi all!
This is my first post here and since I am thinking of joining you all as a NTD36HD owner, I would like to ask a couple of questions.
1) Does the NTD36HD have an overall good performance in playing different video contents (DIVX, MPEG-2, TS and especially HD contents such as WMV9 or HD Avi)?
2) Are there any known issues in playing DVD ISO both from internal HDD and streaming from PC?
3) Can anyone confirm that it is possible to switch audio track on the fly during video file or DVD ISO playback (the MVIX 760HD does not allow it)?
4) Are there any problems with seeking a video file during its playback, that is Fast Forwarding / Reverse?
5) During video playback I can see from the manual that if you press INFO button twice a progress bar is displayed. Is it possible to scroll the bar using left and right arrow button in order to move the current playing position within the file? Or is there any other similar feature other than manually typing the play time you want to jump to?
6) Has anyone tried to play a large MPEG-2 file (> 4 GB) till the end without any problem?
Thank you in advance for answering.
cHarOn99 05-08-07, 10:22 AM @Konsti: About the Font thing there are only teh osd.......font files on the box and this cant be open so i think you have to contact novatron about your problem
sorry for that
cHarOn99, thanks for checking out the firmware yourself, did you only find the fonts I mentioned before (GUI or OSD)? I can't figure out what format they are in... Linux bitmaps or other.
I have contacted Novatron, but so far, not even a reply. Thanks again.
Hello masdigvid, welcome to this thread. I cannot reply to all your questions, since I haven't done thorough technical tests on this player (no time and honestly, you won't find the perfect player out there!).

1. I have played without problems WMV HD from a Microsoft sampler DVD, AVI files (XviD at various HR resolutions) and DivX 5 (more rarely), AC-3 and MP3 audio in these, but no .TS since the MPEG-2 HD files are huge and I can't spend my DSL bandwitdh getting 19GB for one movie...
2. Internally (HDD) there aren't issues, but streaming could be a problem for anything. It depends on your server's capabilities, too. I have never played ISOs from the network (especially not WiFi).
3. I can't confirm it. On normal DVD playback on DVD stand-alone players, the on-the-fly switching of audio or subtitles also depends on the disc permissions.
4. Up to x4 forward, the video is smooth, but beyond that it's obviously jumpy, and that makes sence (i.e. I-frames displayed only) due to more bandwidth/transfer rate required. Generally, I am happy. Only on badly-encoded XviD files I had problems, including playback and seeking.
5. You can't scroll anything. When the progress bar is displayed, if you press LEFT or RIGHT arrows, the player will start fast-forwarding or rewinding, accordingly. The bar is for information purposes, only (how can you scroll without a mouse pointer?) and I haven't found a way to go to a specific time e.g. 32:05 of an episode I may be watching. Just good old fast-forward :)
6. NTFS can support large files (internal HDD) but I haven't played large .avi files or .ts files (what do you mean by MPEG-2, are they .m2v or .vob?). Normally, you shouldn't have a problem--perhaps if it's streamed and HD, then you might.
If you speak German, go to http://www.hdd-player.de/ where it appears more people exchange their views. Come back and tells us what you found!

By large MPEG-2 I mean MPEG-2 files coming from a DVD recorder or single MPEG-2 you can get through VobEdit processing ripped DVD VOBs and combing them into one single large file.
bookmarks have never worked properly for me [...] Now since the firmware upgrade they no longer work at all.
1) Can others confirm this? Which firmware are bookmarks known to work?
2) I know that the NTD36HD has an automatic bookmark feature that is when you resume playing a previously stopped video, it asks you if you want to resume from the point you stopped. Does this feature still work with the latest firmware?
[...] initially allowing storage of 5 or so places and no way of deleting or editing them.
3) Does this mean that the 6th bookmark and following ones do NOT overwrite older ones (so that you always have 5 available) ?
4) Does anybody know if bookmarks work with video files streamed from a PC too?
masdigvid 05-11-07, 02:47 AM I'd like to know which information are displayed when you hit the INFO button during video playback:
1) Is the video resolution shown?
2) Is the video/audio bitrate displayed?
3) During DVD playback are the language and the nr. of channels (e.g. 2.0, 5.1, etc...) shown for the audio track currently choosen?
Please, could someone be so kind to post a couple of screenshots of the INFO screen?
Thank you in advance.
needmorstuff 05-11-07, 02:19 PM hi all - does this unit support playback of commercial dvd's via a usb connected dvd? (as in a dvd you have bought from a store with copyright css protection)
cHarOn99 05-11-07, 02:45 PM yes this is supported because iamm is one with an css licence so you can play commercial DVD´s but there is also an new protection system on some new DVD´s which cant be played over the iamm.

Ventura1977 05-18-07, 03:18 AM Hi,
I am trying to get the idea behind this tweaking.
So you can access the Iamm via the net from anywhere now, as it functioning like an FTP server right?
Will the NDAS file transfer still work with Ext3?
Is there any way to run torrent client on the iamm?
I think it would be great if cHarOn99 could integrate some extra features as well like internet radio or weather forecast... What you say cHarOn99?
cHarOn99 you are the dude! Thank you for your German correspondence and work on the firmware!
When did build 155 come out? Are you referring to the hdd-player.de build?
But how can I format to EXT3 if I am not a Linux user? I can handle Mac, Windoz but no Linux, so is there any real meaning into getting this build? (FAT32 is out of the question, for 300+ GB drives!) besides running http and ftp?
I am still skeptic since Novatron hasn't even published 154 yet, despite my 3 mails to their "support"...! I am quite disappointed with them.
Anyway, congratulations for your work. I hope it's stable as a rhino :)
cHarOn99 05-18-07, 04:17 AM the reason why 154 and 155 didnt comes out offical is that hdd-player has some good dont know the word in english now but the can make heat to novatron lol sorry for that and thats the reason why we get 155 ext3 support and the 154 with usb fix so it is official for hdd-player.de and i think there will be also then a official release but i think it would be 156 so it is without problems to take the firmware.
ext3 you can format with partition magic or something similar.
greatz cHarOn
cHarOn99 I think I understand what you mean... The German forum seems more interested in fixing/updating the firmware than Novatron themselves! This should hopefully push Novatron to make a new official firmware! But they seem so lazy!
Please, returning to the OSD fonts--I tried to contact Novatron and ask them, but no reply. The binary files inside e.g. osd.8859.big.font folder and others, can you tell me what type of bitmap binaries they are? I can't seem to be able to open them with a Windows font editor.
If they are Linux, perhaps you can tell me what type of Linux system the IAMM is using, so that I can search for such tools. Is it based on e.g. busybox for example?
Any help would be appreciated--Konsti.
cHarOn99 05-18-07, 08:51 AM nope it looks like that there is no way to open it i tried it also with no result. Sorry for that when i have the next todo thing for novatron i will tell them your problem.
greatz cHarOn
Thanks cHarOn! What I request is simple: in the 8-bit bitmap fonts, to replace the extended ASCII characters (for Western Europe, e.g. umlaut characters etc.) with the corresponding Greek characters (from a TrueType unicode font). That's all.
If you find out what binary type of file this is, perhaps we can do it ourselves. I appreciate your interest! Konsti
calderon 05-19-07, 05:21 AM i need a quik reset mode for Iamm Ntd36HD..
what i must press if Ntd36HD rebooted for factory settings ?
he start to normal blue screen and then goes to black screen .. WTF !!
i work after this error with bootloader.bin / romfs.bin with TFTP.
but after restart the same :-(
regards
i GOT THE SAME PROBLEM !!
But i even dont change anything! Black screen after boot....
Do yo find a solution? it's my second device that s doing the same bug !!
thank you
cHarOn99 05-19-07, 07:28 AM i also had this Problem but with 1.1.154 and now with 1.1.155 i dont get this error anymore so i think that the firmware was the Problem on my side.
greatz cHarOn
calderon 05-19-07, 10:08 AM But how do you change the firmware? the blackscreen make me unable to do the upgrade.
cHarOn99 05-19-07, 10:12 AM for me sometimes the iamm starts complete after 10 or 20 trys power out and in and start again then i flashed it and now no probs anymore if your iamm dont starts then send it back for warrenty.
greatz cHarOn
calderon 05-19-07, 11:03 AM I ve patch it in 154 with hex edit method, then antivirus method...and it seems to work.
i ll try 155 if i got a bug with 154, because i cant format in ext3 (win xp will not see it if i do so, right?)
cHarOn99 05-19-07, 11:26 AM on this site lol look a little bit up ;-) post 198

calderon 05-19-07, 11:29 AM already read this one, and Thank you for posting it, but as i said, i cant connect my box to my PC (win Xp) by USB if i format the box in ext3, right?
If i do so Xp will not see the files?
cHarOn99 05-19-07, 11:38 AM you have to install an driver from http://www.fs-driver.org/index.html but you can still stay with ntfs thats no problem only when you want to upload files to your iamm over ftp then you need ext3 or fat32 but fat32 is no solution.
You can format your hdd to ext3 with partition magic or something like that ;-) or with an linux live cd and then install the ext3 driver from the link above and you can normaly work with ext3 under windows. My Data HDD in Windows is for years now on ext3 without any Problems.
when you make Ext3 you have to make teh folders MOVIE MUSIC PHOTO casesensitive because the iamm wants it so ;-)
greatz cHarOn
calderon 05-20-07, 02:39 AM thank you all for your usefull help !!
the fs driver is for ext2, does it works for ext3 too?
cHarOn99 05-20-07, 03:32 AM yep works perfekt with ext3 ;-) ext3 is only ext2 with journaling feature and it backward compatible. So you can take the driver without any problems
calderon 05-20-07, 03:56 AM Thanks For All !
cHarOn99 05-20-07, 03:57 AM np when i have time then i can help ;-)
for me sometimes the iamm starts complete after 10 or 20 trys power out and in and start again then i flashed it and now no probs anymore if your iamm dont starts then send it back for warrenty.
greatz cHarOn
I confirm. I had to reset my CYBOX more than 47 times, but at least I had one opportunity to directly update the firmware to 2.154 :D :D :D that I have done immediatly :p
Congratulations and many many thanks to all of you for your support, and more specially to cHarOn99 and Konsti
cHarOn99 rulez ;)
Tomorrow I will post photos of a small "operation" I performed to the IAMM to stabilize the internal (IDE) HDD that was moving inside... too much space and no foam holders... You will see. Cheers to all.
cHarOn99 05-21-07, 03:58 AM cHarOn99 rulez
lol thx for the flowers haha, i will look forward to see your photos.
greatz cHarOn
So here it is. I have noticed that my IDE drive, inside the IAMM, has been "moving" or shifting inside the plastic case, mainly because there were no foam holders to "tighten" the drive on the sides. This was solved by making a small "addition" to the player.
I opened it carefully, placed the two adhesive-foam strips (you can buy them at any DIY shop) and closed the box again. Now, when I inserted the HDD it is not moving at all, inside the casing.
You can do it yourselves, it's quick and easy. You are adding something Novatron should have done before shipping... or during design :p
Konsti
Step 1 - Unscrew the side screws carefully with a Phillips screwdrive, remove them.
Step 2 - Place the IAMM vertically (standing) and unscrew the small black screw on the top, then slide the plastic fascia vertically, to remove it completely.
Step 3 - Carefully remove the top cover completely, so that the IAMM now has the two parts separate, the cover and the body of the player.
Step 4 - Cut the advesive-foam strips to the length of the inner HDD casing, and stick them carefully (horizontally) only on the cover, not the body! The HDD slides by touching the white plastic bay of the player, and the space is left between the cover and the drive (where the strips are placed).
Step 5 - You are done! Reverse-close and screw the box back in place!
It's quite easy, just be patient and first buy the advesive-foam strips (used to seal doors and windows) from a DIY store!
Konsti
cHarOn99 05-24-07, 08:25 AM nice tut konsti but for all if you made this modification then your warrenty isnt anymore!!
greatz cHarOn
cHarOn I disagree. Before I did this, I could stick this strip from the HDD opening; the initial attempt was a badly aligned strip, so later I decided to just open it.
This is not a modification, in the sense of a firmware update or soldering--just a simple trick!
cHarOn99 05-24-07, 11:29 AM normaly when you open the iamm you dont have warrenty anymore!!
greats cHarOn
cHarOn99 you are right. Although there was no sticky seal broken that would void the warranty, I did open the box for this minor "modification". So don't try this at home, kids!
However, the conditions under which I bought it (via eBay from a German reseller of doubtful support) don't make me worry about warranty, simple 'cos I probably don't have any! ;)
cHarOn99, regarding the fonts and their (binary) format, I have sent the same e-mail to Novatron (via their website, they don't have an e-mail address) three times and no-one cared to respond. I did write a polite e-mail but I don't think they would respond to such requests: indicate the file type of the fonts (if the know it!)
Can you suggest any other alternative or method for us to detect what kind of font types (file-type) these GUI files are? Any thoughts are appreciated. Anyone?

cHarOn thank you for the update. My internal HDD is amost full and formatted in NTFS. Will I have a problem using it with this firmware? If a normal user (not an expert such as you guys) wants to use this firmware, will there be a problem in functionality because of NTFS?
Is NDAS still working in this version? How about the USB connection to a PC? I guess I can still move/copy/delete data on NTFS, right? (dumb question)
Is the IAMM's response to playing video now lower, due to all the services that are running at the same time? I mean, since these services run all the time, is the device slower in any way?
BTW: I just checked the IAMM site, the Korean programmers haven't post anything... The don't care, it seems.
:( cHarOn is there anyone you can ask about the type of bitmap fonts used in this firmware? I am so unhappy...!
cHarOn99 05-31-07, 08:12 AM i talked to them but right now i dont know if thats your needs they included an new gui language called eastern europe mayby this will help you, this firmwares are special for hdd-player.de produced. i think that novatron brings later an big update because the give teh firmware production out to indien.
My internal HDD is amost full and formatted in NTFS. Will I have a problem using it with this firmware? If a normal user (not an expert such as you guys) wants to use this firmware, will there be a problem in functionality because of NTFS?
no the only thing you cant do is to upload to your iamm per ftp, but download from ftp or http works also with ntfs.
Is NDAS still working in this version? How about the USB connection to a PC? I guess I can still move/copy/delete data on NTFS, right? (dumb question)
Yes it works as long as you stay with NTFS Ndas works when you convert your HDD to ext3 then NDAS doesnt work anymore. Then you have to take ftp to upload to the iamm.
USB connection also works with NTFS without Problems when you take ext3 then you need an driver for Windows and then again everything works normal.
Is the IAMM's response to playing video now lower, due to all the services that are running at the same time? I mean, since these services run all the time, is the device slower in any way?
nope the services takes only cpu power when you use them when you watch an movie, but it works great i watch an movie and transfer new movies to the iamm then the transferrate goes down to 1megabyte/sec but no difference in watching tv ;-)
ok i hope i answered all your Questions
greats cHarOn
cHarOn, thanks for taking the time to reply to this forum, too.
Adding an OSD language (Easter European) such as Polish, Czech etc. doesn't mean that the guys introduced new characters in the fonts--most probably, they were there all this time (extended ASCII table). I can't be 100% certain, though.
Can I ask you, since I don't know any German, to make a post there and ask the people that did this language addition for more info? Did they just add menus and text or subtitle support?
Could you perhaps post a request for more info on the fonts themselves, if someone knows, over at hdd-player.de? Will they accept posts in English?
Danke--Konsti
cHarOn99 06-01-07, 03:39 AM i will forward you question to hdd-players contact at novatron ok.

Hi,
I am a french user of the IAMM HD player and I have just installed 1.55 firmware to do ftp because of this fu..g NDAS and my Imac or PC. After 4 days of using this I have now a black screen after booting and he iamm is blocked. I would ike to know how I can solve it because I didn't understood how to put factory setting in the last posts.
How can I communicate with the Iamm : eth ? crossed eth ?
THKS
calderon 06-02-07, 03:47 AM ethernet si tu connecte à un routeur, cross si direct pc
Hello muzo, I am sorry to hear you have problems with the latest firmware of the IAMM. Connect it to your PC with a cross-cable (direct connection) and use tFTP method described before--read carefully, you should be able to salvage your IAMM.
Good luck, let us know the results.
cHarOn99 06-04-07, 05:00 AM @muzo please after reactivate your iamm the flash 1.1.157 which i cant distribute here you can find it on http://www.hdd-player.de/phpBB2/index.php but you have to register befor you can download it.
best wishes cHarOn
Hi,
Many thanks for the how to flash the box by tftp.
It's possible that my black screen is caused to my fu..ing network. I put an static ip to see.
I hope that there will be new firmware with incresed function and why not a web browser ?
Best regards.
Hi again,
Another crash with 1.57 firmware when i was used to conect the box with cross cable to my notebook.
cHarOn99 06-06-07, 03:27 PM hmmmm did you try an other cabel?!?!? I hadnt any problems with the 1.1.157. do you have fat32 as system?!?! it can also be that your IAMM has an hardware failure.
cHarOn
Hi cHarOn
The pb has happened when I was switching the box between wireless network to wired network. The Hd was mounted and I change parameter in the box to save time in the downloading. After the swith the box has restarted and black out.
I have a fat 32 sytem.
I will put 1.57 firmaware again.
Best regards
cHarOn99 06-07-07, 12:36 AM hi muzo please dont take fat32 in the german forum many peoples had problems with fat32 after converting or reformating them to ntfs or ext3 they had no problems anymore.
So please try to format your drive!
cHarOn
muzo, please tell me you did not try to flash the new firmware with wireless network... please... it's a suicide!
cHarOn, what if muzo tries to re-flash it WITHOUT any HDD attached? Is that possible?
cHarOn99 06-07-07, 04:26 AM yep is possible without any problems
Don't worry cHarOn ,
I flash the firmaware with a crossed cable and no by the wirless.
I formated my hdd in fat32 thinking that it would be easy to convert to ntfs it when the ftp would be ok with ntfs .
i don't know if it will be one day. Ext3 need to put a driver on your hdd what is not very cool when you go with your box outside. If there 's no choice I will format it.
Another question : I always have to unmount and mount the hdd drive with telnet when I want to ul. Is there an existing script ? Dos the pb exist with ext3 ?
Best regards

----> added cpmovie, cpphoto, cpmusic

Patched firmware for Novatron NTD36HD ftp,http,telnet,ext3,usb2hdd and init_script* (based on build 157)
============================================================ ============================================
---- USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! ---- USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! ----
If you brick your player using this firmware the only way
to debrick it is in rescue mode through tftp.
Changelog: 1.1.157 to 1.2.157
1. Added cpmovie, cpphoto, cpmusic, scripts and sleep /usr/local/bin
2. cpmovie: plugin USB -HDD -Stick or -CAM to your IAMM, if on the device is an Folder called
* * * * * * *MOVIE everything inside gets copied to the internal EXT3 HDD MOVIE Folder
* * * * * * *
* * cpmusic: plugin USB -HDD -Stick or -CAM to your IAMM, if on the device is an Folder called
* * * * * * *MUSIC everything inside gets copied to the internal EXT3 HDD MUSIC Folder*
* * * * * * *
* * cpphoto: plugin USB -HDD -Stick or -CAM to your IAMM, if on the device is an Folder called
* * * * * * *PHOTO everything inside gets copied to the internal EXT3 HDD PHOTO Folder* * * * * * * * * *
3. Changed /etc/inittab to start both of them:
* *# Startup the system
* *::once:/usr/curacao/curacao
* *::once:/usr/sbin/telnetd &
* *::once:/usr/local/bin/ftpd &
* *::once:/usr/local/bin/shttpd -d / &
* *::once:/usr/local/bin/scripts
* *
4. ::once:/usr/local/bin/scripts
* * This script is really simple it looks in root of the internal hdd or on an usb device
* * for an script called init_script, if there is an file called init_script it will starts this script
* * Whats the use of that? Really simple you can mount NFS shares ;-) you can run the cpmovie, cpphoto, ....
* * commands. or everything you want. An init_script to mount an NFS share or to do the 3 copy routines
* * are in the zip you downloaded ;-)
Usage:
1. Install just like a usual firmware upgrade
2. You must format your HDD with ext3, fat32 is no option anymore because users have many problems with it.
3. Log in using telnet: user = root, password = hdd
4. Log in using ftp (Upload works! but not everything): user = ftp, password = ftp* * *if you want full write access (create directories, .......)you have to* * * * *login with user = root, pass = hdd
* * Note: The ftpd takes 10-20 seconds to respond! Be patient
5. Log in with your Browser to download files (only Download)
6. To get to your Harddisk you need go to /tmp/ide/part1
Thanks:
Thx go to the admin from www.hdd-player.de who makes it possible that Novatron includes ext3 support.
Thx goes to Dirk alias (dm) who helps me and compiles some nights.
Thx goes to OK from the Mvix Community who gets the stuff working (ftpd and shttpd)
I wish you all good luck.

Bono2007 06-09-07, 05:26 PM Hello, i'm a french "Cibox" user, and i've done a "little update" with 1.2.157 firmware.
It's a great job you've done, with ftp, and scripts possibilities.
I've a problem with subtitles .srt, fonts are too big, and i don't know if it's possible to change. Do you have an idea ?
cHarOn99 06-10-07, 06:15 AM @Bono2007: sorry but i cant change that because it is closed source.
cHarOn
cHarOn99, great work, well done. Although I haven't tested any of this firmware, I am sure a lot of people will get excited ;)
Please include, if possible in the next release, an intelligent subtitle code/routine that will remove the < i > and < /i > (as well as < b > and < /b >) from subtitle text in the .srt format that is very common!
ThAnKs!
