Sony XBR960 HDMI Issues

I am having problems with my HDMI input on my XBR960.

I recently hooked up a PS3 to my tube via HDMI (using the Sony issued PS3 hdmi cable) and for some reason I am only getting audio. No video. I hooked the cable into my digital comcast box and experienced the same thing (audio, no video) so I have to assume it's the TV. I also hooked the PS3 up to my roomates HD Tube via HDMI and it worked fine so all signs indicate there is something wrong with my XBR HDMI input. Any ideas. I tried power cycling the TV to no avail.

Any help will be appreciated.

I'm confused.

You only get audio when using your 960 with the PS3 and the Sony supplied HDMI cable.

You hook the same cable (from the tv I assume?) to your STB and get the same thing?

Why doesn't the cable come under suspicion?

Did you use the same Sony HDMI cable with your friend's setup?

I may be misunderstanding, but I don't see why the cable can't be the culprit. From your description it seems to me the cable is the common denominator.

You are not the only person out there w/ HDMI issues on a 960. Ditto for me as well. I was using a DVI to HDMI connection from my Moto cable box w/o any problems for months. Then I added an upverting Sony HDMI DVD player to the system utilizing a monoprice.com HDMI switcher. That never really worked perfectly, then the HDMI connection failed completely. I get audio but no video like you and I have not found a solution to the problem.

you change your setting in your PS3? You have to change how your PS3 outputs in order to get the PS3 to display with your HDMI cord. Have to go into the setup and select that in the start menu. I would bet 90% of the HDMI problems are related to peope not knowing to do this with the PS3

In short, I could have the PS3 set for HDMI and operational on our HDTV downstairs only to simply disconnect it, hook it right to my 960, and have it fail (audio but no video). I tested the Moto box to make sure it wasn't the source (ps3), it wasn't. I experienced the same thing when running HDMI from my STB to 960 - audio, no video.

I noticed it has a 2 year manufacturer service contract, anyone know if that'll cover having someone come out and check it out?

I believe your 960 came with a 2 year warranty for the picture tube, 1 year parts and labor.

Note, I had a service guy look at my HDMI problem a few weeks ago and he was stumped. He said he would talk to people back at Sony to see what he could find out. He has not gotten back to me. And after talking to more and more people about this, it seems nobody really understands these HDMI issues. Since I'm no longer under warranty, I'm not going to spend loads of money replacing the HDMI board, etc. I'm just using component connections and I am happy w/ what I have. But if you ever figure out your HDMI issue, can you post your solution(s) here? :)

FWIW, it's seems stupid, but... Have you tried changing your output setting of your PS3? I have a up-converting Oppo DV-970HD and have no problem at 480i, but when I changed the output to 1080i, I get the no video problem.

I remove the HDMI on a regular basis between my cable and my HDMI DVD and I have no problem. Is it bad to switch things in and out of the HDMI slot on my xbr960?

Yes, I have tried every possibly PS3 configuration and output setting. But since I don't have an HDMI input in my receiver, component is the play for me anyhow. It's just upsetting to know my XBR has a faulty HDMI input.

I know that this post is alittle old and I havent been on this board for awhile but just wanted to let you know about my experience with the HDMI connection. I previously posted about this. I would get a green screen whenever I hooked up cable box or DVD player.

I went back and forth with Sony and the repair techs they would send out.
They would tell me it was the HDMI cable, my cable box the DVD player etc. They finally ordered a HDMI connector/board. When this got installed it worked immediately!!!! Thankyou for warranties!!!
