I have never heard of them.

I listened to quite a few youtube videos of them and one had them talking about
how the record label insisted that they record with a producer (they didn't want to because they were convinced no one knew their style but them). And that's when
they hooked up with rock and roll producer John Leckie. They were reluctant to
go that route but both said they were pleased with the result they got from those sessions.
That might be the one to start with (entitled "Rodrigo y Gabriela").

It's an interesting story. And it's almost as entertaining to listen to them talk as it is to listen to them play.
From Mexico City to Dublin. It's a testament to human diversity and the sharing of cultures.
And to think some actually want to build another Berlin Wall alongside the Rio Grande to keep us all separated instead.

It sounds as though your experience is different in Georgia than ours out West.

Great stuff! They are excellent players. I would rate it as pretty traditional Spanish guitar playing. The Metallica/metal connection is there because one of the primary roots of that sort of heavy metal guitar is the playing of Ritchie Blackmore (of Deep Purple) and he was primarily influenced by classical guitar, and that includes a lot of the same roots as Spanish or flamenco guitar. So in a lot of ways all that guitar style stems from the same place. It's evident in the faster passages of what they are doing like the one at 3:00 that Bob points out. Also, its often possible to have major influences that aren't directly apparent in your music- I love 70's funk but you could never tell by what I write!

I'm into these guys- may have to get an album! I'd rather hear them than metal...

(BTW, I just learned my spellcheck knows Metallica but not the word spellcheck :D)

The guys are great! Thanks RW. I'm a former classical guitarist and professional musician also, and I can tell you the guy in particular is a Flemenco guitarist of the highest order. I can tell he's also spent some time listening to Al Dimeola also and gives nothing up to him technique-wise.

The gal is less impressive on a pure guitar mastery level, but her fantastic strumming and rythmic sense is what really makes their sound so propulsive and unique. The disc is on order and The Sultan of Cheap has got me again. You da man, Robert.

Speaking of women "kicking butt on guitar," has anyone heard Maria Zemantauski (www.mariazemantauski.com), who is a professor in New York who I don't think promotes or tours much, but has incredible technique and tone - some classical, some flamenco, and some nuevo-flamenco? Wonderful stuff.

When I read this quote the first thing I thought of was STOMP. If you haven’t seen a live performance from these guys and gals it’s a real treat. They play everything from paper cups to the kitchen sink. I was fortunate to see them in DC at the Warner Theater where the audience really got into their performance. They also incorporate a lot humor into their act as well - mesmerizing and funny stuff.

Rodrigo and Gabriela are really good, they've been big around here for a while now.

I got tickets to see them next Thusday. I think they are great and have been a fan for a while. There current CD is a great deal it comes with a DVD full of cool stuff.
