View Full Version : Hdmi Cable Quality
Are there difference's in hdmi cable quality? I have been looking at a 6 meter length of hdmi to hdmi cable to go between an hd dvd player and my sony vpl hs51 projector , the cables I have been considering are: Audioquest entry level cable at $99, Monster cable 400 series at $145 and Kimber Kable entry level cable at $160. Any wise wisdom or thoughts? Thanks
Marky_Mark896 12-17-06, 04:47 PM Go to monoprice.com and get it there. Much better prices, and the cables work great. I've bought a few from them.
Thanks Marky, I have probably posted this in the wrong area anyway. Thanks for the tip.

agreed. Stay away from all major rip-off brands. Anything sold in stores, is (sadly) not worth money, cable wise that is. There is ZERO advantage to buying a monster brand cable.

The more expensive one uses larger conductors 24AWG compared to 28AWG for the cheaper one. Either will probably work fine for short runs, but I did buy the more expensive one for $17. I was just a little leary of the smaller conductor one. Even the expensive one is inexpensive compared to monster and other brands though, and it works great.

thanks, i think i will go with the 24awg ones.
dknelson 12-29-06, 08:01 AM I just got my Sony KDS 60A2000 a couple of weeks ago. Dish Network came out and changed my system over to the HDTV/DVR box and I'm simply amazed at the picture. They connected it with the RCA cables. I can't imagine the picture getting any better but decided to try the HDMI connection. The prices at CC and Radio Shack blew me away....
I came back here, did a search, found these cables at Monoprice. I just ordered a 6 ft. cable and want to thank everybody here for the recommendations. I still don't see how it can possibly improve on the great picture that I have but at this price, it won't disappoint me so bad if it doesn't. :)
"They connected it with the RCA cables."
I hope not! RCA= composite. I hope you meant to say component. If they used composite (wouldn't be surprised) then you will notice a BIG difference in PQ. Either way HDMI is the best you can get.
Component cables are terminated with RCA connectors also. So, RCA is not = to composite (or audio cables).
dknelson 12-29-06, 05:01 PM Sorry .... I wasn't very clear. They DID use the component connections but they are RCA type connectors. At any rate, the HDMI cable is on the way.
kin0kin 12-29-06, 06:47 PM The monoprice cable is exactly what I bought off ebay...and heck the build quality is no worse than, if not better!, those Philips/RCA HDMI cable found in Walmart which retails for 3-5 times the price.
dknelson 01-17-07, 06:00 PM I did receive my cable from Monoprice and am completely pleased with the cable and their fast shipping. That being said, I can't honestly say that I see any advantages over the picture that I was getting with the component connections. I am not sorry that I bought it. It is a much cleaner install. Maybe a more discriminating viewer can tell the difference but I can't.

Maybe so, but are they an AVS Sponsor?
GeekGirl 01-17-07, 07:50 PM There's a brand new AVS forum just for HDMI. Check out the on-going Monster Cable vs. monoprice.com battle in this thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=786727 The ranting seems to have abated, plenty of good info to read.
