There are many other lists, but they are arranged alphabetically, or by format and/or studios. Here I intend to make a list by release date, so that anyone can use it to see what is available at any given moment. I'll update it as more information is disclosed.

To qualify, a title must have been announced by the studio (with price and availability date), or be available for preorder (not availability notification or obvious placeholder) at two different North American sites.

In 2007, Home Media Magazine has begun publishing Blu-ray vs HD DVD sales information. To access the magazine, scroll down the page. On the left you'll see a box entitled "This Week's Digital Edition", and underneath the text "Read It Now! Click Here". Click that.

The information consists of relative percentages between BD and HD DVD, both year-to-date and "since inception", as well as the weekly top 5 for BD and HD DVD, and their relative sales within each format.

gljvd and Petra, note that this calendar was not created to promote a format or to fuel any kind of controversy; rather, to include as much substantial information on hidef titles as possible, especially information on audio and video codecs used, and disc size.

After checking back on the sources (especially themanroom (http://dvd.themanroom.com/dvd-newsview.php?id=398)), I see it hasn't been actually confirmed by the studio. That's why I hadn't included it (or Ladder 49 and Reign of Fire, for that matter). We'll know soon enough.

It's frustrating how HD-DVD studios are notorious for announcing titles so close to when they release them. I'm hoping this will change in the new year, but looking at those charts, it doesn't seem to be.

What about Weinstein releases? Clerks II is coming to HD DVD in January.

I have been averaging between a couple sites during this year but the logistics proved impossible. It took ages for them both to post a review. It won't work.

I respect highdefdigest's reviews a lot. Additionally, their reviews usually come soon after release date.

Averaging multiple sites takes a lot of time, but otherwise the number is misleading, and it might be best to not list it at all. Some examples:

Grubert: I know the colour coding is good for an easy look. But a few times I have used your lists to compare titles on BD vs HD DVD. Do you think you could add a column at the end B/H it would make such a task much easier.

I use the AVS white skin which i think is easier on the eyes and that's why I like the Blue better.

when taking the information out of the forum (cut & paste) the lighter blue is much easier to differentiate between the other colors. Green is hard enough as it is.

On a personal note, Grubert, if you change the colors it will make it necessary to change the way I pull at the information from the calenders for the HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray Uniqueness Charts (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=741582) and I should change their colors to match, but I like their colors the way they are.

Rolling with the punches, I just wait and see what happens.

Paramount announced it along with Black Rain last November (http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Disc_Announcements/Paramount/Paramount_Adds_Black_Rain,_Failure_to_Launch_to_2007_Lineup/340), and they never announced a delay.

However, considering amazon, dvdpacific and dvdempire say it doesn't have a release date, I'll strike it from the list.

I'm not so sure on DVE: amazon still shows it as a 02/27 release, dvdempire has it for 03/27, and dvdpacific lists is as "date unknown" altogether.

Someone at Warner must have decided which to show prominently and which to show the outline behind. I would have thought that if they were trying to show neutrality, they would have show the boxes side by side so all are in plain view.

On another note, I also wouldn't mind seeing your list not being limited to North American releases only e.g. include region-free releases such as the SC releases of Basic Instinct, Total Recall and Rambo, Spanish Underworld Evolution and Japanese Equilibrium, Brothers Grimm etc.

Monty Pythons Meaning of Life on HDDVD.... I see that Universal is the studio behind it. Columbia Tristar seems to distribute The Holy Grail which is my favorite.

Because Failure to Launch is a Paramount title, and Borat is a Fox title.

Grubert, would it be possible to add some sort of a flag for each release to indicate New or Catalog title? If it's too big a hassle and/or you don't think it's necessary, that's totally fine, but I for one would like to see it.

These days, any Blu-ray news from Fox is good news, but when you start seeing release dates for some of the titles Fox delayed many months ago, you're heart starts to beat just a little bit faster. New releases for September 26th: 'Day After Tomorrow', 'Independence Day', and 'Platoon'. New releases for October 24th: 'Predator', 'Commando', 'Robocop', 'Arthur and the Invisibles', 'The Hills Have Eyes', 'Ice Age', and 'Tristan & Isolde'.

One title I don't see mentioned is The Fifth Element Remastered. Amazon has it scheduled to come out on July 17.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Jack Nicholson classic 'A Few Good Men' to Blu-ray on September 18th. Featuring one of the most quoted movie lines ever, this title has proven a huge seller on DVD, and will surely be a favorite on Blu-ray. Video will be presented in 1080p and accompanied by a PCM soundtrack.


Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson and Demi Moore star in Rob Reiner's unanimously acclaimed drama about the dangerous difference between following orders and following one's conscience. Cruise stars as a brash Navy lawyer who's teamed with a gung-ho litigator (Moore) in a politically explosive murder case. Charged with defending two Marines accused of killing a fellow soldier, they are confronted with complex issues of loyalty and honor, including its most sacred code and its most formidable warrior (Nicholson). Superbly directed with a trio of powerhouse performances and an outstanding supporting cast including Kevin Pollak, Kiefer Sutherland and Kevin Bacon.

Dimension Films is a unit of the Weinstein Company (formerly with Disney). All Dimension movies released prior to Oct. 05 are Disney's. All of them after that beyond to Weinstein -- as does the name "Dimension Films".

As of March 2006, Weinstein is using MGM to distribute Dimension Films theatrically. But they continue to own the films and distribute them for home video.

Pixar’s Cars Announced for November

HollywoodinHiDef.com is reporting that Buena Vista Home Entertainment will release Pixar's 'Cars' for Blu-ray on November 6th. This title was delayed from June as director John Lasseter wanted to be very hands on with this release (and at that time he was busy completing Ratatouille). Now it appears that the delay will be worth it with John supervising everything from the AVC encoding to the special "Car Finder" BD-J extra.

"Car Finder" will challenge users to find more than 200 different cars featured in the film. Users can also race against the clock to find different cars in a freeze frame from the movie. And of course, details of each make and model will be accessible on the disc. The Blu-ray release will also feature all the extras from last years DVD release

Late Ingmar Bergmans "The Seventh Seal" is due to be released (Blu-ray) by Tartan Video on September 23. According to Amazon UK this disc is "all regions".

In Poland.

Releases outside of North America are not considered. For example, Evan Almighty appears in red although it is on Blu-ray in Europe.

This has been my policy for 1½ years now.

Most Blu-ray titles have been s#%t, especially the selection of the 5 free ones. It also pisses me off that many titles offered are to be found in $7.99 regular DVD bargain bins. I did buy the PS3 but had a hard time picking among the dreck that was offered for the promotion.

Guys this is not a general posting thread. Its for posting NEW info only. The only reason the last attachment was added is that I will be maintaining the list in '08.
Also only titles with official dates from the studio's make the list.

Releases for Q1-Q3:

Still no news of Lord of the Rings ?

For me that's when not having an HD player will seriously start itching. Until then, I can wait...

In Poland.

Releases outside of North America are not considered.


Well, since HD-DVD is not region coded, it's technically also available in NA. I'm sure there's a polish online store somewhere that can ship it overthere...

For example, Evan Almighty appears in red although it is on Blu-ray in Europe.

But Europe region coded I assume, so technically not available to NA BD player owners...
