My car does not have a cassette player as I am sure many new cars don't. Do you need a cassette player to use the Inno in the car? It looks as though it uses a cassette insert and the modulates on an FM station. Is this correct?

I assume it is like most FM modulators and you tune your vehicle radio to one of the preset FM stations on the XM receiver (You also have to set your XM radio to the same station and choose one with no interference from local stations).

In my experience, the fidelity of a cassette interface is much better than the FM modulator. When I recently had to purchase a new radio for my old vehicle, it did not have a cassette player but did have an audio in jack on the front. I use this for my XM input and it works great.

No you don't need a cassette player. The unit will transmit the FM signal back through the XM antenna to your cars antenna. Also, the newer kits may have a different mechanisim to transmit the FM signal. I got my wife a Roady 2 for Christmas and it had their new antenna system. The FM re-broadcaster has a couple of options. You can affix an antenna to the inside of a window, or you can drop a round device over your antenna. These devices connect to the XM satellite antenna up near where the satellite antenna plugs into the base.

You won't see the option for the FM frequency select on the Inno unless it is in a car cradle (or maybe connected to a car antenna, not sure which provokes the unit to allow FM broadcast.) My wife said she did not see the option for the FM frequency select on her Roady 2, but she did not have the FM antenna plugged in so I am assuming it is disabled until you plug the secondary antenna in (she is using the cassette player.)

The fM modulator (built-it) works only when the unit is in the car cradle on the newer units. It has to do with FCC regulations so XM was more or less forced to kill the fm modulator funcionality with a firmware update. If you need the fm modulator to work outside of the cradle make sure that the firmware virsion your inno has is 1.05. Anything after that disables the fm modulator unless the unit is in the cradle. There are plenty of new unopened units with the older firmware on ebay but be ready to spend a few extra $$. I use my Inno in many different cars, so I opted to pay a bit more for the functionality. Just make sure you dont update the firmware :)

BTW In my everyday car, I have the car kit installed with the fm modulator wired to the back of the radio; works great.
