View Full Version : Playstion 3 and Incompatible Blu-Ray titles
Thistledown 12-12-06, 07:20 PM Is anyone aware of blu-ray incompatibilities with the new playstation 3? I have Talladega Nights, Underworld: Evolution, and The Fifth Element. The latter two I just picked up.
Talladega and Underworld work flawlessly and look fantastic. When I try to load up The Fifth Element, the disc takes about a minute before the disc icon pops up (instead of 4-5 seconds). Then when I run the disc, it bounces we back after about 30 seconds and gives me an error.

I called Sony and they said The Fifth Element is incompatible with the PS3. I'm assuming this is a firmware problem and due to the fact that The Fifth Element was one of the first Blu-Ray discs. It's just disheartening to think that there could be more compatibility problems in the future.
Another PS3 blunder. Sony REALLY dropped the ball on this console. How can you have compatibility issues with your console when you are the primary driver of the technology. I am taking my PS3 back to CC tomorrow and buying a HD-DVD drive for my 360.
Did Sony say what other titles are incompatible?
Maybe because Fifth Element looks so bad Sony disabled the ability to play this movie in the PS3.

I wouldn't buy the HD DVD drive yet. Wait until after CES 2007 to see the future of both formats.

:D
Thistledown 12-12-06, 07:32 PM Sony did not say what other titles were incompatible, but I didn't press them for it either.
Thistledown 12-12-06, 07:34 PM I should mention that Sony did say it may be fixed in an upcoming firmware update.
isaidme 12-12-06, 07:37 PM Looks like we are getting another flood of Trolls in here again. I have had no issues playing Blu-Rays on my PS3, Have you tried another copy of the same movie before you blame PS3 who put a better product out with a built in HD drive from day one instead of you having to rig up an add on, who aready released three firmware updates, and replaced bad units with brand new ones from day one. Keep living a lie!
And who are you referring to as a Troll? People who actually own the PS3 and speak out against it?
necrolop 12-12-06, 07:52 PM Fifth Element works perfectly on my PS3
MidnightWatcher 12-12-06, 07:54 PM I wouldn't buy the HD DVD drive yet. Wait until after CES 2007 to see the future of both formats.
But imagine the nice Christmas gift he could get for his wife by returning the PS3 ... an HD DVD player and about 15 HD DVD movies! :D
I just tried watching TFE on my PS3, had two hard locks (had to turn off the PS3 and back on again to get any functionality back). Hopefully they get this fixed, or better yet get a remastered version of TFE out. The current one looks like they dragged the print out of the garbage can.
But imagine the nice Christmas gift he could get for his wife by returning the PS3 ... an HD DVD player and about 15 HD DVD movies! :D
No, the wife won't allow that. In fact, I have not told her that I am getting the HD-DVD drive. That will be a surprise :D She will be happy that I am returing the PS3 though. She thought I was insane to camp out and spend $600 on a "video game" when I already had a 360.
Broccoli 12-12-06, 08:04 PM I wouldn't buy the HD DVD drive yet. Wait until after CES 2007 to see the future of both formats.
I can tell you what happens in 2007. We will see many good movies for both formats. Neither will go away any time soon.
And if there are problems with PS3 playback they will fix it with a firmware update.
cokecan 12-12-06, 08:14 PM I love my PS3, but it croaked at end of Talladega Nights for me (was the first thing I did with the unit before I rented some games)..
The PS3 appeard to think it was playing as the time was ticking, but video was frozen and no sound..
The market does not need, want or can sustain two different formats. Either HD DVD or Blu-ray will lose support during 2007. This time next year it will be clear which format will replace DVD's.
isaidme 12-12-06, 08:20 PM Anytime someone claims that Sony dropped the ball with PS3 then refer to their xbox360 as if it was perfect is a Troll. People that have a PS3 and have something bad to say about it either, A: Have a bad unit, which Sony will replace with a brand new one within two weeks and wont charge you $130 to fix it, B: have an out dated HDTV, C: Didnt do their homework before buying, D: will never be pleased with anything ever.
Anytime someone claims that Sony dropped the ball with PS3 then refer to their xbox360 as if it was perfect is a Troll.
Yes, reading these forums anyone would think the X-Box 360 is as solid as the Rock of Gibraltar.
WriteSimple 12-12-06, 08:25 PM And who are you referring to as a Troll? People who actually own the PS3 and speak out against it? Question: Did you try The Fifth Element on your PS3 and it told you it can't read the disc? Can it read other BD movies?
Please be specific as to how Sony drop the ball.

enricot 12-12-06, 08:41 PM I enjoy both formats; however I was disappointed when my PS3 had two lock-ups requiring a reboot last night while watching Sky High with my children. On a side note, my HD-A1 has a much worse track record with lockups. Nothing is worse than showing off your new purchase to friends when issues like this occur. It makes them think twice before investing in either format. I just hope this is corrected with a firmware update from Sony. I understand I am an early adopter, but all of us just want to enjoy our new Hi-def entertainment without problems.
Andrew P 12-12-06, 09:25 PM I had a few issues with my PS3 as well. It froze playing two movies. No big deal, but all of these first gen players I expect to have some minor issues.
HybridHB 12-12-06, 09:56 PM So far I cant play one disc. I got Underworld from block buster and it wouldnt play. I thought it was just because the disc was all scratched up though. It looked like someone went ice skating on the disc.
I can't speak to which titles are incompatible, but I've watched the following titles with no glitches to date.
MI:3
Eight Below
Ice Age 2
Underworld Evolution
X-Men 3
Tears of the Sun
Layer Cake
Superman Returns
Stealth
Chemistry Live (Japanese concert video)
Dinosaurs
Fantastic Four
Thistledown 12-12-06, 10:09 PM Perhaps I'll try swapping the disc out where I bought it before I decide to return it and wait for TFE re-release.
well all i can say is underworld works.
Its the only bluray tittle we own .
HybridHB 12-12-06, 10:29 PM Thats good to know, i guess ill rent it again and hopefully get a better disc :).
MidnightWatcher 12-12-06, 10:43 PM So far I cant play one disc. I got Underworld from block buster and it wouldnt play. I thought it was just because the disc was all scratched up though. It looked like someone went ice skating on the disc.
Scratches may have went deeper than 0.1 mm. That would do it.
Robert George 12-12-06, 10:43 PM I am now up to 43 Blu-ray discs in my collection. I can't say I have tried every one of them in the Ps3 since getting it, but I have looked at most of them. Every BD I have put in the PS3, including The Fifth Element, has played flawlessly. No skips, freezes, hiccups, or anything else untoward. In all honesty, I wish I could say the same thing for HD DVD.
On the other hand, I haven't met a stand-alone BD player that I would take over the HD-A2 yet. In the Blu-universe (Bluniverse?), the PS3 is an anomaly. A really nice anomaly, but still a unique product.
whotony 12-12-06, 10:49 PM I love my PS3, but it croaked at end of Talladega Nights for me (was the first thing I did with the unit before I rented some games)..

exactly what happened to me.

Looks like the A2 may have fixed a lot of those issues, from what I've been reading.

I'm sure that was deliberate.
Sony did us a favor :D
Come on people we all know not all movies will work on all players this early in the game. My first dvd player wouldnt play some early disney dvds and i didnt drop dvd..

its the revenge of the HD-DVD trolls!
LOL I have 32 blu-ray movies and they all play and look great on my 60gb japanese PS3.
cheers
So there is not any compatible issues between the Br titles and the PS3?

Yes, I also have the A2. The new HD DVD does make some notable improvements in operability from the first gen. I'd place the A2 along side the Samsung BD player for ease of use and speed of loading a disc. Both of those faster and less "twitchy" than the Sony and Pioneer players. However, I did encounter some issues with the A2 in the first couple of days (disc incompatibility and a couple of freeze-ups in the menus). Thankfully, those issues seem to have sorted themselves out. I have been running a number of discs through the A2 and no problems in the past two days.
krinkle 12-13-06, 12:59 AM So there is not any compatible issues between the Br titles and the PS3?
There are no compatibility issues with BD titles andf the PS3. Don't believe the FUD.

I own (In order of purchase):
Taladega Nights
Monster House
Ice Age Meltdown
Superman Returns
Aeon Flux
Kung Fu Hustle
X-Men III
Rented:
MI:III
Hitch
Lord of War
Corpse Bride
All have played on the PS3 with no problems from software versions 1.0 to 1.3 (current).
Devil Wears Prada, Phantom of the Opera, and Ant Bully will arrive from Amazon on Friday. I expect they'll work as well.
I own:
Taladega Nights
Ice Age 2
The Transporter
Blazing Saddles
I've rented:
The Corpse Bride
Kingdom of Heaven
Black Hawk Down
House of Flying Daggers
All have worked fine on the PS3. Zero problems.
sweetmisery 12-13-06, 02:14 AM Whats an FUD?
But not that Im bashing or anything, but with the dozens of forums Im at, the usual complainers are from posters who got 20 posts or less. I know some of those complains are true, but the ratio of complainers from new users are just too many for me not to be suspicious.
And worst, some complain then make statements like "I rather go with (insert rival company here)".
Andrew P 12-13-06, 06:12 AM I wouldnt say compatibillity issues, just some discs had playback issues that were not repeatable. I own both HD DVD and BD and have experienced some minor problems on all of my players. Not the end of the world by any means.
svalley 12-13-06, 07:54 AM I had Brothers Grimm from Blockbuster and it won't play on my PS3
It stucks in the screen that say "your movie will start soon, press pop-up
menu button......." The disk looks flawless to me.
The other disk I got from BB was Monster house, and it plays fine even it
got more scratches on it.
Perhaps there are just bad units floating around out there. It wouldn't be the first time sony's launch units had some problems.
Its not like all the xbox 360s worked flawlessly .
If your unit isn't working properly with all bluray discs hop e fully you have an extended warrenty and you can return it to the store after the holidays and get a new unit that works perfectly
BOSS10L 12-13-06, 08:10 AM Fifth Element works perfectly on my PS3
You mean aside from the PQ, right? ;)
I really hope Sony re-masters and re-releases this title.
And FWIW, I'm in the 20 percentile. :D
Are you shocked someone would actually return a PS3 to the store? I was not bashing Blu-ray, and I was not promoting HD-DVD or the 360. I just stated that I am not pleased with the PS3 and that I planned on adding a HD-DVD drive to my 360. I am a movie and game lover at heart, regardless of format or platform. Remember, I did camp out for 2 1/2 days to get a PS3. Sony marketed this thing to be head and shoulders above the competition, and I don't believe Sony met those claims.
Just because I am new to this forum does not mean that I don't have a lot of time, money, and knowledge invested in my HT setup. There is no need to insult me or call me names. That is the problem with this world.... people are so arrogant, argumentative, and rude. Just relax and enjoy life.... it is too short to get so upset over trivial manners.
efranzen 12-13-06, 08:22 AM There are no compatibility issues with BD titles andf the PS3. Don't believe the FUD.
Actually, Legends of Jazz will not play on the PS3. There are a couple of threads discussing it, including one that was started by Kris Deering. I'm not sure if I would consider his statement as FUD.
csnow - what is it you are dissapointed in with regards to the PS3? I genuinely want to know.
Thanks.
Thistledown 12-13-06, 08:43 AM Unfortunately, I'm one of those with < 20 posts. However, I have both HD-DVD (the A1) and Blu-Ray (PS3). My problem is legitimate. I'm not bashing Blu-Ray. I'm not all that surprised there is a title in a new format that doesn't work on a player. It's just a little frustrating. Sony Customer Support told me TFE was on the incompatibility list, but I wonder if the rep was just feeding me a line since it sounds like several people on this thread have played The Fifth Element without any problems on a PS3. As I mentioned before, I'll try swapping it out at my local retailer and try a different copy.
The trait I like most about the PS3's Blu-Ray capabilities: It doesn't take 2 minutes to boot up and load a disc like my Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD player.
theswami 12-13-06, 09:08 AM No, the wife won't allow that. In fact, I have not told her that I am getting the HD-DVD drive. That will be a surprise :D She will be happy that I am returing the PS3 though. She thought I was insane to camp out and spend $600 on a "video game" when I already had a 360.
She's right....you were insane to camp out ans spend $600 on a PS3 when you had a 360. The systems are different but unless you are a really hardcore gamer or hi-def movie buff there is no point in owning both.
I have not experienced a single freeze-up on my PS3. So far I have used it more for games but both blu-ray's I watched (Talladaga Nights and Terminator 2) worked without issues.
Over in the Playstation thread there is a poll -- how many times has your PS3 frozen up:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=764748
The poll seems to indicate that some units have problems with about 9% freezing up more than 7 times.
However the most common response was never (56%) the second most common response was once (21%).
I would think if you are experiencing constant freeze-ups that you may have a defective unit that needs to be replaced since most owners are not having this problem.
PATTON67 12-13-06, 10:56 AM I just watched Fifth Element BR over the weekend...played fine....
BM
The fifth element works fine on the PS3, just watched it last week. It looked "pretty good" for an old movie, definetely MUCH better than it did on standard DVD.
Buying Kindom of Heaven now... Can't wait to see how that looks!
Oh yeah and Tallegada nights SUCKS as a BD title. The PQ is on par with DVD if that.
WhoMe14 12-13-06, 11:24 AM I have only watched 5 or six titles on my PS3, to date all of them have played with no problems atall. The PS3 definatly does a better job at playing video discs than the PS2 did with DVDs.
All 15 blu-ray movies I've watched on PS3 worked perfectly fine (even TFE).

The market doesn't want or need two formats, but it can easily sustain two different ones no problem. The industry doesn't need or want to support more than one gaming console, but it has been for over 30 years now, and the movie industry is still a bigger industry than gaming is so it can easily do it as well.

this is simply NOT TRUE the video game industry has been bigger than the movie industry since 2004.

considering how many people never had any issues, it is more like that issue is in disc itself rather than actual PS3...

It was a sales tool IBM used to use to convince their customers to stay away from rival mainframe hardware manufacturers. Now it's a generic term used anytime someone uses those things together to manipulate people's purchasing decisions, opinions, etc.

Pretty much. I've never understood fandboyitis, yet it seems to be so rampant since the dueling formats debuted.
If you arent happy with PS3 for whatever reason thats your buisness, but why not try a stand alone Blu-Ray player, you just jump on HD-DVDs bandwagon because of one bad disk, thats not PS3s fault. There might just be a fix for it,

Maybe because many people would have to stretch the budget to get a
PS3 let alone a stand alone player@ $700.00 and up  I really don't get why all you fanboys (Both sides) are so fixated on who wins it doesn't really matter in 18-24 months some of the group will invest in a new system if one goes away in the mean time I started with the least expensive outlay to get HD and after the holidays I will get a 20 gig PS3 for Blu playback..... I got a Wii for games (I for one want fun family games I can play with my kids 5 & 13 so FPS are not my top picks)

Yes it can and will sustain two. It would have been easier to have only one format but competition is always good. Since the disks are physically the same size I believe they will both survive, and we will have a combo player by end of next year or beginning of 08. It will take that long before the main stream even looks at this stuff anyway.
I just got my PS3 today so not sure about play back issues, but I had play back problems with my Toshiba HD-A1 as well. I have noticed that the HD-A1 is overly sensitive to fingerprints, smudges, etc. so maybe that is the case with PS3 too. I always wipe my disks before playing them now and I haven't had too many problems.
I am an HD Fanboy!

I have not played all my disks, and I have gone through the 3rd firmware upgrade as of last night. (I downloaded a free game recently from the ps3 store, and now it asks me to do fw upgrade from bootup if it finds an upgrade).
Of the 20 or so disks that I played on this, I have yet to find one that did not play. On the 60gb, My T5E that came with the vaio BD PC plays, all fox titles KoH,X3,F4,LXG play, click and nacho libre had been played a few times by my kids, Superman Returns, HoFD, Kungfu Hustle, Aeon Flux, Monster House, The Wild, BHD,TotS and a bunch of others --- all of these have gone through at least once. Many more disks have at least gone through the menu or the first chapter. I did not find one disk that did not play. Latest FW is 1.31 for me.
There was one hang in LXG, with a 20GB PS3 that sat on top of a PC (perhaps the heat vent was too close to the wall, but after a few ffwd, rwd, slow, next, prev buttons, it played for a few secs and froze. I saw this behavior on PotO with HD-DVD, but unlike that title, I could not replicate the hang --- it could be that the player's exhaust has to have lots of space. The hang occured on the machine that was in a corner placed horizontally with barely 1 inch of clearance to the drywall. It was only on about 1 hour though. When put upright with lots of space above, I could not get it to freeze.
I think when it heats up bad enough, it hangs or shuts down, so no enclosed plexiglass or behind closed glass doors for the PS3.
I was watching KOH and the PS3 just completley hung with the part where Orlando Bloom (My god why did they cast him in that role?) was giving the speech right before the war in Jerusalem. It Couldn't get it to Skip, rewind, nothing. I could access the visual menu that comes up when you press one of the buttons on the Remote, and I could also hold down the PS button and it came up with the menu to shut off the system, exit the movie, ect... I told it to exit the movie but the movie still was froze when I told it to exit. I shut the system on and back off and it played fine from there. Hope it just doesn't freeze much more, that could really ruin a moment. Fortunatley Orlando Bloom just really wasn't made for that movie so I didn't care if it cut off his speech.
IeraseU 12-15-06, 01:10 PM Any experience with 'Good Night and Good Luck' on PS3? Here is what I have found:
The movie will playback fine. You can fast forward, rewind, pause, stop and resume with no problems. You cannot however interact with the 'pop-up' menu. You can still access the settings like language and subtitles via the PS3 controller (or remote)....but the pop-up menu can not be accessed (it will pop up, but there is no way to interact with it).
I tried other movies and have not had this trouble. Anyone else have this movie and experiencing any problems? I suppose it is possible it is just my disk, or just my PS3.
WriteSimple 12-15-06, 02:11 PM Well my PS3 also gives me the error will not play disc. Very disappointed since I bought it solely for the TrueHD track.
From HighDefDigest.com (http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/legendsofjazzshowcase.html) LRS also makes history by being the first distributor to offer a Dolby TrueHD track on a Blu-ray release. If I'm not mistaken, 'Showcase' is the first, which gave me a thrill when I plopped into my PlayStation 3 and fired it up. Dolby Digital 5.1 surround and PCM 2.0 stereo options are also offered, each encoded at 640kbps.
The TrueHD track is the clear winner. I'm no audio engineer and certainly not a musical genius, but what a truly magnificent recording this was. The warmth and richness of the entire frequency range is excellent. Bass is deep and rock solid -- there doesn't seem to be a vibration out of place. Separation across the front soundstage is also terrific -- I could locate specific instruments in the mix, yet the sum still feels organic and cohesive. The surrounds, however, are not overt, or at least overdone. Though select instruments are presented with full dynamic range, I honestly felt they were chosen a bit arbitrarily. Crowd noise is also deployed to the rears, though for the majority the musical performances command center stage.
One note, though: the standard Dolby Digital track disappointed me due to what seemed to be a weak center channel. I checked and re-checked all the settings on my receiver, but vocals still sounded a bit echo-ey and distant. Certainly they paled in comparison with the TrueHD track. I hope this was just a technical problem with my set up, and not an encode problem with the disc (no such problems with vocals on the PCM stereo track, by the way).

ragedogg69 12-15-06, 02:34 PM I was watching KOH and the PS3 just completley hung with the part where Orlando Bloom (My god why did they cast him in that role?) was giving the speech right before the war in Jerusalem. Fortunatley Orlando Bloom just really wasn't made for that movie so I didn't care if it cut off his speech.
i had the same thing happen to me with Ice age and Xmen 3, I then cut holes in my AV rack for ventilation and have not had any problems since then.
colleycol 12-15-06, 03:07 PM I thought that was the hard fact. Then somebody posted about playing this disc on his/her PS3 using the HDMI connection to listen to the TrueHD track. It was a pretty good review. So I don't think it's quite a universal problem.

The disc maker is replacing discs free of charge due to an authroing error by them. I seen a rep on here that gave out an 1-800 number.
Neo1965 12-15-06, 03:18 PM Any experience with 'Good Night and Good Luck' on PS3? Here is what I have found:
The movie will playback fine. You can fast forward, rewind, pause, stop and resume with no problems. You cannot however interact with the 'pop-up' menu. You can still access the settings like language and subtitles via the PS3 controller (or remote)....but the pop-up menu can not be accessed (it will pop up, but there is no way to interact with it).
I tried other movies and have not had this trouble. Anyone else have this movie and experiencing any problems? I suppose it is possible it is just my disk, or just my PS3.
If your popup menu comes up, did you press triangle again to make the PS3 navigation go away? Once it goes away, the arrow and X button should work on the popup menu. At least that's what I saw on kungfu hustle. I am using FW 1.31.
With the report of KoH freezing, I will watch this title again this weekend. I did not have problem the first time I watched it but it was an earlier firmware.
IeraseU 12-15-06, 03:32 PM Yes I tried everything to make it work, including taking out the disk turning off the PS3 and reinserting. I'm not really that bothered by this 'bug' since the movie does play....but I do think Sony should look into it. I couldnt say if this is an issue with firmware 1.31, or if it occurs regardless of what firmware revision you have.

i dont have an hdmi receiver yet but i thought you needed at least hdmi 1.3 to get the pcm and trueHD from the ps3? will <1.3 hdmi work?
WriteSimple 12-15-06, 11:04 PM i dont have an hdmi receiver yet but i thought you needed at least hdmi 1.3 to get the pcm and trueHD from the ps3? will <1.3 hdmi work? You only need a receiver with HDMI 1.1 that can handle 5.1-7.1 audio input. Whether or not you want the receiver to be able to allow sound processing depends on the model number and your budget. You don't need 1.3 to get LPCM via HDMI. You need 1.3 to get the undecoded TrueHD and DTS HDMA bitstream off the PS3.
If you do want to get a HDMI receiver, make sure that it also passes 1080p video.

Andrew P 12-16-06, 02:52 PM My biggest problem is the random HDMI drops that I have experienced on most movies. I have tried two PS3's and the drops occur on both. I have also tried two HDMI cables. I hope it is not my Pearl. Now I am going to try the second HDMI port as this is all with port 1. I have no problems with any other HDMI device with the projector though. Strange?
I was the one that posted about KOH freezing, its not something that is redundant and it has only done this once. I have played KOH about 4 times already all the way through to show other people and only once (what is mentioned above) did this happen. I have my PS3 on its side beside the TV with plenty of air around it. And yes I have it sitting on its side the correct way so that it vents all the air out proper, I can 't imagine if someone else puts it on the side the wrong way. Anyways thats the only time it ever happened and so far I have watched 7 movies in the PS3. I just joined net-flix so that is about to quadruple within the next month.
RabidRob 12-17-06, 01:07 AM Come on people we all know not all movies will work on all players this early in the game. My first dvd player wouldnt play some early disney dvds and i didnt drop dvd..
That is Unacceptable
After more than a month of ownership and 15 BD movies viewed, I just had my first glitch ever with a Blu-ray disc on my PS3. The Japanese version of "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" had some severe streaking and pixelization during the "Thanks for All the Fish" intro at the beginning of the film. This is the only part of the movie that had this problem. The rest played back flawlessly.
I know this hasn't been released in the U.S. yet, but does anyone have any similar experience with the imported Japanese version on their PS3 or other Blu-ray player? It's only the second AVC-encoded title that I have, so I'm wondering if it's a problems with the disc or the PS3. FYI, I have firmware version 1.31 currently installed.
bhuntatwork 12-17-06, 10:15 PM 17 Discs including TFE and no problems here!
isaidme 12-17-06, 11:31 PM Ive had no problems with X3, Superman Returns, Nacho Libre. The only problem I did have was that the TN that came with my PS3 sucks, but the movie played fine.
space2001 12-18-06, 07:39 AM I had 2 lockups on Ice age 2 but was able to restart it using the PS button then i played fine past this point. Also note guys this happend on a Regular DVD for me. So I think its something in the firmware that needs to be addressed.
Using firmware 1.31
I tired looking for it but is there a website that we can write to sony with this problem so they can look into it and fix the lockups.
Thanks.
60GB 1.31 HDMI 3 freezes one while watching movie and @ while playing Tiger Woods. Moved out of entertainment center and working better but still froze last night after 2 hours of Tiger Woods. Hope this can be fixed
I haven't had any more problems with Blu-Ray movies....but the new Simpsons Season 9 DVD 1 has problems playing on my PS3. The first time I tried it, it just showed a black screen when it got to the Simpsons movie preview. The audio played in the background, but the screen just stayed black. I could pull up the "Turn off controller/system screen" but it wouldn't respond when I selected any of the options.
The second time I tried it, it made it through the Simpsons movie preview...but at the main menu, it wouldn't let me input anything. The background animation played...but I couldn't select the episode.
I then gave up and put it in my 360 and it all played fine.
Maybe because Fifth Element looks so bad Sony disabled the ability to play this movie in the PS3.
Bwahahah! SIG material :D
Get a replacement PS3 if you are having problems.
Get a replacement PS3 if you are having problems.
I'm not having many problems. In general, it plays everything I throw at it....it's just a couple specific titles that the PS3 has issues with.
metalsaber 12-20-06, 10:11 AM I've played 10 BD movies on my PS3 and all played. I've had maybe 2 lockups, but after a restart, they played fine.
guamster 12-20-06, 02:23 PM I've had the pS3 for about a week and I've been able to play Monster House, Ice Age: the Meltdown and League of Extraordinary Men all the way through. Last night, I had my first problem with the movie Speed. More than 5 times, the movie would freeze and the PS3 would not accept any commands. After about 10 seconds or so, the movie would resume. No lock-ups but way too many freezes. Very annoying.
Video Engineer 12-20-06, 02:35 PM Looks like we are getting another flood of Trolls in here again.
During side by side testing I found the HD DVD addon to have better PQ than PS3. Hands down!.
JosephShaw 12-20-06, 05:53 PM The only time I had problems was when the ambient temp in my theater was at 82 degrees and I think the unit overheated a little. It was a warm day last week when the temps jumped up, but we're back with highs in the 50s for now, and the ambient temp in the theater has stayed around 74 without the AC on, and I haven't noticed any problems.
Also, my PS3 is not in a cabinet or enclosure of any kind, and it's not near any other heat generating electronic gear.
Chris Dotur 12-20-06, 09:41 PM Strange... I put in X-Men 3 tonight and booted up the PS3. It too came up to a black screen that did nothing. With the controller, I could hold the PS button and get the "turn off controller/system" screen, but that was about it. Pressing the circle button gave me a "this command not possible here" statement or something like that.
Happened twice in a row. Third time, I ejected the X3 disc and booted up the PS3. Worked normal. THEN put in the X3 disc and it started fine when I selected it from the root menu.
isaidme 12-20-06, 10:08 PM Damn PioManiac, I can see the black heads on the soldier and old acne scars on the girl.
Good for us at home, bad for the actors.
Neo1965 12-21-06, 01:27 AM Pio,
What you observed is consistent with what I saw. BHD has clarity of detail in faces not seen in any other disk on any other format that I saw. Whether it is Jack Black in KK or even Christine in Phantom of the Opera, you can strain to watch faces closely and while some come very close, there is no face closeup that you can point to and say that this looks like the best digital camera closeup of a human face on the screen. You always know it looks worse than a digital camera.
BHD has many money shots where you see every single detail and comes very close to what a digital camera can capture in closeups.
Now whether this is because KingKong's camera was just not as sharp or BHD's camera or whether it is the codec, I can't say, but if you ignore the absence of eye candy and the consistent brown dust look, BHD is a beautiful transfer.
Even in KoH, which is only marginally not as consistent as BHD, Liam Neeson's face there has more closeups that show detail than closeups in BatmanBegins.
UxiSXRD 12-21-06, 01:33 AM I have 6 BD and 7 HD-DVD and no freezes or stutters yet on the PS3.
I was getting some stuttering with King Kong on HD-DVD from the 360 add-on when set to 1080i output. I intended to do some testing, but at the time I was putting the blame on U-control/memory since the effect seemed most similar to frame buffering to me, but when I switched the Xbox to 720p output it went away immediately.
I would give the edge to the 360 for gaming right now, but that's to be expected. If the PS3 had launched just 2 months ago, it would have been a very different story. Gears of War, Rainbox 6 Vegas, Viva Pinata and some others all came very recently and it was definitely more famine than feast before November with such illustrious titles as Over-G fighters...
Chris Dotur 12-21-06, 02:15 AM Just had a freeze with X3 during the Xavier/Pheonix battle scene. It played fine through the actual movie, and again when I played it with the 1st commentary track. Froze up during the 2nd commentary track. Room and unit was still kept cool, so wasn't heat.
That's my first lockup so far.
My PS3 played back 'The Fifth Element' without any problem!
WilliamC 12-21-06, 01:34 PM Are you shocked someone would actually return a PS3 to the store?
You have to understand a lot of these people are fanboys and overly obsessed with one format, whether HD-DVD or BD. Think of like a child loaded with sugar, crack, and a dash of insanity. Then this child joins a cult, either BD or HD-DVD. Anyone who offends or says anything negative about their side, they go off and insult and deny. Is the PS3 defective? Too soon to tell. Is the 360 flawless? Hell no. Is BD or HD-DVD flawless? Once again, Hell no.
Its a format war, not a life and death matter like some people are treating it. If you go to either this forum or the HD-DVD you'll see people starting conspiracies. I'm surprised someone hasn't come up with something like the Fifth element looks terrible because toshiba secretly replaced the copies or that HD-DVD's slow load times are because sony.
On another note, I would exchange the disc. Usually these issues are because of a bad disc. Regardless of which format you end up with, expect problems with both.
Jiffylush 12-21-06, 03:07 PM Come on people we all know not all movies will work on all players this early in the game. My first dvd player wouldnt play some early disney dvds and i didnt drop dvd..
I had this problem with Snow White SE or whatever, holy crap I forgot all about that...
Wow, I can't believe I forgot, it would lock up during the run up to the menu, worked fine on my htpc. That is actually the reason I don't own a standalone dvd player.
Good times, thanks for reminding me!
NamesJay 12-22-06, 09:27 AM First title I watched on my PS3 was Black Hawk Down (last night) and it froze up about halfway through the movie.
It hung up so bad I couldn't even choose any of the options (fast forward, play, rewind, etc., etc). I had to flip off the power to the PS3 and then turn it back on, and everything worked again.
Hopefully this is something fixable for a firmware update.
UxiSXRD 12-22-06, 12:35 PM I watched the last half of BHD again last night after I upgraded to 1.32 and no freezes. I'm connected by HDMI to my 60XBR1 with optical to my Sony AV Receiver
I'm curious if they're any correlation to setup, perhaps. .
wolfmanjack210 12-25-06, 02:47 AM Proud owner of a 60 GB PS3. Have bought the following Blu -ray Discs:
KoH
BHD
Ice Age
LoW
Pear Harbor
Knight's Tale (Xmas present from gf)
Not a single problem during playback for any of these movies.
vurbano 12-25-06, 07:50 AM I had 2 lockups on Ice age 2 but was able to restart it using the PS button then i played fine past this point.

Skoobooz 12-25-06, 10:08 AM No trouble so far with my 20 gig PS3 playing Enemy of the State, Devil Wears Prada and Kingdom of Heaven, but I'm going to try Speed, Terminator 2 and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back in a day or two...
Chris Dotur 12-26-06, 02:14 AM Few if any problems during BD playback.
But I have something consistent that I'm wondering if anyone else has--if I put in a BD disc immediately as the PS3 is booting up, it will go to a black screen and stay there that responds to almost nothing. I have to eject the disc and reboot. If I boot up the PS3 to the main menu and THEN insert a BD, it works fine.
UxiSXRD 12-26-06, 02:45 AM Do you have auto login configured? The PS3 is supposedly to be able to boot up into a disc, rather than the XMB, if it's in standby and you put a disc in. In fact, it's VERY fast at it, which makes it a great BD player....

curious..how do u configure autologin for blu-ray movie on ur ps3?
Chris Dotur 12-26-06, 11:35 AM Yeah, I'd like to know also, how to configure "auto login"
Geez, I wish the "manual" for the Ps3 was better.
mike683 12-26-06, 11:52 AM Actually, Legends of Jazz will not play on the PS3. There are a couple of threads discussing it, including one that was started by Kris Deering. I'm not sure if I would consider his statement as FUD.
I agree. My copy of Legends of Jazz will not play either. Other titles work fine but that is not working at all.
Is anyone aware of blu-ray incompatibilities with the new playstation 3? I have Talladega Nights, Underworld: Evolution, and The Fifth Element. The latter two I just picked up.
Talladega and Underworld work flawlessly and look fantastic. When I try to load up The Fifth Element, the disc takes about a minute before the disc icon pops up (instead of 4-5 seconds). Then when I run the disc, it bounces we back after about 30 seconds and gives me an error.
This video will not play
(80029940)
I called Sony and they said The Fifth Element is incompatible with the PS3. I'm assuming this is a firmware problem and due to the fact that The Fifth Element was one of the first Blu-Ray discs. It's just disheartening to think that there could be more compatibility problems in the future.
My copy of The Fifth Element (own) exhibits the same long disc icon pop up and will not play showing the same :

I wonder if there could be a problem with the manufacturing runs (burns) on this blu-ray disk from the manufacturer? I have no idea on where one would find this info but for a guess, what does it say below the names LUB BESSON & ROBERT MARK KAMEN on the back outer cover. Mine has 15018LIT . Could you tell me if yours is the same.
Thanks
Tripjammer 12-27-06, 11:46 AM I have no problems playing back BluRay discs in my PS3.
My PS3 played Fifth Element just fine. But it will not play Kingdom of Heaven. I get the "Unable to play video (80029940)" message. I called Sony and they suggested doing a system restore under the system settings menu, which I did not do because I didn't have any of my game saves or downloads backed up. So they suggested getting another copy of the movie.

I wouldn't recommend you do it either.....because I did! Picked up Stealth and Black Hawk Down for my PS3 (60GB, 1.32 firmware, component output). BHD wouldn't play, just churned for a minute or so and it gave the 80029940 error. Stealth played fine once, then was giving the same error as BHD, so naturally I called Sony. They had me do the system restore.....first off, it took around three and a half hours to do. Lost all my PS2 copied saves(Sony REALLY needs to work on their interface for that!) but was able to move R:FOM and GT:HD saves off to USB and back. Second, it didn't solve the problem.
What did solve the problem, oddly enough, was to clean the discs. They didn't have any visible marks on them, but I spent a few minutes gently cleaning each with a microfiber cloth, and since I did I have had no problems....BHD, Stealth, and Crank all play flawlessly on the unit. You might want to try that before going through any return process....

I tried cleaning the disc, even though the disc looked flawless. I used a dry soft cloth, without cleaning solution. Unfortunately, I can't try it again because I've already sent it back in the mail and requested a replacement via Netflix. Luckily, replacements are super easy through Netflix.
Don't know if anyone here knows this, but don't turn on the PS3 and put a movie in with out 1st having your TV on and set to the correct input, if you don't do this then there will be a HDMI handshake problem and it will sit there with a grey screen. You have to turn on your TV and select the correct input before turning on you PS3 and have it directly boot up into movie mode.
brightsons 01-13-07, 05:00 PM I just received this same error while trying to watch Kingdom of heaven (I got it from netflix today). I have 4 blu ray movies so far and this is the only one to give me problems. I've already tried cleaning the disc (even though their isn't a single scratch on it) so it looks like I'll be sending back to netflix and getting a replacement.
Can someone please change the title of this thread? I think it is safe to say there are ZERO BD movies that are incompatible with the PS3. Sure there are some isolated problems as there usually are with any player however none are incompatible.
creiter 07-19-07, 10:55 AM Although it may not be immediately apparent, this is an error due to a broken/unplayable disc --look VERY carefully at the outer edge of the disc in direct sunlight. It seems a lot of people are getting this with Netflix shipped discs. It is not a Sony compatibility problem, despite what people are saying and blaming Sony unfairly. I've yet to see any PS3/blueray compatability problem and I only use the PS3 for bluray -- no games, it is a great bluray player. I received this error on 2 discs last night, although the previous discs I received from netflix worked fine. The discs went in and the machine took a couple minutes to even show the bluray icon (instead of a few seconds), after selecting bluray it took another couple minutes to report "This video cannot be played." (80029940). The disc looked clean and undamaged at first glance. A reboot did not help. I was able to play other bluray discs that I owned. I doubted a compatibility issue because one of the discs was the 2nd disc in a series and the first played fine. After searching other forums I found a post by VintonC on gamesey com who knew what he was talking about and said he occassionally received Netflix blurays with hairline fractures (rarely happens with regular DVD's possibly due to their sorting machines and bluray disc thickness). Upon reinspection in direct sunlight I saw a small crack on the outer edge of both discs. Being an audiophile/videophile and not a gamer I'm posting on this forum that I reference frequently but Thanks goes to VintonC on gamesey.
Travis M 07-19-07, 04:35 PM I couldn't get Little man to even show up on my PS3 and I tried putting it in multiple times. All other BR's have worked.
