View Full Version : Looking for a digital HD recorder
any suggestions?
want to record high defn programming coming in unencrypted over cable. Not interested in the Tivo Series 3, as I do not watch my HD tv frequently, and will only be recording shows occasionally. Not interested in upgrading my cable package to get their hd dvr, because I already receive HD programming with my basic package. Not that interested in a DVHS recorder with tapes. Would prefer a recorder with HDMI output.
mossie,
There are apparently 2 devices out there that fit the bill. The only problem is that both have been discontinued for a while. I've been looking to one at a reasonable price, but the search has been unsuccessful.
Anyway, the devices that you're looking for are the LG LST-3410A and the Sony HDD-250 or HDD-500.
I'm not sure if they have HDMI connections as they are about 2 to 3 years old. The Sony can accept Cable Card.

timecop 12-12-06, 10:53 PM Thats a bitstream recorder without any decoder.

The Sony units have an HDMI output.

I have the LG LST3410A and it doesn't have HDMI, only DVI with HDCP which should still function if your TV/monitor/projector has HDMI. There are 2 Firewire ports for either archiving to DVHS or transferring DV movies to the hard drive but no daisy chaining of units allowed. The machine will let you know about it. Analog wise there are the usual component, S-video and composite outs. There's a whole official thread here on the forum on page 1 if you're interested.
ScottEslick 01-01-07, 11:57 AM Have you looked at any of these FusionHD products? I don't have 5 posts to post the url but a simple Google will get you there.
I don't have any experience with theses products but they look interesting.

Mitsubishi HD-6000.
It has HDMI in and out, component, firewire, cablecard, HD tuner, 120GB HD.
A few dealers are closing them out, see Walts TV.

Good question, I haven't been able to find an online manual or any user forums. Who wants to try one out? :)
HDTVFanAtic 01-02-07, 12:38 PM I got the answer. It cannot. Only records OTA and Cable - manual does not show a method or refer to recording via firewire.

Do you have a link to a manual?
So what are the inputs for? Maybe just for switching?

Well, I had a nice response until I hit submit and the website went down :(
They emailed me the manual this morning.
The cover says Receiver/Controller which is about as good of a description as one can put on it. Think of it as the front end of HDTV Screen - doing everything except displaying the picture.
Of course, its tied in closely with their NetCommand Controls.

The spec sheet shows you can record to or from firewire.

Can you post where you requested the manual from? I too am curious about the firewire out option, possibly as a way to record to an external firewire drive. The 120GB harddrive is just too small for use as an HD recorder.
timecop 01-03-07, 12:03 PM The only 'external firewire drive' that you will be recording to would be one of the AVHDD devices such as symbio, indigita whatever, RCA DVR2160 etc, and NOT to a external PC-use 1394 hdd.

I tried to post the manual here but its over the 5Meg limit for pdfs.
Timecop is correct - you cannot just plug in a firewire HD and expect it to work.
Now, you could buy a service manual for $15 online and possibily see if you could replace the internal hard drive - but obviously, thats a gamble as well.
Thanks for the help. I know the current Poaroid DVD recorder can be modified to use external IDE hard drives, so I was hoping something similar could be done to this one to increase the storage. I guess I'll have to keep looking.

HDTVFanAtic 01-11-07, 09:10 PM try emailing mitsubishi customer service off their website and they will send you the pdf.
network23 02-10-07, 12:06 AM we bought one of these HD-6000's and so far I can't get it to record to anything, from anything. Now I'm a real noob on DVR and I just got it hooked up tonight. but so far, I've justed tried to record from OTA and I hit the record botton and it does nothing. Checked the manual and it's zero help.
I too went with it because I was thinking a hard drive is a hard drive, so maybe I can replace it. But so far, I can't get it to record anything.
If anyone has any tips on setting up and using this thing, I'd be happy to hear your thoughts!
Thanks.
