View Full Version : SVS 25-31 is a BEAST

Well SVS shipped me a 25-31 and let me just say the thing is a hideous looking beast! For my application it was just WAY too big... I pictured the unit being much smaller - I was completely wrong. The thing looks like an oil barrel. Now no disrespect because upon hooking it up my apartment complex felt like it was going to shake from the very foundation the 6 story building was planted to. The thing is so strong pictures throughout my 800 sq foot pad magically left their homes and fell to the floor. The bass is incredible - crystal clear and strong... your chest feels like it's going to cave in from the pressure! So this is going back for a WAF approved SB-12-Plus in piano black
finish.
If I had a dedicated HTC room 500+ SQ ft I would consider this unit... otherwise stick witha PB10...
BTW - SVS customer service is easily the best online buying experience I have ever had - these guys made the return so easy I didn't even have to blink an eye on the exchange.

Hah. :) Well, the easiest way to get high-performance bass for a reasonable price is by allowing lots of cabinet space/efficiency in the design...as you noticed from its performance. Still, a big tube ain't everyone's cup o' tea. :)

I think the big tubes look sweet. Put that in a corner and people are like WOW ....then they hear it and their JAWS hit the floor.
I'm Sooooooooooooooooooooooooo happy I'm only 27 with no WAF yet!!!!

That picture is priceless....
My wife let me have dual 20-39s in our family/theater room. Then she let me have dual PB12 +/2s.
She is so use to living with me that when the new JL arrived she commented that it looked "funny" because it was so small. ;)

You thinking that your SVS is big is making many DIYers laugh. That is small!
Don't take that as an insult, just the truth.
And remember, when you want to add a second one, just start by showing your wife a picture of SteveCallas's monster. She will quickly agree to the baby SVS.

Here is a picture I took a couple of years ago in my livingroom. PB12plus, VTF-3MK1, and STF-2.

try laying your 25-31 on its side, and take off the base plate.
it becomes "smaller" that way.
Relatively speaking.
I have a 20-39 and it actually hides underneath a coffee table that I have in the corner of my room. It fits well and all my guests think I must have one of those tiny little subs that they can't find.

LOL, I was thinking more along the lines of putting a 13" TV on top of the SVS (in between the two center channels, of course).
LOL, I was thinking more along the lines of putting a 13" TV on top of the SVS (in between the two center channels, of course). That would be funny, too. I noticed the DVDs in the rack, but no TV. So how about a 13" B&W with aluminum foil wrapped rabbit ears.
Ooops. Looks like the white bar under the top Center is a pull-down screen.

Yes the SVS is huge to those who upgrade from tiny subs,I wonder how it all sounds.I have two rooms even fuller of audio goodies! Fun to see I am not alone :p

I went from a Velo box to a 25-31 PC Plus. My wife love the new sub for both performance and appearance. The material used on the exterior of the sub is beautiful IMO and my wifes.

I don't agree...didn't you have plenty of info beforehand to not make such a mistake. Your entitled to your opinion, but sheeze! I like both styles myself and know they each have their pro's and con's. Maybe a block of three would have looked better estedicts wise? :D

This may sound weird, but I like the looks of these beautiful SS-Ultras better than my f113s. Sooooo coool.
Maybe I can talk Ron into building me a couple of those with the new Ultra woofers. My speakers are dark cherry though. Much darker than Brazilian cherry (more reddish) than the rest of the room the HT is in.
Man 2 of those in Cherry finish, how would they look?

There has been some hints that SVS may bring back the SS cylinders and the B4. Probably too busy now to do much about these.

Do you mean a B4 Ultra-13?
For years I have been asking SVS about an Ultra version of the B4+. The unique push-pull design is one of it's kind. Almost any person who owned the B4+ had only comments that claimed out-of-the-world performance. I think because of some difficulty in cabinet making, they discontinued it. I hope SVS partners with AV123 to get this going. av123 in the past have been helpful to companies like HSU and SVS for cabinets. With Mark Seaton, and BMF-1, this brings us some very exciting products :D. Can't wait.

I think they are DIY
Tom has reiterated that if/when the B4 is re-released, it will still be a + as the Ultra driver x4 would make it too heavy. The SS tubes were Ultras, I believe.

Not as heavy as a Gotham at 400lbs :D
It would depend on if the new U13 would have a much heavier amp (though an outboard amp would be the better way) and would force thicker sides, more bracing and an even larger enclosure. 400 lbs might then seem light. Making a 400 lb sub would be very hard on an ID only company because shipping costs would be pretty high.
I would guess a new U13/2 would best a B4/+ in every way. If that turns out to be the case, I don't hold out much promise of a new B4/+ being released. But a B4/U13 would be an interesting beast. With the impending release of the Gotham, the Velo 1812, and what TC seems to be working on, not to mention Danley's cargo container behemoth, I don't think we are going to need another monster, single unit sub.

SVS looks huge next to some $99 subs. Ssabripo should post his subs here...with SVS or HSU TN just beside...too damn funny.

I received my SVS 20-39PCi yesterday. It was b-stock, but the thing looks like new. If I didn't know any better, I would've thought they sent me a brand new sub. The thing is huge.
I haven't done anything extreme with it, but I love it already. I'm coming from a Yamaha YST-SW305 sub and when the Yamaha would wake up out of standy, it would still take the thing several seconds before it started playing any sound. That was very annoying. If an explosion occured, the explosion would already be over by the time the Yamaha was ready to play. It looks like this SVS sub starts up immediately when it comes out of standby, and I LOVE that considering what I'm upgrading from.
Congrats on your purchase.

It probably is new. It may just have an insignificant scratch on it or something. My 25-31 plus looks perfect. I cannot find anything at all cosmetic wrong with it. It is a beautiful, black, mini water heater:D I just need to get the room finished and plug it in!

Usually the b-stock has a glue mark or something cosmetic. SVS is not going to tell you something that is electronically defective because then you'd just end up returning it and going through more hassle.
The PB-12NSD I bought was B-stock....excess glue on the back right portion of the box....

Actually, most of their B-stock items are simply customer returns. As a rule, they are like new, having only been used for a few weeks or less before being returned because the customer decided he wanted something else.
If there is a cosmetic defect, it is described on the B-stock page, usually accompanied by a photograph.

will do i am sure it will be great, i had planned on this sub first but found a deal on the B&W and took a chance- big mistake. b&w is gone and ready for my svs. if you call the guys there they will make you feel like a king. ron called me and we talked for a long time BS-ing and such, he explained the pros and cons to each sub and i was almost going to get the pb12 nsd which in silver is on sale but then decided on my initial want --the 25-31. he did not pressure me into any decision at all. i chose the more expensive sub. anyhow the service alone to me is a huge thing and we got along great and it made me feel really good about my order. he'll be in the LA area fairly soon and wants to swing by my work and check out our production company here. i know the sub will shake the earth but, i want it more for the clean tight sound it is supposed to have.
