View Full Version : movie and record of the year
Ok people, it's the end of the year and I want to know what's your favorite movie and record this year. Let's try and keep this simple. Don't list 20 cds you bought this year and say how hard it is to pick one. To qualify, each selection is one that is new to you this year but it doesn't have to be released in 2006. Feel free to say why this movie or record stood out above all the rest. I'll start:
Movie: The Departed
Record: "The Black Parade" - My Chemical Romance. I'm not big into emo or fake punk and so I'm new to MCR. Having sampled their last record "Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge" MCR broke away from the typical pop/punk/emo sound. The Black Parade is slick, theatrical, more mature, reckless, and catchy as hell. I'm not up on 70's rock but the glam, grand, arena rock influence of Queen is obvious. TBP is going to do for MCR what "American Idiot" did for Green Day.

Movie of the year - "Apocalypto"
Record of the year - "La Ghriba" by DJ Cheb. Excellent fun Middle East flavored trippy electronic stuff. Reminds me of Banco De Gaya at their best. Still, it's being my ROTY shows how little music I bought this year more than anything.
Honorable Mention to "The Open Door" by Evanescence.
Record
Micheal Franti & Spearhead- Yell Fire!
Movie- Syrianna
Movie: "Casino Royale" (didn't see many 2006 releases yet...)
Record: "3121" by Prince (no kidding; check it out...)
Oh, but the record that I've listened to and enjoyed the most this year, it came out late in 2005: "Aerial" by Kate Bush. She has the best voice in popular music. And much of this album is brilliant.
Pan's Labyrinth for movie of the year. It was as easy pick for me this year! lol

Movie - I'll second "Casino Royale"
Record - "Out Of The Ashes," Jessi Colter comes storming back after the death of Waylon. Hard core country with cellos - I like it.
"Merry Christmas" French about WW1 trench warfare.
If "Downfall" was 2006 - then it.
honourable mention "Water"
music? I gave up, stuck in early90s here..............

Syriana was good, but it was released last year (saw it at Christmas time). DVD was released this year, so I guess it counts for some.
My movie of the year for a LONG time was Brick. But I just saw Babel and Children of Men last night, so right now it's a 3-way tie. Haha. Sorry.
Album of the year is hard. I haven't been able to buy every album I wanted to. But Band of Horses' "Everything All The Time" was probably in my CD player more than any other this year, like Bloc Party and The Stills in years past. Tied would be Kings of Convenience - Riot on an empty street - although it's a 2004 release that I just picked up this year. Silversun Pickups put out a great album this year, as did the Decemberists and Black Angels.

Movie: Night Watch or Broken Trail, Hollywood just didn't cut it this year.
Record: The new John Mayer has gotten a lot of play from me, if he makes a record based a few of his latest tracks like "Vultures" I will take back all the gay jokes :). It's really killer this time around and not sappy.
Gaffo, I'm with you! I pretty much listen to 90's music most of the day at work. I am almost ashamed to admit but I love Hootie and Gin Blossoms and the like. My favorite records of this year though, Either John Mayer Continium or Damien Rice 9 and my favorite movie of the year, I would have to go with Little Miss Sunshine.
Movie of the Year: "Running Scared"
Album of the Year: "Stadium Arcadium" - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Record of the year - "La Ghriba" by DJ Cheb. Excellent fun Middle East flavored trippy electronic stuff. Reminds me of Banco De Gaya at their best. Still, it's being my ROTY shows how little music I bought this year more than anything.
HTCrazy - Check out the TANTRA LOUNGE series. Awesome albums especially volumes 1 and 3.
quote from a recent review...
"...filled with dubby jazz and prog-electro styles paired with Bali'esque South Asian instrumentation and vocals. From the very beginning of the album, tablas and sitars rock steadily with standard jazz instrumentation, transistor turntablism, and dubbed-out-downtempo drum loops...."

Movie of the Year: Mission Impossible 3 was my favorite.
Album of the Year: The Game - Doctor's Advocate.
This is a little embarrasing, but I'm a huge fan of the producer Timbaland and the work he put in on Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado's albums was amazing.

Borat was my favorite movie this year. Haven't laughed like that in a long time.
Mastodon - Blood Mountain or The Mars Volta- Amputechture for favorite record. As one reviewer stated about the Mastodon album: "If this isn't the best metal album released in a decade, then it's one of the best you'll hear this year regardless of genre." I fully agree.

Movie: A Scanner Darkly
Album: The Who - Endless Wire
Herman, Running Scared was by far the sleeper of the year. A guy at work told me about it, I never knew it existed, what a great movie! It's been a while, I may just have to dust it off pretty soon and take it for a spin.

Spyder, finally somebody else that liked Stay. My wife hated it but I really enjoyed it.

I got ripped for liking Stay and saying that there was far more to it than what people thought there was. I particularly enjoyed the imagery and subconscious details. I then got repeatedly vilified for not liking the slow, shallow, and pedantic Brick that followed a month or so later that everyone seemed to find such profound meaning in. To each his/her own, I guess.

I second the noms for Running Scared, I totally forgot about it.
Lol Spyder, I did not like Brick either.
If you have not seen it, I also reccomend Chumscrubber. It's in no way related to Brick, but, some parts still have the same feeling. I am not sure how old it is but I always see it in the stores and pick it up and put it back. I caught it the other night on IFC. I had set the dvr to record it because it was on late, I ended up staying up to watch the whole thing and its been on my mind ever since.
