View Full Version : PowerDVD Ultra (HD-DVD and Blu-Ray)
Al Sherwood 01-11-09, 08:33 PM I went here
http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/download/patches_1_en_US.html, then downloaded the one dated 2008-12-08 for PDVD 7.
Yes, it still plays from harddrive.
Yes, I used SPDIF from my sound card, and I got 5.1 sound OK.
Well I broke it again, I tried to patch up 3319a and it stopped working altogether so...
I uninstalled PDVD, re-installed it from the OEM CDROM (LG) and then allowed it to get the 'critical update'.
Next, applied the 4407 upgrade, then the 4617 upgrade, it plays from the original disc (BD or HD) just fine, but when it comes to the ISO (Daemon tools), only HD_DVD will play, I get the unsupported format message from the BD ISO.
Oh and the worst of it, SPDIF still will not stay checked after the movie starts, maybe it doesn't for anybody?
My version of PDVD that gives me the dreaded unsupported format error is indeed 4617. A buddy with a VERY similar installation, still *had* everything working using 3319a...
I think PDVD is trying to break .iso playback...

I can confirm that at 3730.d everything works except 6 channel sound (glad I was working on a Ghost copy of the system when I upgraded to 4617)!
I wonder about 4407?

For those having this problem the latest version of AnyDVDHD may be of interest:
"6.5.1.1 2009 01 08
- New (Blu-ray): Added support for new PowerDVD builds, which displayed
a "virtual drive not supported" error"
Al Sherwood 01-12-09, 11:07 AM So now what to do, stay at 3730.d, go only as far as 4407 go for broke (pun definitely intended) all of the way to 4617??!!
No matter what version I have installed, the SPDIF option is not selectable once the movie starts, all I see is "2-speaker" etc.
What's with that?
Have you upgraded to the full retail version? Many OEM versions are deliberately 2-channel limited. What does it say in the scrolling box in the bottom right corner of PDVD (to the right of the seek bar)? From memory the OEM versions often say "PowerDVD 2CH" or something similar. The full versions says "PowerDVD Deluxe Version". Just changing versions will not help with this.

I remember that message: "Powerdvd BD+HD 2CH"
That's just it, somehow I got PDVD to version 3730.d from the LG OEM and the scrolling message now reads: "PowerDVD Deluxe Version" Then when I tried the upgrades, it complained that it was 'not a retail version and exited the installation process...
So I started fresh with the OEM LG and progressed to 4407 then 4617 it won't play BD ISO's and SPDIF doesn't work.
I thought that one of the latest updates comnverted all versions of OEM to retail?
As others have said, Cyberlink have been messing around with iso playback of late. Daemon Tools now does not work. You need VCD. You also need the latest version of AnyDVD.
I suspect your problems with sound are related to that fact you installed the OEM version. I too have read of a version that "converts OEM to retail" but am unable to verify if this is true as I bought the retail version. I find it surprisingly generous, if true. But of course a screw up by Cyberlink is not out of the question! I can confirm that most OEM copies definitely have the problem you mention.

Everything you say makes sense, I figured that Cyberlink might have done this to reduce the 'bad press' about Ultra 7.3, namely the final version everybody ends up at actually works!!! (I know, wishfull thinking!)
Anyway, I still have a few downloaded versions to try that are supposed to work with OEM, or take me to retail, or just work.... you get the idea. :o

anderdea 01-12-09, 12:39 PM To get PDVD 7 to play ISO's, download the "Free" software BD DVD drive from Slysoft.com and install it. Double click on your ISO file and it should load to the software dvd drive and PDVD 7 should launch.
belgiangenius 01-12-09, 01:28 PM So, I installed powerDVD 8 after using WinDVD for sometime. Got tired of constant jitters.
Works great for Bluray. Tried an HDDVD yesterday. PDVD 8 shows the HDDVD icon in its main window and automatically loads when I drop in an HDDVD, and then fails to play it. What gives?
Al Sherwood 01-12-09, 02:40 PM Well, from the OEM LG software I managed to go directly to 4617, the banner reads "PowerDVD Deluxe Version"...
I can confirm that Daemon Tools will not mount a BD ISO, but will work with a HD-DVD ISO.
SPDIF and HDMI audio are available but I need to find a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray that has AC3tracks to test. (so far all I get is stereo PCM via the SPDIF when the audio is '2-speaker')
Al Sherwood 01-12-09, 04:44 PM This time I went from OEM LG to 4407, the banner reads: "PowerDVD BD+HD 6CH"...
Daemon tools will mount both HD and BD ISO's they are recognized and both play.
Still no love on the sound front, no matter the selection in the audio tab PCM stereo is all that the AV receiver will recognize. I checked and from the HTPC and the Realtek utility the ouputs to test for DTS and Dolby Digital are both picked up by theAV receiver and displayed as DTS and Dolby Digital resepctively...
So I guess that I am no further ahead...
I don't know what to say. I still think maybe you do not have a true retail version, whatever PDVD is saying, but I'm not sure.
Can you set to 6-channel (not s/pdif). if so, you could do that and use Reclock to encode to AC3 (full bit-rate, significantly better than DVD quality).

As of my last post above, now at sitting at 4407 (BD+HD ISO's working), I would have to agree with you, this is not a full retail version, even the banner message is a variation on the OEM message, just say's 6 CH now instead of 2 CH.
Even when I did get the 4617 as noted earlier, the patch to go to 4617a would not work and it complained that the software had expired or could not be found.
After some more playing it would seem that there is a difference how PDVD reacts to ISO's versus the actual disc. With ISO, only 2 speaker will work, but with the actual HD or BD disck in the drive I can get the SPDIF setting to hold, but I still don't hear any sound. When I select 6 channel, I hear a very faint sound track, nothing usable though.
I have heard about reclock, but if I have to jump through any more hoops I will likely give up, with the original movies in the drive multichannel sound should work...
BTW, what is the difference between SPDIF and HDMI with respect to sound? with SPDIF there is no selection under output mode, but with HDMI there is PCM output and AC3/DTS pass-thru? (no movie playing)
BTW, what is the difference between SPDIF and HDMI with respect to sound? with SPDIF there is no selection under output mode, but with HDMI there is PCM output and AC3/DTS pass-thru? (no movie playing)HDMI has a higher bandwidth for audio, so only HDMI can pass full quality HD audio to your amp, either uncompressed, as "multi-channel LPCM" or, compressed, as DTS-HD, Dolby TrueHD, or the less impressive Dolby Digital Plus. However, all ATI cards before the 4xxx series and I think still all Nvidia cards have only limited HDMI audio capability and can only pass s/pdif (2CH PCM, AC3 or DTS).
It is still impossible on most setups to send the compressed streams from an HTPC, so generally LPCM is the way to go - decompress the audio on the PC and send the uncompressed audio to the amp. This is actually the preferred/recommended way of working anyway for Blu-ray as it allows the player to mix multiple audio streams before sending them e.g. for Picture-in picture presentations. You can also pass AC3/DTS over HDMI.
With s/pdif you are limited to the "old-style" multi-channel codecs - AC3 and DTS. However you can use them at full bit-rate. This makes the quality significantly better than on DVD and probably as good as HD audio on most peoples home setup. If you do not have an HTPC with full HDMI audio capability PowerDVD8 will "downmix" HD soundtracks to DTS or AC3 to pass over s/pdif. You have to set the downmix mode by going to the audio configuration tab WHEN A BLU-RAY IS PLAYING. For some bizzare reason the output mode is greyed out when playback is stopped. Downmixing did not work on PDVD7; The sound was awful. But I have heard reports it was fixed in one of the latest patches. I have not tried it though so don't know for sure. I would not recommend buying PDVD8 however, just to get this feature. Reclock can do it now for free.

How do I setup powerDVD 8 to send LPCM to my amp? as of now I have selected HDMI AC3/DTS pass-through. When playing a blu-ray disc powerdvd says the audio format is DTS-HD Master 7.1 but on my AMP DENON-AVR 889 it only says DTS 5.1 Channel.
Many thanks.
jsc1205 01-13-09, 10:20 AM I have the Xonar HDAV1.3 soundcard that utilizes TotalMedia Theatre for Blu-ray playback and bitstreams Dolby True HD and DTS-MA. TMT must be used for this, since TMT is an ASUS OEM version that is to work with the soundcard. TMT has a 10ft interface for Vista Media Center that can be controlled with a media center remote. Its pretty seamless.
Now, when it comes to playing back standard DVD's, TMT falls short on video quality (soft, muted quality). When compaired to PowerDVD, there is a very visable difference with PowerDVD winning over.
I am using Open Media Library &/or MyMovies to manage my DVD/Blu-ray collection (using AnyDVD HD and VCD). For Blu-ray playback I use TMT / standard DVD I use PowerDVD (using ISO's for everything).
My question is, has anyone heard of Cyberlink implementing a 10ft interface for Vista Media Center?
Also, Im using PowerDVD Ultra v7.3. Is there any reason to not upgrade to the latest version or should I stick with what I have to avoid issues?
Thanks for any info anyone can provide

Thanks for the detailed explanation jong1, I know the specifics about how HDMI audio works, your description about HDMI versus SPDIF as it relates to the ATI video cards was what I needed. I have a 3650 so I won't be expecting much sound from it. ;)
As for migrating to PDVD8, I doubt that as well, the main reason for a HTPC (in my home theatre) if the act as the one stop for all media, HD, BD, MKV's music etc., if this doesn't work then I will just buy a standalone Blu-Ray player and retire the HTPC.
What I was hoping to get from SPDIF was one of the following: "DTS-HD, Dolby TrueHD, or Dolby Digital Plus", but it would seem that no setting within PDVD 7 will allow me to get this to happen.
So this brings me to the question, and I might have read your post wrong,
It is still impossible on most setups to send the compressed streams from an HTPC
I am trying to get the compressed audio from the sound card/on board sound, not the video card. I could connect 8 channel analog out from the HTPC to th AV receiver as an alternate...
I can either stay at PDVD 7 build 3730d or go to 4407, as these both play back my ISO's and appear to be stable (4617 didn't like the BD ISO):
Downmixing did not work on PDVD7; The sound was awful. But I have heard reports it was fixed in one of the latest patches
As long as I can get good multi-channel sound I would be happy.

To support 7.1 DTS-HD/DD HD you will need a Asus Xonar or stand-alone player, currently no other pc options exist. You can have 7.1 PCM if you connect thru HDMI, if card/board and software support it, or all analog outputs from sound card to Receiver. Think i got it right.
You can see what your motherboard supports at asus site.

That is what I figured, with regards to your comment about analog outputs...
With PDVD 7 what would you actually get from the analog outputs from the motherboard? LPCM 7.1?
My Gigabyte mobo provides 7.1 analog out in addition to SPDIF, I wonder what settings on PDVD I need to select to get this output, I would think choosing 8 channel under the audio tab should do it?

HDMI would be easier way and less wires involved, your board should give you 7.1 PCM out to your receiver. Can't remember how the settings on PDVD7 would be-- and if it supports HDMI, on PDVD8 you have to select 8 speakers-- selecting HDMI makes the system crash.

Thanks Tony, yeah I only wished I had HDMI sound, unfortunately my receiver (Denon 3805) is just old enough that it doesn't have any HDMI connections, so that route is out.
My only option for sound at this point is 7.1 analog or SPDIF from the HTPC.
PDVD 7 (4407/4617) has multi speaker analog as well as SPDIF and HDMI selections under the audio tab, just haven't had much luck with multichannel audio from the SPDIF connection...
daMaster 01-15-09, 10:06 AM I've got PowerDVD 7 build 4407 and an ATI Radeon 3470 video card connected to my AVR via HDMI. For some reason, I'm only getting 2-channel PCM out of PowerDVD over HDMI with Dolby Digital Plus audio tracks. With SPDIF (optical), PowerDVD downconverts to Dolby Digital. Why doesn't it do that over HDMI?

Forgive the lateness of this reply. When you install the retail 4617 patch, it uninstalls the current build of Powerdvd 7.3, oem OR retail, and installs 4617 retail files but doesn't alter the registry to retail since it should already be retail since its a retail patch. so you have files that are retail but the registry is still oem, there's no retail key in the registry so any subsequent patches will fail. oem patches update oem build and retail patches update retail builds, but this "hybrid" is a fluke that can't be updated further.
deandob 01-16-09, 04:23 PM Anyone know how to force subtitles off for PowerDVD 7. I always have to turn them off each time a play a movie. Quite annoying!
This also annoys me greatly and affects about 50% of my HD DVD titles (only a problem on the occassional Blu-Ray) and for some titles they won't turn off at all! Surely this is a problem for everyone?
I have had some success editing the VPL to remove all the subtitle sections that AnyDVD uses as well as restarting the movie and selecting subtitles off in the main movie menu but it is not consistent. I was thinking of writing a short program that strips out the VPL subtitle entries automatically but it would still be a pain.

Thanks for the update JustABDFan, I figured that the process although working did not result in a 'through and through' retail version, but hey it still takes the version to 4617... but unfortunaly I could not get BD ISO's to load at this level.
For me I decided to remove the 'shall we say altered' version of PDVD and then start from scratch with the OEM version that came with my LG drive (2911c). From here I applied the 4407 patch which still plays BD and HD ISO's and provides 8 channel output and 6 channel encoding.
At this point I have decided to go with the analog 7.1 channel connection from the sound card (mobo) to the 7.1 descrete input on my Denon 3805, this seems to be working quite well.

I am not sure what build of PDVD you guys are at, but at 2911c, 3730d, 4407 and 4617, I do not get subtitles asserting themselves on either HD or BD discs...
Generally I run AnyDVD-HD all of the time and play back both ISO and original media without a problem.

Any ideas?

I'm using PDVD 7.3 OEM (came with my LG BR/HD combo drive)....I have the 4617 patch and also the 5.1 patch. Problem is under Audio, I do not see "HDMI" (only 2,4,6 and SPDIF options) as I just upgrade my receiver to a Pioneer VSX1080 (has hdmi 1.3 on it).
I have a 780g mobo passing audio/video via hdmi out to my receiver.
Any ideas as to how I can fix and get HDMI settings under the audio output options in PDVD 7.3?
Thanks

Just wondering? Do you have your default playback device set-up on your computer as hdmi? Right click on the speaker icon in the lower right hand corner of your screen, right click playback device, and see if you have an hdmi setting. If so, then make sure you make it the default device and test it. Configure it for 5.1 surround. If sound comes out of your speakers, then powerdvd should now work. Just make sure you restart powerdvd. Once set to hdmi, make sure it says pcm in the box just under it to take advantage of the hi-def soundtracks. If this does not work for you, then something else is amiss.
Fragster 01-16-09, 09:04 PM I'm at work so will try that at home.
And thanks for the tip ;-)!!
[Edit] John.....if I remember correctly, I did upgrade my RealTek HDMI driver to the lastest (for WinXP) and changed the default output to "Realtek HDMI" under windows audio manager. And I do get full 5.1 surround in PDVD but the amber sign in PDVD says "6 channel". This was when I was using SPDIF before so I thought in PDVD, it must have a HDMI setting but under audio options, there's no HDMI...only 2,4,6 and SPDif.
It doesn't say "PCM" either :-(.
deandob 01-16-09, 09:19 PM I'd like to get to the bottom of the subtitle problem, its pretty much the only major thing remaining to be fixed IMO. It only happens on HD DVD (I think I saw it once on Blu-ray, but I could turn off the subtitle)
For those experiencing the subtitle problem (where subtitles come on automatically at the start of the movie and for some movies wont switch off), please report your configuration so we can look for similarities, as it is obviously something to do with setup as not everyone experiences the problem.

This problem has been happening for me pretty much since I setup PDVD 7 over 2 years ago, and have changed motherboards, OS, video cards, drivers, PDVD patches etc. over that time so I'm really stumped to know what could be the problem with the setup.
The only thing I can think of is the original version of PDVD that I started from had the problem, and the patches have not touched that area of the application since. I started with version 7.3 retail from April 2007 (I can't find the version number in the original install).
Maybe I should try a later full install - however I don't know where I can get the binaries from (legally)??

SONY STR-DG820 AV receiver
Using this setup, I am getting surround sound from PowerDVD playing blu-ray discs, as long as I configure PowerDVD for "8 speaker". The receiver says that it's getting LPCM input signal and the audio sounds reasonably well.
However, if I try to configure PowerDVD to "use HMDI - PCM output", PowerDVD hangs as soon as I try to play any blu-ray disk...
Questions:
1. Am I missing anything in sound quality by using the "8 speaker" option in PowerDVD, rather than "use HMDI - PCM output", or both options result in the same quality signal being sent to the receiver?
2. Is anyone else experimenting this kind of hang? Do you have a solution for it?
Thanks!
Al Sherwood 01-17-09, 12:21 AM Hi Guys
I'm using PDVD 7.3 OEM (came with my LG BR/HD combo drive)....I have the 4617 patch and also the 5.1 patch. Problem is under Audio, I do not see "HDMI" (only 2,4,6 and SPDIF options) as I just upgrade my receiver to a Pioneer VSX1080 (has hdmi 1.3 on it).
I have a 780g mobo passing audio/video via hdmi out to my receiver.
Any ideas as to how I can fix and get HDMI settings under the audio output options in PDVD 7.3?
Thanks
I am not an expert, but I have tried a few of these versions, I do know that both 4407 and 4617 have HDMI selectable as a choice under the audio tab when the movie is not playing. Since I don't have a HDMI audio device I can't confirm that it actually works...
Al Sherwood 01-17-09, 12:26 AM The only reason I bumped up from 7 to 8 was that 7 did the same thing. I have to re-install my copy of 7 and check the version #. My wife and son are pi$$ed right now....me too.
DC
Hmmm, All versions of 7 that I have: 2911c-4617 have worked with AnyDVD-HD...
FWIW. 2911c is the OEM version that came packaged with the LG drive I bought.
It would seem to me that you have a different problem, but hey, these computer programs are known to be cranky, I have often seen a rebott (nothing else) correct a problem!
Al Sherwood 01-17-09, 12:33 AM I'd like to get to the bottom of the subtitle problem, its pretty much the only major thing remaining to be fixed IMO.
O/S: Vista SP1 with latest patches
Motherboard: Gigabyte PA-G35-DS3 Intel
Video: Gigabyte 9600GTS with latest released driver 181.20
PDVD: 7 with 4617 patch
This problem has been happening for me pretty much since I setup PDVD 7 over 2 years ago, and have changed motherboards, OS, video cards, drivers, PDVD patches etc. over that time so I'm really stumped to know what could be the problem with the setup.
The only thing I can think of is the original version of PDVD that I started from had the problem, and the patches have not touched that area of the application since. I started with version 7.3 retail from April 2007 (I can't find the version number in the original install).
Maybe I should try a later full install - however I don't know where I can get the binaries from (legally)??
Dean, I would remove PDVD using the program update function within the control panel, reboot, then install the retail copy you originally bought, before going any further try that version for subtitles... if it fails here then no point in going any further.
I have a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L mobo and from the original PDVD that came with the LG drive through 4617 I haven't had 'much' of a problem with the subtitles.
The reason I say 'much' is I do recall an issue once an I don't remember the movie, but it seemed to start when I turned on subtitles from the movie menu, again after turning off subtitles and then the moviethe movie and restarting the computer the problem went away.

Tried that without any movie playing, I only get 2,4,6,8 and SPDIF options under the PDVD Audio tab.:(.
I wonder if the OEM version is crippled after all :(.
Al
I noticed u have the 7.3 OEM too so how did u upgrade to 4617a? As that patch is for retail versions only (not the OEM) (????)) Thanks.
Dreamwriter 01-17-09, 04:08 AM Hey y'all. I been searching the thread, finding way too many varied problems and solutions, so maybe someone can help me :)
Tonight I set about installing my crusty old Power DVD so I could watch some HD-DVD's. I started with P-DVD 7.3 Ultra build 3104 (Download edition). That was so old it wouldn't let me play my HD-DVD's without updating. So I installed the build it pointed me to, which oddly enough was only slightly newer, 3319. Threw in Pan's Labyrinth, and while it looked great, P-DVD couldn't get at the crunchy center of the DTS-MA: I got no sound at all. So, I saw it was offering another update, downloaded the 4102 update. This update killed the movie video (menus worked fine), got black screens for any video, but hey, the DTS sound works! Came here and found mention of a far newer build, 4617a. Unfortunately, that one not only has no video, its menus are all corrupt.
Any idea what is going on, and how to get my video *and* DTS audio working? I am getting rather frustrated at this point. Oh, and I'm not using HDMI or DVI, it's straight VGA.

Yes I have 7.3 Ultra (OEM) installed, currently using build 4407, never did get to 4617a only 4617.
Even though I could get 4617 to install the registry settings did not indicate it was a retail version hence, I could not get the 4617a retail patch to apply because I started from an OEM version. Please see the explanation post just a bit earlier in this thread:

To make sure I am not spinning a tale; I just checked the HTPC and the audio tab within PDVD 7.3 (build 4407) and I do see all multi speaker selections as well as SPDIF and HDMI. I am sure that this was also true at build 4617.

So basically, I do this , right??
- Uninstall PDVD completely
-Install PDVD again from OEM disk
- Install 4407 patch
-Run retail patch to upgrade to PDVD Ultra retail?
Thanks again

From the LG OEM it is very easy to get to build 4407 or 4617 from downloads at the Cyberlingk website. Maybe this would be worth a try?

Depending on where you want to end up, remember you will get to 4617 (quasi-retail) but any subsequent updates may be restricted by the registry settings, for example you won't be able to install the 4617a patch.
So...
1) yes, uninstall PDVD from the control panel within Windows
2) yes, install PDVD OEM from disc
Then the next step depends and what you want. There is a patch that will take that OEM right to 4617 but as noted above. Or you can install 4407 then 4617 one step at a time.
3) yes, install 4407 (stop here and check the audio tab for desired settings, I get all audio choices available and ISO playback of HD and BD)
4) install 4617 patch OEM version (if there is something that you 'need' at this level)

Dreamwriter 01-17-09, 02:46 PM Looks like Build 3516 will play back Pan's Labyrinth. Anybody got a link to where I can download it? I'm having a heck of a time. Damn Cyberlink, should have kept PowerDVD 7 playing HD-DVD's until they replaced it with 8.
doctorcilantro 01-17-09, 03:06 PM Okay thanks, I have 3319. I'll try updating it. What's the preferred build? I'm not clear on how to upgrade if I don't have the OEM installed. I tried the 4617 update and it asks to uninstall my current.

I use the LG HD DVD/Blu-Ray drive but not the OEM PDVD version, I purchased PDVD for software download from newegg before I got this drive. It is version 2605. I will try the OEM version that came with the drive as per these posts you can patch it to the retail version now.
JACZML120 01-18-09, 01:01 AM The 6 channel support on oem powerdvd 7 is broken. Its a known issue, it happens to me also. Even updating to oem 4617 didn't help. Your options are basically to buy Powerdvd 8 ultra, Arcsoft TMT or Windvd 9 Bluray. each player has its own issues so you might want to do some investigating before you pick one.
Edit: there's another option, use at your own risk. see this post http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=15038045&postcount=7479
Well 6 ch works ok with Dolby TrueHD etc but DTS is the one that is broken. It does work as expected for a buddy of mine as well, Dolby and DTS 6 ch he has the same LG OEM version. Hmm...

Preferred build, I guess that this depends on what you need/want or are trying to fix.
I was at 3319 for a very long time, now I am at 4407, this seems to work for most things that I have tried but I have to say that I have not tried everything yet.
The biggest surprise I got tonight was that on the BD disc; Bank Job, when I tried to play 8 speaker sound it wasn't quite right so I tried the SPDIF setting and I got something I wasn't expecting, DD encoded sound for trailers and DTS encoded sound for the feature movie (as recognized by my AV receiver), very nice! :)

Review post #'s 7796-7799, remember the patch to take OEM to retail is not completely sucessful... at this point I will staying at build OEM 4407 while I check things out.
deandob 01-18-09, 04:06 AM Al, that worked, I used version 3703 from early last year and then applied every patch since then until the latest patch (and swapped out the RendererV.dll with the previous patch so that the HD DVD menus work), and all good. I checked with a known title I had previously never been able to remove the subtitles, and they are gone now.
So the updates must not replace all files and there must have been a bug in the version I used (2700 I think) that was never fixed by the patches.
All good - PowerDVD is now doing what it (mostly) should now. :)

Good news Dean, so what version did you end up at?
Curious when you say: (and swapped out the RendererV.dll with the previous patch so that the HD DVD menus work) is this HD-DVD menu access with a remote control or with a mouse?
Is it true that Ultra will not play Blu-Ray from a hard drive folder? Will any player?
PDVD Ultra will play Blu-Ray iso images. The iso images must first be mounted as a virtual drive. SlySoft Virtual CloneDrive is free and works well. You just double-click the image file to mount as a drive. Then select that drive letter in PDVD and click Play.
ImgBurn is a free program that can be used to create the iso images. http://www.imgburn.com

Can you double check that file name? I don't see a "RendererV.dll" in my PDVD installation, although I do see a dxRenderV.dll. Is that the one you actually replaced to fix HD-DVD menus?

I too went from OEM (LG 2911c) to 4407... it would appear that these updates do not change all files each time, it seems that depending on where you start from will largely determine where you end up. A few posts back I confirmed this with the 'OEM-Retail' patch.
When you say 6-channel DTS are you talking about using the '6-speaker' analog output or by using encoded DTS through SPDIF?
Last night when I tried to watch Bank Job using the 8-speaker setting in the audio tab the sound wasn't right (generally messed up), but when I chose SPDIF I got 6 channel sound. when I tested Casino Royale, both the 8 speaker setting and the SPDIF audio selection performed perfectly.
What was different, the movie sound tracks, Bank Job has DTS HD Master 7.1, Casino Royale has PCM 5.1 and compressed 5.1
Fragster 01-18-09, 09:19 PM Al (and others)
Thanks for the help....I uninstalled PDVD completely, installed it again off the OEM CD, applied the 4407 patch and the HDCP errors have gone away....
I just watched Planet Earth BR with full 5.1 audio and no crashes, freezes, etc. Finally the software is doing what it was intended to do in the first place!!
Thanks again
PS: Still no "HDMI' option under the audio tab in PDVD with 4407 patch. But when I select SPDIF (even though I'm using HDMI for audio), I seem to get full 5.2 effect so I'll leave it like that, I s'ppose.

Out the Analog ports on the sound card. As an example playing back Live free or Die Hard setting the audio to 5.1 DTS-MA I only get stereo sound out the speakers, if I switch to the DD track I get full 5.1. Also confirmed the issue with Vampires Super-Bit DVD. Same issue, selecting DTS = 2ch DD= 6ch

Yes, my bad, I was going from memory. It is dxRenderV.dll and is needed with the latest PDVD7 patch as some of the HD DVD ondisk menus don't work with the latest patch 4617a. As I use PDVD for both Blu-Ray and HD DVD, I need the latest patches to keep up with the Blu-Ray releases.

Interesting, so what patch level did you get the 'working" version of dxRenderV.dll from?
Also how do you get it, do you have to save/replace it from a installed/working installation of PDVD?
Currently I haven't noticed a problem with the menus so maybe I have the correct file (1.46.669.3202)?

I don't have Die Hard on BD, but with Bank Job (DTS-HD Master 7.1) if I use the analog (8 speaker output) I only get a front channel working and the AV receiver shows that it is seeing a stereo + sub signal.
But if I use the SPDIF connection as selected by PDVD and allow the movie to play back the DTS-HD Master audio 7.1 (as shown in the information window) my AV receiver receives and decodes DTS 5.1 surround...
This is one reason I like to have the availability of both analog and digital sound playback as the number of variables require as many options to get the right sound! ;)

i still can't play a hddvd. I am not sure what the problem is.I did get king kong to play but when i stop it and tried to continue playing it powerdvd just quit.
any help would be thankful.

You got that right Larry, it is amazing that just about every PDVD install seems to have it's quirks! Where did the orignal copy of PDVD come from, ie. OEM LG or? I have a firm belief that not all files are updated when the patches are applied, how were things before you went to build 4407?
I am not familiar with the processing power of the AMD chips, but when I used to run a P4 Dual 3.0Ghz and there was a problem with stutter, I would go into task manager select the PDVD process and increase it's priority to high or realtime.
Aesculus 01-21-09, 12:16 AM I finally got around to hooking my PDVD 7.3 4617 via ASUS G35 Mobo up to my receiver via HDMI and trying a few disks. It reports 48 khz and 5.1 channels. I maxed out the Windows volume in the mixer and set all the DTS and DD settings to the max since my Denon AVP can handle it all.
I must say I prefer the DTS core from DTS-HD Master better than LPCM. I found it brighter, more lively and louder by about 10 db. The DD passthough was a bit muddy too but louder than LPCM.
Is there anything else I can try to improve the sound of LPCM? At this point I found the passthrough mode to be a better sound experience. I am thinking about dropping back to SPDIF and hooking the HDMI directly to the TV. In this manner I won't have to have my receiver on for plain PC surfing and just use the receiver for audio only on HD disks. I will use the HDMI audio for default windows sounds to the TV.
Maybe I will try again when there is a HD sound card that works in my HTPC, or just wait tell the OPPO BD Universal player is released and go that route for BD with HD audio.
I purchased a full vsn of PDVD 8 ultra on 1-4-09 from the Cyberlink site. After installing, it wouldn’t start-up. When I tried to launch it, I get a small box that says Powerdvd 8 at the top, a Yellow triangle with a exclamation mark "!" and an OK. When I select OK it closes and nothing happens. I don't even get to the splash screen to put the key in.
I purchased PDVD8Ultra last week and I have excactly the same error - an empty error dialog and nothing more. After a week with Cyberlink support (which is not very helpful) I'm still stuck.
Did you ever resolve you problem, and how?
daMaster 01-21-09, 09:32 AM I've got PowerDVD 7 build 4407 and an ATI Radeon 3470 video card connected to my AVR via HDMI. For some reason, I'm only getting 2-channel PCM out of PowerDVD over HDMI with Dolby Digital Plus audio tracks. With SPDIF (optical), PowerDVD downconverts to Dolby Digital. Why doesn't it do that over HDMI?
Can any one help with this? I just can't get multi-channel AC3 audio out of HDMI using PowerDVD build 4407. I only get 2 channel PCM for some reason.

Try the Windows speaker test which puts out a sound on each speaker.
For PDVD test then you will need to get a setup disk like Video Essentials or some movie that you know has a discrete sound track that moves about the speakers.

Hey there BigSexy, as Chris suggested you can try Windows speaker test or I would suggest the sound cards configuration tools. Unfortunately if it is a basic test then all you will confirm is that all connected speakers are working.
Some later chip sets have the ability to send out user selectable audio streams such as DTS or DD, I don't recall if the Audigy has such a utility?
You didn't mention how you have the AVR3805 connected to the sound card, SP/DIF or multichannel analog? PowerDVD can be configured to provide audio to either of these types of outputs. If you have chosen the multichannel analog connection then the 3805 will play back exactly what it is provided, channel for channel with no alteration.
But since you mentioned: or is my avr just taking a 2 channel signal and broadcasting thu all 7.1 channels. I will assume you are using a SP/DIF connection...
With the 3805 connected this way and the connection mode set to 'auto' you should see what type of signal is being provided to the receiver, if it is a DTS encoded stream the DTS symbol in the upper left of the receiver display will illuminate, if it is Dolby Digital that will be illuminated. Additionally you will see below that symbol the number of channels present in that stream 2, 5.1, 7.1 etcetera, then over to the right side of the main display you will see the number of speakers the 3805 is driving with that signal.
If it is 2 channel PCM then the main display will tell you the frequency and that it is PCM, again look at the left (input) and right (output) side of the 3805 display to see which speaker symbols are illuminated.
So if you choose the 'auto' mode for the surround sound you should get what is being sent to the 3805 from the sound card but remember this can be altered by choosing one of the user selectable choices via 'surround mode'.
I hope this helps?
BIGSEXY6306 01-22-09, 01:25 PM Thanks guys big time for the adivce, and just to answer your question Al I am connecting my receiver to the htpc via the analog channels. Soundblaster makes a cable just for this purpose to use with their sound cards. It the 7.1 home theater cable. I will try the windows test this evening when I get home.As far as the computer configuration I have it set-up as 7.1 but I did not run a test to see if it was actually sending a signal to each speaker. Since I am using the ext. in on my receiver it does not tell me if I am getting 2ch or 7.1 ch it just says EXT IN and my receiver is putting out the signal to 7.1 channels. I just want to be sure that its receiving the disrete channels. Also I only have the out of the box version of PDVD that came with the blu-ray player and it did upgrade to 7.3 when I first started the prgram. It keeps giving me the option to upgrade to PDVD Ultra 8. One more thing, when playing a bd dvd the scolling pdvd txt say POWER DVD BD+HD+2CH which is what started this whole question of 2 ch vs 7.1 channels of audio. When i click on the configuration button it lists bit rate and all that jazz along with 5.1 channels, and then I can click on the audio tab and for output mode I have 2 choices:
No Effect or CLEM1,2 or something like that. So I just wanted to make sure of the dts hd ma signal was being sent to the receiver. I hope I did not jump around to much trying to post this at work rather quickly.

You are using analog ins to your receiver. It is not going to do any decoding or bitstreaming. There is no rate etc. You are just using an amplifier. DD and DTS mean nothing to your receiver in this configuration.
You need to get some audio sources that have discreet outputs per channel and put your ears up to the speakers. Thats your only diagnostic tool at the moment.

Hey Chris, this is mostly true, however another variable at work is PowerDVD, I do not have confidence that when you select (for example) 8 speaker and no effect that it will pass all of the descrete audio channels from the disc to the sound card and therefore to the receiver.
Even if a movie or test disc is supposed to give mutli-channel sound PowerDVD may intercede and change things.
I can use the onboard sound tests within the HTPC to play each speaker individually or one after another (analog connections) and this works perfectly but when I play back a movie (for example Casino Royale BD) all channels do not receive sound... very frustrating!

BIGSEXY, be careful about putting too much emphasis on the scrolling information in the window, I am at 4407 and the scrolling message says "PowerDVD BD+HD 6 CH" which refers to the Audio Decoder Capability, in my case 6 channel, not the audio output capabilty which on mine says it is 8 channels. When a movie is playing right click on the screen and use the selection "show information" to enable a window that shows the audio that PowerDVD is receiving from the disc.
As for DTS HD Master Audio, I do not know if PowerDVD can pass this through to the analog speaker outputs, to confirm I tried Bank Job and selected the DTS Master HD Master Audio (there is other no English sound track selectable) and all I heard was the from L+R no other speaker was playing. The only way for me to get multi channel sound from this BD is to select SP/DIF in PowerDVD, this gave me DTS Surround from a 3805.
With regards to upgrades to PowerDVD OEM there is a legitimate route from the OEM LG to 4407 or 4617 depending what your requirements are. Though this will not fix the DTS audio through analog outputs.

I purchased PDVD8Ultra last week and I have excactly the same error - an empty error dialog and nothing more. After a week with Cyberlink support (which is not very helpful) I'm still stuck.
Did you ever resolve your problem, and how?
I'll answer my own question: It turns out that the build 2430 that Cyberlink currently is selling on their website is broken. The older build 2217a works fine for me. Go figure...

i am running powerdvd8 ultra and after a reinstall of the os (vista ultimate 32bit)
i can no longer view BD all i get it audio, i can see the menu bar and select chapters in transformers, i but when i go to play the movie all i get is audio and a black screen. I can't figure out what is different now then before. use to be able to Play BD just fine before the OS reinstall.
OK this is odd, if i turn on subtitles I can see them, but the rest of the screen remains black!

Likely HDCP is broken by this pos software. One bug after another, after another after another. I swear they are MORE concerned with making it IN-operable than they are with making it WORK....

any way to fix this? although i don't use my blue ray drive bd playback too much (for obvious reasons) it is still nice to have it in working order.

I remember having this issue from Pirates of the Carribean a while ago and it turns out to be ATI driver. I am now using latest ATI Catalyst 8.12 driver and it works fine.
See my old link:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=13788784&postcount=740
Are you getting same issue as I did? If so, I would blame more on graphics card driver than PDVD. Try installing different ATI versions drivers until it works.
What video card do you have and what version driver?
My gear:
Windows Vista Home Premium, SP1
Asus P4C800 Deluxe MB
3 GHz Pentium 4 with HT, 1 MB cache
2 GB G-Skill RAM, DDR 400, 2-3-2-5
Sapphire AGP HD 3850 (Radeon) with CCC driver 8.12
Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra Version 8, build 2217a

mva5580 01-24-09, 07:21 PM I'm having a problem that I hope one of the experts here can provide a solution for. I experience this issue in both PDVD 7 and 8, Ultra editions. My PC is the following:
- AMD 9950
- 4gb RAM
- ATI 4870, running HDMI from this to receiver, using newest 8.12 driver
I seem to pretty much watch HD-DVD's in 7, Blu in 8. The problem I'm experiencing is with picture quality. It's not like it's horrible, because it's not, but when I watch it, it almost seems to me like there is a sort of "grain" effect on the picture. It is NOT heavy by any means, and it's really only noticeable on actors faces, and/or if there are close up shots with movement, stuff like that. I wish I could describe it better or provide a screenshot, but I don't think a screen would point it out anyway. The more I watch it, I think it's what people describe as "ghosting," "artifacting," something like that. For example while watching Harry Potter, in one of the night scenes when they are walking along the road in the beginning of the 5th movie, watching the old woman talk and move her head, it's like you can just vaguely see the image not entirely move with her as it's supposed to, but like it's a slight case of ghosting. At least that's as close as I can come to describing it.
I don't know if the picture is just the way it's supposed to be, or if PowerDVD/ATI aren't capable of making the picture any better than it is. Can someone please give me a hand with this? In the PDVD video options, I have the AVIVO box checked, and beyond that everything is unchanged.
EDIT: Well, I unchecked the de-noise box in the CCC, and that has fixed the problem. Glad it was an easy fix.
dylan_t_jones 02-25-09, 07:14 AM New to the forum, to long to look up but I have two issues with powerDVDultra.
Issue1- I only get stereo spdif output with BLUERAY but I can get dolby digital 5.1 with DVD. When playing a blueray film the audio setup changes from spdif to stereo. When I change it when playing the film I still get dolby prologic and not digital on my receiver, this is with 5.1 audio set up on the blueray film not the lossless setup (I've only tested it with APLOCALYPTO film from a friend).
Issue2- I have a video -audio delay with films via PowerDVD. This I know is because of the LCD processing on my HDTV (Philips 32PFL9632D), so sound via receiver via spdif comes before the video. With other media software like Zoom player, VLC and classic media player I can delay audio either using either the mentioned media players or with AC3filter. But, I cant delay the audio with PowerDVD as it does not have audio delay setup and I cant get AC3filter to work with PowerDVD. I have noticed, when I look at the setup, that DVD uses Realtek but Blueray doesn't. Is this the cause of the problem?
Can anyone help me with these problems?

Hello,
Issue 1 - are you trying by any chance to play hi-def audio formats through S/PDIF? Because that is impossible. Only DD and DTS and other lower formats. You can also get PCM through S/PDIF but I don't think it will work with the high bitrates of BDs. So I suggest you revert to analog out for hi-def audio or you choose a lower audio track quality on you BDs (if you have any).
Issue 2 - in that case I would suggest you play the movie m2ts file from your BD through KMplayer, Zoomplayer or any other app. You will then be able to tweak the audio and video stream sync.
Cheers
dylan_t_jones 02-25-09, 08:04 AM Issue 1
With the blueray film I tried - Apocalypto, I could choose either lossless high definition sound or the lower bitrate 5.1 DD. I chose the latter and I still only got stereo out on my spdif. As I said with normal DVDs I can get DD and DTS with no problems.
Issue 2
I have tried to play blue ray files on zoom player and media player by using SlySoft AnyDVD to remove the protection from decrypted films (without it only powerDVD can play blueray). This works great as I get dolby digital and I can sync it with AC3filter, but I loose the subtitles with Apocalypto. Is their anyway I can get AC3filter or any other digital audio filter to work with powerDVD?

Issue 1 - Just a dumb question, did you choose output S/PDIF in PDVD? If so then your problem is with AC3FILTER. You need the proper settings. Fiddle with it or google some screenshots. This forum has some BTW.
Issue 2 - No sorry. OTOH you could use external subs within KMplayer or zoomplayer.
rajdude 02-25-09, 09:13 AM for issue two......many AV receivers and processors have the ability to delay sound (mine does). You may want to look into that.

Did you ever find out what this release was for? I can't find reference of that drive...
For now I will stick with build 4407, it works!
Al Sherwood 03-18-09, 12:37 PM Well, I have an interesting thing to report. Due to other (unrelated) issues I decided to refresh and rebuild my HTPC.
A fresh build of Vista 32bit SP1 and updated with all Windows supplied updates, the latest video card drivers, latest ATI Catalyst Suite, AnyDVD-HD 6.5.1.5, Slysoft VCD and PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra LG OEM upgraded to build 4407.
Everything works, all audio streams (SPDIF: DTS and DD), 8 channel analog audio, playback of Blu-Ray and HDDVD both from the original media and ISO formats...
I guess that I have hit upon the combination that works for my hardware. :D
Vista 32bit SP1 and all updates
E8400, 4GB, Diamond ATI 3560, LG GGC-H20L, Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L (using onboard audio, SPDIF/analog)
ATI Catalyst 9.2
PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra (LG OEM upgraded to build 4407)
Slysoft AnyDVD-HD 6.5.1.5 and VCD
Ok this is funny I recently opened my HD DVD French copy of Coffret Le Labyrinthe De Pan, and stuck it in my A3 a couple of weeks back and it won't play at all. Rinsed it with some warm water Nadda, nothing still won't load tried many many times after polishing the disc. Put it in my BD5k and no problem except when it gets to Mercedes milking the cow it starts to studder a quick hit on pause fixes it and since there are still issues with the 5k well....
So I decided to try my media PC with the 2.4 P4 and ATi 2600 with 4407 pdvd and it played the movie perfect last night. Oh and get this just for kicks I fired up the A3 last night and guess what... first load it played wtf? but still had issues in the beginning but was able to play all the way through Today it's back to normal stuck on the load screen on the A3.
I load it into my media PC again, and now it gets stutters now it's before the cow scene when Ofelia is in the bathroom looking at the book. Skipping forward re enables playback but the error in that scene is repeatable. This disc I'm thinking has to be defective in some way what do you think? Also my copy of the Aviator is bad also, all players have the same problem with that title that one I'm sending back to Warner.
Arcenon 03-24-09, 08:24 AM Hey,
I purchased Powerdvd 9 ultra version a few weeks ago because I wanted to view my blu-ray by using the computer. When I just wanted to watch Die Another day in blu ray (import) powerdvd gives me a message saying: this blu-ray disc is for region A only and I am in region B.. Turns out you can only switch 5 times... does anyone knows a workaround or something for powerdvd 9?.
AnyDVD (http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvdhd.html) ? :D

thanks,
I guess that my interest continues as long as I can have a working edition of PDVD that plays HDDVD and BD from optical and ISO locations.
Currently I have 7.3 Ultra at build 4407 that does just that, but I like to know what is available and if it changes but still provides the above prerequisites.

I looked at this version a few days back. It won't install on an LG GGC-H20L drive. I looked at the files and the files have significantly higher build numbers than 4617a.
It appears that on the codecs, they have moved the logic around as some of the codecs have increased in size dramatically, while others have shrunk dramatically.
I could not get the files from this new version to work with PDVD 8 2521 for the HD-DVD hack. I also had no luck in getting this new version to install or run. It seems to me like we are pretty much out of luck until they release a corresponding retail update.

It is amazing how many problems get created by installing and removing multiple versions of interactive programs all on the same platform, between the OS, BIOS, Audio drivers, Video drivers, application programs, emulation programs and codecs (and more!) it is a wonder that this stuff works as adverstised...
When I did a fresh install of the OS with all Windows updates in place, BIOS at the recommended version, latest audio and video drivers, and each application program (PDVD, ANYDVD, VCD Clone) at the known complimentary/working version it is a thing of beauty or should I say a software engineering marvel: working as designed... ;)
I can see my HTPC existing for awhile when the results are like this, add the Vista Media Center and it is impressive to watch movies, pre-recorded TV, view slides and listen to music all on the same device, but I guess that I am getting a little off the topic of PDVD now. :D

Did a fresh install of Vista X64, let it update, installed Audio and Video driver,AnyDVD and VCD and PDVD8, let it update to a patch (2217) and things works great, i could never get Audio to work well before. Everything just works, very happy with it. Never thought i could say that about a Cyberlink product.
JustABDFan 03-29-09, 05:42 AM I looked at this version a few days back.
I looked into this patch today and found it VERY interesting...here's why. It is basically a complete installer that is limited by a trivial check that is easily circumvented. It installs a 6 channel blu-ray only build of PowerDVD Ultra 7 and you don't need to have a prior version installed or a serial, the serial is already included in the installer much like its already included on the oem cds that come with the drives. I am attaching two screen caps that show build information as well as two options under the BDROM tab. One is "enable BDJ keyboard support". PowerDVD 8 Ultra users will probably be familiar with the registry keys to turn on the shortcuts, this looks to be the same thing going on here except theres an option in the GUI now, no fiddling in regedit. I haven't tried any blu-rays on it but I expect it to work ok, if not i'll just rollback to 4617.

For those that don't find anything computer related trivial, can you give more specific information about this ?

I don't know if I can publically. If a moderator would be kind enough to give the go ahead to post the circumvention instructions then I will gladly. I will say that if you can use 7-zip and notepad, you're half way there.

Thanks for the detailed info, yes it is interesting, but for me I want (need) to retain the HDDVD playback as well.
So for right now 4407 is my friend!
I do have a question about 4617 though, when I tried this build it would not play ISO files (?), but as per my recent posts about a clean install maybe this was a problem on the old OS installation?
What has been your experience with 4617 and HDDVD, BD and ISO files for both?

Its worked for me when i've tried it. ISO playback on the 4617 build shouldn't be a problem as long as you are using the latest version of virtual clone drive to mount the images.

OK, I'll have to look at what gets 'fixed' by upgrading from 4407-4617, maybe not enough to warrant the change anyway.
Also wasn't there a 4617a as well...
I am so hesitant to change from the current version (4407) as it seems to be working better then ever before! ;)
When you say rollback, are you using 'system restore' in Vista or XP, tyring to determine the 'safest' way to try newer versions while being able to return cleanly to the working image.
Thanks

4617a doesn't like HD DVD and is for retail only anyway so I don't use it. To rollback I just uninstall the build I don't want and reinstall the build I want. You could always backup your harddrive before trying out a new build that way if it doesn't work and you can't fix it by uninstalling and reinstalling then you can just restore your drive from the backup.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it

Good advice, I'll stay put for now, 'working' is always better then 'fixing'!
I'm still happy with my P4 Media box ATi 2600 AGP and PDVD 4407. I quit updating along time ago once I got everything working the way I wanted it, of course with the latest anydvd helps for later titles. I actually ran into a problem disc that wouldn't play in my A3 it just won't load. My BD 5000 dual player has no problem with loading but runs into a stutter issue at a certain scene repeatable everytime pausing fix's. Playing it through my AMD rig with an early build of PDVD that still plays through the HDD has no issues playing this disc or the ripped file.
The Media box looks and plays it the best ATi has a solid picture zero banding and just makes EVR that much better when using MPC-HC. But PDVD 4407 is no slouch either it is probably my favorite build due to the PQ in Vista and performance/audio. My only gripe is no HDD playback and your forced to iso's, like I said before I'm lazy and just like things simple but when there is a challenge it always gets me off my a$$.:)
Using clone and making the .iso for the French version of Pans is the only solution for this defective disc to be salvageable. I also want to mention when trying to just rip the disc it errors out, but making an .iso is no problem. There is also no copy protection on this version and being the only THX HD DVD ever, it sounds great on my VSX-03. Anyway Amazon.fr is replacing my Coffret copy and letting me keep this one due to high exchange rates, it isn't worth sending it back.:D
originalsnuffy 03-30-09, 09:38 AM So I have not used this program in a while....been using Arcsoft.
However, recently I dusted it off when Arcsoft was haing a "hissy fit". It was not using the ATI accelerators or some such.
Anyway....PowerDVD seems to want to update to version 9 (I am at an old version...7.3? One that still natively played files from the hard drive. A retail version).
I had a really hard time getting the software to work properly. Does it have some kind of self destruct built in? Should I remove it and reinstall it? I need version 7x since I still have HD DVD media that I want to play.
Thanks.

I still use 7.3 build 3319 and haven't had that problem--doesn't work with absolutely everything but still meets most of my needs.

I figured this out as well. Don't know why I didn't see it last week when looking at the files.
Unfortunately 5006 isn't useful to me without HD-DVD and I couldn't find any way to enable it in 5006.

There has to be a way, if there was a way to hack hd dvd into 8, it has to be easier to add it back to thr 5006 build. I will give it a try. My plan of attack is to compare 4617 to 5006 in detail to see what the differences are to see if its possible to add the hd dvd parts of 4617 to 5006.
deandob 03-31-09, 05:50 AM Its stupid that they removed HD DVD out of the v7 patches - I'd say a fair number of v7 users are still on v7 because of HD DVD. Also, what exactly does this latest patch do, improve reliability, improve audio/visual quality? Removing HD DVD is a backward step so can hardly be called an upgrade.....

This is NOT a regular LG OEM release, it is intended only for the version of powerdvd 7.3 that came with the GGW-H20N drives. From cyberlinks page:
Upgrade for LG-ODD JB3 PowerDVD 7.3: This upgrade is for LG-ODD customers who purchased the ODD Model: JB3. This downloadable update activates the CPRM feature.
# Updates: Activate the CPRM feature in PowerDVD 7.3.
# Installation Requirements: This update is for SR: HDS080303-04 users only.
The installation requirement can be bypassed by altering the installer to allow you to use this build without having the HDS080303-04 build installed. I am guessing it came with just blu-ray playback enabled so this patch would not add functionality that wasn't there in the first place. If cyberlink were to release this or a future build for all HD DVD enabled LG drives without HD DVD functionality then you would have cause to protest. Whether they will or not remains to be seen.
I personally don't really need HD DVD playback, I got my GGC-H20L long after the format war was over and anything I want to watch or purchase is or will be available on blu-ray.

One (potential) word of warning. My 7.3 OEM version offered me this update today too but it seems to have broken keyboard shortcuts. Some discs I tried still worked (Casino Royale) but none of the Warner titles I have would respond to the keyboard anymore (Batman Begins, The Matrix).
It took a great deal of faffing and trickery to get it back to the previous version *and* not have it wanting to update (if I said no it refused to play the disc). Not quite sure what I did in the end, but it's working for now...
Irish_Comer 03-31-09, 12:51 PM I updated to the latest patch for PowerDVD 7.3 and did a full re-install of windows etc. When I mounted my image of The Matrix HD-DVD the Dolby Digital track was showing at 320kbps when I select "Show Information" in PowerDVD. Now I'm fairly sure it used to say 640kbps on my old install. Can anyone confirm what the bit rate should be?
Thanks

Do you know what version (OEM) you are (were) at? ie. the actual build level?
Also can you proved the name of the update, ie. PDVD7.3_DVD070813-09_HD_2ch.exe
I know this may seem like a lot but without real information about builds and file names the warning is of not much use...

Interesting, I tried, Chronicles of Riddick, Transformers, FF Tokyo Drift and all of the Dolby Digital tracks show as 256Kbps.... I am at OEM build 4407.

Non 'a' would indicate OEM then, I was briefly at that version but had playback problems with ISO files so I went with OEM 4407 when I rebuilt my Vista system.
So far I don't seem to be getting the 'offer' to upgrade, which may be a good thing because everything is working at this version for me, but...
I am interested in the post you just made about 640Kbps on the Matrix HDDVD, do you have any of the titles I just listed to check with 4617?

ISOs work ok for me with 4617 using the latest (possibly beta) Virtual Clone Drive.
I don't have any of those titles, sorry. I should add that The Matrix disc I have is the UK one.
doehead 03-31-09, 02:49 PM I see 640Kbps on 7.3.4617
Oops, scratch all that...just noticed you talked about the HD DVD. I only have the Blu-ray version. Sorry.
Not quite sure what I did in the end, but it's working for now...I'm pretty sure the keyboard problem would be fixed by putting:
UI_EnableBDJKeyboard "0"
in:
HKCU/Software/Cyberlink/PowerDVD
(if there is not an enable BDJ keybaord option hidden somewhere in the options as thereis in PDVD9 and, I hear, the latest patch for PDVD8).
This registry patch was discovered some time ago for PDVD8.
I cannot say for sure, but its likely that the forced update that PDVD was trying to do was simply a key update so it can play the latest discs, not a patch update. It only takes a second or two, should be safe, and is probably advisable if you play "real" discs, but it is only needed if you do not use AnyDVD.
Can you provide a link to download this update?

thanks, I may have to revisit the upgrade to 4617, I have it here somewhere.
I am going to have to check out some of the BD titles I have that contain DD soundtracks and see what the bitrate is. Although I am not completely surprised that there are different encoding rates for different movies and media types.
All I want to know if the different versions of PDVD make a difference in what we see (hear) as to the bit rates, it shouldn't because this is encoded into each disc and the software should react accordingly.

Is that the retail or oem and could you post the link to the other one? Thanks. I try to collect all the Powerdvd 7 patches, every once in a while something interesting comes up like 4617 retail patch that converts oem to quasi retail and the 5006 patch thats a complete installer. I disable my internet when I run powerdvd (bd-live sucks) so I never see these updates. As soon as I get them i'll tear them apart to see what i can find.
Edit: I think 7, 8 and 9 share some code because I was looking at the 9 trial the other day and the CLVSD.AX filter in 9 is the same one as in the 5006 build of 7...same version number 8.4.205. There are probably more shared filters and dlls but that was the first one I noticed (its also included in the K-lite codec pack 4.75)
Laserfan 03-31-09, 08:00 PM Am I the only one who starts twitching uncontrollably when reading any PDVD thread, including this one? Omigod, how ON EARTH do you suppose Cyberlink keeps track of all the versions (7, 8, 9) and all the variations (retail box, retail dl, trial, OEM this, OEM that ad nauseum).
Some enterprising soul (I nominate JustABDFan) ought to make a run at a chart that shows the different versions, with their updates, and what is fixed/broken for each. I imagine they have a "big board" at Cyberlink tech support that TRIES to show everything, but of course they'd never share... :p
P.S. How about an HTML chart, so one might even link directly to the patch download. I know, too much to ask of anyone (except Cyberlink, and they ain't tellin')! ;)
I'm pretty sure the link 5105 link he posted is for retail.
I installed it and it still doesn't work with Planet Earth HD-DVD. I just uninstalled and went back to 3730a, the last version to support all of my HD-DVDs.
For Blu-ray and DVD, I use something else with more recent updates.

I have no idea how to Cyberlink attempts to keep track, and I mean attempt since they often break more than they fix and post broken patches that have to be pulled reworked and reposted (seems to happen with 8 more than 7) but theres no way I could do justice to a chart showing all the patches. I don't even have all the patches, I joined this party a bit late, right before 4407 was released. Also I don't have a retail serial or installer to really experiment with retail versions unless they install over oem versions. I have two 8 ultra trial versions, 1730 and 1830 but I can't install recent patches on trials. So basically I am not able to create such a chart though I would like to.
I am NOT going to use a key-gen serial or installer I didn't download directly from cyberlink either even if it was just for research.
JustABDFan 04-01-09, 04:54 AM If you want to install the very latest version of PowerDVD you can use the following web site link:
http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/patch/enu/result.jsp?SR=DVD080818-02&ProductNo=DVD00021
Change the DVD080818-02 to the version you are actually running (find this by clicking on "About" and it should show up at the top of the form).
Note that whenever PowerDVD detects it cannot play a movie due to a missing Bluray or HD-DVD capability, it is this web site that you are directed to in order to get the very latest version.
I found this post from back in late november, it still works. I changed the SR= and ProductNo= to the numbers from the ureg.ini in the installers and got the latest links, one which was already posted. I checked with 4617 retail and oem numbers and got these links. I don't have 4617a to check the build number and product number.
i can confirm :

originalsnuffy 04-01-09, 10:08 AM Jruser;
I have a ton of Cyberlink updates sitting in my file folder. You seem to have a pretty good handle on this company.
Which was the last version to read folders from the hard drive without resorting to file mounting utilities? And how can identify versions from the file names on the hard drive without installing them?
I think I need to remove the product and reinstall. Having some audio issues right now (course this might be an artifact of home made remuxes).

7.3.3319a, but it won't play a lot of the newer discs...

Yep, this has worked great.
To confirm, I'd updated from 4617 to 5105 and lost the ability to control PDVD from the keyboard (or remote). Adding this key - it wasn't there, even after the upgrade - has restored keyboard control.
Thanks.

Can OEM 5105 play HDDVD and BD from both ISO and optical disc?
doehead 04-01-09, 01:39 PM Can OEM 5105 play HDDVD and BD from both ISO and optical disc?
It's working fine with BD ISOs. I don't have any HD DVDs to test, I'm afraid.
The HD DVD options are still listed in the configuration dialog if that helps.
doehead 04-01-09, 01:46 PM As an aside to discussing the latest patch, does the resume feature work properly for anyone (with BDs)?
In the previous version, it worked for *some* titles, but not many.
Casino Royale was one of them it did work with. Now, in 5105, it doesn't appear to resume...always starting with the Sony Pictures intro, then the Blu-ray trailer, then the main menu. Then, weirdly, if you select start movie, it will resume from where it last was, after playing the copyright notices that normally play first.
I've tried with and without AnyDVD HD, and with and without BD-Live enabled in that. I have no idea if that's meant to affect it though.
Has it ever worked properly in any version? Thank god all my normal TV/DVD viewing happens in another program :-)

Thanks, If I get brave or daring then I might try 5105, but for now 4407 works for everything I have tried, it's hard to mess with success.
As for resume at 4407, I'll cautiously say that it works with what I have tried, as you say definitely with Casino Royale...
Cheers

Thank god all my normal TV/DVD viewing happens in another program :-)I'd always thought it worked for "basic" blu-ray and not for Java-based titles (as really PDVD is then only a wrapper/enabler for a different Java "player" on the disc). But that does not explain why Casino Royale worked and now does not.
Wow, the movie industry have really managed to turn Blu-ray into a total dog's breakfast.

Do you have the 3730a retail patch? It used to be found at http://download.cyberlink.com/ftpdload/patch/powerdvd/PDVDUltra_3730a_Patch_DVD080102-02.exe but the link no longer works. This is supposed to be complete installer also according to this post on the slysoft forums http://forum.slysoft.com/showpost.php?p=97490&postcount=18
I've looked for it all over the net and haven't found it. I'm trying to track down as many patches as I can and that one in particular sounds interesting to take apart. If it is that would be 3 patches that install powerdvd completely.
Blacklac 04-01-09, 04:37 PM I seem to have ran into a problem with audio. I updated my PDVD7.3 to the latest (4617 to 4617a?) and I noticed my Universal HD DVD's let the menu on the screen during the whole movie. More like the menu background, none of the options were there. (I read on Cyberlink forums 4617a removed HD DVD. Well they played, but I get this menu image in the middle of the picture. I never tried any different studio's before changing drivers back to the old ones) So I decided to revert back to older drivers I had installed on my PC already. Well, now I only get 2-channel from SPDIF/Optical connection. I've looked through all the settings and I don't even see anywhere to enable SPDIF output in PDVD. Seems it was there before... Just says headphone, 2, 4, 6, 8 speakers.
I use an LG drive. I bought PowerDVD off Cyberlinks website, so even the old driver should have surround sound over Optical, correct? I'm confused as to why it's broken.
When I get home, I'm going to reinstall my soundcards drivers and see.
What is the lastest driver to update, that HD DVD's work properly? And where to download? I only see 4617a on there site.

I would say that you are the victim of too many changes to the same software installation. Back up all of your data to another drive including any installation software or updates to applications as well.
Unless you really need the current installation I would either de-install PowerDVD altogether and reinstall it from scratch or rebuild the entire system and make sure all of the windows updates and sound/video drivers are at the latest level then in your case instal PDVD 4617 (no 'a')...
Irish_Comer 04-02-09, 06:19 AM Can OEM 5105 play HDDVD and BD from both ISO and optical disc?
I have upgraded to 5105 and it will not play iso HD-DVDs from the hard disk. Disk mode flashes on the screen, then File Mode, and it says there is no disk in Drive I. I used Ghost to roll back to just the OS and reinstalled everything again, but when I tried to play anything (even old Blu-rays such as Black Hawk Down) PowerDVD insists that I get the latest patch. When I upgrade to that, Blu-Ray iso play fine but not Hd DVD iso.
I'm a little worried about the integrity of my hard disk, so I'm going to try a new install on a different hd later.
doehead 04-02-09, 06:42 AM I've also just noticed that 5105 (retail, updated from OEM), is still offering an update for download (it doesn't prompt about it though).
However, when you attempt to do so, it just offers a download that seems to be the same file as before:
CyberLink.5105_TaRe42_DVD090217-02.exe
Maybe it's because I'm running OEM->Retail, I'm not sure. It shows up as OEM/Retail in the About box, with 8/6 on the audio capability/decoding.
Radiophile 04-02-09, 08:00 AM I just got the Slumdog Millionaire BD. It loads for a few seconds, then PDVD says I must upgrade to be able to play this disc. I'm running build 4617a, retail. Has anyone played this disc successfully? With what build? Maybe I need to try 5105.

Slumdog Millionaire is a Fox title with a new variation of BD+, if it doesn't play on 4617, then you'll need 5105. This happened in December also when Fox used a then-new BD+ so they wouldn't play on 4407 but did play on 4617. This is going to keep happening every few months or so. Its cat and mouse between Fox and Slysoft.
Edit: I'll bet Marley & Me doesn't work either.

Thanks for passing this information along, my fingers remain crossed that OEM Build 4407 continues to work for me, I have an equal number of HDDVD and BD titles so continued compatibilty is a prerequisite.
I wonder about build 4407 and the BD key updates for newer titles, I don't have Slumdog Millionaire or Marley & Me, how do I know if a disc has this new BD+ setup?
All Fox titles you say?
Is this the end of ISO playback?

No thanks! I'll just try 5105. :D
JACZML120 04-02-09, 03:25 PM I'm pretty sure the link 5105 link he posted is for retail.
I installed it and it still doesn't work with Planet Earth HD-DVD. I just uninstalled and went back to 3730a, the last version to support all of my HD-DVDs.
For Blu-ray and DVD, I use something else with more recent updates.
is 3730a the best version for HD-DVD Support? After this weeks fisaco I think I'm going to go to a two PDVD installation solution. 7 for HD DVD and and Updated 9 for Blu-ray. Latest PDVD Update to make Marley and Me work broke HD DVD Playback for me. Audio sync issues and green screens flashing. Weird stuff...

I had a the same thing with Marley and Me. Downloading the patch allowed the movie to play, but then I had HD DVD issues. Audio sync issue on Stardust and green flashing screen on Sleepy Hollow and How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
kramer007 04-02-09, 06:35 PM I am running PDVD 7.3 Ultra 4617 and updating to 5105 just completely screws up my system. I can launch PDVD but as soon as I try to play anything it crashes. Also I don't see anything in the 'Audio' tab in the configuration window. I can only see 2 empty dropdowns. I am on Vista 64.
Irish_Comer 04-03-09, 07:32 PM I carried out a full install of Windows XP and tried an older version of PowerDVD with a mounted iso of The Matrix HD-DVD. It showed 5.1 640kbps. When I upgraded to 4617 it showed 320kbps. It's really difficult to know just what the hell Cyberlink are at? At least it's not insisting that I update to the latest patch anymore.

I would not worry too much about it.
The bug only appears with Dolby Digital Plus soundtracks.
This codec cannot be dowsampled, and it does not contains a "core" part.
Therefore it can only be completely decoded.
That leads me to believe it is just a display glitch.

And my ears agree with me! ;)

If that doesn't work, maybe it's finally time to buy a standalone player. Or maybe I'll try TMT -- I wonder if it's been updated to play this latest "upgraded" type of BDJ disks.
(Thanks for all this, Sony and Hollywood. My contempt for you is exceeded only, apparently, by your contempt for me as your customer. I will never forget this.)

Pretty much not a single glitch in the months since I switched. It worked so good, I actually BOUGHT it and don't regret it...I'm trying to follow my plan of uninstalling PDVD and going directly to build 5105, but Cyberlink is fighting me every step of the way. The 5105 file is just an upgrade and it wouldn't install without PDVD already on my PC. So I installed the original version I got when I bought PDVD Retail (build 3319f). That installed OK, and the first time I started it, it said I needed an upgrade, so I followed that path, and it took me to a Cyberlink page with build 4617. I downloaded and installed that. The first time I started it, it again said I needed an upgrade, so I followed the link at it took me to -- get this -- an http404 not found page on the Cyberlink site! So then, not to be stopped, I put the unplayable Slumdog Millionaire BD in my drive and started PDVD again. This time it took me to the build 5105 download, and I'm right now downloading it from the slow Cyberlink source. I'll give it one more try.
If it doesn't work, I'll follow your lead, none74. (Still wondering if TMT can play the latest disks like Slumdog Millionaire or Marley and Me, though.)
JACZML120 04-04-09, 06:14 PM I want to freeze my 7.3 Ultra for HD DVD playback only. Which is the best release to leave it at? 3730a is the version I am leaning towards.

They sent me links to download 3730a full installation, but are then recommending I upgrade to 4617a and then to 5105 again. I will go through the motions and do some tests along the way but I suspect I won't end up with a properly working version of 7.3 Ultra and I will end up back with the playback issues.
Thx

I will go through the motions and do some tests along the way but I suspect I won't end up with a properly working version of 7.3 Ultra and I will end up back with the playback issues.
Thx
JAC
Hey JAC, I am not sure about file based playback but for ISO and disc playback 4407 is my friend! :D
I read a few posts back that 4617a didn't like HDDVD...
Here is my post on the best version of PDVD I have found so far:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=16069700#post16069700
Has anyone been able to play Slumdog, with AnyDVD if needed, without upgrading from 4617? I really do not want to upgrade, ever. I am not clear if this disc (and future Fox titles) really require a new version o fthe player, even after AnyDVD's magic?
doehead 04-05-09, 02:39 PM Another downside to 5105 seems to be that it no longer offers up the Cyberlink AVC video decoder (cl264dec.ax) filter to other Windows programs for use. It's now a much smaller file and manually attempting to register it fails.
How do I get the 5105 update???? When I go to the link it tells me to when trying to play Slumdog Millionaire it tells me my powerDVD is up to date. I only have build 4617...
EDIT: Apparently, I just needed to reboot after installing that Active X control into IE. Found the update now.
sleater 04-06-09, 01:00 AM Ok I would like to be able to play newer Fox titles yet I do not wish to mess up HD DVD. How would you have 2 installs (i.e. 5107 & 4407) on the same machine? Is this even remotely possible?
I would even be ok with shelling out for the newest version 9 if I could maintain a good HD DVD working version 7 on the same computer. Is anyone successfully accomplishing this?
Irish_Comer 04-06-09, 06:29 AM I've done alot of work with two operating system installs (XP and Vista) and the three versions of PowerDVD. On my system my findings are as follows:
1. PowerDVD 7.3 4617 on XP plays HD-DVD from iso and Blu-rays, but not the latest Fox releases (I haven't tried any of these) Playback is perfectly smooth with reclock set to auto for Blu-ray and original speed for HD-DVDs.
2. PowerDVD 7.3 5105 on XP plays Blu-rays from iso but not HD-DVD. It did play HD-DVD from disk. No other issues.
3. PowerDVD 7.3 5105 on Vista gives the occasional dropped frame on Vista for Blu-ray. Does not play HD-DVD from iso.
4. PowereDVD 8 always did and still does give me the odd dropped frame every 30 seconds or so even with reclock on both XP and Vista. Does not support HD-DVD without a "fix."
5. PowerDVD 9 (disaster) on Vista does not support HD-DVD. Does not work with reclock so it stutters constantly. Will not play alot of my Blu-ray movies from iso (Slysoft are aparantly looking into this.)
So I've now settled for a dual boot XP system. One with 7.3 4617 and the other with 7.3 5105. How long that will last without issues, I just don't know.

All the patches after 4617 lock out the HD codecs from use by other directshow players. For Powerdvd 8 I think its all patches after 2217 but i'm not sure. As far as I can tell only the SD codecs like clvsd.ax and claud.ax are unlocked (probably so you could watch dvds in WMP if you wanted too).
All the software blu-ray players are getting locked down more and more, it wouldn't surprise me if eventually the software would need to go online to get playback permission from the studios after the player scanned your harddrive for any software the studios deem inappropriate.
I've come to the conclusion that PC playback isn't worth the hassle anymore, I'm going to get a standalone player. bye bye powerdvd, you won't be missed.

I have a feeling that you are right, the days of PC playback are numbered, each time I read about the problems with all of this I am amazed how far it has gotten. I still like the HTPC senario when it works but I can see with the newer BD titles this is becoming a pain, it is great for the ability to playback missed TV shows too! ;)
I still pick up HDDVD's in the 'bargain' bins so between my Toshiba standalone player and the HTPC I can still watch these, for $3-$7 it is hard to loose.
I have been watching the BD standalone player prices continue to drop and now that I have seen BD players with 7.1 analog decoding for between $300-$350 I have already decided that I will not invest any more money in the a HTPC solution to play movies, I will keep what I have working but other then time I won't invest money.
Hey, I still have my LaserDisc player, but somethings must eventually come to pass, probably time to clear off the shelf and replace it with a BD player.

I just got 9, running it on Vista with the latest update and it does not have any issues with playback that I have been able to see so far. (Other than the omission of HD DVD playback ;)
Will update my 7.3 to the 4617 and freeze it there for Optimal HD DVD playback as others have recommended and will continue to update 9 from here on in.
Once a decent SA gets below $200.00 CDN (see'em around a bit lately but still not common place) I will pick one up, but I can't see myself abandoning HTPC plus its not like your SA will never need to be updated.
Blu-ray is such a pain wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for Fox and their love for BD+.

Check the slysoft forums Slumdog, and Marley and Me are not able to be played with AnyDVD HD yet so the only way would be to update PDVD to latest release and disable AnyDVD.
FujiToast 04-08-09, 03:23 PM Ok This is probably off the topic from what you guys were just talking about but I'm looking for some help with PowerDVD.
I just got PowerDVD 9 installed and updated it and JUST like 8 & 7 the playback is constantly stuttering while I try to play Blu-rays. I'm talking like 1 frame every 2-3 seconds.
I'm running Vista 32-bit on a 2.33 GHz Core2Duo (E6550) with 6GB of RAM, with a PNY 9600 GT 512MB Video Card, and the LG GGC-H20L Blu-Ray/HDDVD combo player. Does anybody have any ideas?
The video plays just fine through Arcsoft TMT but TMT for some reason won't activate the subwoofer channel.
Please Help. Thanks so much!

The fact that you get very short jumps so regularly, and regardless of which version of PowerDVD, suggests to me that it is the refresh rate of your screen. Most Blu-Rays run at 24 frames per second, to get a picture with no jumps like you mention your screen needs to run at a multiple of that rate, ie 48Hz or 72Hz.
For my Nvidia 9600GT I needed to set up a "custom resolution" in the Nvidia Control Panel to get 48Hz and tick the box marked "allow modes not exposed by the display". You will need to fiddle with the "Advanced" part of the custom resolutions page and make sure that the "Actual refresh rate" changes to 48(ish) and doesn't just stay at 60(ish) even when you enter 48 in the "GDI refresh rate" box - change the Timing standard to "CVT reduced blank".
atari1980 04-08-09, 07:18 PM I had to update powerdvd 7.3 (ultra, that came with my dvd player) to version 5105 to watch slumdog milionnaire on blu-ray, then, for some reasons, i can't play any of my HD DVD or Blu-Ray in my collection now. Only slumdog works, all the others: WALL-E, Planet Earth (HD DVD), Step Brothers gives me a 'DVD Error - internal error - error code: 80040154'...
If i reinstall powerdvd 7.3, and re-apply good old 4617a update, all is well again, but i can't play newer titles.
I have Vista 64 and i can't find anything related to that, Cyberlink won't give me support because i have the OEM version.
Anyone had this problem yet??
I'm having the same issue - updated in order to play The Day The Earth Stood Still. I can still play my other BD but none of my HD DVDs work now.
UPDATE:
Looks like mounting a HD DVD iso with Virtual Clone Drive 5.4.2.8 solves this problem.
Unfortunately I don't think my MediaPortal can use VCD, only Daemon Tools.

Not that exact, but many posts above are also reporting various issues with 5105. Looks like an update to stay away from.
Hi there.. to All Senior Members & Experienced Users of PowerDVD
Evidently the support provided here is far more superior to that available at cyberlink's own support forums!
With much expectations I'm here to seek the solution for my long-cursed issue, so lets begin with the specs:
Sound Card: Sigma Tel HD Audio (Notebook)/ Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS (PC)
Misc codec: AC3Filter & SRS Audio Sandbox/ Creative Junkwares :D
Speakers: Mercury HT5800 (yep, BOSE copy, indeed, not in performance)
So guys My issue has verified in both scenarios; the laptop with 5.1 built-in card and desktop with 7.1 PCI card.
Uptill, powerDVD 5 everything was smooth. Then I made upgrade to version 6 Deluxe. Primary issue was this:
When selected 6 speaker mode (5.1) and played a live DVD there were no options for Dolby Pro logic / DTS. Only Cyberlink's TruTheater Surround (Multi-channel Environment Impression Mode). I used to fix this by choosing 8 speaker mode and all the missing tabs would then appear in their proper place and dolby/DTS decoding performed well.
Then I purchased Core2Duo notebook, since the desktop was 1.0 GHz Celeron. And eventually I got my hands dirty with powerDVD 8 Ultra. Everything was cool but the same above issue existed (plz note this time its a different soundcard - my notebook). and problems got worst as the above workaround wasn't valid anymore plus the sub-woofer stopped giving any sounds out only when playing back DD 5.1 content whether from DVD or Hard drive. I did try a lot of apparently insane settings just to get sound out of the bass unit but no matter what i did It never produced anything. Then Just a couple of days back I got a copy of latest powerDVD Ultra 9 and again not even a single bit changed. All Pro logic IIx & DTS NEO decoding was 100% through satellite channels but the BASS was no where to be found.
plz note while playing contents other than 5.1 Dolby Digital, the sub-woofer would work perfect. (I've noticed something while troubleshooting by muting all channels except sub-woofer that when speaker mode is changed it does give a deep LFE for a 1-2 seconds and then go dead.)
I do apologize if i've raised this issue in wrong section, if so plz correct me along with your expert guidance & solution to my above issue. :o
Lots of thanks, in advance.
yea... think its better to start over with a new thread for this topic... c ya all there! :)
hgeblome 04-10-09, 09:53 PM Ok, I've read a large part of this thread now, but still can't decide if the LG GGC-H20L is capable of playing Bluray discs with 5.1 sound (not necessarily HD sound) without purchasing additional software. It sounds like version 4617 gives you 6 channel sound but breaks HDCP compliance (?) and can't play newer discs. Here's what I'm trying to do:
I'm building a Vista HTPC with a ASUS P5n7-vm (nvidia 9300) motherboard. I would like to install this drive and output 5.1 sound and video via HDMI to my Panasonic plasma and then output sound from the plasma to my receiver (Onkyo sr504 -no HDMI) via optical cable. I don't think I need HD audio and I can live without HD-DVD playback. I don't want to purchase anymore software.
Will this work? Is anyone successfully doing this?
What version of PowerDVD is currently shipping with the LG GGC-H20L?

The GGC-H20L is just a drive, the audio and video capabilities depend on the player. The version of Powerdvd that comes with the drive (I believe its still 7) can be updated to the latest build. Both 5105 patches can be installed over the version that comes on the CD. The oem will give you 2 channel, the retail 6 channel. HDCP tends to get broken or fixed for different people with different builds but to play the most recent blu-rays without running Anydvd HD in the background you'll need 5105.
Al Sherwood 04-11-09, 11:37 AM Last night I tried to play Evan Almighty (HDDVD) on the HTPC, although the menu's came up most of the video was replaced with 'green screen'.
The reason I say most, the FBI warning screen was visible just before the opening credits started then it was back to green screen, at least I have been warned!
After what Irish_Comer posted about 5105, this may be the only way to continue with the HTPC, but at the expense of ISO's?
My trusty Toshiba standalone came to the rescue so the kids were happy...
Sheesh, this is a 2007 movie that won't play, I wonder if it has anything to do with the web enabled features? There was a note inside the case about possibly requiring the latest firmware updates for the player.
Al - I had issues with HD DVD iso as well after upgrading to 5105. Solved it by uninstalling Daemon Tools and spdt driver and installing the latest Virtual Clone Drive beta. The beta has DT emulation so I just pointed my MediaPortal to the daemon.exe in VCD and everything is fine again.
Not sure if that'll fix your problem.

Thanks for the clarification. So can I just download the RETAIL version of 5105 from Cyberlink and install it over the OEM version of Powerdvd7? In other words, I don't have to pay for anything else, right?
Edit: Nevermind. I see you answered this exact question in another thread. Thank you very much for your help!

Interesting, I may try 5105 then because I just picked up 16 more recent HDDVD titles and although I can play them on the standalone player it would have been nice to use the HTPC (reason, I was going to put the standalone player in the living room for that TV).
I am currently using VCD (not sure which version) so that may be OK, but you mention spdt driver (?), what is that?
I wonder if 5105 will cure the 'green screen'?
Daemon Tools typically installs the sptd driver for scsi support. Not sure if you have to uninstall it but here's a faq about how to do that - http://www.duplexsecure.com/faq/
Since you're already running VCD, perhaps you don't have the sptd driver anyway.
I did the same thing you did - been picking up cheap HD DVDs on eBay.
Al Sherwood 04-11-09, 02:54 PM Thanks for the explanation about the spdt driver.
On this newest OS install (Vista 32), I never installed Daemon Tools and decided to try VCD instead, possibly a good choice considering build 5105
A local supermarket chain has big bins of regular DVD's, mixed in were numerous HDDVD's for between $4-$7, all combo versions at that.
TadMarshall 04-12-09, 08:35 PM I made the poor choice to buy into the PowerDVD 7 Ultra cesspool after buying an HP Pavillion HTPC that came bundled with an OEM version of PowerDVD which HP calls "DVDPlay". The HP Pavillion Slimline s3330f has an HDDVD/Blu-ray/DVD drive and DVDPlay plays HDDVDs and Blu-ray discs and was mostly OK ... it just seemed kind of clunky. I bought the then-current version of PowerDVD 7 Ultra, which was 7.3.3730 via download for $96.94. Since then I've "upgraded" PowerDVD 7 many times with Cyberlink's free patches, but I've resisted all attempts to sell me a "downgrade" to version 8 or 9 which won't play HDDVDs.
I'll skip most of the details, but some Blu-ray discs that wouldn't play on either PowerDVD or DVDPlay prompted me to buy WinDVD 9, which frankly is even worse than PowerDVD. Mostly, PowerDVD worked. I used WinDVD to play discs that wouldn't play in PowerDVD or DVDPlay.
Then a few months ago PowerDVD started crashing on launch. It wouldn't always crash, maybe half the time, and if I kept on restarting it eventually it would run. I installed Visual Studio 2005 to try to find out why it was crashing, but Visual Studio couldn't attach to the crashed process. I tried attaching to an uncrashed instance of PowerDVD and that didn't work either. I wondered if there was some rootkit-like masking going on and finally got a rootkit detector to run on Vista (I used GMER). Guess what ... PowerDVD's "000.fcl" device driver hooks five SSDT (System Service Descriptor Table) functions: ZwDebugActiveProcess, ZwDebugContinue, ZwReadVirtualMemory, ZwSuspendProcess and ZwWriteVirtualMemory. I assume that this is an attempt to prevent people from stealing this crappy code, but imagine what your machine would look like if every commercial software program decided that it was OK to hook system services. It is also hard to imagine that a hacker sophisticated enough to reverse engineer copy protection would be stopped by this (GMER can restore the patched addresses for example) so I doubt if this rootkit dabbling really accomplishes anything. Well, it did stop me from figuring out why PowerDVD was crashing.
Then I got Slumdog Millionaire (BD) in the mail from Blockbuster and tried to play it. It wouldn't play in PowerDVD 4617a and PowerDVD led me to download and install CyberLink.5105_TaRe42_DVD090217-02.exe. Trouble is, the new version still wouldn't play Slumdog Millionaire, it still wanted to download the same patch, and now PowerDVD wouldn't play any of my four store-bought Blu-ray discs either. All four (Enchanted, Fifth Element, Clockwork Orange and Run, Lola, Run) start to play (silently) and then freeze a few seconds into the studio splash screen.
And the other joke is that DVDPlay still works fine and played Slumdog Millionaire with no problems. (I didn't try WinDVD). So, the bundled player I started with works while the buggy expensive program I downloaded and patched multiple times and watched crash but couldn't debug does not work.
So far today, I've uninstalled PowerDVD and will try to reinstall it to some point where it plays my Blu-ray discs ... perhaps build 4407, I'll see what happens and what I feel like trying. But I'm pretty disgusted and wanted to pass on my rootkit and 5105 issues in case this information helps anyone. The bad version identifies itself as 5105 in the About box, but the file version of PowerDVD.exe is 5113 ... go figure.
Tad

Of the discs you mention, I have Fifth Element on BD, I'll confirm but I do beleive it works on build 4407
...Trouble is, the new version still wouldn't play Slumdog Millionaire, it still wanted to download the same patch, and now PowerDVD wouldn't play any of my four store-bought Blu-ray discs either...
Are you sure it wasn't just trying to install the updated keys to play the movie? When it says "This disk requires an update..." (or something to that effect), it is not the same as the version patches.

Al Sherwood 04-14-09, 02:43 PM Ahhhh, that helps, I am generally in a hurry when this message has come up and I would have declined the update thinking it would chnage the build level of PowerDVD.
I wonder if this is why the last HDDVD title I tried only showed a green screen when I tried to play it (Evan Almighty)?

sinofsins 04-14-09, 09:13 PM Does anyone know why my PowerDVD only displays File Mode when I tried loading Death Proof HD DVD iso?
I have AnyDVD running in the background and using PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra with patch updates. Bluray discs and Death Proof HD DVD disc plays normally but is this version of PowerDVD incapable of playing HD DVD iso?
Edited:
Did some reading around in the other threads and managed to solve this problem that has been bugging me for days. Solution was to stick to my PowerDVD oem disc that came with the LG drive and applied 2 patch updates. Thanks to Mr JustaBDfan. Now I can finally load HD DVD iso. So much for using the Ultra version.

you forgot an important part:
"Click Yes on the error message dialog to connect to the CyberLink Web site and download the updated version of PowerDVD for AACS keys renewal. If you wish to download the patch afterward, please go to the following URL to retrieve it."
It would appear that key updates are tied to patches and not independent, based on the information given on that site.
TadMarshall 04-14-09, 10:45 PM After uninstalling 5105, I reinstalled 3730 and tried Enchanted. I got the AACS (BD+?) dialog ("A critical component of the player requires periodic updates. ..."). I clicked Yes and got the same web page offering me the 5105 update. I downloaded it and compared with what I had downloaded before, and the files are identical. I installed the 4407 update over my 3730 installation and tried Enchanted again. Same thing ... "A critical component blah blah" and clicking Yes takes me to the 5105 download page. I installed 5105 over my 4407 and it is broken in exactly the same way as before. The Disney Blu-ray commercial starts to play with no sound, then the screen freezes as Peter Pan is leaping out of the window, and PowerDVD won't respond to mouse clicks or remote control button presses. Hitting Ctrl+Esc to bring up the Vista Start Menu, I right click on PowerDVD on the task bar and click Close and Windows confirms the obvious ... "Cyberlink PowerDVD is not responding." Clicking End Now closes PowerDVD.
So, the dialog suggests a simple AACS (or BD+) update, but what happens instead is that I'm offered a non-working update to 5105.
I've watched Enchanted at least three times before on PowerDVD, probably on several versions so it's not the movie that's bad here. I'm on analog 5.0 sound (no subwoofer at the moment) through the onboard RealTek chips (no SPDIF or HDMI audio) and sound works in all channels in WinDVD and DVDPlay, but I get no audio from PowerDVD 7.3.5105.0 on Blu-ray. I don't have any HD-DVDs to test right now, but I moved one to the top of my Blockbuster queue so I should have one in a few days. PowerDVD 5105 seems to have no problems playing standard DVDs, sound works and it doesn't freeze.
I'll raise the issue with Cyberlink tech support, but my last interaction with them was unimpressive. (I said that unchecking the Hardware Acceleration checkbox wasn't working, and the response was to uncheck the Hardware Acceleration checkbox. It turns out that you can't uncheck this box for Blu-ray or HD-DVD discs, but the response was kind of surreal.)
Am I correct in understanding that other people running version 7.3.5105 can play Blu-ray discs with no problems? I think that someone mentioned no audio.

It would appear that key updates are tied to patches and not independent, based on the information given on that site.Sometimes there is just a key update (which happens transparently after clicking "yes"), sometimes a full patch is required e.g when BD+ is changed. I have seen the former, but never the latter. I guess it depends on how often you update and whether you use AnyDVD.

As jong1 said, it's not always a software patch. I've had to click "yes" several times and the movie starts playing almost immediately (due to the transparent key update). I've had to do it when there was no newer version of PDVD so I'm sure it was just a key update.
TadMarshall 04-17-09, 08:04 AM I got "Slither" on HD-DVD from Blockbuster and tried playing it on PowerDVD with the 5105 patch. It doesn't hang like it does on Blu-ray, but it plays with no audio like it does on Blu-ray. "Slither" played fine, with audio, on DVDPlay, HP's bundled Cyberlink player. Is anyone reading this using (or trying to use) PowerDVD 7.3.5105 so we could compare experiences? PowerDVD continues to work as a regular DVD player, no new issues and no crashes so far. Thanks!
I've been ripping my BD discs to .ts files with tsmuxer. I've been doing this primarily to use with the wdtv playback device but occaisionally I like to watch on my laptop so I got PowerDVD 9 to playback the video files. When I rip the files I have tsmuxer downconvert the dolby true hd streams to AC3 and DTS-MA streams to DTS (because of the limitations of the wdtv device). Powerdvd9 plays back the files with AC3 audio via the laptop speakers but DTS audio will not play. I get only video no sound. It's not a hardware issue. I can get XBMC media player to play the dts audio fine if I set it to analog out. Is there some similar adjustment in powerdvd that I am missing? I have it set to 2 speaker environment.
Thanks,
Brian
dale7344 04-26-09, 05:45 AM Am I correct in understanding that other people running version 7.3.5105 can play Blu-ray discs with no problems? I think that someone mentioned no audio.
Well. I got my PDVD 7.3 with my LG bluray drive. It updated when I first put in my Wall-E bluray. I now have 7.3.5105.
I have played Wall-E, Pride & Predjudice Special Ed.(2009), and Madagascar 2 (2009) with no issues and full 5.1 sound. Wall-E pdvd info shows DTS HD Master audio while playing... Madagascar shows Dolby TrueHD.
Did someone say that the OEM version is supposed to be limited to 2 channel sound? This is not the case, at least for direct 6 channel output to z-5500 speakers. Possibly things are different for digital (HDMI, SPDIF) output.
This is on Vista-32 SP1.
Blacklac 04-26-09, 11:44 AM So far today, I've uninstalled PowerDVD and will try to reinstall it to some point where it plays my Blu-ray discs ... perhaps build 4407, I'll see what happens and what I feel like trying.
Where can I download 4407? Mine got all screwed up after I downloaded 4617a.

The one updates the version came with GGW-H20L and GGC-H20L drive is still 4407.
Admins... what happened to page 267 of this thread? I was following some interesting discussion and posted a question myself yesterday, but several of the most recent posts have disappeared!
So... does anyone know why this thread died?
rdunnill 05-03-09, 07:11 PM I am using the latest retail version of PDVD 7 and HD-DVD playback sound becomes progressively out of synch with the video.
Is this inherent with PDVD 7.X? If so, does TMT 3 Platinum solve this problem?
Hardware is Intel G31 with e5400 CPU and 4gb RAM, Realtek onboard SPDIF, and Sapphire 4550 low-profile video. Operating system is Vista Ultimate x64.

I don't know about others but I have not experienced a problem with the sound on PDVD 7.3 (not sure which version you are at) build 4407.

No worries, just read the description and choose the update for the retail software.
It would appear that build 4617a from the update dated 2008-12-11 is the only retail update they are making available...
IIRC there was a 4407 for retail but it may have been replaced by 4617a.
Strayshot 05-04-09, 04:16 PM The newest patch is 5105.
Al Sherwood 05-04-09, 04:40 PM The newest patch is 5105.
Yes I know but it is not available from the download page that I provided the link to, only 4617a is there.
As you mention, a later version is available (build 5105) as prompted while running PDVD.
If you don't want to wait for the prompt, just go there: ;)

I had the newest version and uninstalled it in favor of one from last fall. HD-DVD works again.
The version downloaded via the prompt is the buggy one.

Exactly, I ran into similar problems when I upgraded too far, all of a sudden the HDDVD wasn't workng, ISO's quit, etc, etc.
That is why I reverted to the OEM version 4407 (I started with OEM software that came with my LG drive).
Robert Clark 05-05-09, 06:29 PM This solution works but then you're left without the ability to play new titles like Day the Earth Stood Still.
Cyberlink needs to fix this.

A big reason why Slysoft AnyDVD-HD is a must-have for the HTPC. I have no interest in stealing HD content, just playing back that which I've bought or rented, yet I have to use this product to do so.
Cyberlink needs to fix this.Yes, they do. But will they?
Sorry if you have already read this on the Slysoft forum, but can anyone tell me how you stop PDVD7 insisting on this 5105 update that seems to be broken? I am on 4617 and, now it has prompted for the update, PDVD7 will not even play old Blu-ray titles that worked previously until this update is applied.
Elderan 05-07-09, 11:29 AM So general question about Power DVD 9. I wanted to know if anyone has seen this. I am running Windows 7 and when I play a Blu Ray through Media Center using Power DVDs built in player (the one built into media center) everything works fine. However sometimes when I try and change the volume with the mouse, or click on anything really it tends to lockup those menus. The movie will keep playing but the play bar in the bottom right stays up and wont go away and you cant click anything at that point. The only way to fix it at this point is to go to kill media center.
I wasnt sure if it was a windows 7 thing or not but it did it on the Beta release (7000) and the RC release (7100).
If I play straight from Power DVD everything is fine though.

I had numerous problems with 5105. So I reinstalled 4407, and disable internet access when ever I play a Blu-ray title. Seems to work on newer titles also. Should be the the same for 4617. When I disable internet access, I do not get the update prompt.

I ran into this same problem and I downgraded to the previous release, rebooted and everything is fine now.

And the version (build #) you went back to was...? OEM or Retail...?

Yes, they do. But will they?
This is the response I got from Cyberlink. I haven't tried their suggestions yet as downgrading worked for HD-DVD...
Since I use Vista virtual memory already seems higher than their suggested level.

Someone else care to try?

For your reference, and every one else's, I was pointed at this by someone over at Slysoft Forums: http://club.cdfreaks.com/1476097-post7.html
I re-installed 4617, renamed this dll and just for good measure blocked PDVD7 from internet access in my firewall. We will see if the prompt ever comes back. All is working again now, we will see if the prompt ever returns. I am worried there may be a timeclock trigger as well as the check of the web site, but we will see.
Surprisingly renaming the dll seems to work fine. It does not even seem to affect HD-DVD playback, which is odd given its name!
Guys,guys,stay frosty.
5105 works just fine ! :)
All you need to do if you want hd-dvd iso support is to update VCD (5.4.2.8 beta is the latest) and you are good.I haven't tried to hook up the 360 player though...

Those instructions sound like a bunch of rubbish. I too am plagued by the audio sync issue in the latest version of PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra (build 5105). BluRay works perfectly but HD DVDs are unbearable after about five minutes. It seems that 5105 was released somewhat recently (given the number of recent threads - late April/early May 2009 - that exist about this audio problem with playing HD DVDs). I'm new to this area so I'm not sure about cyberlink's reputation but some other threads mention TMT. I'm tempted to look into that but hate to spend $100 to fix something that should be working in the first place with PowerDVD.
