View Full Version : Offtopic: is it me, or are the Pom Poms out in full effect in the regular sub forum?
crackyflipside 03-28-07, 12:03 PM Wow, Steve, I didn't know you were into lifting and I didn't know you were an amatuer boxer! These offtopic threads are great.
18yrs 5'7" 170lbs
Bench max- 300lbs
Lat pulldown- 300lbs x 3
Overhead press- 200lbs x 3
Squat- 350lb x 10 (not my strongpoint)
Used to be real big into boxing and MMA training, now just lifting.
This is a great thread........ :D

ssabripo 03-28-07, 12:09 PM chris man, stop lying dude....I know you aint lifting no 300lbs man! c'mon! :D
SteveCallas 03-28-07, 12:09 PM Exocer, I know that for football, powerlifting, and perhaps some other high school sports they encourage or track one rep maxes, but if possible, I'd definitely try to stay away from them. I did my 340 bench senior year at ~195lbs and haven't attempted a one rep bench max since, it's just too dangerous in my opinion. Something like a 3 or 4 rep calculated max is much safer on the joints - just a tip.
Oh, and I'm not the amatuer boxer, Sherv is.

I agree with you....at this point, my age is catching up sadly enough. I dont go heavy much anymore. I stay at 225 (two plates) and do a few sets of 6-8reps each, sandwiched in between sets of 185lbs of 15 reps. I just can't recover anymore from injuries like I used to. Last time I went heavy I pinched a nerve and it took me months to get into the gym. :(
I still hit the speed bag and punching bag on occasion though :D

SteveCallas 03-28-07, 12:29 PM That's "Touchdown Bundy", get it right.
kgveteran 03-28-07, 12:30 PM I disagree. We've been molded, trained, brainwashed since birth to THINK that when we grow, we MUST get married and have kids. What about being married to someone for the reason you WANT to be together and not look at the lady as just a baby machine? Kids are an option, not a REQUIREMENT. I can't stand parents judging other married couples who don't have kids as selfish. HOW? If a couple are willing to give up many "single" freedoms for being together, how is that selfish? Just as a married couple judging another couple not having kids is wrong, I have the same right to say having kids is wrong. Get the point? Why do you (plural) have kids? Do you do it because YOU want to, or society EXPECTS it. Family from both sides, friends, co-workers and anybody else are EXPECTING! Do you give in to pressure, or you sincerely desire to have kids. IOW, have kids because YOU want to and nothing and no one else.
OK, I had to vent and I'd like to back the subject of POM POMS.
"The doctor will see you now"
Well the nerds prevail because they were the ones being persecuted. I'm not going to gather my former teamates and trash Sherv's or Willd's house because they overclock their computers :D Good movie by the way.
I don't know why you keep bringing me up. I guarantee you I've spent less on my computer than almost anyone here, including you. The CPU I have cost $60 at the time, and is close to 5 years old.
You, on the other hand, purchased a Nintendo Wii solely to play Zelda. :o
Lets be real here, k?
:D
kgveteran 03-28-07, 12:32 PM Getting married is not about having kids. It is about a life time commitment to each other. It means each party is willing to bring 100% to the table.
Having children is (traditionally, and IMO supposed to be) an extension of the marriage. The man and woman want to take that commitment and apply it to rearing children.
Both marriage and children require a selfless attitude about one's spouse and children. Once a person is willing to put one's spouse and children ahead of his/her own selfish needs and wants, it changes that person.
I cannot imagine my world without my wife and children. My wife is a full time homemaker, who gave up a succesful career as an attorney for something more important. That was selfless.
I handle everything financial for my wife and children, and I am pretty sure she appreciates it. There has never, in our 18 years, been a time when either of us resented the other for our respective roles regarding what we being to the relationship, meaning I never have felt she was lacking because she did not bring in a paycheck, and she never gives me a hint of guilt over the fact that she handles 98% of the household chores.
Ok ... soapbox done. :)

Because you said this:
I know that Rob used to (or still does) and I have been OCing for years now. Started out with my lowly Slot-A Athlon that I took from 750 to ~900 or 950 using a goldfinger device. I now only have a 1700+ OCed from 1.447GHz to ~2.01GHz.
I'm using a Compaq Presario 5000 that I bought senior year in high school - works fine, does everything I need. I find the practice of overclocking nerdy, feel free to ignore my childish statements.
You, on the other hand, purchased a Nintendo Wii solely to play Zelda.
Yeah, and it was a disappointment :( The good news is that I sold it for a profit before Christmas  I'm not saying playing video games is nerdy - in 10 years or so, I foresee the majority of Americans of all ages enjoying some form of electronic gaming.

And some find the idea of massive sonosubs in an apartment to be crazy...:D
Look, if changing a few parameters (which takes all of 15 seconds) to give me close to 40% more performance makes me a nerd, then so be it. But, IMO, it doesn't make me nerdier than you. I just like getting more performance for my money with minimal effort...because hey, I'd be dumb if I didn't.
Where have I heard that before? ;)

foamfan 03-28-07, 04:40 PM Nerds rule.... in the long run.
Are you cool by having the latest & (supposedly) the greatest or do you HAVE the greatest (since you seek the knowledge and have the audacity or money to build it). I'm sure that there are a lot of people here who can afford to buy whatever the latest gizmo there is but choose or aspire to build something better.
Nerd, As defined:
1. A person who gains pleasure from amassing large quantities of knowledge about subjects [subwoofer design and construction] often too detailed or complicated for most other people to be bothered with.
Often mistaken for Geeks, who aspire to become nerds, yet lack the intelligence, and end up giving nerds a bad name due to their poor social skills. [folks who purchase commercial subs and attempt to justify their costly purchase by claiming they are superior]
Non-nerds are often scared of nerds, due to their detailed knowledge, and therefore seemingly high levels of intelligence [and mad skillz with subwoofer design] - and subsequently denegrate them as much as possible as often as possible. [Because these massive sonotube structures generate a TON of bass]
Nerds exist covertly within the fabric of society, often choosing to 'nerd it up' in private or in the company of fellow nerds. [AKA AVS DIY Speakers And Subs forum] It is for this reason they are feared the most [by folks in other forums] - unlike geeks, who are easily identified, nerds can only be found out when casual conversation reaches a subject that they like nerding. [such as speaker enclosure design]

I will be watching. A thread in my honor...die! Not so fast,I finally decide to go cheap! Yes shame on me ...TC Sounds has the TC-3000 15" drivers in stock,I will order two and build a sub very similar to Kramskoi.

Definitely a better choice than a single TC-5200 in my book.
SteveCallas 03-28-07, 09:48 PM Take a big step up the ladder and just go LLT from the start.

Take a big step up the ladder and just go LLT from the start.
I though LLT was the last thing The Ear would want to do. I thought the point was to make subs comparable in size to commercial offerings but with better performance for less money???
OT and on topic at the same time.
The sealed VS ported debate in the commercial sub section looks like a good debate.
Yes this section of the sub forums has much more promise and reward. This is where I sarted lurking.
Yes the TC-3000 woofers will do just fine, with almost 100lbs for both drivers and the cabinet will weigh from 120-140lbs with the wall thickness/bracing I want it should be a heavy customer. Each side (opposed drivers ) will be sloped, four glued MDF sheets cut to size.
Should look good too.

The god thing, if you believe it, is an invisible being. As I was TRAINED to believe exists. Now your going DIY and you don't HAVE to prove anything, but with a claim of 30 subs..why not show them off? We have people building card board boxes and can't wait to show them. Even those with commercial subs for that matter.
You may not care, but credibility will gain you respect and take you more seriously. You don't have to post ALL of them, but at least 29! :D Besides, we're fanatic about subs. We'd love to see more. It's never enough!

you mean to tell me you aint never heard of this clip all over the interwebz?
Vitod,
Agreed
Now a few of the subs I have are...how can I put it...not audiophile approved, and I may become laughing stock after.
The tops subs being f113,SW12 and HGS18,Servo 15 v.2 and B155 it goes downhill from there. With the numbers generated by serious DIY subs.No longer impressive to have so many poorly performing subs. :o
This is why I am starting,or really comming back to DIY. To think about it,the sub I will build will be similar to Kramskoi's dual driver sub,and it spanks the f113. Larger sure bot offers so much performance, and great extension ...below any of my current subs.
One thing I can do,when I will redo the floors this summer(and have to move my gear around) during my two week vaccation. In the larger room(living/audio room)I will make a nice pile of ALL the subs(laughing stock and serious)and take low to high rez pics to show on AVS....
I will not take pics of my mess,or post closeups that could come from anywhere.

SteveCallas 03-29-07, 10:48 AM Here Mr Callas was found
Pudzianowski is more juiced than a race horse. Most of these foreign competitors have very lax performance enhancing drug laws, and when they are the pride of that country, it's even easier for them to acquire the gear. Strongman competitions don't do any testing, yet in America that stuff is illegal, so it often puts the Americans at a disadvantage, not that they aren't plenty of Americans who go ahead and juice anyway.
nothing better than power, speed, timing, and accuracy
Boxing is on its way out, MMA is on a speedy rise to the top. It's hard to sit through a boxing match nowadays - high likelihood it's fixed, usually dull, and being limited to just punching seems antiquated.
As for Van Damme, yeah he's a goofball, but he gets a pass. Bloodsport, Kickboxer, and Lion Heart are all films I am proud to have on my dvd rack (and No Retreat No Surrender on my VHS rack ;) ).

Finally. We've made progress. I'm looking foward now in seeing them all. Thanks. BTW, don't belittle your "lesser" subs.....unless you have a Bose "bass module". Please say you DON'T have it.
Side note: This may have been covered, but when you received your F113, your fanboyism was nauseating. I'm so glad you cooled down and have come to the DARK SIDE!! :D

Talking about juiced,Americans use newer and better juice, that cannot be detected at the moment. The worst cases of juicing are the Chinese female weightlifters and swimming team. You take a blood sample you would swear it was blood diluted in juice. :p
Boxing on its way out,not a chance. Boxing is here to stay, just because a few fixes are onbvious it does not make boxing bad.Fixes are in every sport and level. Some are just better executed.
Ultimate fighting and any MMA fight will entertain more the general public.Boxing dull...please what fights have you watched. Any time you have two solid fighters with skill it is never dull. Unless you want to see blood piss and see two brawlers throw punches in bunches.

No I was never a fan of a one notey bass module containing two $5 6" drivers.
My most ..lowly sub is a Cerwin Vega CLSC-15(if I remember) Good and potent to 28Hz and drops like a stone from there.

LOL....what fights are YOU watching?? let me guess: fridaynightfights on ESPN2 :p
MMA is just a flavor of the decade....just like wrestling before, just like something else in the future. But there is nothing that comes close to the sweet science! You know, just like arguing about "football" vs "Soccer"..... There is a reason why the world watches and is passionate about futbol. There is a reason why boxing has always been and will always be the ultimate showcase of fighting skills: technique, strength, power, speed, and most importantly, ring smarts and planning.
Go rent fights like Gatti-Ward, Corrales-Castillo, Barrera-Morales, Trinidad-Vargas, Marquez-Vasquez, etc, etc.....and tell me if you are not in the seat of your pants and in pure awe of the heart, skill, bravery, and mental intelligence in the ring.
ps- Ear, I'm glad you at least see boxing in a good light...at least that's showing progress. But no, Jones is not my idol, and HELL NO, tarver was not the cause....he was at the right place at the right time when father time caught up with Roy. 3 years earlier and Milkdud head would have been just another statistic in Roy's career.

ssabripo,
Boxing is THE sport I watch each time I get a chance, nothing like a classic Holyfield fight, where the smaller man but more skilled man beats up a larger heavy. And Holyfield was unstoppable or close to at cruiserweight.
And I agree what is called soccer in the US...is really FOOTBALL.And is THE most exciting sport on the planet. When Italy was facing Germany and then France each second was edge of you seat moment.
And the two blitz goals against Germany in the last two minutes...amazing! The cheers exploded louder than any sub can(in the bar where I was watching). Plus the faces of the German fans...LOL priceless! :D
Yes,I cannot disagree boxing and football(called soccer buy a minority)are just a cut above.

I could never watch a full game of soccer... now rugby on the other hand  :D
SteveCallas 03-29-07, 12:06 PM Rather than spending any time debating the obvious decline in boxing popularity and rise in MMA, I'll simply suggest we sit back and watch what happens over the next couple years. If you are convinced MMA is a flash in the pan, we'll see.
As for soccer vs football, that's a joke. The rest of the world prefers soccer because they are wim......no, better yet, nerds.

exactly...no need to argue when the outcome is not known for sure. Although my money is on the sweet science ;)

I agree. The last 2 World Cup games were nerve racking! Very intense! You have to admit, the Italians were moving that ball as if it were remote controlled! Passing, passing, passing! The Germans should've been at the finals with Italy. France?

SteveCallas 03-29-07, 12:28 PM So anybody seen the specs and pricing on the new Mach5 Audio 18"? Thomas posted some info here (http://www.htguide.com/forum/showthread.php4?t=25487). While the price says "budget", the specs look very nice. It still amazes me how there was really only one suitable high excursion >12" driver a year and a half ago and now in the 18" department alone, we have several choices. Did SS just take a Vince McMahon-esque gulp of fear?
fretman4god 03-29-07, 12:28 PM How is MMA a fad like wrestling? (I'm assuming you meant WWF -style[playfighting]) UFC and he like are much more involved. Punch, punch, block, duck, jab(and a good bit of strategy and planning I'll easily admit)=boxing...sweep, kick, jab, takedown, jab(x19), fight for control, think, plan, wear your opponent down, elbow, arm bar, adjust, etc..=UFC. Which requires more thought? (I know I left out steps on boxing, but I couldn't think of any others) Sweet science is clearly evident in both of these. heck, maybe I'm just so into UFC cause I'm a wrestler (high school and some college). I've boxed around with some boxer friends, and I just get so bored and wonder when it's gonna be interesting. Wrestling and MMA keeps you on your toes. I would think that you would have to be faster in wrestling (one can move their foot away faster than their head). I would love some insight into the mind of a boxer in a fight. What were you thinking during your fights?

sniff, sniff, thanks for bringing back that incredible, stupendous, marvelous, time in WC history. It's the greatest 3 mins in ALL of sports! Amazing!

As in boxing, would be hard to find one boxer who came from a rich family and made a mark. In any combat sport the best fighters often come from places where life is rough and you have little to lose. This hardens a man and conditions for what will come.
Since we are in sports....
One of the most impressive athletes in the history of the olympics is Alexander Karelin(wrestling, the real deal...not circus one),he is a living legend and icon.During many years of international competition no opponent could even score a single point against him!

i saw that.....i'm gonna wait for judgement till its on someone's hand and measured. I'm also waiting to see how the RP-L18 pans out, but it has a VERY attractive set of specs at a phenomenal price point.
Wierd that only a couple of years ago the AV15 was a "top dog", and then SS came out with their stuff, tumults were common-place, and now a buncha 18's are popping left and right.
hey, I aint complaining....
I am looking forward to the 21"ers and maybe even 24s. ;)

Well, not entirely true. American Rulon Gardner beat him in the 2000 Olympics.

I dont doubt that perhaps even larger woofers may become popular, but there will have to be dramatic changes in customer paradigms (as you can see, the trend is going smaller in size, not bigger....a 21" woofer aint gonna fit in no 3.6cu. ft enclosure no matter how you cut it), as well as motor technology, cone surrounds, voicecoils, and many other parts of the driver to keep response time and SQ in check.

No doubt, we are not ready for them yet. But, who knows what the future holds? A 21 or 24 could be one killer driver!
Gir_1337 03-29-07, 01:12 PM I think I'm gonna put a pre-order on the new Mach 5 18"er. My neighboors will love it : )

Speak for yourself :D We can't let men who hide behind their wives' stockings to bring a sub into their home theater dictate driver advancements.

I will chime in here with some sub par subs pardon the pun. I have 5 Audio Source subs. They have served their purpose well for a number of years. And the 15 inch boxes are now gutted and playing host to DD Audio 3515 drivers which are working very well as front subwoofers to augment the very low range rear IB. So well I had to remove one from the room due to WNAF (Wife Non Acceptance Factor).
The 8 inchers are cooking along fine as midbass modules for the surrounds and rears. One box now houses an eD 8 inch driver for the midbass of the center. Everything is beginning to blend nicely.
I will be upsetting the applecart so to speak when the 4 new Mach5 18 inchers show up in a few months.
Proud owner of sub subwoofers.

The price is ridiculous and the specs look very nice.

By scoring ONE POINT ,and Karelin was no longer in his prime. I want to see Rulon acomplish what karelin has...not even close.
Rulon will have to dominate for 9 years so cleanly and many years without anyone scoring a single point against him. Then we can compare Rulon to Karelin.

Since this is an off-topic tread....
I'm getting two Rlp 15 D2 in two seperate vented boxes tuned to 17hz and I currently have an EP2500. Should I feed 750wpc at 4ohms to each driver or bridged and get another EP2500. I think that's excessive.

Sweet, now if we can only get TC Sounds to make one!
What about this monster!

"The enclosure is about 21 cu.ft. altogether... which really isn't that large, when you consider it is equivalent to 49 ten inch subwoofers. It measures 4 feet wide, by 3 feet tall, by 2 feet deep. "

I'd like to see the frequency range. Given it's a pro audio subwoofer I'd be surprised to see it go to even 25 Hz. Maybe I'll be surprised. :)

Range... 35Hz up,-10dB at 32hz or so. Not much depth here,I guessed...you free one of duty below 50Hz and you have a giant MBM. To complement ssabripo's twin towers of abyss like depth.
It is a direct radiating bass bin. Specified max SPL 135dB,the horn loaded units with smaller(18")woofers can hit over 140dB. Not anything over 130dB in this range would be of use in even a large room, permanent hearing damage would be the end result.

How bout this bad boy. One word....... 369lbs
http://www.mtx.com/caraudio/products/subwoofers/jackHammer.cfm
TheMTX Jackhammer is a giant freak show, the asking price and weight make it one heck of a freak show.A driver up to 100lbs is ok,but...close to 400lbs...
Plus from what I have heard it does not perform to its asking price. You better take a dozen TC-3000 at the price they go for have change left to buy massive power from Crown.Just IMO and I think shared by a few.

You might not feel such and urge for this purchase if you did a search of pro-audio subwoofers. There have been 21" drivers on the market for years. Turbosound was probably one of the earlier ones. There are at least 3, probably more than 6 companies that offer 21" drivers. Most all have less than 10mm Xmax. The upcoming B&C 21" is the only exception with 15mm. They're cool drivers, and they fit that surface area in a different package than the equivalent surface area of a pair of 15s, but with the current 15" offerings on the market, you'll likely get better performance from 15s, and most certainly you will get more deep bass from the 15s.
More surface area/motor is useful in allowing an *opportunity* (not certainty) for greater efficiency and output if you are willing to use a bigger box size per desired cut-off. With power so reasonable in cost these days and excursion capabilities very high, unless you have an application that needs modest motor strength and power handling, woofers larger than 18" will be best suited to IB use, big midbass boxes, and bragging rights for those who want the largest woofer.
I also hope that many remember that pro audio specs can be very creatively derived, and many that might look interesting on paper sound like total garbage. There are certainly some great sounding pro subs out there, but they are the minority, not the majority, and often not from the more visible brands.
Mark,
Point taken, however I am interested in this bass bin as a curiosity, not a great performer(SQ or SPL down deep). And with -10dB at 32Hz...the Submersive or Fathom is not in danger.
So getting for the hell of it.
BTW, I pre-ordered two of the IXL-18.4 from Mach5 audio. What have I done!

You know I still haven't built my IB manifolds yet, my original plan was to make 2 cutouts on two seperate manifolds that could be upgradeable to other 18's. I think I'll give it space to house 4 drivers on each manifold for a total of 8...
That will be alot of bass when finished!
