View Full Version : USB to Ethernet adapter working with Wii.. tested tonight!
jhuehne 12-13-06, 11:29 PM I read a thread somewhere saying that the Kinamax NT-USB20 usb to ethernet adapter was compatible with the Wii. I found one online for around $18 with shipping right about $25 and ordered it up.
It arrived today and I got a chance to try it. The adaper is black in color and is about 3 inches long. There is a light for link and for 100meg speed. The lights blink when activity occurs.
I plugged the adapter into the back of the Wii on one of the USB ports. I didn't seem to see any lights show up, so I turned off my Wii and powered it back on. The lights came on and I got a link light shortly after. I had this wired to my Ethernet switch in the basement via the walljack behind my entertainment center.
I went into the Wii setup menu and went into Internet options. I already have wireless configured to my a/b/g linksys router. I added a wired connection as Internet option 2 and selected it. It did a quick test to verify connectivity and I was able to use the Ethernet connection.
I tried some basic navigation of the Wii Shopping Channel and it did seem noticably faster than the wireless connection I was using. I haven't downloaded any games yet over the Ethernet for comparison but navigation and the initial Internet connection did seem faster to me.
The package comes with the 3 inch USB to Ethernet black dongle as well as a USB extension cable. I believe this is the same price as the Nintendo version that will be available sometime in January from what I have read.
I'm impressed with what I've seen so far and I would recommend getting this adapter for anyone with Ethernet options where they use their Wii.
Gamedev123 12-14-06, 07:41 AM Thanks for the info!
jhuehne 12-14-06, 11:05 AM I had a typo in the original message I just corrected. The correct brand name is Kinamax not Kinemax like I had in the original post.
Here is a link to the product:

jhuehne 12-15-06, 12:30 PM Here is a video showing the use of the USB adapter I purchased:

I didn't make the video but you can see what it looks like and that it works.
Goatspeed 12-15-06, 03:00 PM Just ordered one from your site. If it only runs a 10/half I'm sueing.
dagware 12-27-06, 08:36 PM FYI, I ordered this from Newegg and they sent me a different adapter, even though the packing list says they sent what I ordered. They sent a generic USB ethernet adapter, and it doesn't work with the Wii.
So be careful where you order it!

If you install this adapter on a pc. Does it enable ics? Was wondering if this would work for my DS.

Yeah, it ticked me off. I'll bet there's somewhere on their site where they say they may substitute a similar brand for items ordered. But even still...
I just ordered from the Ayagroup web site. Their description of the product specifically mentions that it works on the Wii, so I'm willing to bet they won't substitute something else. Or at least I hope not.

I am assuming you are sending this back and have contacted newegg.com? Others have ordered from them and received the Kinamax adapter. I do not see why they would purposely send you something you did not order. I am sure this was a mistake on their part and would correct their mistake if you call them on the telephone.

Never assume anything. :p Yes, I should contact them about this. However, for $25 I may just eat it. We'll see if my general laziness will win out here.

ButteroJ 12-29-06, 11:34 AM Now that they know it works w/ the Wii its $29 at AYA
dagware 12-29-06, 11:56 AM Well, I just found out that I must have entered my credit card info wrong for the order with Ayagroup, so I cancelled it and called Newegg about my incorrect order. They don't know why the correct model didn't get sent -- the CSR said they don't substitute items so it must just have been a mistake. They're shipping me the correct adapter (we'll see if they get it right this time ) and they told me to just keep the other adapter because it wasn't worth it to them for me to return it.
So I guess I'm glad I fat-fingered my drecit card info incorrectly.

thedream14 12-29-06, 01:29 PM I just found this thread today, or I would have ordered this weeks ago, why Nintendo would not have their own version ready at launch (much like their component cables) mystifies me.
Anyway, I did not want to take the chance of being randomly burned by a replacement adapter so I called Ayagroup directly to order. Their number is 626-573-3764. I spoke to a guy named Kurp, no joke, who definitely knew about the unique functionality that only this adapter has with the Wii. He assured me I would be sent the correct adapter. One other thing, he mentioned they have 80 of these adpaters in inventory, as of 12/29, and he has no idea when replacements will arrive once the current inventory is gone.
Price was $29 plus $8 for UPS ground (3-4 business days). This isn't much more than Ninitendo's version, but who the hell knows when that will actually be available. This product really seems to work based on the video above.

That's the guy I spok with when I cancelled my order. I wonder if this place is a mom-and-pop store? Anyway, when I called him and told him my name, he knew about the problem with the credit card without even having to look something up on the computer. So even though I cancelled my order, I like a place with that kind of service.

Chickennog 12-29-06, 04:08 PM I just ordered a Linksys 10/100 USB adapter from CompUSA and I'm going to pick it up after work. Has anyone heard one way or the other if this particular adapter will work with the Wii?
CompUSA lists it as: Linksys EtherFast 10/100 USB Network Adapter
Sorry I can't post the link, I haven't hit 5 posts yet.

The only one I've ever heard of working with the Wii is the Kinamax mentioned in this thread. And I'm guessing that this is actually what Nintendo is going to sell, repackaged of course. I'm even thinking that whoever was the first person to try this adapter and post somewhere that it works, probably had some "inside" knowledge of this, and that's why they tried the adapter in the first place.
But I'm not a conspiracy theorist or anything.

There are about 3 or 4 reviews on newegg's site indicating you were not the only one to be sent the wrong item. How the heck can they screw up multiple orders? I want to order this from them but do not want the hassle with them sending me something I did not order. This item was out of stock for a short time so someone at newegg may have been trying to send out a similar item not knowing what it was intended for in terms of use.

Probably won't work. USB200M which has the same ASIX chipset but different hardware id string is confirmed not to work. Airlink ASOHOUSB is also confirmed to work.
Post confirming the Airlink works from the thread that broke the news that Kinamax works.

I asked about that possibility, and the CSR that I spoke with said something about there not being technical people there who could say what could be substituted for what, so she said they don't substitute. But something certainly did happen.

I'm glad I held off. For a change, waiting paid off. If I would have ordered last week I would be in your boat with newegg sending me something I did not order. Not only that but I saved about $6.00.

It's really not that bad. I just have to wait a little. But it doesn't really matter -- I'll get the adapter eventually and hook it up, test it out and say "cool!" Then it will be as though nothing has changed, since there really isn't much to do on-line yet.

Did I read somewhere once you hook up online your machine receives an update which also updates the system's ability to utilize various SD cards? I thought I would be able to transfer saves from my wii system to an SD card but the option to select the SD card does not pop up under memory management. Is the SD card only for downloading from the internet?
jhuehne 01-01-07, 09:45 AM I can answer this one because I ran into it myself. I was trying to move over saves from my Wii to my sister-in-law's Wii we gave her for xmas. Her unit out of the box was unable to use the sd card out of my unit.
I put her unit on the wireless and it took multiple updates before the SD card slot was recognized for data management.
My understanding is you can have virtual console games, save games, pictures, movies and audio files on the sd cards. I have not really played with mine other than backing up save games.

Excellent...thanks alot!!!! This will really help out my son who is playing Zelda and has to bring his Wii over to my place in order to play his game without starting all over again. I will update his machine also once I receive my adapter from Fry's.
ayagroupdotcom 01-03-07, 05:10 AM Hello All,
This is Ayagroup and yes, we only have a limited supply of this item in stock. Eversince our vendor discovered that this item works with Wii; our cost has increased, but still, we've decided to buy all of their inventory.
Before the discovery of Wii compatibility, we sold it at $18.95 UNTIL the vendor decided to mark up the item. Believe me, we are not making much off this unit. We are currently sourcing for a manufacturer in Asia to supply us with this EXACT unit (originally made there) so we can continue to offer it.
In any case, Nintendo will release their own this month.
I want to say is THANK YOU for you continued support and hope to earn more of your business in the near future.
Ayagroup have been offering IT service to corporate/academic customers for over 7 years and have started to expand our product line to end-users. We currently have over 100,000 items in stock! Depending on your profile, you're directed to a certain account rep. so WE KEEP IT PERSONAL.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
tryingtimes 01-03-07, 11:12 AM Hi Ayagroup
Do you ship to the UK?
dagware 01-03-07, 11:37 AM My saga with Newegg continues. As you may recall, they sent out the wrong adapter last week. When I called, they shipped out a new one. I got the package yesterday, and ..... wait for it ..... it contains the same wrong adapter. Wonderful.
I'm giving up at this point. I'll keep using the wireless for now, and once Nintendo comes out with their official adapter, I'll make a decision what to do. For now, I have two USB wired network adapters that will probably never be used for anything. Poor little things...

Tks!
I also just received the wrong adapter from Newegg. Returning and ordering the one from ayagroup.

I sent it back today for a full refund. I had to pay for shipping, but the guy told me I could call back after they received the package, and they would refund my card up to $10 for shipping. We'll see how that goes.
BTW, Newegg sent me some piece of crap. The box didn't even have a brand name marked anywhere. The guy couldn't even try to find it in his system because there were no distinct markings on the product box or in it to even say what make/model it was. All the box said was "USB 2.0 10/100 fast ethernet adapter" and "Made in China".
Teamhood 01-04-07, 04:56 PM I placed my order from ayagroup as well. Looks like they are lucky as hell to have an adapter that works :) congrats to you
Teamhood 01-04-07, 04:57 PM I also want to add: that I ordered the my adapter and in about 30 minutes received an email with my UPS tracking number... I love FAST service!!

dagware 01-04-07, 08:07 PM I just received the following reply from Newegg:
Dear Customer,
Thank you for contacting Newegg.
I do apologize for the inconvenience. It seems it was a mistake on our fault. A description error report was filed and we no longer carry that item. I would be more than happy to issure an RMA for a refund.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please visit our FAQs page.
Thank you,
<CSR Name>
I'm obviously going to take them up on the RMA. But I want to bitch about a couple more things, just to get them off my chest.
1) "Dear Customer" -- The CSR obviously knew my name, why not address me by name? "Dear Customer" is so sterile. Not a good way to make a customer feel appreciated.
2) "It seems it was a mistake on our fault" -- What's a mistake on a fault? Is that where two wrongs make a right, and it's actually OK? Or are they located above an earthquake fault line? OK, I know this is picking nits, but come on, if you're dealing with customers, you ought to be able to construct a sentence correctly.
Thanks, I feel better now.

ayagroupdotcom 03-02-07, 08:18 PM Hello there,
It's unfortunate that we can't get the Kinamax brand anymore, it was a hot seller for us. Made possible from customers like you on this forum. THANK YOU.
But if this Airlink unit gets strong, positive feedback, we will have always have inventory. We've ordered 100pcs not knowing for sure it works but the manufacturer states that it is exactly the same ones sold to Fry's Electronics, same exact chipset. And we can get more every month.
Hooray, 5 posts ... here are some info.

EALMEIDA 03-03-07, 06:01 AM Hi AyaGroup,
At this time I'm probably late, I suppose you already got many more than 5 interested testers ... anyway ...
I was fortunate enough to see your message at AVS Forum ! I ordered 5 Kinamax last month from you (order # 685) and since then it's has been tremendously hard to find more units. I'm prety sure this Airlink adapter will do very well with Nintendo Wii since the chipset is the same, so I'm ordering 5 again. It's unfortunate that shipping to Brazil is so expensive because many people have been coming to me looking to put their Wii's on internet via cable, but my friend in Florida will bring these 5 units to me in Brazil next wednesday - since you ship so fast I hope 2day shipping is enought to get there on tuedasy.
By now probably more than 5 people have asked their units, so I suppose I'm out of the free shipped unit. Anyway, I'm pretty sure this will sell very well here in Brazil too, so I'll be coming back to buy many more in the next months.
I will also post my feedback here about these AirLink adapters, and those I get from my customers, and also post to our brazilian forums. And will gladly leave a Review at your product page after having tested it enough - I hope I'll be puting my hands on these units by the middle of this week !
Best regards, and thaks a lot for your support to the community !

ayagroupdotcom 03-04-07, 08:21 PM Hello All,
Couple of users weren't able to getted in working. It could be that those two units were defective because both users states the both LED lights (Power and Link) on the lan adapters does not light up. More testing needs to be conducted and we will have to contact the manufacturer. One error message was "lan adapter is not inserted properly".
Please do not order this as of yet just for using it with Wii. For those who've ordered; we will gladly accept returns. We will also pay for the shipping back to us and issue you a full refund.
We apologize for this inconvenience; any help would be appreciated.

that is the same exact thing that happened to me when i tried to use a linksys usb200m v2. although it is the same chipset, the vid/pid is different. the lights did not come on and the wii returned the error stating "LAN adapter is not inserted properly".
if the airlink adapter gets here early enough in the week, i can check out some things. i have not yet updated to the newest "enable voting channel" firmware yet, which i have heard rumors that it might disable 3rd party adapters. i will post my findings on it before and after the update, as well as the chipset and vid/pid. i will be out of town later on in the week, so i will have it up next week at the latest.

I am just waiting for these Airlink devices to arrive to post my tests results.
Best regards,
Eduardo
I know theres the Wii Lan Adapter out but dont really want to pay 30 dollars for it. Is there anything I can use that maybe could be less than 10?
If Ayagroup is still needing testers, I would mind! :p
Sunkist 03-06-07, 09:36 PM I was at Best Buy today and they sell a USB ethernet adapter for the Wii now. It is not the Nintendo brand one but I think it was $19 (may have been $29) so not to bad.
the one on the bestbuy website is $29.99 (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8193466&st=wii+lan&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1164157285316).
i have received my adapter and done some preliminary testing before i had run out again. i will make a detailed report tonight. it looks very promising..
manufacturer states that it is exactly the same ones sold to Fry's Electronics, same exact chipset
http://www.ayagroup.com/images/ASOHOUSB_m.JPG (http://www.ayagroup.com/product_info.php?products_id=1771&osCsid=8230b8e69db7ca4adc8aa9917066d02f)
If you do not want to go through the entire review, I will tell you right now that it works!
The first thing I noticed when I opened the package was that there was no manufacturer label anywhere. In the above picture, the adapter is clearly labeled Airlink. This one just says USB on it above the LEDs.
http://img118.imageshack.us/img118/3250/1000386nn9.th.jpg (http://img118.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000386nn9.jpg)
There was no mention of the manufacturer on the back of the packaging or on the back of the adapter. Perhaps its a chinese clone?
http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/7536/1000387oz1.th.jpg (http://img242.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000387oz1.jpg)http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/7718/1000390jw4.th.jpg (http://img242.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000390jw4.jpg)
I plugged it into my PC and it automatically installed under Windows XP:
http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/8688/adapterdriverxl5.th.jpg (http://img167.imageshack.us/my.php?image=adapterdriverxl5.jpg)
As you can see, the VID is 0B95 and PID is 7720, which is the correct hardware ID for Wii compatibility: http://www.wiili.org/index.php/Wii_ethernet_adapter
I plugged the adapter in to the Wii and turned it on. The power LED came on on the adapter. I configured the connection setting to "Wired" and to automatically obtain an IP address. When checking the connection the link LED lit up:
http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/7995/1000395yy1.th.jpg (http://img213.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000395yy1.jpg)http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/8883/1000397wk1.th.jpg (http://img228.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000397wk1.jpg)
Since I had not installed the Voting Channel update and had not downloaded the voting channel, I did that next.
http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/2575/1000399sq0.th.jpg (http://img89.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000399sq0.jpg)http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/5397/1000404oz5.th.jpg (http://img213.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1000404oz5.jpg)
I have not downloaded that much, but the update and channel seemed to download a lot quicker than previous ones. I then played around with the Voting channel to confirm that data was still being sent.
Something else I noticed was that the power LED and the link LED turn off when the network isn't being accessed. When the Wii tries to update info or connect to the network, it has to initiate the adapter every time. This includes switching between menus and the channels.
Bottom line: This adapter has the same chipset and hardware ID as the other 3rd party adapters known to work. I would recommend Ayagroup as a source of Wii compatible network adapters.
ayagroupdotcom 03-07-07, 09:45 PM Awesome!!! Thank you Bgnome; that is very good news.
The manufacturer told us they are not allow to put their name on the item so they changed their packaging.
This is their old packaging:

This is where we bought it from ... http://www.airlink101.com/products/asohousb.html

I wonder why? Do you know? If you can't comment on this particular manufacturer, then perhaps you could give some general reasons why a hypothetical manufacturer might have this happen?
Just curious.

I received my unit from Ayagroup today. It was packaged well and I received it quickly. That's great customer service IF I paid for the product. Considering they sent it to me for free makes the service that much better. Thanks, Ayagroup.
The bad news for me is that the unit does not work with my Wii (for now, anyway). I plugged it in and turned the Wii on. Went to Internet connections and set one as wired. Started the connection test, and the lights started flashing on the USB adapter. The connection test failed with a code 52021. The only thing I could find online (from the Nintendo website) was to power cycle the modem and router. Doing both of these didn't help. I even plugged the Wii directly into the modem, and got the same error. In all the connection tests I did, the router and/or modem activity light flashed, as did the lights on the adapter.
I'm going to try and find out more on the problem. It's obvious that the Wii is communicating with the adapter, and the connection is making it through the modem, so I'm not sure that the adapter is the problem.
I have only done about 2 updates from online (soon after launch). My wireless connection works when I have a certain firmware installed on my router. Unfortunately, XBox Live doesn't work with that firmware version, so I use a firmware version that won't work wirelessly with the Wii so I can use XBox Live.
I will post more after I try a few things. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks.

The manufacturer told us that it had to do with some legal issues and our sales rep at AirLink said the packaging will be different but the chipset is the same.
ayagroupdotcom 03-08-07, 11:28 PM PDCL, Did you see the post from Bgnome?
At first I wasn't able to getting it working because the Wii console was about 15ft away from the DSL router and we used a USB extention cable.
Right after, I plugged the network cable directly to the adapter ... it worked!!!

I don't see anything in Bgnome's post that applies to my situation. I plugged the adapter straight into my Wii, then plugged in the network cable in. The other end of the network cable was plugged into my router. Tried switching it directly to the cable modem after power cycling, and got the same error.

Do you have to login to your ISP to get to the internet from your computer(s)? Do you have to launch a program on your computer before you can access the internet in a web browser?
If so, you need to configure your Wii to login to your ISP or setup your router to login to your ISP. My ISP (SBC/Yahoo -> AT&T) requires me to setup a PPPoE connection signon. I configured it into my router so that anything I connect to the router automatically has a connection to the internet.

wrwine3 03-13-07, 07:51 AM I received an adapter from AyaGroup yesterday. My impressions mirror those of BGNOME's earlier post. Hooked it up, tested the connection and did the update. It works flawlessly.
I am a happy camper. Thank you AyaGroup.

wrwine3, thank you for your feedback and participation.
I recieved my adapter from Ayagroup yesterday and at first was a bit sketical if it was going to work but when i did plug it in and waited about 30 seconds for the wii to locate my connection, it said that the connection was found. So basically, I am happy this worked so well. I tried the Wii internet, and I have NO idea how to scroll a page, can anyone help? But anyways, THANK YOU SO MUCH AYAGROUP! It was very prompt shipping and I didnt even pay for it!

IIRC, there's a help page somewhere that can answer your questions -- I *think* it's a button on the opening screen? To answer your specific question, you use the "B" button when you see the blue arrows. You can also use the plus button to zoom in, and the minus button to zoom back out.

And we also have about 100pcs of the Airlink brand as well.
Thank you!
Turbokaw 08-09-07, 12:15 PM So what are the working ones now? Just the Airlink and the Kinamax? thanks,
jhuehne 08-09-07, 01:00 PM My Kinamax still works fine. I know the first party Nintendo adapter also works.
Just as an update. I received the Airlink ASOHOUSB adapter from ayagroupdotcom a while back. I originally said that I could not get it to work. After troubleshooting a little more, I found out that the ethernet cable I was using was bad. Swapped the cable out, and the adapter works fine now.
galve2000 08-12-07, 02:22 PM Looks like the Airlink 101 is now $13.95 from Ayagroup (http://www.ayagroup.com/product.php?productid=1771&cat=0&page=1) for anyone who cares.
havn't posted in a while... feels good..

Just came across this thread. Which adapters still work besides the Nintendo one?
JamezHill 09-28-07, 03:28 AM Heh, I just hooked mine up, works great. I got it on ebay (shipped from Hong Kong). It looks like the real thing but was half the price. It works and that's all I care about :)

I received mine yesterday. Was able to connect & update the Wii without any problems.
RyokoYaksa 01-01-08, 06:07 AM I'm pretty sure that's not useable to connect the Wii to the Internet. As far as I know the Wii must use 802.11g/b wi-fi technology to send/receive internet data. This is only a Bluetooth dongle... the only thing you can really do with it is connect Wiimotes to the computer.
ayagroupdotcom 01-06-08, 05:49 PM Yes, that is a just a bluetooth dongle, I didn't said it worked with Wii. The Kinamax adapter works with Wii.

Leo_Ames 02-10-08, 12:07 AM I don't see the point, whats that do that the free wriststraps from Nintendo don't? Not only that, but it looks ugly and uncomfortable.
I'd be surprised if they sell any.

That is probably the worst thing I have ever seen. Good luck selling that :)
I've been having problems with my nyko usb ethernet plug. It seems that not my Wii works for the first time I connect to the internet with something (wii shopping), but when I exit out and try connecting to something else (wii weather) I get a 051420 ( I believe that's it) error.
I have it connected to a buffalo router with dd-wrt firmware. I don't want to do wireless as my wireless network has been so bad I had to switch my pc back to wired. I think it was my neighbors networks killing mine as it wasn't bad during the day, but awful at night. My xbox and pc work fine, except I seem to have problems pulling IP with my DHCP enabled, so I have everything manually entered.
Any one else have a problem like this?
Has any one bought one of these lately from Ayagroup?

I just got the official one from Nintendo. Works great.
I got one from buy.com Its the Intec version. No light letting me know its on. Accept through my router. Kinda sucks. Works great though and I was online in seconds.
