View Full Version : The Sopranos Season 6
ckenisell 12-06-06, 01:58 PM Probably has already been talked about somewhere here, but I couldn't find it and all I can remember is hearing speculation that The Sopranos was definitely going to be on HD-DVD, but nobody was sure if it would ever come to Blu-Ray (even though HBO is under the Warner umbrella).
Well, here it is (http://www.dvdempire.com/Exec/v4_item.asp?userid=99365119970104&item_id=1262369&searchID=).
soremekun 12-06-06, 02:30 PM It is prob 4 discs to match the HD DVD version. I wonder how many discs it would require if VC1 was used...
ckenisell 12-06-06, 02:42 PM It is 4 discs from DVDempire's description.
ckenisell 12-06-06, 04:20 PM This one will be interesting to see. I want to know how much better the PQ will be on Blu-Ray than on HBO-HD.
Also, how long do you think it will be before we get the other five seasons?
Hmm. It's $12 more expensive then the HD-DVD version. I wonder why?
Dave Mack 12-06-06, 06:07 PM isnt this s6 part 1...?
please, not the season splitting crap again :(
besides, it clearly says part one in the link

It is all of the aired episodes up to now, so it is a little difficult to release the complete season at this point. ;)
Dave Mack 12-06-06, 08:28 PM Yep, part one, (I didn't check b4) This splitting the season sh*t on sets (like BSG, Ghost Hunters...) drives me crazy. Is the stupidest progression in software IMHO....

It's also profitable which is why the studios do it. Sucks being a fanboy/girl, isn't it? :(
Dave Mack 12-06-06, 09:56 PM Yep, that's why they do it... More $$$
WriteSimple 12-06-06, 10:30 PM If the video bitrate is 16Mbps and audio is DTS 1.5Mbps, 2 BD50s can be used.

ckenisell 12-06-06, 11:27 PM Are you saying that it should be 2 discs? It clearly states on DVDEmpire's site that it is a 4 disc set.

Gotcha!
Yeah its coming out on Blu Ray.
I have the regular DVD.
Is it worth rebuying?
When does this come out? I hate the PART 1 crap.. why!??!!?! we know why but stilll damn bastards....
HD DVD version is soon right?
ckenisell 12-08-06, 10:17 AM Well, you also need to consider that Part 1 is 10 full episodes. It's not like they split a 13 episode season into 7 episodes and 6 episodes later. Of course, the storyline ended as though it's the middle of a season. I guess that's why they're still calling the next part Season 6.
I think the HD DVDversion comes out on the 19th...
According to DVD Empire, the Blu-ray release features a PCM track while the HD DVD version does not. Can anyone confirm?Yup, uncompressed PCM confirmed. In fact, 5.1 PCM is all that's offered for English. The other audio track is Spanish DD 2.0. See here: http://www.dvdempire.com/Exec/v4_item.asp?userid=99365144821537&item_id=1262369&tab=5&back=1&anchor=1#topoftabs
Uh, the link is to an actual picture of the back cover of the box. If you look in the lower left corner, you'll see the Audio Specs for this title, and PCM is clearly listed.
Is that not enough confirmation?
ckenisell 12-20-06, 03:10 PM I saw it at Best Buy moments ago. The Blu-Ray version does show uncompressed 5.1 PCM on the box. I didn't, however, look at the HD-DVD version specs.
ckenisell 01-04-07, 06:29 PM So I picked up this one on amazon and the picture quality is awesome! The best I've ever seen The Sopranos. I'm ready for seasons 1-5 now.
Two things:
I don't have an HDMI receiver, so I cannot take advantage of the uncompressed 5.1 track. The PS3 downscales the audio to stereo PCM out via the digital optical output. So, I have to listen to it in stereo for now. :(
I really don't like the clear plastic packaging that holds the discs. This is nothing more than the same 4-disc holder that is used to hold the four DVD set. It even says "DVD" in the plastic. Pretty lame. Also, I think the hard coating on Blu-Ray's adds a couple of mils to the disc so the hole in the center is a tiny bit smaller. This makes it really difficult to remove the disc from the plastic holder. I have to nearly break the disc to remove it. I do like the metallic blue and I do like the magnetic door on the front of the box.
Anybody else's thoughts on this box set?

Thanks for the insight.... I only have seen the HD DVD version in stores for some reason.... it looks spiffy, I havent obviously opened it yet, I plan on getting the Blu-ray version ... I think, as long as one format doesnt look better than the other for PQ on this release. The sound.... well.... its probably front-heavy anyway... so im not too worried about that if the HD DVD version is better looking, which I havent heard about at all.
ckenisell 01-04-07, 07:14 PM Picture quality should be the same since WB/HBO uses the same encodes for both formats.
Kipp Jones 01-23-07, 12:30 PM Just received these disks yesterday. PQ is absolutely outstanding, some of the best I have seen so far. I own both BR and HD-DVD. I am format neutral.
ckenisell 01-23-07, 01:35 PM Here's hoping seasons 1 through 5 will look just as nice on Blu-Ray.
