View Full Version : Pre-Movie Slides
HDReady102
12-05-06, 03:50 PM
Due to the projected mid-2007 release of Steven Good’s next compilation of Coke slides, I set out to create my own offering in the same spirit. I am just days away from completing nearly 510 slides! These are high res 16:9 format jpg’s, ready to be dropped into DVD authoring software of your choice. Categories are as follows:
•Popular movie trivia from the 1990’s – Pulp Fiction, Armageddon, Austin Powers, etc.
•Indiana Jones trilogy trivia
•Actor Real / Reel Names – stars that changed their names – can you match the star to the name?
•Star Name Scramble – jumbled letters with a clue slide to help
•Movie Ratings – G, PG, PG-13, R and NC-17
•Miscellaneous Slides – cell phones off, no talking, snacks, etc.
•Cinematic Stills – captures from an upcoming movie, DVD or released title
•Movie Mistakes – continuity errors, blunders, and outright goof-ups that ended up in the movie
•1 custom slide with the name of your home theater
Below are examples of the Movie Mistakes, Indiana Jones and Star Name Scramble categories. (Please keep in mind posting limits, the example files are compressed and scaled down)
Movie Mistakes - Movie Mistake8.jpg (see attachment)
Example Question Slide - IndyQ5.jpg (see attachment)
Example Answer Slide - Scrambled16a.jpg (see attachment)
More details to follow as I put the finishing touches on the remaining slides.

ditto what rsante said - I'd be interested depending on the price. IIRC, steven was kind enough to dispense these at only the cost of CD and postage.

The slides look great. I am another interested party.
If you are charging for them, please let us know (per the above post).
If you will be offering them up for free, may I suggest distributing them via torrent site. The HT Demo discs have been very successful in this area. One of the forum member, Bob, has a site up and going already. Possibly he will host the torrent there. I am sure that many interested parties will do the work of seeding.

Hi Digital Man,
I have certainly made for myself auto running DVD's - and with these new slides. The seemingly insurmountable issue is when adding popular background music - not infringing on copyrights. That one has me perplexed. Even some of these so called free music sites have rates for using the music. At one time I had thought about purchasing the three or four songs needed from a pay per song site (.99 each). For each DVD made, I would purchase those songs to correspond to the number of DVD's made. My thought was that they had been legitimately purchased once for one person. My friends keep poking holes in this logic. But you are correct, the slides are cool, but once you make a DVD pre-show, you take it up a notch.

Digital Man,
You don't need a HTPC to make the pre-show dvd. Any PC with a DVD burner and Nero, Pinnacle Studio, or other film editing software will work. Once the slides are arranged in the software, drop in some background music you already own (I like John Williams soundtracks) and you have your DVD. The advantage to this method is you can change you dvd multiple times with new slides, new music, previews of coming attractions etc.

BTW, I am in too HDReady102. I subscribed to this thread so I know when to order. These slides will mix in nicely with Volume 3 of the Coke slides I got from Steven last year. Thanks for all your hard work!!

Yes, I actually have authored DVD's before. I was just thinking how convienent it would be if someone did it and shared it. It really should be HDReady102, so people could give him the donations.
HDReady102, I didn't even think about the music that might require a royalty. I wonder if there is any music that is in the public domain that you could use. Like aren't a lot of classical compositions released to the public domain since they are so old?
Thanks,
Guy

If you are looking for good quality royalty music to use, take a look at FreePlay Music (http://www.freeplaymusic.com). This is what I used when I did my DVD; I esp like "Sir Robin Of Locksley", "South Sea" and "Pirate's Nest"

This is a great project and the slides are very well done. Part of the problem though is that even if a song is public domain, the recording of it may not be.
If anyone wanted to invest some money into this, like many of the group projects, you could find a composer online and ask for 'genre' style songs to be composed. Pitching in would keep your investment cost down and if enough people went in on it, I'm sure it would be very cool.
There should be plenty of places for you to find royalty free music though, even as listed in the reply above.
Well done, again.

I have an extensive collection of royalty free music that i use for videos and DVDs. While I just can't give it away (licensing issues) I could "score" a video file with it and be within the scope of the licensing agreement.

Well, I stayed up WAY too late last night putting together some intros. Still not there yet but close to completing one intro. I organized the slides into different albums in iPhoto, and then imported those into iMovie. Added some transitions, adjusted the time for each slide to allow for reading and viola!! :)
The problem is (or not really a problem) - between these slides and the Coke slides I have 10 folders with 80 slides per folder and estimate about a 15 minute intro movie of JUST slides PER folder. Zoiks!!! :) And I have not even used ALL of the slides yet!!
I tried testing some slides via my Oppo usb and also the SD card reader - but think that making a DVD to play on my 2nd player will yield the best resolution and flexibility.
Again - for "bang for your buck" this is easily the best deal out there - with a little work I can see having a LOT of fun with this. I only now need to get iMovie HD so I can make a better PQ DVD with some movie trailers added in. :)
The bonus is that just reading the slides and organizing them i have learned a lot if stuff I never knew! :)
Count me in. This is great! Where can I send payment?
Steven
I just started the same process today :) I have a bumch of photos in iphoto as a folder and I am now working on them in iMovie. Once the transitions are added it really brings these things to life. I am leaving about 5 seconds for each slide to be viewed. I also will mix some of the coca cola series in since my son is really into star wars and that has lots of star wars trivia questions. cough cough wink wink :)

Cool! I was suprised though that when I started watching the slides in the preview in iMovie - I really needed more than 5 seconds - some of the longer ones I wind up with up to 14 seconds (The "whats my job" slides, ones with a lot of text, etc) I tried to view it as I figure a guest would - see the slide come up, casually scan it a bit, then start reading it in a casual way. For some this takes longer than you might think. I will have to play with it for sure, but I might err on the side of a bit too long than too short. Answer slides I cut to around 3-5 seconds and the movie scene slides I have around 5-7 seconds.
I am trying to figure out what sort of music to add - that has been the hardest part.
I am going to wait until I have iMove HD to mess with adding trailers, etc - since the regular version of iMovie just can't cut it audio and screen size wise...
Yeah I have iMovie HD and might purchase Quicktime pro so I can download HD trailers and add them on. And yes some of the longer Q's esp the indiana Jones i needed to stretch out to like 10-12 seconds.
I am a media person at my church and we are finding that (in general) 8 seconds per slide (church announcements) gives the average person time to read the slide. Some will need to be longer; some shorter.

Now that several of you have received the Pre-movie slides, I would like some feedback on things that you like or dislike.
Two questions that I had while making these were:
- Do you prefer the 3-D lettering of say, the Indiana Jones trivia, or the more simple (and easier to read) lettering of the 90's trivia?
- How is the difficulty of the trivia questions? I tried to choose questions that would challenge the movie connoisseur (namely the AVS community). This group typically loves movies, discusses and picks them apart and have viewed many of the good ones several times. I ran all the questions thru a panel of 10 people and had them rate them. The Difficulty score is based on the average. I would say that there are more Difficulty 3,4, and 5 questions than Difficulty 1 and 2. Would you rather have questions that challenge you the Home Theater owner or your "average knowledge" audience?
I'm sure there are more items I would like feedback on....just drawing a blank right now.

Got mine the other day, took a quick look and they look AWESOME.
Great job. :D
I think the text in the 90's trivia is much cleaner. The indy text actually looks a little blurry do to the 3d look.
The trivia are hard because none of the movies (other than the indys) we really know to well. It would be cool to see some star wars, LOTR, spriderman, maybe family movie (shrek, cars, nemo, etc) trivia. Not complaining by any stretch just making suggestions. Maybe a couple blank frames so people could add their own trivia based off their favorite movies?
Overall though loving these. I have completed the first 2:30 of my intro. Thanks again.

There is the fine line between cool and practical. Of course, viewing the slides on the 110" screen makes everything easy to read :)
Family movie trivia is going on the list if I do another one of these.
HDReady102
The slides look great. In response to your question I think I like the lettering format in the 90's trivia better than the 3D. I like the trivia questions, while they may be harder I think it is great for people to learn something new with the slides. Now I just have to work on organizing them and getting things set up. Thanks a lot, they look great.
-Pete
Can you PM the ordering info to me......Thanks
I'm really new at this so do you run the slide CD on screen while people are getting them settled in their seats then take it out and put in the movie or is there a way of just switching from one to the other-I guess you'd need two DVD players in different inputs.
Thanks sog3
HDReady102
12-22-06, 05:06 PM
Hi Sog3,
See if this is any help.
For those of you who are new to the concept of pre-movie slides, read further for a quick primer. Playing the CD in your DVD player can have mixed results depending on your DVD player. Some DVD players do well with .jpgs and others produce photos with jagged edges and blocky text. The best way to use these slides is to create a mini movie and burn it to a DVD. The .jpg slides can be brought into software such as DVD Lab or Nero or Movie Maker. There, one can set the length of time that a slide is displayed and even add music tracks to play in the background. There is no formula for slide time. Several factors include (but are not limited to): length of text the audience must read to understand a question, level of difficulty for each question, and font size and legibility used for a particular slide. Typically slides need to be on screen for a duration of 3-12 seconds. Remember that children read slower and not everyone is paying full attention to the slides during this “getting ready for the feature” time so you may need to add increase the time by a few seconds to accommodate for those distractions. Pre-movie slide shows are typically 5, 10 or 15 minutes long. Some HT enthusiasts even add movie trailers, THX or Dolby trailers and voiceovers to their presentation.
The completed compilation of slides and music is then typically burned to an auto run DVD. Usually the pre-movie DVD is put in DVD player #1 and the feature presentation for the night is put in DVD player #2. The movie is usually queued up to the opening title and paused. When the audience is seated, DVD player #1 is turned on and plays the pre-movie show. As soon as it ends the theater owner switches to DVD player #2 and you get an almost seamless transition. There are other variations such as having all the slides on a HT computer and having a software program randomly choose slides so that each time the pre-movie slides are shown they are different. For those with programmable remotes, you can have lights dim or shut off at the point where you switch from pre-movie to feature presentation etc.

Recieved mine today as well. Checked out a few of them and they look awesome. Can't wait to delve more deeply into them.

I received mine a few days ago and had some spare time to play around with them. I put together a 30 minute DVD and added voice overs and music. I need to go back and adjust the audio between the music and voice over track, but these slides are beautiful and well worth it...thanks!!
can't wait for Volume 2 :)
oh...I did notice a small typo...in the 90's movie tirvia, the question/answer for slide #19, it reads:
"...one if Tyler's..."
shouldn't that be:
"...one of Tyler's..."

If any of you use Xbox Media Center, I've taken a orphaned python script and hacked it so that it does the following
5 to 10 minutes of these or stephens slides with mp3 music in the background.
1 to 2 Drive in theater promos.
1 cartoon
1 to 5 trailers from apple
then the feature presentation
PM me if you would like a copy
Got my CD the other day and put together a pre-movie compilation. By the way these slides are perfect. Very, very good job! Just my two cents here, but I was trying to think of some good music for a pre-movie slide show and I ended up using some Wes Montgomery jazz guitar tracks, and the results were awsome. Another idea I had was to record some of the ending credit music from some movies and use that. For instance maybe some Mark Knopfler tunes from "The Princess Bride" Morgan

I've attached the script. This is a very *rough* script so far. I don't yet have any functionality to automagically grab apple trailers, though, hopefully sometime it will.
If you want to view Stephens trivia (haven't gotten HD's trivia yet) put all the jpegs into
f:Trivia
Adjust Trivia_num and Time to variables you want. Lower time will result in faster changes.
If you want music, put mp3 or wma files into
f:music
These will just play along with the trivia.
For the Drive in movie clips (from archive org) put them into
f:commer
If you have a cartoon (Looney tunes, Pixar shorts, or don hertsfield) put it into
f:cartoon
If you want to show any of the noisy Studio intros (find lilnks here on avsforum) put them into
f:studio
If you want a THX intro, put it into
f:thx
If you want to put in some Policy trailers put them into
f:policy
PSA's go into f:psa, trailers go into f:trailers (all over the net)
If you don't want one of those video clips, just change the number to 0
All I ask for is if you can point me in the right direction to buy/dl more video clips.
Oh, and as I have time, I will work on it as well.

MadDucks,
What programs is the script for? Or, what program does this script use?
Edit: OK I see a page or two ago you mentioned a program called "XBOX Media Center" I would think this is different from Windows Media Center. So does Xbox media center run on the PC or the Xbox/360?
MadDucks
12-27-06, 12:31 PM
XBMC (google for it) runs on Xbox's that have been altered to allow non microsoft code to run on them. Thanks to XBMC I can write python scripts to get it to do what I want.
In essense they become little video players. I currently have my Xbox hooked up to my dell projector.
The current run of Xbox 360s have some video built in from what I hear (not going to buy one until Halo 3). I haven't found any instructions on getting XBMC to run on the 360 though. It is probably just a matter of time.

HDReady is asking for pennies compared to what you end up getting...which is 3-5 intros worth of content...professionally done content.
HD, I second what someone else said in broadening the themes used like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc. Perhaps each release could focus on 1-2 in much the same way as this first release focused on Indiana Jones.
For all those putting together an intro using a Mac, here is a quick, easy and FREE way to download HD trailers: go to Apple's trailer page and click any of the HD trailers. When Quicktime opens, go to one of the top menus and find "Show Movie Info". Highlight and copy the web address in this window. Then go to Safari, open the Downloads window (if it's not already open), and press command-v (paste). The trailer automatically starts downloading for your intro pleasure.
Hey flyNavy thanks forthat Quicktime tip, you just saved me $30!!

Got mine yesterday they look great. Awesome work!
I tried viewing them using my Oppo 970 DVD player but all the slides are about 2/3rds of screen size. Any idea why that might be? Just curious, maybe I'm just overlooking something easy. I've been down with a stomach bug since the 26th so my brain is not working very well. I'm sure I can remedy the problem when I move them to my HTPC in a movie format. I figure that would be the best place to store several variations of the intro in different lengths and orders.

BigDogues - I had the same thing happen to me on two DVD players the first time I looked at the CD of .jpg's. The text was jagged and some of the pictures looked blurry. I believe that it had something to do with the DVD players algorithm for displaying .jpgs. No problem when viewed on the computer and once I made a slide show and burned it as a DVD - the slides were as clear as they were on the computer. I see that within this forum, someone has just started a topic on creating a slide show. That may turn out to be helpful also.
flyNavy - thanks for the continued support and good review of the slides. I am adding your suggestions to my growing list of requests for the next CD.
Keep the ideas coming for the next CD. Let me know if you have miscellanous slide ideas dealing with cellphones, popcorn, no talking etc.

I put a slide show together for a Wednesday night at the Movies - my friends were thrilled!
I used only the scramble and movie mistakes for this (with Indiana Jones Theme music underscoring), then added an old drive in announcement geared for teens " Bitten by the Love Bug" (no smooching in the theater!). I topped it off with CeRT, and it was great!
I have been putting these together for a while now (I have all of Steven Good's slides) and this last one took a total of 25 - 30 minutes from start to DVD burn completed.
I have a friend who was so good at the scramble he could figure it out the second it showed up on the screen. Bummer for the rest of us ;)

If you do not get them in the next day or so, it is either that your Paypal listed email is incorrect or there is a size limitation of above 1.5 meg on your email or it is in your spam filter. I used iMovie to build the slide-show with music/transitions/effects, etc. I then followed it with a few imported trailers in HD (downloaded from Apple's site), followed by our home theater FOX theme (created by Reaper). I then went to iDVD, used the theater theme, and voila: you've got yourself one sweet looking, professional movie intro.

HDReady,
I wanted to say thanks for the awesome service and you did a fantastic job on these slides.
For anyone interested, I thought that I'd comment that the first CD HDReady sent me was somehow lost in the mail (not his fault by any means). I sent him a PM and later that same day after simply verifying that my address was correct a new CD was mailed to me. The second one got here only 3 days after he shipped it, all in all a fantastic experience. Not to mention the fact that new slides are being emailed to prior customers to correct minor errors, it's just great to see people doing the right thing for their customers like that.
Thanks again HDReady, and I'll be eagerly awaiting a second release!

I don't know if you use any recent t3ch builds of XBMC, but your updated version of the script is broken again. With some help on the forums at xboxmediacenter dot cawm (i can't post links cause i don't have enough posts) i managed to get it working again, and fixed the problem with the aspect ratio on these 16:9 slides when viewing on a 4:3 tv. Apparently i don't have enough posts to post links, but just do a search there for Kaleidascrape and it should be one of only a couple threads. Basically waht needs to be done is the first PlayList(2) needs to be change to a 1 and the PlayList(1) needs to be changed to a 0. Also, there is a slight change on line 80 or 81 mentioned on there. So for those of you using xbox media center, check that out to get it working. It's really great with these slides and everything once you get it working.
Also, MadDucks, there is a thread about a Kaleidascape skin being made and i suggested to them that they try to integrate this script into the skin. You might want to check it out, maybe you could be of some help. I know the original creator of this script Thericky is thinking of helping out too.

Surprisingly, when I told my fiancee' about these slides, she encouraged me to get them, even though we don't have a HT to speak of (just a normal room with our entertainment center). She's a trivia nut, so her plan is to use the slides AS the main entertainment, rather than before the main entertainment/movie!
How are people using these in their HT? Manually starting some sort of slideshow before the movie is ready to start?
Thanks!
HDReady102
02-06-07, 12:24 PM
bswiz,
There should certainly be enough trivia to last you over an hour. The CD contains the .jpg files separated into folders by trivia category. However, you will need to create a playable DVD. Others have written several threads on how to accomplish this. You use a program such as Nero, bring in your slides in the order that you want them displayed, assign viewing length (in seconds) and even add background music that plays while you are viewing. Then the project is burned to a DVD. You can then drop the DVD in the player and enjoy the Trivia. Hope this helps. I did not want you to think that you just drop in the CD and go. Creating the playable DVD is not difficult assuming you have the software (of which there are many packages out there) and a DVD burner.
HTReady102
Yep, I am familiar with the procedure to create a DVD, so it shouldn't be a problem. My question was really how people show the slideshow before the movie. From reading this and the Coke thread, seems like there are a couple options.
1) HTPC with program/script to run slideshow before starting any movie
2) Dedicated DVD player for pre-movie slides
3) Burn the slides and movie to a DVD together
4) Do the manual switcheroo between slides and movie DVD
The last option is the easiest, but probably the least elegant! May have to stick with it for the time being, though... Somehow I can see these new slides "forcing" me to buy some new hardware!!
Thanks again.
HDReady102
02-06-07, 03:27 PM
You nailed all the options I am aware of.
I personally use two DVD players - expensive Sony for playing the movie and a $30 cheapo for the intro. I use my Pronto remote to do the seamless switchover (wrote a series of changeover steps that occur with the push of a button). Works pretty well.

I didn't post a script. I think that was for XBMC. I'm using a plugin developed by walts81 at the Meedios(dot)com site (open source continuation project of Meedio since they sold to Yahoo). You could probably rig something up with just about any HTPC software, but it would probably require a bit of work (READ: coding).

Hello everyone,
Teknoguy - your CD will go out on Saturday 2-23-07. Usually takes three business days to travel thru the mail.
bswiz - you are correct. I hate typos. I will probably post the corrected slide on a site where all can download it instead of emailing it to everyone. Should see a posting in the next day or so where to get the corrected slide. Thanks for the sharp eyes.
MaximAVS - I sent you a PM to verify your address. Once I am sure I have the correct one, I will send you another CD. That makes two lost by the post office. As I mentioned above, next shipping date is tomorrow (Saturday). If I hear back from you today, yours will go out in this shipment.

No problem! The slides really look great, and most people would probably not even notice the typo. I've just always been really anal about spelling, for better or worse. I think it goes back to my childhood trauma of making it to the state spelling bee in elementary school and then spelling the FIRST word wrong and going back to the audience in shame!

bswiz found a spelling mistake on one of the slides.
For the next 7 days (2-27-07 till 3-5-07) you can download the corrected slides, if interested, from the site listed below. This is a zip compressed file with both slides. File size is about 1.3Meg.
The first fix is slide Reel20C "women" should have been "woman".
The second fix is Movie Mistake 5 "Star Wars: A New Hope Episode VI" should have been "Star Wars: A New Hope Episode IV".
http://www.yousendit.com/download/dkJybUpVMVhRYTk1VEE9PQ
CD's from this point on will have the corrected versions included.

Apple dot calm slash trailers
As somebody mentioned earlier in the thread, if you don't want to buy Quicktime Pro you can right click on the movie and select get info. You should be able to see a url of the video and you can download it that way.

If you're using a mac, just drop the files in iMovie.
Being a big Mac guy, I'm pretty limited on a PC. However, you'd basically want to convert it into a file that you can burn in Nero, such as AVI.
Just made another cool dvd form the slides... This is really fun... :)

Hey, I tried doing that. Their is no "get info" only properties and they are usually html links. Any other sites would be appreciated. I am looking for one preview in particular...."Nascar Imax".
Thanks!
Got the CD today... look great... now the fun begins of making a dvd. Thanks... Ill post comments after i build the dvd and show it off.

Well since I'm such a nice guy, I took a little time to find the trailer you're looking for. :) This is the highest res I could find. I downloaded it and re-uploaded it for you.

I was looking at the freeplay music faq's and came across this
6. What is a personal, non-commercial use? Generally, a personal, non-commercial use involves synchronizing music in home videos or content that you produce for friends or family (non-revenue associated or generating - either directly (payment) or indirectly (sponsored or banner ads)
I think that this would fall under the "friends" category since you're not making a profit from this project.
Also, I am interested in getting a set of the slides. What is the cost and where do I send the paypal payment?
Thanks.
