I have a Samsung HL-S5687. During stand-by (after power off for a few hours), the television makes a slightly audible high pitch sound, kinda like a power supply going bad sound. Once I turn the set to "on", the sound instantly stops. If I unplug the set, the sound stops... once I plug it into a outlet again, it starts immediately.

Does anyone else have this same issue?

Yup, a few people. Bad power supply, get it fixed under warranty (either your extended warranty if youhave one, or 1-800-samsung).

rnick, did you hear about any specifics about the powersupply? one place is stating I need the lightengine replaced which sounds inaccurate to me.

i bought an hl-s5087w a week or so ago. it too, made a high-pitched noise when off. like your tv, the noise disappeared when the set was turned on or unplugged.

upon further examination, the noise seemed be originating from the back right side of the unit. my wife could hear it, too. we both found it very annoying and distracting.

i went ahead and exchanged that set for an identical model to see if the noise was an anomaly. unfortunately, the new set makes the same noise as well. given that two different sets did it, i wonder if it's normal/common to the the hl-s line.

also, i discovered by accident that i can "oscillate" the noise by pressing a button on the remote with the tv off. when i hold down a button, the pitch of the noise changes. when i release it, the noise changes back to "normal". does your set exhibit this behavior as well?

found another person with the same thing here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/customer-reviews/B000F2R5HO/ref=cm_cr_dp_pt/105-5703562-1984455?ie=UTF8&n=172282&s=electronics

part of their review states: "I don't like the high pitched sound that comes out the back when the TV is off. Very noticeable though! (and no, not the fan when on) "

it seems more and more that this noise is inherent to the set. even so, i'm not sure i want to deal with it. i will wait a bit and see, but i still may end up returning it for another brand if it continues to be so noticeable.

The high pitched sound went away for a day, then returned. In general, the television is quite good; I will call Samsung again to schedule service.

Are you using OTA? It seems the reception has either declined a bit for 2 channels or if the "transmitter" signal has declined... not sure how to check to see if it's the former or latter.

Yes, the squeal on my set also will the oscillate if I press a button on the remote.

I just got an HL-S6187w on the 20th of December, and I have this same problem. Friends who have the same set say they don't hear the noise on their set -- same with another friend who has the HL-S5087w. Should I call Samsung or Best Buy since it is still within 30 days? Just like this guy it goes away when I turn the TV on, but if it means anything is wrong I want it fixed before my 30 days are up with Best Buy.
