View Full Version : Panasonic AX100 SCREEN THREAD
I have yet to be completely satisfied with any one answer to a screen, but really am humbled and appreciative of the people who have spent so much time solving this problem. This is my AX100 Screen thread. If you have a this model, and have a screen, post a link, post a quote, it is much appreciated.
I haved studied quite a bit into theater screens lately now that I have a ax100. The first thing off the bat that I noticed is that the projector image itself is the source of ambient light. I could read the manual by it, it is so bright. This will be fixed shortly!
My first experiment: a eggshell/beige apartment white wall, and a piece of 30x30 1/4 inch mdf with 2 coats of Daniel Smith White Gesso. (Daniel Smith is an art supply company.)
This gesso is as matte as you can get. It is heavily pigmented with either zinc or titanium and produces a fantastic dispersal of light.
I am ordering some designer white laminate tomorrow, but am very tempted to get the platinum d315-60 as well. Its a nice light gray, almost silver.
I have the Carada BW paired with my ax-100 and I LOVE IT. I'm new to home theaters so I don't have a lot to compare with but the image looks great to me and viewing angle the Carada BW is much better than advertised. I get a bright uniform image from virtually any angle it seems.
fourml8r 12-06-06, 09:52 PM i have an ax100u with a 110" BW Carada. Very happy with this combination.
your situation will vary based on your room particulars (ambient light, throw distance, etc.)
buddahead 12-07-06, 07:30 AM Same here Carada 110in BW .Jaw Dropping image. All I here when folks stop by is.O my God.BUDDA
JoePerri 12-07-06, 06:51 PM I use a Da-Lite High Power pull down with mine. Awesome, bright image and NO waves!!
Pictures peoples!
At night when there is ambient light the whiter screen of the gesso performs better. (see previous picture)However....during the day it is a different story. As you can see from the pictures, the ambient light is really picked up by the whiter material.
Conclusion, for the blacks, with ambient light, the eggshell apartment wall did better.
All these screens are taken from Matrix Revolution.
chesterdad 12-09-06, 03:51 AM CSB and others, Can you tell us the size of your screen and what you like about it? Can you tell us about your room conditions, light level, seating relative to the screen, opinion of screen from off-axis viewing?
Thanks for your help
Just ordered the AX100 and am not looking forward to the screen selection process. I guess I am looking for the holy grail. I am interested in using it in a room with some window light during the day (blocked by wood blinds) for watching sports (football), and some movies.
buffexec 12-09-06, 06:44 PM Chester,
i have 14ft of Throw and i am thinking of going with a 118 BW Carada. Just ordered the AX as well and will mostly be watching HD and sports, movies.
I wonder if i can get away with 126" Carada?? or maybe that is too big for the space.
I will be sitting 13ft back.
Walt
KaushikC 12-10-06, 02:54 PM I am also in the process of getting the AX100. I was thinking of getting either the Da-lite designer control or the Draper Targa (matte white). Since my sitting distance is 13', I was planning not to go beyond 100" diagonal. Are those screen choices OK ? Also do you guys get 16:9 or 1.85:1 (widescreen format).
Thanks
Kaushik

Dang! IMAX!
I've reduced mine from 105 to around 96, still playing with the size. I'm also going 16.9 for ease of setup.
I have a 118" BW and I'm sitting 12.5 - 13 feet from the screen. I've watched in complete darkness (usually in Cinema1 mode) and with a fair amount of light (in normal mode) and the picture is great! In addition, the viewing angle on the Carada BW is better than advertised - it seems I can view it from virtually any angle.
I highly recommend Carada - the customer service is excellent and the quality and ease of assembly were equally impressive.

If we use the 16:9 screen we will still get the black border on top and bottom. What is the difficulty in setting if you get the 1.85:1 screen ? I am a novice in this area, so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
I have a HP 106" with the AX100 shelf mounted about 13'5" back from the screen. I could not be happier. AX100 is in Cinema1 mode and has been ISF calibrated.

I have the precision model. I decided I'd rather spend money on increasing screen size and getting the BW rather than the frame.

I'm still a novice as well. The AX100 Manual on page 32 shows the different aspects you will have.
My thinking, if I'm reading this right is, if I send a 720 signal via component or hdmi, I should be fine with a 16.9 with no bands and 4.3 will have the bands on the sides, but I can strech that. However, if you watch something in cinemascope you will get the gray bands on top and bottom again.

After much deliberation I have decided to wing it with a sheet of do-able. I just saw some screen shots with a AX100 on this thread and it looks like a great way to save some coin before Christmas.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9145964#post9145964
$15 for a sheet of Do-able at Home Depot
$67 for a sheet of Wilsonart Laminate
$450+ for a Carada.
Hmmm.... ;)
I'm still looking to do a comparison with the laminate, just with bigger sizes than with a sample key.
rwestley 12-12-06, 07:16 AM Has anyone tried the new Monoprice electric mat 1x1 screens.? The prices seem very low.
ok, I picked up a sheet of Do-able and have included a pic to show the difference between the eggshell matte of my walls (which I preferred over the white gesso board) with the white matte of the do-able screen. I think this is going to be pretty good...
Do-able up and running, just working on the frame.

Wouldn't the BW and 100u combo be WAY to bright? I know too much brightness is a good thing, but why wouldn't you take advantage of the extra lumens to improve black levels with a gray screen instead?
I have an AX100 with a GWII (actually Elunevision), and have the projo ceiling mounted, which I realize is less than idea for a glass beaded retro-refelective screen, but am getting reasonable results.
No questions that there is a difference in brightness/gain when I stand compared to in my viewing position, but thought I would share a few pics for fun.
I'm actually in the process of looking for a replacement screen as well, but am not in a great hurry, as the results from the setup are quite acceptable for now. I'm similar to a few of you, with the projector mounted approx 13' from the screen.
The screen shots I took are far from great, and where handheld, which makes for crappy results....I will use a tripod next time. I just wanted to give people an idea, as many people bash the GWII with a ceiling mount, and while I agree, it's not the "best", it's certainly pretty darn good with a bright projo like this, not total crap, as some would imply.
The screen shots are taken from eye level when sitting on the couch.....if I stood up, they would be a little brighter. Projo in Eco mode with Cinema 1.

Hi Amisam:
Thanks for clearing my doubt. Since I do not have a dedicated room for home theater, I will be getting an electric screen. How imprtant is tensioned electric screen compared to non-tensioned ? Is tensioned screen worth the extra money ?
Thanks

The tensioned screens typically allow for better performance with respect to waves, and more importantly, allows for higher quality screen materials, sometimes reserved for fixed frame screes, to be used in a pull down application.
As far as being worth the money, it all depends on your budget and your screen choices. Typically a powered & tensioned screen is near the top of the price range.

FANTASTIC SETUP! Thanks for sharing the pics, they actually are really good! I like your low entertainment area and am looking to design something like that myself.
jberylec 12-16-06, 09:06 AM I didn't see anyone answer the question that was asked about aspect ratio, so I'll chime in :)
Projectors use overscan* just like most TVs, so 1.85 actually fills a 16:9 screen perfectly. You will not see those grey aspect fill bars.
However, you will see them when watching wider scopes like 2.35
*Overscan zooms in the image a tad bit to get rid of any noisy/ugly edges. The result is perfectly clean edges all the way around, no distortion :)

Thanks CHIA. I was leaning towards Da-lite designer contour with IR remote which is ~ $800, but I am getting a good deal on dalite tensioned cosmopoliton for $1700, with either cinema vision or high contrast cinema vision at no additional cost. Do you think I should bite the bullet and go for the tensioned screen, to be happier in the long run :-)
Here is my final screen. So those who like a good diy now and then, this is great!
Cost:
1 sheet Do-able avail at Home Depot $15
4 1x2x8 pine $6.50
2 rolls double sided tape $8.00
1 jar rubber cement $1.50
90 inches of Madonna Black Velvet $24.00
Total Cost $55
The first picture shows the frame and screen. Its important to note that I have every light on in the house and it is daytime. :)

If it's within your budget, than you probably will be happier in the long run....the right screen is pretty important, and something I wish I did a bit more reasearch on before buying...oh well, never too late!

Thanks!!!! Appreciate the compliment, and I really like the look as well. Only a few weeks ago, those cubes were stacked on top of one another, about 5.5 feet high. They had been like that for about 4 years.
I then decided to keep things lower, and screwed casters on the bottom of them, and put them side by side. They look pretty clean. They are actually just these inexpensive side table/nightstands from Ikea called CORRAS, and come with cheap plastic casters, and one shelf. They happen to fit many AV components and possibly a subwoofer perfectly.
I must say, my previous Onkyo recever did not fit....it was just a touch to wide...I could fir the body in, but the face plate or shroud would not make it.....maybe they have changed since then.
Anyway, in case people were interested, they are about $50 each (in Canada) and only $29 each in the US ( we get RIPPED OFF!!). They come in a few colours, and can go side by side, or stacked. The casters were also from Ikea....about $10CAD for 4 relatively large ones....great deal.

Just ordered a Da-Lite Model C 133" High Power! Gonna arrive in 1 week. Nice guy at PJ People, but he tried to talk me out of that size saying "it's too big".
TOO BIG?!?! No way. Thanks but put the friggin order in...Already saw it shot on my wall and I absolutely wanted to cry tears of happiness...Stayed with my gut instinct (and what I saw with my own eyes)...
Gonna pay that off and then put the order in for the AX100. Shooting for everything by Superbowl. Almost there, almost there...

CHIA thank you a million. AFter dealing with the monkeys at Home Depot I have decided to head over, right now to Ikea and pick up 3 of these babies in black. I was originally going to make a tri-flexi rack. No big deal but they cut the boards wrong. Sometimes DIY is for the birds.

On an "on topic" note....anyone have any more experiences with screens and this projector lately? I'm in the process o trying a couple new samples, and am close to pulling the trigger on one....always nice to hear other oppinions though.
samhain1 01-06-07, 04:14 PM Would someone be kind enough to let me know how I can calculate the drop of a ceiling mount for this projector. I would like the shortest possible without compromising the image.
The screen is a 72" wide screen (6ft), 41" high and 83" diagonal. The bottom of the screen will be mounted 26" above normal floor height. The distance from floor to ceiling is 92".
The projector will be mounted between 9-10ft away from the screen.
Any help would be gratefully received.
Thanks

Yeah, BIG IS BETTER. should be no problem with this projector / fabric combination. In fact, I think I'm going to try the 159"!
What about Goo Systems Screens? I haven't seen many discussions about them.
Also what about Stewart Filmscreen Studiotek 130 screens?
Ausdaddy 01-17-07, 02:30 PM There has been many threads on Goo systems in the DIY screen section. Do a search there. Some of the most popular screens right now are Carada Brilliant White and Da-Lite High Power.
brianlvi3 01-19-07, 03:45 PM I have the Panny AX100 paired with a Stewart electric 82 inch ST130 and just love the pic.
LIZALOO 01-28-07, 09:12 PM Am planning to purchase the AX100 and am seriously considering pairing it with the Carada Precision screen (106" - seated at 12'). It is a dedicated HT, light controlled environment...here's the million $ question: Classic White/Bright White/Grey?
If you read any literature it states the classic is good for light controlled rooms; bright white good for dimmer projectors; grey for lower contrast ratios. Am leaning towards the classic white - BUT???
Would appreciate any comments on how to decide? My brother, who works for Tweeter install department, thinks I should go with grey, so as to punch the blacks but I can't decide?
Thanks in advance for any input.
erashby 01-29-07, 02:08 AM Disclaimer: I'm just 1 month into the home theater experience with the Panosonic 100AX.
I have tried 106" and 120" Graywolf II screens. I think they are made by Optoma, not sure. But they are really the "silver screen. They are gray except when viewed at an angle close to the angle the light is shot at to the screen; then they are quite reflective and bright. (1.8 gain, high contrast) Comparing the grey scrren to the beige wall the contrast was much better, but the brightness seemed the same. The highly reflective screen is great.
I have now cieling mounted the projector at 7.5ft high 13 feet back. Previously, it was on my 4.5 ft high weight rack. I am viewing from 13 feet.
I had read, in the manual or somewhere that the best brightness occurs when the viewer and projector are not at too great of an angle. So, in a Home Theater setuyp it would be best to have the projector at the same height as your head. This is also what I read works best with this specific screen. Having compared the two, the loss of brightness is minimal. Contrast is great and viewing with the lights on is still good, not great but good.
As far as screen size at a viewing distance of 13 feet, I think the 120" diagonal is just right. 106" was OK. 92" was too small.
bqmeister 01-29-07, 10:59 AM I have the panny with the graywolf 106" (for a few more days). Just ordered the 120" graywolf.
I've been very happy with the 106" except it wasn't as big as I wanted. This new combo should be great.
Yeah, it is brighter the closer you are to the projector height, but the drop off is minimal. I have this table mounted. Considering getting a higher table to achieve better brightness, but not really a big deal (yet - maybe when the bulb dims I may change my mind).
parksar 01-29-07, 01:52 PM I had a 92"GreyWolf II that I just returned to Costco and bought the 106 Da-Lite Model C Matte White from Projector People. I'm sitting about 14 ft and found the 92 to be too small (never thought I'd say that). Love the Da-lite - it is MUCH more substantial (hanging it was much trickier than the GWII) and the picture and contrast seem better than on the GW II. FYI, my ax100 is celing mounted.
Love the combination and very happy. The 106 ended up being only $50 more than the 92.

Here's what sold me. One of the Carada folks has the AX100 in his home paired with a BW screen. I went with the BW 118" Precision and couldn't be happier. I'm happy with the blacks and the colors. It's only 1.4 gain, so it's not as bright as some of the higher gain screens. As time goes on and the bulb dims, the BW will help mitigate some of the lost brightnes. No complaints here.

Completely agree. I didn't want the lights off during the Superbowl Party. I can turn the lights on with the AX on Normal and it looks excellent.

Soybean 01-29-07, 10:22 PM I asked the rep that very question, and he said manufacturing is typically taking 3 days right now. I figure they'll ship out on Thursday, and they're in Alabama and I'm in NJ. I'll probably get it early next week (after the weekend, unfortunately).

With my setup (110" BW) i can keep some lights on (just not those that reflect off the screen) and it still looks decent.
Soybean 02-04-07, 12:59 AM I put my order in on Jan. 29, it shipped Jan. 30, and arrived Feb. 1. Rex was very helpful in choosing screen material. I went with the Criterion frame since I figured I'd be getting years of use out of it, and thus may as well get that nice beveled edge.
The Brilliant White isn't too bright for the AX100 at all. In total darkness it looks beautiful in Cinema 1 mode. Even Vivid Cinema wasn't too overwhelming for me when watching a darker film, like Star Trek: First Contact. As the bulb dims, I'll be glad I have the brighter screen.
I'm new to projectors and whatnot, so I'm not really sure how else to describe my satisfaction with the screen. I guess one thing I can note is that despite being reflective, there's very little "shimmer" in the screen, so you won't be distracted by that.
Here a couple pictures of my 100" Criterion-framed Brilliant White:

i am planning on purchasing the following tonight for my first HT setup. i thought it might be wise to ask the "experts" for their take on my setup before i pull the trigger.
panasonic PT-AX100
elite tab tension 120" screen in matte white 16:9
oppo dv-981hd dvd player
the room can be totally light controlled (external light) but has a white ceiling and brown walls. it measures 17x21' and the pj will be mounted around 19' from the screen. seating will be around 15-17 feet. the ceiling height is 8.5'.
after all of your reviews i can't wait to try this projector! does this setup look good? would you recommend a 106" screen instead of the 120" for my room size? it must be retractable/electric.
thanks in advance!
LIZALOO 02-04-07, 10:29 PM For those of you with the carada brilliant white (and there were several who love the panny 100 paired with this screen) how do your blacks measure up? Have read some not so great "pro" reviews about the carada screen brightness? Yet every customer review I have read has been fantastic. Those with the BW screens, do you have a significant amount of ambient light? I know their service department is phenomenal, read rave reviews and the wall mount application is fairly easy compared to other screen models but to be honest, customer service won't be sitting in my theater with me! (Not to diminish it's importance!) Comments?

Great question, I have a 118" BW and my blacks looks great. I used AVIA to configure it and turned OFF the dynamic iris. I think the AX100 blacks are just fine. I have complete light control, but a watched a good portion of the super bowl with my lights on (7 wall sconces) and the picture was very good (on normal). I wouldn't hesitate to get the BW. It's bright, but not blazing bright. Gives it just the right punch in my opinion.

Here you go Chia, sorry, I haven't been around since I have been completely loving having a home theater! I'm so glad I didn't have to go flexi-rack, aka the trailer of component organizing! The dimensions, as you can see are perfect for my components. It makes me wonder if these were originally designed for home theater!?!
Once again, thanks!
Back to the screen. For those who have read from the beginning of this thread, I purchased a $15 dollar sheet of Home Depot Do-able. (Search the do-able thread if you want to.)
It's white. It's bright white. I decided to not monkey around with gray/silver etc. Seeing how I am on eco-mode anyway, the brighter the better, right? The main issue then is light contol.
Here is my progression of light control with a bright white screen then. The first picture is of course, no screen, no light control either.
The second is with velvet curtains and the screen up. The picture is taken during the middle of the afternoon. Not bad, but not great either!
continued....
Here is the solution. Black-out cloth. I know this is recommended all over this board, but I wanted to post it here because of the brightness of the Panny AX100. It would be a shame if someone was afraid that they couldn't get the best of both worlds with this projector. That being:
1. using eco-mode to maximize bulb-life
2. using a bright white screen to maximize lumen output in eco-mode!
It's real simple. If you have light leakage like the previous posted picture, then you are going to want to put your blackout cloth as close to the light leak as possible. If I put mine on my curtains themselves, the problem would exist exactly the same. So how to mount this?
Velcro, sticky velcro. Can be removed easily when you want sunlight. But who wants that? Prrrrecious.... :) Also, if you are on the cheap, thumbtacks work fantastic!
I cut my blackout cloth to be one inch over the dimensions of the window and cut a few piece of velcro to stick it to the wall.
My wife's main complaint is that it's always 9PM in our living room! I always remind her that she can take the blackout cloth off easily...hmmm...somehow we end up watching HD and taking down the blackout cloth is something that hasn't happened yet. And I'm blocking 5 windows! :) Maybe this spring?
Conclusion, Go bright white!
Final results as pictured and youtubed:

Ever thought of putting up a blackout roller shade? Wife may be able to pull them up/down more readily than removing the tacks..and complain less! It's also pretty inconspicuous. I use them often in client's homes (especially in children's rooms where taking naps during day is common). You can get them fairly inexpensively at JCPenney, custom sized to your window sizes.
bqmeister 02-06-07, 03:17 PM My wife would KILL me if it was always dark in the family/living room.
I knew immediately that I needed a dedicated space or no projector for me.
I could get by with honeycomb black out shades, but they're too expensive to put on many large windows.

I didn't know these existed but will be looking into them in the future, thanks Lizaloo!
btw there are no tacks, just velcro except for one little furl that refused to hang flat.
LIZALOO 02-11-07, 05:44 PM Just put my order in today to purchase the panny 100, can't wait for it to arrive!
