The Blu-ray drive in the XPS M1710 supports read/write capabilities across CD, DVD and Blu-ray Disc media, said Mark Spier of Dell's peripherals marketing client product group.

One thing Dell really likes about Blu-ray over HD-DVD is how much data Blu-ray, with its optical-scanning feature, can slurp up – up to 50GB of data or theater-quality video on a single piece of media with the M1710 system, he told internetnews.com. "We think it will become the optical drive standard."

I still believe Blu-Ray will succeed as a computer optical format, but HD-DVD will succeed as the home movie format.

I now have the XBOX360 HD-DVD Drive and PS3 with Blu-ray.

I have the XBOX360 HD-DVD connected to a Westinghouse 37" 1080p panel through sVGA running at 1080p for movies and the PS3 connected to the 37W3 with HDMI. All cables used are Monster Cables.

I have tried numerous other cable brands and have connected the XBOX HD-DVD through Monsters' Component cable as well. I feel sVGA for HD-DVD provided the best results.

So far, I prefer Blu-ray DVDs for movies. Neither format generated any of the artifacts many have experienced with cable or satellite HD broadcast. Stuff like blocks, explosion distortions, and motion blurs.

PS. I am about to order the M1710 with Blu-ray shortly. Still waiting for some DELL coupons that may come....
