Is there anyway to view a DVD's closed caption when using a HD DVD player and a HD TV???

Either through HDMI or component cables???

Please help!

It's tough because so few of us use CC. So you may have to tell us. :)

LOL I was hoping someone would have an answer for me. It's frustrating having a top of the line TV and DVD player with awesome new technology that is, High Definition, yet it doesn't even allow Closed Captioning... I almost feel discriminated against! cause I rely on captions!

You should be able to view captioned text within the DVD itself. Just find the audio menu and you should be able to select the English captions. I hope this is what you are looking for.

I've had the same problem, with regular DVDs I've only been able to see the subtitles but never the closed captioning - the latter which I prefer. Checked the settings on my HDTV and they are set to CC1, even tried the rest. Looks to me the only option I have is the subtitiles.

The only other suggestion I can make is to see if you have the ability to turn on CC on the DVD player itself. Also if there is no CC chip on the device then you do not get access to the CC signal.

I can see a DVD's closed captioning with an old Panasonic DVD player (RV-31) which only outputs 480i. The closed captions are available on component video and composite video.

However, I cannot see a DVD's closed captioning on the Toshiba HD A1 over component video at 480p or using HDMI.

My display is a Panasonic 720p plasma (42PX60U). I assume that the Panny Plasma takes the 480i closed caption info from line 21 for display and then upconverts the 480i to 720p.

Fortunately, most DVD's have subtitles (SDH) in addition to closed captioning. Notable exceptions include Season one of Sleeper Cell and The L Word - both from Showtime.
