Samsung BDP-1000

Will pick up a 60GB PS3 when I can get one at Best BUy
HTPC users use the "other ' option and explain in a comments post .
xbdestroya 12-13-06, 01:54 PM Kosty why does this poll have an 'HD-DVD' option, but the equivelent poll in the HD-DVD forum does not? Since I can tell it was a space issue there, don't you think it would have been less contentious to leave it off here as well? ;)
And in the spirit of polling guys here's also a poll in the HDTV Media section that tries to capture a snapshot of ownership in both camps:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=768082
You should have made this a public poll, so we can see who votes.
xbdestroya 12-13-06, 02:06 PM Both polls (mine and Kosty's) are in fact public - you just need to click on one of the vote numbers to see who voted.
You should have made this a public poll, so we can see who votes. This is a public poll.
This is a great thread! For the sake of reliability, please be honest in your answers.
This is a public poll.
Ah, my bad. I'm used to the ones that say "This is a public poll" on the bottom.
Kosty why does this poll have an 'HD-DVD' option, but the equivelent poll in the HD-DVD forum does not? Since I can tell it was a space issue there, don't you think it would have been less contentious to leave it off here as well? ;)
And in the spirit of polling guys here's also a poll in the HDTV Media section that tries to capture a snapshot of ownership in both camps:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=768082 Because I made the up the HD DVD one first and I didn't think of it until I was trying to fill up the 10 options in the Blu-ray poll. No malice was intended. I promise I will go back when these polls close and since its public, I will manually post what Blu-ray owners also own an HD DVD player.
I also made a mistake in the HD DVD poll, I typed HD XA1 twice instead of adding HD XA2. I added a note to that effect.
don't you think it would have been less contentious to leave it off here as well? ;) Yep it would, but I can't revise this and a lot of guys have already posted so I let it ride. If people vote in both places, if the option is on one of the polls we can have a correct data set. I'll pace a comment on the HD DVD poll side.
RocketChild 12-13-06, 02:55 PM I am waiting for a good combo BR/HD DVD player to arrive. There is enough talk/speculation about them for me to sit on my hands for now.
I have the 60Gig Playstation 3 and the HD-A1 player.... so both.
Scott Tucker 12-13-06, 03:09 PM I will never own a Bluray player or recorder.
Mustang1 12-13-06, 03:39 PM me neither, Blu-ray is teh shitz.
crap!
I voted before I saw "I also own and HD DVD player", a feature mising from the HD DVD poll...
xbdestroya 12-13-06, 07:30 PM @Kosty: No worries, I wasn't trying to come down on you. :) I agree that it's better to have it than not, it just leads to that sort of 'static' in the air is all.
@Scott Tucker and Mustang: Then... why are you here?
@Dave Blu-ray: Dave Blu-ray, what the hell? Voting for every single player is just idiotic. We're trying to get an *honest* sampling here.
I want to know how the 7 people got the pioneer before it is released!!!
xbdestroya 12-13-06, 08:05 PM It's because pre-orders count for the purposes of the poll.
AnthonyP 12-13-06, 09:18 PM PS3 not quite yet (pre-order, while looking on a regular basis). I am also thinking of getting the Pany but it is hard to find and I might wait for the next gen
Dave Blu-ray, looks like you couldn't make up your mind, so you bought all 7!

ThePrisoner 12-13-06, 10:18 PM Got me a 20GB PS3, also an HD-A1:)
majortom 12-13-06, 10:19 PM I checked that I have a 60GB PS3, but I actually have a 20GB unit (two actually).

A large amount of PS3 owners have posted here in this poll in the Blu-ray player forum.
IeraseU 12-14-06, 02:47 PM I have a PS3 60gb and I think it's a great blu-ray player. Biggest gripe right now is the lack of remote.
PS3 si working great for me, might even sell my HTPC.
ChrisW6ATV 12-15-06, 01:56 AM If your HTPC has a Blu-ray drive, you could sell it to Dave-Blu-Ray so he can say he owns one of every possible device on the market. ;)
Dave Mack 12-15-06, 02:43 AM The Philips owners seem lonely. Here, have a cookie...
:)
rcavictor1956 12-15-06, 06:31 AM I have the 20gb PS3 and my HD-DVD add-on. I will be buying movies on blu ray and picking up Universal titles for my hd-dvd drive.

phansson 12-15-06, 10:33 AM Very interesting post.
It appears that the PS3 contingent is a little stronger than I expected.
Look at that Sony jump. Only been out two weeks and more owners than any other stand alone unit.
pifemaster 12-15-06, 10:41 AM I own a Toshiba HD-XA1
I have a Toshiba HD-XA2 on pre-order @ VE
I have a Pioneer Elite BDP-HD1 on pre-order @ VE
EDIT - Added PS3 60 gig after I voted.
Bob.
khwiggins2 12-15-06, 10:43 AM Question...from the wording of the poll, I thought you only wanted to hear from BR owners correct? So if I currently only have an HD-A1, I shouldn't vote at all correct?
Adam_ME 12-15-06, 11:19 AM Got me a 20GB PS3, also an HD-A1:)
Me too. Well, almost. The 20GB PS3 is en route via an eBay auction. I should have it by the middle of next week. Then I'll officially be format neutral. I've already ordered 6 Blu-ray titles. Next up is the PS3 remote since I'm not too keen on using a game controller.
Ironically, I have no desire to use the PS3 as a gaming machine. Except for maybe Virtua Fighter 5 next year since I'm a big fan of that series.

IeraseU 12-15-06, 12:16 PM I think I'm going to also pick up the HD-DVD add-on for the 360 just to be able to watch any release in HD, but I have more long term hopes for blu-ray at this point.
bump
(for comparitive accuracy with the HD DVD poll)
i just scored a 60g PS3, cost on EBAY is dropping like a rock i payed just 50$ over what it would cost me in the store. the guy i got it from works for Gamestop
afterwards i went to bestbuy to get some blue-ray movies and people were lining up to get 50 pluss PS3 that just came in, RATS.

EngenZerO 12-17-06, 02:56 PM i have a ps3 60GB and the xbox 360 hd-dvd addon.
aaronwt 12-17-06, 04:06 PM I missed the I have an HD DVD player vote. I have 3 HD DVD players along with the PS3 20GB. After using the PS3 for BD playback I wouldn't want to use any other BD player becasue I doubt it could be so smooth and fast. My PS3 will be used for BD playback 90% of the time and probably 10% for SACD playback. I really don't plan on using it for much else. But the SACD playback is nice since the audio will go over HDMI. It sounds much better than my Denon 2200 for SACDs.
bitemymac 12-17-06, 06:26 PM wow.... look how destructive PS3 has become for BD player market. It's currently leading the vote with over 67% out of 258 total votes. It doesn't seem that PS3 is adding the installed base for BD player, but it's dominating the BD player market by taking away hardware sales from other company. This doesn't look good at all. Soon enough, Sony PS3 will be the only BD player left in the market. I did predict this would happen, but I wouldnt' think it would yield such a dominance over the enthusiast group creating such imbalance.
A large amount of PS3 owners have posted here in this poll in the Blu-ray player forum.
I own two HD DVD players and a Blu-Ray player.
xbdestroya 12-18-06, 12:53 AM It doesn't seem that PS3 is adding the installed base for BD player, but it's dominating the BD player market by taking away hardware sales from other company.
You know those two sentences are completely contradictory, right?
The fact that you want to paint the PS3's effects on the BD market as *negative* of all things shows a detachment from the plane of existence which I, at least, find myself on.
bitemymac 12-18-06, 01:26 AM When an individual decides to get a PS3 as sole BD player over CE BD players in the market, the presence of PS3 is still considered as a competition to CE BD player market. When an individual decides to get a PS3 as a gaming console and does use BD player feature, then it's cosidered a positive reflection in supporting the BD player installed base.
so.... out of majority PS3 owners here participating on this survey...... how many consider themselves as an avid gamer?
xbdestroya 12-18-06, 01:36 AM I would say that standlone BD player sales are doing as well as they ever do... maybe even better recently?
PS3 is certainly the dominant player right now, but the standalones still have a place. Certainly for *all* parties concerned, it's better if BD gains momentum, and the PS3 is definitely a factor in that right now.
Plus, I wouldn't be surprised if at CES, one or two companies announce standalones in the $500-600, which should quickly even the field for those that would naturally go for standalones anyway.
BS is a media format before it's a CE consortium; PS3 effects - definite net positive.
At this point the poll response has been good. I've placed link directors to this thread in most of the main product threads including the PS3.
I think it is a good sign for Blu-ray that PS3 owners are posting here and are identifying their PS3 as a Blu-ray player.

ChrisPC 12-20-06, 11:59 PM I've had an HD-A1 for six months, but just stumbled upon a 20GB PS3 last night at Wal-Mart. I could return it with no problem, so I got it. I decided to try it out, and was pleasantly surprised. It came with Talladega Nights, so I could test PQ right away. Once I got it set up, it was pretty nice. I got T2 today, and was really impressed.

UxiSXRD 12-23-06, 02:37 AM Why does this poll say "I also have an HD-DVD player" but there's no similar option for the HD-DVD poll? Shouldn't this have been a multi selectable poll, too? I checked 60GB PS3 but also have the 360 HD-DVD add-on.
AnthonyP 12-23-06, 12:54 PM he already mentioned that. He created the HD DVD one first and did not think about it at the time

joeblow 12-23-06, 03:18 PM 67% of AVS Blu-ray unit owners opted for the PS3? That's a sticker Sony should put on the box of their console. It speaks to the quality and value of the machine, that's for sure.

(Same answer placed in the HD DVD poll thread for accuracy reasons)
Err this is a multiple selectable poll.
If you have both systems then simply vote in both polls in the appropriate threads and mark that option in the Blu-ray poll that you own both formats.
I will publish the results at the same time with some analysis.
Ah post 11. Guess it would help to read the thread. :o
Well , I've tried to make it as easy as possible for dual format owners to post in both polls by insuring easy links and nightime bumps to the first page of the forums.
Since this is a public poll, I will have the data to show dual format owners. If most dual format posters have a easy link to both polls, having the option on one poll or another should be sufficient.
I will calculate out the number of HD DVD owners that also own a Blu-ray player at the end of the poll so we will end up with equal data to compare.
When I list the results I will post that calculated result in HD DVD player thread.
UxiSXRD 12-26-06, 08:35 PM Some preliminary neophyte analysis of the two threads:
Total (BD/HD-DVD): 675/751. I expected a larger disparity than 11% given the head start that HD-DVD had and the mediocre Blu-ray launch.
Combined 20GB and 60GB models, there are 360 PS3's which are 53% of the installed BD base reported at AVS Forum. I am most surprised how many BDP-S1 have already been sold given the relatively short amount of time it's been out. It's also interesting how close the spread is between the Samsung, Panasonic, and Sony players. Would be very interesting to see some tables with data points listing the release date, days at market, and price and some of the corresponding statistics.
On the HD-DVD side, the HD-A1 and 360 add-on are tied with 34% each of the HD-DVD player share. Newcomer A2 being 13% (comparable to the Sony BDP-S1 in percentage).
The game consoles are definitely a significant portion of both markets to date. Should be interesting to see the situation evolve further.

The percentage of Xbox went up 1% this week. The % of HD A1 went down, although the numbers went up, not surprising since the HD A1 is not in inventory.

Err. Too soon for analysis, but some of your your numbers and conclusions are incorrect.
As of now there have been 423 Blu-ray survey responses and 659 HD DVD responses. thats 56% more people reporting HD DVD players in this census to date. Not 11%.
Of the actual totals of all the players reported, there were 475 unique Blu-ray players reported and 770 HD DVD players reported. That's 62% more HD DVD players, not 11%. HD DVD owners seem a bit more likely , about 1 out of 15 has also bought an Xbox add on.
There were 506 stand alone HD DVD owners compared to 191 standalone Blu-ray owners. Thats 2.64 to 1 for HD DVD.
There were 264 XBox 360 HD DVD bundle owners versus 284 PS3 owners reporting . Thats only 1.07 to 1 PS3 owners to HD DVD owners reporting. If we assume that the number of PS3 that show an interest here is somehow consistent with the number of PS3 owners interested in HD playback, then the Xbox 360 HD DVD player bundle is offsetting the PS3 trojan horse for HD movie sales.
Again, this data is only preliminary. I will continue to keep these thread updated until the poll closes. That will give us a sense of the Xmas sales and impact on the holiday season here at AVS.
I am encouraged by the number of PS3 owners that have reported here as owning a Blu-ray player. Those people who have voted in this poll for the PS3 are implied to be using it as a Blu-ray player. That is good news for Blu-ray.
The HD A2 numbers and Xbox 360 have both gone up a lot for HD DVD this week. That is good news for HD DVD.
dauthum 12-27-06, 07:23 AM I have a 20gb PS3, an HD-A1, and an HD-D1. I will buy another 20gb PS3 when my BR collection is bigger and the G.F. bitches about not being able to watch them in the L.R.
dwisniski 12-27-06, 08:13 AM I finally got to try out my new Philips BDP9000 last night, threw in Kingdom Of Heaven on Blu-ray (which I rented from a local blockbuster :) ) and I am very impressed with the player and the HD quality of the disc, in my eyes just as good as the best HD-DVD that is out there (I own a HD-A1 as well). For me at least, the format war is a tie and I'm just glad to be able to enjoy HD movies at all, regardless of format.
UxiSXRD 12-27-06, 01:22 PM Hmm, I must have hit an entry twice or something. Using the calculator right now they come out the same. I was quite careful to not add the "also own an HD-DVD player." Weird. Can never be too soon to start musing over the numbers. :D
I'm again reminded how small the sample is (506 HD-DVD players is a scant percentage of the number out there).
I have the Toshiba A1 and PS3 60 GB.

Actually the sample size is actually quite large compared to the total population of players out there. the issue isn't the sample size, its the non-randomness and self selection bias of the people participating in the poll.
In a poll of this type, if we can assume that the HD DVD and Blu-ray folks are equally motivated then we can assume comparable results.
But the sample size here is actually quite large for the stand alone players and the results are probably representative of evangelical tech savvy early adopters.
The results also correlate with a lot of other evidence we have on Blu-ray and HD DVD movie and player sales so they may end up being very accurate.
And by the way, neither poll has been edited out for the responses of the obvious trolls who voted that they had one of every player type. (just a few, but annoying nonetheless)
Those that legit own several player types will/have already been verified.
That will be corrected for the final analysis.

Anyone vote for 'Also have an HD-DVD' without picking a Blu-Ray player?
Considering how many HD-DVD only people frequent the PS3 and Blu-Ray forum it seems like a very real possibility.

Will check, that's why the responses are public. :) When I did so earlier, I didn't see any, but I will do a complete scrub when I roll up this poll.

I bought my PS3 primarily as a Blu-ray player, although I haven't made that much of a splash as a BD buyer in the month I have owned it. To date I only own 5 BD's compared to 55 HD-DVD's since April. There just aren't that many BD titles I'm interested in yet. I also refuse to pay the ridiculous prices that FOX and others are charging for some BD's. I guess I'm spoiled by paying $19.99 plus a 10% discount for HD-DVD's. FOX and the others better wake up soon, or they will find themselves on the losing side of this format war.
MarcoAD 12-28-06, 11:30 PM I'm with Dauod, I bought my 60gb PS3 for the main reason of going Dual format and getting in on Blu-Ray. I have around 58 HD-DVD's and now 4 BR discs but I've only owned it for 2 days, hehe and I already have all of the back catalog BR discs that I wanted on order and most of the upcoming I want on pre-order. I will use it for gaming as well but not much, Resistance FoM isn't bad and I'll probably pick up Motorstorm but that will be about it for a while. Same with my Xbox360, only a few games I really get into. So far though I'm very impressed with Blu-Ray and the movies I've bought so far. Feels good to be on the fence in this war.
This really is a great poll. It would interesting to do a plot of price versus frequency :o Of course, some of the more expensive players haven't been out long enough to have a significant impact. It will be interesting to see how this looks in another 6 months. The PS3 is looking more and more attractive to me and the results of this poll are reassuring.

Proud owner of a 20GB PS3.
TimHuey 01-22-07, 12:17 AM I was going to post this poll as well but I thought I better check to see if one was already made. I think it should be a sticky, although without the chatter. Just a poll. People can click as they buy. I don't think it should end. It should be editable as new players are announced. Is that possible? Is that desirable? I just think it would be interesting to see what the dominate BD player is. Kinda obvious now though.

TimHuey 01-22-07, 12:29 AM When an individual decides to get a PS3 as sole BD player over CE BD players in the market, the presence of PS3 is still considered as a competition to CE BD player market.
so.... out of majority PS3 owners here participating on this survey...... how many consider themselves as an avid gamer?
I don't know that I agree with that statement. I would think it would be positive for the BD field. If the manufactures get their prices down as expected and hoped then more STB BD player will be sold. I think of this as a natural progession of new electronics. I think all the players are too high priced now as is the PS3. I own the PS3. Hopefully some downward pricing pressure on the STBs will do the trick along with more component available and cheaper parts.

PS> I'm not an avid gamer. I do game.

Tim Huey Well thet decision was made by the mods not to make this a sticky and I have tried to bump it to the first page when it has fallen back.
This poll will close next week, and we'll have some comparison answers.
I've tried to make this as fair as possible, but I still have to edit out some bogus data points.
I own:
1-- PS3 60GB
1-- Sony BDP-S1
1-- Toshiba A1
2-- Toshiba A2's
1-- Xbox 360 HD-DVD add on.
I love HD! :D
tick tock Poll is closing
WriteSimple 01-27-07, 02:47 PM Amazing. 529 PS3 owners combined, resulting in over 70.6% of total ownership. 271 have BD standalones.
fuad
Pretty obvious where the pricing sweet spot is. I bet the other manufacturers are working hard to get down to $500 for a standalone BD player.
efranzen 01-27-07, 07:55 PM bump 653 votes
If you're trying to determine how many AVS members own a BD player, made sure to throw out 1/3 (256) of those votes. Those votes are in the final category for also owning a HD DVD player.
