I have the Sammy HLS 6187W 1080p TV. Im looking at getting a 360 and figure from there the cheapest way to get HD dvd is with the add on drive. I guess the only way to display a 1080p signal with the 360 since is has no HDMI is with the optional VGA cable. I was wondering, if a DLP TV technically cant even show an interlaced picture woud the VGA cable be a waste of money?

My understanding with the sammys are that if you want 1080p with the xbox360/hd dvd add on, you have to use the VGA. I hve also heard that you can use component to connect to your sammy at 1080p but i dunno if the hd dvd will work at 1080p with component. you best bet, if you want 1080p, is to use VGA.

You can use components and your HD dvd for 1080p.
The VGA only comes into play if you want the 360 to upscale regular dvd's which on my hls6187 was a night and day diffrence. The VGA is worth its weight in gold for upscaling regular dvd's with the 360.

When you use the VGA with your 360, do you still have the black bars surrounding the image? I have the same TV as you, Xbox360 and HD DVD drive now, and would love to know before I buy the cable.
Right now I have a mac mini hooked up via VGA and can't stand these stupid black bars.
The 360 can upscale to 1080P over component. Your HLS can input 1080P over component.
But due to copy protection limitations the following limits apply:
component
------------------------
dvd: 480p
hd-dvd: 1080i
games: 1080p
vga
-----------------------
dvd: 1080p
hd-dvd: 1080p
games: 1080p
I've heard 1080i is actually fine for hd-dvd because the content on the disc is 1080 24P. If you think about it 1080i is kinda 1080 30P.

You are talking about changing the OAR (Original Aspect Ratio). Microsoft has been getting several requests to add that ability. You will loose some left and right side of the picture to remove the black bars. Many DVD players just call this Zoom.

I have the 5687w.I recommend the VGA cable highly.Only games and the dashboard will display in 1080p over component.Movies display in 1080i.With VGA you can go 1920x1080, and to me,there is a difference.Just use the p-size feature to get the picture to fill the frame completely.

Where is the "p-size" feature? I own the 360 Media remote that came with my Premium Bundle (Included in the box for pre orders) as well as the 360 Universal Media Remote included w/the HD-DVD drive, and I have no P-Size button. My TV will only adjust the scale of NTSC cable as well as 480i/p. 720p and 1080i are excluded from my TV's internal scaler for OAR changes. Is it your TV remote that allows for this?

The P-size button is on the TV remote. If you get the VGA cable and set it to 1920x1080,your gonna have a black bar all around the frame.Press the P-size button(its below the blue button if you have the same remote I do) and youll see options to stretch it horizontally, and vertically as well as move the picture in each direction.Youll have to move it as you stretch it but It will fit perfectly on the screen.
From what I have read some people get confused by that option and just tap the p-size button repeatedly and think it doesnt work. You have to press the button and select the option you want with the directional pad.
